In the 2025–2026 academic year, John Snow College proudly marks its 25th anniversary a milestone that celebrates not just the passage of time, but the enduring spirit of community, excellence, and forward thinking that has defined the college since its founding in 2001. From its roots in Stockton to its modern, new home in Durham, John Snow College has always been an active, inclusive, and supportive community Now, as we celebrate a quarter-century of achievements, the College is launching a series of initiatives and events that aim not only to commemorate the past, but to shape the future
The 25th anniversary is an opportunity to engage every part of the John Snow community students, alumni, staff, supporters, and friends in a year-long celebration. The anniversary programme spans three key areas: the launch of the John Snow Futures Programme, expanded alumni and Senior Common Room engagement, and a vibrant series of celebration events Each of these efforts is united by a single purpose: to celebrate the College’s legacy while laying the foundations for its next 25 years.
Giving our students the competitive edge for the future
The 25th anniversary campaign will also include a major communications drive to engage alumni and students across multiple channels From the launch of a dedicated webpage to the sharing of monthly college updates and alumni memories, the College hopes to create a vibrant, interactive celebration. A hashtag campaign will encourage alumni to share photos, stories, and videos reflecting on their time at John Snow, with the theme: “Where are you (s)now?”
Influential alumni, including former JCR leaders and society heads, will play a key role in generating momentum and encouraging participation A special edition of the College’s “SnowDown” publication is also planned for July 2026, showcasing highlights from the year and supporting the push for donations to the internship fund
At the heart of the anniversary is the launch of the John Snow Futures Programme (JSFP) in October 2025 a forward-looking initiative designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the world in 2030 and beyond The JSFP will include a diverse range of speaker events, hybrid and podcast-style discussions, LinkedIn masterclasses, and a newly opened “Futures Resource Centre” This is not a traditional College library, rather it will feature a modern collection to promote personal growth and help our students to understand the 4th (and 5th) Industrial Revolutions which will shape the world into which they will graduate With themes such as “The World of 2030”, “Human Attributes”, “Networking and Opportunity”, and “Opportunity North East”, the programme aligns closely with Durham University’s Graduate Attributes framework, ensuring students gain practical skills and insights that will empower them in their careers and communities and enable them to tell the story of their academic and extra-curricular development to future employers
The anniversary also marks a significant push to reconnect with the College’s global alumni network and grow the SCR through the launch of the Founder Member Scheme SCR members are invited to contribute to the College’s development by donating £10 per month, the first 100 to do so earning recognition with their name on an honours board in College and a commemorative badge This donation will fund a series of alumni engagement intern to build and strengthen our network, whilst providing valuable work experience for them. The College will also creating new opportunities for alumni to engage through online networking events, thoughtleadership talks, and a targeted philanthropy campaign to support the newly proposed Internship Support Fund This initiative reflects John Snow’s commitment to ensuring all students can access meaningful work experience regardless of social background
As John Snow College reflects on 25 years of transformation, growth, and community, it also sets its sights firmly on the future. With the launch of the Futures Programme, the expansion of alumni and SCR networks, and the introduction of the Internship Support Fund, this anniversary is not just a celebration — it’s a catalyst for the next chapter in the College’s story
For all who have been a part of John Snow College’s journey and for those who will shape its future this is a moment to remember, reconnect, and recommit to the values that have always defined it: innovation, community, and the belief that the future belongs to those who prepare for it.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary in style, John Snow Colle h planned a series of events across the academic year, creating m opportunities for alumni to reconnect with the College and each

This has been an incredible year for John Snow JCR to say the least! I’m grateful to the amazing people who are a part of John Snow JCR whether that be in exec position, society president, sport captain or someone who comes to our amazing JCR Events The JCR couldn’t run without the great student body that we have here and I hope you’ve all had an amazing year.
I want to thank our incredible Entertainments Officer, Ella Medley who meticulously planned and led Freshers’ Week and was always there for everyone.
