With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University. His main interest is Indian cinema and articles on it are forthcoming.

As I said the mid term elections are over, but they are still counting votes. We probably won’t know the outcome of many races until November 20th or so, and that is if there are no recounts. That’s ok

we have until January to figure it all out so what’s the rush right? Besides voters seem to be in a no tax mood, and it takes money to pay overtime for people to count ballots. Money that is getting harder to come by, and thanks to the wisdom of the electorate, it is going to be just that much harder for your elected representative to raise the revenue needed to do foolish things like bridge and road repair and pay for the ferry service. The world will not end of course, the bridges will get a little more rickety and the roads a bit bumpier, but hey who needs roads and bridges. Life goes on just at a bit slower pace as to not ruin the cars suspension.

Have a great month I know I will, I have a bicycle to ride! By the way the forward thinking citizens of Bellingham passed their prop 1 to pay for our city infrastructure up keep and restoration of Sunday bus service. So if you can make it into town the roads will be just fine thanks.

Yea November is here! This is my birthday month. Yes kids, I will turn 56 on the 18th! It seems like yesterday I was 55. Anyway, what a month already the elections are over and now we can all settle down to a good Thanksgiving.

not that will explain why you have been an hour early to everything. I really do not understand why we all still go through this ritual. Originally this “fooling mother nature” thing had something to do with the war effort during World War One. The act of Congress establishing the switch in time was enacted in 1918, That act was repealed in 1919 and then daylight saving time became a local option. During World War Two president Roosevelt instituted nation wide daylight saving time from February 9th 1942 to September 30th 1945 he called it “War time” On January 4th 1974 president Nixon re-instituted national daylight saving time as a fuel conservation plan Any state can still opt out of observing daylight saving time. It is all so very murky and confusing.

I just know Washington State observes the time switch and I got to sleep in an hour longer the fist Sunday of this month. I think politicians just like to feel powerful. Check out our cover this month, where we recreated the first changing of the senate clock for Daylight Savings Time (1918, pictured below).

Without warning the other day, an overwhelming sense of dread washed over me. It wasn’t because G*d’s gracious gift to the Northwest was right on cue, or as most “Hamsters” call it, Seasonal Affective Disorder. And it wasn’t because of KVOS’ imminent predictions of the forthcoming El Nino-effect; it was because something less sinister had suddenly lit up my ubiquitously boring, 42” plasma screen. There before me, in full-720p HDTV, wasn’t the tenderly-played out Grandfather/Granddaughter (Heidi) moment I was watching on TBS, but a sagacity of soothing that seemed to sucker-punch me back to November 1st–back when the world seemed shiny and new; when Democrats roamed the earth. Now normally, I would have felt emboldened by the words of wisdom Grandpa was imparting; but, today, the day after the election, I was in a crummy mood (and rightly so). To me, it felt like I was watching an entirely different scenario unfold, parallel to the actual plot. “Life ain’t fair,” Pappy put it to sweet little Suzy, “but you can be.” The audience cooed, and I lost it.

In my version, Grandpa suddenly lurched forward, clutched his chest and writhed in pain—calling out to nine-year-old Suzy for help. Without hesitation, she rushed over— empathy (and fear) pouring from her eyes.

Instinctively, she leaned over Grandpa, poised to help. She drew a deep breath and calmly gazed into the eyes of her fallen caretaker. Yet inside, she was horribly panicked. Suzy had never known real fear like this (much like that of 48.16% of all Americans on November 3rd).

Sensing a wave of exasperation dashing against her, she scrambled into action. She ran around the room, as if looking for something, anything.

Unfortunately for our tiny tot, the year was 2011 and statewide funding had already been cut at the elementary school where she attended. Suzy had never been taught how to resuscitate good ‘ole Pop! There was never any Annie to guide her. CPR didn’t exist. “Damn Candy & Soda Tax,” she muttered underneath her breath… if only she had been old enough to vote against Proposition 1107, to proselytize to the rest of her entrenched county, then maybe, just maybe her

school could have justifiably afforded the health education she so desperately required to revive her un-sweetened Pop (how apropos).

