SCOOP New experience at Hangover Hangover Kemang recently retrofitted its interior with more speakers all the while enhancing its acoustics. Not just stopping on audio, Hangover also added five new lasers and a new light system which is the first of its kind in Kemang. Owl City Adam Young, better known as Owl City, will make his third appearance in Jakarta, and continue to Bali. SCOOP Sunblock After successfully launching events such as Cirque D’Colosseum, Jakarta Saturday Night Live, Hell In High Heels, and Ibiza Calling, now Colosseum Club will present its guest with their annual festival, Sunblock. The event will see a mix of progressive and trance on one side and underground house on the other. Set to be held on Friday, March 6, Sunblock will be headlined by Markus Schulz and Thomas Gold. Representing underground house fans, a new area called Enter the Void will be launched during Sunblock, which will be hosted by local acts including Basement House, House Cartel, DJ DNSW, Darkbark, Rulli, Shawn and Iman 1945MF.
A Journey at Tugu Kuntskring Kunstkring Paleis is known as a venue that brings to life beautiful art, culture, history and food of the archipelago. And to stay true to Kunstkring’s original mission as an Art Circle, the venue is presenting the artworks of Melanie DR Hadarwati. Melanie has an interesting background where in the past she was a professional ballroom dancer, competing in international competitions. She then went to serve in the hospitality business, managed a fashion school in Jakarta, and then an international business club. Her paintings represent her raw artistic passion and she expresses this in an abstract form. X2 Runway Festival After revamping their Ego room, X2 Club shall now hold their annual fashion festival once again. This event will be attended by Jakarta’s fashionistas, fashion designers, models, socialites and celebrities. Starting in the mid-90s, German/US DJ Markus Schulz in 2008 broke into the #10 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart and has maintained a successive run of high-ranking positions ever since. He holds the 2012-2013 DJ Times magazine reader-voted title of America’s Best DJ. This year he is nominated for three categories in this year’s International Dance Music Awards, including best trance DJ. Hailing from the Netherlands, Oliver Twizt offers a unique sound that combines deep house, minimal, and tech-house. His first release in 2008 “Do the Monkey’” immediately shot up to 4th place in the Buzz Chart and received support by Roger Sanchez, Tiesto, and Axwell. Each year the prolific producer presents a new smash hit, and in 2013 he released “XXX” with Indonesian DJ Angger Dimas. X2 Club is once again presenting their annual fashion extravaganza with some of the best designers and clothing Jakarta has to offer. The 2015 X2 Runway festival will be held on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 in X2 and Equinox.
Electronic duo DVBBS (pronounced “dubs”) comprises brothers Christopher and Alex van den Hoef from Ontario, Canada. Initially, the duo made reggae and punk before focusing mainly on electronic music. Their first major success came in 2013 with the track “Tsunami,” a collaboration with the DJ and producer Borgeous, released on Sander van Doorn’s label Doorn Records. DVBBS has performed with Tiësto, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Showtek, Sander Van Doorn and others. DVBBS will be smashing Dragonfly’s dancefloor on Saturday, March 7.

American band Lamb of God was formed in 1994, and their genre is a major point of disagreement among fans and critics alike, although they are mainly considered groove metal. The Grammy nominated band has since produced seven studio albums, and soon plan to release their 8th album this year. Norman Quentin Cook or better known as Fatboy Slim has been in the music scene for the past three decades. DJ Frisco
Frisco Taibo started his DJ career in 1986, and qucikly became a familiar face leading the crowd in clubs all around Spain. In 1991 he went into the world of radio, which he spent the next 9 years there all the while being the director and host of hit radio show, Hit Clubbin. By 2010 he formed his own record label, Tullido Records, promoting house, dance, and electronic music. DJ Frisco is set to perform in X2 Club’s “Playboy Tour” on Friday, March 13.

So, since they are so beatroom we thought it must be time to catch up a little with the boys. Unfortunately one of the members of the band, Ario, tragically passed away in February. But the show must go on and we speak to Massto about what’s now and what’s next.

