r o t i d E e h T m o r F Letter Magic happens when you get a group of like-minded individuals together and work towards a common goal. Without my insanely talented friends, I would just be a crazy hot mess with a lot of ideas. One of the greatest accomplishments of my life has been the creation of The Beauty Battalion. What started as a fun project to grant deserving individuals a high-fashion, A-List Celebrity-style photo shoot, has far surpassed its original inception. While photos are timeless, and the experience priceless, we wanted something more...a platform to share those individuals’ stories, amazing photos, videos from the shoot, etc. We needed a magazine. Gulp. I had no idea how to create a magazine. I had no editorial experience. I have seen and read a lot of fashion and beauty magazines, and I knew what we did NOT want to become. I wanted a magazine that uplifted readers, provided relatable stories, spotlighted people that were deserving of being the cover model. Thus began the long journey of becoming a self-taught magazine editor. The Beauty Battalion Project has been a fulfilling endeavor for all involved, but after 25+ monthly issues, we had to take some time off. The costs associated with running

a project of this magnitude took its toll. Every member of the team has their own businesses to run in addition to donating their time and money to provide their best for The Beauty Battalion shoots. When we heard about Kallie and her Bucket List, which listed a Professional Photoshoot as one of her top items, our team came together to create magic once again. Without skipping a beat, we were back and better than ever to provide Kallie with the most memorable photo shoot of all time. We hope this Special Edition of The Beauty Battalion Magazine touches your heart and inspires you to be there for someone else. To give unconditionally. To treat others with kindness and love. Trust us when we say, the rewards of giving far surpass any physical gift one could receive. We are strengthened and renewed to continue on our quest to provide this unforgettable experience to more deserving individuals. With your help and support, we can make more dreams come true and change the Beauty industry one Cover Model at a time.

More than anything, Pigs are very social and love to go out and party. So for the ladies who are born under this sign – apply the most shimmery gold pigment on the eyes or lips, and you will not go unnoticed. Yellow is also one of the colours of the Pig so that will fit great! In the office or on a night in the town, pop a bit of colour with eye-catching red lip or nails – make sure both products have longlasting formulas! Pigs might not stand out in a crowd. But they are very realistic. Others may be all talk and no action. Pigs are the opposite. Though not wasteful spenders, they will let themselves enjoy life. tips to get ready the blink of an eye. A DIFFERENT COFFEE BREAK Oh-oh... morning observation, you just found the remote and a packet of crisps buried in your couch after a night watching Netflix. A weary complexion and dark circles under your eyes is the sad conclusion of long night and salty snacks. It’s prime time to act - instead of a cup of coffee to give you a boost when you wake up, use a cream containing caffeine. It drains the tissue, promoting the elimination of liquids, which narrows the blood vessels under the skin and helps to reduce swelling. Tip: Store your cream in the refrigerator for an intensified effect! SAVING TIME IN YOUR SHOWER Even with a busy schedule, your body care should not be overlooked. Multitasking is key here - relax your skin by applying mask on your face whilst you shower. If you’re shaving, you can use your shower gel instead of a shave gel. Extra tip: even a hair mask can be used to shave! It will make your skin very soft and facilitate hair removal. To moisturize your skin in the shower, use a body milk in the shower that will leave your skin radiant! DRY SHAMPOO - A FRIEND TO TAKE EVERYWHERE Hair looking askew and no time for a wash and blow-dry? Dry shampoo is a great alternative to help you inbetween washes. It refreshes the hair and gives it texture and volume – making it so much easier to tame! THE ABC OF COMPLEXION When you do not have time – leave the primer, foundation, powder, blush and the illuminator to one side. Instead of this long routine, choose a BB, CC or DD cream and give your skin a natural complexion. These creams combine care and make-up; providing valuable skin food and simultaneously some hydration. Tired complexion is vanished, defects are camouflaged and the skin appears smoother. A LAST-MINUTE MAKE-UP A revolution in the routine of working women: a lipstick doubles up on lips and cheeks. This miracle of technology gives a fresh appearance in the blink of an eye. Apply a little mascara and you're done! EXPRESS CLEANSING FOR A FRESH COMPLEXION Cleansing milk, eye-makeup remover, and exfoliation: After a long day, we do not want to waste too much time cleaning our face at night. With micellar water, you remove not only the makeup particles but also the impurities in depth. A micellar lotion provides your skin with softness and hydration. For a visible restful sleep, mix some self-tanner in your night cream.

