President’sMessage
Dear Members,
Guy Fawkes Night signals the start of the Winter months and I hope you enjoyed the Club fireworks by the swimming pool — a truly spectacular showcase, one that highlights the unique experiences here on our hilltop location.
From this month onward, I am pleased to share that our magazine will be published monthly, keeping you up to date on the exciting events happening at the Club. We will also feature more engaging content to foster meaningful connections between members and staff, so be sure to flip through each issue to discover upcoming events and revisit the highlights from the past month.
I am delighted to invite all eligible members to attend the Club’s 43rd Annual General Meeting, which will be held in The Elizabeth Suite on Wednesday, 26 th November commencing at 7pm. The AGM is a good time for members to come together and attend an informative session that details the activities of the past 12 months and provides insight into the plans for the immediate future. We encourage participation and provide food and refreshments before the event starts.
Looking ahead, the festive season highlights include our tree lighting, pantomime, and wreath-decorating workshop—all the wonderful ways to prepare for the holidays! I also extend a warm welcome to all new members who have recently joined during the SG60 member promotion. I hope you quickly feel at home and discover a strong sense of community here.
Thank you all for contributing to the vibrancy and spirit that make our Club truly special.

GM’s Message
Dear Members,
With the summer break behind us, it has been a true pleasure reconnecting with so many of our wonderful members and families who form the heart of the British Club Singapore community.
Our team has been diligently working behind the scenes to enhance the member experience across all departments and facilities. Some exciting highlights to look forward to including the launch of the BC Kids Club, running every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. This complimentary programme is open to children aged 5–11 and offers a dynamic range of engaging activities. For our brunch enthusiasts, November brings a special treat: the Windsor Arms will debut the Live Unplugged Sunday Brunch, while Mountbatten introduces the Italian Job Brunch, two unique culinary experiences not to be missed.
Investing in our internal team remains a cornerstone of our commitment to delivering the highest standards of safety and service. As part of our newly implemented annual training plan, our full culinary team including chefs, the storekeeper, and the purchasing manager recently completed a two-day Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) training course. This included a comprehensive audit of our kitchen and receiving areas. We are proud to share that the Club passed the audit with flying colours, and every team member successfully passed the final exam special congratulations to Chef Ken , who achieved a perfect score of 100%, a rare and commendable accomplishment!
We also bid a fond farewell to Claire Hill, our Membership Manager, who has decided to pursue a new chapter in her career. On behalf of the entire team and the Club, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Claire for her dedication and outstanding contributions over the past five years. Her efforts have played a vital role in shaping the Club’s success, and she leaves behind a legacy. We wish her every success in her future endeavours.

In partnership with
What’s involved to be more involved at the Club?
by Roger Harrold, President of the Club
I have had the pleasure of participating in different subcommittees, have been an elected member of the Main Committee and am President of the Club.
Members often wonder what it takes to become more involved in the Club. This has also been raised by members at different events so we thought it would be useful to give some guidance and insight into what it really means.
The first point that must be made is that the Club has its own Management structure that reports to the General Manager. The
General Manager is a member of the Main Committee. It is a very clear rule that the running of the club is strictly assigned to the General Manager and no Committee Members should involve themselves directly in the day-to-day operations of the club. This goes directly to some Members concerns that if they participate in any Committee, they are in some form of management role or inclined to make management decisions – that is clearly NOT the case.
The second important point is that we are a member’s Club. We want to enable members voluntary participation in the
governance of the club and to make the experience as easy and as pleasant as possible.
The third important point is that the work is voluntary and there is no free ride for any member participating in Committee work. There are no free tickets or free access to events – Members are treated the same throughout the club.
It is important to have volunteer members willing to give their time and contribute to help in the governance and all aspects of the Club. The Club provides opportunities for all to get involved. It is voluntary but the experience in participating can also substantially increase awareness of the Club activities and be personally rewarding. There are many ways to get involved, some are mentioned below.
Event Attendance
A great starting point can be participation at member events. This way, you get to know other members and can engage in dialogue and share views. The Members Connect Night, which happens at regular intervals throughout the year, is a good example and provides ample opportunity to speak to other members of the Club, committee members and Club management. It’s a great way to start engaging with other members.
Sport Section Groups & Social Activities
Several of our Committee members started with involvement in a section group, such as sports, mahjong or the book club, to help facilitate the agenda and activities around a specific area of interest. All sections are keen to have new participants so feel free to reach out to individuals or the membership relations team for introduction. Most section meetings come with refreshment and are held at times most suitable for all participants.
