Jakarta nightlife used to be famous around the region as the place to go for a weekend of clubbing and fun nights out on the town. It was about the only tourism that the city had. The local authorities have been doing their best to put a dampener things, with new regulations on alcohol that appear to come straight from our friends up in Aceh,

return of Red Square in its new incarnation called Revolution in Ciputra World 1 Mall which is set to open in the early New Year. Red Square has been sorely missed since closing early last year and the new version and vision is set to be bigger and better than ever. Another opening that we have heard about recently is one of our favorite clubs in Bali, Jenja. It will be opening in CITOS, South Jakarta in the first months of the New Year too. Both these clubs, while having their own particular styles of music and atmosphere, are set to bring some quality nightlife back into the city’s nocturnal world

V

aping has become a new hobby for those seeking what they believe is a safer option than smoking. Although not proven 100% safe and the argument rages on regarding its health implications, vapes have become the new reality in the past few years. Vapes are now readily available in plentiful online shops, coming in different shapes and sizes, and of course cool designs. The Beat Jakarta talks to Randy Apriza Akbar, bassist of rock band Sajama Cut cum professional photographer about his vape antics. Were you a smoker before becoming a vaper? Why did you start vaping? I used to smoke up until eight months ago. The reason I quit smoking was because my wife was pregnant and I moved over to vapes. Vaping so far has been a proper cigarette replacement for me. When I vape I would do it with my buddies because I feel when I vape alone it isn’t as pleasurable. What do you think are the pros and cons of vapes compared to cigarettes? Unlike cigarettes that have many dangerous substances, from the research I read it is mainly the substance that makes the vape cloud visible that can cause health risks. A major pro of vapes are the various flavours available. The major con of vapes the many cool accessories are quite expensive. The addiction to me is not the actual vaping, rather the curious nature to try and buy new vaperelated stuff. At first it felt cumbersome to understand the intricate technical details of the apparatus. The sheer fact that vapes are so customisable makes it more interesting once you get the lingo. So are you saying vaping is a safe bet? Make sure you read a lot of material before you start, and not just on its

health implications but also what it can do to your wallet! There are always those who agree with and oppose vapes, both pushing their argument using research results from universities and other institutions. For me vaping works, but I don’t want to be a vape-evangelist because I think each person needs to find out on their own whether vaping suits them or not. What are some tips for those wanting to vape? For those eager to make their first purchase, I’d recommend skipping the starter kit and go direct to the medium and up devices. From my personal experience I found that the taste is worlds apart, and eventually you would want to upgrade to the next level- although for some this is a never ending journey. For those who are like me that have a history with cigarettes, I’d advise to buy vape liquids with six to 12 milligrams of nicotine because from my experience anything less doesn’t satisfy the nicotine habit. So are you saying vapes are expensive? There are various price categories for vapes. Stuff from the US is the most expensive, then there are Malaysian products that I’d categorise as being right there in the middle, and there are the cheaper Chinese sourced options. However I’ve found some of the Chinese options to be quite formidable. At first when I started it was with the US products and I would spend about Rp500,000 for about two to three liquids a month. Lately I’ve found good quality Chinese made liquids and I’ve cut my spending to almost half what I used to. This is quite a lot less expensive than what I used to spend on cigarettes.

The En d, My Frien d? Gone are the awesome little places with solid community in Kemang, replaced by‌..what exactly? Text: Resti Purniandi. Pictures: Our Bar.

24

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE

K

Our Bar was also the birthplace for new bands such as Rock ‘N Cola, The Crabalocker and Stroom, all were formed after a few hangout sessions between the musicians at Our Bar.

Even with its many ups and downs along the way, we have to agree that Kemang has become a breath of fresh air amongst myriad malls and other tall buildings in the city. As one of the chosen locations for many expatriates to live, the area is also lined up with cafes, small shops, supermarket and the like. Besides the usual junk food restaurants, the individual bars, restaurants and cafes are what make Kemang unique.

Unfortunately, like they say, all good things must come to an end. By February this year, the bar and many places within the same vicinity were ordered by officials to leave the land by July this year. The reason was never clear, but it’s mentioned here and there that the land will be used for hotels and apartments development. This is ironic because the contract stated that Our Bar would only be demolished when the land is required for state use. The owners of the bars and restaurants within the vicinity tried to negotiate and bargain, however, in this David and Goliath story, David lost.