Kallie’s Bu

Lights...Camera...Action!

written by Missy Lovett Tears ran down my cheeks as I read about Kallie and her battle with Cancer. Her sweet handwritten, “Bucket List” really brought on the waterworks as I read each colorful item listed. Then there it was #5: Be in a professional photo shoot. I knew exactly what needed to be done in order to give this special day to Kallie...

I sent a group text to my super talented friends from The Beauty Battalion’s previous projects and within a matter of seconds...they ALL responded YES, they’re in.

We reached out to our friends at Cover Girl, and they were more than happy to supply ALL the makeup for the Photo Shoot AND gift it to Kallie. The generous owners and staff at Creative Wigs & Hair Replacement gifted Kallie a gorgeous wig for her big day...AND she got to keep it! The Robinson and Ross families happily supplied the cute and cuddly puppy, who Kallie later named, “Waylon.” My Pet Pail sent supplies for Kallie and her Puppy. So many kind and generous friends helped to make Kallie’s day magical.

While plans were underway to create the most amazing photo shoot for Kallie, we were contacted by Fox 13’s Dream Team, who had been working on some big items to check off for Kallie’s Bucket List. We decided to team up for this special event and make it an unforgettable experience for Kallie and her family.

The is s o n g a i D M: When was Kallie first diagnosed? What has that been like for her? Your family? How did the idea for The Bucket List come to fruition? K: Kallie was diagnosed 2 weeks before her 11th birthday. She went misdiagnosed for 4 months. Her cancer is fast growing, so in that short time, the tumor had eaten away her mandible and jaw joint. She doesn’t remember a lot from that time and was doing really well for 3 years, and then her cancer came back. She has had two tumors since the second diagnosis. One of which she still has. Chemo and Radiation haven’t been successful this time around. She has tried one trial drug and that also has not been successful. She is waiting for a second trial drug in Colorado. It has been difficult at times, but our family has really pulled together and done things we aren’t used to so that we could be at the hospital with Kallie. The thought for the bucket list came about because I had just found out that chemo wasn’t working and radiation hadn’t either. So I had called one of

THE BUCKET LIST her old doctors, who now works at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and asked her if there was anything available for Kallie and her type of cancer that may not be available here. She said she didn’t think there was, but would look into it, and asked if we had started a bucket list. She said she didn’t want us to lose hope, but to just think about it. I said no because that was the last thing I, as a parent, could think about. It just wasn’t an option. After taking a few days and really thinking about I decided to bring it up to Kallie and see what she thought. That was a hard moment for her but after explaining it to her some more, she came to me the next day with the list. I posted it to my Facebook and Instagram story and the rest is history. www.TheBBmag.com

M: What is Kallie’s daily life like? K: A day in the life of Kallie is one where every day is different. Some days are good and some days are bad. Some days are worse than others. She goes to school when she can. School is her favorite and when she has to miss, it just breaks her down. She does amazing trying to hold it all together. M: Tell us about what it was like leading up to the Photoshoot for Kallie. What was that moment like for you guys when Fox 13’s Dream Team revealed their “surprises” for Kallie? Take us through that moment. K: I hadn’t told Kallie what we were doing that day. I just told her and her sister that it was a surprise. Well, Kallie took it literally and didn’t want to see anything on the road so she blindfolded herself so she wouldn’t see anything! Haha. When we walked in she was so unbelievably excited and happy! You could see it in her eyes. She was ecstatic. Watching the dream team walk in was beyond anything we could imagine. We were all just speechless. It was so amazing to see her dreams come true just melted our hearts. She deserves the best of everything good in this world! It was a special moment for Kallie and for all of us. M: What did Kallie think of the photoshoot? How was that day for her? What were some of her favorite moments from that day? What about you? As her Mom, what did you love most? K: She absolutely loved that day! She has wanted to do a photo shoot for so long and to see that come to life for her, well, there was really nothing better. Her favorite part of the day was... everything! She loved it all! All the clothes, hair and makeup! I just loved seeing all of my kids there, being so supportive, and being able to share that day together as a family. It was great!

