Stephanie Kountouros is a poly-queer femme who has been a Bellingham LGBTQ activist since 1996. She currently serves as LGBTQ liaison with the Community Advisory Board for the Bellingham Police Department, and on the Planning Committee for Bellingham Community Radio. She lives with her partner and her wife. É.F.K. O’Conghaile is a transgender organizer with particular focus on youth empowerment, transgender spaces, and homelessness. They are one of the Co-Directors of the Whatcom Queer Teen Shelter, a local nonprofit in the county.

November! Halloween is over and the 60 day march through the Holidays begin. I will also turn 61 on the 18th of this Month. My birthday falls on a Wednesday Night and there will be a drag show at Rumor’s Cabaret that night so guess who is going to be there! This has been an eventful year for the Clan. The birth of my youngest Grandchild in June and a heart attack in April. What a journey!

I hope you all have turned in your ballots! Local elections effect us much more than you might realize. When we are in the middle of a Primary Presidential campaign it is easy to overlook the local races. I have walked mine down to the court house as I do every year, this time it was a longer walk because I live in Kendall now instead of downtown Bellingham. Maybe just maybe we can learn from Canada they started and finished their federal election in 11 weeks, and that was the longest election cycle in modern Canadian history. Amazing what can be done when contributions to elections are severely restricted and big money is out of the equation. Congratulations to Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party as the form a majority government ending the 10 year rule of Conservative Steven Harper.

As we start this season of Holidays I am looking forward to Thanksgiving. I know we all enjoy the gatherings and the food. As I get older I am more aware how fragile life is.

Baking With Betty

I really enjoy a good Banana Bread. Although it is not the best thing for diabetics because of the high sugar in the banana, you can make allowances if you use almond flour and for me in this recipe I substituted Splenda in place of the honey. The recipe calls for ¼ cup of oil if you are using infused oil and the dosage is 1Tbs there are 4Tbs in ¼ cup of oil you may have to slice the bread accordingly or add extra oil based on your preference. The bread did not turn out as cakey as I would of liked but the taste was there. You might want to try doubling the baking powder. Here it is

Instructions Preheat the oven to 300 Spray a bread pan with cooking spray Mix the beaten eggs and vinegar together in a bowl Add the mashed bananas, infused oil, honey (or Splenda) and vanilla then stir until blended Sift almond flour, baking soda, cinamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl and then add to banana mixture Stir until well blended and pour batter into the bread pan.

Bake in the oven for 1 hr

Many people know of The Rocky Horror Picture Show! It has been screened around the world at least once a week for 40 years now! The campy spoof of B grade Sci Fi matinee flicks bombed at the box office when it was first released but took on a life of it's own as the audience began the now famous tradition of call backs during the showings. What started as a celluloid flop became a cult extravaganza that really has no rival even 40 years after it all began. What most people don't know however is that the movie was preceded by an equally amazing Stage Play. The Rocky horror Show was the brain child of Mr. Richard Obrien, it began at a small 60 seat theater in London and in 1973 won Best Musical in The London Evening Standard's annual poll of Drama Critics. Fast forward to the fall of 2006. According to Scott McDade, this years president of TAG At a board meeting of Skagit County's Theater Art's Guild, “Jane Skinner had proposed to direct Rocky horror. Some board members were enthusiastic. Others were scandalized by the very idea of producing a show that was so full of adult content....” In the end,the decision to do Rocky pretty much made itself; there was no way we could not do this show...” I was able to assist in the first run of Rocky those many years ago and have never forgotten the experience! I was and still am so very proud of the courage and talent of everyone involved in that ground breaking production in little downtown Mt. Vernon. I had the joy of attending opening night of this years Rocky Horror Show. I was literally moved to tears.

There were some very minor technical glitches and yet the cast and audience pulled it all together. Opening night was a celebration of joy worthy of Broadway! The high energy cast and musicians breathed life to the script just like Frankenfurter breathed life to Rocky. The audience call outs provided sparkle and zest, the burlesque prior to the start of the show and virgin pledge lead skillfully by the beautiful and talented Adiena set the mood, and Magic happened! The best part of this article is there is still time for you to take in The Rocky Horror Show! Join me Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 8pm November 5,6,and7th at the historic Lincoln Theater as we do the Time Warp Again!

Let's Do The Time Warp Again!

