PRINCIPALNATHANSEMPALA NTEGE

Nathan Sempala-Ntege joined Durham University after a 27-year career in the British Army As an officer in the Royal Artillery he served in on training exercises and military operations in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Far East and Africa and in a variety of planning and policy posts His last military roles, in the rank of Brigadier, were Deputy Commanding General of the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the Army’s Head of People Strategy.

I’m delighted to be writing to you as the new principal of John Snow College It is such a privilege to lead the college into the next chapter of its story together with our new Vice Principal, Dr Ruth Wilson, and the rest of the College team.

This has been a fantastic, hectic first year. The undoubted highlight has been getting to know so many of our brilliant students. I am in awe of the energy and imagination so many put into college and university sports, societies, the performing arts and events; this newsletter can only give an impression of the breadth of activity that goes on Above all, I love the atmosphere of fun, kindness and inclusion that characterises the college community.

This year, and building on my predecessor, Professor Carolyn Summerbell’s, good work, we have focused on two things First, putting John Snow College firmly on the Durham University map through showcasing our students and their achievements across the wider university community. Second has been to launch a series of improvements to the college: making our buildings and space work better for our students, refurbishing the college bar, The Igloo, and creating more usable outside space

So what’s next? I have three priorities for next year First, to develop and pilot our new student enrichment offer, the John Snow Futures Programme. Second, to launch the Senior Common Room (SCR) This is the traditional Durham structure of a SCR reimagined for the 21st Century – a dynamic, nationwide and global network of John Snow College alumni and friends who are willing to contribute to enhancing opportunity for our current students and each other And third, from the beginning of next year, we will be welcoming all students on the Durham University online MBA as members of our College

Our college and our students are brimming with potential and my ambition for the college is huge I’m therefore extremely grateful to the chair and members of our new College Advisory Board, all accomplished senior leaders in their fields, for the advice, insight and challenge they will bring to the development of our College over the coming years.

LET'SBEGINHERE.

If you are a student, I hope this newsletter provides the opportunity to look back fondly on this year at John Snow If you are one of our alumni, you are part of our past, but, much more importantly, you are part of our future and we are really excited to reconnect with you.

Prior to her role at the college, she was Director of Student Support at Leeds Trinity University for 3 years, where she headed up a support service of 58 staff, overseeing student support, mental health and wellbeing, disability, money advice, student communications and engagement and learning support.

For the preceding 13 years, she worked in various roles for the University of Sunderland, most notably as the senior manager responsible for the set-up of its London campus in 2012 in Canary Wharf which continues to go from strength to strength to this day, and then as chief strategic advisor to the Vice Chancellor from 2018. She has a passion for student experience having taught in sixth forms and further education colleges prior to her move into HE and has spent time overseas working for Save the Children She has a research background in international student experience completing her doctorateintheuseofoverseasrecruitmentagentsin2021

JCRRETROSPECTIVE

s the academic year draws to a close, it is only right to reflect and celebrate what has been an incredible year for John Snow JCR! Despite feeling like a lifetime ago, Induction Week has certainly been a highlight of this year. The 2023/24 REP team were a fantastic bunch to work with, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the 2023 cohort of students felt welcomed into the College community. The team helped to run nine consecutive nights of events, making sure that there was always a friendly face around for our new students!

The excitement of Michaelmas Term didn’t stop after Freshers’ Week In October, we went on a trip to Beamish Museum, which was a really fun day out! In November, after weeks of planning, we took just under 200 students to the Edinburgh Christmas Markets, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended. After such a successful first year, I hope that this trip will continue! Some other highlights of Michaelmas included our first ever Diwali formal, some brilliant (but very cold) floodlit sport fixtures and the return of College Family Buffets! We rounded Michaelmas off in style with our spectacular ‘Nordic Nights’ Winter Ball at Beamish Hall, organised by Rhys, the JCR Ball Chair and his dedicated committee! The event was enjoyed by all those that attended and went well into the early hours of the next morning! We kicked Epiphany Term off with Refreshers’ weekend, which included the classic (but very cold) big night out in Newcastle! In March, the Hub Hall was transformed and beautifully decorated for the return of Spring Soirée organised by Jasmine, the JCR Entertainments Officerand a dedicated team of volunteers