Tell me briefly about the band. How long have you been together and who are the members. Massto: The band has existed since 2012. Popout is a two piece band. I’m the vocalist and music programmer, and Ario Bayu Putro, was the guitarist and music programmer. We were old friends since we were neighbors being born at Jalan Potlot, Jakarta. We were also well known in the musicians community in 90’s. Tragically Ario died on Feb 13, 2015, the same day our single was released on 70 radio stations. I’m sorry to hear that. What did he die from? He died from minor surgery but he had a high blood sugar level condition, where he shouldn’t have been operated on, then his liver was infected where he actually had an illness for quite a long time. Damn. Now that Ario is no longer here what is the next step for Popout? We already made plans that the beat room to be the first performance after we released the single. So I will be with my friends, musician friends and the producer created a theme ‘The party must go on’. I have many friends in the Potlot community. We are already jamming and have created music together for a long time. I will do this with them with their support for the performance on Feb 26 at Fez Dungeon. For the uninitiated, what kind of music does Popout play? The music is electronic pop rock or some say alternative dance. So you have a new single, what’s that about? Who wrote the song and is it part of an album? Yes the title is ‘Tanpamu Aku Halu’ (without you I’m hallucinating). I wrote it with music by Ario. It’s about club hoppers. It will be in the album.
Do you like dance music? How much does it affect your music? Yes, both me and Ario liked it. It does really affect us as we love many dance music bands. Such as Stereo MC’s, Depeche Mode, EMF, Passion Pit. What other musical influences have you had? The Rolling Stones, U2 and Slank. Have you had any dance remixes of your tracks? Not yet, but plan to. When is the album scheduled to be released? And has the single been getting airplay? On Feb 26 we will distribute a limited edition, four songs from the album. For the full album we plan to release that at end of March and it will contain 13 songs. As I said, the single was played on 70 radio stations around Indonesia on Feb 13, the same day Ario died. That’s uncanny. Besides playing another show at the beat room this March 26, what other shows do you plan on doing soon? We are finding dates with Hang Over in Kemang and plan for 10 cities in April opening for Slank. I see you have quite a strong connection with Slank, how did that come about? I’m the younger brother of Bimbim, Slank’s drummer. Ha, well that’s a connection Yes :) Off the record, or on the record, are you now looking for a new partner/guitarist? Or just cruising along? On the record, yes I need a new guitarist male or female :) Because it’s a duo musical concept, a singer with a guitarist that rock :) www.beatmag.com

Hey Frisco, how’s the new year treating you so far? All OK, I’m really happy because my projects are working well. What are you doing right now and where are you? Now in Spain, working on new releases with my partner Marcos Peon for Sony Music, on my radio show, hitting the clubs and playing my sets around the world… always a lot of work, but happy. How would you describe the music you play and what is the biggest/best show you were ever involved in? Club house or commercial music, I always play these styles in my sets. I have several shows because in 27 years playing I can remember many good places, an open air festival in Spain with more than 100.000 people and shows in clubs in Switzerland, Russia… and after this gig in X2, I´ll remember that one too. How is it being involved in the Playboy Party 2015? Tell us all about that. The tour is beginning now in March, and in the next months Raul and I are travelling to Switzerland, France, Italy, South America, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg. It’s crazy! If you guys were at a party and the DJ before you lost the vibe, what would you do to liven things up? Put all our energy into it and make sure that the people enjoy it quickly but we always go before our show to the club to check the ambience and the people to check which style of music they’re into. On the rare occasion you indulge yourselves in the party, what would be your hangover cure be? Good question, always ,always, always with good music. What music do you love that other people would be surprised to hear about? As I worked on radio for 25 years, I play several styles there. I like different styles and artists like pop, rock… artists like U2, Dépêche Mode, AC/DC, Maroon 5, Gwen Stefani, Madonna. As you can see, several styles. Have you two been to Indonesia before? No, this is the first time and I´m happy for it, I can’t wait. I wish I could be there already.