I am very excited to be able to share this new column with you! Together we are going to venture into the world of “adult' baking. Many folk like myself enjoy the euphoria of Weed but don't really want to smoke it. All of the recipes listed here can be made with ingredients readily available at your local recreational weed store. Please keep in mind when using any edible the effect of the high tends to take a good 20 minutes or more. Consume accordingly, always err on the side of caution.

When we are young it rarely crosses our minds that there will come a day when we are not here. As we age, and mature, (substitute in wrinkle and sag) that changes. Our feelings of invincibility vanish like so much November fog. I am a very fortunate man. My parents at 84 years young, are still around and in good health. Just between you and me they are a hard act to follow! Mom and Dad met in High school, fell in love, and have been in love ever since. I can honestly say I have never heard them argue. They were and continue to be incredibly supportive and fair. When the Endrizzi Clan gathers now, I find myself sitting back and observing how the younger members of the group interact with each other. I see how my Son Brandon cares for now 4 month old Maggie. (apologizing to her for loud shouting during a Seahawk game, so cute!) I watch as Starla interacts with 6 year old Ryan, and how Pixie interacts with the eldest granddaughter Taylor. My Nephew Tony travels 3 hours one way to get together with us and if he ever complains about the drive I never hear about it. I observe the genuine Love, caring and respect the next generation of my family exhibits to each other. (that includes dodging nerf gun bullets during last Christmas’s kids verses adult battle) I am so grateful that not only do they love each other but they like to be arround each other as well because from what I hear that is not all that common. When you get rid of all the fluff the only thing that matters, the only thing that survives, the only thing that lives on after, is the effect you have on the people that surround you and the effect that you allow those around you to have on you. The holidays and winter are upon us, Poppets. Here in my house, the holidays start with Samhain (Halloween) and run through New Year’s Eve, encompassing Thanksgiving, Yule, and Christmas. But winter lasts a lot longer – especially now that we’ve moved back to New England.

With the cold, celebratory season also comes favorite recipes. Winter, more than any other season, makes me want to fill the house with the scents and aromas of the season – not to mention my tummy with the tastes, too!

But there’s also that element of thanksgiving. Of closeness that comes with the holiday season. Of being especially grateful for the people I love most. So this year, let me share with you some of my favorite people’s favorite winter recipes. (And no, none of them have Betty’s favorite ingredient in them! I’ll leave those recipes to her…)

Dan’s Honey and Walnut Dip – The holidays can mean gatherings of friends, colleagues, coworkers. And we’re all busy – but you can’t show up empty handed. The best part is there is literally no measuring, no way to do it wrong. Like walnuts? Add more. Like honey? Add more. Whatever works for you. This is so fast, you can almost make it in your car in the parking lot before you head into the party if you need to.

1 block cream cheese, softened

Walnut pieces Honey Stir the walnuts into the cream cheese. Stir the honey into the walnut-cream cheese combo.

Serve with wheat crackers. Seriously, that’s it. But it tastes like you slaved all day.

Lori’s Hot Italian Beef – This is the best version of the classic sandwich I have ever eaten (and I’ve eaten far more of my share of Italian beefs). Plus, it’s so damn easy. Put it on in the morning and walk away. Hot, drippy, delicious dinner a few hours later.

What’s not to love?

1 rump roast

1 jar pepperoncini

Italian seasoning to taste

Beef broth to cover

6 or so cloves of garlic

Hoagie rolls Put everything but the rolls in a crockpot. Let it cook for at least 6 hours. Check to see if it’s falling apart yet. Cook longer if necessary, but no longer than a total of 8 hours.

Remove beef from crock pot, keeping juice in reserve. Shred the beef and fill rolls. Dip (but don’t soak) the sandwich in reserved juice.

Anna’s Gingerbread – This has become staple in David’s and my house. Just don’t use blackstrap molasses, because it makes it taste burnt instead of dark and rich. Yes, I know this to be true. Learn from my mistake, Poppets. Also, breaking this up and combining it with eggnog custard or pudding for a trifle is delicious!

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar

1 1/4 cups dark molasses

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 eggs, beaten

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

3 tablespoons warm milk

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup raisins (optional, I always leave out) Melt butter or margarine, sugar, and molasses in saucepan over low heat. Heat until sugar is dissolved and mix well. Remove from heat. Put flour, eggs, ginger, cinnamon, milk, baking soda, and raisins in mixing bowl. Add butter mixture and mix with spoon or electric mixer until well blended. Pour mixture into baking pan and bake in oven until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean (about 45 minutes). To serve, allow to cool to room temperature before cutting into squares.