Another Epiphany Term highlight was the John Snow Dance Society Charity Showcase, which thanks to match funding from the Big Give Campaign, raised a whopping £1,170 for TIN Arts

And now, we have reached the hectic month of June! The calendar is looking full to the brim with a variety of amazing events, and with final exams out of the way, students are certainly looking forward to letting off some steam!

We kick June off with John Snow Boat Club’s annual ball on the Prince Bishop River Cruiser, enjoyed by 140 guests Next, we will have Sports and Societies Dinner led by the JCR Sports and Societies Officers, Faith and Caitlin Full and half colours awards will be presented to students who deserve recognition for all their ongoing hard work and dedication to JCR clubs, and you can find the list of recipients in this newsletter

STUDENT WELFARE

Wow what a year!

This year’s student support has had lots of changes that we hope have been for the best A new location on the ground floor near the pigeon holes has meant that we get to see so many more of you on a daily basis some of you even come in to sit on the beanbag and have a chat

We have had so many Welfare events including College Dining, Lunar New Year, Diwali and lots more we have noticed the trend that occasions involving food have been the most attended events and we have taken that on board for next year ! Mindfulness has been at the forefront of the welfare campaigns with lots of opportunities to try something artistic and enjoyable while taking advantage of a cup of coffee and chat with the team Making Christmas wreaths and Halloween decorations was great fun although we were picking up pumpkin seeds for weeks !

Dom and I have been working together this year focusing on what you, the students, want. We have offered in person meetings, drop-ins, Teams and off site appointments to try to meet the needs of the students we care so much about in John Snow College. We are excited to have a new member of the Team start in August. Rachel will join us working part time Monday to Wednesday and will make a great contribution to us working hard to support all of our Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, so please make sure you say hello when you return to see us in College

This has been an amazing time for us all on the College Team and it has been a privilege to work with such an exceptional and hardworking JCR exec. For those of you due to graduate well done you did it !!!!! but remember to keep in touch ! For those who are with us for the next couple of years we are here for you so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you ever need some support or just a sit on a beanbag !

I am excited for the new academic year and wish you a happy and peaceful Summer.

JOPPORTUNITIESANDFUTURESFUND outreach

Moint-College Project: As part of the joint 20th-year celebration events George Stephenson and John Snow started a new community project together with Sherburn House Charity Sherburn House was established in 1181 by the Bishop of Durham Hugh Pudsey (Hugh le Puiset) It is located in a secluded valley which has been designated as a conservation area. They have a care home and private residential accommodation for older people, set in some stunning grounds.

Over the last year, we have had monthly social events during term time which enable students and residents there to chat with one another and to strike up new friendships, which can grow over time. Our friends at Sherburn House are very hospitable and bake cakes and put on a wonderful range of refreshments Our students marvel at the scenery and the company! We hope to build on this project in the next academic year

y trip to the beautiful city of Prague with the Durham foundation year, was an unforgettable experience. I was able to explore the city and see beautiful landmarks such as the Astronomical clock and the National Museum, even getting to visit the impressive Palacky University in Olomouc. The fund meant that I had sufficient money to cover all of my travel costs and truly enjoy all that Prague had to offer! I could only take part in this opportunity due to the Opportunity and Futures fund from John Snow College which I am so thankful for; just one more reason it’s the best college at Durham.

