Arkarna on Indonesia

In the last year, UK band Arkarna became almost a household name in Indonesia. Ollie Jacobs (above left), founder of the group and recent addition, guitarist Matt Hart (above right), are best buddies with President Jokowi, supporting him through his election campaign and then playing live at Jokowi’s inauguration ceremony at Monas in central Jakarta last November. The band played an Indonesian song at the event called ‘Kebyar - Kebyar’ which enamored them with the 250.000 people in attendance and the Indonesia public watching on TV. They have also been great supporters of an anti-drug campaign throughout Indonesia called Love Indonesia, Hate Drugs, which has received great traction in the younger Indonesian community. So much so that Matt was recently proclaimed a prince by His Royal Highness Maharaja Kutai Mulawarman for his work on the anti-drug front. TBJ spoke with Ollie and Matt, who were in completely different places at the time.

22

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE What’s outside your window right now? Ollie - “Well right now I’m sitting in my London recording studio looking up at the sky because all my windows face up haha.” Matt - “And I’m overlooking the busy Monday morning traffic of Jakarta from my balcony. There’s a nice view of Pancoran from here to admire while I drink my cup of tea!” Arkarna have a long history in Indonesia. I remember the band playing at Hard Rock Cafe in Bali in 2001 and many times since all over the country. Add to that your recent exploits here, the question begs, how did this strong connection with Indonesia come about? Ollie - “It just happened organically and naturally, it wasn’t planned, but I suppose that’s how the best relationships start” Matt - “Yeah there’s certainly a kind of magic here. It’s like the laws of attraction have always been particularly kind to us and we’re forever grateful for all the love and support we continue to receive from everyone here in Indonesia. It’s extremely humbling.” What do you like most about Indonesia? Ollie - “Definitely the people! Lovely, friendly, warm and welcoming...”

Matt - “I love the culture, there’s such a strong sense of tradition here and we don’t really have much of that in the UK which is sad. I even tried kerokan (coin scratching on the back) the other day for the first time. That was errrr, interesting! Haha.” How did your campaign #Love Indonesia, Hate Drugs begin? And what do you do to help the cause? Matt - “I was visiting drug rehabilitation centres in Sumatra earlier this year. It shocked and saddened me to see about 90% of everyone there was between the ages of 10-16. The drug dealers in Indonesia are incredibly manipulative and lace food, drink, even sweets with drugs like heroin to get the children addicted as early as possible. I wrote about my experience and my feelings on Facebook and the post just unexpectedly went viral. In just a few hours it had already been shared over 10,000 times and the hashtag I created #LoveIndonesiaHateDrugs became a world wide trending topic. It was around the time of the Bali 9 media story so it was very refreshing for me to see such an overwhelmingly positive related response at a time when so much negativity was being aimed towards Indonesia for carrying out the executions. Since then we’ve been visiting schools all across Indonesia raising awareness to the dangers of drugs and helping to protect Indonesia’s next generation. We even

recorded over 1000 Indonesian school children singing for our latest record.” Yeah, you guys released the Indonesian single ‘Kebyar Kebyar’ recently. What’s the story behind that track? Ollie - “When we played at the president’s inauguration last year we really wanted to sing a song in Indonesian, when we heard “Kebyar Kebyar” we were instantly drawn to the simplicity and power of the melody. And when we saw the crowd’s response at Monas we knew we had to record a full studio version.” You have been touring and promoting your music a lot over the past couple of months. Has that mainly been in Indonesia or somewhere else too? Matt - “I think it’s fair to say we’ve been mainly focusing in Indonesia most recently, but as Ollie says it was never something we had intentionally planned. I believe everything happens for a reason, the universe reaches out to you sometimes and you can either chose to embrace it or ignore it. We choose to embrace and simply try to return the love we receive as much as possible. It’s been a truly wonderful journey so far and it seems the rabbit hole just keeps going deeper.”

www.beatmag.com

23

FEATURE

Would you say Arkarna is now based in Indonesia? Ollie - “No, I wouldn’t say that at all. We’re Londoners born and bred, it’s just our musical roller coaster has lead us here right now and we’re just enjoying the ride. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, it’s a lot of going back and forth between Indonesia and the UK but that’s ok, we’re used to travelling and touring anyway so for us it’s no big deal!”