Sadly, this year, the regulars have to swallow a bitter pill. A lot of their favorite places had to be closed down for reasons that are still unclear. And the gossip and stories that are whispered among friends provide no real answers.

What was once an oasis for weekenders, like many others, Our Bar is now nothing but rubble and dust. “It brings tears to my eyes whenever an old customer asks us ‘where should we go now?’ I can’t answer that just yet. My heart is still broken.’ says Ony Hafiedz.

Case in point, Our Bar, a two-story bar and restaurant was demolished mid-year. Originating from a place with the same name in Surabaya owned by Charis Basofi, he built Our Bar Jakarta with a group of good friends, Ridho Hafiedz of Slank and his wife Ony Hafiedz, and DJ Patricia Schulz. From their opening night in August 2014, the place instantly became a hit. Where else in Jakarta can you hangout with your favorite musicians and see them just being themselves?

Prawn Star, Diritna, Lucro, and NYC Pizza all suffered the same fate as Our Bar. Is this what has become of Jakarta? Small unique shops, bars, and restaurants should be the heart of “modern kampong”. It’s bad enough that most of the residents have to go through insane traffic jams everyday or listening to drunken slurs of party-goers by weekend, at least give them and the rest of Jakarta the pleasure to wind down with a glass of cold beer or a warm and delicious slice of pizza to cope with the whole chaos around them.

emang is arguably one of the favored destinations to hangout for Jakartans. Modern Kampong, as named by Governor Sutiyoso in 1999 in his decision to transform Kemang from a residential to a commercial area in 1998, as stated in the city master plan of 1985-2005.

The whole atmosphere was laid back, fun and warm. Here you can see many unique regulars; from the guy who comes alone and loves to chat with the bartender, to the same gang of friends who always sit at the same table, to the guy who comes with a different date every time. If you’re lucky, which is often, you could hear Ariyo Wahab, Sandy Sandoro, Once Dewa and Andy /rif amongst other rock stars, belt out tunes together.

Let’s just hope that Kemang will still be a wonderful alternative to gigantic malls and soulless places around town. Let’s just hope that those people who lost their beloved businesses will still have the passion and drive to establish a something new. Let’s just hope it isn’t too much to ask for us all to have a little happiness. Peace.

he new Society Complex in Surabaya is all about style, design, good food and good times. The complex houses a semi-dining restaurant, 1903 Heritage Dining, a separate café/bakery, Historica Coffee & Pastry, and out the back, Buro Bar & Bites, a 1000 square-meter outdoor bar and lounge with an indoor, air-conditioned club lounge. It’s a great spot for all your entertainment needs. I was in Indonesia’s second largest city for the first night of a special, two evening dining event at 1903 with guest Chef Kevin Cherkas from Cuca Restaurant in Jimbaran, Bali, presenting a set course dinners at the end of October. The Canadian born Cherkas is known for his passion in simple yet creative cooking, blending your normal run-of-the-mill ingredients into exciting and visually enticing, taste sensations. Based in Bali and one of the great exponents of fine cuisine, it is always a pleasure to savour and experience his inventive style. With the aid of molecular gastronomy and his own extensive dining heritage; learning from some of the best chefs around the world, guests at 1903 were able to taste maybe some of the finest and most creative cuisine yet to be presented in the city. The six course set menu was nothing less than stunning with a variety of interesting and creative dishes and with a price tag of Rp 490k++, it was a total bargain. After dinner we went out the back to enjoy what Buro Bar had to offer, having a few drinks and enjoying, first the live sounds from the resident band, and then into the air-conditioned lounge for some electronic sounds. CD REVIEW Wonderful

