President’sMessage
Dear Members,
On behalf of the Main Committee, I'm delighted to welcome Tee Bale as our new General Manager. Tee brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Deputy General Manager at the British Club in Bangkok. With over 14 years of relevant experience based in Asia, we are confident in Tee’s ability to skilfully steer our critical strategic agenda and guide the Club towards continued success in the years to come. Find out more about Tee on page 5.
For members spending the summer here in Singapore, we’ve got a fantastic lineup of events from an epic Nerf Gun Battle for the little ones, to a Rock and Roll Party for the grown-ups. I’m also delighted to share that our Charity Sale is back this August. It's a fantastic opportunity to give a new home to some of the Club's preloved furniture, equipment, and decorative items, all while supporting our charities. We encourage you to take this chance to declutter your homes and donate reusable items to the sale.
I have two personal messages for you; one is an appeal to you as members to think about participating in the Club governance. We have several sub-committees which cover many areas, and you don’t have to have expertise to participate. A great way to meet other members passionate about the Club, learn how it operates and actively participate in its future is to join a subcommittee by reaching out to the GM or any MC Member.
The other message is using the Club. We’ve probably got the most diverse selection of meal offering and venues for all occasions. Sitting on the newly refurbished Scores, or at Verandah close to the Pool or Windsor and up to the Mountbatten the prices have never been as attractive as before. I can only encourage you to make use of what your Club offers - it is amongst the best value in Singapore. Watch this space for even more exciting opportunities for family celebration in the future.
Finally, I hope you're making the most of the summer break, with many of you returning home to see family, and when you're ready to dive back into Club life, don't miss our Jungle Safari Pool Party! Wishing you all a lovely summer ahead and I hope to see you all in the club in the coming months.

Dear Members,
It’s been a pleasure to see the vibrant activity at the Club since I joined. From sections, events, banquets, outlets, kids, and sport, there’s something for everyone.
I want to thank everyone who attended our Father’s Day celebrations at Mountbatten Bar & Grill and Windsor Arms. It was wonderful to see family members treating their dads to a special afternoon lunch at the Club.
The Pool Party Celebration for the King’s Birthday was a huge success. It was fully booked and enjoyed by over 200 members poolside. Well done to everyone who participated in the games and made it into the pool.
The sports facilities are continuing to be upgraded. A new sports counter and retail area have been added inside the gym, and there’s a plan to install new flooring in the main gym area.
Looking ahead in the Club calendar, members’ little ones are set to enjoy a fantastic summer camp from Monday, 14 July to Friday, 18 July. There will be a host of different games and activities to bring summer to everyone.
The fun for the kids doesn’t stop there. Tennis Summer Camps are running from July onwards, so get involved and get your kids on the court.
It’s been a pleasure meeting some of you over the first few weeks of being at the Club. I look forward to continuing to meet all the members in the coming weeks and months ahead.

GETTING TO KNOW TEE BALE,
OUR NEW GENERAL MANAGER
A warm welcome to Tee, our new General Manager at The British Club! He's already jumped right in, meeting the staff, Main Committee, and many of you since joining us on 2 June. Be sure to say hi if you see him around the Club! To help you get acquainted, we sat down with Tee for a quick Q&A.
Welcome to the British Club Singapore! Let’s start with your journey — could you tell us a bit about your professional background and what led you to the British Club? What drew you to this particular role?
Over the past eight years, I’ve been running the British Club Bangkok. During that time, I fell in love with the Club and its culture. I’ve developed and expanded the club into a lively and engaging community. So, when the opportunity arose to replicate that in Singapore, I felt the natural progression to take the challenge on. To my knowledge, I’m the only General Manager to run two British Clubs internationally, so it’s a pleasure to have the chance to create two successful communities in two beautiful countries.
What excites you most about being part of a Club like ours, with such a diverse and close-knit membership?
With 50 different nationalities and a large number of members, we can host, develop, create, and deliver a wide range of member activities. These activities can be socially, business-driven, or sporting. This allows me to use my entrepreneurship from conception to delivery, with the amazing team I have around me, the sky is the limit.
First impressions matter! What were your initial thoughts when you stepped into the Club for the first time — the atmosphere, the people, or even the view?
We have a sense of pride and tradition, but we also enjoy modern facilities. This allows us to enjoy our Club by both locals and expats in a picturesque hilltop setting. From the moment we arrive, smiles are seen everywhere from members to staff. It’s a place to enjoy working in.
Outside of work, how do you unwind? Any hobbies or interests you're particularly passionate about that members might be surprised to learn?
With my current increased size, members might be surprised to learn that I enjoy all sports. Unfortunately, I’ve fallen out of shape, but I’ve recently started my return to full fitness. I play squash and tennis, I’m a keen football player, I golf, and I used to run half marathons several times a year. IT and tech are also a big part of my life and interest.
As our new GM, what are some early priorities or ideas you’re exploring to enhance the member experience or grow the Club community?
As the General Manager, my intention is to enhance the membership experience. I want to give members added values and benefits. I want to drive membership usage by increasing the delivery of reasons to visit the Club across all social and sports activities. And I want to constantly strive to improve facilities and create a Club culture that’s second to none.
You’ve landed in one of the world’s most vibrant cities — have you had a chance to explore Singapore yet? Is there anything on your local ‘must-see or must-eat’ list?
I’ve visited Singapore on multiple occasions and have enjoyed many of the country’s amazing offerings. But I’m looking forward to getting onto the golf course here. The botanical gardens have been amazing each time I’ve visited for morning jogs. And how can anyone not enjoy the local food offerings? The best chicken rice in Asia, hands down!
And finally, for a bit of fun — if you had to describe your leadership style using a movie character, who would it be and why?
This would have to be Jason Statham. A smart, strong character of a gentleman who always delivers on time.

