5 Ways to Save Money While Shopping

T

here’s shopping for pleasure, then there’s shopping for purpose. The latter is never quite as fun, but taking a practical approach to buying household necessities can help save money so there’s more to spend on the shopping you enjoy most. Tackle your household shopping with these costconscious tips from the experts at Scott Brand: Keep a list. Knowing which groceries and supplies you have on-hand before heading to the store makes it easier to avoid overspending. Look for a shopping list app that includes sharing features so others in the household can let you know when they use the last of something that needs replaced.

Pull in price-cutting resources. Start by looking at store ads before heading out to shop so you know where to find the best deals. Be sure to clip coupons from the local paper and print more coupons online. Also remember to do price comparisons at online shopping sites. Shop for value. Instead of simply purchasing the cheapest product, do your research to know which product offers the best value. Look for household items like Scott 1000 toilet paper, America’s longest-lasting toilet paper, which comes with 1,000 sheets in every roll to help your family keep on going. Determining which products will meet your family’s needs in terms of performance and long-lasting value at the lowest price can help you save in the long run. Know when bulk spending is better. While it will likely make a larger dent on your wallet at the store, buying in bulk can provide long-term financial gain. Because you’re buying in quantity, you’ll likely be purchasing products that will last longer to help delay a return trip to the store. One way to minimize the “ouch” of the upfront expense: stagger your bulk buying so you’re restocking items over time. Avoid impulses. Especially when you’re shopping with family members, it’s easy to watch the shopping cart grow full with each “bargain” item at the end of the aisle. Unfortunately, these impulse buys can add up quickly. Instead, invite the whole family to help build a reasonable list and then help keep each other accountable to it. If you make it all the way to the register, reward yourselves with a small snack or treat from the check-out aisle. Find more information and ways to save on household necessities at ScottBrand.com.

/ Cover Feature / FAMILY INFLUENCE Jessica knew what she wanted to do with her life to help others from the young age of 13 following a church mission trip to the inner city of Brooklyn, New York. It was there she learned the impact a single decision had on a person’s life. At the age of 17, she took her first job working for a nonprofit in an impoverished area with active gang activity. She witnessed daily the aftermath of sexual abuse of teenage girls and gained an early education about the importance of intervention, and that it takes a collaborative effort to help victims heal from trauma. She became determined to make positive decisions to benefit others, much like her parents who she credits for being strong influences in her life. “My parents are incredible! They are the most down-to-earth, kind, caring, Midwest people I could ever imagine,” she said. Jessica recounted how her mom

began taking her and her brother to serve at homeless shelters and elderly care homes at a young age; so young that she admits she can’t remember a time in her childhood where they weren’t serving vulnerable adults. And serving others didn’t matter if they were wealthy or completely destitute. Her mom treated everyone equally with genuine love and kindness. “My mom inspires me in so many ways. It’s so genuine, too! She never has a hidden agenda in how she treats people,” Jessica said. “She talks to everyone, and by this I mean she literally treats everyone as equal. It doesn't matter if she’s talking with Warren Buffet or the women who is living at the homeless shelter. If all you could do was hear audio of these two types of conversations, you probably would not be able to tell if she was talking to a billionaire or someone who did not have enough money to buy lunch.”

14 / The Beauty Battalion / www.TheBBmag.com

Jessica also grew up watching her dad help others. He cultivated a garden to specifically give the neighbors – and even strangers – the fruits of his labor, literally. He also became the friendly neighborhood mechanic by choice. “He has fixed so many people’s cars I could never count them all, and it’s always at no charge,” Jessica said. “Having strangers at family holidays and gettogethers is so 'normal’ that it’s alarming if there is not a new person sitting around the table playing cards with us.” And those table gatherings have also been opportunities for conversation about what Jessica does for a living. She has been often asked how she views men since they are mainly the perpetrators of abuse on children and youth she assists.

“We must each believe we are the one that can make a difference. We all have different roles and that’s beautiful! Identify what your role is at this time in your life and be the change.”

“Some ask me if I hate men. I've observed my response not being what they expected. I actually think men are wonderful,” Jessica explained. “I think there are men who fight every day to live a life full of integrity and they encourage others to do so by their example. So why do I believe this? I believe this because of my father." While Jessica doesn’t claim to have the perfect family, she does admit she has always been supported and has enjoyed trusting relationships many people have not. She praises her father for his example of how to treat others, and for the way he “speaks truth into my life.” “I grew up with a dad who stands as one of my personal heroes. Sometimes it was in the simple things like not allowing us to watch movies or television that objectified women. He taught me that my worth will never be defined by another's opinion. He showed me what a gentleman looks like and how to treat guys with respect in return.” ”Even though he is soft spoken, his voice is loud in my mind,” she added about her dad. “His choices to protect others if needed, to love in a manner that can only be described as not of this world, and to live his life daily in a way that demonstrates to me that men are incredible.” Jessica acknowledges there is a lot of evil in this world, but also believes there is so much good. She says she works with incredible men that do their best to make the right decision in the face of danger, and with people who live daily lives of integrity, full of character and kindness; “those who do what's honorable even though no one will ever see.” “This is my father,” Jessica said. “This is the lens I see men through.” 15