Sub-committee
The next elevation would be, to consider sitting on a subcommittee. Subcommittee members work very closely with the relevant Head of Department to provide Member feedback. No specific prequalification is necessary to participate in any sub-committee however if you do have a certain skill such as knowledge of F&B or Accounting then clear alignment to a specific sub-committee may make sense. The sub-committee provides essential guidance and focuses on specific portfolios that are important to run the Club. They create avenues of dialogue and feedback which gives direction to the Management of the Club and provides important guidance and input into the Main Committee. The current sub-committees open to members to participate in are; Membership, Food and Beverage, Sports, Development, IT, Finance, Marketing Communications and Activities & Events and Sustainability. These committees mainly meet in the evenings once a month. They last for a maximum of two hours and cover a predetermined agenda.
What is involved? You join by raising your interest to the General Manager. This request will go to the Chair of that committee, who will then reach out to the member to introduce him/herself and give a brief overview of the scope of that committee.
Once you join, you attend the next meeting of that committee. You will be introduced into the group and can immediately
participate in the agenda items. Attendance is expected but not mandatory. If however, you do not attend for successive meetings, you may be asked to vacate the position in favour of other members desiring to participate. There is no major preparation necessary as the management teams do the preparation and the work.
The advantages are many, first you get to know more about the Club and its many opportunities and facilities for members. You get a much clearer understanding of what it takes to run a member’s Club and to balance the many different views and perspectives. You’re privileged to participate in future events and activities and your opinion will count towards what is wanted and how it’s to be provided.
You become an ambassador for the Club to other members so that you can share your views and other members’ views with the committee. You get to know many new aspects and members. Committees always provide food and refreshment during the meetings as a small sign of appreciation for the extra time you sacrifice towards the Club’s governance.
The time you spend in an active role is entirely up to each Member. You can sit on multiple sections of interest or subcommittees but as a principle the Club tries to limit it to one sub-committee per member to allow as many members as possible to become involved in the Club governance.
Main Committee (MC)
Once you have served on a sub-committee for at least one full year, you can consider becoming a candidate for election to the Main Committee (MC). Those interested should contact the Chair of the subcommittee, a Main Committee member, the General Manager or the President directly. The next step would be a short discussion with multiple Main Committee members to better understand the commitment and to get guidance about the process for election.
Main Committee members are elected at the AGM. Members of MC participate in up to 10 Main Committee monthly meetings each year lasting between 2 to 3 hours. In addition, most Main Committee members will also chair a sub-committee meeting each month for at least 8 to 9 months in each year. As a Main Committee member, there may be ad hoc matters that may demand your time at short notice.
As an MC Member, you are expected to formulate views and opinions on many aspects of the Club’s operations. All MC meetings are well prepared in advance with agendas and documentation made available by the General Management for pre-reading to all MC members. You are expected to be aware of the agenda and come prepared.
Most MC members are also a chairperson of a sub-committee. (Sub-committees work closely with the Heads of Departments to set the monthly agendas at the meetings) As a member of Main Committee, there is clearly a bigger scope of work. However, this work is also very rewarding in that you get unique insights into the functioning of the club and some of its very special characteristics. Many items require balance as not all wishes can be made reality and committee members are expected to understand the strategy and support decisions that have been reached at MC meetings. MC Members can also be called on to make short speeches or say words of welcome or thanks at relevant functions and events. Each MC member acts as an ambassador representing the club to external parties, existing members and new members
I hope this gives a good overview of how members can volunteer their time to get more involved in the Club. If you have questions or need further clarification, or wish to join a sub-committee don’t hesitate to speak to the General Manager, or any Main Committee member.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
This month, our Member in the Spotlight features Manoharan Karthigasu, who some of you may know as the Pickleball convenor. Having spent 18 years in Indonesia, Mano shares on his family’s journey back to Singapore, their love for sports, and the welcoming community at the Club.
Introduce yourself, and what made you join The British Club?
I am Mano, and together with my family — Lily, Ynez, and Kieron — we have been members of the Club since 2022. During the pandemic, we decided to move back to Singapore after spending nearly 18 years in Indonesia. By then, our kids had finished their A and O Level examinations. Having been away from Singapore for so long, we wanted to find a community we could connect with. Being a very sporty family, we also wanted to join a Club with great facilities. Having lived in the UK during one of our work stints, and coupled with the warmth and inviting community here, it was a no-brainer decision to join The British Club.
As a Pickleball convenor, are there any memorable or funny moments from pickleball sessions with members?