There are a ton of beaches in Bali to choose from but which one encapsulates your personality?
Pandawa. You’re definitely from Jakarta and you’ve escaped an urban landscape for something fresh and untouched. Problem is, once word gets out, things tend to get pretty touched. So here you are, in this beautiful beach crowded by more Jakarta people.
Canggu. Yep, you’re a surf hipster. You probably have some small jewelry or bikini line and work is hard, but kind of a semi vacation as well. You reckon you’re unique and a free spirit, just like everyone else in Canggu.

FEATURE Kuta. Alright. You’re a bogan. There’s no escaping it. Not only are you holding a Bintang in your hand, you’re wearing it as a singlet. Balinese culture to you is pretty much hair braids, henna tattoos, and a lot of haggling over prices.
Tabanan. You like to be alone. The sand is dark, but then again, so is your soul. Crossing little rivers and rounding little points, you ponder the meaning of it all. If a wave breaks and no one sees it, did it really break? Does anyone care? Sanur. You notice that nice path along Sanur
Beach? That’s so the place is wheelchair accessible. Being in Sanur doesn’t have to mean you’re old, but you’re definitely old at heart and that suits the snail crawl pace that is life in Sanur.
Denpasar. There is no beach in Denpasar. You’re hallucinating and on the bank of some filthy river.
Every other beach more than an hour north of Kuta. You’re the adventurous type. A pioneer traveling to some undiscovered country. Bravo trailblazer, if you get lost, just keep walking along the beach, you’ll eventually make it to civilization. www.beatmag.com

The Beat Jakarta recently caught up with Andrey Syamsudin, brand manager of Colosseum, to better understand the success behind the club that’s only been around for less than a year. A spectacular light show, excellent acoustics, and consistently parading local musicians and international DJs. What’s not yet mentioned is that Colosseum is named Paranoia club of the year. How do you guys do it? Well prepared events, maximum decoration, cooperation with several international event brands, and having a solid team with a goal to make Colosseum one of the best clubs in the world. You have mentioned that Colosseum will provide a new, international standard area serving a different genre. What can you tell us about this? The area is called Enter the Void which will serve house music fans within a unique underground atmosphere. The area will be first launched to clubbers on the March 6 and will be kicked off with an event we call Sunblock. With all the current success of Colosseum, what do you think can still be improved? We are installing the second phase of our lighting system, and we shall add new top notch programs for our customers, including Hell in High Heels every Wednesday night. We brought this event direct from Europe and shall feature what’s called the Theater of Dreams which will be hosted by European models and dancers. There is no event like this in Indonesia, and what’s also great is that we offer free admission for all our lady guests. We shall also hold the annual Angela, Senoras Del Festival on May 13. There is a north-versus-south Jakarta club polarisation in terms of musical and atmospheric differences. Would you agree that Colosseum is located north-side but with a southern ambiance? Colosseum materializes all aspects of what one would regard as a mind blowing nightlife experience, because since the beginning, Colosseum has positioned itself to be the best there is in Indonesia. We don’t define ourselves to be neither a north nor south-style club, because for us music is the only thing that makes sense. What are some of the most happening weekdays in Colosseum? We have seen Wednesdays have good turnouts, and that is why we are hosting the Hell in High Heels on that night. We also see good traffic every Thursday night during our Stage Empire where we present our customers with live music performances of top notch musicians and fun show concepts. There is a belief that from a business perspective, a club’s profitable time is within approximately five years, and if it still doing well it is considered a ‘bonus’. What is your take on this statement? There is some truth to that. The most important thing for a club to do in the first three years is to consistently execute its concept, all the while understanding and keeping up with the latest trends until it becomes a demand. A club must be dynamic and perform detailed evaluations in order to keep entertaining its customers all the while maintaining profitability.

