THE BRITISH CLUB

September/October 2025

September/October 2025
Dear Members,
I trust you’ve all had a wonderful summer break. As we ease back into our routines, I would like to invite you to keep the holiday spirit alive at our Jungle Safari Pool Party happening on Saturday, 14th September. It’s the best way to reconnect with fellow members and enjoy the lingering summer vibes before the year-end festivities begin!
If you haven’t secured your tickets for the British Club Charity Ball 2025, I encourage you to do so soon. This year’s auction and raffle prizes include standout items such as a signed Arsenal shirt and much more! A huge thank you to our sponsors Brighton College, Progeny and Guinness, and all our prize sponsors for making this event possible.
I’m also pleased to announce the completion of our gym renovation. With its new look and refreshed layout, we are now able to introduce a wider range of fitness classes and experiences, delivering even more membership value through our upgraded facilities. I would also like to use this space to warmly invite all members to join us at our regular Members Connect Nights as it is a great opportunity to stay updated on upcoming events and happenings at the Club.
On the F&B front, we’re rolling out new drinks promotions and bar bite specials designed to keep dining at the Club both enjoyable and affordable. Whether you’re watching live matches at Windsor Arms or Scores, the atmosphere at both outlets add so much more excitement to the game!
As one of our favourite events of the year approaches, I can’t wait to see all the creative costumes around the Club. This year, Halloween celebrations will take place on 31st October and Guy Fawkes fireworks will happen on 1st November. This means there’s even more time to enjoy the fun — from trick-or-treating to dressing up and everything in between.

Dear Members,
My transition between Thailand and Singapore has been smooth and enjoyable, thanks to the warm welcome, assistance, and embrace of the British Club Staff and members.
In the first three months, the team and I have been working to evolve the Club’s operations. All departments have been involved in the strategic planning of the financial year, and we’ve created a dynamic annual plan that sets us on our journey to elevate the membership experience, engagement, and the Club community.
We’ve also been honoured to be part of Singapore’s 60th Birthday celebrations. Our membership SG60 promotion was an outstanding success, and we had a great time celebrating National Day.
In addition to the new member experience, I’ve also begun to strengthen our infrastructure with one of our key assets: our staff. Working closely with our people & culture department (human resources), we’ve implemented a new work culture that supports, guides, trains, and develops a productive and rewarding career path for our staff from the moment they join the Club until they leave. We’ve also encouraged them to learn from their failures and celebrate their successes.

All our departments now participate in a “Birthday Dash,” where we surprise the birthday celebrant in the Club with a birthday cash voucher, cake, and picture.
Staff birthdays are also celebrated monthly with all departments together, cutting the cake and giving each other a warm round of applause.
Hard work and going the extra mile deserve to be rewarded, and that’s exactly what we do monthly with our employee of the month programme. We recognise two employees, one from the back of house (the Heart of the Club) and one from the front of house (the Face of the Club), with a certificate of appreciation, a cash voucher, and a warm round of applause from their fellow colleagues at the town hall meeting.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