S p o r t s

John Snow Sports have thrived this year! With the introduction of 2 new sports (Table Tennis and Mixed Netball) and many of our teams making it to floodlit semi-finals and finals, I have never been happier to be involved in such a sporty college I appreciate all the members of the execs for making John Snow sport a welcoming and supportive environment I have loved being Sports Officer this year and I cannot wait to celebrate the end of the season with all our lovely teams at the Sports and Society formal

At John Snow Boat Club, the 2023/24 year has been very busy The start of the year saw a huge intake of new rowers who have been coached by a former Olympic rower both on the ergs and the river We have competed at many races both in Durham and in cities across the Northeast in eights, fours and singles with our crews beating numerous other colleges and clubs A big part of rowing at John Snow is the community within the boat club and over the past year, we have held many socials including our big Christmas dinner

Cheer CheerJSRFC JSRFC

Building on last year’s success, Phoenix Cheer have continued to perform at several events throughout the year including varsities, floodlits, college days and charity fashion shows Intercollegiate Cheer Competition 2024 was a great success With Phoenix placing extremely well:

- 1stin All-Girl Main Routine (3rdConsecutive Win)

- 1stin Poms (Highest Scoring Routine of the Day)

- 1stin All Girl Group Stunt (3rdConsecutive Win)

- 4thin Co-ed Group Stunt (Most competitive category of the day)

These brilliant results show the hard work and dedication of all our cheerleaders and we hope to see similar success next year!

JSRFC has once again cemented its status as the premier club in the college, securing a strong second place finish in the league with a standout victory over St Mary's in the Floodlit Cup to avenging a loss from two years ago in the final The club also raised an astounding £2269 for Movember, with the Budgy Smuggler 10km run being an unforgettable event We eagerly anticipate our upcoming summer tour to Bratislava and look forward to another fantastic year for JSRFC!

John Snow Hockey Club’s performance this year was marked by unwavering enthusiasm, dedication and teamwork even in the face of a few losses this season Every game showcased both the men's and women’s team's hard work and relentless team spirit The players demonstrated remarkable resilience even after a few key players were struck down by Collingwood’s body tackles and Grey’s high balls Despite a few unfavourable outcomes, the team’s passion hockey and playing together shone through making for a brilliant and enjoyable season from everyone JSHC spirit remains unbroken, and we’re excited to continue bleeding blue next season and showing everyone what make JSHC so special

JSWRFC have had an amazing season, reaching the Floodlit Final after winning the quarter finals 61-0, and the semis 59-0, and have collectively scored more tries than any other college team Our team has kept growing, and for the first time JSWRFC are going on tour to Prague! Several of our players have moved up to play for Durham and make up a huge portion of the Hill vs Bailey charity match With most players never having played rugby before, we’ve had a fantastic year of wins, lots of tries, and invaluable friendships!!

nnetball etball

John Snow Netball has a great year with a huge increase in participation and the creation of a D team and two mixed netball teams! Firstly, the A team this year did incredibly well finishing 5th in the premiership division

The B team had a great year finishing 2nd in their Division to be promoted next year into Division 1! The C team reached the final of the Plate tournament coming 2nd which was a wonderful achievement They also finished a fantastic third in the league with just missing promotion by points difference. And the D team finished 5th overall which is great for their first year as a team

After promotion last year into the top division, John Snow Frisbee has enjoyed a great season. Qualifying into the knockouts from the group stage was no easy feat, after which we put up a good fight against a strong Mary's A team to lose out in the quarter-finals. Overall, we have had a great year with lots of laughs and fun Looking forward to more success in the Festival of Sport and Varsity this term :)

As for the mixed teams John Snow A team won their league coming first and beating Collingwood! And the B team finished 7th in their league

The highlights of the year are definitely the C team reaching the Plate Final, the B team being promoted, and the Mixed A team winning their league! We can’t wait for more match play and tournaments coming up this term

This year has been a great year for JSVC. Once again, we were able to enter 2 strong teams into the league finishing 6th and 7th in their leagues. Admittedly these results were not as high as previous years however this is due to our outstanding record number of members earning their place in DUVC this year (which in turn restricted their involvement in the leagues) All members have worked so hard this year and should be so proud of themselves and their development , you will not find another president in snow who is prouder of their members than I am.