Lana Del Rey

Honeymoon

Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

On her fourth album, fallen prom-queen Lana Del Rey takes us uptown from the sun-bleached L.A. backstreets of last year’s Ultraviolence, to the retro glamour of Malibu and West Hollywood, with an album that sticks closest to the narrative she’s been pitching ever since 2012’s debut Born to Die. Honeymoon celebrates objectified beauty, and plays out like the memoirs of a high-class call girl who spends her days rattling around the beach house in between glamorous Beverly Hills soirées. Themes of sex and power remain at the forefront of her lyrics, particularly the idea of reclaiming power by freely surrendering it: “I like you a lot/so I do what you want,” she coos on “Music to Watch Boys to”, complicit in the role of arm candy for the sleazy yet powerful movie producer boyfriend. Of course, this masochistic fantasy is just that – a fantasy. Opening statement; “We both know it’s not fashionable to love me,” and the final track – a magical cover of Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” - seem directed at the detractors who complain the whole thing is just a cheap marketing trick. It’s these knowing winks that allow Del Rey to indulge the fantasy even more, without appearing facetious. “Step into my world,” she seems to be saying on the album’s cover; “It might be make-believe, but let me give you the tour anyway.”

Musically, Honeymoon is a slow burner, owing more to her debut album – specifically the track “Videogames” - than the Dan Auerbach produced Ultraviolence. Cinematic strings, languid beats, soft pianos and skeletal orchestration give Honeymoon a timeless feel. Why this woman hasn’t been asked to pen a Bond song yet is baffling. “24” would’ve made a far better intro to Spectre than the recently released and vastly underwhelming Sam Smith effort. “There’s only 24 hours in a day/and half of those you lay awake/with thoughts of murder and carnage,” we’re told – as images of a sexy spy movie montage appear in your head. The mid-album trilogy of “High by the Beach”, “Freak” and “Religion” are perhaps the liveliest things on here, thanks to sweeping synths over stuttering electric drum beats you can actually nod your head to, but the tempo remains unhurried. Everything else relies on the barest shades of instrumentation, with Del Rey floating through the sparse atmosphere sounding commanding, yet also oddly detached at the same time. It’s intoxicating stuff, and addictive listening, whether you buy into Del Rey’s daydream or not. Dan Ashcroft is neither high, nor by the beach.

ccording to the laws of nature, rainy season will be coming soon. Meanwhile, there is an Indonesian saying that goes “prepare the umbrella before it rains. Just like an umbrella, below we have listed three recommendations that you should have to welcome the rainy days.

Jacket Jackets are one of the essential items to bring during the rainy season, as it can make your body feel warm any time. Choose a jacket with fun motifs or bright colors to keep you standing out in gloomy days. All about Leather Leather items could be too heavy to be worn daily during the warm weather, but are great options for the rainy season. Besides its thickness, leather material tends to not easily absorb water, protecting the wearer from a little rain. Jelly Shoes It is a common thing to see puddles everywhere during the rain. In this time of wet days, wearing fabric shoes could be a bad idea. Stains on fabric shoes could be very hard to clean; not to mention the musty odor that could arise. If that is the case, it is then recommended to keep those fabric shoes away from the wet surfaces and opt for the jelly shoes instead. Being fully prepared, you are now safe to enjoy the rainy season!

STYLE

Pick the Short Skirt Long skirts can indeed enhance elegance. However, when choosing a skirt, it is also never a bad idea to pick the short skirt. Pair this short leather skirt with a loose shirt to make a chic and edgy look. Wear the Casual Top Avoid tops with thick material to prevent the heavy look. Pair the basic top with the leather skirt instead. Choose the Right Skirt To prevent dampness from the thick material, choose a leather skirt with the right cut. It can be either the flowy skirt, pleated skirt, or anything that is comfortable. Choose the Synthetic Leather When wearing a leather skirt, it is not necessary to always pick one that is made from genuine leather. There is synthetic leather and mixed materials which are mostly lighter than genuine leather. Rely on Bright Colors Darks color absorb the sun’s heat. To avoid this, opt for a leather skirt with bright colors to prevent the overheating. www.beatmag.com

SCBD’S NEW WINE & MEAT CO.

