It’s that time of year when we begin taking stock of the past year and looking forward to the New Year to come. For me personally it was a rather up and down year with a severe bout of dengue – for the second time – and other less than ideal moments, but also mixed with some good times. Travelling to Vietnam for the first time was a fun experience

Aldo Santuri speaks about making it or not in the music industry

FEATURE

W

e are speaking with Aldo Santuri about the local music industry and what bands have to do to make it nowadays. Aldo is now the Indonesia Country Manager for Believe Digital, an online music distributor, but has been involved in the music industry for years.

the content owners have to think smarter to create revenue from audio and video assets. Physical product still has a market in Indonesia but no longer in big quantities and the packaging or format should tease niche communities who are still music maniacs.

TBJ: Tell me about you and your position in the music industry first. Aldo Sianturi: I’m a music business guy and have been involved for more than 20 years already. I started as a musician, then audio engineer, music journalist, label assistant, strategic & marketing director, music business lecturer, label owner and currently work for a digital music distributor. I distribute and monetise music assets from Indonesia to all over the world.

The internet has obviously had a profound effect on the rock music business and as you say people are still trying to figure out what to do with it, but are there positives coming from it? Yes it’s a discovery time for music. People will always benefit from the internet.

Were you playing in bands? How and why did you get involved in the first place? I played with different bands at the same time. The goal was purely for fun. The 90s era was different. And how did you make the move into the music business? When I joined Universal Music Indonesia in 1999, I decided to not continue my music playing career. I learned about the 101 of music business as I handled the international division. With all the knowledge I had, I really wanted to help my music friends in Indonesia. Then I became a direct and indirect advisor for musicians. So how is the music business now compared to then? Totally different. What I call disruptive innovation has attacked the music industry. Physical product is now in a sunset period as the world is shifting to digital products now, either buying it or streaming it through platforms. This is the era where all

Also electronic music must have had an impact on the whole rock star, rock music scene. How do you see electronic music effecting things? Electronic music is the key driver to the mass population. It has glued people’s interest in the wider ecosystem. So what are musicians doing now to get their music known? First of all they have to take extra care with their production such as songwriting, production exploration and recording techniques. This is the first important step that needs to be taken, to care brilliantly. Quality music has to be the result. There are benefits from the internet for being heard but now there are more musicians trying to stand out, right? So, as a record company, how do you now try to get your bands into the public’s view? Currently to stand out amongst all musicians, they should endure a long journey. They have to push their creativity harder in a way to present their ethics, values and message, which should be clean and clear to the market. As a record company we have to have a clear roadmap to tap

FEATURE

their music and put their profile into the right direction. Content is always king but the distribution is queen. The label is positioned as the middle man. They curate the road map for the music owner. It’s not the era for a label to sign musicians based on a lifetime deal and the scope of the deal now expands to different music business models. What are those business models? The newest business model is to work with a licensor who plays their music at a retail level. If they have a big number of fans, they could do a jointventure for merchandise release. How about newcomers, how do they stand out from the pack? For newcomers, the right way is to focus on live performances. They should be able to engage people through their sound, their music and their profile while they create engagement through YouTube and social media accounts. They have to have a strong digital footprint and translate it to various stages and performances.

24

www.beatmag.com

Could bands become popular today without social media? They could if their music is targeted to grassroots and non-internet users. Usually their source of entertainment is only TV. Just expose them to Dahsyat. Dahsyat? Yes artificial music programs on SCTV or RCTI. I suppose in the end it’s always about hard work and playing live, right? But it’s not enough. But as far as record sales being low nowadays they have to play live to make any money, correct? Yes, it’s the first revenue stream nowadays. So anything you want to talk about to our friends out there, Aldo? I would like to say all musicians should manage their expectations and aspirations in becoming a go-public or worldwide act. It’s artificial. Be realistic and focus on your local ecosystem.