M: You had friends and family that came to support Kallie. There are a lot of people who care about you guys, tell us about that. What does it mean to you to have support from your family, friends, and community? K: We really have the best friends and family in the world! Everyone is there to help when needed and want to do everything they can to help us out. It really is amazing to live where we live and have the support and love of our community. They all mean the world to us! M: I’m sure the medical costs are astronomical! Tell me where our readers can go to support your GoFundMe account. K: There is a GoFundMe posted on my friend Britney Briggs Facebook Page and also at https://www.gofundme.com/oursweet-girl-keepingkallie M: Is there anything you or Kallie want to say? A message to those that read this article? Any thoughts you guys want to share? K: We just want to say thank you to everyone that has made this bucket list come to life and to every person that has said a prayer for her or is still praying for her. We will never be able to show exactly how full our hearts are and how thankful we are for all these memories we have been given to share with our sweet Kallie. You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option. Much love to all of you, from Kallie and her whole family! Dog owners dish on how food fa

A

FAMILY FEATURES

sk most dog owners and they’ll tell you that they count the bonds they share with their pets among their most treasured relationships. However, that boundless affection and loyalty isn’t a one-sided effort; dog owners are demonstrating their puppy love in numerous ways, especially when it comes to chow time. There’s much to be said for the unique relationship people share with their dogs, according to the 2018 Pets and People Survey by Just Right by Purina. Nearly unanimously (95 percent), respondents said they view their dogs as part of their families, and more than half reported that their pet pals help them de-stress after a long workday and have comforted them after receiving bad news. Just like any relationship, the bond with a dog requires nurturing. As it turns out, most dog owners are working to keep the love alive with a familiar approach: the notion that the fastest path to the heart is through the stomach. After all, when you view pets as family, you may as well feed them like it.

Encouraging dinner dialogue

A helpful aspect of pet bonding is developing communication patterns that your dog can recognize and understand. In part, this involves commands to help manage behavior, but it often includes other forms of engagement, as well. Mealtime is an ideal opportunity to enjoy some extra interaction, from asking if your dog is hungry to talking your way through filling his or her bowl

24

The Beauty Battalion

with a personalized dog food blend. In fact, 64 percent of dog owners surveyed reported asking their dog if it likes its food after serving it. There may not be a verbal response, but dogs give off plenty of signals to let you know whether or not they’re enjoying the meal.

Personalizing the experience

Humans agree that eating or drinking out of a favorite vessel just makes mealtime more special. That may be the motivation for the 65 percent of dog owners who reported taking time to personalize their dogs’ bowls.

Making dog nutrition matter

The majority of dog owners surveyed agreed the type of food their dog eats has an impact on its health and mood. For 43 percent of Millennial dog owners surveyed, they reported spending more money on their dog’s food than their own groceries. Fortunately, not all nutritionally sound options will break the bank, but it is a good idea to do some research to understand the nutritional value and quality of the food you provide.

Serving up security

Dogs thrive on rituals and dinnertime is an opportunity to create some consistent patterns that help your pup feel safe and secure. A routine with meals in the same place at approximately the same time every day helps strengthen the pet bond because your dog knows he can rely on you to satisfy one of his most basic needs.

actors into pet bonding

If you extend some human courtesies as part of your feeding ritual, you certainly aren’t alone. For example, 73 percent of dog owners in the Just Right by Purina survey feed their dogs before they serve themselves. Not only is it a smart strategy to prevent begging at the table, it keeps your pooch from wondering when his own hunger cravings will be sated.

