Message
Dear Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a welcome to all new members of the Club. We often hear members refer to the Club as their home, whilst away from home and hope you are embracing that theme.
By the time you read this message, I’m sure many of you are enjoying the newly renovated Scores. The buzz around the new open space, fully renovated changing rooms and bathrooms, menu offerings, and Grab & Go corner have been very positive. A fresh and exciting upgrade to the Club. To all members and partners who joined us for the Grand Opening, thank you for your continued support! Beyond its fresh look, Scores also incorporates several sustainability features, demonstrating the Club's commitment to environmental responsibility. If you haven't already, I encourage you to experience the revitalised space upon your next visit to the Club. To further encourage you to have a look, there are also some tempting deals available for food and beverages.
The British Club Charity Ball is back again this year, and early bird tickets are now available. Tickets to the ball are always high in demand so I encourage all members to secure your seats early. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors. This year we welcome Brighton College as our Platinum Sponsor and Progeny and Guinness as our continued key sponsors. We are incredibly thankful for the support our sponsors provide to this major Club Christmas event.

Dear Members,
I hope you had a wonderful Easter break with your family. This month, I’m looking forward to welcoming Mark Kitto, a playwriter and performer himself, to the Club. Mark will be performing ‘Chinese Boxing’, a theatrical play that discusses ‘China and the West today’ by ‘taking you back to Peking in 1900’. This historical story has enormous relevance to the present work and how the world gets along with China. Mark visits the Club on 10 May and tickets are still available.
It has been an exciting period for the Club as the Sports Centre have been busier than ever with the opening of Scores, the expansion of gym and the new changing rooms. To improve your member experience, we've also relocated the towel pickup to a dedicated counter which also doubles as a concierge desk, providing a convenient point of contact for members to register for any sports section or fitness classes. If you have any feedback on these upgrades, please share your thoughts with us at memberrelations@britishclub.org.sg.
I’ve also noticed that the Club is becoming increasingly lively with children's parties in the recent months. One popular location would be our Verandah Terrace with exclusive access to the lap pool. Last month's mermaid appearance at the pool was a huge success, and it brought so much joy to the children. It’s been our pleasure to provide a space where young ones can create lasting memories, and I look forward to more imaginative events and transformations at the Club.
As always, our ongoing activities and events are here to entertain our members, from children’s activities to adult events like Comedy night. If you’re enjoying the Club, share your experience with your friends and family as our SG60 Member Referral Program entitles you to not just $260 in dining credits, but also tickets to an exclusive event at Eden Hall. Dive into the magazine for more details and everything that’s happening at the Club!

DUAL RESIDENCE AND DOUBLE TAXATION TREATIES
Many individuals who have left the UK, have bought property abroad, may have a right to live in another country and might even be tax resident there. But does this mean they are a non-UK resident? William Degen, Financial Planner at Progeny provides some comprehensive guidelines for expats to consider.
It’s a common misconception that just because you own property abroad or are a tax resident that you are entitled to a non-UK resident status, but unfortunately this is incorrect.
Determining residence
When speaking to clients about UK residence, the first thing to discuss is our domestic law position.
That’s the UK legislation, namely the Statutory Residence Test (SRT), and to some degree case law, where concepts have been challenged since its introduction in 2013.
This first crucial step decides how the UK sees the individual in terms of residence for a complete tax year. With three layers to the SRT and a requirement to work through it in order, the test gives each individual a clear outcome as to whether they are UK resident or not for each tax year in question.
The test factors in a person’s work, homes, family
and time spent in the UK, but never their intention, never where they consider themselves to be resident nor whether that individual is resident in another country.
When advice isn’t sought before leaving the UK, or perhaps becoming non-UK resident was just not possible, the individual may find themselves a ‘dual resident’. This means resident in more than one country at the same time – a concept that is entirely possible. This would be the case where an individual was UK resident under the SRT and resident under another country’s domestic law position. Quite often UK tax years don’t align to other countries, meaning it might only be part of the tax year affected, which can cause further complexity.