24

www.beatmag.com

And how is it being a foreign band playing regularly in Indonesia? Ups and downs? Ollie - “Every roller coaster inevitably has its ups and downs but we are very fortunate that ours are mostly all ups. Me and Matt are both very enthusiastic people, we’ve always focused on the positives rather than linger on obstacles. It’s more productive that way and it keeps us focused on being creative.”

Any big plans for Arkarna over the next year? Matt - “Oh yes of course! We’re always thinking one step ahead but it’s important to stay grounded and focus in the present at the same time. There’s a lot of really exciting things happening for us at the moment and very soon we’ll be able to reveal all the juicy details, just not quite yet! It’s all incredibly positive and that’s the main thing, they say good things come to those who wait, right?”

How did the collaboration in Ubud between the two of you come together? I have a composition on my album dedicated to John, the title is Duaji Guruji. Because of the delay on the grand opening of my guitar museum (www.museumgitarku. com) I decided to do a “Road to the Museum Concert”.

The Museum Gitarku Dewa Budjana (Dewa Budjana’s Guitar Museum) will be opening soon. Beyond being your own legacy to the music industry of Bali and Indonesia and to the history of the guitar, what else does it mean to you and when will it be finished? The museum construction is still in progress and it will be ready in a couple of years. The museum is part of my life and my musical journey.

What does Duaji Guruji mean? Duaji is how people called me in Balinese and means someone who’s become a father to their children, while Guruji means a guru, a teacher, a role model. Who are the 4th Dimension? 4th Dimension is John’s latest project. They are: Ranjit Barot, Garry Husband and Etiene Mbappe.

And what will the museum consist of when it does open? Apart from mine and other people’s guitar collections, there will be a Gitarku Festival, a recording studio and a recital room, where we will hold public performances. There will be many interesting events coming up in the future. Duaji Guruji: October 18, Arma Ubud, Ubud, Bali.

CLASSICAL

E x periencing T he G erman S ensation By Erza S.T. Since the start of classical music and opera in its golden age from the 17th to early 20th century, Germans have been known for their important role in its making. Big composer names such as Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Brahms, Schumann, Strauss, Wagner, Gluck, Mendelssohn to Carl Orff and Hans Zimmer are all Germans that have given

the classical music and opera world a color of its own. This year, Indonesia and Germany celebrates 64 years of diplomatic relations, and the German Embassy in collaboration with Ekonid is once again organizing the “Jermanfest. Prepare yourselves, classical music lovers, as German melodies will be all around for the whole month.

CLASSICAL

Established in 2011, this festival (formerly named JERIN) was initiated to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Indonesia’s diplomatic relationship with Germany. Since then, the festival happens every two years with 2013 being the last one. This year, Jemanfest is back with various events from culture, economy, music, art, sports, science, politics, film, literature, theater, dance and education. One of the interesting music programs is the upcoming “Interactive Choir Concert by Rundfunkchor Berlin”. Regarded as one of the best choirs in the world, this award-winning Berlin based choir is also known as the oldest radio choir that has won three Grammy Awards and two ECHO classic awards in 2009. With 63 permanent singers, the Rundfunkchor stages around 60 concerts annually and impressed the audiences around the world with its distinctive sound quality that combines fluidity, warmth and precision. For their first performance in Indonesia, Rundfunkchor Berlin will be coming with 25 singers and lead by the conductor: Simon Halsey. As part of the ‘German Season’, the choir has quite an ambitious program featuring works from Schutz to Schonberg. Not only that, but they will also collaborate with three of our best choirs: Paragita Choir of Universitas Indonesia (Jakarta), the Choir of Universitas Padjadjaran (Bandung), and the Deum Voice Choir (Medan) under guidance of conductor Simon Halsey for major performances in Jakarta, Bandung and Medan. Goethe Institut as the organizer of these concerts also informed

The Beat Jakarta that there will be a special segment in the program where the audience is invited to accompany the choir performance. Aula Simfonia Jakarta program this month also added the works from two of Germany’s famous composers: Brahms and Beethoven. Though it is not a new move from Aula Simfonia Jakarta (they did a similar concert in 2013 with same two composers), this year they decided to do the Piano Concert no. 1 from Brahms and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Another familiar yet talented face, pianist ShuWen Chuang from Taiwan is also returning to perform in this concert (she was the solo pianist in 2013 concert as well). Lead by Dr. Stephen Tong as the conductor for Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, this concert is quite interesting for those of you who are looking for a more serious German sensation. Aula Simfonia Presents: Brahms & Beethoven 10 October 2015 starting from 17.00 onward Aula Simfonia Jakarta For more information: www.aulasimfoniajakarta.com Jerman Indonesia presents Rundfunkchor Berlin October 21 starting from 8pm onward Aula Simfonia Jakarta For more information: T. 021- 391 7467 or tiket@jermanfest.com