She ran to the kitchen and grabbed the phone. Cradling the receiver to her ear, she dialed the neighbors, begging them for a lift to the emergency room. The town? One in Unincorporated Whatcom County. Foiled again. Like good Christians, Bob and Lily (their neighbors), couldn’t be bothered with a dearly departing old Democrat like Pappy. In fact, in bluer-days, they had actually witnessed him volunteering at the local mission, handing out food subsidies to the poor and downtrodden like they were candy. “Why can’t those deadbeats just go and work for small business?” Bob would chide to Granddad over their un-mended, but shared white-picket fence. Granddad had tried, in vain–for eons–to explain how circumstance, disability, education, mental health and substance abuse (to name a few) were the underpinnings of poverty, and that it was the responsibility of those with means to help those in need—the marginalized and disenfranchised through taxes. But they wouldn’t listen. Lily was cold. Bob was calculating. “Call your precious 9-1-1,” Bob nonchalantly commented to Suzy, “Dancing with the Stars is on. I can’t be bothered with former Blue-county inefficiencies.” And with that he hung up. Suzy cringed at the thought of their Red-housed hypocrisy; she couldn’t give up!

Again she dialed, believing (inside) that the barbicans of bipartisanship would rule the day.

“9-1-1, please hold.” Please hold?! Oh, that’s right, she though to herself. Emergency services had been severely restricted since there were no new taxes. She didn’t have the time for this nonsense. Gently, she lifted him onto his side and reached into his wallet, desperately searching for a leathery, Blue-card. Or as Washingtonians

once called it: Basic Health. In what seemed like eternity, at long last, a voice rang back, “9-1-1 Operator. State your emergency.” “Pop is having a heart attack. Come quick!” she struggled to say. “Is this his first?” the operator coolly quipped. “His first what?” Suzy shot back. “... heart attack. There’s a 9-month pre-existing clause before any kind of treatment can begin.

Call an urgent care.” The line went dead. “What had befallen Obama-care?” she posited.

Suzy, like everyone else on November 3rd was screwed. Like a cookie crumbling (unleavened and un-levied), Pop’s lifeline fell silent the millisecond the redder-half swept its way back into Congress. Don’t paraphrase me, but I like Tea-Bagging it just as much as the next guy— but, plainly stated, in the bedroom, where it belongs, not on the annals of Fox-News... or as Tea-Party Members in Congress—let alone

within my own State Legislature. But Redderways would rule the day.

Ya know, I believed in a town (in a state) that protested wars; protested hubris, inequality and inequity. Yet our voices were split, or even worse... silent on Election Day. On paper, the State Income Tax Initiative (Initiative 1098) was defeated; within stomachs the Candy Tax was digested. And only by sporting blinders was Tim Eyman’s 2/3’s Majority (Initiative 1053) passed—a principle which requires a 2/3’s vote from the Legislature to raise new taxes, or conversely close loop-holes (highly unlikely). So taxes are off the table; so, too, are (potentially) many of our most precious state-sponsored programs. This at a time when the state budget is billions of dollars in the hole. Simply put, it’s going take a legislative leap of faith for Governor Christine Gregoire and the State House to come

to consensus in the coming days, months and years to balance our way out of a $2.6 Billion dollar deficit. “It’s not one item,” she decried on Election Night, “it’s what programs are gone.

And anything that’s a state funded program, things like the Basic Health plan are on the chopping block. I don’t have a choice.”

We have no one to blame but ourselves for the souring society we may yet to live in; and speaking for myself, as a five-county HIV/AIDS Prevention Administrator at Evergreen AIDS Foundation (primarily funded by state monies), it’s going to be a sad day for those most atrisk for HIV/AIDS throughout the larger Gay Community as widening cuts force certain prevention activities to a close. As a good friend of mine flatly stated, “If you have two things in life: one dollar and one vote. Use ‘em both before it’s too late.”⁂

It’s November and Thanksgiving again, Poppets. The article in my head was about all the things for which to be thankful and then segue into the pain the families of the teens who have recently committed suicide and how they must be struggling to find a reason to be thankful this season. That would then lead into telling you about the suicide prevention sites that have either sprung up or gained more exposure as a result and urge you to support them, as a way of supporting our teens, so that no family ever has to struggle to find reasons to be thankful at Thanksgiving. It was great in my head.

The newest and, honestly my favorite, is called the We Got Your Back Project (www. wegotyourbackproject.wordpress.com). Love this project. Their mission spells out a commitment to inclusivity that many other projects may claim to have, but miss in subtle – or often glaring – ways. They acknowledge that the LGBT community actually, you know, includes Bs and Ts and not everyone is white and middle class.

Daring, I know. They are new, so still just getting started. Still, the potential here is endless.

It sucked as I tried to write it.