Two years ago, when a few Squash members and I decided to start the Pickleball section, I was amazed by the support provided by the Club. We truly live up to our motto as the Members’ Club! With more than fifty members and still growing, I will never forget the early days when we spent 10–15 minutes each time taping the court lines before getting started. After a few months, we became like an F1 pit team, able to put down and take up the lines in just minutes!
If you had to pick just one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why?
As for food at the Club, I tend to rotate among the meals, especially the specials — but each time, it’s the Pecan Lassi (less ice) without fail! My wife enjoys the salads, while my son devours almost anything whenever he gets the chance to visit the Club during his National Service.
Finally, share with us something fun or interesting about yourself that fellow members might be surprised to know.
Both my wife, Lily, and I are lifelong educators and trainers. While we’ve travelled and lived around the world, we’re glad to be back home in Singapore with The British Club as part of our life and community.
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
“To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect”
“To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect”
If you’re unfamiliar with the works of Oscar Wilde, this is a memorable quote from ‘An Ideal Husband’. Without taking these words out of context, this phrase could also perfectly articulate the rationale for taking out insurance. We buy insurance to protect us against unexpected loss and the things which are unpredictable but have a chance of taking place. Looking back through the history of insurance, there are stories of policies being secured against events that I would argue are highly improbable. In this article I look at one of the best instances of this, the unexpected data on the life insurance sector in the UK and cover the different types available for you.
A history of insurance
In 1971, Cutty Sark (a Scottish Whisky company rather than the ship) of fered GBP1M in prize money for anyone who could capture the Loch Ness Monster. After announcing the prize, the company grew concerned this might actually happen and approached Lloyd’s of London to secure insurance.
This is one of many stories where events have been insured, and in reading made me consider the practical role of insurance in our lives. In doing so, I discovered some surprising data on the life insurance sector in the UK. Direct Line Group released data in 2022 which indicated Brits appear to have some reserve in taking out life insurance in the UK, with evidence of clear under insurance.
Statistics on insurance in the UK
Insurance can take many forms, and financial plans often include costs for insurance cover such as cars, homes and health insurance.
I would suggest that life, critical illness and even total and permanent disability have as much importance as other forms of insurance. This isn’t consistently part of financial plans, with underinsurance for life insurance evidently an issue in the UK.
In 2023, the take up of term life insurance fell to the lowest level in seven years according to the Association of British Insurers and almost a third (28%) of people under the age of forty with a mortgage liability do not have life cover*.
Direct Line Life Insurance stated only 35% of the UK population have a life insurance policy in place. They also noted most Brits (63%) do not have a life insurance policy as they believed it was too expensive, but 42% of households admitted they did not know how much a life policy costs. They also noted around 6 in every 10 households agreed a life policy would benefit their family**.
More people in the UK (71%) pay for a subscription service than fund a life insurance policy. I have experienced instances where clients have been surprised an insurance premium is cheaper per month than a collection of subscription services they pay for such as Amazon, Apple and Netflix***.
Two main forms of life insurance
The collective data indicates underinsurance for life cover throughout the UK which would be substantially worse if companies did not provide group life cover. In 2023, there were 11 million people covered by group life insurance scheme and 20.6 million individual life policies****.
There are two main forms of life insurance currently known as term insurance and whole of life (WOL).
operating on a pure risk basis, where you pay for cover with no value being accrued. These policies have a determined timescale and a date when cover will cease for the life insured.
Whole of Life policies provide life-long protection unlike the definite end date for a term insurance policy. This means beneficiaries will receive the insurance benefit regardless of when the life insured passes away. Premiums are typically higher than term-based cover and the policies can be more complex.
Critical illness cover
Life policies have the potential to incorporate riders such as critical illness cover.
Critical illness is intended to provide a lump sum payment in the instance a defined major illness such as cancer is diagnosed. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in 2024, UK insurers paid out a total of around GBP1.4 billion in critical illness claims. This represented around 89% of claims or around GBP70K per claim and has increased year on year with the greatest prevalence of payouts for people in their late 40’s.*****

Beyond the Kitchen: Meet Chef Ken
A familiar face at the Verandah Café, Chef Ken is well-loved by members and staff, especially for his authentic Thai desserts. Read on to learn more about his inspirations, favourite dishes, and what he enjoys most about sharing his passion for food at the Club!
What first inspired you to become a chef?
I can’t say it was just one thing, but I’ve always found joy in cooking. For me, everyday in the kitchen is about learning, improving, and doing better than yesterday. Even when things get tough, I see it as a chance to grow. That’s what keeps me inspired to stay in this profession.