Quiz night at Smokehouse

A new wining and dining option in SCBD has finally opened. Wine & Meat Co. is located inside the complex of Electronic City. Like the name suggest, there is wine and meat aplenty here. A wine cellar is placed smack dab in the center of the restaurant, providing a warm welcome. On the right side of the place is the bar and lounge area, a very cozy place to hang out and have your favorite tipple or two. While on the right side, the dining area is dominated with a Western touch. Our inner carnivores were excited with the choice of meat on offer, but appetizers like the truffle oil-infused Cream of Mushroom Soup and Asian-inspired Chinese Chicken Salad are wonderful starters. The homemade bread really makes superb sandwiches; try the favorite Philly Cheese Steak, or the Tuna Croissant Sambel Matah for a bit of a spicy kick. The pasta selection is noteworthy, too. The premium meat are imported from Australia, New Zealand, and USA. The 350g US Short Ribs is a great choice. But don’t stop there; there are Aussie, Kiwi, or Yankee pick of the Striploin, Tenderloin, or Rib Eye! And always make room for the delicious desserts, like the Brownie Sizzle. We warmly welcome Wine & Meat Co. to the foodie scene of Jakarta! Wine & Meat Co. Jl. Jend. Sudirman Kav. 52-53, Lot 22, SCBD (Electronic City). T.(021) 5140 0262/ 5140 0269. FB: wineandmeatco. et’s face it; Epiwalk at the Epicentrum mall in the Rasuna business district of Kuningan may not be the first choice for many of Jakarta’s foodies, but every now and then it is nice to find a little gem of a place that tickles your taste buds. Gusto is one of those places. It first opened its doors in May of 2013. And it was the place we visited on a lunch meeting not too long ago. The restaurant sits on a corner on the ground floor of Epiwalk, and it has quite astylish décor. The interior mixes old school tile design with

dark wood furniture. A vibrant orange on the cushioned sofa and chairs add a nice accent of color. A sizeable bar welcomes you as you step inside the restaurant. There’s a mountain lodge feel there, with a stone wall and a big buffalo skull. Interesting… Speaking of the bar, Gusto has quite a selection of wine ready for you from the vineyards of Australia, France, California, all the way to Chile and Spain. The bartenders are ready to mix you your preferred cocktails too. Don’t forget to try the signature ones. And should you feel like having a more refreshing mocktail or two, the Gusto Punch (45k) and Heaven Anthem (60k) are some of the cool concoction to have. Gusto has some tantalizing tapas dishes to start you off. The Gusto Croquette (40k) is available with chicken or mushroom, or you can also get the Chicken or Beef Quesadilla (both 90k), and there’s also Gusto Platter (75k) for a mix of four tapas items in a dish.

dente pasta is mixed with garlic, some squid, and topped with prawns. And of course, you gotta have a little bit of chili in there for that right amount of kick. Delicioso! Carnivores, don’t you fret. Our pick for you is the Lamb Chop (140k); succulent lamb, rubbed with rosemary and other herbs, served with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. Then, you can end it on a sweet note with desserts like the Empanadilla (50k); a tasty mix of banana and chocolate in a puff pastry, topped with vanilla ice cream. Gusto is a good option for lunch or dinner, and a nice place to stop by after office hours while waiting for traffic to subside. There are also acoustic performances on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday starting at 7pm. (Budi Iskandar)

As for the main course, Gusto has a good combination of local favorites and Western dishes. Our order of Nasi Goreng Seafood (60k) was as hearty as ever; the rice is deliciously mixed with beansprouts for a little texture, seafood, and served with pickles and prawn crackers on the side. For a Western touch, the Aglio Olio Prawn Pasta (80k) is worth a try. The wonderfully al www.beatmag.com

MADAM

GUAT A neat find in the North side of town.

P

antai Indah Kapuk or PIK has become one of the go to places for dining. Located in the Northern part of Jakarta, PIK has just about every type of food (for any budget) there is. There are a few clusters of eateries throughout the whole PIK area, but recently we found a nice little restaurant a wee bit off the main restaurant drag. We heard about Madam Guat from some friends who go to PIK quite frequently. Being from the South of Jakarta, a trip to PIK is thankfully now a whole lot easier with the toll road access. So we headed there recently to check it out. Madam Guat is a part of the legendary Laksa Medan Nyonya Guat. Well-known for its Medanese (North Sumatran) comfort food, the Laksa Medan Nyonya Guat restaurant in North Jakarta has been serving hungry patrons for about three decades. Madam Guat, however, is a slightly modern take on the hearty fare, and then some. Located on Jalan Elang Laut, PIK, Madam Guat has two floors. The first floor looks like any neighborhood eatery. The cafeteria setting gives a community feel about the place. But on the second floor, you’ll find a totally different vibe. There’s a more lounge-y ambiance. It’s the kind