CLASSICAL

W

elcome to the last classical review in 2015! It is actually hard to belief that I am already writing the December preview again and surprisingly, I haven’t found any Christmas concerts being announced! Well, not to worry as we still have other interesting classical concerts to fill your December calendar.

26

www.beatmag.com

Every now and then during my time writing classical music previews, I encounter some interesting and unusual concerts that excite me. One of these unusual affairs is coming from Aula Simfonia Jakarta that is planning a children’s concert this coming December. Under title of ‘Melody & Movement’, Aula Simfonia Jakarta has

CLASSICAL quite an interesting program for the children to see classical music including Mozart’s highlight on Magic Flute opera, Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance no. 8, Chopin’s Polonaise ‘Heroic’, and many other works from notable composers such as Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Holst and Albeniz. The performers composition also changes for this concert. Three talented lady conductors: Indah Lestari Hertanto, Malvinas and Elsa Pardosi will take over the baton and lead an array of young musicians from Jakarta Christian Youth Orchestra, Jakarta Oratorio Society Youth Choir, Jakarta Oratorio Society Children Choir, GRII Choir and JOSCC Ringers. Accompanied by accomplished musician as Djoenaidi Laudoe (guitar) and few talented young soloists such as Gloria Teo (piano), Robert/Jonathan Mintargo (piano) with Vincent and Hansen Wiguna (piano) – this concert is surely interesting to see. From one fun concert for children, we go to another fun concert from Jakarta Concert Orchestra and Batavia Madrigal Singers who under the baton of Avip Priatna will present the city with their latest concert: ‘Hollywood in Jakarta’ featuring famous classical music pieces used as movie soundtracks. When this article was written, there were still not a lot of information about the program or the soloists. However, I have my trust on Avip who always brings us great performances over his career. On the Christmas note, you might not want to miss the annual Christmas Eve mass at the Cathedral that is just simply beautiful. Still related, Ananda Sukarlan is also releasing his first Christmas album under title: A Virtuosic Christmas

that has some classic Christmas tunes variations as well as his own compositions within the theme. Last but not least, I would just like to thank all of you who have been reading this preview in our monthly The Beat Jakarta. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year 2016! CD REVIEW Wonderful

FOALS

Wow

What Went Down

Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

It’s round four for the Oxford indie quartet, and Foals finally deliver the knockout punch they’ve been dangling since 2012’s Holy Fire. The secret, it seems, is riffs. Whopping great room-filling, eyeball-rattling, ear-bleeding riffs. The kind that front man Yannis Philippakis & co. toyed with on “Inhaler” – arguably their first solid excursion away from earnest indie and into stadium rock territory. The bombastic title track kicks things off in assured fashion, a heightened sense of confidence and cockiness shining immediately through - Philippakis shouting “I buried my heart in a hole in the ground” over opening power chords before the whole thing escalates into a throbbing air-guitar meltdown. “Snake Oil” and “Night Swimmers” also jump right in at the deep end as the kind of songs you open (or close) a live set with – brutish guitar assaults with all the amps cranked hard to the right. However, just like “Inhaler” with its quiet\LOUD\quiet dynamic, Foals are evidently aware that big riffs work best when surrounded by a brooding buildup or ecstatic comedown. Filling in the gaps between the head-banging moments, and providing the more melodic