Celebrating special occasions

If your dog is part of the family, it only makes sense to celebrate special events like birthdays. It’s a good excuse for a little extra attention and maybe a new toy or two. Forty percent of dog owners, including 56 percent of Millennials, have upped their pet parenting game by buying their dog its own birthday cake. Make your own using a pet-friendly recipe or visit a pet bakery for a special birthday treat. Learn more about feeding the bond with your pet at justrightpetfood.com. All statistics and findings included in this release were pulled from a survey conducted online by Research Now SSI on behalf of Just Right by Purina among adults ages 18+ who are dog owners and have some responsibility over the well-being of their pet. A total of 1,010 responses were collected between March 26 and March 29, 2018. These online surveys are not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

DOG FOOD INGREDIENTS FOR UNIQUE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS Your dog is unique, not only in his relationship with you, but his preferences, tastes, quirks and habits. It’s no wonder that his nutritional needs are unique to match. When you’re evaluating food options, give careful attention to the ingredients to find the right blend of nutrients for your dog:

nerve transmission, nutrient metabolism, cell function and more.

Vitamins are responsible for a vast range of functions, including aiding in DNA synthesis, energy release from nutrients, bone development, eye function, maintenance of cell structure, blood clotting, nerve signal transmission and everything in-between.

Protein is essential for building organs and tissues like tendons, muscles, skin, hair and blood; it also functions as enzymes, hormones and antibodies.

Minerals contribute to your dog’s healthy bones and teeth, blood clotting, muscle function,

Fat is a source of energy that helps with absorption of fatsoluble vitamins and fatty acids, as well as promoting healthy skin and coat, immune system, joints, brain and vision.

Carbohydrates are efficient sources of glucose for energy, a source of heat and can be stored as glycogen. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that aids in colon health, as well as managing weight and obesity.

ou might have a favorite cookie or brownie recipe — but did you know you could make it even better by

adding a simple, familiar ingredient? With a few expert tips from Buddy Valastro, author and star of TLC’s “Cake Boss,” you can take your sweet treats from good to great in no time. n Start

with Quality Ingredients — When you start with better ingredients, you end up with a better cookie or brownie. Use real butter, high-quality vanilla and great tasting chocolate. Here, Buddy shares some of his favorite recipes that use M&M’S candies to add an extra special touch to family favorites — making them even better.

n Chill

the Dough — Leaving cookie dough in the refrigerator gives it more body and results in a fuller and better tasting cookie. Plan ahead so you can refrigerate your dough at least one hour — or, even better, overnight.

n Keep

It Uniform — Use a small ice cream scoop to keep your cookies the same size. This not only helps them look professional, but bake up evenly and consistently.

n Pans

Matter — Bake cookies on light-colored, non-insulated cookie sheets without sides. Metal pans will cook brownies faster than glass pans, which means cooking times will vary. Start checking your brownies early to test if they’re ready and prevent over baking. You can find more sweet baking tips and recipes at www. facebook.com/mms.

What to know about a cancer you may not have heard of

A

FAMILY FEATURES

woman celebrating her 40th birthday, a young boy starting second grade or a college grad about to begin his career. All three could develop a rare form of cancer known as epithelioid sarcoma (ES), a form of soft-tissue sarcoma. Rare Disease Day is recognized on the last day of February each year and serves as an important time to bring awareness to soft-tissue sarcomas such as ES. Patients, advocates, doctors and researchers across the United States are aiming to educate people about this ultra-rare cancer and the unmet need for an effective, tumor-specific treatment. Consider these facts about ES:

What are Soft-Tissue Sarcomas and What is Epithelioid Sarcoma?