of place to chill and enjoy your drink. But, you can still have your meal as well. And there’s nice view of a creek to boot. Sit at the balcony upstairs on a nice afternoon or balmy evening and get a different sensation at Madam Guat. Okay, on to the food. The two main favorites here are the LaksaIkan (40k). Using sardines, this is a slightly different take on the Melayu favorite. Uniquely tasty. Another winner here is a flavorsome noodle dish called Emie (35k). The broth is something else. De-lish! And for a bit more kick, try the Mie Tomat Pedas (28k) with its tangy and spicy zest. To accompany your meal, you can have the ubiquitous Sate Ayam (28k), or chicken satay with peanut sauce. But why don’t you try the cockles-on-a-stick that is Sate Kerang (23k).

The cockles are very nicely marinated and definitely taste great. Madam Guat is also known for its wonderful Bika Ambon cake for you to eat in or take away. But for dessert, you can’t go much wrong with the favorites, Serabi (20k) and Rujak (25k). The Medanese-inspired drinks are also worth a try; go for the Es Kietna (20k) or Es Markisa (20k). Be it to dine on the wonderful dishes or to enjoy the lounge vibe upstairs, Madam Guat is a solid addition to what PIK has to offer. There are plenty of North Sumatran favorites to savor here, a second visit could be on the cards in the near future. (Budi Iskandar)

rtOtel Thamrin Jakarta is an art-inspired hotel opened just a little over two years ago. Located right next to Sarinah Thamrin, the hotel has become the it place for many of Jakarta’s hip crowd. From the striking façade to the swanky interior, you’ll find cool artworks aplenty. Usually when people talk about ArtOtel Thamrin, most of them mention BART or the Bar At the RoofTop. It’s a hip and happening place to mingle with a tipple or two, located up on the seventh floor of the hotel. But this time, we are going to talk about the eatery at ArtOtel Thamrin called ROCA, or Restaurant Of Contemporary Art. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel. It is open 24 hours, so you can have a meal here any time of day; making it a great place for a post-clubbing nosh-up before heading home. The menu itself is quite extensive, and well enough to cover most tastes, mainly with its Western and Asian fares. Breakfast items

You can refresh yourself with mocktails like the Hospital Hater or the Pretty Cinderella (49k, respectively), or go with the more potent Mojito (90k) or Sangria (148k) should you feel like it. The coffee, by the way, is excellent here, courtesy of the good people of Common Grounds.

include Scrambled Eggs with Truffle Essence (55k) and the Croque Monsieur (72k). While the Fresh Mushroom Cream Soup (48k) or Spicy Asian Salad With Prawn (62k) are scrumptious starters. The clear-cut favorite here, though, is the Nasi Goreng Kemangi Teri (65k). Full of wonderful herbs and spices, it’s an explosion of flavors that elevate this fried rice dish to a whole new level! Not to be outdone, the Crab Garlic Noodles (98k) is another tasty offering from ROCA. The soft shell crab nicely complemented the springy noodle. We also like the Crispy Seared Norwegian Salmon (115k), served with a side salad, sautéed vegetables, and some fries. The crunchy salmon skin is just splendid. There are also a good selection of sandwiches, burgers, and pastas for you to enjoy as well. As for dessert, the Banana Foster (49k) is our top choice. Served in a small jar, the banana slices are mixed with puff pastry, caramel sauce, and vanilla ice cream. Yumm-o!

The restaurant just recently launched its Brunch Menu. From lighter fare like the Tuna Nicoise Salad (59k) to the more filling Brunch Burger (110k) and other dishes in between, the brunch is a great way to spend your weekend. So, stop by ROCA on Saturday or Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. Whether you’re enjoying the whimsical artwork of the interior over drinks or savoring the delectable dishes, make sure that ROCA is your destination soon. PS: Even the smoking area looks cool.