What to do if you are dual resident
Finding yourself dual resident can be confusing and often unexpected. It could mean that each country will have taxation rights over your income and gains, possibly on a worldwide basis. The first thing will be to consider whether the UK has a Double Taxation Treaty with the other country. The UK shares treaties with over 100 countries and even with countries that would be considered as tax havens.
The aim of a Double Taxation Treaty is to avoid or alleviate double taxation. We might consult a treaty for a variety of reasons, the most common of which
is to understand which country has taxation rights on income and/or gains. In the case of dual residence, a series of tie breaker tests will determine where the individual is resident for the purpose of reviewing the remainder of the treaty, the individuals ‘treaty residence’.
Unfortunately, areas of these tie breaker tests are not always clear and can be ambiguous. Ultimately, the outcome will be important in understanding your taxes and how you will be taxed in each country.
Work with a professional
Whilst navigating what is a complex area, I would always recommend you seek advice from a business that understands these complexities. It is also important to bear in mind that this may not be quick to resolve.
When determining your residence, the advice timeline is likely to look as follows:
Find out your UK residence position for each tax year in question – remember this can differ between tax years.
Seek advice in the other country – they will have their own set of rules to determine your residence position there and how they wish to tax your income and/or gains.
Singapore + (65)6225 0825
Consult the Double Taxation Treaty –this might be to ascertain treaty residence but will also be used to determine taxation rights between the counties.
Apply the theory to the compliance – in the UK, to make a claim to be treaty resident in another country that restrict the UK’s taxation rights or to make a claim to receive tax credits for taxes paid elsewhere, is likely to take place in a selfassessment tax return.
If you are looking for further guidance on residence and taxation when living abroad, please get in touch with our team – we are happy to help.

WILLIAM
THE INVICTUS WAY:
Our Principals' thoughts on Fostering Diversity, Wellbeing, and Academic Excellence.
1. What should a family expect from their Invictus experience?
Families can expect to experience a proud and vibrant sense of care that resonates throughout our entire school community. Guided by our Core Values of Commitment, Aspiration, Resilience and Empathy, we take pride in nurturing the holistic development of each student. This approach is reflected in our passionate team of school staff, who work selflessly to ensure that our school remains a sanctuary of learning and personal growth.
2. How does Invictus attract and retain a diverse, international student body?
One of the reasons we actively seek diversity is because it makes us inherently stronger and there is nothing more satisfying than walking around school and hearing five different languages and seeing students from completely different backgrounds collaborating on projects. Additionally, our team works hard to remove barriers, offering scholarships and support where needed, but what really keeps families with Invictus is the genuine sense of belonging our community fosters. Whether it's through the celebration of cultural festivals or
ensuring our curriculum reflects and respects multiple perspectives, we ensure every child sees themselves within their education. It's commonplace to find students teaching each other about their culture or sharing stories about their home countries, and I perceive this as the Invictus spirit in action.
3. What’s the secret to building such a strong bond between the school, parents, and the community?
Our proactive parents play a pivotal role in maintaining a sense of engagement within our school community. Our dedicated PTA supports school initiatives and fosters strong home-school partnerships, strengthening our child centred approach. Our parent class representatives also play an important role in ensuring that our students benefit from a cohesive support system that extends beyond the confines of the campus.
Although we are proud of the regular positive feedback that we receive from our parents, we always want to improve. Our parents appreciate the personalised attention their children receive, the open lines of communication and how we receive and listen to perspectives and suggestions for improvement.
4. How does Invictus define success for its students beyond academics?
We have strong pastoral systems taking a layered approach to supporting every student; these complement and further drive academic success as we know students not at the top of their game (for many reasons) may not achieve their full potential. This starts with the Form Tutor who meets the student every day and is their mentor for their educational journey at Invictus. They are supported by trained pastoral leaders, fully qualified counsellor and through our partnerships with external providers, particularly in support for those with specific learning needs.