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) are a type of cancer that occur in tissue like muscle, fat, skin, nerves and blood vessels. There are more than 50 types of STS, including ES, which is a rare form that can occur under the skin in the limbs (such as the arms, hands, legs or feet) or soft tissue in other places like the abdomen. Adults in their 20s and 30s and men, in particular, are more likely to get ES, although it can affect people of all ages and genders, according to research published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

How Rare is Rare?

According to the American Cancer Society, a rare cancer is defined as fewer than six new diagnoses per 100,000 people per year. ES is an ultra-rare cancer. According to available epidemiology and case reports, it is estimated about 600 people are properly diagnosed in the U.S. and Europe each year.

What are the Most Common Types of ES and How Do They Impact Diagnosis?

ES can take two forms: Distal-type: Classic form, typically affects teenagers and young adults. n Typically forms under the skin in areas like hands, legs and feet. n Can be mistaken for another skin condition like an infected wart or a wound that won’t heal, which may delay diagnosis. Proximal-type: Rarer form, mainly affects adults and is more aggressive.

n n

Typically forms in central areas of the body like the abdomen. Can be mistaken for menstrual cramps or an upset stomach, making identification and diagnosis more difficult.

Dealing with a Diagnosis?

Due to its rarity, harmless appearance in its initial stages and occurrence in young people, ES is often misdiagnosed, according to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. For this reason, the Sarcoma Foundation of America recommends checking often for lumps and bumps in places they shouldn’t be. For people faced with a sarcoma diagnosis, it’s important to get a second opinion from a sarcoma specialist. These specialists have extensive knowledge of STS and can determine what form of sarcoma one may have, what stage it is and the best course of treatment. The specialist may confirm the diagnosis with a physical examination, a scan or a tissue sample (biopsy) of the area. It’s common to feel a range of emotions after a diagnosis of ES, according to Clear View Health Partners, including: n Fear n Denial n Frustration n Anxiety n Hope that treatment will be successful n Determination to beat ES

What Treatment Options are Available?

Treatment options depend on a variety of factors, including the location of the tumor, tumor staging and whether the disease has metastasized or spread to other parts of the body. For patients with early stage ES, many elect to have surgery to remove the tumor, which may precede or be followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatment, according to the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. If the cancer returns or spreads, a patient may undergo radiation therapy and chemotherapy. New treatment options are being studied through clinical research, which is why seeking a specialist in the field is important if one is faced with a diagnosis. As with many cancers, early detection is important and can increase survival or successful treatment. Typically, the distal form of ES is associated with more favorable survival rates than the proximal form.

AN ES DIAGNOSIS JOURNEY In the spring of 2008, Maria Voermans’ 4-yearold daughter requested an “airplane ride,” and as Voermans lifted the young girl up with her legs, she had to make an “emergency landing” because of some sudden and significant pain in her upper right thigh. After a few months, the pain persisted. Voermans continued to jog and play sand volleyball, thinking nothing of it. At the recommendation of her primary care physician, she took some antiinflammatories and tried to rest, which wasn’t easy to do as a single mother of two young children. Two more months went by and her leg caused increasing p r o b l e m s . She could feel something in her leg, but never considered it a “lump” because it was not visible on the outside. Voermans took matters into her own hands and visited a sports medicine orthopedic specialist for further testing. An MRI found a mass in her right leg and she was referred to one of the few musculoskeletal oncologists in Wisconsin, her home state. He ordered a biopsy, which on Voermans’ youngest daughter’s third birthday confirmed her worst fear: it was a rare form of cancer called proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma, and it was stage three. Her biggest concern was not living to experience future holidays, birthdays, graduations and other life milestones with her daughters. Voermans underwent chemotherapy, radiation therapy and had surgery to remove the tumor. As of July 2018, Voermans reports the cancer has not returned. Today, she’s a wellness coordinator supporting other people diagnosed with cancer who are undergoing treatment or posttreatment. She’s able to use her own cancer journey to provide empathy to others, and it’s brought satisfaction to the whole experience.