In The Mix - continued Mac’s Winter Root Soup – Rich, thick, and perfect for a cold night. Makes use of winter root vegetables to their most delicious potential.

Sweet potato Carrots

Yukon gold potatoes (unpeeled)

Chicken broth Cut all veggies into cubes. Put in large roasting pan with 5-6 whole garlic cloves. Top with olive oil and sprinkle w salt, pepper, cayenne & ginger to taste. Roast uncovered on 425 for 45-60 min, until cooked through. Let it cool.

Once cool, put veggies in a blender in batches with 1/2 cup chicken broth each batch until smooth. Reheat, pour into in bowls, and top with favorite garnish (paprika, chopped nuts, whatever). Serve with crusty bread. Maybe even…

Sister and Brother’s Easy Bread – In case you didn’t figure it out, this is my sister and brother-in-law’s recipe. And yes, we call each other Sister, and sometimes Brother. Your kitchen will smell like your favorite bakery when you’re done with this.

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp yeast

1-1/2 c warm water Put everything in a large bowl. Stir it all around with a fork until it’s a gooey mess. Cover it in plastic and let sit 12 - 24 hours.

Flour a board or counter (liberally), and with wet hands, scoop the risen goo out onto the floured surface. Pull the edges in to the center and flip it over so you have a nice taut surface. Flour a towel and cover the dough, let it ‘nap’ for an hour or so.

Starbuck’s Gingerbread Muffins – Want to pretend that gingerbread is a breakfast food, and not cake? These are what you’re looking for. And the same warning against blackstrap molasses is in effect. Try them toasted or grilled with (plain, not Dan’s) cream cheese.

1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup softened butter 1 egg 1 cup unsulphured (not black strap) molasses 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup hot water 1/2 cup applesauce

Preheat oven to 350. Grease & flour muffin tins. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar & butter. Beat in the egg, and then mix in the molasses. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.

Blend the dry bowl into the creamed mixture, and add the applesauce. Stir in the hot water.

Pour into muffin tins.

Bake 15 minutes.

Susan’s Spiced Tea – This is my mother’s recipe. It is literally the taste and smell of my childhood. Generally, I distain instant drinks. This is the exception. Plus, it will keep FOREVER in an air-tight container.

2 cups Tang

2 scoops instant lemonade (if anybody can still find Wyler’s, it’s especially good)

My Dear David’s Apple Cider – Because no article about some of my favorite people in the world would be complete without my dear David. We went apple picking last month and used the freshest apples EVER this time. I want to say it doesn’t make a difference… but it does. Still, the apples you can get a grocery store make it taste damn good.

12 medium apples

2 cinnamon sticks

1 star anise

2 t ground cloves

Orange peel for zest Sugar Cut apples into 2 inch cubes (this can be approximate). Put in a large pot, just covered with water. Throw in cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and zest. Keep everything at a low boil for an hour or two, until it’s all liquid.

Let cool. Strain out solids with cheese cloth.

Add sugar to taste and reheat. Serve with a cinnamon stick (or rum!)

Put a covered oven-safe bowl into the oven and preheat to 450 for 30 minutes. Dump dough into hot pot, shake to distribute, cover, bake 27 minutes. Uncover and bake another 11 minutes. (These are random times, but they work!)

Remove and cool in the pot. Bread will just pop out when cool.

1 cup instant, unsweetened tea (caffeinated or decaf, optional)

1 teaspoon ground clove

1 heaping teaspoon cinnamon Combine all the ingredients. Add 2 T to a mug and pour in hot, not quite boiling, water.

Stir well.

November is the start of the dreaded Holiday Season. Everyone has just recovered from Halloween tricks and treats and now begins the 60 day mad dash through Thanksgiving and Christmas so we can finish the year and start the madness all over again. With all the entertaining that happens in these next 2 months, I thought it would be informative to bring to your attention the local distilleries in our area that craft amazing Spirits using local ingredients from local farms right here in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. First up is Chuckanut Bay Distillery. I visited the Distillery and was able to talk with one of the partners of the business Matt Howell. Matt's interest in brewing began with some time spent working in the wine industry. His dream of moving into the realm of hard alcohol production started to blossom in 2008 when friend and now partner Kelly Andrews said hey Matt I have this idea to start a distillery what do you think? Matt said “alright let's do it! And the Birthing of Chuckanut Bay Distillery began. By 2011 Chuckanut Bay Distillery was up and running.