/ Cover Feature / LIFE CALLING Though Jessica has only one brother – “the best brother ever” – she has 50 cousins who all lived within 15 minutes from each other. Many of them got together multiple times a week. It’s no surprise that Jessica is known for being a people person, and one who engages everyone with love and respect. “I grew up experiencing the beauty of family; loving each other through the greatest joys and the most difficult challenges,” she said. “My family has always been there for me as I have had to face unforeseen challenges in my life, and the gratitude I have for them has no words that could truly express the value they have in my life. “I credit my family for my deep desire to continuously grow in treating everyone I meet like family,” she added. “I want the stranger to feel like when we meet that they are not alone. I have been given the greatest gift in life, and that is love. I know what it means to give love, because of my family. I want to extend this to as many people as possible because my big family always has room for more.”

conscious decision Jessica made before she even completed her senior year of high school. After high school, Jessica pursued higher education majoring in Biblical Studies and Family Education at Multnomah University. She completed the Arts Bridge Scholar program through the University of Utah, and has been trained in NLP and is certified in the Teaching Family Model. She has worked for 17 years in six different states and internationally, including Zambia, with nonprofit charities empowering youth in foster care, areas of mental health, and human trafficking. Her primary focus was then - and still is - helping children and youth heal from trauma and empowering them in their hopes and dreams for the future. She has first-hand experience being a therapeutic foster parent for children who experienced severe neglect, abuse or human trafficking. “We must each believe we are the one that can make a difference,” Jessica said. “We all have different roles and that’s beautiful! Identify what your role is at this time in your life and be the change.”

/ Cover Feature / MAKING A DIFFERENCE The role Jessica is known for currently is as the O.U.R. Director of Aftercare. It’s a position she is humbled to serve in as she believes this is her life calling of speaking for others who don’t have a voice, providing food and shelter to those who can’t provide it for themselves, and finding safe havens for children and youth who have been rescued from bondage of enslavement. “If it was your child or cousin that was on the news being reported that they were being sold for a few dollars for sex, what would you do? I fully realize that this is a hard question to sit with very long, but the youngest child I’ve worked with that had a price tag put on her was six months old,” Jessica said. “So, again, I ask you: What would you do if it was your child or your cousin?” As for herself, Jessica has answered that question by being proactive with the knowledge she has gained over a lifetime that includes establishing relationships and mentoring with the intent to facilitate healing for survivors. She recently coordinated a mentorship program with the Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, and the first mentor interns are now

I am so far from perfect at this, but I’m striving to grow in this every year I get to be on this earth. I cherish life,” she said. “From a young age I was taught that life is short.” While life may be short, Jessica is living it to the fullest on her terms by continuing to locate safe homes and organize care for children who have been rescued from deplorable conditions of human trafficking. She is dedicated to improving aftercare to best serve the needs of children of all ages around the globe.

To people struggling with life’s challenge’s, Jessica encourages them not to give up. She especially wants the youth to know that they are cared about and they matter in this world. “If you’re in high school, or on your children’s PTA, or the next CEO of a company, try to be the person that everyone feels you genuinely care about them,” she said. “Remember we don’t take ’things’ out of this life with us; the only ‘things' we get to leave with is our character.”

Character isn’t trying to look perfect, according to Jessica. She believes it’s freeing one’s “Some people say, ‘Don’t take self from trying to look perfect, life too seriously.’ While I something youth don’t seem to understand that thought realize is within their control. process, I would still say, ‘Take life seriously!’ Every day is your “Just do your best to be honest chance to do great things! 5 WINTER GETAWAY WINTER IS AN IDEAL TIME TO TRAVEL, WHETHER YOUR MOTIVATION IS TO ESCAPE THE COLD WEATHER OR TO FROLIC IN IT. HERE ARE FIVE TRAVEL TIPS FOR BETTER WINTER VACATIONS.

Courtesy of Statepoint

1

Leverage deals. Look for destinations offering discounts and deals. There are plenty of choices a bit off the beaten path. Both warm and cold climate locations will have discounted flights and hotel packages in winter months, so choose your preferred type of weather and search for the savings.