Before the academic year started, I was keen to restart our alumni relations and as a result, we hosted our first alumni meet up in years at the John Snow Pub in Soho, London It was the bank holiday weekend in August, and the sun was shining for the occasion It was so great to see so many people turn up, from familiar faces to the Stockton era of John Snow Thank you to those who could make it, and this is only the beginning of our alumni events so I’m sure I’ll get to meet more of you in the future. I am hopeful that this will become an annual event in the John Snow calendar
We had a great Freshers’ Week with the new students getting a chance to get to know each other over some mocktail making with our Chair Steven, or via a very long conga line out the Igloo. A huge thank you goes to all of the REPs who volunteered for two weeks to ensure that our new Snow students were well informed and had a friendly face they could turn to They did everything, from ensuring everyone was safe by walking them back from town during those long club nights to leading the entire Igloo when doing the macarena I also want to mention how moved I was with all of their support for both me and South College during the difficult period when we learnt of the passing of South College JCR’s Vice-President, Leiha Tooke During this time, friendly rivalries were set aside, and we came together to support one another, showing the incredible community we have here at Mount Oswald
Once the chaos of Freshers’ Week was over, we were rushed into Michaelmas term where our incredible sports and societies re-started after recruiting their new members in our Freshers’ Fair Poker began Monday night sessions, Board Games on Saturdays with Music Soc helping to organise our popular live music nights on Tuesdays. The Igloo was as lively as ever
We had some brilliant formal dinners from the PG & Returners formal, Diwali formal and our ever-popular Christmas Formal I want to give a shout out to our rugby team who did an amazing job fundraising for Movember as well as everyone who took part. We also took over Edinburgh in our John Snow puffers when 200 of us went to visit the Edinburgh Christmas Markets It was so great to see such a good uptake for the trip!
Towards the end of the term, spirits were high as we all looked forward to our annual Winter Ball The masquerade theme in gorgeous Wynyard Hall was stunning, and the credit goes to Rhianna and her team for working so hard to ensure everyone had a fun night
As Epiphany term rolled around, we yet again had some lovely formals, one that stood out to me in particular was our Lunar New Year formal in which we collaborated with Ustinov It was so great to share a formal with them and hear from Ian Mak about the story behind the festivities We also had a lovely trip to York (despite the weather) as well as starting hustings and elections to decide who the incoming JCR would be. Congratulations to everyone who got their position, and thank you to everyone who applied and showed their love for everything John Snow!
Spring Soiree was definitely an Epiphany term highlight with the cocktail dress, great live bands and seeing the Hub transformed into a classy cabaret venue Ella did an amazing job putting together the event to make use of the great resources we have here at the top of the hill The incredible dance society held our annual Charity Showcase which was full of amazingly talented students performing to help raise money for Women’s Aid in Newcastle As Epiphany drew to a close, Snow Globe and Oswald Players performed their iconic collaborative production of ‘Snowmeo and Julinest’ which was fully enjoyed by those who watched
Easter term brought the Annual College Awards night which was an emotional one where we celebrated all of the great individuals who make John Snow so great. I had the honour to give some incredible people awards in recognition of their amazing work to help John Snow JCR I’m now writing this halfway through Easter term preparing for all of the exciting summer events in June The two weeks that encompass Boat club Ball, Sports and Societies, Summer Ball, JSCFS, and Snow Day will be busy but full of excitement and celebrations for everything Snow students have done The teams behind each event have worked incredibly hard to make them happen so I want to also say a huge thank you to them
Nick Evans – Incoming JCR President 2025/26
On a personal note, the year has gone by in a flash and who would have thought a little SU officer in her first year would still be here as JCR President four years later I am so thankful for the incredible people who have supported me during my time at Snow and I look forward to seeing all of the festivities to celebrate John Snow’s 25th Anniversary next year.
John Snow College JCR Committee 24/25
I am delighted to have been elected as the JCR President for the upcoming academic year (2025/26)! My time in college from quiz host to darts president has offered a vast array of experiences Do not worry, the quizzes will continue! As I look forward to next year, it is my hope that my hard work will ensure opportunities, like those I have had, are available to current and prospective students It is essential that every member of the common room is allowed to express themselves and excel both academically and, on the stage, or sports field. The hard work has already begun to ensure that this happens next year and we foster a strong community spirit and passion for the college amongst our members My team and I will always be open to ideas and thoughts as to how we can change for the better to enhance your experience! It is a key pledge of mine to remain open and transparent throughout the year, no matter the size of the issue. Working together with you, the students of John Snow College, we can make sure that next year truly is the best for everyone!