Member in the Spotlight
This month, we're shining spotlight on a British-Japanese family who truly make a splash at The British Club! With two energetic daughters who practically live in the pool, Michael Bishop and his family has embraced the Club's community and all its offerings. From swimming lessons with Sharon to satisfying post-swim carbonara cravings, get ready to dive in and hear their story!
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
We’re a British-Japanese family living nearby in the Bukit Timah area. My wife grew up in Singapore, and we met here 11 years ago. We joined The British Club in 2023, but we’d been coming for years as guests—many of our close friends and family are members. It always felt like a second home, so once we moved nearby, joining felt like the natural next step.
Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family.
We have three daughters, aged fifteen, seven and three, and a seventeen year old son. As a family, we love spending time outdoors, going for swims, and enjoying good food together. The Club gives us the perfect balance with space for the kids to play and a relaxing atmosphere for us to unwind. We also try to stay active: both my wife and I regularly use the gym, and the girls are currently learning to swim with Sharon and the amazing team at the Club.
What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?
The pool is definitely the kids’ favourite—they’d stay in there all day if they could. Their swimming lessons with Sharon and her team are a real highlight each week and have given them so much confidence in the water. After a good swim, they head straight for the carbonara and chicken nuggets, and for us, it’s a mix of a gym session or pool time.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
Definitely the nasi goreng or the pizza from The Verandah. Always hits the spot and has become our go-to that never disappoints.
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
Definitely Guy Fawkes Night—with the front seats to the fireworks, great food, and very thoughtful activities and entertainment for the kids. We also love the annual family pool parties, which are always a hit with our girls. The food at these events is a highlight too!
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
Although we enjoy a margarita at The British Club, I’ve perfected my own signature sugar-free margarita recipe. I’m currently working on a Negroni using Japanese whisky.

Testimonials
Our whole family grew up with British Club swimming and our time in Singapore wouldn’t have been the same without it. Thanks for all the memories, smiles (some tears!) and friendships formed.
From Parent: Emma Thomas Swimmer: Matilda, Jessie and Jude
Congratulations on reaching the 25-year milestone! That's quite an incredible achievement and I think the Archibolds have been swimming with you for at least 15 of those 25 years.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the Total Swimming team. Ethan has been swimming with the BC for 10 years, starting in the Developmental Squad, through to becoming captain of the Barracudas and then continuing to Masters. As he moves on to his next journey in the UK he has many memories of his time swimming at the club. Thank you.

Masters Swimming (Through the Years):
The Coaches:
Coach Alain
The best part of teaching? Watching scared swimmers become confident ones—seeing them go from clinging to the wall to gliding through the water with big smiles.
Coach Julian
I like doing what I do because I get to see the students I teach grow, not just, physically stronger but improving on their techniques as well, with each lesson they come for.
Coach Liam
I enjoy every interaction with the kids while imparting them the sports that I love. They taught me to be patient and enjoy the simplicity of friendship.
Teacher Clydi
Teaching in The British Club is really special because we are able to be a part of each student’s growth, not just as a swimmer, but as a person as well.
Teacher Rebecca
The British Club offers a unique environment where teaching feels personal, engaging, and genuinely rewarding. It's a place where learning and fun go hand in hand.
Teacher JR
I love teaching at The British Club, because the kids always appreciate the relationship being built and they are all definitely fun to be with!
Teacher Sharon
25 years of coaching have taught me we're not just teaching lifeskills - we're shaping relationships with water that last generations. When former students return with their own children, trusting us to teach water safety and enjoyment, that's the truest measure of our impact.