2

Don’t dry out. Flying, especially in winter, can be dehydrating and dry out skin. Stay hydrated and moisturized while traveling to ensure optimal comfort. Pack lip balm and moisturizer with SPF. Also, bring along an empty water bottle in your carry-on gear to fill up after you pass through security. This way, you won’t have to wait for that drink cart to come down the aisle in order to hydrate.

5

3

Stay sharp. Jet lag is rough no matter what, so make sure your travel accessories prepare you to keep up with time zone changes from anywhere in the world. Look for a timepiece, such as the Casio Edifice EQB501DB-2A that features Bluetooth connectivity. A single button accesses your smartphone to automatically adjust to the new time.

4

Pack smart. If you choose a snowy getaway, rent winter sports gear on-site to save yourself the hassle of lugging it with you to the airport and checking it as oversize baggage. If you’re opting for a warm climate, dress in layers to travel so you don’t have to fill precious bag space with heavy clothing items you won’t use once you’re there.

Plan R&R. After the stress of the holidays, a winter getaway can be the perfect opportunity for relaxation. So, even if you are adventuring to see all the sights your destination has to offer, make sure to also plan some downtime. Schedule a spa treatment, a wine tasting or whatever will give you an opportunity to just unwind.

Miah's Message Be ‘ACTIVE’ in 2018 By Miah Green Photos: Alex Kruk

While performing with my Le PeTiT CiRqUe® team at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, there was a reoccurring word I heard throughout the trip. ACTIVIST. The definition of Activist is a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change. That got me thinking…ANYONE can be an activist for what they feel is important to them either on a small or large scale. You must stand up and be present in the change. All it takes to be an activists is passion, knowledge and desire to bring about change. Adopt these tactics to help lead an ‘ACTIVE” life:

1. Educate Yourself - Read and research or whatever you can do to learn the most that you can about your cause.

I WILL BE TAKING AN ‘ACTIVE’ STAND FOR KIDS IN NEED, KINDNESS, AND SUPPORTING CLASSROOM NEEDS GLOBALLY.

2. Social Media - Social media has changed he way we communicate and it is the most powerful tool out there.

3.

Volunteer - Volunteering offers many

opportunities for knowledge and experience.

What will you take an active stand for in 2018? Be the change you want to see in the world ~ Gandhi

4. Friends - Surround yourself with people that have a similar passion for change in the world.

5. Have Fun and Be Creative - Use your personal talents, thoughts and ideas to create your own form of activism. For example, I could use my aerials for a fundraiser or express myself through my art.

6. Don’t Stop - Never stop learning about your cause and always share your passion with others.

7. Live it - Lead by example! You are a powerful statement by the ways you choose to live your life. 25

6 tips for winning scholarships

C

FAMILY FEATURES

ollege is a significant investment and millions of families each year face the question of how to pay for it. One way students can position themselves for success is by seeking out various forms of financial assistance. Earning scholarships can be one way to offset the financial burden, but winning a scholarship can sometimes be as competitive as gaining admission to the college of your choice. While most scholarships don’t entirely cover college tuition, they can be useful tools to help cover educational expenses such as room and board, tuition and books. Some scholarships can be earned by meeting or exceeding certain standards, such as academic performance, while other scholarships are based on financial need or personal interests of the applicant. There’s also a wealth of opportunities that support students in specific areas, whether it be from companies, professional organizations or foundations. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program

26 / The Beauty Battalion / www.TheBBmag.com

offers industry-specific scholarships each year for those looking to study agriculture-related fields. While your academic performance, character and extracurricular resume all play a part, knowing where to look for scholarships can make all the difference when it comes time to pay for your education. These tips can help you identify and apply for scholarships that match your interests and credentials.

Complete the FAFSA

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be required to apply for a number of scholarships, particularly scholarships offered by most colleges and universities based on need. It is also required for other forms of financial aid, such as subsidized or unsubsidized loans. While you can begin filling out the FAFSA on Oct. 1 of the year prior to needing aid, many need-based scholarships give priority to students who complete the FAFSA by their state’s application deadline. It is important to note that some colleges and universities have earlier deadlines.

Talk to Your Counselor

Colleges or universities and scholarship providers often supply information about their award offerings and applications to high school counselors. Many institutions also offer specific awards by major for both new and returning students that can be applied for through the school’s financial aid office. These resources, as well as newsletters and bulletin boards outside of these offices, can help you identify scholarships for which you may be eligible to apply.

Apply for Scholarships in Your Field of Interest

Many job sectors have scholarship opportunities available through related clubs, organizations, small businesses and other benefactors. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund in conjunction with the FFA, provides $1,500 scholarships to students endorsed by local farmers for continuing their education at two- or fouryear universities and trade schools in agriculture-related fields of study. This year, the program will award more than $500,000 in scholarships to students in fields such as mathematics, computer science, business, communications, engineering, farming, agronomy, education and more. Students can learn more about the program by visiting GrowAgLeaders.com.