Possibly the best known program is The Matthew Shepard Foundation (www. matthewshepard.org), created by the parents of Matthew Shepard following his murder in a hate crime driven by his orientation. Their online community and resource center is Matthew’s Place. It gives teens a place to gather, talk, meet…from wherever they are.

Seriously. What sounded eloquent in my head is coming off as trite, patronizing, and condescending as I tried to get it on paper. You deserve better than that. These families deserve better than that. Those kids sure as hell deserve better than that.

Because one more empty article written for the sake of pulling on heartstrings is the last thing that needs to be written right now. But these programs, these are real, these are anything but empty. So check these out; find the one you can support; and find a way to support it.

The Trevor Project (http://www.thetrevorproject.org) offers videos, articles and information for teens struggling with coming out or being out. They also offer a 24-hour/7-day a week telephone hotline (866-488-7386) for suicidal teens. They have trevorspace.org, as well, which is a social networking site for young people ages 13-24.

All three of these sites offer suggestions for straight allies, as well. They also give suggestions on what to do if a suicidal teen comes to you for help.

Vital reading for all of us.

Finally, there is the It Gets Better Project (http://www.youtube.com/ itgetsbetterproject). A You Tube page devoted to videos from older members of the LGBT community. The ones who remember what it was like to be a Queer child and teen. Videos that speak directly to today’s teens, assuring them that It Gets Better.

It’s Thanksgiving time. I promise you, there’s reason to be thankful.

Now I know it was halloween and you all are expecting an entertainment article about “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” or the Wild Buffalo’s halloween party with Acorn Project, but I don’t feel like it! I want to talk to you about an event that really hits home, the Congo Week Benefit party.

If you are unfamiliar with what is happening in the Congo right now I will give you a very brief synopsis. Currently the Congo the largest provider of three major minerals used in all electronic devices. Sounds good right? The only problem is that there is no structured government in the Congo. Currently militia forces from Rwanda and Uganda are currently occupying these areas enslaving the locals and keeping all the profits of their mines.

Next up was Sweet Medicine and let me tell you I have had the pleasure of hearing them in the past and they are always ready to please. This was the first time for their new bass player, so there was an element of surprise to their performance. The sound system that was pumping out their tunes was magnificent as well. It featured four large subwoofers, two mid and high speakers, and an amprack weighing in at over two hundred and sixty pounds! The sound was very crisp giving the vocalists David Zhang and Mother Aryeh the opportunity to be heard and really shine! This was another successful showing for Sweet Medicine, and if you haven’t seen them you need to.

The event that occurred on October 21st 2010 was to raise money and awareness for Congo relief. It was held at Fairhaven college in WWU. The night consisted of music and speakers raising awareness about this harsh ordeal. The main performers of this event were The Barefoot Brothers, Sweet Medicine, and Dubble Penetration.

The last main performance was Dubble Penetration. If you don’t know these guys all I can say is holy womp my friends! Deep dirty basslines and beautifully mixed beats.

The entire theater was shaking for this one. A good way to catch DP is to head on down to Rumors Cabaret every fourth sunday of the month. Their next performance there is on November 28th and it is free of charge just bring yourself and your yearning for bass intensive music!

The Barefoot Brothers displayed some of the finest in rock and reggae tones. These three fellas went through song after song displaying fine talent. After a few tracks they even began switching instruments to further display their talents. Who would’ve thought that a drummer could rip the head off an electric guitar with massive rock solos! I was very impressed.

Overall it was a decent representation for the Congo Relief. One thing I might change personally is the amount of promotion and the venue. Although is was a beautiful space, the event being in the college limited the hosts from charging for entry which would have brought their overall funds raised up quite considerably.

Hopefully next year they can band together with another believer and make this a seriously huge benefit! Till next time...⁂

WWU Students Travel to Protest WBC

Nick Milhoan, The Betty Pages, Photos by Michael Medina There is nothing like a group of radical extremists preaching hatred to bring people together from all backgrounds and every corner of the state.

Thousands of people from across Washington and Northern Idaho were in Spokane and Coeur d Alene ID., to counter protest and advocate for inclusion, peace and overall acceptance in the face of hate speech being preached by Westboro Baptist Church, the Topeka, Kan., group that has gained notoriety in the last 10 years for its protests of soldiers funerals, during their recent visit.

About 600 people, including 4 Western students, met seven Westboro members picketing at an entrance to Gonzaga University during the first stop of the day. While the message was vastly different on both sides, it was a loud and respectful demonstration of free speech.