Bucket List Travel Destinations for 2019

Taking time to go on vacation or to just unplug from everyday life can be beneficial, and

there’s certainly no lack of options when it comes to choosing an ideal vacation spot. The options for experiencing an amazing vacation are so plentiful, such as exploring a cruise port, eating and drinking your way around a city or simply visiting a new destination, you may find yourself struggling to narrow down the choices. By focusing first on what type of vacation experience you would enjoy most, the details of the location may more easily fall into place.

“Often, would-be vacationers get so hung up on figuring out where they want to go, they forget to consider what they’ll do when they get there,” said Matthew Phillips, director of travel for AARP Services, Inc. “It makes sense to keep location in mind when it comes to considerations like climate, but knowing what types of activities, entertainment and sights you hope to experience can help ensure you plan a travel experience of a lifetime.” Once you’ve determined how you’d like to spend your time, you can begin to explore some hot travel destinations, such as these:

California:

Rent a car and take a road trip down the California coast and experience sunshine, culture and more as you drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco. It may be one single coastline, but California is filled with scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and tourist attractions, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Hollywood sign.

Caribbean:

There are few better ways to escape the cold weather than with a Caribbean cruise, where breathtaking excursions, first-rate cuisine, exciting nightlife and spectacular entertainment fill every day and night. There are dozens of cruise options available, so it’s a good idea to do plenty of research and look into special incentives and offers to complement the experience. For example, the AARP Travel Center powered by Expedia provides exclusive offers to members on select cruises, including up to $1,000 in onboard credit.

Florida Gulf Coast:

The warmer seasons are perfect for unplugging and relaxing by the sand and water. Head to the beaches of Florida and get a room with a view so the water is never out of reach. For example, Sarasota, Florida offers miles of beaches, including Siesta Key, known for its majestic waters and luxurious amenities.

Southwest France: Explore the beautiful wine-growing region of Southwest France through a fascinatingly historical and invigorating river cruise. For example, the Uniworld Bordeaux river cruise allows guests to sail three rivers: the Garonne, the Dordogne and the Gironde. The experience blends land and water with archaeological and historical tours, artisanal wine tastings, sprawling gardens and charming villages to explore. Take your experience a step further and see the sights while feeling like a local by going on a spotlight tour, an intimate way to uncover hidden gems.

Singapore:

If you want to immerse yourself into a completely new and unique culture, hop on a flight and explore Singapore, commonly referred to as a “shopper’s paradise” for its emerging brands and bargains stores. Enjoy both the urban and natural attractions while indulging in the eclectic dining scene. Singaporean cuisine is full of diverse plates, such as bak kut teh, laksa and friend carrot cake, derived from several ethnic groups.

The Beauty Battalion

(BPT) - With cold weather already here, the winter season has officially started early for most Americans. As the weeks drag on, you’re bound to get sick of bundling up in your sweaters and puffy coats. It’s the perfect time to refresh your style.

But there’s no need to splurge on an entirely new closet full of clothes. Here are a few simple tricks to help you cure your winter wardrobe blues and invigorate your sense of fashion:

DECLUT TER YOUR CLOSET Many people stand in front of a closet full of clothes every morning but can’t find anything they want to wear. If this is you, it’s time for a closet overhaul. Spend a day going through every item of clothing you own. Keep what you love and wear regularly and donate the rest. You’ll be amazed at how refreshed you feel.

CLEAN SMART Taking care of your existing winter clothing (and hard-to-clean winter coat) is imperative! After months of storage, a thorough refresh is needed to keep your winter gear in tip-top shape. Machine washing can be tough on your clothes, especially delicate items. Take better care of your wardrobe staples with the Wi-Fi enabled LG Styler, a clothing care system that uses the gentle power of pure steam to refresh your clothes, reducing wrinkles and odor in as little as 20 minutes. For allergy sufferers, LG Styler not only sanitizes, but also removes allergens and is asthma and allergy friendly(R) certified by the experts at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA).