You’re known for your amazing Thai desserts — did anyone inspire these dishes?
My wife was the first person who introduced me to the heart of Thai cuisine, especially Thai desserts. Later, my mentor Chef Sunny encouraged me to explore this area further. One memorable moment was when he requested Thai layered cake (khanom chan), and with my wife’s guidance on the recipe, I worked hard to perfect it. That challenge became the beginning of my passion for Thai sweets. Thai desserts are not easy as they demand patience, precision, and a lot of care, but that’s also what makes them so rewarding.
What’s a dish you love to cook at home that’s different from what you prepare at the Club?
At home, I often cook Thai comfort food like spicy minced pork salad (larb moo), chicken curry noodles (khanom jeen nam ya kati), or a simple stir-fried basil. Whenever we visit my wife’s family in Thailand, her mother prepares big family-style meals like a huge bowl of larb, a big pot of curry noodles, and baskets of fresh vegetables. Watching her cook with such care has inspired me, and I’ve learned to notice the details and bring that feeling into my own cooking. For me, the best moment is when my wife tastes my food and smiles — that’s the greatest compliment I could ask for.
When you’re not in the kitchen, how do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time, I am either resting or exploring. I enjoy going out to taste different foods — from street food to new restaurants — because every dish has something to teach me. For me, it’s not only about enjoying a meal, but also about paying attention to the details, the flavours, and the creativity behind it. These experiences help me stay inspired and keep developing my own cooking.
What do you enjoy most about cooking for members at the British Club?
Cooking at the Club is exciting but challenging, because I must meet the expectations of many people with different tastes. Sometimes it’s stressful, but it also pushes me to improve. What I enjoy most is when members tell me they truly enjoyed a dish — those small compliments give me a lot of motivation.
When you guide members on recipes for little chefs, what advice would you give to aspiring young chefs?
I enjoy teaching kids because they bring so much energy and curiosity. My advice to them is to have fun in the kitchen, don’t be afraid to try new things, and remember that cooking is not just about recipes — it’s about sharing happiness through food!
With more exciting desserts in the pipeline for future Little Chefs, be sure to sign your kids up soon so they don’t miss out on the fun! Plus, the authentic Thai desserts featured in this article can be specially ordered — simply speak to Chef Ken in advance to enjoy these sweet treats.

Rooted in Action: Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future
By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025
We do not inherit this hilltop from our founders; we borrow it from our children. That truth makes climate action a Club value. Singapore shows what determined communities can achieve, ranking among the top globally for resilience, green finance, and smart cities. With over 40% of our island greened, from nature reserves to skyrise greenery, our children are truly growing up in a City in Nature.
The British Club is proud to be leading the way in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
The Club now runs on 100% green electricity, with new chillers cutting carbon and saving 52% in energy costs.
• SDG 2: Zero Waste
Chef Sunny’s team reduces waste through smart planning, storage, and sourcing from local eco farms.
• SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
From zero recycling a decade ago, the Club now runs 156 collections yearly, making green habits second nature.
• SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Textile and toy drives have saved tonnes from landfill, conserving resources and supporting a circular economy.
• SDG 14: Beating Single-Use Plastics
We eliminated single-use plastics on site, helping prevent ocean pollution that harms millions of seabirds and marine life yearly.
• SDG 13: Climate Action
We replace dead trees and add new saplings to restore Replacing and planting trees restores canopy, with each tree absorbing up to 22kg of CO2 annually as they grow.
As the Best Family Club 2025, The British Club helps turn national ambition into daily habits. Here are simple steps you can take today that may seem small but become powerful when multiplied across our community.
• Set thermostats to 25°C to save cooling energy.
• Buy local, eat seasonal. Visit a farm and show kids where food comes from.
• Shop smart with a short list, buy only what you need, and use first-in, first-out storage.
• Start composting. Even a small bin turns scraps into soil and cuts methane.
• Teach labels. Explain “use by” vs “best before” to stay safe and reduce waste.
• Make one low-carbon trip weekly by walking, carpooling, or using public transport.
Join us for a family planting day as we replace dead trees with healthy saplings that will grow alongside our children. It’s a joyful day outdoors with hands in the soil, tools and saplings provided, and plenty of stories to share. Each tree absorbs about 48 pounds of CO2 a year while giving back oxygen — a simple act with lasting impact.
RSVP with Member Services to book your spot, and don’t forget hats, water bottles, and your best “I grew this” smile. Together, let’s turn climate talk into climate practice.

I am a musician. I care about practicing and showing what I can do. I believe there are many ways to grow and improve.