How Members can Help Lead the Way in Environmental Stewardship
By Anne Schot, member of the Club
since October, 2017
Here are some initial ideas on how we can become a front-runner and model for sustainability.
Lead by example and practise mindful consumption
– Be conscious of your own water, energy, and waste habits within the Club and act accordingly. For example, turn off lights, electronics, and air conditioning in rooms when not in use. Unplug chargers and devices when they are not needed. Use the stairs instead of elevators when possible.
Support the Club’s eco-friendly practices
– Actively support the use of reusable bottles and the reduction of single-use plastics such as straws and takeaway containers. Contribute to recycling programmes for items like textiles, sports shoes, and tennis balls.
Be an advocate for a sustainability vision
– Encourage other members to adopt a formal commitment to sustainability, supported by clear goals and guiding values.
Be involved
– Encourage support from Club management and fellow members by actively discussing and demonstrating how sustainability aligns with the Club’s brand and values.
Adopt, support, and recommend smart upgrades
– Advocate for energy-efficient systems, water-saving measures, and waste reduction initiatives to enhance the Club’s sustainability efforts.
Promote sustainable dining – Encourage the use of locally sourced, seasonal, and organic ingredients. Request greener menu options that highlight environmentally responsible dishes. Proactively support efforts to minimise food waste, such as partnering with local charities or food recovery programmes.
Proactively support awareness events
– Take part in and help promote eco-themed talks, film screenings, and workshops to raise awareness and inspire action within the Club community.
Recognise, support, and incentivise green behaviours
– Encourage and promote recognition or reward programs that highlight members and staff who actively support and contribute to sustainability efforts.
Promote, accept, and support data-driven decisions
– Proactively support the Club in tracking and publishing key sustainability metrics (e.g. energy and water use, waste volumes), as well as conducting regular audits and benchmarking against other private member clubs.
Motivate the Club to connect with the broader community – Encourage the Club to collaborate with local sustainability organisations or join green business coalitions. Request Club management to share success stories and milestones on social media and in industry publications to build the Club’s reputation and inspire others.
What else do you think we can collectively do?
The Sustainability Committee is looking for passionate members to join their team! If you're interested in contributing to a greener future, please contact sustainability@britishclub.org.sg.
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO COMBINE MY PENSIONS?
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO COMBINE MY PENSIONS?
The theory of a job for life is now an outdated thought, and it’s likely you’ll approach retirement holding a number of pensions. But when does it make sense to combine them?
David Jenkins, Financial Planner at Progeny, explores when it’s sensible to consolidate your pensions.
The UK government introduced automatic enrolment into workplace pensions in 2012, to help people better plan for their retirement. If you’ve lived or worked abroad, you may have pensions located in one or more other countries too. With an assortment of pension pots, this could lead to some confusion when it comes to drawing down on your pension savings in retirement.
Fortunately, it is possible to transfer older pensions into one scheme with a single provider, but deciding whether this is beneficial for you can be challenging.
Combining pensions
The advantage of combining pensions is that you’ll be able to hold all of your retirement savings in one place. It is easier to manage and eliminates the risk of forgetting a pension. Whilst this may seem unlikely, it’s worth noting that over £19 billion of pension pots have been mislaid.
Benefits of consolidating
There can be some compelling reasons to bring your pension pots together. One of the biggest drivers for doing so is to get a sense of how your retirement plans are shaping up; you may even be able to retire earlier than you originally expected! Some of the benefits for combining your pension pots include:
More flexibility – older or more traditional pension schemes could leave you with limited options. Modern options have greater flexibility and you may be able to access your pension earlier.
Greater control – one pension with one provider is a simpler setup to manage and avoids you potentially losing smaller pensions.
Lower fees – administration charges on multiple pensions can add up, and some providers can be much more expensive than others. Consolidating things into a single provider can stop fees eating into your savings.
Reduced admin – if you have multiple pension plans it can be difficult to manage. By choosing one provider you can reduce the amount of admin or even move to a digital or app-based option, so you can see in an instant how your pension is performing.
Increased investment potential – some older schemes may have limited investment options, which could mean that your pension isn’t working as hard. Taking advantage of modern options can help you get the most from your pension savings.
Reasons not to combine pensions
There are some situations where it might not make sense to combine pensions including:
Final salary schemes – if you have a final salary pension, you’ll have a guaranteed income with inflation increases built in. It may be better to stay in this scheme as it will give you a clearer picture of your retirement income and it is likely to provide for a surviving spouse if you pass away before reaching pension age.
Good performance – your pension may be performing well and delivering what you need it to. It might then make sense to keep your pension as it is.
Loss of benefits – some pension schemes include attractive benefits, such as guaranteed annuity rates or critical illness cover, which you could lose if you transfer.
Exit fees – if you will have to pay a significant amount to exit your pension, you’ll need to consider whether the penalty is worth it.
An international view
There are several considerations to your pension planning if you live or work overseas. It is worth noting that you are only able to contribute a maximum of £3,600 each year for a maximum of five years if you are non-UK resident, and you would need to have a pension
scheme set up and in place before moving abroad. When you return to the UK, you should consider increasing your pension contributions to help boost the value of your pension pot in retirement.
Next steps
If you’re considering combining your pensions, it is useful to chat through your plans with an expert. If your pension amounts to more than £30,000 the law states that you must take appropriate financial advice before making any decisions about transferring it.