Don’t Overlook Smaller Award Amounts

When it comes to paying for your education, every scholarship you receive – even those that come with smaller, one-time award amounts – can help defray the costs beyond tuition for books, supplies and living expenses. Many times, scholarships with smaller award amounts have fewer additional requirements that must be satisfied outside of materials traditionally required for submission such as transcripts, letters of reference and an application.

Look for Essay Applications

Students are often more likely to forgo applying to scholarships that require essays, videos or additional assets that promote their accomplishments outside of submitting an application and a copy

of their transcripts. This typically leads to a smaller candidate pool. Due to the added requirements, these scholarships can oftentimes come with larger monetary values, as well.

Use a Scholarship Search Engine

While a simple search for “college scholarships” on any search engine is likely to elicit plenty of options, there are sites available that are dedicated to helping students identify college scholarship opportunities. While paid options exist, there are also several free sites, such as Scholarships.com, Fastweb and Scholarship America, that can provide local, regional and national options based on the information you provide. Other, more industry-specific websites, such as FFA.org, can provide scholarship opportunities that pertain to a certain field of interest.

INCREASING YOUR SCHOLARSHIP ODDS

W

hile there is no way to guarantee a scholarship to help offset the costs of higher education, there are things you can do to increase your odds of getting noticed by admissions departments and those who award scholarships. Before sending in your application, consider these tips:

Get Involved

Students who are involved in extracurricular activities, such as volunteer causes, sports, clubs or student government, often give themselves a leg up on the competition when achievements in the classroom are similar. Getting involved outside of the traditional school day is also a way to network, which can be helpful when it comes time to ask for letters of recommendation.

Apply Early

A good rule of thumb is to not wait until the due date to submit your application and other materials as issues out of your control can arise, such as a website malfunction or a not-yet-submitted recommendation letter. In fact, some scholarships close once they receive a certain amount of

applicants, and those reviewing applications can put a premium on those received earlier.

Look Professional

Ensure your online presence matches the persona your application depicts. As more college admissions departments, employers and scholarship committees are researching candidates online prior to awarding admission, interviews or scholarship money, be sure to clear your social media accounts of any inappropriate or unprofessional material, look yourself up on search engines to be aware of any information available about you and use a simple email address that includes your name in some fashion.

Proofread

Read back through your scholarship application as well as your essay a few times once you’re finished to ensure everything looks and sounds as you intended. Pay particularly close attention to spelling and grammar, and if time permits, ask someone you trust – such as a parent, teacher or counselor – to double-check your work prior to submitting your application.

Retro-Modern

3 Ways to Throwback Style

W

FAMILY FEATURES

hen it’s time for a bathroom or kitchen upgrade, some of the greatest inspiration may come from another time entirely. Some of the most on-trend styles of today are actually throwbacks to bygone eras. Learn how to make your updated spaces pay tribute to re-emerging trends and add your own modern touches with these three new-again looks.

Retro-Modern

A retro-modern design is unique in every way, with elements transitioning from the historically unfitted 1920s to 1950s charm and eccentricity. The result is a space that represents many eras and design styles, and the kitchen is the perfect space to bring this look to life. Start by establishing a focal point for your retro-modern design, such as a functional nod to the past. Long before modern refrigeration, iceboxes were used in many of the homes in the early 20th century to keep foods fresh. It’s possible to mimic this look with the Wellborn Cabinet Premier Series, to achieve an icebox look that actually functions as storage space.

30 / The Beauty Battalion / www.TheBBmag.com

Use contrasting finishes, colors and textures to uniquely define a small space. For example, a modern cabinet scheme in a dark stain or paint contrasts beautifully with stainless steel hardware and a pop of color to break up the cold nature of stainless steel. Then bring some uniformity with an option like Shaker decorative legs, which adds to the multi-era design feel. Deriving from the Shaker lifestyle and tradition, the tapering effect offers a beautiful yet simple design feature. Integrate the look across multiple elements, such as a wooden-style tapered leg icebox, along with stainless steel tapered legs on wall and peninsula cabinets, which can pair nicely with stainless-steel hardware and a 1950s Malt Shop grooved countertop. Accessories are an important part of kitchen design, which is why they should be kept top of mind when building or designing that dream space. Features such as removable under-sink baskets and a double wastebasket kit lend ultimate practicality. No matter the era, lighting is a must for a functional kitchen space. A carefully crafted, multi-layered lighting design is an essential component of a dream kitchen. An option like Hafele lighting, now offered through a partnership with Wellborn Cabinet, makes it possible to illuminate cabinetry, delivering ambient, accent, task and decorative lighting to create the right mood for any space.