Exclusive Event for British Club Members
91 Tanglin Rd, #01-03, 02-02
Guest of Honour Christine Argillet
Meet Edwina, a proud mum of two who juggles her role at Netflix’s Singapore office with running her own women’s tennis clothing brand! Since joining the Club, it has become a cherished haven for her family to relax, play tennis, and take part in a variety of sports activities. Read on to discover more about her story!
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
My name is Edwina. I have two wonderful children: Eliana, who is 10, and Myles, who is 6. I work at Netflix’s Singapore office and am also the founder of Baseline Apparel Singapore, a women's tennis clothing brand. We became Club members shortly after moving to Singapore in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. We appreciated the relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to play tennis, even if it was just singles. My children have enjoyed participating in various sports activities, including swimming and tennis lessons.
Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family.
My kids enjoy exploring a variety of sports and activities across Singapore. As a family, we love traveling throughout Asia, spending Christmas back home in Australia, and enjoying our summers in Europe. Living between Australia and Europe makes it easy and exciting to plan family holidays that are all about fun and making lasting memories together.
What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?
My kids adore spending time at The Hangout and exploring the grounds, which offer a safe and contained environment. This gives me the chance to relax with a smoothie or a glass of rosé at the Verandah Café or down at SCORES, where I can also watch or play some tennis.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
Without a doubt, the Murgh Mahani is my go-to dish! I find myself craving it almost every week. I often head up to the Club just to satisfy that craving. The tandoori kitchen is outstanding, and I tend to overindulge until it’s time for my next treat.
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
I loved the Jubilee celebrations in June 2022! The Club did an excellent job organising the festivities, and my parents happened to be visiting Singapore at the time, which made it even more special. We all enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch and took part in the many activities arranged for both kids and adults.
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
Tennis is clearly a passion of mine, and it inspired me to create Baseline Apparel. It’s been a wonderful way to explore my creative side by designing clothing for myself and friends to wear on the courts. I hope to expand the line to include kids' and teens' apparel, so I can encourage my children to take up the sport and enjoy playing together during our family holidays.

A useful metric to consider when it comes to feasibility of retiring at 65, is the Old Age Dependency Ratio (OADR).
‘What is the greatest economic risk facing the world today?’
This is the proportion of people aged 65 or older per 1,000 people aged 16 to 64. In 2016 the proportion was 285 per 1,000 and it is expected to shift upwards to over 450 per 1,000 within 30 years.
This question has been one of many posed in recent investment seminars I have attended. The question elicits comments spanning trade between the US and China, geopolitics, Brexit and even climate change. These are all vitally important to the future of the world as we see it.
This leads us to question the sustainability of pensions to fund retirement. The UK was forecasted to have spent around GBP125 billion on the State Pension in the 202324 UK tax year compared to circa GBP16 billion in 1986. To put this into context, this represents around 42% of total welfare spend in the UK by the Government.**
Alongside these, I propose we include ‘longevity’.
Pension benefit spending (which includes the State Pension, Pensioner Housing Benefit and Pension Credit) equated to around 5.1% of GDP in the same tax year.**
It is a fair assumption I believe to see this as a growing problem with demand increasing, as more individuals reach the State Pension age and the value of the payments increase. I would question how long this level of spend can be sustained by the UK Government.
The Royal Central website in 2025 mentions it was King George V who first sent a message to a British national on their 100th birthday in 1917. British centennials now expect to receive a message from the King on their 100th birthday, 105th and every year thereafter.
In September 2014, The Daily Telegraph published an article on the ‘centenarian team’. This is a Whitehall Office who make sure centenarians receive a birthday card from the Monarch. The ‘Centenarian Team’ are now seven people strong- an increase from a single person only ten years ago.*

A number of individuals amongst the older generation are actively choosing to work past the age of 65 in the US and throughout Europe. Working longer delays the need to draw capital from investments and pensions to fund retirement and the option of semi-retirement should be considered. ‘Pre-retirees’ has emerged in recent years in financial publications to describe this older working generation.
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) confirmed in 2023 there were 16,140 centenarians in the UK.
Life expectancies have risen consistently with each generation expecting to live longer than their parents. This trend was refuted in a few articles in 2018, but the long-term trend is clear. The world is getting older.
The age of 65 as a retirement point is often discussed but appears to have little merit as people are much more active into their later years. Examples such as Warren Buffet (94 years of age and only recently announcing a succession strategy for Berkshire Hathaway) to Fauja Singh who sadly passed away in July this year at 114 years of age and who completed his last marathon in 2013 at the age of 102.***
An older population needs to support itself for longer. To explain it is best to consider yourself retiring (as most people I speak with intend to) at 65 years of age. If your life expectancy extends to 100 then you will most likely be retired for one year for each year you have worked. This just isn’t feasible.