As the academic year draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on a vibrant and heartening year of student support, filled with memorable events, meaningful collaborations, and an ever-growing sense of community This year, our focus has been on enhancing student wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging for all From cultural celebrations to therapeutic companionship, we’ve aimed to create spaces where every student feels supported, seen, and celebrated
One of the year’s highlights was our series of cultural and seasonal events, including a magical Durham Castle tour, the festive joy of Christmas Tree decorating, and spirited celebrations for Lunar New Year, Global Week, and Mardi Gras These occasions offered students the chance to explore global traditions, connect with new peers, and take a well-earned break from their studies In the spring, our ever-popular Holi Throw brought a burst of colour and joy to campus, encouraging laughter, creativity, and community spirit Meanwhile, volunteering opportunities such as our partnership with Stray Aid provided students with the chance to give back, while making new connections and learning new skills
Charley the Therapy Dog was another cherished addition to the calendar, offering students a calming space to de-stress and enjoy the comfort only a friendly dog can provide Charley quickly became a beloved member of our support network
Throughout the year, we’ve proudly worked alongside a number of student societies to bring these events to life Special thanks to the Baking Society, Art Society, Environmental Society, Roast Dinner Society, Pizza Society, Outreach, and the International Association your creativity, enthusiasm, and collaboration have helped make this year truly special Our shared adventures extended beyond campus too, with trips to Durham Castle, the beach, and Beamish Museum, giving students a chance to discover the rich history and beauty of our region while building lasting friendships
As we look ahead to the next academic year, we’re excited to build on this strong foundation Thank you to all the students, societies, and staff who have contributed to making this a year to remember Your involvement continues to make our university a more inclusive, joyful, and supportive place for all Student Support Team
It’s been an amazing year for John Snow Outreach! Our main project in college, the Sherburn House Intergenerational Project, has gone from strength to strength this year. We’ve expanded our reach by also visiting the onsite Beddell House Care Home Students got to help run sessions for the residents, including some highly competitive bingo! The annual Christmas Carol Concert at Sherburn House was also brilliant this year due to our collaboration with John Snow Music Society. It’s not too late to visit our last visit to Sherburn House will be for an afternoon of summer games on the lawn in June!
A massive part of Outreach this year has been our new collaboration with Environment Society. I’ve worked with Alison all year on a variety of events, including our Neville’s Cross litter picks, and successfully applying for a £500 grant from Durham Council for a pollinator garden in college We’ve planted our wildflower seeds, and in a few weeks we will be building our bug hotel and hedgehog houses!
We also started up a wonderful project in Epiphany term with Durham Area Disability Leisure Group Students have been helping out with their Monday Evening sessions for children with disabilities and their parents We’ve also done a variety of fundraising initiatives this year. We started by selling cones of sweets at Snow Globe’s fantastic performances of Little Women, held a Mario Kart tournament at Christmas, did a bake sale with Taylor Swift Society, and took part in the inaugural Intercollegiate Fun Run! Thank you to everyone who has donated to a wide range of wonderful causes this year!
Finally, I’d love to say a big thank you to all our students who get involved in outreach and volunteering in college You’ve made our impact this year truly special
As the International Agent for John Snow College this year, my goal was to help build a stronger, more inclusive international community I aimed to strengthen the John Snow International Association (JSIA), establish a diverse executive team, and ensure that international students felt welcomed, celebrated, and supported throughout the academic year Building on the solid foundation laid by my predecessor, Andy Song, we began the year with International Week (PreFreshers’ Week) With support from our International Fresher Representatives (iFreps) and JCR President Jasmine Uppal, we focused on making the transition to Durham and the UK as smooth as possible for incoming international students Under the guidance of former College Coordinator Angela Lo and JCR Promotions and Communications Officer Eleanor Huyton, we created the International Freshers’ Handbook designed to provide useful guidance for new students throughout the year, especially during their first few weeks. Once term began, my focus turned to formally establishing JSIA as a college society and to form an executive committee that truly represented the diversity of the student body at John Snow. As a society, we organised numerous events, campaigns, and initiatives that brought international students together and celebrated cultural diversity Collaborating with the POC Association, Rachel Fenwick and the Welfare Wednesday team, we marked key cultural occasions such as Diwali, Loy Krathong, Lunar New Year, Holi, and Global Week