segments of the album come tracks like “Give it All” and the gorgeous “London Thunder” – beautiful, shimmering works that provide the necessary breathing spaces between the other full-tilt numbers. The majority of the other tracks act as a kind of microcosm of the album as a whole, again adhering to the build up & release approach, best seen on “Mountain at My Gates” - the bouncy opening guitar noodling eventually drowned out by its thunderous conclusion. Super-groovy “Birch Tree” is another highpoint, and proves that they haven’t completely forgotten how to really craft a tune as opposed to hammering out power chords. Whereas Total Life Forever and Holy Fire both suffered from a few too many similar-sounding tracks, here every song has its own clear identity. In short, What Went Down is their most consistent and enjoyable work to date, and will no doubt cement their ascension from student favourites playing sweaty gigs in tiny clubs, to genuine stadium-filling headliners. In its special campaign this year, H&M presents Katy Perry as the model for the ads of its latest holiday collection, launched worldwide on November 23. In the video ad, Katy dresses up as a Christmas fairy who later brings to life a cast of characters, from elves, lifesized gingerbread men, to giant teddy bears. The ad also features Katy’s first-ever Christmas track titled “Every Day is a Holiday”, written by the singer and produced by Duke Dumont. Besides being a fairy, the pop princess also appears with different looks, donning some pieces from the collection which combines the glam and joy of winter. It includes a bright red dress, a tuxedo with flyaway sleeves, and a T-shirt with bowshaped sequins. “H&M has been a part of the evolution of my personal style since I was 13. It was when I would start to incorporate fun, affordable H&M pieces into my vintage wardrobe,” said Katy.

Types of Body

O

ne type of body treatment product, the exfoliator, may have sounded familiar among the ladies. In Indonesia itself, there are various types of body exfoliators which are well-known as beauty tools of royal princesses.

Exfoliator

Nevertheless, in this modern era, these exfoliator products have been developing to be more diverse, from the ones that have practical cleansing formulas, to those that contain anti-aging formulas for skin.

Need to know more? Check the differences here!

Scrubs This is probably the most renowned among all existing exfoliator products. It has paste-like texture, completed with the fine granules which are able to lift the dead skin cells. Lulur is one of those traditional Indonesian exfoliator products that contains a scrubbing element in it. Peelings This product also contains scrubbing granules in it, with the only difference lying in its texture which is finer and smoother. It is usually produced in the forms of gel and cream, and is applied by rubbing it gently on the skin, with a circular motion to remove the dead skin cells. Balinese lulur is one of the traditional peeling products that can be easily found in the market. It is generally more favoured as it is easier to use, compared to other exfoliator products. Sea Salts This product normally has bigger granules and contains sea salt which is great to smoothen skin. However, many people do not prefer this exfoliator due to its rough texture, although it is actually believed to be more effective in lifting the dead skin cells. This product is available widely in the market, and can also be homemade with simple ingredients. www.beatmag.com

STYLE Sunscreen Gloomy days are not the reason to skip this item. It is due to the fact that the sun always shines all the time, bringing out the UV rays that are able to pass through the clouds. During the wet days, there is indeed a little chance of getting sunburned. However, this also cannot be ignored as UV rays do not only burn the skin, but also cause dark spots on face. For women living in the tropics, makeup products that contain SPF 50 are highly recommended, including the sunscreen. For practical use, try Privacy UV Face Mist SPF 50+ PA++++ which is available in the form of spray. Moisturizing Facial Mist Cooler weather tends to make skin drier. If facial mist is normally utilized to freshen skin during the warm days, it can also function as moisturizer during the rainy days. As the air can easily ruin the makeup, choose moisturizing facial mist that can be used before and after makeup applications. For this purpose, try SK-II PITERA Mid-Day Miracle Essence which can moisturize skin instantly. Hand and Heel Cream In addition to face skin, it is also important to treat the body skin. Bringing along hand and body lotion would surely be very troublesome due to its packaging size. Therefore, opt for hand and heel cream instead. Apply this cream on both hands and legs as these two body parts can easily be exposed to the air. Furthermore, there is now available the hand and heel cream that is not only used to moisturize, but also as fragrance. For soft and sweet-scented skin, try L’Occitane Cherry Blossom Hand Cream which has a pleasant cherry blossom aroma. Now, you don’t need to worry about the weather? With these three products as your ammunitions, we are sure you’ll be ready rock the rainy days!

HOLY SMOKES Calling all carnivores!