While naturally the notion of living a lengthy, prosperous and healthy life is positive, there is no simple answer to the question of building a sufficient base of capital to fund a longer period of retirement. We may assume a longer life will equate to a longer period of retirement.
To fund a longer retirement should you consider extending your working life, reducing spending expectations in retirement or making your capital work harder for you?
I believe our lifestyles and work habits are in the process of undergoing substantive transformations, and this will continue in the years and decades ahead. In ‘The 100 Year Life’ (Gratton and Scott, 2021) the amusing terms “owls” (Older and Working Less) and “not yet past its” are used to describe the extension of the working life.
I believe a change in our approach to retirement is essential if we hope to create meaningful and lasting lives for ourselves—both individually and collectively as a society.
Alongside this, having a flexible asset base which you can draw from without being penalised is important. Allocating capital to investments which have limited flexibility can be an issue and of course exit penalties should be avoided if they represent an impediment to you being able to access capital as and when required.
Working with a financial planner earlier in life can help you prepare you for a longer future, with sound advice, cashflow modelling alongside dynamic and forward thinking.
There are benefits to saving earlier if you have the means to, but sometimes this isn’t the case and making more of your capital at a later stage in your career requires even more consideration.
After all, on the basis of probabilities, a longer retirement hopefully awaits us.

As the holiday season is in full swing, here are a couple of ideas from the Sustainability Committee for some fun, eco-conscious activities.
Numerous green and environmental nonprofit organisations in Singapore focus on sustainability, climate action, biodiversity, conservation, and environmental education. You can become Earth helpers with City Sprouts, the Singapore Environment Council, the National Parks Board, Plastic-Lite SG, and the Waterways Watch Society, or be ‘trash’ heroes with Green Nudge or Trash Hero Singapore. For a comprehensive list of opportunities, visit www. futr.sg.
If you are planning a trip, consider staying in accommodation that minimises its ecological footprint through energy conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable sourcing. Look out for hotels with filtered water dispensers to cut down on single-use plastics, smart-room controls, and restaurants that follow farm-to-table practices and food-waste elimination programs.
If you’re staying in Singapore, explore local biodiversity spots using public transport to reduce carbon footprint and support sustainable tourism. Enjoy the TreeTop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir or go cycling through the scenic trails of Pulau Ubin. Visit ethical wildlife centres like ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre and nature reserves like Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. It supports conservation and instils empathy for animals and ecosystems.
Try pledging not to buy anything non-essential (clothes, toys, gadgets, etc.) for a month to reduce consumption and save resources. You could also join a swap event or host a garage sale with friends or neighbours. Alternatively, you could repurpose old clothes, packaging, or food scraps into art or useful items, such as tote bags made from T-shirts or compost bins made from buckets.
Create an eco-calendar filled with daily or weekly green goals such as a leftover-based cooking day, a plant-based meal day, a green movie night, or a nature walk. Learn about inspiring eco-heroes and the actions they've taken to help the planet. Then, make your own pledge to protect the Earth.
Remember, every small step matters in building a cleaner, healthier world!
The Sustainability Committee is looking for passionate members to join their team! If you're interested in contributing to a greener future, please contact sustainabilitycommittee@britishclub.org.sg.