CD REVIEW

Ku De Ta Volume 8

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Dropped right in the middle of Bali’s high season, the eighth offering from KDT continues to distil the breezy, chic ambience of the eponymous Seminyak hotspot. There are many that attempt to cash in with just another half-arsed mixtape, but with Volume 8, KDT musical director Jim Breese has really nailed the formula. Billed as a representation of a ‘day in the life’ of Ku De Ta, Breese expertly curates and mixes together the perfect international compilation of soulful chill, sunset and disco beats. Opener “Métele” kicks off proceedings with a taste of the Balearics courtesy of NYC/Puerto Rican act Buscabulla, the honeyed vocals of Raquel Berrios the ideal compliment to a bit of afternoon beach lounging. Next up, “Stay Cool” finds its legitimate home on Volume 8, after an illegal bootleg remix of the track by Al Usher was sanctioned by the label who released the original 1983 classic by Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright. With its pure, jazz-tinged daytime vibes, it’s without doubt the standout track here. Hot on its heels, the percussive drive of Cameo Culture’s “Told You So” keeps up the perfect pacing – all hypnotic beats and old school jazz horn solos. Two more solid offerings from Aimes and

Lovebirds mark the close of the daytime session, before the stunning deep disco “Heartbeat Speed” and drives things more towards the evening vibe. “Roly Poly” takes matters further with an infectious beat that subtly yet assuredly moves towards its pulsing conclusion. The sparse house of “Do You Feel The Same” by Hercules & Love Affair is perhaps the first hiccup in an otherwise spot-on track listing, with an over repetitive modulated hook and uninspiring vocal track unfortunately diffusing the momentum created by the previous few tracks – something which is compounded by the misplaced “La Taza De Oro”. Bearing in mind that this is supposed to be a day in the life of KDT, the lazy horns and beachy ambience would have worked better had it been placed much earlier in the track ordering. The final third of Volume 8 takes in the day’s peak (“You Can’t Stop Me”, “Falling”), before the leisurely “Run Slowly” & “Got This Thing” wind things up before last orders at the bar. An excellent addition to Ku De Ta’s soundtrack series, let’s hope Mr. Breese keeps up the pace for Volume 9. Dan Ashcroft.

n outfit usually has certain design, material and characteristics. And by its function, a dress is normally worn by women for certain occasions. However, do you know that there is a dress designed to protect the wearers from the bad guys?

The fierce design of this dress has caught the attention of many fashion lovers in the world. Supporting its initial mission, this dress features a corset with black LED lights that would blink when detecting a danger. On the shoulder area of the dress, the designer also puts the framework of spider legs that is completed with a censor to help the dress ‘interact’ with the surrounding environment. Additionally, this sophisticated dress can also measure distance, as well as the stress level of the wearer through another sensor embedded in.

It is the Dutch designer, Anouk Wipprecht, who has successfully combined fashion and technology by creating an incredible masterpiece. In the beginning of 2015, the designer perfected her special creation called Spider Dress which she created in 2012. The upgraded version was named Spider Dress 2.0, featuring structures that were produced through 3D printers.

The advance features are created by Intel Edison which is used as the main component that helps the censoring and mechanical works of the dress. Integrated seamlessly, this technology is now so useful to help protect the women from bad things that could approach them anytime, fashioned in a unique design that would be loved by them.

inter is coming! Be ready to be the lady of the winter as we bring you the five top trends from the recent Autumn/Winter 2016 fashion weeks.