Everything that goes into every product produced by Chuckanut Bay is sourced within 30 miles of the Distillery. All of the barley,corn and rye come from farms in Whatcom County, and the Potatoes are grown on a farm in Skagit County. Matt told me unlike many American Whiskeys that are more “heavily wooded” they wanted the fermentables we use to shine through Green Mans Dram: I tasted this when I visited the tasting room and liked it so much I walked out with a bottle! The acronym BDSM is actually an overlapping abbreviation of Bondage and Discipline (BM), Dominance and Submission (DS), and Sadism and Masochism (SM). One aspect that gets the least air time in public discussion about BDSM (at least in my observation) is discipline. This is, likely, due to the highly personal nature of developing and implementing disciplinary practices within consensual relationships. While choices surrounding discipline in BDSM are very much unique to each relationship, there are some things that can be discussed in a more universal way.

To begin with, we can define domestic discipline be determining what it is and what it is not. Domestic discipline is “the practice between two consenting life partners in which the head of the household (HoH) takes the necessary measures to achieve a healthy relationship dynamic; the necessary measure to create a healthy home environment and the necessary measures to protect all members of the family from dangerous or detrimental outcomes by punishing the contributing, and thus unwanted, behaviors for the greater good of the family.”

Domestic discipline is often associated with Christian Domestic Discipline. However, within that construct, the male is the Head of Household based on Biblical teaching and the wife/female is the submissive partner. Research into Christian Domestic Discipline has shown that the female partners often feel afraid and/or trapped which brings the ability to give legitimate consent into question. Within the arena of BDSM and power exchange relationships, discipline can be a negotiated consequence that is agreed upon by both/all partners and consented to either for a single instance or for the term of a contract between the partners. Just as there can be negotiated hard limits for play, there can be negotiated hard limits for punishment or discipline.

We can also examine general psychological impacts of discipline. While physical discipline can be a useful tool for some, positive reinforcement has been shown to have greater and more lasting results in behavior modification training. Motivation, supporting successes, authentic praise, and acts of appreciation can often increase wanted/acceptable behaviors to a much greater degree and with more consistency than discipline, punishment, or other negative reinforcements (or positive punishments like spanking) can minimize unwanted/ unacceptable behaviors.

If discipline is to be used in a consensual and negotiated manner, determining the type of discipline that will be effective can be challenging. Finding what works (and identifying what doesn’t) is an opportunity for all involved parties to practice ongoing negotiation and self-advocacy. For some submissives, pain is not a punishment. Masochistic submissives who have agreed to or asked for punishment in order to modify behaviors may not feel that a spanking or flogging is, in fact, a punishment.

For many submissives, not just masochists, emotional discipline is far more effective. The idea of silent treatment, loss of date or play time, removal of a collar for a short period of time, writing an apology to their dominant partner, or being relieved of their duties for a short period can be incredibly impactful. The most intense punishment I have heard of was a submissive who had to write her dominant’s name on the bottom of her foot and “step on his name” until it wore off. For many, just the thought of this would be a punishment.

Again, while this type of punishment may be effective, research shows that positive reinforcement is more consistently effective over time.

We can also discuss how discipline should be delivered in order to have the greatest impact on behavior. If punishment is to be used, it should be implemented as soon after a transgression as possible and it should be explicitly stated that the action being taken is a punishment for the given offense, why the behavior being punished is unacceptable, and that the punishment is being carried out with the growth of the submissive and the benefit of the relationship in mind. The submissive should then restate what they have been told to ensure that they have heard and understand why they are being punished. Punishment or discipline should not be delivered from a place of anger, hurt, or other strong negative emotion.

Discipline, whether punishment or reward, should be as consistent as possible for long-term results. Because of the needs for consistency and timely action, the person in charge of providing discipline is taking on a large commitment to support their partner(s).

If you choose to implement domestic discipline in your relationship(s), take the time to find out what works and what doesn’t. Discipline procedures will be entirely your own, but keep in mind these main points as you craft your domestic discipline protocols:

How the Cannabis industry has evolved in Bellingham Has the gold… ahhhem… “green” rush died off or are we still selling to lines of eager bud buyers?

It’s been over a year since the first pot shop opened its doors to a throng of customers.