5. What’s the one thing you want every Invictus student to take away from their time here?
I want them to leave knowing their worth is in no way defined by test scores or their grades and that their ability to listen carefully to others to develop measured and thoughtful perspectives that reflect their beliefs and values is much more important. One of our graduates recently told me, "Invictus taught me that I can study hard and still find time for myself and others." That's the balance we aim for. Whether through our extracurricular program, community service projects, or daily classroom interactions, we want students to discover their passions and learn how to use them to make a difference in their lives and the lives of those around them. If they leave us with that combination of confidence and compassion, we've provided the holistic opportunities we hoped to.
6. What’s the proudest moment you’ve had as principal of Invictus so far?
Seeing the smiles on the faces of our students, parents and staff on a daily basis.
Leading a school that is clearly a happy and safe place for students who enjoy their time learning. Seeing the myriad of moving parts of a school come even further together, all focused on further improving the students’ experience at Invictus; and through this the academic success of students and their continued development holistically, preparing them for the future.
There are so many, but lately, it's been watching our students take the lead on sustainability and STEAM-orientated projects. Just last week, a group presented their plan to reduce paper waste, complete with a cost analysis and an implementation timeline. What made me proud wasn't just the quality of their work but how they listened to
feedback from the community to adapt their proposal. These moments, where academic skills meet real-world problemsolving and empathy, are why I love this job. But truthfully, I feel proud every time I walk through the school and see students, happy, challenged, and fully engaged in their learning.
7. If you could give one piece of advice to students navigating today’s world, what would it be?
John Lennon once reflected that his mother had always told him that the key to life was happiness. He also told the tale that once at school he and his class were set an assignment, to write an essay on the key to life. While his peers furiously wrote down their thoughts on the model answer, he simply wrote “Happiness!” Giving him feedback, his teacher told him that he did not understand the task. Lennon retorted that perhaps the teacher did not understand life. Lessons to be learnt there for all of us about why we are here on earth, what we do with our time, what our focus in life is and maybe what it should be...as well as valuing the importance of listening to the wise words of our parents.
Never stop learning! School will support you in meeting the academic challenges of examinations and entrance to university, but that is not everything. I attended a large careers fair a few months ago and what was being said by leaders of business in many fields was that academics are important to open doors, but most of the skills and knowledge you need you will learn on the job; it was attitude and the perhaps softer skills that were critical. The ability to critically reflect and take appropriate action, communication skills - storytelling, resilience to change and “failures” and finally, as one CEO put it, I also need somebody people won’t mind spending 8 hours a day with every day!
Don't be afraid to show the world who you are. The world is changing fast, and the most driven people I know are those who stay curious and adaptable. At Invictus, we encourage students to try new things beyond their comfort zones - maybe you'll discover a passion for coding, debate, or the environmental sciences. Remember, it's good to fail early and often as failure isn't the opposite of success; it's part of the journey. Some of our best learning moments will come from projects that didn't go as planned. So, take risks, ask questions, and don't forget to enjoy the process. After all, education isn't just about preparing for the future, it's about making the most of the present.

This family goes all out for Halloween, but what about the rest of the year? This month, we shine the spotlight on the Mclhagga family, who are a familiar sight at the Club, enjoying activities like swimming, football, and more. Discover their Club journey below!
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
We're the Mclhagga family. We've have been making Singapore our home for 16 years. We joined the British Club to connect with fellow expats and find a slice of home away from home. The community spirit and fantastic facilities were an instant draw. Kimberly was introduced to the Club through a work friend, and our family fell in love with it immediately.
Let’s dive into family fun! Share with us a little about you and your family.