CRICKET Where Do We Play Cricket?
By Robb Annan, Member of the Club since May, 2018
Singapore’s social cricket scene has evolved dramatically in recent years. With fewer grounds available, teams have had to get creative—some now play night matches under lights, others squeeze multiple games into a day, and a few have even turned to indoor leagues.
The British Club XI has taken a different route: we’re hitting the road!
Regular tours to Kuala Lumpur are now a staple, and later this year, we’re heading to Perth. We’re also excited to cross the Causeway more frequently to play at the Johor Cricket Council ground, one of the region’s premier turfpitch venues. Johor hosted matches during the U19 Women’s World Cup earlier this year and remains in excellent condition.
These fixtures give us the chance to play longer formats, a true test of endurance and skill. While it’s not quite a five-day Test, it’s a welcome challenge beyond the typical weekend game.
What’s Coming Up?
After our mid-season break in July and August, we’ll resume nets and fixtures in late August. Nets take place most Tuesdays at The Cage in Dempsey from 8pm. Whether you’re new to cricket or a seasoned player, everyone is welcome! Come down and give it a go.
In September and October, we’ll continue with local matches and cross-border trips to Johor before gearing up for our Aussie summer tour, timed with this year’s Ashes. The First Test kicks off in Perth on Friday, 21 November, and our squad plans to catch several days of play—and squeeze in a game or two of our own.
Back in Singapore, we’ll be hosting Ashes watch parties at SCORES throughout the five-Test series. Keep an eye on our events calendar for more details!

What About Junior Cricket?
Junior cricket is also on our radar. If your child is keen to learn and play, simply scan the QR code to register your interest. We plan to run a series of clinics after the summer break, subject to sufficient sign-ups. More details will be shared as the new season approaches.
FOOTBALL The British Club Football Section Kicks Off in Laos!
By Paul Davies, Member of the Club since June, 1997
Laos was a little more adventurous than previous tours, partly due to our limited knowledge of Vientiane and the unfortunate incidents that had occurred in recent years (notably the tragic case involving several backpackers). As a result, we conducted a recce to assess safety, scout potential opponents, check appropriate hotels—and of course, scope out the sports bars, restaurants, and nightlife.
The report came back with flying colours! Not only did we find friendly and welcoming locals (as is often the case across much of Asia), but also a fantastic football Club to play against.
Our touring party ranged in age from 23 to 69. As per tradition, a few players arrived early to squeeze in a round of golf on Thursday, while most of the team landed on Thursday night or Friday morning. One last straggler even showed up on Saturday morning!
Our local opposition was Tsubasa FC, whose founder Billy, along with Jimmy and his ever-dependable Club partner Tommy, helped organise everything football-related—from pitch bookings to publicity and logistics. Beyond running the Club (with over 60 members), Billy and Tommy also ran a thriving sports academy with more than 90 children aged 4 to 16 playing each week.
On Friday, we played a 7-a-side tournament against Tsubasa FC. We soon discovered that 7-a-side was their main format—they didn’t play 11-a-side regularly, but they played small-sided games multiple times a week. While we
7-a-side tournament squad Laos 2025
competed valiantly across our two teams, the locals edged us out with a score of 7–4—though, of course, the real winner was football. Dinner that evening was a traditional Laotian meal at Lao Derm Restaurant, followed by a relatively early night.
Saturday was the big day—our 11-a-side match at the Laos Army FC Stadium. The stadium seated a few thousand and while we didn’t quite fill it, we still drew a decent crowd! The match ended in a 2–2 draw, and it was a fiercely competitive and hard-fought game with both sides having chances to win. While the scoreboard was even, we claimed the moral victory, having played through injuries and illness with a depleted squad.
Beyond the pitch, the tour carried a deeper purpose. We were proud to raise over US$600 from our tour fines for Soksabay Charity, an organisation we’ve supported in the past and which now has a chapter in Laos. This fantastic cause, dedicated to assisting vulnerable communities, also gratefully received donations of quality footballs and kit generously contributed by our touring party.
We wrapped the tour with an end-of-tour dinner at the beautiful Settha Palace Hotel, where we handed out our traditional awards, shared a few laughs, and closed the trip in good spirits.
For those new to the section, the British Club Football Section has been thriving for nearly 20 years, with regular weekly games played in 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and 11-a-side formats across all age groups—from 16 to 67+.

