7 SMART NATURAL METABOLISM BOOSTERS

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Motherhood. My life’s mission. My purpose. My kids. As moms we have the greatest intentions to be the very best we can be for our children. We have goals and dreams to raise our kids to be confident, kind, caring, responsible, happy, and productive adults. From the moment that strip turns pink, or those adoption papers get approved, or let’s face it, we bring Buster home from the shelter, we are thrust into the world of judgement on how we parent. Everyone seems to know more than us and some are overly anxious to dump their opinions on how we are failing at raising our kids or furbabies (even though they have neither). But don’t WE know what’s best? It may seem naïve, but I genuinely believe that when we enter parenthood, there is an inner power that awakens from the deep. The worrier. The risk-assessor. The planner. The patient listener. The defender. The self-sacrificing one. The MOM. So why is it that although we are all these incredible things and more, we allow ourselves to doubt our choices when it comes to our kids? We worry that we aren’t doing enough for them. That we are failing them. We need to acknowledge the fact that being a parent does not make us immune to mistakes. We can only do our best and be willing to change our ways when we do mess-up, which for some of us can be quite often. WE, society, are the ones who instill doubt in those around us. WE cause our friends and neighbors to feel inadequate. Just spend 5 minutes on Pinterest and I guarantee you’ll be questioning your abilities as a parent, provider, house-keeper, cook, laundress, decorator, and birthday planner, among the many other duties that fall upon us. So how can we stop the madness? Let's SHARE our failures. Be open to discussing reality. Put your ego on the shelf and let it gather dust. Parenting failures are very much a part of the journey we are all on together. I have never met one parent who didn’t have the same hopes and dreams for their children. We want them to be successful, right? Well, doesn’t that mean they need to also learn how to fail successfully? We need to be open and honest with our mistakes so we can learn how to better ourselves. If we hide our failures, we are teaching our children that when we fail, we must hide it, and pretend we never failed in the first place. That is crazy! We ALL fail. We need to stop judging each other so harshly. 04 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

We have all experienced the toddler in public throwing the biggest tantrum you’ve ever seen. Whether you were the spectator trying to distance yourself to save your eardrums while you cast disapproving and judgmental glances, or God forbid YOU were that child’s mother, desperately trying to calm your child who missed their nap, had shots that morning and who’s little legs were throbbing in pain as you made your way to the pharmacy to pick up their medication. Let’s take a step back people and think before we judge. For the ones who continue to scowl at the mother doing her best, just remember how you treated her when the roles are reversed and you find yourself in that same situation in your future. These reasons and more are why I am so excited to share our True Beauty Award Winner, Kristina Kuzmic, with all of you. With over 860,000 followers, Kristina’s comedic and sarcastic videos on parenting are a refreshing dose of honesty we could all use. “My number one job as their parent is to love them, and loving them does not mean making sure they’re always happy and get every single little thing they want,” Kristina says, noting that loving her kids actually means “raising them into healthy, decent human beings.” “Until my kids are adults, I am not their friend,” she added. “We are not on the same level. I’m the authority. My child’s well-being is more important to me than my child’s opinion of me. My job is not to be liked by my kid.” Well said, Kristina. We at The Beauty Battalion are honored to have had the opportunity to get to know you personally and are very proud to feature you on the cover of our May 2017 issue. Xoxo,

SEASONAL TIPS FOR WARM WEATHER How you can look and FEEL great!

F

rom cool and casual to feminine and expressive, the newest trends in apparel and shoes are giving women the tools to express themselves through fashion this season. Unabashedly girly shades, such as pinks and blushes are dominating the landscape, while creative construction and soft materials offer a variety of comfortable options for all occasions and lifestyles. Brittany Moeller, women’s buyer for shoe retailer Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, shares some tips on how to wear the latest trends during the warm weather months.

Embrace Your Feminine Side Floaty, floral dresses, lace patterns and new blush shades are all trending this season, empowering women to express themselves through feminine details with the utmost confidence. Embroidery and crochet designs can be found on everything from shoes to jeans, as well as jackets, blouses and t-shirts, which is a subtle nod to inspirational throwback styles. Not convinced blush is your color? Not to

worry: Neutrals, creams and tans also provide a sophisticated color palette to work with this season.

Express Your Casual Side “Whether you’re looking to take the Bohemian style to the next level or you love a cool and sporty outfit, there are so many ways to pull off a casual look this season -- plus plenty of footwear to choose from,” says Moeller. Cropped jeans, short sleeve cotton dresses and graphic t-shirts can all be complemented by the latest in outdoorinspired sandals, sneakers and slides.

Get Comfortable Selecting pretty and elegant fashion options doesn’t have to translate to swollen and sore feet at the end of the day! In fact, footwear manufacturers have created clever ways to deliver more comfortable choices. Consider this: • Block heels and wedges are on trend, easy to wear and easy to walk in! • Popular materials, such as velvet and

suede, are comfortable and soft to the touch. • Hidden construction features, such as zippers on the back and Velcro strapping, make a shoe easier to slip on -- rather than a closure that isn’t designed to “give” when placing over the foot. “How you define femininity and stay casual and comfortable is an individual choice. This season’s fashion footwear choices cover all the bases,” says Moeller.

To find footwear for any occasion this spring, check out Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. With more than 80 locations from coast to coast, they offer high fashion styles from top designer and name brands that meet today’s current trends. Visit offbroadwayshoes.com for more information on how to venture into the warm weather in style. With so many styles trending right now, it’s easy for anyone to feel great while wearing the latest fashions. Courtesy of StatePoint

Repeat with remaining bread and sausage links. Heat large skillet over medium heat; add butter and let melt. Place French toastwrapped sausages in skillet, seam-side down. Cook until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes total.

Scrambled Eggs and Ham in a Waffle Cup 6 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cups Smithfield Honey Cured Boneless Ham Steak, diced 1 tablespoon butter 8 waffle cups (4 ounces each) 4 teaspoons maple syrup, warm, divided 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped In bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cheese, salt and pepper; stir in ham. In 10-inch, nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add egg mixture; reduce heat to medium-low. Using wooden spoon, scrape eggs from edges of pan to center. Flour, for dusting 1 package (about 1 pound) frozen prepared puff pastry, thawed 9 eggs, brought to room temperature for 30 minutes, divided 1 teaspoon water 1 Smithfield Hometown Original Fresh Sausage Roll, sliced into 8 patties, cooked and halved 1 pound fresh asparagus spears, cut into pieces 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved lengthwise salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry and cut into eight 4-5-inch squares and transfer to greased or parchment-lined baking sheets spaced about 1 inch apart. Using small knife, lightly score line 1/2-inch inside edges of squares to create framed border. With fork, prick several holes in center of pastry squares. Bake squares 7-8 minutes, or until pastry has puffed substantially yet not begun to brown. Remove from oven and immediately tamp down centers inside of scored line carefully with back of fork. Lightly beat 1 egg with water and brush outside frames of pastry with egg wash. Slightly overlapping framed pastry borders, equally divide and arrange sausage, asparagus and tomatoes in pastry squares, leaving centers open for eggs. Top each with cracked egg, seasoning with salt and pepper and sprinkling with cheese, if desired. Return to oven and bake 8-10 minutes, or until puff pastry is golden brown and eggs have just set. Let cool slightly and transfer tarts with spatula to serving plate and serve warm.