Elegant A beautiful, ornate bathroom with plenty of traditional features can truly be an interpretation of elegance in design. Plan for an abundance of luxurious, spa-like elements to achieve this look. Incorporate features such as warm hickory covering every inch of the walls and built-in lighting to set the tone for a relaxing atmosphere. Then incorporate antique-styled mirrors and glass hardware to create contrasts amongst the rich tones and texture. You can create a distinctive alcove effect by situating the sink vanities directly between matching cabinet ends and recessing two mirrors into the wall. A decorative arch valance can add beauty and function, as this is an ideal place to tuck away lighting that provides depth and visibility. Let a large soaking tub take center stage between the sink vanity and a custom makeup area. While you can rely on cabinetry for functional features, it’s also a way to continue adding elegant touches, such as a beautifully crafted tub skirt and arch that complements the vanity area. No luxury bathroom is complete without a stand-alone makeup alcove outfitted with unique features like drawer dividers (perfect for hair accessories) and countertop hideaway cabinets. Consider creating a focal point using rounded spindles to create depth and allow the custom makeup section to stand out in the design. Lastly, embellish the distinguished look with molding options that highlight the feature areas and create a defined line around the room. An elegant, spacious master bathroom is luxurious and functional, proving that practicality can be used in a glorious way.

Elegant

Retro

Retro

Going to the extreme with your aesthetic with a retro design is all about fun, with features such as pops of color in the tile behind the vanities or fun and whimsical wallpaper. A 1950s-style bathroom lets you play on your childlike senses. From bright colors to mixed metals and textures, this unique design style pays respect to the era of Car Hops, Airstream Travel Trailers and Lucille Ball. The key to making a throwback-styled design work for your contemporary needs is all in the modern elements. Think along the lines of illuminated drawers and cabinets and base pull-out wire baskets. These fun twists of technology paired with retro-styled elements make for a winning solution. When it comes to the vanities and cabinetry, remember that both style and color can bring your retro design together. Don’t be afraid to step outside more traditional wood tones, and use unexpected colors such as the pink hue available in Wellborn Cabinet’s ColorInspire program. For the woodwork, look for details such as conical-styled, slender legs that add to the 1950s feel. Reminiscent of days past, a fabulous ’50s bathroom is the ultimate definition of an eccentric design. There’s no time like now to begin planning your on-trend home upgrades. #FIRSTTIMEFURMOM 5 IDEAS TO KEEP YOU & YOUR PET HEALTHY & SAFE According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2018 is the YEAR OF THE DOG and its characteristic word is ACTION! ... The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac. You are a “Dog Chinese zodiac animal” if you are born in one of these years: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018. I am actually a Monkey-according to the Chinese Zodiac…kind of fun to see what animal you are. What are you? Go here to find out: https://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/chinese-zodiac/ By Dawn McCarthy

Looking back on 2017 and welcoming in 2018, I am optimistic and excited. I learned from mistakes made in 2017 (playing fetch at the beach with Josie and the dangers of sand), and excited in 2018 to share more of my experiences, tips, ideas, and great pet products through my monthly article with all of you. Every year we begin wanting & resolving to do (or quit doing) something and expect to be the game changer in our lives. For example, with over 50 percent of pets in the U.S. classified as overweight (like many of us per doctor’s charts) there’s no better time for owners to commit to a new diet, and exercise plan for their pets as that seems to be the top resolution for people too! Here are 5 ideas to consider this year that can help you and your fur kid in the family stay healthy and safe.

#1 Measure Your Pet’s Food - Every Time & Choose an Age Appropriate Diet!

#2 Teach an Old Dog a New Trick

Studies Many of us pet owners “eyeball” their pet’s daily intake, and pour that into a bowl, usually resulting in overfeeding and weight gain. Make sure to use a measuring cup so your pet isn’t taking in more calories than they need. The recommended feeding guidelines on the bag are good place to start, even if like me you don’t think it’s enough. Puppies & older pets have very specific nutrient requirements to ensure their bodies grow healthy and strong. Do pay attention, or talk to your vet or pet store where you by food to make sure you are feeding your dog food tailored to your pet’s life stage and age to keep them in good health.

cognitive deterioration in aging animals. In other words, keeping your older pet’s brain active can actually make it healthier! Teaching your pet new tricks and practicing those they already know are a great way to keep those neurons firing. Puzzle feeders, which force a pet to think through a task in order to be rewarded with a treat, are also an excellent way to keep a pet’s mind engaged.

# 3 Pet ID Info

2018 is the YEAR OF THE DOG and its characteristic word is ACTION!