CO LO R CO O R D I N AT E YOUR ACCESSORIES

LOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA

If you’re bored of your basic, neutral pieces, energize your outfit by choosing a color theme for your accessories. For example, match red shoes to a pair of statement red earrings in an otherwise all-black ensemble or step up a sweater and jeans with a colorful printed scarf. Bold, bright colors reflect your personality. Animal prints and stripes can create an edgy, eclectic look. The possibilities are endless when you start to experiment with accessories and mix it up.

With so many fashion bloggers, it’s easy to stay up-todate on the latest trends. Search Instagram for fashion bloggers that match your style - bonus points if they live in your area and share outfit inspiration that matches your current climate. These fashion gurus also often share sales and discounts that can help save you money when something catches your eye. INVEST IN NEW PIECES Once you get rid of the clutter, you’ll have a better understanding of what you need. A few updated pieces can take you far. If your winter boots are looking tired and worn out, try a new style. If you donated all your jeans, shop for the perfect pair to add to your collection. You may be counting down the days until spring, but these tips will help you get through another stretch of cold weather. For more information on how to refresh your style and home, visit lg.com.

FAMILY FEATURES

hen picking a color for cabinetry, personality and lifestyle are essential considerations. Gray and white cabinets are options for the modern active living lifestyle, whereas green and blue tones may work better for a more eclectic existence. Whichever way you go, colored cabinetry is more than just a trend: it’s a design approach that is here to stay. That’s why careful planning is necessary when you set out to redesign the kitchen. After all, this essential living space is an area where you spend plenty of time, so it should feature visual elements and colors you find appealing. White kitchen cabinets have dominated the market for many years. White cabinetry is constant, safe and classic. However, reports from designers and data on market buying trends are showing a slight shift in

36

The Beauty Battalion

painted cabinetry design from classic white to pops of color. “We know kitchen cabinetry is an everevolving dynamic, but we also believe certain trends are more constant and everlasting,” said Angela O’Neill, director of marketing and advertising at Wellborn Cabinet. “We trust consumers and we believe they have spoken and have spoken very loudly in regard to painted cabinetry.” The current styling trend, reflected in Wellborn Cabinet’s latest colors, is a marriage of traditional and contemporary finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Beloved white is now making way for trending warmer tones featuring shades of gray, green and blue.

A Calming Effect Letting your personality show through with color in the kitchen doesn’t have to mean going outlandishly bold. Paint hues like aqua, mint and olive can all set the stage for a calm, inviting atmosphere. Each of these shades provides a mild taste of colored cabinetry, imparting an effect that is subtle but bold enough to make its presence known. Mink Gray Exploring shades of gray is another way to develop a unique look. Some shades result in a calm, tranquil effect. However, if you’re looking for a more dominant color, an option like Mink Gray from Wellborn Cabinet gives the feel of a much warmer space. Minimalists swoon over this classic yet clean gray because it isn't overpowering, and the timeless color adds to the transitional styling of cabinetry. It All Started with White It’s true that white cabinetry set the pace for painted cabinetry, and it’s likely to remain a popular option for homeowners. Remember, though, that not all whites are the same and different shades can elicit a different design motif entirely. Cabinets in shades of white are enduring and versatile, appearing in cottage, traditional and even modern kitchens.

Also remember that although it’s simple, there’s nothing dull about white cabinetry. Embrace the classic white spacious kitchen in your home but take it up a notch with brass lanterns, a round dining table and fabriccovered chairs. Find more inspiration and planning tools to create the contemporary kitchen of your dreams at wellborn.com.

Choose the Right Cabinet Color Once you’ve made the decision to add colored cabinets to the kitchen, there’s an obvious next question: which color? With so many options to choose from, you may need to answer some basic questions to narrow down the field.