ebruary has been quite a tough month for Jakarta with all the heavy rain. The symphony of rain has made our city into a possiblycalled ‘Jakarta Water Park’ due to the level of flooding. Luckily, as the month of February is passing, so does the rain. The sun is starting to shine more and with that, I have some concerts that can enlighten your day with their beautiful program. This coming March 7, Aula Simfonia Jakarta is somehow refreshing itself and moving into an entertaining direction rather than their usual heavy worship tone. They will instead focus on some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. The first on the program is from Tchaikovsky’s most renowned ballet suite, Swan Lake. Performed for the very first time by Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra; they will present you not only with the highlights from the suite but also the ballet dancers with it. Three accomplished Indonesian ballerinas named Mariska Febriyani, Wenny Halim and Anindya Krisna will perform as the waltz princesses, Odile (the black swan) and Odette. Expect to hear the famous highlight from the waltz, pas de deux, including all the dances from Act III. Aside from the moving Swan Lake, the program will continue with Rachmaninoff’s Adagio from
Symphony No. 2 featuring Bill Kristanto as the conductor. Composed in 1908, Rachmaninoff dedicated this symphony to Sergei Taneyev, a composer and also direct pupil of Tchaikovsky. The third movement of this symphony: Adagio, has become one of the most well known tunes as the symphony reaches its emotional climax. It is a perfect blend of passion and serenity, bringing divine beauty to its upper limits. My advice to watch this piece is to close your eyes and let the melody touch your soul. It is an enigmatic piece. To close this concert, Aula Simfonia Jakarta decided to choose Sibelius’ most beloved Symphony No. 2 aka Finlandia. Written in 1899, this piece is quite a symphonic poem by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius representing covert protests of the time against increasing censorship from the Russian empire, and was the last of seven pieces performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history. Its heroic and optimistic first and final movement was exactly what the Finnish people needed in 1902, during the Russian oppression. A guest conductor named William Savola from United States of America who frequently visits Indonesia is trusted to lead the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra on that Sibelius piece. He has been performing with orchestras in four continents and Savola is a conductor who has also served as a music director. He is known to ‘specialise’ in Sibelius’ Finlandia. So if you get sick and tired of the weather, why don’t you just go to the concert hall and enjoy some great music which is sure to entertain you.

Twelve years after Sony flooded the streets of San Francisco with coloured ping-pong balls to the delicate acoustic rumble of “Heartbeats” – lead single from José González’s mesmerizing debut Veneer – and the Gothenburg folkster is still tugging at the heartstrings with his first solo album after time out recording with his dusty indie outfit Junip, as well as soundtracking Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Although he’s not flogging Bravia flatscreens this time, little else has changed and we’re once again back to the kind of slow-burning zen-folk he made his name with. If you fell for the graceful, elliptical songwriting the first time round then you’ll be pleased to know that Vestiges & Claws sticks rigorously to the gameplan – namely; wonderfully uncluttered arrangements of soft acoustic guitar

complimented by González’s gentle croon. Penultimate track “Afterglow” and lead single “Every Age” exemplify this, providing an easy entry point into the album with their gentle, swirling buildup, while the clap-along almostanthem “Leaf Off/The Cave” takes proceedings to their most energetic level.
track “Which Will”: Dreamy strummed chords dissolve into a circular riff tinged with Mali blues and percussive handclaps. It’s a beautifully subtle effect, repeated most noticeably on “Let it Carry You” and “Stories We Build, Stories We Tell”.
There is more to be discovered, however. As with his previous material, what appears to be straightforward at first glance reveals myriad textures when you immerse yourself more thoroughly. In the intricate fingerpicking there’s the dexterity of Bert Jansch, and the dreamy vocals recall the melancholy mood of forlorn English folkie Nick Drake. Weaving through everything, a rhythmic West African groove pushes the melodies forward. Take “What Will” – perhaps a nod to Drake’s 1974

This is only his third album in more than a decade, and could have easily been recorded twelve years ago, such are its similarities to Veneer and 2007 follow up In Our Nature, but the magic hasn’t been diminished – it might not be revolutionary but this is powerful stuff nonetheless. So many artists get bogged down in transforming their styles to suit changing times. Not José González apparently, he’s sticking to what he does best and that’s just fine by me. Dan Ashcroft.