For Global Week, we partnered with several college societies to host daily events that not only celebrated international cultures but also encouraged intercultural exchange and learning As someone who has stayed in Durham during the university holidays, I was aware how isolating that experience could feel. To support those remaining during breaks, we worked together with College Coordinator Anna Casson to organise events for Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Ramadan, and Easter Monday, as well as day trips to Newcastle and South Shields I’m especially grateful to Principal Nathan and VicePrincipal Ruth, who joined us on Christmas morning and brought thoughtful gifts and treats that meant a lot to us When I first arrived at John Snow, I hoped for a space that recognised and celebrated international identity here at snow I sincerely hope that, through the efforts of our exec, the JCR, and college staff, we have created that space for our international students this year
Since February, we’ve worked as John Snow’s Engagement Interns, supporting alumni relations, contributing to the college website, and helping shape the weekly Sway newsletter A key part of our role has been strengthening how the college communicates, from designing clear, engaging content, to helping streamline messaging across platforms
Alongside this, we’ve contributed to longer-term alumni engagement projects, helping to reflect the evolving identity of John Snow while maintaining a strong sense of continuity and community
It’s been a rewarding insight into the work that goes into keeping a college connected and we’re proud to have played a part in it
The Snow-Globe has had a “snow”-stopping year of theatre this year! We started off with “Little Women”, which was a heartfelt production of a classic piece of literature - a real winter warmer! Epiphany brought the annual John Snow Charity Showcase, where we performed and tech-ed away with the lovely Snow performing arts community We also put on a student devised comedy, in collaboration with South College’s Oswald’s Players Theatre Company, called “Snowmeo & Julinest” Our curtain call for the year is a site-specific production of “Bouncers (Remix)”, a comic commentary on nightlife and class Thank you to everyone at Snow who has got involved, came to a social, or bought a ticket! We’ll see you next year!
John Snow College’s Charity Showcase lit up the Mount Oswald Hub Hall once again this March, bringing a brilliant evening of music, dance, and community spirit Now in its fourth year, the event has fast become a college favourite, celebrating student talent while raising money for a good cause. This year’s showcase featured 19 performances, all put together by our students The line-up had everything from powerful solo songs and cello pieces to upbeat group dances, musical duets, and energetic ensemble numbers A crowd favourite was Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, performed with plenty of flair and humour Later, a solo Sri Lankan dance stunned the audience with its vibrancy, rhythm, and emotion, a real celebration of culture and artistry What makes the event special is how much of it is student-run
From rehearsals to lighting cues, social media posts to stage set-up, students lead the way, supporting each other to make the night a success It’s a real team effort, and a chance for people to try something new or show a side of themselves outside their lecture halls. This year, the showcase raised money for Newcastle Women’s Aid, chosen by the student organisers for the important work it does supporting women and children in the region Every ticket sold helped contribute to this brilliant cause, with a total of £651 raised for Newcastle Women’s Aid The Charity Showcase is always one of the most joyful nights of the year. It brings people together, shows off what our college community can do, and makes a real difference beyond campus We’re already excited to see what next year’s performers have in store!
John Snow Boat Club has had a successful year of rowing. With a great start of the year at freshers fair getting lots of people on a rowing machine in a competition for the fastest 100m, with Nathan even joining in. We had a great intake of new rowers this year who competed in Novice Cup in Michaelmas term and produced very competitive times compared to other colleges. Our senior squad has had a great year competing at races both within Durham and further afield, even going to the Lake District to race. WRITTENBYEMMANOONE
We have had a great season this year and we are on track to finish third in the league improving from our previous years’ performance. We have won the majority of our matches this year and have been able to get some of our club members into DU squash both in the teams and in the development squad. Training has been well attended, and our club socials have been a highlight of the year, notably our mixed socials with Hild Bede and Collingwood.
WRITTENBYWILLHALL
This year has been the most successful year in JSUF history. The A team finishing 3rd in the premiership, only losing out to 2 full DU lineups. The B team, which was only formed last year, has been seen drastic improvements. Last year losing every game, to this year only losing once in the league and narrowly missing out on the division 1 title on goal difference and also making it to the floodlit plate final. The combined points tally of our A and B team is the highest in the university which is quite the achievement considering the club didn’t exist when I first joined John Snow in 2021.