“Seeing my sister play the violin inspired me, and when she passed her old violin down to me, I felt proud to be starting my own musical journey. At Dulwich College (Singapore), I learn in many ways. I go to my violin CCA before I go home, and I also have individual music lessons with my teacher here. I play in concerts, which is really exciting because it's not just about me. It feels like I'm part of something bigger, where everyone's contributions come together.”

A Memorable Start to the Wine Appreciation Section
by Prof. David Stringer, member of the Club since April, 1986
The inaugural event of the Wine Appreciation Section took place on Thursday, 18th September, at the Mountbatten Bar & Grill. Starting at 6:30pm and stretching past 11:00pm, it was clear no one wanted the night to end! This BYOB evening was centred on Bordeaux wines, and with 19 members attending and more than 19 bottles shared, it was an unforgettable introduction.
The event began with a classic aperitif of Kir, carefully balanced to avoid the overly sweet cassis often served. While Bourgogne Aligoté is the traditional base, its rarity in Singapore meant Sauvignon Blanc was used instead. The white wine flight included a refreshing Graves blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and a surprise discovery – Camille de Labrie Chardonnay from the Right Bank, offering a pleasant contrast to the great whites of Burgundy.
Attention then turned to the reds, beginning with six wines from the Right Bank. Highlights included a 2018 Clos Saint Vincent Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, paired with a Lalande Pomerol, and a Magnum of Château Simard, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. These Merlot-driven wines showcased the rich, velvety style Bordeaux lovers adore. Interestingly, while Lalande Pomerol lacks an official classification, it is home to some of the world’s most prestigious wines, including Petrus and Le Pin.
The Left Bank followed, where the wines truly impressed. A 2021 and 2022 Château Talbot, Saint-Julien, were paired with a 2016 GrandPuy-Lacoste, Pauillac, and a 2022 Château Giscours, Margaux. The evening’s stars, however, were the 2011 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and 2020 Château d’Armailhac, both Pauillac 2ème Grand Cru Classé – a pairing that left everyone speechless.
To complement the wines, Chef Sunny crafted an optional twocourse menu of salad and Tenderloin Steak with Foie Gras, alongside à la carte and vegetarian choices.
I may have forgotten a wine or two as is understandable after this amount of superb wine! I apologise for any accidental omissions.
All in all, it was an evening of two courses and 19 superb wines – a remarkable beginning for the Wine Appreciation Section, and one that promises many more memorable gatherings to come.

BARRACUDAS
Barracudas Make a Splash in 2025!
By Lisa Koh, Member of the Club since October, 2020 & Danya Fox Pemberton, Member of the Club since February, 2017
After a long summer, our Junior Barracudas finally returned to the pool, bursting with energy and ready for action across the White, Blue, and Red groups. True to Barracudas style, we hit the ground running with our August time trials, where every swimmer had the chance to test themselves and set the tone for the season ahead.
September brought our first big meet of the year at The Tanglin Club — and what a showing it was! With 28 enthusiastic Barracudas taking to the water, we came away with medals in 39 events, covering every age group from 7 through 14. It was a fantastic display of speed, teamwork, and determination — and, of course, it wouldn’t be a Barracudas event without plenty of big smiles and ice lollies to celebrate!
Barracudas swimming is never just about competition — it’s about fun, camaraderie, and building true team spirit. That’s why we’ve got some exciting events lined up, starting with our epic Movie Night on 24 October. More racing follows as we head into the final stretch of the year, with the highlight being the Annual British Club Swim Gala, where all members are warmly encouraged to join in for a fun-filled morning. Whether you’re chasing medals or simply keen to enjoy the water, it’s a brilliant chance to be part of the action.
And of course, no Barracudas season would be complete without our legendary End-of-Year Party & Awards Night, where we celebrate achievements and have a great time together!
The Barracudas welcome swimmers aged 7 and up, training across three progressive skill groups under the expert guidance of our amazing coaches, Julian and Pierre.
Curious to join or want to learn more? Get in touch with us at Barracudas@britishclub.org.sg — we’d love to have you on board. See you at the pool!
Super September and Beyond
By Robb Annan, Member of the Club since May, 2018
The Cricket Section wasted no time getting back into action after the summer break. September proved to be one of our busiest months of the year, with five matches squeezed into just four weeks. Availability was stretched to the limit, with players juggling family commitments and, in some cases, partner visas to ensure they could take the field. Cricket, as we all know, is a sport that demands not only hours of play but also hours of post-match celebration — and it’s no small feat to field the same XI across consecutive weekends!