We're a family of four— James, Kimberly, Teagan and Harley. James works within the payments software industry, leading the technical support organisation across APAC. Kimberly works in the Operational and Technology Resilience for one of the major banks in Singapore. Our children, Teagan and Harley, were both born in Singapore and attend local secondary schools. Teagan is passionate about martial arts, and Harley is an avid gamer.
What is you and your children’s go-to activity at the Club?
Our go-to activity at the Club as a family is definitely swimming. The kids love splashing around in the pool, and it's a great way for us to unwind and stay active. We are massive fans of the pool parties! James also currently holds the role as the Convenor for the British Club Football section, spending his Saturday afternoons with fellow members playing the wonderful game. Kimberly, on the other hand, can often be found in the gym, making full use of the various equipment available.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
That's a tough one! If we had to choose, we would say the fillet mignon at Mountbatten is a firm favourite. Followed closely by the Windsor Burger and don’t get us started on the salad variations available at SCORES!
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
Halloween is a special time for us as a family, and we love fancy dress. The Club's Halloween parties are always great fun, and it's wonderful to see so many members making an effort to dress up. We were lucky enough to win the costume contests in both 2022 and 2023.
Finally,
tell us something interesting about yourself.
James hails from Manchester and is obsessed with Manchester United and football in general. While still actively playing for the British Club football section, James has recently completed his coaching certifications with both the Singapore and English FA. Kimberly, originally from the Jersey Channel Islands, has lived in Asia for 24 years, spanning both Hong Kong and Singapore.
....we would say the fillet mignon at Mountbatten is a firm favourite. Followed closely by the Windsor Burger and don’t get us started on the salad variations available at SCORES!
How can we reduce our impact on the climate?
By Anne Schot,
member of the Club since October, 2017
Reducing our impact on the climate starts with making sustainable choices in our daily lives. We know that using less energy, opting for eco-friendly transport, eating sustainably, cutting waste, conserving water, supporting renewable energy, and offsetting our carbon footprint all help build a more sustainable future.
But have you considered how your investments impact the climate?
Responsible investing is a powerful way to lessen our climate impact by channeling your money into sustainable and low-carbon industries. Here’s how you can invest responsibly to help combat climate change:
1. Review your retirement investments and switch to sustainable options
Consider Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) funds that prioritise companies committed to sustainability. Many ESG funds focus on reducing carbon emissions, promoting clean energy, and upholding ethical business practices.
2. Invest in green bonds
Green bonds finance sustainable projects like renewable energy, clean transportation, and climate resilience initiatives. By investing in these bonds, you help direct capital toward a greener future.
3. Invest in renewable energy and clean technology
Explore opportunities in companies or Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) focused on energy-efficient innovations, electric vehicles, sustainable transportation, and renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro. As the world shifts away from fossil fuels, these sectors continue to grow and drive a sustainable future.
4. Choose low-carbon index funds
Invest in index funds that prioritise companies with lower carbon footprints, such as the MSCI Low Carbon Target Index or the S&P 500 ESG Index. These funds help align your investments with sustainability while maintaining broad market exposure.
5. Support companies with Net-Zero commitments
Invest in companies that have pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions within a set timeline. Many corporations are transitioning to sustainable supply chains and improving energy efficiency, making them strong choices for responsible investing.
6. Engage in shareholder activism
As a shareholder, you have a voice. Use your voting power to support resolutions advocating for stronger environmental policies or engage with company leadership to promote sustainable practices.
MAKING SMART CHOICES
Reduce your energy consumption at home
• Use LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances.
• Install smart thermostats to reduce energy waste.
• Unplug electronics when not in use.
• Where possible, switch to renewable energy sources like solar.
Choose sustainable transportation
• Choose a fuel-efficient, hybrid, or electric vehicle (EV).
• Walk, bike, or take public transport whenever possible.
Eat a low-carbon diet
• Eat more plant-based meals and reduce meat and dairy consumption.
• Choose local, seasonal, and organic foods to cut transportation emissions.