Bold vs. Subtle

If you’re looking for a dramatic change, a bold approach may be the perfect solution. Just remember that a bold space can border on overly bold. It needs to be a color and shade that you will continue to enjoy over time. On the other hand, if you’re set on adding color but not sure something so vibrant will do, a softer shade of that color may offer a more subtle solution.

All Over vs. Accent

Consider whether your vision calls for paint on all of your kitchen cabinetry, or if you’re simply looking to create a standout feature. A color that looks terrific as a focal point may overwhelm if it’s applied throughout the room, so evaluate which of the options you’re weighing is best suited to the use you have in mind.

Fit Within the Home

In many homes, the design style flows from one room to the next. It’s important when making a major change like colored cabinets to understand how the new style will fit with the rest of the house. For example, whether it will complement or contrast, and if it contrasts, ensure that’s the look you’re truly going for.

Completing the Design

Another often-overlooked consideration is how you’ll complete the room once the cabinetry is installed. Think about the rest of the woodwork, other finishes like backsplash and flooring, and dining furniture in the space. Also consider your appliances and any decorative items you may wish to add. Ensure the color you’re considering will fit with the other elements. If it doesn’t, you may have to consider upgrading those features to achieve a cohesive look. If you’re still having trouble narrowing down your selection, many designers recommend selecting an inspiration piece and designing the rest of the room, including the cabinetry, to complement it.

FAMILY FEATURES

n communities across the country, many cities and towns revolve around their local school districts. As education is considered one of the backbones of society, it’s common for community members to seek ways to assist students through schoolrelated programs. If you’re interested in making a positive impact on your local schools, teachers and students, consider these tips from the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, a philanthropic arm of Bayer:

Donate Supplies From pens and pencils to computer monitors and other tech devices, schools are seemingly always in need of tools to help students thrive in a hands-on learning environment. Consider donating your gently used items for students to use in the classroom. For example, you may have binders, folders and writing utensils in your home office that could be used in a school setting, or you can even buy new materials at the store and contribute those to students you know personally or to a classroom in need.

Volunteer in the Classroom If a more direct approach to giving is your preference, lending time and talent to a local school can be another charitable option. Try reading to younger children during your spare time, or to have an impact on older students, speak to classes about your job to provide real-world insight. While it requires more of a time commitment and likely certification in some form, applying to become a substitute teacher is a way to assist both students and teachers in your area.

Nominate Schools for Grants To better understand the evolving world, some of the more pressing educational areas include science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). You can assist public schools in your area and help provide more STEM opportunities by nominating them for special grants, such as those offered by the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, which has awarded more than $16 million in grants to more than 900 public schools since

44

The Beauty Battalion

2011. From Jan. 1-April 1, 2019, farmers can nominate local public school districts to apply for $10,000 and $25,000 grants. Past winning programs used funds to improve internet connectivity, develop industrial arts labs and create life science and livestock learning laboratories. Find more information and nominate your local school at AmericasFarmers.com.

Think Outside the Classroom It’s entirely possible the hours of the school day and your work schedule simply don’t align. Rather than helping inside the classroom, you can assist in after-school programs like sports and other extracurricular activities as a coach or sponsor. Additionally, school projects that require time spent job shadowing are common in middle school and high school, meaning you can volunteer to allow students to gain real-world experience by joining you at your workplace for a predetermined amount of time.

Attend Meetings School board meetings in many areas occur weekly or monthly and are typically open to the public. If your local school district allows public attendance, consider making regular appearances. While you may not always share your opinion on school board matters, attending can, at the very least, allow you to stay up-to-date with the happenings of the community and keep informed on important topics and potential areas of need.

Encourage Participation Finding ways to help schools, students and teachers can only go so far with limited assistance from community members. Reach out to others you think may be interested in lending their time and talents, and use social media and other avenues to spread awareness about upcoming events or information you believe need to be amplified. Schools typically play a large role in community settings, but they’re still almost always in need of help from those who are willing to give it. Giving your time and providing assistance where possible can make a positive impact where it’s oftentimes needed most.