www.beatmag.com

STYLE Wraps and Layers As seen in the collections of Berenica Czarnota and Janette Klein, the blue, black and grey oversized wraps looked mesmerizing when paired with cowls and funnel necklines. From Chatty’s collection, the printed neoprene wraps and funnel jackets also added a touch of colours into the looks. These warm clothes are very reliable during winter, especially for those concerned with being in style. Fashion Decade Comebacks Three most-fashionable decades were the inspirations for next collections. The lively bohemian vibes of 70s, bright colours of 80s and edgy silhouettes of 90s were clearly evident in Eva Minge’s floral designs, Zhang Yuhao’s coats and 303 Avenue’s long checked clothes during Shanghai Fashion Week. These preppy warm clothes are ready to make this winter brighter. Furry and Fringy The luxurious look of fur was still seen as the winter staple this season. Fringe details were also apparent in this year’s collection, as seen in SIIJII’s furry coats, Maria Lafuente’s fringy white dresses and Sun Tomorrow Collection’s thick jackets. Fur and fringe are indeed two elements that can transform the ordinary winter looks to be stylish and chic. Sparkles and Shine Under the bright lights, the sparkling collections shimmered the runways. Vero Diaz and Mon Cheri took the spotlight by presenting the glittered looks and beautiful dresses. Mixing Italian aesthetics in the collection, Instituto Marangoni presented the shimmering details through glittered fabrics. This season again proves that the love for glittery and shiny items never goes out of style. Leather The runways showed that leather is perfect for those who want to look edgy during winter. Missy Skins by Natasha Ivachoff presented modern looks with wrapped dress coats, skirts and cropped. The leather was also utilized by Kelly Bui on her neo-Victorian, monochromatic collection. Dominating the season, leather is indeed a perfect material to make summer looks more fabulous. www.beatmag.com

STYLE Playful Overalls The playful ripped overalls can look edgy when paired with a pair of black boots. You can also match it with backpack and black sunglasses for a more impressive look. Rock Bohemian For a fusion style of rock and bohemian, pair black T-shirt with a floral kimono. This chic combination also shows you that breaking a fashion rule is not always wrong. Crop Top Crop tops will never be boring and outdated, and go really well with anything. For a laidback look, you may want to pair it with either denim hot pants or printed pants. Skin Tight Dress This body-fitting item is perfect for those who love to dress practicably. Skin tight dress can emphasize your body silhouette, and will go really well with a pair of sneakers for a sporty look. Leather Mini Skirt Leather is a material loved by the fashion lovers, while the leather items are indeed the ‘must-have’ by many. For instance, this leather mini skirt will look cute on you when paired with the sweater. For a fiercer look, you can also pair the bright-coloured leather top with ripped hot pants.

FOOD

FOOD The Indian dishes here are wonderful, too. With a significant number of Indian/South Asian residents at the apartments here; and it makes sense that Casadina wants to cater to them. We highly recommend the well-marinated roasted Chicken Tikka Masala (68k), and the tasty Grilled Chicken And Mushroom Tandoori (65k); chicken marinated in aromatic tandoori spices. Both very flavorsome, we just savored them all in no time flat. Speaking of flat, the Naan or Indian flat bread is just the perfect partner for both dishes. On the more Pan-Asian side of the menu, there are plenty of Indonesian favorites, but the Burmese Seafood Crispy Noodle (65k) is worth a try as well. Casadina Kitchen & Bakery is a cute little restaurant in the Kuningan area tucked away in a corner underneath Tower 17 in Taman Rasuna Residence. Opened in July last year, the place has become a favorite for many of the apartment occupants and beyond. During our lunch hour visit, we saw some parents chatting over coffee while waiting for their toddlers to finish school that day, a small group of ladies doing their arisan, and a couple of people working on their laptops. The setting is rather interesting; the eatery is located right next to an unused (but filled) swimming pool. The whole area is sheltered from the apartment façade, giving an impression that you’re in a semi-hidden restaurant. The interior is dominated by pale-colored wood on the paneling and furniture, with plenty of natural light coming in from the windows. Very homey. Casadina has quite an extensive menu for a small place. The favored dishes here are the Italian and Indian ones. There are plenty of pizzas to choose from, from the simple, cheesy Margherita Pizza (55k) to the meaty Carnevalle Pizza (70k), topped with smoked beef, beef bacon, and grilled chicken! But we fell totally in love with one pasta dish, the Verde Tagliatelle Chicken (58k). The homemade tagliatelle pasta is smothered with creamy pesto sauce, and topped with grilled chicken, and mushroom. Delizioso!