Having only been created last year we were extremely excited at the start of this year to see where the darts team would end up. Luckily for us we had an excellent crop of freshers as well as some experience from last year that ultimately led us to the league title. Highlights include a 7-1 thrashing of our local rivals It's been an incredible year and we can't wait to go again in the top division next year. Forza la JSDS

The John Snow Table Tennis Club has had a remarkable inaugural year, achieving several significant milestones It attracted a diverse group of students and built strong connections with other sports at John Snow College The club participated in the intercollegiate table tennis trophy competition and hosted weekly practice sessions Additionally, it successfully grew its Instagram following to 90, enhancing its visibility and engagement within the college community

Baking Soc has been buzzing with new sign-ups from all years. Alongside bake sales for Welfare’s Stress Less Week, the Big Valentine’s Collab and biscuit decorating, our standout event must be the College Family Halloween Bake Off!

Congratulations to our culinary champions, Marshall 37 and Broadwick 2, who wowed our new Principal, Nathan, stepping into Paul Hollywood’s prestigious role. We have also raised nearly £200 for great charities through bake sales, with special thanks to Ruth, our vice principal, for backing MIND, and to the MNDA in honour of our president, Kieran’s, grandad Our Instagram has also showcased mouth-watering creations from exec and members alike. Thank you to everyone for making our society thrive!

What a year it’s been for Swift Soc! We've had the best time bringing all things Taylor to life through so many fun and exciting events From crafting friendship bracelets for Taylor’s upcoming UK leg of her tour to album-listening parties, testing our knowledge at fun trivia nights, and, of course, belting out our favourite Taylor anthems at karaoke nights, we’ve done it all. We’ve danced, we’ve sung, we’ve screamed, we’ve shared our favourite memories all year round It’s been a long time coming, but with our founding members graduating, it’s hard not to find it all a little bittersweet and leave the society behind for the next chapter We’ve had the time of our lives celebrating all things Taylor with you, and we can’t wait to see where the society goes next year!

After refounding John Snow Poker Club at the start of Epiphany term we have been running weekly poker games on Monday nights in the Igloo These have grown in popularity ever since and we now have a large community of players who take part in our friendly games Throughout the year, we have had the opportunity to take part in many college events such as Spring Soiree, and the Annual College Dinner, where we won the “Society of the Year” award We would like to thank the college, and JCR, for all of their support over the past year

Snow’s Crochet Society had us hooked all year! Our first year among Snow’s societies, we welcomed beginners with Starter Kits, teaching basic stitches and watching skills blossom as members and exec alike showcased their craft through our ‘Monthly Makes’ scheme. Highlights include themed events for Valentine’s, Remembrance, and Global Week, all met with great success, providing a creative outlet for College and ensuring Snow remains vibrant! We proudly ended the year with our president winning Society Leader of the Year, and as we reflect back, we stand proud of the yarn-enthused community we’ve built, eagerly anticipating the future of Crochet Soc!

Amidst the whirlwind of student life, Snow Societies have been a beacon of activity! From our 'Big Soc's Collabs' to weekly classes, karaoke, quizzes, buffets, bar crawls, arts and crafts, there’s been something for everyone. We've also welcomed new societies like Chocolate, Crochet, and Poker, to name a few! Every society, exec and members, has demonstrated unwavering dedication, selflessly volunteering their time It's been a joy to celebrate and express my gratitude for their efforts at our Sports and Societies Dinner. From being a quiet first-year to founding and presiding over my own society (I had to mention Swift Soc!), it's been a privilege to be Snow's 2023/2024 Societies Officer Whilst I wish I could continue my role, I’m sure Michael will show great leadership and that societies will flourish!