The luscious Seared Foie Gras (350k) is a firm favorite for many; two generous pieces of foie, pan-seared to perfection, with a slight crunch exterior complimenting the creamy texture inside. Chef Akira paired them with unagi corn croquette which duplicates the similar crunchy-exterior-creamy-interior texture. Binding them together is a spicy kochujang miso sauce and a spiced acacia honey. The Grilled Alaskan King Crab (400k) is another popular item; six pieces of split open king crab, grilled with garlic confit oil, and covered with a special sauce consisting of Kewpie mayonnaise mixed with Japanese seven spice chilies, and also flying fish roe. The sauce is slightly brulee’d to bring out the depth of the flavor even more. The entire dish is garnished with Jalapeno rounds and micro cilantro. Brilliant! KITCHEN From LA to Jakarta, this place is always a crowd pleaser!

alifornia Pizza Kitchen (CPK) first started in Beverly Hills in 1985 with an innovative menu which includes a variety of hearth-baked pizzas. CPK’s California twist on global flavors resonated with guests, and almost immediately, it became a bustling spot for business and family gatherings. The first CPK in Jakarta opened in 2001 at Plaza Indonesia. Though that outlet is no more, there are now two CPKs locations in town: PX Pavilion Puri Indah (opened in 2011), and Kemang, opened since July 2014. We visited the latter one recently, and were greeted by Mr. Wiwing Oentoro, the senior manager. There are actually two parts of the eatery; one is a bar area, and the other is a main dining room, separated by a small patio area. The dining room itself is quite spacious. The vibe is casual chic, with warm wood, comfortable booths, and picturesque scenes of California hanging on the walls. Mr. Oentoro explained to us that CPK’s imaginative pizzas are a genuine institution, particularly the Original BBQ Chicken Pizza (80k). The legendary BBQ sauce is delightfully distinctive, and when mixed with red onions and cilantro, it complimented the chicken very, very well.

And we just couldn’t pass on the Pepperoni Supremo (120k), made with homemade Pomodoro sauce with pepperoni, mozzarella, Parmesan, and topped with fresh herbs. Simply, well, superb! The menu also includes a broad selection of made-to-order pastas, creative salads, soups, sandwiches, and delicious desserts. The Appetizer Sampler (115k) is a great starter; a platter of spinach artichoke dip (very tasty), with avocado club egg rolls, and oven baked meatballs. We also tried the Tortilla Spring Rolls (75k); three types of baked flour tortillas sprinkled with herbs which include the Mediterranean Veggie, Baja Chicken, and Thai Chicken, all served with their own unique dips. We like! Salad aficionados will certainly enjoy the Original BBQ Chicken Chopped salad (110k for full portion, 65k for half); lettuce, black beans, corn, jicama, cilantro, basil, crispy tortilla strips, and Monterrey jack, tossed in a homemade herb ranch dressing and BBQ sauce, and topped with BBQ chicken breast, tomatoes, and green onions. Highly recommended! While The Thai Crunch (Full portion 100k, half 55k, add 7.5k for avocado) brings a more Asian touch; crisp veggies and cilantro with chicken, plus the added crunch of peanuts, wontons, and rice sticks, tossed in tasty peanut dressing. Love pasta? Get a kick out of the Olive Oil & Garlic Spaghetti (Chicken 80k, Shrimp
110k, chicken+shrimp 120k); olive oil, garlic, sautéed mushrooms, parsley, Parmesan, plus chili flakes. And make room for the awesome Warm Apple Pie Pizza (70k). Made from green apples with crispy brown sugar and butter toppings, and served with vanilla ice cream, it’s a dessert pizza to die for! JUST SPORT Combining sport and entertainment with good food.

ust Sport is a new sports-oriented restaurant at Plaza Festival, right in the heart of Kuningan. It is surrounded by sport facilities; ideal for the sportscrazy crowd. There are of course plenty of TV screens to watch your favorite sports, plus a giant projector screen ready for those big matches. The categories on the menu are also sportsrelated. Appetizers and light bites are named ‘Warm Up’ and ‘Fast Track’. We began with the Honey Lemon Salad (45k) from the former category, which has a nice mango-based dressing. From the latter, there are a couple of mixed-platter dishes that are perfect for watching all the sporting actions. The Fast Mix 1 (55k) includes chicken wings, chicken tenders, onion rings and calamari. The Fast Mix 2 (40k) consists of local favorites like tahu pong, pisang goreng, lumpia, and singkong goreng.

