Culture: Students celebrated Lunar New Year at John Snow International agent Bella Zhang co-ordinated a variety of activities for John Snow students to engage in, to celebrate Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia, including China, Vietnam, Korea and Laos. During the two-week festival, people travel to see their family and friends, give gifts, and eat a new year meal.
2020 - Year of the rat The Chinese zodiac has 12 animals: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig
Activities Calligraphy Using black ink and fine-tipped paint brushes, students tested their Chinese writing skills using the traditional art of Calligraphy. Origami Attendees tried their hand at Origami the ancient art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. Some interesting models were created!
Hatfield Formal Global Durham After a pre-dinner speech from Matariki Network Manager, Lucy Turzynski celebrations continued at the 2nd/3rd year formal, in Hatfield College. Table decorations reflected Lunar New Year including oriental lanterns and fortune cookies.
Chinese Lanterns Participants all left the festivities with bright red traditional Chinese lanterns, a staple of any Chinese Lunar celebration, to adorn their student accommodation.