It’s been another great year for sport at John Snow College. From amazing promotions to growing participation across the board, Snow athletes have once again proven that we’re a force to be reckoned with. This year, we saw huge successes across a wide range of sports. Phoenix Pom lit up the competition floor with their unmatched energy and clean routines, taking home a win at the Intercollegiate Cheerleading Competition. Ultimate Frisbee soared to new heights, claiming a dominant 9–3 win at Varsity and showing taking their B team all the way to the Floodlit final. Our Men’s Football squads held strong performances throughout the season, with John Snow As winning the Premiership. And let’s not forget Darts, who have gone from strength to strength, earning themselves a well-deserved reputation throughout college. Behind every goal, tackle, and try has been a community of students who show up for each other. Our sports captains have led with passion, and we’ve seen record numbers of students getting involved with college sport in some form. Whether you played your heart out in the A team or joined a taster session for the first time, you were part of what made this year so special. Here’s to another year of sporting excellence at John Snow
This year, we had more new additions to our club than ever! We were selected to send a team for Loughborough Varsity in first term, and we played hard, winning the varsity for Durham. The rest of first term was then spent training, with the occasional friendly match, for the league in second term. The league had us showing up for odd timed matches each week (a lot of 9ams), with our players trying their hardest: our As are standing at the bottom of Prem currently in joint 4th with 3 other teams, and the Bs finishing in the middle of their Div 2 league. We now start preparing for South varsity, and for other tournaments such as Serves Up and the Festival of Sport!
This year, Phoenix have had a fantastic year and have welcomed a huge amount of new members. We started the year with performing at a floodlit for John Snow Football, and performing during half time at the Durham v Loughborough varsity. In second term, Phoenix participated in the intercollegiate cheerleading competition where we achieved 1st Place Pom, 2nd Place All Girl Stunt and 2nd Place Co-ed Stunt with some amazing high scores. This term, Phoenix are looking forward to performing at Snow Day and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings us!

Ahead of the Easter term, we hosted a pre-season training session to boost participation — and it worked! We saw a great uptake, which led to strong engagement and enthusiasm throughout the third term. Our matches so far have struck the perfect balance between fun and light competition, offering a welcoming space for newcomers while still keeping that competitive edge. Looking ahead, we're aiming to stay in the Premier League following the upcoming playoffs. Fingers crossed for another successful season next year!
WRITTENBYWILLSHAW
This season our 5 teams have competed across the college football leagues, battling in plenty of tough fixtures. We have ended the season with our A team winning the Premiership, and the B team gaining promotion to the Premiership for next season, both of which are incredible firsts for the club. It's been an amazing season of working hard for each other on and off the pitch and the club has reaped the rewards.

John Snow Darts has evolved this year from a singular team to three teams, the As, Bs and Women's, acquiring some brilliant players from our freshers recruitment and throughout the year. Our A team finished 3rd in the league in the 2024/5 season, an incredible achievement, and our Bs and women’s team worked hard and performed exceptionally well in their division. Our cofounders, Nick and Jack, are immensely proud of the team that has been assembled, with an incredible spirit that can only be described as a family. We look forward to what next year holds for John Snow Darts.
WRITTENBYEVIEWOODHOUSE
Following on from last year's win in the Festival of Sport for the A team, and the B team being promoted into the Premiership League, John Snow Tennis has entered the new season with enthusiasm and determination. While there haven’t been many matches so far, fielded teams have been strong and team spirit high with members enjoying the challenge of stronger competition. With plenty of the season still ahead, the club is focused on building momentum, supporting each other, and making the most of every opportunity on and off the court. We hope to continue the success of last year in our future matches.
WRITTENBYHARRIETSPENCE
We've had a great year for JSNC with 4 competitive women's teams and two mixed! 3/4 of the women's teams have finished in the top half of the table, with both our mixed teams in the top 2 from each pool. Jess Bishop has led the C team to promotion and the final of the plate for the second year in a row, which has been a result of unwavering determination from all the team! Girls from the As and Bs joined together to defeat South in our college varsity 41-12! With plenty of socials, charity events and well planned training from our captains, JSNC have had an incredible year! We have had more freshers join then ever before and are all looking forward to our final celebrations in June. With a talented executive committee for next year, JSNC are looking forward to a bright future.
Building on the successes of last year, JSWFC had an unbeaten run in the league, resulting in promotion for the second consecutive season. The team also reached the quarter-finals of the floodlit cup and proudly represented Durham at the York Varsity. Three of our players were selected to play in the Hill vs Bailey match, reflecting the talent in this year’s team. There has also been an increased Snow representation across all DU women’s football teams. This year also marked JSWFCs first tour. The team is looking forward to next year in the Premiership!

JSCC has had a strong start to the outdoor season with a convincing first game 10 wicket win. Overall the team has been very positive and we’ve seen great club growth this year, with a core team supporting the exec. It’s been great to see some new faces this year, with our freshers making up a majority of the regular team, who have all impressed in their development and achievement. We are looking forward to continuing the T20 league, with some more wins to seal the season.