Another quarter, another tale of triumph, tenacity, and occasionally, the cruel whims of football. The British Club Football teams found themselves on the cusp of glory this quarter, with both our SuperVets and Open Age squads making positive cup runs. While the results weren’t quite what we’d hoped for, the journeys and the sheer effort certainly were.
Our SuperVets faced off against SCC in the Cosmo SuperVets Plate Cup Final, ultimately succumbing to a 3-1 defeat. The post-match analysis, however, painted an intriguing picture. The consensus, even amongst the most impartial of neutral observers from Hibs and CBD, was that BCFC, despite the scoreline, looked the stronger side. Our goalkeeper, Scott, spent a relatively quiet afternoon, facing what were affectionately (or perhaps exasperatedly) described as “soft” goals, with precious few other direct threats. It seems the football gods, much like a British summer, can be rather unpredictable.
Our manager took the tactical bullet for the initial 20 minutes. A 3-5-2 formation, designed to unleash attacking verve, unfortunately resembled more of a leisurely stroll in the park under a scorching sun. This, coupled with two early goals conceded, meant we were chasing the game before most of us had even properly hydrated. A tactical reshuffle at halftime saw us revert to a more familiar 4-4-2, bringing a much-needed sense of stability to proceedings.
The energy levels were noticeably dented by the early exertions and relentless Singaporean heat. SCC played a shrewd game, circulating the ball at the back and turning our pressing into a game of ‘catch me if you can.’ We pulled a goal back, making it 2-1, and applied significant pressure. The equaliser remained elusive, and with it, the momentum that might have swung the final in our favour.
Not to be outdone, our Open Age Team made a valiant charge to the quarterfinals of their competition. Their journey concluded with a 5-1 loss, but reaching the last eight speaks volumes about the talent and determination within the squad.
Despite the results, the collective spirit across both teams was commendable. Plans are already underway for pre-season friendlies and intersection games after the summer break. Interested members can contact football@british.org.sg to get involved.

It’s not all just sweat and toil in the Padel Section. Our burgeoning membership has had the benefit of attending several off-court activities that the section has put together, including a dinner at the Treetops Terrace with the Squash Section and an Italian wine tasting event. Both were well attended, and it was great to see everyone enjoying the F&B at the Club in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
The Italian wine tasting offered us the chance to explore some lesser-known grape varieties and go on a liquid tour a round the country, expertly guided by Laura Goddard of Once Upon a Vine fame. The journey explored Prosecco, whites, and reds from all areas, which proved to be a fascinating and entertaining way to explore the country.
For the first time, we joined forces with another section (Squash) to offer the ‘Squadel’ Section Dinner, which was attended by some 60 people. Chilled margaritas provided a Mexican flavour to the evening and a nod to the country credited with starting the padel revolution.
With over 30 million ‘Padelistas’ globally, padel is widely recognised as the fastest-growing racquet sport in the world. Across our ‘Red Dot’ island, 17 clubs now offer padel, which is a fantastic sign of the sport’s momentum. For those unfamiliar, keep an eye on the screens at SCORES, which regularly showcase matches. Just ask Alvin if you’re keen to catch the Pro Padel Tour in action!
Business as usual has resumed in the section, with our successful Tuesday socials over the summer at SingPadel, along with the monthly rodeos with well-deserved recent victories by Ben Kiggell and Stuart Watson.
For those curious about this exciting and addictive new game, feel free to get in touch and come join us!

2. What do you like best about being part of the pickleball section?
1. Why did you start playing pickleball at the club?
It’s difficult to form social groups when you’re older, especially as expats. We had a common interest in playing pickleball and wanted to become part of a community. We found our pickleball ‘family’ at the Club. We were newbies with no background in racquet sports, but the other section members were very supportive, and we picked it up quickly. So, if you’re interested, don’t let a lack of confidence hold you back — just have a go!
We have so much fun! Lots of laughter, and it’s not too competitive. It reminds us that there is so much joy to be found in playing games. Afterwards, we enjoy socialising at the Club with our fellow “picklers” over dinner and drinks.
3. Favourite food from the kitchen?
Guy: The “Mickey” pizza! Mickey customises a special vegetarian pizza to my taste.
Carris: A toaster!
Guy: Veggie quesadillas!
In other news, our section recently hosted Disco Drinks and Dinks Night! Polyester, laughter, dinking, and beers were in plentiful supply as we played and boogied our way through the cheesiest ’80s hits Spotify could spin.
A “Tournament of Skills” added to the fun, featuring pickle-themed beer pong and some smash practice with founding members Mano and Andrew “Viney” Vine gamely serving as targets! The night also doubled as a birthday celebration, complete with a pickleball-themed cake.
Stay tuned as more events are in the pipeline, including themed nights, an inter-club tournament, and a section trip. With our brand-new kit, the sky’s the limit!