What's Your Body Shape? TIPS & TRICKS TO DRESSING YOUR BODY SHAPE What’s an apple body shape like? A woman with apple body shape tend to have wider middle compared to her shoulders and hips. Because your abdomen is wider, it’ll appear like you have no waist. Your overall appearance appear to be rounded. The shape of an apple echoes exactly this type of body shape hence the name. You can have medium to large busts, wide or narrow shoulders and/or fleshy arms. Your most attractive asset is your legs. Alternate names for apple body shape are O shape and circle.

THE APPLE SHAPE

You may have an apple body shape because of these three likely reasons: 1. You tend to be wide (carry extra weight) at your abdomen area (especially waist). 2. An overweight H (banana/rectangle) or hourglass. 3. Post-menopausal women. Since estrogen is produced lesser, all the fats now reside at your belly. How To Determine If I Am An Apple Shaped? To determine if you are an apple shaped, stand naked in front of the mirror with feet together. If your middle section (abdomen area) is wider compared to your shoulders and hips and you carry extra weight at your belly area, then you’re an apple shaped. Usually an apple shaped body has little to no waist definition.

THE BANANA SHAPE Women with banana shaped body is like an hourglass body shape at the top and bottom ONLY but with little curve at the waist. The waist is the definitive difference when it comes to judging whether you’re a banana or hourglass shaped body. With hourglass, the waist is well-defined whereas for banana, the waist is not defined because it has almost the same width as the shoulders and hips. How To Determine If I Am A Banana Shaped? Your shoulders and hips are around the same size with non defined waist. Your waist measurement is less than 9” smaller than your shoulders or hips. Banana shaped women commonly (but not always) have short waist and flat bottoms. When you pack on the kilos, the fats are almost always evenly distributed.

14 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

BROAD SHOULDERS In short someone with broad shoulders (also called inverted triangle) will have this sort of silhouette (well mostly, unless your waist and hips are wide too). Charlene Wittstock who is the Princess of Monaco and the wife of Albert II, Prince of Monaco has broad shoulders. She was a former Olympic swimmer hence that explain her built.

THE PEAR SHAPE What’s a pear shaped body like? A person with pear shaped body has wider lower hips compared to its top body part (especially shoulders). Alternate names for pear shaped body are A shape, triangle shape, spoon and bell.

However there are also women out there who are not swimmers or athletes but are gifted with natural broad shoulders. I said gifted because it’s not a bad thing. You might think it is with the ugly ‘men’s back’ but in fact women with broad shoulders look nice, elegant and attractive in the right choice of clothing because the clothes hang on to the body beautifully.

But wait, how do you know if you have broad shoulders or narrow shoulders? If you have broad shoulders, your shoulders will be wider than your hips. As for narrow shoulders, it’s the opposite; your shoulders will be narrower than your hips. you can read more tips on them too.

Most pear shaped body has low wide hip, rounded fleshy bottoms, thick thighs, narrow shoulders, small chest and distinct waistline. How to determine if I am pear shaped? To determine if you are pear shaped, stand straight in front of the mirror, naked and with feet together. If the length of your front shoulders (left shoulder to right shoulder) are narrower than your front hips (left hip to right hip) or if the measurement around your shoulders are narrower than your hips then congratulations, you are pear shaped!

THE HOURGLASS Hourglass shaped body is the most desirable body shape for women. Perfect balanced proportion and sexy curvaceous body are the two main reasons why many women and men lust over this hourglass shape. It’s the epitome of beauty and femininity. And it’s the undeniable truth whether we like it or not. As tempting as an hourglass body shape may be, there are actually only about 8% women in the world who owns this body shape. If you are a pear, inverted triangle and rectangle, more often than not you are actually trying to balance your lacking proportion to create the hourglass figure. Have you noticed that? FASHION 15

A well-fitted bra and underwear will give the illusion of a more defined waist and at the same time enhance your busts.

Go for tops that end at just below your widest part of your stomach. Anything higher (at your waist) is unflattering. You can also go for longer tops but be careful if you have short legs as longer tops will make you shorter.

16 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

Empire top and evening dresses cover your stomach while the V-neckline draw attention to your face. Remember to avoid gathering just below the stomach because it’ll make you look like you’re pregnant.

Wearing dark colors pants or skirt slim down your lower body part and at the same time disguises the unfavourable areas. Light colors such as white, yellow, orange, pastel makes the upper body looks fuller and at the same time enhances it.

Loose crumply clothes will only make your lower half widen and hide your upper curves. Wear fitted clothing for best results. Wearing layered tops like addition of vest, cardigan, jacket and even scarf can add volume to the upper body which then help balanced the proportion.

Tops or dresses with printed motifs, patterns like ruffle or horizontal stripes, flounce or pockets or embellishment like beading, embroidery or lace grabs attention and enriches the upper body.

FASHION 17

Wear necklines that create narrow shoulders illusion. Go for V-neck, plunging V-neck, scoop, halter, wide straps or gathered neckline evening dresses or top. If you want to wear one shoulder top or dress, go for one that has diagonal pleating. The diagonal lines will help distract the observer’s eyes and also soften the shoulders area.

Absolute no to bateau, off-the-shoulders, spaghetti straps, square and strapless necklines. These necklines will only broaden your shoulders.

18 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

Dark colour like black is known to make you look smaller because it has the slimming effect. When you wear dark tops, you’re making your upper body smaller and with light bottom, you’re making your lower body ‘heavier’ hence it helps to balance out your proportion. Don’t just stick with black, you can go for dark brown, dark purple, dark navy or dark grey for example.

Good undergarments give good support to your bust and makes your waist more defined.

This is to create illusion of a shaped waist. You can wear longer top if you have slim thighs and long legs.

Semi-fitted clothing is the best bet. Anything too hugging will accentuate your straight frame. Baggy or loose clothing will only make you boxy so you should avoid too but if you’re going for the straight cut look with no waist definition, loose clothing it is.

FASHION 19

To look wonderful in fitted clothing, you need to have good undergarments foundation. Wear fitting bra that will give proper support to your breast and create curves at the right place.

