Throughout the Epiphany term, The Igloo has continued to be a central hub for all kinds of social activities, bringing people together and helping to provide fun opportunities.

This term saw the return of more live music, proving to be a huge hit! 2023 kicked off with the Refreshers weekend, which saw The Igloo host the Big Night In, featuring an evening of live music for students from all years to enjoy. The Igloo welcomed John Snow's own 'The Blacklist' who rocked the roof down with an incredible set. The John Snow music society also hosted an open mic evening, encouraging musical talents of all levels and varieties to get involved in raising funds for the Turkey Syria Earthquake Fund.

The success of the weekly pub quizzes carried over greatly into this term, with many teams returning week after week to compete for the bar tab. The pub quiz also showed to be a brilliant outreach opportunity, with our LGBT+ pub quiz raising £57.50 for Brianna Ghey's Memorial Fund.

Many sports and societies, both in John Snow and across the University, turned to The Igloo to host their events, such as the JS Languages Soc, JS Swift Soc and DU Esports and Gaming, along with weekly poker nights and board game sessions from JS Poker Soc and JS Board Games Soc respectively.

The Igloo saw the return of many fan-favourite events over the last few months, from karaoke, bingo, board games and more, as well as some new events such as our Mario Kart tournament, speed dating evening and St Patrick's Day party, featuring the live showing of the men's and women's Floodlit Cup finals to wrap up the term.

The Easter term hopes to continue this year's success with more live music, more pub quizzes and more new events to help people through the stress of the exam period!

JCR Formals

Janet Dixon- Dawson (Vice- Principal)

Epiphany Term saw us hold two outstanding Formals. The first was held on Thursday 26th January where we took the opportunity to mark “Burns Night”. A Highland Piper in full regalia ceremoniously piped in the Haggis deftly carried around the Hall by Max.

The Piper then superbly recited the “Address to the Haggis” which was followed by “The Immortal Memory” after which we dined on “haggis, neeps and tatties”. Thanks to our Formal Committee our tables looked splendid in tartan accessories with Scottish themed floral posies. The floral arrangements were donated to St Cuthberts Hospice the next day.

On Thursday 16th February we held our inaugural Charities, Outreach and Societies Formal. Kiko Keighery played the Steinway as guests entered the Hall where the table were beautifully decorated to a spring theme – the spring flower posies were donated to St Cuthberts Hospice the next day.

Our guest speaker was Megan Rimmer who is the Volunteering Co-ordinator (Colleges) from the Student Enrichment Directorate, who spoke to our guests about the benefits of volunteering in the local community and the various opportunities which exist. The main message to the 220 students present was “Get involved”. Following the Meal, excellent entertainment was provided by DU a cappella singing group Foot Notes. The evening continued with live music in the Igloo.

Both Formals were attended by students from across all years bringing together our College community.