After about an hour at Gonzaga, Westboro packed up and headed to Mood Bible Institute in central Spokane. A crowd of roughly 300 people tried to drown out the Westboro message.

“I’m glad they show up,” Simon Jones, a Spokane resident said. “Their hatred brings attention to

Jones was referring to the recent reports of 10+ suicides amongst Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer youth. He stood at all the protests dressed as Elvis with a sign that said “Please Drink the Kool-Aid;” referencing the March 1997 mass suicide involving the Heaven’s Gate Cult in which 39 people drank Kool-Aid laced with cyanide.

According to the Westboro website “godhatesfags.com,” they chose Spokane and Coeur d Alene because of recent Gay Straight Alliances that were started in area high schools and North Idaho College’s decision to present the “The Laramie Project,” a play that deals with the aftermath of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student murdered in 1998.

While messages were left both via phone and e-mail for Westboro and the Phelps family, they did not return a comment.

All seven members of Westboro are relatives of Fred Phelps, an independent Baptist minster who founded the church in 1991.

Westboro also protested at Whitworth University, Ferris High School, Eastern Washington University and Chavurat HaMashiach, a Messianic Jewish Synagogue.

Whitworth University the crowds mingled because Spokane County rules don’t prohibit protesters from occupying the same corner, where as in Spokane and Cheney where the other protests took place, they are not allowed to.

During the Whitworth protest community members like Jones, who were asking the Phelps family to “Drink the Kool-Aid,” were on the same corner and offered cups of the non-lethal drink to the family, they declined the drink.

“It’s important that communities stand together,” Taylor Malone, 21, an Eastern Washington University student, who helped organize the counter protests, said. “We don’t agree with the message and we don’t hate our residents.”

At each stop members of the “Traveling Pride Festival,” comprised of the Peace and Action Justice League of Spokane and the Inland Northwest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center, were on hand to greet the Phelps family, while gathering money for the two groups and have people sign a large card with positive messages thanking Westboro for coming to the Northwest, which would eventually be sent to the church.

Shirley Phelps Roper, who was the leader of the protest in Spokane, recently defended her family and their actions in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, but they have yet to rule on this matter.

“I feel like WBC did a great favor,” Micheal Medina, 21, a Western Junior said. “They helped unite like minded people who believe in hope, love and understanding.”⁂

Clint McCance, the vice president of the Midland School District in Arkansas, commenting on his Facebook page about the nationwide movement for people to wear purple in commemoration of the spate of gay youth suicides over the past few months wrote that he wanted gay people to commit suicide:

Trans Community?

One of the challenges for the transgender community is that once people successfully deal with their issues of gender identity and expression, they often leave it. After all, they worked hard to be happy with themselves and comfortable with their lives; to be regular, boring people who are non-descript parts of the fabric of the broader local community. Dealing with gender support groups such as the Washington Gender Alliance (www.WashingtonGenderAlliance.com) serves to remind them that there had been a time when they weren’t happy, boring people and weren’t their true selves.

And who can blame them? The goal of transition is to eliminate gender dysphoria and allow people to live and work the way they want to be seen.

Once that happens, the standard fare found at support meetings is superfluous. You already know how you identify and what to do about it, and have the information about medical and psychological therapies, and know how legal documentation is changed. So who needs to hear that stuff?

The problem is that without hearing the stories of those who have come before us, and seeing the examples of people who have been through it and successfully navigated the long journey, the only people at these meetings would be the ones with pain and questions; and no one with joy and solutions. What a drag that would be.

Aside from it being a disservice to our community, and a failure to “pay it forward” from the people who were there for us, it deprives them of

the chance to share their triumphs with those who would appreciate them most. There’s a special reward to mentoring someone who flourishes over time and has been inspired by your story.

There are people who find that the friendship and camaraderie forged in support meetings make their continued attendance after they’ve completed their journey worthwhile even though they aren’t in need of the services provided. And being a role model isn’t too shabby, either.

Unlike the more established gay and lesbian community, people who are gender variant don’t have the same institutions and infrastructure. Support and educational groups are essential in helping people deal with identity and expression. But they aren’t designed to fill other needs. So if you’re transgender and want to stay in the community, there are virtually no other options.

This isn’t to say that we don’t have some wonderfully trans inclusive GLBT organizations.