• Minimise food waste through meal planning and composting.
Reduce waste and consumption
• Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers to cut down on single-use plastics.
• Choose second-hand clothes and furniture to reduce waste and avoid fast fashion.
• Repair and upcycle items instead of discarding them.
• Recycle correctly and opt for products with minimal packaging.
Conserve water
• Take shorter showers to reduce water usage.
• Install water-efficient appliances and fixtures.
• Collect rainwater for gardening and outdoor use.
Offset your carbon footprint
• Choose airlines that offer carbon offset programs for your flights.

BOOK CLUB
By Tasneem Laviers, member of the Club since June, 2012
The British Club Book Club is so much more than just another book club. We now have a solid group of 20 members who are enthusiastic about reading, analysing themes of books we read together. In addition, our members organise outings and excursions based on books covered in our meetings.
Most recently, we read The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali which discussed friendship, betrayal in the midst of social and political change in Iran. Themed with this, our members took the meeting offsite to enjoy Iranian cuisine together. In 2023, we read The Perfumist of Paris (a story evoked by the study of fragrance) by Alka Joshi and in conjunction with this theme, we attended a perfume making workshop together. Where possible, we invite the author to join our book club session. We invited authors Dr. Anitha Devi Pillai and Charmaine Leung to discuss their books and had a guided tour of the Keong Saik area from the 1930s to now.
The conveners of the British Club Book Club are Tasneem Laviers and Aisha Dhewar. We meet every two months, and the books are chosen by our members in advance for the year. They include current award-winning novels and authors from all over the world. We do make sure to feature and read at least one Singaporean author for our National Day read.
For more information on our reading list, meeting dates and general information on our Book Club, please contact events@britishclub.org.sg . We warmly welcome new members to enrich our group further. We meet at The Hideaway which is a lovely spot, surrounded by books. You will find a friendly bunch of people to meet every two months!
CRICKET British Club Kicks Off the Season in Style with Dominant Win Over Spirits Cricket Society
By Malcom Jones, Member of the Club since March 2021
The British Club Cricket section made a perfect start to the season with a commanding victory over Spirits Cricket Society at the NUS Oval. In a match that had everything—solid batting, clinical bowling, and great sportsmanship—the British Club emerged victorious, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season.
A Strong Start with the Bat
Opting to bat first, the British Club put up a competitive total of 178/7 off 30 overs. The innings was anchored by opener Rob Annan, who looked in fine form, scoring 26 off 23 balls. Kumar Abhishek also played a crucial role, contributing 23 off 23 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking. The middle order chipped in with valuable runs, ensuring the team had a solid total to defend.
Brilliant Bowling Seals the Win
Defending 178, British Club’s bowlers delivered a fantastic performance, restricting Spirits Cricket Society to 168 all out. Though the opposition’s Reddi Kotha fought hard with a half-century, the British Club attack proved too strong in the end.
Every bowler played a key role, but the standout performances came from:
• Brendan Helme – 2 wickets, maintaining excellent control throughout.
• Will Knox – a dream debut, also claiming 2 wickets.
• Sriram Changali – the star of the day, taking 3 wickets on debut and earning the Player of the Match award.
With a mix of experience and new talent, the bowling unit showed great discipline, ensuring Spirits Cricket Society never got ahead in the chase.
A Special Tribute to Simon Bignell
This match also marked the beginning of a new era for the Cricket section, as Simon Bignell stepped down as captain after eight outstanding years at the helm. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the team’s success, fostering a strong, positive cricketing culture, and ensuring the Club continues to thrive. While he may have passed on the captaincy, his impact will be felt for years to come.
A huge thank you to Simon for his dedication, commitment, and passion for the game!
A Perfect Start to the Season
The match was played in great spirits, and both teams enjoyed a well-earned post-match drink together, celebrating the game in true cricketing tradition. With this convincing victory, the British Club has set a high standard for the season ahead.