Over the course of a year, lots of things change- people move, get new phone numbers, and forget to update their pet’s tags, microchip information, and to register your dog. I personally thought the Vet registered my dog for meWrong! You need to register your pet with the City as well, or you can get hit with a hefty fine. Keeping your pet’s information up to date is so important in case of them getting lost or displaced. #4 Make a Date with Your Vet Yearly examinations by the veterinarian are a key component of good preventive care. This will help you stay up to date on their oral care, vaccines, ask advice, or get an expert opinion on any issues you may have with your pet. #5 Try a New Activity with Your Pet From hiking, walking, paddle board- to dog yoga, it’s easier than ever for people to incorporate their pet into a new exercise routine. It’s a great way to bond, it’ll get you both out of the house, and both owner and pet will reap the rewards of a healthy physical activity. Meet-up groups are a great way to find like-minded pet owners to join you in your exercise, too! I personally have a group I connect with nightly, and even do Friday nights together after the park where we can bring our fur kids. Whatever your resolutions may be-I wish you success. My personal- take Action resolution in this year of the dog will be looking into fostering, or getting with some local shelters to help walk pets since that is a part of mine and Josie’s daily routine. I will also be attending SuperZoo for the first time in Vegas over the summer. I look forward to a year ahead of good times and experiences. Always try to rescue when pawsible,

/ Lifestyle /

Every year we begin a new year resolving to do (or quit doing) something and expect to be the game changer in our lives. For some it’s to workout, lose weight, cut out all carbs and sweets. For others, it’s a promise to save more money and get finances on track. Regardless of what you resolve to do, according to Dr. Sanam Hafeez, there is a way to set yourself up for failure or success. The mindset we are in when deciding on a resolution determines it's stickiness. Below Dr. Hafeez, a New York based neuropsychologist affiliated with Columbia University, shares key insights on how to make New Year’s Resolutions that stick.

How to Make New Year’s Resolutions that Stick 1. ENVISION THE END RESULT AND REVERSE ENGINEER IT. According to Dr. Hafeez, neural pathways in the brain can be changed through a combination of visualization and aligned action. She encourages people to journal about what it is they want. Write it all out. “How would life improve? What would all the benefits be? Cut pictures out of magazines of what you want and post them to a wall (or if appropriate, the refrigerator). Get very clear on what you think you will feel like once you see results,” she recommends. 2. GET CLEAR ON YOUR TRIGGERS. Set yourself up for success by understanding what may potentially get you off track. “Sticky resolutions come with planning. If you want to lose weight then begin with clearing out your fridge and cupboards of junk food. That in itself is an action that will tell your brain that you are serious. Get recipes and write out a new grocery shopping list. Writing plans, micro goals and ideas that serve the greater accomplishment you're reaching for creates “buy in” from your brain, says Hafeez.”

40 / The Beauty Battalion / www.TheBBmag.com

3. PACE YOURSELF. “The reason why resolutions don’t stick is because people set the bar way too high and expect achievement way too fast. Think of every week as a win! Break it down into weekly chunks and train the brain to value quick accomplishments,” she advises. The people who resolve to lose weight and get more exercise won’t stick to it if they don’t celebrate small milestones and try to do too much too soon. Resolve to lose 1 to 3 pounds per week. Do this by cutting out soft drinks or juices and drinking water instead. After 10 weeks you''ll be 20 pounds lighter with great skin just because you did one thing week by week until it became your new normal.

4. TRICK YOUR BRAIN BY MAKING IT FUN. “Our language and self-talk is everything and determines if our resolution will fade or will become something we’re still doing in June,” says Dr. Hafeez. “When someone resolves to change their diet, exercise and lose weight they already envision how difficult it is going to be so they are already dreading it before they started. However, shifting the brain to doing something fun that is in line with the goal gets you more committed," she adds. Create a playlist of great music to work out to. Look up recipes on Pinterest to build your new shopping list. When you do the advance preparation that is more fun, and take small steps towards building the new lifestyle to support your resolution, you’re setting yourself up for a win. 5. FUEL YOUR RESOLUTION WITH GREATER PURPOSE WORTH COMMITTING TO. If you want to resolve to save more money, it’s is helpful to have a clear purpose for the money you plan to save. Resolving to save more money is vague making it hard to remain on track. Saving more money to take an amazing vacation or to purchase a home or car is something tangible you can stick to. “It’s common for people to commit to doing something when they connect it to a greater purpose beyond them or an experience they want to have. This explains why lifetime smokers can instantly quit when they learn they are pregnant. It’s not about them anymore. We see the man who is 75 pounds overweight lose weight when his daughter gets engaged. Whenever we can connect resolutions to a bigger purpose our minds get on board, and when the mind is all in, resolutions stick,” explains Dr. Hafeez.