On to the bigger meals; the local fare is included in the ‘Asian Games’ category. The big sellers are the mixed rice dish called Nasi Tim Nas (40k), the Nasi Goreng Kambing (35k) – which comes with a balancing, tangy pickle mix which includes pineapple, and a spicy delightful Sop Buntut Pedas+Nasi (65k). For those of you looking for Western dishes, fret not. The Italian-influenced ‘Euro Cup’ selections comprise of the wonderful Spaghetti Meatballs or Spaghetti Arrabiata (50k each). The pizzas here are also a big hit with the crowd. By the way, we totally dig the homemade garlic bread which accompanies the pasta dishes! And there’s also an ‘American Football’ category that you meat lovers should try. The Just Steak and Just Beef Burger (55k each) are some of the more popular dishes from the grill selections.

The desserts are called ‘Over Time’. The musttry here is the banana-based Banoffee (30k). For a more Asian touch, you can’t go wrong with the Pisang Bakar Keju or the Thailand Cassava (30k each).

decade or so ago in America, people associated food trucks with cheap, fast Mexican fares (Hence the term ‘taco truck’) usually operating near construction sites, industrial parks, auto shops and the like. But recently food trucking is having a resurgence of sorts. The trucks are becoming upscale, looking stylish, and the food is getting more sophisticated. Nowadays, you can find them at carnivals, colleges or office complexes, even movie sets. That idea has also caught on in Jakarta. The food truck phenomenon is fast becoming all the rage in town. Many entrepreneurs are coming up with the thought of making street food “hip” or “chic”. The food is usually on the ethnic and/or fusion side, appealing to the younger demographics and Kai Pacifica is a good example of that. This is one of the newer trucks on the block. As fate would have it, the name Kai just happens to mean ‘ocean’ or ‘wave’ in Hawaiian and ‘to eat’ in Samoan. And a concept of pan-Pacific taste was born.

Kai Pacifica began serving on December 8, 2014. The truck is mostly blue and white, with a splash of bright yellow on the logo. The Hawaiian-style leaves and flowers, along with some tribal elements make it stand out even more. There’s a laid back, easy weekend feel to it. Kai Pacifica does an interesting spin on Mexican favorites, using tortilla as the main ingredient. There are some unique Asian touches on the small but scrumptious menu. Let’s start with a selection of burritos; the first one is a Japanese-inspired Melted Katsu Burrito (35k), which combines breaded chicken (or katsu) with mozzarella cheese, rice, and homemade ponzu sauce wrapped in tortilla. The crunch of the chicken katsu is juxtaposing nicely with the soft tortilla, and the tasty sauce just brings it home. For a bit of K-Pop taste, try the Bulgogi Kimchi Burrito (35k); the Korean-style beef bulgogi and kimchi combines sweet and tangy with a bit of kick. Speaking of which, spicy food lovers should go for the Cakalang Burrito (35k); smoked bonito tuna, onion, rice, with bits and pieces of chili padi. Another variety in this band of burritos is the Smoked Salmon Burrito (45k), with succulent smoked salmon, cream cheese, and rice. Don’t forget the ‘surf’ and the ‘turf’ taco offerings, too! First up is the Baja Fish Taco (35k); breaded dory fish, homemade salsa sauce, cilantro, onion, and jalapeño. The second is the Sirloin Beef Taco (45k), with strips of beef sirloin, homemade salsa sauce, and cream cheese. Both are equally mouth-watering. The Nutella Quesadilla (35k) provides a nice ending note; a mélange of Nutella spread and mozzarella cheese, and if you like, add some jalapeño for a surprising flavor.