Well done to all involved—here’s to many more wins (and cold beers) this season!
FOOTBALL 2024 End of Season Awards
By Tom Hughes, Member of the Club since March, 2025
Every year, we host our Annual Awards Night—a celebration of the past season’s highs and hilarious lows. This year’s event took place at the Treetops Suite on 22 February 2025, featuring a complimentary drinks and food buffet.
Here are the major award winners:
Young Player, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Manager’s Player Awards
Josh Obejas-Boffey’s strangle hold of the Young Player of the Year award finally came to an end (although it was a close-run competition) as the young shot stopper Mayank Soni picked up his first award for the Club with his great performances for both open age and Vet’s teams.
A standout performer between the sticks last year was Scott Wharton who picked up the cleanest sheets at the Club earning him our Goalkeeper of the Year award.
The Open Age Manager’s Player of the Year went to aka ‘Gakpo’. According to Open Age Manager and Convenor. When Tom is missing from the team, we notice how short our team is without him.
The midfield maestro, Barnaby Grosvenor, won the Vet’s managers player award. Barnsey was recognised for his consistent midfield presence, tireless work rate, and ability to dictate the tempo of the game.
Golden Boot, Goal of the Season, and Player’s Player Awards
The attending players participated in a live vote on the night to decide who would win the Player’s Player awards for the Vet’s and Open Age teams, as well as the Goal of the Season.
The Goal of the Season winner came as a surprise to many—with some even calling for a recount—as Paul Davies walked away with this prestigious prize. There must have been some skullduggery involved in this one!
The Vet’s Player’s Player award was taken home by Andy Donnelly. This award reflects how much his fellow teammates value his consistent defensive displays and exceptional ability to read the game.
Tom Hughes Open Age Manager’s Player of the Year
Scott Wharton Goalkeeper of the Year
James McIlhagga Golden Boot award
The new Football convenor, James McIlhagga, swept up the Open Age Player’s Player and Golden Boot awards this year—no surprise given his remarkable 80 goal involvements in 2024. With 58 goals, James outscored Kane (29), Lewandowski (27), and Haaland (27) for total goals in 2024.
Miss of the Season and Club Donkey Awards
These are awards nobody wants but are the most fun to present.
After a long and hilarious compilation of missed chances, the live vote crowned Aleem Jivraj as the Miss of the Season winner. His infamous moment? A header from two yards out and straight over the bar with an open net waiting.
The Club Donkey award went to Paddy Flynn for a series of offences—too many to list here!
Andrew Marshal Award
The Andrew Marshal Award is the most prestigious honour in the British Club Football section, named after its founder. It is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to BCFC over many years.
This year, the award went to Rich English for his outstanding service to the Club—as a player, long-term captain, and committee member.
Unfortunately, Rich has moved on to a new chapter of his life in Dubai and was unable to attend the awards night. However, in a true testament to his dedication, he returned to play in a crucial match against Hibernians United, where he was able to accept his award.
Thank you to those who attended, and congratulations to our winners.

GOLF
Section Update
By Peter MacFarlane, Member of the Club
since July,
2022
The odds of scoring a hole-in-one on a golf course are 12,500 to 1. It’s a feat that many golfers, regardless of skill level, may never achieve in their lifetime. It takes precision, talent, and yes, quite a bit of luck!
Okay, okay… maybe it takes a lot of luck. Nonetheless, it’s a remarkable achievement that golfers chase every time we step onto the course. This year, the British Club Golf Section has already witnessed three holes-in-one from its members!
A sincere congratulations to these outstanding golfers:
• Wednesday, 8 January – William Nicholls landed a hole-in-one at Orchid Country Club during the British Club’s Wednesday Night Scramble. On Dendro 6, he struck a perfect 8-iron shot covering 134 meters!