On the pitch, results were mixed with two wins from five outings, but the spirit of the game remained as strong as ever. A particular highlight was playing our friends from HMS Prince of Wales again, where we enjoyed a spirited midweek rematch. The game went right down to the final over, but HMS had set just enough runs and deservedly took the win on this occasion.
The month’s finale was a classic encounter against SCC at Dempsey Oval. In a high-scoring affair, the BC XI posted an impressive 6/242 from 30 overs. SCC’s Saturday XI mounted a determined chase, taking it right down to the wire. With just 13 runs needed from seven balls and one wicket in hand, it was anyone’s game. Thankfully, our bowlers held their nerve, clinching the final wicket to seal a memorable win and set up a season-deciding showdown in November between our two great clubs.
The Next Generation
Looking beyond the immediate season, it was heartening to see the next generation making their mark. Three of our “young guns” joined the XI for a recent fixture, serving as a reminder of the importance of passing the baton and keeping the spirit of BC Cricket alive. If your older children are keen to experience some social cricket with the BC XI — or your younger ones would like to learn the game — we’d love to hear from you. BC Football Heats Up: Fresh Kit, Fierce Starts, and Vets on Fire!
By Paul Davies, Member of the Club since June, 1997
The British Club Football Section is buzzing this November! Not only are we showcasing a fantastic new kit, thanks to our generous sponsors, but both our Open Age and Vets teams are delivering exciting performances on the pitch.
A huge thank you goes to our sponsor, City Osteopathy & Physiotherapy, whose support allowed us to unveil a sleek new kit. The predominantly red strip, with its sharp detailing, has been a huge hit, giving the entire section a professional, unified look and an extra boost of confidence for the season ahead. We’re proud to represent the Club in such style.
Our Vets have had a vibrant start, winning three of their first four league games. They began with a strong 4–2 victory against BFA, followed by a clinical 3–1 win over Chong Hwa. A 3–1 loss to Hibs Vets served as a valuable learning curve, with the AI Coach stressing the need for stronger midfield control and sharper attacking play.
The highlight so far has been the “Dog Run Derby” against Exiles. On an uneven pitch that proved as much an opponent as the team itself, the Vets triumphed 4–2. Andy “Lineker” McKimmie was the star, netting a hat-trick in classic old-school fashion, while Tony Baldwin added a spectacular long-range lob over their towering 6’4” keeper. The match was cut short by a lightning storm, but not before the Vets secured a memorable victory.
Meanwhile, the Open Age team is navigating a season of transition. With management changes and players stepping up to support the Vets, the young squad has faced tough tests against seasoned sides such as SCC, TG Strollers, and GAS. Despite the challenges, they’ve shown great resilience and heart, creating promising chances and improving with each game. New players are settling quickly alongside the senior core, and performances are visibly on the rise.
The early promise shown by this talented group looks set to translate into their first win and, with it, a strong run for the rest of the season. The future of BC Football is looking bright.
Inspired by the action? Whether you’re keen on competitive football or just a casual game, we’d love to hear from you! Contact us at football@british.org.sg or speak with the SRC staff.
Back on Course: Golf Section Swings into Action
By Adam Bozeman, Member of the Club since January, 2023
Coming back from summer holidays, the Golf Section has had a busy September with our monthly fixture game at Keppel Club and a newly introduced nine-hole monthly game at Mandai Executive Golf Course. Our Monday and Wednesday night league teams have resumed play for the fall season at Orchid Country Club, earning some great prizes as they represent The British Club.
The Golf Section also hosted an enjoyable Ryder Cup viewing party at Scores and held our Annual General Meeting at Windsor Arms to select a new committee for the upcoming year. Thanks to the following members for stepping up into these important leadership roles: Keith Shaw (Treasurer), Chris Deakin (Secretary), and Scott Irvine (Social Events). We also extend our gratitude to outgoing committee leaders Chris Mitchell and Richard Holloway for their efforts and the time they devoted to British Club golf.
Looking ahead, the Golf Section has an exciting few months as we round out the year with some of our marquee events:
• In October, we will host the annual British Club Golf Championship at Tanah Merah Country Club.
• In late November, the Order of Merit tournament will be held in Malaysia or Indonesia (final dates and location TBD).
We look forward to an eventful fall season of golf fixtures and social gatherings. All Club members with an interest in golf are warmly invited to join the Section or reach out to the committee to learn more.
Padel Power at The British Club!