Go for fitted clothing as these will show off your womanly body. Bear in mind that fitted clothing doesn’t mean tight clothing.

20 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

If you want to show off your figure, avoid baggy and boxy clothing as they will only hide your curvy shape and tiny waist. Be proud of your curves!

A

STEPS TO THE PERFECT FOIL POUCH 1. A 12-inch square piece of foil is a good starting point, but you may need to adjust depending on the recipe. Remember you’ll need plenty of extra room around the ingredients for the heat to build up and cook the contents to perfection. 2. Use heavy-duty foil to avoid tears or poor seals that can spill ingredients and precious seasonings and juices. 3. Spread foil on a flat surface and add a light nonstick spray, if needed. 4. Place ingredients and seasonings in the center of the foil. 5. Bring long sides of the foil together over the food. Pinch together and make 1/2-inch folds straight across at least twice for a strong seal. Remember to leave plenty of open space between the foil and food. 6. Make 1/2-inch folds on each short end, folding toward food but leaving at least 1 1/2-2 inches between the seam and food.

Gochujang-Glazed Chicken Servings: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes 4 tablespoons Nakano Seasoned Rice Vinegar – Roasted Garlic 2 teaspoons gochujang (chile bean paste) 6 tablespoons maple syrup 4 teaspoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons, plus 2 teaspoons, olive oil 4 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 8 chicken thighs 4 cups fresh cauliflower, riced (use grater or food processer so cauliflower resembles rice) 1 1/2 cups fresh scallions, sliced 2 cups fresh sugar snap peas 3 sprigs fresh cilantro, for garnish Heat oven or grill to 375 F. In large bowl, mix together vinegar, gochujang, maple syrup, soy sauce, olive oil, mustard, salt and pepper to form marinade. Dip chicken in marinade and toss lightly until coated. Lightly oil foil pouch and layer base of pouch with cauliflower. Add scallions and sugar snap peas then place chicken on top. Carefully pour remaining marinade over pouch contents (ensuring that liquid stays inside foil). Seal foil packet and bake or grill 30 minutes. Open foil to create 2-inch long vent then bake or grill another 15 minutes, or until completely cooked. Garnish with cilantro before serving. Chef’s tip: For best results and added flavor, marinate chicken 30 minutes before preparing pouches. Substitutions: In place of gochujang, red pepper flake paste can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes with a few dashes soy sauce and 1 dash sugar. Alternatively, substitute 2 teaspoons sriracha for gochujang.

24 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

7. Handle pouch with care to avoid piercing or tearing, and always use tongs to remove pouches from heat.

Bartlett Pear and Oat Crisp

Bartlett Pear and Oat Crisp Servings: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes 4 cups fresh pears, medium diced 4 tablespoons Nakano Seasoned Rice Vinegar – Mango 3/4 cup quick oats 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup, plus 2 teaspoons, all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 6 tablespoons butter, diced into 1/4-inch squares Heat oven to 375 F. Toss pears in rice vinegar and set into lightly greased foil pouch. Combine remaining ingredients in bowl and use two forks to combine ingredients until mixture becomes crumbly. Pour mixture evenly over pears, seal pouch and bake 20 minutes. Open top of foil and bake another 10 minutes, or until crisp and golden. Chef’s tips: For crispier crust, refrigerate crumbly mixture 30 minutes before baking. Serve with scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

7 SMART NATURAL METABOLISM BOOSTERS

1

VALUE FOOD AS FUEL AND EAT.

If you want to weigh less, you’ve got to eat less, right? Wrong! If you take in too few calories, it can cause your body to lose muscle mass and decrease your metabolic rate. Plus, when you skimp on calories, your body slows the calorie burn rate to conserve the fuel it's got. “Underfueling is just as risky as over-fueling,” says Dr. Calapai. “In an attempt for quick, noticeable weight loss, many people wrongfully believe that eating as few calories as possible is the best solution. Not only can this lead to numerous nutritional deficiencies as the body is getting less food overall, it can actually have the opposite effect on weight loss.”

MIX UP YOUR WORKOUTS. When it comes to the best workouts for

26 THEBEAUTYBATTALION.COM

weight loss, neither weights nor cardio can completely move the needle on their own. Interval training is the best way to shed pounds, increase your metabolism, improve your cholesterol profile, and improve insulin sensitivity. Turn your favorite aerobic exercise, (running, biking, even walking) into an interval workout by adding periods of intense speed (start with 30 to 60 seconds) followed by periods of rest (normal speed) for the same amount of time. Do this six to 10 times to complete a fatslashing workout. As you get better, slowly increase the amount of time of increased intensity.

3

BECOME BEST FRIENDS WITH BREAKFAST. Commit to starting the day with a good breakfast. What should you be having? Morning munchies that are slow to digest and leave you feeling fuller longer. Try a mix of lean protein with complex

carbohydrates and healthy fats. Fresh fruit, egg whites, steel cut oatmeal, Greek yogurt, fiber rich cereals are things to grab for. “You’re not kick starting your metabolism if you have coffee for breakfast. Skipping breakfast puts the body in starvation mode slowing your metabolism to a crawl to conserve energy,” says Dr. Calapai.

4

SPICE UP YOUR DIET. It turns out capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their mouth-searing quality, can also fire up your metabolism. Eating about one tablespoon of chopped red or green chilies boosts your body's production of heat and the activity of your sympathetic nervous system (responsible for our fight-or-flight response), according to a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology. The result is a temporary metabolism spike of about 23 percent. Stock up on chilies to add to salsas, and keep a jar of red pepper flakes on hand for topping pizzas, pastas, and stir-fries.

It’s a frustrating scenario. You eat right and exercise yet you have gained weight or cannot shed weight. You may have inherited your mom's slow-motion metabolism, but the good news is; you’re not stuck with it. Research shows you can trick your body into burning calories more efficiently, especially if you hit the gym. “By strength-training just a couple of times a week, for example, you’ll reverse 50% of the seemingly inevitable metabolism slow-down that comes with age, says Dr. Christopher Calapai a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine. Here Dr. Calapai shares 7 Metabolism boosters that don’t require a visit to an endocrinologist or a prescription.

5

DRINK GREEN TEA. If you always opt for coffee over tea, you could be missing out on a major metabolism boost. In a recent 12-week study, participants who drank 4-5 cups of green tea daily, then did a 25-minute workout, lost an average of two more pounds and more belly fat than the nontea-drinking exercisers. What’s is its magic? The brew contains catechins, a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells and helps speed the liver’s capacity for turning fat into energy.