• Wednesday, 12 March – Nik Chauhan followed suit with a hole-in-one at Orchid Country Club, once again during the Night Scramble. On Aranda 2, Nik delivered a sublime 8-iron, landing precisely at 154 meters!
• Thursday, 13 March – Steve Settle completed the hat trick at Laguna National’s Masters Course, sinking a hole-in-one on the 17th hole. Using a choked-down 2-hybrid, he launched a beautifully flighted shot— “like a butterfly with sore feet”—that rolled into the cup 167 meters away.
Three magnificent shots. Well done to these remarkable golfers!
Golf Section Tour - Phnom Penh 2025
By Nic Merrow-Smith, Member of the Club since December, 2006
Wow – what a weekend! GGG: great company, great food, great golf. Cambodia proved to be the perfect tour destination, with well-groomed courses and unhurried rounds that let us truly enjoy the game. Special thanks to Mike Hughes, our awesome (and fair!) Fines Master for keeping things fun and lighthearted throughout the trip.
Day 1
We kicked off the tour with a coach ride straight to the grand Garden City Golf Club. The facility was impressive, with
F&B outlets big enough to seat 1,000 guests. After a quick lunch, we teed off on a mature course designed by a Cambodian military elite. With water hazards on every hole, wide bunkering, and tiered greens, it was a challenge. Undeterred by the many hazards, our group stayed on track, found the fairways, and scored respectably to start the trip on a high note.
Richard Holloway, Tim Barkham, and Jackie Barkham all carded net par rounds of 36 points. Team 2 (featuring Richard and Tim) edged out the Team
Garden City Golf Club features an abundance of water, waste bunkers and sand traps
Best Ball win with 47 points, just one ahead of two closely trailing teams tied on 46. That evening, we dined in style at Pepe’s Bistro. Big thanks to our Tour Foodie, Jackie Barkham, who pre-arranged both dinner nights.
Day 2 – Vattanac Golf Club
Next up was the Faldo-designed East Course at Vattanac, which driving range alone was a dream, stretching along the edge of the golf centre and setting high expectations for the day ahead. Then reality hit. Each of us set off in individual buggies with our caddies, only to discover that this was no walk in the park. The course proved a real test, with treacherous bunkers, punishing rough, and greens that demanded laser focus. Tales of woe emerged post-round, with many golfers falling victim to frequent 3- and 4-putts on the tricky, undulating greens.
The side game for the day was a team match. Led by Tim, the Blues charged to victory in style. In the individual Stableford, guest player Akane Kobayashi delivered a standout performance with an impressive 38 points. Hot on her heels was Mike Hughes with a solid 36. Closest to the Pin honours went to Steve Settle and John Hancock — the latter having flown in all the way from Europe just to claim his coveted sleeve of BC logo balls (mission accomplished!).
We kicked off the evening with rooftop cocktails before heading to La Langka for a delightful dinner of shared platters, French favourites with a twist, and plenty of wine. Mike Hughes wrapped up the night with a fun round of Tour Fines, all collected in support of a children’s home in Phnom Penh.
Day 3: Chhun On Golf Resort
Our final round was played at Chhun On Golf Resort, the newest course of the tour. The team game was an Irish Rumble — a lively format with a doubleor-quits twist at the end. The Individual Tour Championship was still wide open, with Mike Hughes, Tim Barkham, and Akane Kobayashi battling it out in the lead group.
Unlike the first two days, we moved up to the white tees (men) — and it paid off. Mike Hughes led the charge with 41 points, thanks to some sharp strategic play. Richard Holloway and Tim Barkham followed with 38 points, while Nick Wong and Akane Kobayashi came in just behind on 37. Fittingly, three of these five were part of the winning Irish Rumble team.
When all was said and done, Mike Hughes emerged as the overall Tour Champion, with Tim and Akane taking second and third. We wrapped up with lunch and cold beers at the halfway house before heading to the airport.