By Jamie Salamon, Member of the Club since September, 2010
The BC Padel Section continues to grow rapidly and is now the second-largest sports section. We have all developed our games, and several of our best players—who honed their skills on the courts of Singpadel and later worked on their rehydration skills in Al Capones (RIP)—have now gone on to even greater heights than dominating the BC Padel Socials!
As some of you may know, the Singapore National Padel Summer League has recently finished. This huge event was run over a few months across 12 different venues in Singapore. There were 16 categories divided into Open 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Women’s 1 and Women’s 2. Each group had 2–3 equal pools that battled it out over the season to secure a top four placement, which ensured a route to the finals. From there, it was a seeded knockout competition.
The number of players across all the divisions was close to 300, so the competition was fierce. Participants faced a wide variety of players, and the Division Finals were always keenly contested.
The Division 1 category involved the best players in Singapore, many of whom are tennis coaches turned padel players/coaches. As such, this league is not for the faint-hearted. The high-octane padel action meant that there were just two groups in Open 1, and Matt Rawbone proudly represented BC as one of the sole participants at this elite level.
Division 2 was highly competitive and featured several players from The British Club, including the eventual winners of National League 2, Martin Verga and Showbhik Kalra. Many congratulations to them! They will be promoted next season to Division 1—perhaps tempting Martin to stay in the country a bit longer!
The National League is great fun and well done to the many BC participants across the divisions.
If, however, you don’t wish to play in the National League, the BC Padel Section has you covered with Social Padel every Tuesday evening, and more competitive Rodeos on the last Tuesday evening of each month, both at Singpadel.
If you haven’t already, do come along and try padel to find out why it’s the fastest-growing sport on the planet!

Kicks, Belts, and Big Smiles at the TKD Annual Dinner
By Vicky Mackay, Member of the Club since May, 2018
Our Annual Section Dinner marked another year of progress and growth in the Taekwondo section. The TKD community came together for a delicious dinner at the Treetops Terrace. It was a lovely evening of celebration and recognition for all our students’ hard work, including our black belt recipients, Emma Malacchini and Zara Sharma, who have been practicing with the Club for 9 and 10 years, respectively.
We must also not forget a special mention to the parents, as their support is essential to the growth and success of The British Club TKD section. Thank you, indeed! And with the arrival of our new Taekwondo t-shirts, nobody left emptyhanded. Well done to all our students!

We’ve recently welcomed five new students to the TKD section — and there’s always room for more! Interested in learning Taekwondo? Reach out to us at taekwondo@britishclub.org.sg

PICKLEBALL INTERCLUB PICKLEBALL LEAGUE (ICPL)
By Fiona Hughes, Member of the Club since June, 2018
The BC Pickleball Section is proud to be participating in Singapore’s first-ever ICPL, which commenced in early September. The ICPL includes heavy hitters such as the Singapore Recreation Club, Chinese Swimming Club, and the Warren Golf & Country Club.
Led by fearless Captain “PJ” Enriquez, the section fields a team of advanced players each week to compete in men’s doubles (3 matches), mixed doubles (2 matches), and ladies’ doubles (1 match) on specific match days across various venues in Singapore.
The level of skill on display in this exciting, high-level competition has been outstanding. We are proud that the BC team—small but fierce —has shown resilience and performed competitively in these challenging matches, playing for the first time in front of large audiences at busy, often loud, indoor and outdoor venues.
Just as important has been the cheering, laughter, and bonding as the team winds down together at the end of the day with some well-earned refreshments and snacks for that all-important post-match debriefs! All in all, it has been another notable milestone in both the growth of individual players and our section.
Players are also putting in the hard work with extra practice at the Club on Friday nights. While all players have been fantastic, a special shout-out goes to our amazing “Power Puff Girls” (as the ladies in the section are affectionately nicknamed): Aneetha “Slicer” Vine and Konel “Striker” Sharma achieved great results in the ladies’ doubles, while powerhouse Marina Krishnan paired with Duncan Micallef to take a set in the mixed doubles. Strong combinations in the men’s doubles—Andrew Vine/Alan Chan, PJ Enriquez/Sanjeev Sharma, Duncan Micallef/Kieron Karthigasu, and Sanjeev Sharma/Calvin Chua—saw BC take some hard-won sets. A big thank-you to all players, supporters, and organisers as we continue playing in the ICPL until the end of November. On the horizon: the Lion City League! If you are interested in playing for the BC team, please contact Captain PJ Enriquez through the Sports Department.
BOOKING SYSTEM UPDATE – MORE COURT TIME AVAILABLE!