6

SNACK SMART ALL DAY. It sounds counterintuitive. Why would you eat continually if you wanted to lose weight? Eating five to six mini meals, portioned to fit on the size of a salad plate, rather than three larger meals every day, keeps your metabolism going. "Snacking every 2 hours will also prevent you from going without food so long that you become so hungry that you overeat," says Dr. Calapai. “Try not to let

more than 4 hours elapse between meals and make sure each meal includes protein, for an extra metabolic boost,” he adds. If you eat a high-fiber breakfast of cereal and fruit first thing, for example, have a midmorning snack, such as yogurt and fruit; for lunch (try four ounces of chicken or fish on top of a leafy green salad); then another snack late afternoon, like a banana and a piece of low-fat cheese. Dinner is then a lighter meal for example four to six ounces of turkey, salmon, or another lean source of protein with steamed veggies.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP. Lack of sleep is linked to a major increase in the risk of obesity. This may partly be caused by the negative effects of sleep deprivation on metabolism. Lack of sleep has also been linked with increased blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, which are both linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes It’s also been shown to boost the hunger hormone ghrelin, and decrease the fullness hormone leptin This could explain why many people who are sleep deprived feel hungry and struggle to lose weight.

10 Steps to Prep Your Pet for Travel

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen summer comes around, a common favorite tradition is jumping in the car and hitting the open road for a vacation, whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer excursion. For pet parents, that exhilarating idea isn’t always so simple. Instead of being forced to leave your furry friend behind, follow these tips and suggestions to bring your four-legged companion along for the ride. Get checked out. Before loading up the car, consider a check-up with a veterinarian to ensure that your pet is physically capable of handling a road trip. Long hours in the car can be taxing on older pets that may not be used to the stress of travel. Prepare your pet. Once you’ve made sure your pet is ready to hit the road, start out with short drives to make sure he or she is comfortable in the car. Take a trip around the neighborhood or about town to check his or her reaction and attitude. Plan accordingly. Since not all hotels and accommodations are petfriendly, be sure to double-check that your reservations allow furry guests. Additionally, make sure that all of your planned activities and adventures can safely involve your pet. Pack necessary supplies. While you’ll likely be concerned with packing the right clothes, shoes and accessories, your four-legged companion has needs as well. Make sure to bring along proper food, water and respective bowls; toys for down time; treats for good behavior and any other necessities to help your pet feel at home. Travel safely. Even pets that have spent ample time traveling in the past can feel more comfortable in the car while inside a cozy carrier. It can be a good idea to bring along a breathable carrier with plenty of space to help serve as a calming presence in case travel time starts to take its toll. Take proper ID. It’s important to always have your pet’s ID on its collar, but it can be even more important while out of town when your pet is in an unfamiliar area. Plan for play. You’re sure to have plenty of activities planned during vacation, but keep in mind that your pet will need some time to stretch his or her legs, too. Prior to taking off, look for parks or other pet-friendly areas on your route to incorporate some playtime. Stay inside the vehicle. The iconic image of a pet-friendly road trip is a dog with his head out the window and the wind in his face – however, it’s not a safe way to travel. Make sure your pet is safely inside the vehicle at all times. Make frequent stops. Even if you can “hold it” for lengthy periods, your pet will likely require more frequent bathroom breaks while on the road. Mapping out pet-accessible stops can help you keep your pet comfortable while still making good time. Don’t leave your pet. It’s never smart to leave pets or children in locked cars, and it’s an even bigger no-no if you’re in an unfamiliar place. Your pet is likely to be on high-alert anyway due to the stress of traveling, so keep him or her by your side throughout the trip. With these steps, you can hit the road for some summer fun without having to leave your pet behind. Find more pet care tips at eLivingToday.com.

Solving Pets’ Oral Health Needs

A

shiny coat and bright eyes are signs your pet is in good health, but his or her mouth may tell another story. Especially if your pet is on a regular dosage of medication, he may experience dry mouth or other oral health issues. In fact, one of the leading causes for dry mouth and some other oral health issues can be certain medications, which can have a negative effect on the production of healthy saliva. That lack of healthy saliva, or even a reduction in its protective quality, can cause bacteria and fungi to grow in a pet’s mouth. This can lead to dry mouth, which in turn can lead to issues like bad breath, excess plaque accumulation, periodontal disease and tooth loss. Whether you suspect a problem or just want to take preventive measures, protecting and improving your pet’s oral health is a multi-step approach. Schedule regular cleanings. Having your pet’s teeth cleaned by a trained veterinarian can help stop problems before they start, as a vet may be able to identify emerging issues during a cleaning before they become a more serious concern. Provide ample drinking water. It may seem obvious that your pet needs daily water, but for a pet with dry

mouth, it’s exceedingly important to provide plenty of access to fresh water. In addition, specially formulated water additives can help eliminate bacteria and reduce plaque buildup. Deliver oral care every day. Brushing your pet’s teeth daily is a good place to start, but it isn’t always a realistic solution, and for pets on medications, brushing every day may still not be enough. Another option to help combat dry mouth is Zymox Oratene Brushless Oral Care, which can destroy germs that cause bad breath, eliminate the plaque biofilm that can lead to tartar and provide a therapeutic benefit for pets on medications. The line includes a toothpaste gel, breath freshener and drinking water additive. Establish a routine. Maintaining a daily schedule can help your pet get used to the different ways that you manage his or her oral health. This may include adding moisture to food or using products designed to promote good oral health, such as breath freshener sprays that wash and protect teeth or brushless products that make it easy to establish a daily routine. TRUE BEAUTY AWARD WINNER MAY 2017 Self-Proclaimed Recovering Pessimist and Truth Bomb Mom: Meet Kristina Kuzmic By Jennifer Weaver

A

fter the thirtieth person left her tiny, onebedroom apartment where she’d prepared and hosted a free pasta dinner, Kristina Kuzmic collapsed to the floor and wept the most joyous tears she’d ever experienced in her life. In an instant, the single mother of two toddlers realized she could make a positive difference in people’s lives. “I realized how obsessed I’d become with myself and my own misery. I breathe, and eat, and drink, and make-out with self-pity. That’s literally how I felt,” Kristina said as tears welled up in her eyes. “All of sudden, I believed I had something to give … I had been sobbing for so long of hopelessness and despair, but in that moment, it was a glimmer of hope. I never again felt defeated, or worthless, or useless.”

Being an internet sensation with more than 300 million video views is a far cry from the destitute divorcée who once was struggling to make ends meet with a government-issued food assistance card a decade ago. Today, Kristina is living in Southern California, happily married and the mother of three children who keep her creative juices flowing on parenting topics that viewers can’t stop watching. “It is just so refreshing to see a community rally around a real person and a real mom,”said Kuzmic fan, Elizabeth Peace, mother of two from Arlington, Va. “She’s somebody who makes you feel better for being human instead of trying to be this fake version of what everyone wants you to be.”