But if you want to be in a genderqueer chorus, on a transsexual softball team, or participate in a transgender business association, 2010 is not your year. Which brings us back to the disappearing trans community.

Being out and proud nourishes all of these different GLBT organizations. But many in the trans community work to become invisible.

That means leaving our community behind at the earliest opportunity. There can be no education, no passing of the torch, and in fact no community, itself, if there is no continuity.

If you’re a successful, gainfully employed, post transition trans person with a family and little free time, would you spend it attending a gender support meeting?

But need one choose? Not necessarily. Some of us successfully juggle elements of going about our daily lives and community activity. We find it unnecessary to announce to the clerk at the grocery store that we are trans, but happily attend meetings, or attempt to mentor the next influx of trans-folk.

So welcome home, old-timer trans-folk! Come and share with us your wonderful lives. Many of us are still in the dark of night, lost and searching blindly, and yours is a light to share. ⁂

Look at it this Way, At Least they didn’t have Baseball Bats Betty Desire, The Betty Pages Sunday morning October 14th around 2:30 am Bille had returned to his apartment after a night out and was walking his dog before retiring for the evening. As he was waiting for his Pug to do his business he saw four men in their 20’s approaching. He turned around and headed back to his apartment when one of the men asked if he had a cigarette. He told the man “no I am sorry I don’t” The man became belligerent calling him ass- hole and saying “oh you probably do” basically harassing him at first then he got mad because Bille wasn’t looking at him when he was talking to him. Bille said “I’m just trying to walk my dog, that’s all I’m doing.

The next thing Bille knew he was being pushed from behind he fell and scrapped his knee and his forehead as he heard the man say “I told you faggot when someone’s talking you should look at them.” The Betty Pages followed up with a few questions for Bille: Betty: Bille did you think of this as a hate crime?

Betty: this is about safety too.

Bille Yea. Betty: Did you recognize these people at all?

Bille: I didn’t recognize them they were probably in their mid 20s, I do not think they were college kids, they were about my size or bigger, the one that pushed me was Hispanic looking but it was dark and 230 in the morning Betty: did you call the police right away?

Bille: As soon as I got up I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and called 911. The dog was barking and I was yelling get the fuck away from me I am calling the police right now, so they turned and ran back toward down town.

It took the police a little while to get there but

Bille: I am pretty sure they didn’t know I was gay I mean I wasn’t asking them for a date or anything and they didn’t follow me from the bar.

Betty: Has anything like this ever happened to you before?

Bille: Growing up as a kid I was harassed by a couple boys. When I was younger I didn’t know what faggot meant. I had never heard of gay or homosexual or faggot. I was harassed by my mom’s boyfriends as well. Sissy girl. That’s what they called me. Little sissy girl.

Betty: Have you changed your routine because of this incident?

Bille: It has made me more cautious. Now when I walk my dog, I carry a flashlight and a little baseball bat. A little kids one that is hard in the center but has foam around it. It will still hurt.

One of my friends gave me a web site where I can order pepper spray.

Betty: How far away were you from your apartment?

Bille: I was not even half a block away.

Betty: What would you say to people who are reading this?

Bille: Buy pepper spray! If I had the web site on me I’d give it to you. Make sure you are in well lit areas because that’s one thing the police said I should bring up to my apartment management we should have better lighting outside in that area. Remember I had turned around and was heading back home. Don’t walk alone. This could happen to anyone it was a random act.

Bille: I didn’t really feel it was a hate crime at first because he only said it the one time, but after thinking about it even though he only said it once then pushed me it could be. It did think it needed to be reported so our laws can get better and protect everyone.

In that time I texted the first 20 people on my phone that I had talked to recently and sent out one massive text warning that if they were out be careful cause the guys ran back in the direction of the downtown bars, I was also able to post on face book from my phone. Ann E Position called me from her work, she had read my Facebook posting We talked and she was able to calm me down quite a bit. I was pretty emotional. The police arrived and took the report. like I said earlier it was dark so it was hard to give them a good description. After they took the report we talked a bit more and one of the officers said “look at it this way at least they didn’t have baseball bats”. He was referring to the incident about a month ago where 4 men jumped out of a pickup truck and beat a bicyclist with baseball bats. No one has figured out why.

Western Washington University LGBTA The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance at Western Washington University is a student organization which supports lesbians, gays, bisexuals, people who identify as transgender, and their allies; in the various stages of their coming out process, in the creation and affirmation of positive self identities, and in the promotion and defense of their human and civil rights.