SAY BON VOYAGE TO BAD SKIN... Expert Dermatologist with Skincare Tips for Winter Travelers Another winter is upon us and with it comes the escape to warmer climates. However, traveling puts additional stress on you and your skin. Regardless of whether you are traveling by car or plane, for business or pleasure, board certified dermatologist Dr. Margarita Lolis', must-know skin tips for winter travelers will help make your time away more relaxing and leave your skin rosy on arrival.

Why is it so dry in the sky? The re-circulated air on planes combined with the lack of humidity is incredibly drying to skin. The air inside the cabin of a plane usually has a humidity level of 10 to 20 percent, much lower than a comfortable typical indoor humidity of 30 to 65 percent. This leaves skin in desperate need of moisture. “Most people notice their skin may dry out or even breakout when they travel by air but they may not know why,” says Dr. Lolis. “Whenever the environment is moisture-free such as with recirculated air in a plane cabin, the air actually draws moisture from wherever it can, including the

skin. Dry skin will tend to get drier and oily skin will get even oilier to compensate for dehydration. This is why it’s so important to use moisturizer with hyaluronic acid that does a great job of pulling moisture and keeping it on the skin.” Why is it so dry in the sky? Prep for in-flight moisture maintenance. A hydrating mist is perfect for in flight application. Dr. Lolis recommends spraying a couple of pumps onto your face for instant hydration. It also feels great and helps cool you down if you're on a warm airplane.

Skip the salty snacks. Airport food is not very skin-friendly. “While peanuts and pretzels may look delicious, salt can cause swelling,” warns Dr. Lolis. “Instead, snack on dried fruits and prepack chopped veggies in baggies such as peppers, cherry tomatoes and celery, which are filled with water.” It’s time to take off your makeup! If you regularly wear makeup, keep it to a minimum on the flight. “Dry airplane air combined with foundation and powders is a recipe for disaster to your pores. To avoid clogged pores and subsequent breakouts, opt for tinted moisturizer with concealer. Also use a tinted lip balm in lieu of lipstick. Dry cabin air only makes lips dryer,” recommends Lolis. Puffy Eyes. Jet lag always shows through your skin but mostly in the eyes. Lack of sleep due to possible time changes can have you looking sleepy and puffy. Bring an eye cream in your carry-on that contains caffeine. Another option? “Bring two green tea bags with you on the plane,” says Dr. Lolis. “A half hour before landing, ask the flight attendant for hot water and soak a few minutes. Then add ice to cool down the bags, and apply them to your eyelids before landing. The green tea has antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to decrease puffiness so you'll look your best when you land.” Weather-Proof Your Skincare Products. Pick and pack skin products based on the climate of your destination. “For snowbirds, when going to a warm, humid destination, pay extra attention to exfoliation in order to reduce the

dead skin cells trapped by excess moisture, and pack a cleanser with salicylic acid,” suggests Dr. Lolis. If traveling to a colder climate extra moisture and skin protection from the elements is key. “To function properly, the epidermis needs to maintain a certain moisture level; in the winter, low temperatures, low humidity, and strong wind deplete skin of its natural protective barrier, allowing that level to drop,” says Dr. Lolis. “Sunscreen is always a must regardless of climate you may be traveling to,” she adds. Don’t rely on Hotel Beauty Products: People often breakout when they're on vacation, because hotel products are typically made for people with normal to dry skin. In lieu of using hotel toiletries while traveling, consider packing a few key essentials in your travel beauty bag. “Hotel soaps can be very drying and overly scented,” warns Dr. Lolis. “Beware if you have sensitive skin and remember to bring your own toiletries.” About the expert: Dr. Margarita Lolis, M.D. is a board-certified cosmetic, medical dermatologist and a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon with over 20 years of experience. Room-by-Room

Small changes that add up to a big impact

RENOVATIONS

I

FAMILY FEATURES

f your favorite room is outdated and dingy, a renovation may be all you need to make the old feel new and to fall in love with your home all over again. Upgrading your home can be a big job, and unless it’s part of a premove-in plan, few homeowners find it practical (or even possible, from a budget standpoint) to execute a largescale project. However, tackling the updates one room at a time and focusing on small changes that bring big returns

can put those overdue enhancements well within reach.

Kitchen

It’s the heart of the home, and it’s where many homeowners sink big money to make upgrades. Kitchen renovations don’t have to require a second mortgage though. Re-facing rather than replacing cabinetry can bring about a whole new look for a whole lot less money. This is a good option when the existing cabinets are still in good working condition and you’re just looking for an aesthetic

change. Other small-scale options include swapping out the countertop and sink, changing the lighting fixtures and updating tired floors with contemporary wood or tile.