Bring Your Idea to Life 5 tips for starting your own business

L

FAMILY FEATURES

ike any idea, the great ones come when you formulate a plan and turn that idea into action. Starting your own business can be stressful and demanding, but also both personally and professionally fulfilling. Getting a business up and running takes planning, smart financial decisionmaking and backing, and stacks of paperwork, but these tips can help guide you through the development stage and help you ready your idea for unveiling.

Create a Business Plan

To get started, create a simple overview of the business you intend to start. This plan will be your roadmap moving forward and should include a mission statement, a company executive summary, a list of services and/or products offered and their costs, a target market analysis, an organizational structure, financial projections and expected cost of operations. Remember, this is a fluid process, so keeping it simple at the beginning may be beneficial in the long run.

Finance Your Business

Whether you plan on self-funding your business – be it through savings, credit cards or personal loans – or looking for other sources of start-up income, i.e. grants or venture capitalists, you’re going to need funding to get your idea off the ground. If you don’t have the capital to fund the venture yourself, look for investors who share your passion and that you believe you can work with or aid in the form of research grants or small business loans backed by the government.

Determine the Legal Structure

Decide on which form of ownership is best for you: sole proprietorship, partnership, Limited Liability Company, corporation, S corporation, nonprofit or cooperative. Owning your own business comes with federal tax obligations related to the type of business entity you establish. Often, during the infantile stages of your business, it can best serve you to register as a sole proprietor – which comes with less paperwork and upfront expenses. Acting as a sole proprietor does carry personal risks, however, so be sure to consult an attorney prior to finalizing the ownership structure.

Choose a Name and Location

Regardless of whether your business will be brick and mortar or online, deciding on a name that best suits your product or service and appeals to your intended audience is an important step. Once you’ve picked a name, select a location that offers opportunity for growth, proximity to suppliers, accessibility to customers and an acceptable level of competition, then check to see if the domain name is available online and make sure it is usable in your county and state. If it’s available, register it with the county clerk, secure the domain name and register a trademark at both the state and federal levels.

Register for Taxes, Licenses and Permits

When starting your business, you need to account for city licensing, state incorporation, business entity fees and more. Conduct a thorough search beforehand to determine applicable filing fees. In addition to fees, your business will have to pay certain state, local and federal taxes, including income taxes and employment taxes, based on the legal structure of your company. You’ll also need to obtain any licenses or permits, potentially including city or county business permits, liquor licenses or zoning variances. Cultivating Connections How networking can build your business

B

usiness is built on relationships. For many entrepreneurs whose small businesses are thriving, successful networking is one of the most common threads. Making connections and building relationships are among the most beneficial aspects of networking with other small businesses, according to more than half of the respondents in a survey by The UPS Store. This is especially true among younger business owners, who are more likely than their older counterparts to take advantage of networking opportunities with fellow small business owners. Not only do they crave these connections, 61 percent of small business owners say they want to establish in-person relationships. Attending networking and meetup events is a great way for entrepreneurs to form new relationships, share experiences and celebrate their hard work. In honor of National Small Business Week, The UPS Store will offer several networking events to facilitate small business connections. The following tips can help small business owners make the most of networking events. Practice your “elevator pitch.” When introducing yourself, be prepared to give a brief explanation of your business, boiled down to a couple of sentences. Be sure to include your business name, the solution you provide and anything that makes you unique. The key is to deliver enough context that others can engage in meaningful

conversation, while keeping it succinct enough that you have plenty of time to listen. If you think your elevator pitch is perfected, submit a 90-second video describing the business or idea to enter The UPS Store national Pitch Off contest at theupsstore.com/pitchoff for a chance to win $10,000. Embrace the competition. It may feel counterintuitive to forge a relationship with a direct competitor, but there’s some obvious benefit to trading notes with someone who is operating in your market from a similar vantage point. Remember, while neither of you is going to give up proprietary information, a respectful dialogue may get your wheels turning to think about solving a problem in a new way. Represent your brand well. A networking event is intended to be social, but it shouldn’t be treated casually. You are every bit the face of your business in this setting as you are within your business walls. Dress the part and present yourself as you would to potential customers. For a happier, healthier you, take some time to clean and clear your body and mind. Here are five great ways to give yourself a mid-year refresh. 1. Rise and shine. 5 TIPS TO REFRESH 3. Get outdoors. Get outdoors and walk, hike, cycle or paddle. Take along water-resistant, rugged outdoor tech gear to enhance the experience. Users can also input goals and get notified when goals are met.

YOUR BODY AND MIND 4. Eat well. Rethink your eating habits. Don’t just buy quick and easy premade foods. Try switching up your meals and snacks by adding whole foods, like seasonal fruits and veggies to the mix. ring the delicious tastes of a traditional steakhouse to your own dining room with simple steps that make it easier than you might expect to please a room full of hungry guests. According to a survey conducted by Idahoan, 86 percent of Americans have avoided going out to eat at a restaurant for reasons such as crowds, bad service and noise. Instead of suffering through the inconveniences, ditch those concerns and bring steakhouse flavor home – an experience 79 percent of survey respondents said they wish was easier to recreate in their own dining room.

Set the table

Rather than plating food with any old dishware, break out your nicest dishes and set the table the way a restaurant would. Remember: forks on the left, knives on the right. Pull out the linen napkins for an added upscale feel. Properly setting the table instantly gives your kitchen or dining room the feel of heading out to a restaurant.

Change the mood

Most fancy steakhouses keep the lights dimmed low, so find creative ways to mimic that ambiance at home. If you don't have a dimmer switch, invest in a smart bulb that lets you easily convert a standard fixture into a custom light in minutes. Or skip the overhead lighting altogether and instead dine by lamp or candlelight. It’ll change the way your dining room traditionally looks by setting a scene that more closely matches that of a restaurant. Also try turning on your group’s favorite music to change up the audible impression of the night. It doesn’t need to sound like a rock concert – just give the room some subtle liveliness with soft tunes playing in the background.

Dress the part

Another way to change the atmosphere is to ask friends and family who attend to dress in more formal clothing. Simply acting as if everyone is out on the town can help bring an elevated sense of gaiety to the room.

Start with soups

Much like in a traditional steakhouse, please your guests’ palates at the start of the meal with a warm soup. Idahoan Premium Steakhouse Potato Soups – which bring together real Idaho red potatoes, flavorful spices and rich cheeses in four varieties – provide a creamy taste in every spoonful, perfect for giving your “customers” a restaurant experience from the comfort of home. According to the survey, Americans are more likely to order a potato soup at a steakhouse than other flavors like crab bisque or broccoli cheddar, making potato soup, which can be prepared in only five minutes, an obvious option to serve prior to the main course.