W

elcome to Holy Smokes, pard’ner! For quite some time, this Texas-inspired barbecue joint has captured the hearts and appetites of many foodies. Opened this past July, Holy Smokes is the brainchild of chef/ owner Albert Wijaya. The restaurant is part of Ersons Food, which is also responsible for bringing The Holy Crab to hungry Jakartans. The interior has a simple down home charm. There’s no Texas overkill on the décor. The place is very cozy and casual. The food is the real star here, namely the copious amount of meat smoked on site from six to 18 hours. Just like the slogan on the wall says, “We smoke ‘em low ‘n’ slow”… You can start your meal with scrumptious BBQ Chicken

44

www.beatmag.com

FOOD Salad (55k), or go with the crispy Onion Straws (45k). This is a unique take on onion rings, where they ‘shred’ or ‘pulled’ the onion. A few onion straws are also used to garnish the main course, giving it a nice crunchy texture. The restaurant’s signature barbecue sauces are superb. There’s the Ol’ Smoky BBQ Sauce, and the Hot Smoky BBQ Sauce, both available on your table and add a certain zing to your meal. The menu offers the classics. You can order them as a ‘plate’ or a ‘dinner’. The former is just the meat with all its glory, and the latter comes with two side dishes. And they are: Baked Beans, Coleslaw, Green Salad, Mac and Cheese, Corn, Homecut Fries, Potato Salad. Our favorite: the Homecut Fries; medium-thick cut potato, some of the skin intact, fried to golden brown perfection! Okay, okay, let’s get to the mains! The ribs are kings here. The Southern Style Beef Ribs are smoked for four hours. You can have two ribs (155k plate, 185k dinner) or three ribs (233k, 263k) on your plate. Another rockin’ ribs meal here is the Texas Short Ribs. You can have the Australian (248k, 278k), or the US (380k, 410k) meat. The ribs may be shorter, but the meat is thicker than the aforementioned Southern Style ones. But man, you should try them both! Alternatively, the tasty BBQ Chicken can be an option. Choose from Half a Chicken (55k, 85k), or Whole (120k, 150k). Holy Smokes also whipped up a mean Smoky Beef Brisket. The brisket is smoked for 14 hours, and served sliced as Lean (88k plate, 118k dinner) or Fatty (108k, 138k) cuts. And you can take it up a notch with the Pulled Brisket Sandwich (88k). Should you feel like trying a couple of items, go for the Combos where you can have chicken and brisket, brisket and ribs, chicken and ribs in a single plate. And to wash all of them savories down, the refillable soft drinks are just perfect. Make Holy Smokes the place for you to satisfy your carnivorous cravings! (Budi Iskandar)

T

here’s always something new and interesting, dining-wise, in Jakarta. But somehow, Kemang keeps popping up as a favorite area for foodies in the capital city. Adding to the wealth of options in the area is Liberty.

Opened in July, this little eatery is a labor of love for Levi, the bass player of The Fly rock band. Other than music, cooking has always been a passion for him. His grandmother once owned a successful catering company, and he got the culinary bug from being around the business since an early age. Liberty has all the making of a very cozy, neighborhoodstyle restaurant. It is small but intimate. The kitchen is on the first floor along with some dining tables, and there is more space upstairs for your bigger groups. There are a lot of nice elements, like grandma’s old furniture and tile-decorated tables that exude warmth and