Bathroom

When plumbing is involved, project costs can skyrocket, but there are some relatively simple ways you can give your bathroom a facelift on a modest budget. For starters, swap out all the fixtures from lighting to faucets. A new vanity is another instant upgrade,

whether you opt for an updated version of the original or select a whole new style for a completely fresh look. Also consider upgrades that can increase natural light and fresh air without compromising privacy, such as the addition of skylights to your ceiling, or “fifth wall,” which can completely change the lighting dynamic of the room. In addition to balanced, natural light, skylights like those from Velux can open to help refresh your space and keep it odor- and moisture-free. For extra style and light control, consider complementing the room’s decor with skylights featuring colored blinds, which are available in more than 100 colors and styles, and also offer remote control operation for convenience in raising and lowering the blinds and opening skylights to let in fresh air. Learn more about making the fifth wall part of your renovation plan at whyskylights.com.

Living Room

A common space where the family gathers is likely to sustain the greatest wear and tear, and because you spend so much time there, it’s also a room where you’re likely to find a list of things that irk you. Creating a new color scheme is a simple fix that transforms the space, but changing the palette of the walls is just the beginning. Also consider taking your redesign to the ceiling with vibrant colors, creative wallpapers or even exposed beams. Round out the room by swapping out lamp shades, adding vibrant throw pillows, replacing old curtains or blinds, or tying the color scheme together with a new area rug.

Bedroom

In your private sanctuary, all the typical options for updates apply for sure. However, this is a space where the furnishings can be an especially impactful way to influence the ambiance, especially if a construction project in the room where you sleep is impractical. Changing out the style of the bed frame and complementary pieces creates a whole new vibe for the room. Then bring in a new collection of textiles for the bedding and drapery to help round out the pseudo-renovation.

Laundry Room

If you’re looking for modest ways to update your home, be sure to consider spaces like the laundry room. Although you likely use this space less frequently than common spaces like the living room or kitchen, plenty of essential activity happens in the laundry area. Practical features like added storage space, cheerful color on the walls and easy-to-clean flooring can all make this room’s tedious tasks more enjoyable.

Which Skylight is Right?

Skylights can serve multiple functions, both aesthetic and practical. Understanding the different types of skylights can help you choose the right fit for your home.

Fresh Air

Solar-powered skylights rely on the sun’s energy to open and bring both air and natural light into your home. Some models, such as those offered by Velux, feature a rain sensor that automatically closes the skylight at the first sign of precipitation. They’re also easy to operate with a touchscreen remote control. Electric skylights are wired into your home electrical system and open and close via a radio frequency, touch-screen remote control. Manual skylights open with a hand lever; a control rod is generally available for outof-reach installations.

Fixed

An economical choice for visually expanding areas such as hallways, stairwells and other closed-in, dark spaces, these static skylights are intended to fill a room with natural light.

Energy Performance

Adding a solar blind to a skylight results in more savings via potential tax credits as well as reduced energy usage. The blind functions to block heat penetration when closed, but during cooler weather it can stay open to allow warm, sunny rays to supplement the home’s climate control system.

ANTI-DRUG CHALLENGE ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION Prescription opioid misuse and heroin use have reached epidemic levels in the United States. Now, students have the opportunity to compete for prizes as they engage in a national challenge to communicate messages to their peers about the dangers these drugs pose. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation and Discovery Education, a leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have come together to offer the second annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge.

The challenge is an extension of Operation Prevention, a nationwide program that educates students about the science behind addiction and its impact on the brain and body. The program’s interactive, standards-aligned resources are available at no cost to help promote lifesaving discussions in the classroom and at home. “Following the success of the first Operation Prevention Video Challenge, DEA looks forward to once again engaging youth in this creative opportunity to communicate anti-opioid messages,” said Sean Fearns, chief of community outreach, DEA. “This kind of peer-to-peer education has the unique ability to better resonate with teens, discouraging prescription drug abuse before it starts.” The video challenge encourages teens to create a 30-60 second original public service announcement that warns other students about the dangers of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use. The challenge aims to inspire teens to research the opioid epidemic, identify its widespread impact on the country and the substances’ harmful effects on the body, and start a social movement that encourages authentic dialogue about this critical issue. The top 10 finalist videos will be uploaded to the Operation Prevention website for a public vote to determine the People’s Choice winner, and the winning PSAs will be featured on DEA’s and Discovery Education’s digital and social media platforms. Winning submissions also will be eligible for cash prizes.

"We have seen firsthand the positive impact this program has had in our communities across the country," said Kevin Hartmann, president, DEA Educational Foundation. "This contest gives students a chance to be a part of the solution in this nationwide epidemic. Their PSAs can help save lives."

The Operation Prevention Video Challenge will close at 8 p.m. March 20, 2018. United States high school students, ages 13 and older, can register and find more information about the challenge at operationprevention.com.