Main menu

After everyone has their fill of a creamy pre-meal soup, pile their plates with a savory meat and side dishes. A popular combination of a home-cooked

steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus can easily do the trick for those who come with a big appetite.

simple and sweet. With the evening winding down by this point, a scoop of cool, creamy ice cream should cap off the meal perfectly.

DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

D

ining out is as much about the experience as it is delicious food. That’s why when you’re creating a restaurant-like meal at home, every detail counts. The little touches go a long way toward making your meal extra special.

Presentation: When serving starters like soups, present bowls plated on a saucer and be sure to include a soup spoon on the side. For the main course, take care to create attractive dishes rather than simply mounding food on the plate. Garnish: Remember that eating is a multi-sensory experience and making food look great is the first step toward making your guests’ taste buds sing. Accent plates with a sprig of parsley or a seared wedge of citrus. For a savory, cheesy potato soup, sprinkle some freshly grated cheese over top just before serving and add a pinch of scallions for a pop of color. Service: Take a cue from well-trained servers. Be ready with refills for depleted drinks and clear empty dishes promptly.

Try a chemical peel and/or a microdermabrasion. If the skin itself is supple, microdermabrasion could work very well to address skin elasticity, texture, tone and overall appearance. It’s a less expensive option than lasers. Chemical peels work at the cellular level, smoothing the fine lines in the chest area with very little downtime. There are varying strengths available so it is very important to have an experienced person administer peels. Microdermabrasion and peels are usually recommended in packages of 3 or 4, performed several weeks apart.

Happy Fur Mom Day! For me, I always wanted kids, but unfortunately it was not in the stars to happen. So, when just over 2 ½ years ago, I rescued my fur pup Josie, I gained an even bigger respect for “Mom’s” in general. Not having kids, I really only have had to take care of myself, and it’s been a process learning someone has to go to the bathroom in the morning before me!

#FirstTimeFurMom I never truly understood how some people were so crazy about their pets, till I took on the responsibility myself. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up having pets, I even was lucky enough to have pony, however the true responsibility of having them stay alive, was not just up to me.

I knew with my travel schedule, and her being a puppy she was going to need a lot of attention and I would need some help. As much as I knew I got this, I also knew I wanted to do what was best for her as well. I immediately took her to my brother and sister’s in law since they have always had dogs and they could be the ones to help guide me on my new little fur kid…upon arrival I will never forget-everyone was so very happy for me and it was a few weeks till Christmas. She was like a little stuffed animal, almost fake looking, but someone else that day was truly the most excited..you see, my brother’s lab- Ms. Bingley (Ms. B) was only 4 years old and she immediately created a bond with the puppy. We truly believe she thinks Josie is her baby as no dog would put up with the things Josie does to her. On walks, and hikes, Ms. Bingley is never too far from making sure Josie is o.k. or near-by. Their size difference does not seem to matter, and lucky for me since Ms. B was so well trainedJosie picked up many good habits. It’s amazing to see, how much dogs actually learn from each other-however the love labs have with water is something lil Josie is not buying into any time soon. They play, and Josie has become another part of their family, when I travel. I am blessed to have family so close, and Josie to have found a “Dog Mom” in Ms. Bingley since we don’t know what happened to her mom since Josie was rescued from a box in the trash. This pup

as my friends say..hit the jackpot-but I tell them she is the one who has truly changed me for the better, and opened my eyes in so many ways to appreciate so many other things.

Mom’s come in all different ages, sizes and shapes. Being a mother doesn’t mean being related to someone by blood-it means loving someone unconditionally with your whole heart! So, Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s, Fur Moms, and Dog Mom’s out there. Here are a few quotes, I hope you enjoy! "God couldn’t be physically with us so he he gave us dogs…" "Notice? Dog spelt backwards is God and they both show us unconditional love." " A dog is the only creature on earth that loves you more then he loves himself." " Gets blamed for everyone’s farts" "There are no bad days when you come home to a dogs love!" " Dogs have a way of finding people that need them, and filling an emptiness we didn’t even know we had"

LACK OF FOCUS OR IS IT

ADULT ADHD? T

wenty years ago, we hardly heard of ADHD, an acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Today, the term ADHD is so loosely used that anytime anyone feels they are unfocused, overly scheduled or mentally cluttered they may say “I’m so ADHD”, but are they? When is it just a simple lack of focus due to stress or bad habits and when might it be ADHD? Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a NYC based licensed clinical neuropsychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services specializes in ADHD and other learning disorders. She offers some characteristics that when chronic tendencies could mean ADHD and is worth getting screened for it.

You have NO filter and are highly impulsive. Being candid, bold, opinionated is one thing and many people with strong personalities possess these traits. If you find you are getting into frequent arguments with family, friends and co-workers who accuse you of not thinking before speaking or acting, then there could be more going on. “You have to look at how certain behaviors impact the general well-being of your life, explains, Dr. Hafeez. If you are unable to keep a job, and 50% of people with ADHD struggle to do so, then it would be wise to get an assessment for ADHD,” she says. "People who find they consistently miss deadlines and simply forget or rush through them without a careful eye on quality of the output are red flags. Of course, there are other psychological considerations and implications but having an ADHD assessment is a good suggests Dr. Hafeez.”

You're constantly putting out fires. People with adult ADHD frequently lose important papers, documents on their computers or their personal belongings like cell phone, credit cards, keys etc. They find they consistently miss appointments, arrive to work late, feel disorganized and scattered. This inattention to the details of life leads to being in crisis mode cleaning up your own messes. According to Dr. Hafeez this is a recipe for high stress, poor confidence, second guessing oneself, and low self-esteem. "When you are constantly cleaning up mistakes or apologizing for lateness you start to question your abilities and judgment. This is the uneasiness that may even lead to depression if adult ADHD isn’t properly diagnosed and treated with the help of a trained licensed therapist who specializes in ADHD,” cautions Dr. Hafeez.

You are either easily distracted or off in your own world. ADHD often has people focusing in two different ways. First, they may have such trouble focusing that they can’t sit through meetings at work, dinners with family or friends, can’t remain engaged in conversations and just feel antsy and always onto the next thing. The second way ADHD impacts focus is where they are so immersed and deeply focused in something that everything else around them is non-existent. “Someone who is in this hyperfocused state can easily lose track of time, their kids, and other commitments because when you have ADHD, nothing is more important than what you are on hyperfocused on,” explains Dr. Hafeez. She goes on to say that people with ADHD feel they “lost time” because they were focused on one thing for so long and didn't realize where the time went.