Each, waiting and counting the minutes for their chance to buy legal weed! Whatcom County now boasts a total of 10 open Recreational Stores, and 32 producer/processors licenses, compared to Seattle who has 40 producer/processors and 38 retail shops, as listed on 502data.com, a website that tracks sales, tax, and violations of each license in the state.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing however; many new rules and regulations have been adjusted and restructured creating new challenges for retailers, growers, and edible makers.

“It’s totally the wild west… especially for the edible folks,” says Bob Ridgely, co-owner of Crescendo a cannabis infused edibles company. “Packaging and all sorts of things changing… tax structure. As a wholesaler we weren’t treated as such. Once that burden lifted, it’s now about getting it in the store at a reasonable price.”

Originally taxes were due at each step of the process. Producers were charged a twenty-five percent tax, then processors, then retailers. By the time the product reached customers, seventy-five percent of the money made went to the IRS coffers. In July 2015, the revenue structure got a reboot. Now, only thirty-seven percent is paid towards taxes, and is considered a sales tax instead of an excise tax, and retailers are the only ones liable for the debt.

The change in structure hasn’t slowed the income for the state.

In just one year, according to the Washington State Liquor & Cannabis Board’s (a name that has changed with the times) website, sixty-four million dollars was collected in tax revenue throughout the state for the 2014 fiscal year. Sure to exceed that record, 2015 is already at forty-seven million, with eight more months of the fiscal year to go. Whatcom County has raised over a million of this year’s tax dollars according to 502data.com.

Still, a chance to be in a new and developing industry is the draw for many seeking to make their fortune off legal weed.

“All our life it’s been illegal… This is our chance to be involved… and publicly share something we believe in,” says Ridgely.

Others see this as an opportunity to aid to their own passions and pursuits and the world of science.

“I have interest in cannabis and other plants,” says Justin West, owner of Cascade Herb Company who also holds two masters degrees in botany out of the University of California: Berkeley.

“This can create funding for other types of research in in sustainability.”

There are roughly eighty cannabinoids in the marijuana plant, according to west and only 2-3 of them are being researched and explored. Most notably, THC, the active psychoactive ingredient which produce the “stoned” effect. And CBD a chemical compound which is being researched and produced for it medicinal benefits. Further delving into the other cannabinoids drives West, and is a large part of why he is part of the industry.

The future looks bright, and even with more rules being added, this may not be so bad according to some.

“I think the explosion of product diversity has been astounding, I expect that trend to continue,” says West.

“All the things we hate, (speaking of the, at times, stringent rules on packaging, advertisement, testing and more),” says Ridgely. “It makes it better. The quality for the consumer will be better.”

An early maker of illicit gay films in the U.S., Otis Wade (1935-1995), lived on the outskirts of Hollywood and had a darkroom installed in his bungalow. Fans of his home movies included George Cukor, Bob Mizer, Alfred Kinsey and, more recently, gay academician Tom Waugh in HARD TO IMAGINE (see last month). Like Richard Dyer before him, Waugh’s early books refer to Wade as “AT”--before Wade allowed Waugh to use his name.

Waugh also accessed Wade’s six extant films at the Kinsey Institute. Thousands of gay and straight visual materials were claimed as ‘scientific’ material at the end of the U.S. Post Office trial against Kinsey in 1957. The Kinsey Institure also made its own films; Waugh claims Allan Ginsberg, at the end of his filmed solo ‘demonstration,’ “toasted the camera and flashed a peace sign.”

The Kinsey Institute holds much of the remaining gay visual past of the U.S. It cannot otherwise easily be reconstructed, as many makers and consumers were arrested in the 1960s in separate trials. Some were exonerated, blackmailed into testifying against those imprisoned (and one died) before the Supreme Court decided in 1962 that such materials sent via mail were legal. Newton Arvin (1900-1963), a National Book Award winner for his biography HERMAN MELVILLE (1950), a professor at Smith College, and only a consumer, lost his post, attempted suicide, and died in depression. Leslie Fiedler had already outed Melville in his essay “An End to Innocence” in the PARTISAN REVIEW (6/48), as well as Huckleberry Finn and Jim, and James Fenimore Cooper.

Ironically, while the accused destroyed much evidence fearing prosecution, much ended up with Kinsey--ironic because full-frontal nudity was about to open in mainstream movie palaces. Legal from 1962, West Coast Colt, Rocco and Fontaine well-tanned behind, white buns popped all over Fire Island, New York. Jerry Douglas’ THE BACK ROW (1970) shed seed for Jack Deveau’s A NIGHT AT THE ADONIS (1978), both featuring clips from earlier explicit gay New York films.