FOOD friendliness. Although still in its soft opening stage, the restaurant is ready to whip up a good number of delicious dishes. The Super Sandwiches are the specialties. Priced at 65k, you can choose from Sirloin Sliced Mushroom, Honey Mustard Chicken, Tuna Mayo, or (beef) Bacon Lettuce Tomato to put on the baguette bread. We love the Sirloin Sliced Mushroom; the Japanese-style roasted sesame sauce inside adds an extra oomph to the sandwich. Non-meat lovers won’t feel left out, as the Vegetarian Vaganza (55k) is making a statement as one of the favorites, too. Pasta aficionados will get a kick out of the Aglio E Olio (32.5k) or the Bolognaise Sausage (37.5k) dishes. Levi concocted a special tomato-based sauce for the latter, and also for his hearty pizzas. Our inner carnivores was content with our pick of the Meatza Pizza (68.825). You can also get the Margarita (55k), Pepperoni (58.025), Hawaiian, or even Vegetarian (57.750, respectively) pizzas, or go for the sweet Nutoblerone Pizza (75k). Also on the menu are salads like the Potato (20k), Caesar (34k), Cobb (36.975), or Liberty Special (31.2k). And don’t forget the much loved Butter Rice dishes, with Sirloin Sliced Beef or Fried Dory (60k each). Cool yourselves with the Red Velvet, Ginger Bread, or Green Tea Latte ice blends (35k each) or the Mango or Strawberry smoothies (37k each). But may we also suggest the wonderful coffee here. Levi also has a sweet spot for coffee, so much so that he made his own tasty blend called the Kula Shaker; a combo of two kinds of Gayo coffee plus the Mandailing beans. You can have your usual Espresso (18k), Cappuccino (28k), Americano (22.5), or Latte (30k), but you can also get a Manual Brew of Single Origin with a V60, Siphon, or Vietnam Drip (25k, respectively). Although smallish in space, Liberty is big on taste and passion, with a warm, homey hospitality. A delightful addition to the food scene in Kemang and environs! (Budi Iskandar) www.beatmag.com

ocieaty is the latest undertaking by the vanguard of Singapore’s dining scene, the Les Amis Group. With a strong commitment to quality in food, wine and service, the group also has ventured into other cuisine styles and concepts. Today, the group has 14 concepts and 24 outlets in Singapore and multiple overseas concepts, including in Indonesia, with more expansion plans in the pipeline. Located in prestigious Plaza Indonesia, Socieaty is an All-day-dining restaurant which features popular dishes from Les Amis Group Singapore’s brands, such as French eatery Bistro Du Vin,

FOOD

Italian trattoria La Strada, Spanish-themed La Taperia, and dainty bakery Tarte, along with new and exciting menus, crafted and curated especially for Indonesia. Recognizing the dynamic growth of the dining scene in Jakarta, Les Amis Group Indonesia was established earlier this year, and Socieaty opens its door. Here you’ll find a gathering of four core brands in one place, where you can enjoy different concepts being served in one restaurant. Socieaty also prides itself for using local ingredients as much as possible. Kudos for that decision! And as for the interior, the elegant but relaxed décor will put you at ease. The restaurant seems to be hitting all the right notes with Jakarta’s crowd. We visited the restaurant on a recent weekday for lunch, and it was packed! Our culinary journey began with the Momotaro Tomato (78k), a favorite starter from La Strada It’s a mélange of the freshest local tomato, with avocado, seaweed, and extra virgin olive oil. So simple, yet so scrumptious! Love it! The Spicy Quesadilla (148k) also made it to our table, and devoured in no time flat; tender chicken thigh marinated with Sriracha and tomato sauce blend, bell pepper, onion, pineapple, parsley, and mozzarella.

The Spaghetti Aglio Olio (65k) is another firm favorite here; al dente spaghetti with garlic, chili, and parsley. Add 35k if you want beef bacon or mushroom, or 40k for beef sausage or chicken. The Pan Fried Chicken (138k) is pleasantly flavorful; half chicken, smothered with Asian herbs and spices, served with potato, and garlic fine beans. Bistro du Vin’s own Ossobuco (275k) is a lambbased delight, but we took it up a notch with our order of the Braised Oxtail (280k). Served with fragrant rice, it is as hearty as can be. We did save some space for the fabulous Chocolate Orange Fondant (85k); the blend of chocolate and orange is just marvelous, and with the vanilla ice cream… Sublime! Another delicious dessert to try here is the Floating Island (65k); meringue drizzled with vanilla sauce and candied almond. Other than the coffee, the Jing Tea selection (42k each) can be a perfect coda to your meal. Try the Jade Sword Green Tea, Jasmine Silver Needle, or Lemongrass & Ginger. With a stylish setting and delectable dishes, Socieaty is pretty hard to resist. (Budi Iskandar) www.beatmag.com