You feel like there's never enough time for anything. This is because people with ADHD typically overschedule themselves and under-estimate the time it takes for certain tasks. Time management is a big challenge for people with adult ADHD. They often add to their anxiety by creating unrealistic to-do lists then struggle to get things accomplished because they’re distracted. Anxiety is often an overlapping condition, as are obsessive compulsive traits. “There’s a self-defeating cycle going on where they take on too much then feel inadequate when things aren’t completed. They frequently say that there aren’t enough hours in the day,” says Dr. Hafeez.

It is important to really do your research and be honest with your overall quality of life. Then seek out a professional who can offer a detailed assessment which is the first step to diagnosing and effectively treating ADHD.“It is never just one thing. When I offer a thorough assessment, using not just a very comprehensive interview but a complex battery of standardized tests that measures brain functioning, I discover loads of information the patient never saw coming, and so the treatment I design is accurate, long lasting, and can bring about lasting change,” Dr. Hafeez says.

ABOUT THE DOCTOR: Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD is a NYC based licensed clinical neuropsychologist, teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College and the founder and Clinical Director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, P.C. a neuropsychological, developmental and educational center in Manhattan and Queens. Dr. Hafeez masterfully applies her years of experience connecting psychological implications to address some of today’s common issues such as body image, social media addiction, relationships, workplace stress, parenting and psychopathology (bipolar, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, etc…). In addition, Dr. Hafeez works with individuals who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), learning disabilities, attention and memory problems, and abuse. FAMILY FEATURES

very year, more than 2,200 children die from injuries that occur at home, according to estimates from Safe Kids Worldwide. While every parent knows that accidents can and do happen, there are many areas of the home where some preventive steps can help reduce the risk. Go throughout your home to check for these common risk factors and implement corrective actions based on advice from the experts at Safe Kids.

Kitchen

Although it may be tempting to hold a fussy child while working in the kitchen, a safer alternative is a high chair where they can see all the action but be safely out of harm’s way. Place the chair or seat on the floor to avoid possible toppling from atop a counter or furniture, and use the provided straps as instructed to prevent falls and strangulation hazards. n Keep pan handles turned inward, out of reach of little hands, and before opening the oven door, ensure little ones are a safe distance away, putting your own body between the child and the oven so you can prevent any sudden lunges. n Use the rear burners when possible and keep dishes filled with hot food out of reach on counters or table tops. n

Bathroom

Always check the water temperature before placing a child in the bathtub. Remember that small children cannot tolerate the same level of heat that many adults enjoy. n Use a minimal amount of water in the tub, as drowning can occur in as little as a couple of inches. Drain the tub as soon as you are finished. n Reduce access to other water sources by closing toilet lids and keeping bathroom and laundry room doors closed. n Immediately unplug and store items such as hair dryers, curling irons and straight irons, which can retain heat long after being turned off and pose an added strangulation danger with dangling cords. n Keep medication out of reach and always use the intended dosing devices. Common kitchen spoons vary greatly, so using these to measure a medication may be imprecise and result in over or under medicating. n

Living Areas

Prevent window falls and injuries by installing window guards and stops. Remember that windows located upstairs should have an emergency release in case of fire. n Eliminate dangling cords from blinds, either by hooking cords out of reach or using an alternative window covering. n When possible, place heavy items on low, sturdy furniture and use safety brackets, braces and wall straps to attach furniture and large items like TVs to the wall to prevent tipping. n

Stairs n n

Use safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases to prevent falls. Ensure gates are securely attached on both sides and review manufacturer instructions to verify gates are constructed for their intended use. For example, not all gates are intended for use at the top of stairs and may give way under pressure.

Pantry/Garage n n

Products containing harmful chemicals, such as cleaners, should be stored out of reach, but also out of sight to avoid temptation. Keep products in their original containers, which include instructions for proper use and guidance on what do to if ingested, rubbed in eyes, etc. This also helps ensure items are not mistaken for something else and used dangerously.

5 Ways to Protect Your Family in 2017

P

rotecting your family and loved ones is one of your most important responsibilities. Many people think about protection in terms of physical acts, such as practicing safe driving, but there are many more aspects of your lifestyle and home that affect your loved ones’ safety.

Know your own health status

Protect your family’s financial health

Protect the home of your loved ones

Although it can be painful to consider, your untimely death may leave your family reeling. Life insurance can help cover funeral costs, child care or act as income replacement. It can also help pay off any loans you’ve accrued, such as a home mortgage, car payment, credit card debt or student loans.

Ensure your family is breathing safe air

One threat you may not be aware of is radon, a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment but can create significant health consequences in anyone exposed to unsafe levels. Radon is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can go undetected in homes until it is too late. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among non-smokers in America, and claims the lives of nearly 21,000 Americans each year.

It is difficult to protect loved ones if you are not healthy yourself. Make sure you receive proper preventive care, such as regular health screenings and check-ups that are recommended for your gender and age. Find a checklist of important preventive screenings at CDC.gov/Prevention. There are over 2 million burglaries annually in the United States, according to FBI statistics. Home security systems can help put your mind at ease, and having a security system can also decrease the premiums you pay for monthly homeowner’s insurance. Studies have shown that homes with a security system see a 39 percent decrease in financial loss compared to homes with no security system.

Safeguard your family from fire hazards

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with either no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. Batteries wear out and may be taken out to cease persistent beeping then never replaced. Smoke alarms should be in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area and on each level of your home. Women:

The Key to Urinary Health Starts with the Gut

As most women who have suffered urinary health issues know, such conditions can be irritating and uncomfortable. Luckily, there are practical steps you can take to naturally support your urinary tract. It’s first important to understand how your body stays healthy. Believe it or not, one of the keys to optimal urinary function is a healthy gut. When you have diverse strains of good bacteria thriving in your digestive tract, it fortifies your immune health and makes it more difficult for the bad guys to settle in, promoting both urinary and vaginal health from your core. Unfortunately, many aspects of modern life can make it difficult to maintain a healthy level of good bacteria: processed foods, stress, exposure to antibiotics, environmental toxins, the use of daily antibacterial products and even overzealous hygiene habits, to name a

few. What’s more, even the inevitable process of aging is a factor. To support your gut health, aim to eat a diet high in whole foods, paying careful attention to include prebiotic-rich choices, such as garlic, dandelion greens and onions. Prebiotics feed the good bacteria in the gut. You’ll want to be sure to take care of your gut and immune system with probiotics, too. While foods like yogurt, kimchi and miso soup contain probiotics, you may find it helpful to incorporate more targeted support like probiotics for women into your wellness regimen. Look for a time-released formula designed to survive stomach acids (as many do not). In addition to prioritizing gut health, you’ll want to consider adding powerful benefits of cranberries to your daily routine. And while cranberry juice is often the go-to solution for urinary health, cranberry extract in supplement form is much more concentrated, and doesn’t have the added calories or sugar. D-Mannose, a simple compound found in nature that encourages certain bacteria to clump together and bypass the urinary tract wall, is another ally you’ll want to incorporate to maintain proper urinary tract function each day. If adding three new supplements to your life feels daunting, one simple and effective option that can be found at your local Target store is Hyperbiotics PRO-Women. This formula is made with six different targeted probiotic strains for the female system, and has the added benefit of Valensa’s CranGyn, which is comprised of cranberry extract and 100 percent naturally-occurring D-Mannose. The strains in this formula can also help with gas, bloating, irregularity and weight loss, improve nutrient absorption, and even boost mood and energy levels. To learn more, visit hyperbiotics. com, join the conversation on social media at #followyourgut. Whether you struggle with urinary health issues or want to stay one step ahead of the potential problems, be proactive about your wellness. Do what it takes to protect and nurture your gut, immune, urinary and overall health so you can feel and function at your best each day.