Meat lovers can rejoice; you can have your Sirloin, Rib Eye, BBQ Ribs, all the way to Chicken Cordon Bleu and Salmon or Tuna Steak. We opted for the Bisteca Sweet Balsamico Sauce (145k); the sweetish sauce is definitely interesting. Another must-try here are the healthy ‘Slushes’ (That’s how they call the smoothies). The Green Lush (35k) is a mix of bok choy, pineapple, and apple, while the Get Skinny (35k) blends carrot, apple, guava, papaya, and lemon. Our personal favorite, though, is the purple Dragon Snap (35k) a combo of dragon fruit, strawberry, and calamansi lime. And Casadina serves a mean breakfast, too! So, from morning to evening, Casadina can be a good option for you when you’re in the Kuningan area. (Budi Iskandar)

FOOD FIGHTERS Bringing the cool factor back to Blok M.

52

www.beatmag.com

FOOD how about munching on their Mushroom Burger (35k) as well? The grilled Portobello mushroom is well seasoned with herbs, topped with egg and feta cheese, and served on a brioche bun with sriracha mayo. Yum!

The Blok M area in South Jakarta was the hip place in the 80s and part of the 90s for Jakarta’s young people. Over the years though, the enjoyment aspect has fairly dropped. But recently, there’s a place that’s trying to add a certain vigor to the culinary scene in the area. There’s been an exodus of some sort of young food entrepreneurs from Pasar Santa to Blok M. Some relocated, some added their outlets. Food Fighters is a food court next to Fave Hotel, opposite Blok M Square mall. It has about a dozen outlets, and the ambiance is kept simple, but accented with retro-style pixelated graffiti drawings here and there. The people of ABCD Coffee in Pasar Santa brings you a good caffeine buzz with Kopi Pasar. And we all know the wonderful noodle dishes of Mie Chino, but try their new, tasty Vietnamese-style Beef or Chicken Banh Mi (30k each). Mexican food fanatics have been flocking to Papricano for their Taco (30k) and Burrito (40k) fix. At Food Fighters, they’re teaming up with Sloppy Bro. The Sloppy Joe is the signature, of course, but do give their Texas BBQ Sandwich (30k, respectively) a go. The 12-hour smoked brisket in the sandwich is superb! Try the handcut fried chips, too. For healthier options, Judas Kitchen is a good choice. The juices and smoothies are very refreshing, just get the Infused Water (20k) or the Coconut Rose Water (25k). While you at it,

Now, Sate Bumbu Oma is one of the firm favorites at Pasar Santa. But now they’ve relocated to Food Fighters with a new name and a fresh start as Oma’s Kitchen. Taking satay to a new level, their unique-tasting, old-Grandma-recipe sauce has gained a somewhat cult status among foodies! The chicken or lamb goes very nicely with it, be it as satay (chicken 33k, lamb 43k) or as a rice bowl dish (chicken 25k, lamb 35k). The Bruine Bonen or red bean soup (13k small, 28 large) and Ice Carica Fruit (20k) drink are perfect accompaniments. Another thing you shouldn’t miss at Oma’s Kitchen stall are the scrumptious desserts, courtesy of MeMom Snacks. The puddings like Green Tea (8k), Strawberry Nesquik, JellOreo, or Choco KitKat (12k, respectively) are to die for! But the Milo Lego (18k) will definitely delight your inner kid self! And for a rather dramatic sweet offering from Food Fighters, have a Kaki Goori Blue (35k); a cool cotton candy and shaved ice combo. This is definitely a solid addition to Blok M. With still a number of stalls to try at Food Fighters, maybe we’ll see you there soon? (Budi Iskandar)

Think about it - all that data your email, pictures from your kid’s birthday party, corporate spreadsheets with sensitive information - can be picked up and copied and returned before you even notice it missing. You want to have this data handy, but handy for you and not for that scumbag down the hall with the sticky fingers. $49.99 www.thinkgeek.com

So these almost didn’t make it on to the site, because they’re so awesome we wanted to keep the entire shipment all for ourselves. But there’s no need to go crazy, right? Well, not yet. Pay homage to the Great Old Ones by giving your offering to this Cthulhu Gargoyle Vinyl Bank. Ready to hold all your Innsmouth gold, your coins forged from Tulumetal, or boring standard currency, he hunches on his pedestal at around 10” tall. We’re not sure what the pedestal says; we dare not read it. Also? Personally, we’re not using this as a bank. We haven’t decided if he’s going to end up watching over our bookshelf or outside on our covered porch after we hit him with a protective coat of shellac. Either one seems a pretty sweet location for our favorite enslaver of worlds. $19.99 www.thinkgeek.com