The Sports Department has updated the booking system to allow Club members to book Pickleball Courts 1 and 2 separately (at effectively half the cost of tennis court rates). Please contact the Sports Department for further information about bookings as well as pickleball bat and ball rentals.
Join the BC Pickleball Section for only $10 a month. Socials are held 6:00pm – 9:00pm on Sunday nights and 7:00pm – 9:00pm on Wednesday nights. All are welcome!
SWIMMING
Triumphs, Team Spirit, and Our Gili Adventure!
By Nathalie Farrow, Member of the Club since August, 2020
Hello to everyone in the British Club community! We’ve had a fantastic few weeks, and we’re thrilled to share the latest news. It’s been a busy time celebrating achievements, strengthening our squad’s spirit, and preparing for our biggest annual trip.
Podium Success & Strong Swims
We are pleased to congratulate Derek Murray and James Tyler on their excellent performances at the Bintan Triathlon. They represented the Club brilliantly, and we extend a special shout-out to Derek for earning a well-deserved place on the podium! Following their example, our swimmers are actively upping their mileage and focusing on the pool sessions that will build the endurance needed to reach those challenging 5km marks.
The Masters Squad Social Evening
The social side of our section is thriving! Our recent Masters Squad Social Evening was great fun — it followed a focused training session and turned into a relaxed curry feast afterwards. It was the perfect way to swap stories, recharge after hard work, and reinforce the strong bonds that make our squad so supportive.
Looking for a New Challenge? Join the Masters!
Inspired by the camaraderie and fun? We’d absolutely love to welcome new swimmers to the Masters squad! This group is ideal for any adult member looking for structured fitness, great technique work, and a supportive social atmosphere. We cater to all abilities, so if you’re ready to add a positive, engaging activity to your routine, please reach out. Contact swimming@britishclub.org.sg to enquire about what the Masters Swimming squad is all about.
The Annual Highlight: The Gili Challenge is On!
Now for the main event and the highlight of our annual calendar: the Gili Challenge, running from 7th to 10th November! This trip is the perfect blend of adventure and teamwork. We’re heading to the stunning Gili Islands near Lombok to swim around all three in the crystal-clear open water. It’s a rewarding, memorable team experience that showcases the best of what our Club is about. Whether you’re a long-distance veteran or just looking for a challenging goal to train towards, this trip is truly unforgettable. Training for Gili officially kicked off this week, and we encourage everyone to come down and join our distance sessions. Let’s make this year’s Gili Challenge the best one yet!
Serving Up Wins and Smiles: BC Squash in Full Swing!
By The Boaster, Member of the Club since April, 2007
The real heartbeat of BC Squash is, of course, our Social Squash scene. Brilliant in its simplicity: we have courts reserved on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6pm, and all afternoon on Saturdays from 2pm. All we need to do is show up to be guaranteed a great workout, the passion of a series of competitive but friendly games, and the camaraderie of après-squash in Scores Bar. What could be simpler or more enjoyable?
Behind the scenes, there is always someone dedicated to making things run smoothly — arranging courts, publicising news and developments, and overseeing the ladder.
Oliver Hopkins has been superb in this role over the past few years as our Social Squash head honcho, but with his departure from Singapore looming at the end of the year, he has already transitioned the role over to Alex Weeks and Kevin Wotherspoon, who will now jointly take over the reins. We owe Oliver a huge debt of gratitude for all his great work and are delighted to have Alex and Kev taking this on from here.
Not all our squash is social, of course. The 2025 Cosmo League is well underway with several changes this year. Matches are now four lines instead of five, and Serangoon Gardens CC are back in the league after a short hiatus, meaning two extra fixtures this season. Not everything has changed, though — Team BC are still fighting hard to ensure that squash is coming home (finally!) and are nicely placed in second midway through the season. A hot streak over the next few weeks could bring an end to our 20-year title drought (and leave young Hamish wondering what the fuss is all about).
Cosmo heroes so far have been captain James Buchanan (two wins from two, including an epic comeback from 0–2 down to win 3–2 and 12–10 in the last game), Alex Weeks and co-captain Rahul Ghosh (two from three), and Leo, David, and Kev, who have all played multiple matches.
In a portent of future success, we played a mid-October mega fixture (nicknamed The Ashes) against SCC — current Cosmo leaders — and won seven of 11 lines for a thumping victory. Stars of the day included Oliver Hopkins and Leo Poloniecki, who both won very, very close matches. Now James just needs to find space for the trophy at SCORES!
We recently welcomed Hamish Carpenter to BC Squash as our youngest associate member! Love and congratulations to Jen and Ben Carpenter -and to Grandad Keith!