So Wakefield Poole’s BOYS IN THE SAND wasn’t the first tumescent feature; Burger (see next month) lists four others. Poole decided to make SAND while watching a violent HIGHWAY HUSTLER (untraceable) and Poole’s star Casey Donovan had already taken his screen-name from the hardcore, anonymous CASEY (1970). But SAND was the first commercial tumescent with taste, three sunlit fantasies, the first not to exploit its audience through fear and self-loathing. Poole’s second film, the ambitious, ambiguous BIJOU (1972) bombed but was surreal enough for Andy Warhol to comment, “After Wakefield Poole’s movies, mine are unnecessary and a little naive, don’t you think?” Poole’s third, a ‘straight’ R-rated BIBLE (1973), ended his attempts at art films in the manner of SCORPIO RISING (1963) and Jim Bidgood’s PINK NARCISSUS (1965-1971).

The first half of DIRTY POOLE reads like a celebritiy biography, but Wakefield quickly learned that the gay stigma remained despite legalization. Despite his art gallery lightshows, and aquaintance with Warhol, Poole’s career in legitimate theatre and TV was over.

Rejected by his family in Florida, he turned to cocaine, selling his works of modern art (Warhol, Rusch, Stella, Christo, Lichtenstein) amost one a month. Moving to Los Angeles and then San Francisco, his second career ended in porn, mob threats, homophobia, crooked lawyers, friends’ alcoholism, greedy widows of straight partners, freebasing, poverty and finally friends dying of AIDS. “Oh, I forgot one thing: I was still a drug addict.”

The second half of Poole’s autobiography is a cautionary tale--but it’s difficult to know exactly what it’s cautionary about. Many earlier explicit filmmakers had been imprisoned, and some consumers entrapped. Star of four Poole films, Wilhelmina model Casey Donovan lost his Arrow shirt and I. Magnin ads, and his non-exclusive relationship with Tom Tryon when Rona Barrett gossiped in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: “What male porn star is honeymooning on Long Island with an actor (THE CARDINAL) turned writer (CROWNED HEADS)?” at Edward Albee’s summer home, before Casey died of AIDS. The life of 1970s porn star Marc Stevens ended in AIDS, while Jack Wrangler married Margaret Whiting (see bibliography). Later, stars Jon Vincent and Joey Stefano o’deed and star-writer-director Al Parker died of AIDS. Another pioneer director, Fred Halsted, committed suicide after his lover died of AIDS. Poole, now a clean, celibate chef, remembers standing behind the principal dancer in the blue backlight in ‘Swan Lake,’ in Dana Goldfish and Dan Geller’s nostalgic BALLET RUSSES DE MONTE CARLO (2005), and sheds a tear for his life. Just as I shed one,

watching that documentary, when I read Poole’s final credit : Wakefield Poole became a dance captain on Broadway and a film director.

The Moon is a member of the Major Arcana family and has a great deal to say about the real question at hand. Often what seems to be the obvious issue is just a symptom of something deeper which needs to be resolved.

I find that the use of The Tarot is much less about finding answers to lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s question and more about redirecting our perceptions and assisting us in redefining our questions. The finality of receiving an answer will often discourage further investigation and can shut down creativity while a shift in perception can help us to refocus on the real issues and goals so that we remain open to new possibilities.

Traditionally The Moon is thought to represent obscured vision, not seeing the issue clearly, but when one looks closely at the effects of moonlight it can change our appreciation for this card. If you look out your window in the daylight you can clearly see all the major components of your landscape, but the abundance of light may keep you from noticing some of the more minute details. So it is with moonlight, the scene will look quite different in the reduced light and shadows will appear where none existed before, but once acclimated to the lower light level you begin to notice new details in those shadows. Appreciate the Moon for it may lead you to answers you may have overlooked in the bright light of day, your best directions may lie in the shadows.

When I see The Moon appear in a reading I immediately think that the querent needs to spend sometime getting to know their own environment more intimately. They need to take the time to see how their life and situation looks in the shadows and moods of moonlight. We are often so used to all the stimuli around us, the activity and sounds that are part of our modern world that we fail to take time to be alone in silence and darkness to look into our own shadows. Very often the noise of modern life completely overwhelms the softer sounds of our intuition and the guidance coming to us from the higher self. The Moon encourages us to slip away from the turmoil and allow our minds the peace and quiet necessary for true introspection.