The section’s monthly Handicap Round Robin tournaments have never been more open than they are now. The new genius handicapping system, designed by Keith Carpenter (AKA The Prof, our resident PhD and handicaps guru) has been brilliant in giving anyone who can raise their game on the day a good shot at winning it all. One player who’s done just that is Leo Poloniecki, who won the April and June events (with Alex Weeks taking the honours in May after losing to Leo in the final the month before). Well done to both winners and to our runners-up. Enjoy the moment before The Prof tweaks your handicaps and makes a repeat triumph that much harder.
The HCRR is open to all section members and is played on the last Saturday of every month. All standards are welcome.
Competition isn’t limited to within the section. The more mature players (which, to be fair, is most of the section) have been competing in the Singapore Squash Racquets Association (SSRA) Veterans’ League. The BC team won 2 out of 8 fixtures, with two of the losses decided on countback –both clubs won 2 of the 4 lines played, but we lost on total games or, in one case, total points. Agonisingly close! James Buchanan was our star performer with 4 wins from 4, while Rahul and Alex Weeks both secured 2 wins from 2.
The Veterans’ League is famously social, and the team enjoyed plenty of rehydration and camaraderie with their fellow oldies at the clubs we visited. We’ve especially enjoyed hosting the visiting sides at the new SCORES. There’s more of the same to come when the Cosmo League restarts in August.
This summer, the section has bid—or will soon bid—farewell to some great friends leaving Singapore, while also welcoming plenty of new joiners to keep our community strong and vibrant. We extend a warm welcome to them all.

In this year’s British Club Open Tennis Tournament, we said goodbye to a Club legend, welcomed a new generation of players, and crowned both repeat and first-time champions. With over 200 entries across singles and doubles events, the tournament set a record for participation. Across 125 matches, the competition was fierce, with many thrilling three-set battles.
In the Ladies’ Singles, Katelyn Chua swept through the draw and defeated Myrna Jivraj in a repeat of last year’s final. Katelyn’s consistency and composure made her a standout. In the Plate competition, Lisa Thanh claimed the title with a win over first-time singles player Elissa James.
The Men’s Singles saw Richard Wetzki claiming the title, defeating Club legend Charlie Thomas in what was his final British Club Open appearance. It was a fitting farewell for a player who defined excellence at the Club for years. In the Plate final, Joe Yue Ran took the win against club stalwart Neil Fullick.
In the Ladies’ Doubles, Mari Goodman and Emma Pike were a formidable team, combining tactical awareness and strong teamwork to lift the trophy in a close-fought final against Cash Siersma and Myrna Jivraj. Christina Park and Zoe Hawkins claimed the Plate title with a solid performance against Nina Burgess and Laura Reilly.
Charlie Thomas didn’t leave the tournament emptyhanded. He partnered with Jonny Wright to win the Men’s Doubles title, adding one last championship to his storied career. In the Plate draw, Matt Reilly and Moh Chean Sim emerged victorious.
The Mixed Doubles event featured new pairings and emerging juniors. Kristy Carter and Matt Rawbone emerged as champions after a hard-fought match against Amalia and Andres Gomez. In the Plate final, Juliet Ward and Ben Kiggell came out on top against Kate Yuan and Neil Fullick in an epic three-set marathon.
A record number of juniors entered this year, including Artur Gawda, Bartosz Gawda, Ethan Song, Thomas Wright, Shahmeer Allam, Luca Goldie, Amalia Gomez, and MollyMay Bailey, with many making deep runs.
With thrilling matches, emerging stars, and heartfelt farewells, the BC Open 2025 was a resounding success. Congratulations to all players, and a big thank you to the organisers, volunteers, and supporters who made it possible. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for an even bigger tournament in 2026.