Every player contributed to making this tour a fantastic event — a great showcase for both the Club and our Golf Section. Special thanks go to:

PADEL Section Update
By Jamie Salamon, Member of the Club since September 2010
In the life of every new sports section, there are watershed moments that mark growth, maturity, and progress. For us, that moment was our very first inter-club competition held at The Padel Co in Bugis against a strong Hollandse Club team.
These milestones reflect both the growth of our section’s membership and the increasing popularity of the sport across the country. At BC, the padel section is now approaching 70 members — a mix of men and women, many of whom are new to sports. The rest come largely from tennis and squash backgrounds. Nationally, the sport is thriving too, with more than a dozen clubs and venues already in operation and another two or three set to open in the coming months.
With this momentum, we felt ready to take on the Dutch Club, fielding pairings across all levels from A graders downwards. The day was scorching hot, making each best-of-three-sets match feel even tougher. It was a hardfought competition, but in the end, the Dutch team edged us out with a 4–2 win.
Our victorious pairs were Charlie T. / Matt R. and Showbhik / Jon W. The remaining pairs — Duncan C. / Ed C., Jamie S / Oli H, Andrew V. / Gary H. and Von C. / Kavita — put up a great fight but were bested by some very strong Hollandse Club opponents.
The event was smoothly run and wrapped up with well-earned drinks and a feast of BC pizzas (thanks, Craig!), perfect for some much-needed carbo loading. Everyone stuck around to chat about the fabulous venue, the thrilling games, the volleys that hit the net, the smashes that went awry, and, of course, life in general.
One of the great joys of a growing sports section is the opportunity to connect with other clubs through friendly competition. Sharing the spirit of the game, the banter, the food, and the camaraderie is what makes it so special.
A big thank you to the Hollandse Club and to all the BC players and supporters. We’re already looking forward to the rematch — this time at their Club, once their two new courts are ready!
For anyone keen to give padel a go, we play social padel on Tuesdays at SingPadel. There are also coach-assisted lessons on Thursdays, alongside a dedicated ladies’ group. Don’t be shy — come join us!
SQUASH Non-stop Squash
By The Boaster, Member of the Club since April, 2007
The British Club squash section is as busy as ever.
Our long-running box leagues are taking a break and have been temporarily replaced by a ladder system. This new format encourages more spontaneous challenges during social nights and allows for faster movement up and down the ranks. It’s also highly accessible to new joiners – anyone can jump straight onto the ladder and start playing.
Congratulations to Oliver Hopkins (again!), Andrew Marshall, and Ben Kiggell, who won their respective box leagues in the final round.
A big shoutout to Matthew Cannon for winning the February Handicap Round Robin – our monthly mini-tournament – defeating David Barkess in the final. Congratulations also to Andy Greenaway, who claimed victory in a separate February event, and to James Buchanan, our January winner.
Beyond our internal competitions, Team BC is excited to be competing in the Singapore SRA Veterans’ League (we’ve got no shortage of veterans!). We’re also looking forward to the revamped Interclub Cosmo League, which kicks off after the summer holidays.
HCRR finalists MC won
An increasingly popular feature of our Saturday socials is Long Ball Squash – a recent addition to BC Squash that’s quickly attracting a loyal following.
Sander Holman, our Long Ball Coordinator, shared what makes the game so appealing:
Long Ball is also known as the Back Court Game, where every shot must pass the red centre line. There are no short balls, no boasts, no drop shots — none of that. In regular squash, you might go for a quick kill, but Long Ball forces longer rallies. You’re hitting and moving clear, which creates a more disciplined and structured style of play. By playing deep, extended rallies, the game begins to resemble how the pros play — where the first 15–20 shots are typically solid lengths along the wall, and only when the ball goes loose do they switch to attack. Long Ball mirrors that approach.
With a strong and growing group of players now familiar with the format — and enjoying both its strategic discipline and the intense workout — Long Ball has become a permanent weekly fixture, held every Saturday at 2pm.