And last but not least, our Music Masterclasses in collaboration with DSM and some fabulous local music teachers, organised by secretary extraordinaire Lowri. The F1 Society at John Snow College is a vibrant and growing community for Formula 1 enthusiasts. We host exciting social events, including breakfast meetups for early morning races and themed socials for Grand Prix weekends like Emilia Romagna (Italy). Our initiatives have fostered collaboration with other college F1 societies, strengthening inter-collegiate connections. One of our standout successes is the launch of an F1 Fantasy League, which has drawn significant interest and engagement. With a mix of passionate fans, fun events, and strong partnerships, the society continues to build momentum and bring F1 excitement to college life.

Societies at Snow have been particularly active this year, with a range of weekly sessions, socials and events. From the Christmas quiz to the Charity Showcase, this year has been very busy! We’ve also had 5 newly ratified societies to add to the 30+ we already had - expanding the coverage of interests and hobbies students can partake in. Every society exec and member has worked so hard this year, and it was amazing to see so many people rewarded for their efforts over the year in the Sports and Societies formal dinner I’ve truly loved being Snow’s 2024/25 Societies Officer and am looking forward to seeing how Alex will help societies to flourish even more next year!

This year we provided students with wide ranges of book recommendations from all kinds of diverse genres under the goal of making reading enjoyable, exciting, and ‘for’ everyone! We enjoyed movie nights featuring films selected by students themselves, readalongs with hot chocolate and marshmallows to warm up those cold Durham evenings, and student-submitted book recommendations We hope to make reading fun for everyone and offer a temporary respite to the turbulence of reality Asalways, untilnextchapter!

This year Students with Disabilities Support Society have started a new series called Barrier Free Bites wherein the members of the exec take the time out to go and review the various food and drink venues that Durham has to offer and give a detailed exploration of their accessibility! We started the series in the hopes that we could help students to feel more comfortable exploring the city and experiencing the great venues Durham has to offer! On some occasions we opened Barrier Free Bites up for society members to come and join the exec and contribute their own experiences to help write the reviews! Behind the scenes we've also been getting in contact with other disability agents to work on some university-wide accessibility guides for next year and to turn Barrier Free Bites into a newsletter, both to increase its reach across the university and to turn it into a more accessible, digestible format!
Our first social of the year was a triumph. The exec team pulled together brilliantly to deliver the very first roast dinner With a two-course meal and an impressive turnout, it was a delicious start to our events calendar! The second social was another huge success. Despite our President dislocating her knee and making an unexpected trip to A&E, the exec team once again rose to the occasion and ensured the Snow community was wellfed. Thanks to the added bonus of Snow’s Sunday Shenanigans and the pub quiz, we saw a fantastic mix of attendees from all year groups. We also loved collaborating with Welfare Wednesday this year gravy-dipped roasties and Yorkshires were a muchloved comfort for many. All in all, this has been one of our best years yet, and we’re proud to continue our mission of bringing the comforts of home to college life John Snow’s best food society? We certainly think so.
This has been the most successful year for the Igloo, not only from a financial perspective but also from a student perspective as to what the bar has offered The success of the bar is only good for the students of JohnSnowasitgivesusthefundsto progress with ideas to improve the shared space. Keep an eye out as to how the Igloo may become even better in the years to come This success is predominantly down to both a better offering in product range and activities in the igloo Menu changes, including the introduction of traditional cocktails, and diversifying the wine options have insured that the Igloo offers whatstudentsreallywantintheirbar Events-wise we have had an unbelievable bar programme throughout the year, which will continue provided people keep comingbackformore!
Firstly, the successes of the pub sports teams in darts and pool in their respective competitions has kept Mondays and Thursdays lively. Live Music Tuesdays have created sustained excitement and demonstrated the diverse range of music opportunities both in college and university wide The very popular pub quiz on a Sunday has seen a minimum attendance of 50 students all gunning to be the biggest brains, with a wide range of winners of our bar tabs! The final success story events wise comes from the use of the space by both our sports and societies fortheirsocialevents
The Igloo is now firmly on many bar crawl routes, and everyone at college should be proud of the space we have created.Ihopeforthesametocontinue next year, with even more wonderful events to be scheduled. A prospering Igloo only leads to a better John Snow Student experience, and we will do our upmosttomaintainthisprogress.