PICKLEBALL Pickleball Friendlies in Full Swing: British Club vs. Singapore Cricket Club
By Manoharan Karthigasu, Member of the Club since October, 2021
On Saturday, 25 May 2025, the Pickleball Section hosted a spirited friendly match against the Singapore Cricket Club. This is our second friendly match on home court following a previous matchup against The Tanglin Club late last year.
Roughly 37 players turned up for the occasion, including 14 from The British Club, gathering around 6pm for an evening of camaraderie, competition, and plenty of “pickle” action. Over the course of three energetic hours, we played 11 doubles matches on the dedicated pickleball courts at the upper tennis area. The matchups featured men’s, ladies’, and mixed pairings, all played in great spirits. The British Club clinched victory in 7 out of the 11 matches. Shoutouts go to Konal Sharma, Marina Krishnan, and Andrew Vine for multiple match wins — but of course, the true winner was the lively atmosphere and new friendships forged.
After the games, players cooled down over dinner and drinks at the newly revamped SCORES, enjoying fresh bites and celebratory toasts. The relaxed setting was the perfect way to cap off an evening of sport and socialising. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our Pickleball Committee, especially the organising team, who made this event possible.
We have also been experiencing phenomenal growth in recent months and are thrilled to announce that custom British Club Pickleball attire is currently in the works! The design process is already underway, and we look forward to sharing stylish, high-quality gear that our players can proudly wear during matches and social games alike. It’s more than just sportswear — it’s a badge of camaraderie and Club spirit.
With interest in pickleball skyrocketing, there’s never been a better time to pick up a paddle and join the fun. Our sessions are designed to make everyone feel right at home — all while having a great time and getting a good sweat in!

TAEKWONDO
Tae Kwon Do for Everyone
By Adam Slater, 4th Dan Black Belt, Member of the Club since April, 2003
I’m often asked if there are any prerequisites to train in martial arts, or if students need prior experience before joining a class. The answer is no. Our classes are fully integrated —male and female, young and old—and complete beginners train alongside third Dan practitioners in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Many people believe that martial arts is purely about self-defence or that it’s simply a combat sport, but neither is really accurate. True self-defence is about avoiding confrontation and understanding the situations that lead up to it. In Taekwondo (TKD), trainees are taught to protect themselves and minimise harm. This is more accurately described as self-preservation rather than self-defence. While students do learn how to fight, martial arts training goes beyond physical techniques. Just as important are self-control, emotion regulation, respect, and tolerance— all important values of any martial art.
Because most of TKD movements are neither natural nor intuitive, practitioners are challenged to develop focus, selfdiscipline, awareness, and perseverance. Mastery comes through repetition; learning to control one’s movements, improve hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, and sharpen reflexes requires countless hours of dedicated practice. This process teaches students to sustain their attention and build resilience over time.
Regardless of your initial fitness level or physical ability, everyone faces different difficulties in training. TKD is a discipline where everyone develops at their own pace, and where you constantly challenge your own limits. As the saying goes, “A black belt is a white belt that didn’t quit”. Those who stay the course truly begin to excel only after reaching that milestone.
These attributes taught in TKD help children develop the ability to start and stay committed to a task until they master it. This process builds self-confidence and fosters an indomitable spirit, along with a strong willingness to stand up for their principles and beliefs. These values positively influence their everyday lives —at home, in school, and eventually in the workplace—benefitting them in meaningful ways.
Come along for a free trial! Whether you’re new to martial arts or looking to build confidence, focus, and fitness—everyone’s welcome!