he start of spring is the perfect time for new beginnings, including a fresh start on eating healthy. The trick is introducing smart eating habits so tasty and easy that your eating plan becomes more a way of life than a short-lived commitment. One easy way to achieve that habit is by adding watermelon to your daily diet, giving your body a low-calorie option to curb an appetite for unhealthy snacks. Set reasonable goals. A deprivation diet is destined to fail because eventually your body will rebel. Instead, aim for well-rounded meals with moderate portions. If weight loss is your ultimate goal, know that losing two pounds a week is generally considered the maximum, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Satisfy your sweet tooth. Everyone, even the most dedicated health food fans, experience cravings from time to time. Most experts agree that it’s OK to answer your sweet tooth – in moderation of course. Before you take the plunge, think about whether there are other options that could be a good substitute. For example, instead of a sugary candy bar, consider a naturally sweet slice of watermelon for a cholesterol-free, fat-free way to satisfy cravings at only 80 calories per 2-cup serving. Watermelon contains fiber and water, and packs a wealth of health benefits, including strong levels of vitamins A, C and B6. Stay well hydrated. During the warmer spring and summer months, it’s easy to let water consumption slide because you’re focused on entertaining and outdoor activities. However, the warm air can be hard on your body, so it’s important to keep that water flowing year-around. Most adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day, but you can also boost your water intake with foods that have a high water content, such as watermelon, which is 92 percent water and contains protein and fiber so you are satisfied on fewer calories while boosting your overall hydration. s the weather warms up, many people like to take their dogs for long walks or let their cats frolic outside. While you're having fun in the sun, however, pests like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes can tag along for the ride. These pests can be a real nuisance, irritating your pet's skin or even causing disease. To help keep your pets happy and healthy, Mark Beavers, Ph.D., Orkin entomologist, offers these tips on protecting your furry friends from biting pests during the summer season.

SIGNS

Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes all draw blood from their hosts at some point in their lifecycle, and Beavers said spotting the adults is the easiest way to tell if your pet has been affected. * Fleas: Usually, adult fleas are easy to see when they jump on you or your pet, or when you see them crawling along on your pet's skin. Beavers said that if your pet is being bitten by fleas, they will often repeatedly scratch and groom themselves. * Ticks: Ticks crawl about on vegetation, waiting for potential hosts - like pets - to walk by. They attach themselves to a host for days at a time, and most swell up as they feed. Ticks can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, which in rare cases can result in kidney failure for dogs, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is seen in dogs and sometimes in cats. Beavers said that the disease pathogens are often transmitted within

the first 24 hours, so it's best to remove the tick quickly. Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors. * Mosquitoes: Just like people, pets can fall victim to mosquitoes. Mosquito bites on pets aren't always obvious. However, some mosquitoes can transmit potentially fatal heartworm disease. While it may be tempting, do not use human mosquito repellents on your pet. You may see mosquitoes flying around or landing on your pet when it's hot outside, so be on the lookout.

Prevention and Treatment

Beavers advises taking these steps at home to reduce the number of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes on your property: * Adult fleas like humidity and shade, so eliminate shaded areas around your home. * Remove unkempt grass and weeds, prune bushes and generally maintain your yard to reduce the number of ticks, mosquitoes and fleas on vegetation. Keep leaf litter to a minimum, as pests like to live in this damp, protected shelter. * Keep raccoons, opossums, deer and rodents off your property, as these animals can carry ticks and fleas. * Remove standing water from gutters and frequently change out water in bird baths, fountains and potted plants. * Frequently vacuum, wash and dry indoor and outdoor pet bedding. * Regularly groom and bathe your pet to help identify and prevent problems. * Discuss prevention strategies with your veterinarian and have them check your pet for pests if you are worried. Your vet can recommend special flea and tick collars, treatments and shampoos to help protect your pet. To keep pests out of your home and away from your pets, work with your pest management provider to create a prevention and treatment plan. LEAD BY EXAMPLE

By Miah Green

Mother's Day dates back to the era of the Ancient Greek and Romans with a celebration called Mothering Sunday. One of the most important things I have learned from my mom is the concept of "leading by example." She has always told me that I must make my own way and lead others to goodness. How does an 11 year old do that? Thanks to my mom...when I told her I thought we should start a non profit organization, she helped me to research and Caring Crowns 4 A Cause was born. Why stop there?

I

wanted my volunteers to have the highest recognition for all their hard work and CC4AC, an Official Certifying Organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Volunteering is one of my favorite ways to lead others to volunteering, but it is so much more than that.

volunteering or even acts of kindness...it is being a kind and courteous person everyday to all people you encounter! No matter your age, the smallest gesture can lead others to do the same. I want to thank all the mothers, grandmothers and women for all you do! My path as a teen and then adult will be easier because of all the amazing women that have been role models and have truly "LEAD BY EXAMPLE"!

I have watched my mom "lead by example" and therefore, setting an example is an everyday occurrence whether I am in school, home, or at the mall hanging out with my friends. If another student falls down at recess, I will immediately go help them and ask if they are okay.

May's giveaway is brought to you by the amazing (and my fave) SQUATTY POTTY!

My hope is that my peers will follow my lead and not be mean in a situation that is easy for kids to be cruel. At home, I have a little brother and I MUST show him how to be respectful, listen, and be helpful. My parents work hard to provide all the things we need and we must always show how thankful we are for what we have. My favorite place to lead by example is in public places (because it normally shocks people). My brother and I are always holding doors open for others and thanking people for their service from waitresses to custodians. One of my favorite examples is, one day we were at the movies and I followed an elderly lady out of the restroom. I noticed she had a paper toilet seat cover hanging off her pants. I said excuse me, pulled her aside and told her. I can honestIy say that I have never seen someone so grateful! Leading by example is so much more than