In June 2025, John Snow College proudly hosted a taster day for students from the Linacre Institute The Linacre Institute is an educational charity dedicated to supporting high-achieving sixth-formers from Northern state schools. Since its founding in 2014, Linacre has empowered over 300 students to pursue places at top universities, offering long-term, personalised support rooted in academic curiosity We also welcomed a
The Insight Days are designed to challenge perceptions that top-tier universities are only for the privileged, and to show that Durham is a welcoming, inclusive space for students from all backgrounds.
The days kicked off with a tours of the campus and a practical Personal Statement workshop This was followed by lunch in our Igloo Bar with tours of our student accommodation and trying on of gowns After lunch students were given an insight into student life by taking part in a presentation delivered by our students In the afternoon, students rotated through two taster sessions trying their hand at everything from rounders and cheer to darts and art The mix of sport and society showcases helped demonstrate the vibrant extracurricular life on offer at Durham.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students highlighting the personal statement workshop, the inclusive student talks, and the range of activities as standout moments
It was a day filled with insight, fun, and a strong message: Durham University, and especially John Snow College, is for everyone
This year’s Snow Day brought high heat and even higher energy as we celebrated the end of the academic year. Our theme this year was ‘Snowchella’ which brought the festival to John Snow and Eleanor Huyton’s brilliantly creative T-shirt design ensured everyone looked the part We had amazing student bands including 6ft Grandma, Better than Madonna and Cache Out on the stage throughout the day. Two Js Pizza van and Scoops n Smiles went down like down like a treat and the Igloo stayed true to its name as we had the air conditioning on full blast so we could take a break from the heat People tested their luck on the inflatables which included a rodeo bull, surf machine and human hungry hippos As always, the highlight of the day was our tribute act This year it was Midnight Miley who sang classics like Wrecking Ball as well as Hannah Montana throwbacks Her energy was incredible, and the crowd was loving it All of this wouldn’t be possible without this year’s Entertainments Officer, Ella Medley She worked incredibly hard to make Snow Day the success it is, and we’re glad the sun shone to give John Snow a day to remember As the sun set, we ended the day singing along to ‘Angels’ as per John Snow Tradition. Day is a lively, full-day celebration packed with entertainment, featuring live music from student bands and tribute acts A highlight of the day was the headliner ‘Midnight Miley’, whose energetic performance lit up the stage and got the crowd dancing The event also included pizza and ice cream vans and giant inflatables To show off their college spirit our students also wore a ‘Snowchella’ themed t-shirts designed by one our very own students Eleanor Huyton It was a wonderful day, enjoyed by all and we were thrilled that sun shone giving our community a day to remember!

At Durham, the SCR is a long-standing tradition a space for students, alumni, and staff to connect and contribute to College life At John Snow, we’re proud to honour that tradition, but we’re not here to simply preserve the past We’re building an SCR that looks forward
Future-focused, inclusive, and open to all, our SCR is a living network one that stretches across the country and the globe, across industries and generations
Whether you graduated this year or twenty-five years ago, whether you were a JCR President or quietly made Snow your home – this is your community
Our first meet-up will be at the John Snow Pub at 2pm on Sunday 24 August, sign up is not necessary but please feel free to complete our signup form to let us know that you are coming!
Everyone’s connection to John Snow looks a little different, and that’s exactly what makes our SCR special Whether your College days were packed with activity or passed in quieter ways, you’re still part of a community that values where you’ve been and what you’ve gone on to do.
You don’t need to be highly involved to take part The SCR is designed to be flexible a community you can stay connected to in a way that works for you. Whether you're ready to offer support or just want to keep in touch, there’s a place for you here
Here’s what you might gain from being involved:
Offer advice or insight to current students small actions can make a big impact
Share your story your path might be just what someone else needs to hear.
Reconnect and grow your network with fellow alumni, staff, and friends of the College
Spot new talent and consider hiring from a trusted, growing network of Snow graduates.
Stay in the loop, from College developments to occasional events and opportunities to contribute
Rediscover the Snow community because a sense of belonging shouldn’t have a time limit
It’s easy to join, and even easier to find value in being part of something that’s growing, evolving, and grounded in shared purpose
If you are graduating this summer or are an alumnus of some years’ standing, we warmly encourage you to join the John Snow College SCR via our LinkedIn page
We do not want cost to be a barrier to entry, so a range of membership contributions is available We simply ask that you consider supporting the development of the SCR and its future events, both virtual and in-person. All income and expenditure will be overseen by our independent College Advisory Board. H O W ?