This year, Book Club has shared reviews, raised money for charity and opened John Snow’s first shared book shelf. We have consistently created and sent out our newsletter each month, giving book recommendations and film reviews Each month we choose a ‘Book of the Month’, for society members to read along with, detailed in the newsletter We organised a charity book stall sellling second hand books, and a successful book swap amongst our members. From this, we opened up the book shelf – our own mini library in the Igloo, which college students have been adding to and taking from since its establishment

Bean society has had an exciting year for bean lovers from around the college The year kicked off with a beansoc karaoke that will go down in history as being one of the events hosted in the igloo that week We have been able to religiously provide a daily “beanle” word for over 2 and a half years (play for yourself at jsbeansoc co uk/beanle), providing a great way of developing a rich bean related vocabulary The beansoc billy b tracker app has been updated and has gained popularity this year amongst keen students completing their summy t’s

GLOBALWEEK

As part of Durham University’s Annual Global Week, we celebrated and recognised the contribution of our international community to the culture and life at College BakingSoc sold global bakes, raising £60 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Book Club gave popular translated second- hand books a new home through their book sale and the newly introduced Igloo bookswap library CrochetSoc hosted a flag-making session, creating a garland displayed to all. InternationalSoc held a tasting session MusicSoc, in collaboration with InternationalSoc, held a karaoke night which featured international songs, from K-Pop to Bollywood hits. Outside the Hub, traditional games of Chinese foot shuttlecock and hopscotch were played In the Igloo, Board Game and Chess Society ran international board game sessions, while Tea with the Vice Principal included offerings of global teas, coffees and snacks

STUDENTINTERNS

Here at John Snow College, we are proud of our Durham heritage and traditions but feel that we are still relative newcomers amongst the more established colleges We’re also named after a Game of Thrones character, a Channel 4 newsreader, an England cricketer or a Victorian physician, depending on your cultural frame of reference The Dr John Snow Anniversary lecture this year aimed to address this last point – and was also part of our work to put John Snow College firmly on the Durham map We were very fortunate to secure Dr Stephanie Snow as our guest speaker for the evening. Stephanie is a Professor of Health, History and Policy and Academic Lead for Community Engagement and Involvement at the University of Manchester. Her work has focused on the life and work of Dr John Snow including his role in the introduction of anaesthesia to medicine and more recently, on contemporary health And by a stroke of serendipity, Stephanie is also related to him! Her lecture brought to life Dr John Snow’s approach to medicine and the qualities that make him so worthy of recognition in having a Durham College named after him. He cared for marginalised groups when many others did not, including women in labour and the urban poor He rigorously followed evidence and, most importantly, he acted to improve – and save – lives

DRJOHNSNOW ANNIVERSARYLECTURE

Being the first John Snow Student Communications Interns was a daunting experience, but a challenge we met head-on From helping to pick the individual music pieces for ACD, to generating a backstory for a teddy bear, no two days on the job were ever the same The most challenging task was writing and directing the college advert This project demanded a deep understanding of our college's values and culture, and the ability to translate that into a captivating visual story. Once again a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to take part in the advert, as well as to Nicholas our cameraman, and to everyone else who has helped us during this internship Overall, we have loved working for John Snow College and have been so thankful for all of the opportunities and friendships it has brought us #BleedBlue

Since February, we have been Student Enrichment Interns for College From redesigning the Igloo, to picking photos in the Hub, we’ve done it all (we even booked Dale!) We’ve gained some specific skills like understanding how commercial product sourcing works, conveying our ideas clearly, working collaboratively, and improving our tech skills and effective decision-making It has been interesting to learn about what goes on behind the scenes and witness all the work that goes into enriching college life. The welcome we received into our role not only as students, but staff, has made us feel comfortable and part of the team

The showcase raised £585 which was doubled by the BigGive campaign, allowing us to donate £1,170 to our chosen charity, TIN Arts TIN Arts is a charity that aims to break down barriers and improve access to the arts, especially dance, and is local to Durham, so we were very pleased to be able to donate this much to them.
