Synopsis The Wall Street Crash of 1929 hits the Aussie Veggie Trade hard. The affluent members of The Cauliflower Trust come up with a plan to woo the popular Council President, Old Dogsborough, by gifting him the shipyards where he first worked as a young man. Meanwhile, Arturo Ui bemoans his current fortunes as a down on his luck gangster. No-one takes him seriously. But when he gets wind that Old Dogsborough has been involved in a shady secret deal, he finds the opportunity he has been looking for. And who is going to stop him? Step by step, Arturo Ui’s path to success mirrors Adolf Hitler’s rise to power that kicked off World War Two and would kill approx. 85 million people. A warning to us all, indeed.

From the Director Thank you everyone for coming along to see this little gem of a play. I knew it would be topical but I could not have predicted how relevant it would be considering the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. I have learned so much while working on this show and I could not have more admiration for Bertolt Brecht. How brave he was! Writing this in an attempt to warn the world about the rise of fascism in Germany. Remember, this was written before the War actually kicked off. This play is the best of what I love about the theatre. I was honoured beyond belief to have been given permission by the Bertolt Brecht Trust to adapt this incredible work. My deepest thanks to my dear friend, Phil Lambert, for translating the script from the original German. What a favour! Such a big task and I am so grateful for everything I learned through his treatment of the text. I am so proud of this show and what we have all created together. Thank you also to my old mate, John ‘Goodo’ Goodson, who worked with me on all the original music. I have such incredibly talented friends. It has also been such a wonderful experience to have Badaidilaga Maftuh-Flynn home to work with the company again, particularly during the year of our 10th Anniversary of The Bridge Project, of which Badai is an OG Member. And finally, to my boofhead, you are brilliant.

x Terri
