Einleitung Im Juni 2017 organisierten das HAU Hebbel am Ufer und die Kuratorin Barbara Raes ein Projekt, das sich zwischen Künstler:innenresidenz und Forschungskolloquium bewegte und den Themen von Verlust und Ritual gewidmet war. Unter dem Titel “Unacknowledged Loss” teilte Raes über einen Zeitraum von drei Wochen ihre Erfahrungen als Kuratorin und Ritual-Zelebrantin mit einer Reihe Berliner Künstler:innen aus verschiedenen Sparten (Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Claudia Hill, Jassem Hindi, Jasmin İhraç, Ligia Lewis, Maria Scaroni, Mieko Suzuki, Oliver Zahn), die vom HAU eingeladen worden waren. Die Reaktionen sowohl der beteiligten Künstler:innen als auch des Publikums auf die abschließenden Präsentationen waren ausgesprochen positiv. Im Anschluss sind ein Buch mit Interviews, Bildern und Reportagen sowie ein Film über das Projekt erschienen. Schon damals entstand der Wunsch nach einer zweiten Auflage des Projekts, sodass das HAU nun für den Juni 2020 eine zweite Auflage mit neuen Künstler:innen angesetzt hatte.

Seit März 2020 ist unsere Lebensrealität durch die CoronaPandemie eine andere geworden, und auch “Unacknowledged Loss II” konnte nicht in der geplanten Form stattfinden. Allerdings haben die Themen des Projekts gerade unter den gegenwärtigen Umständen an Bedeutung gewonnen und verdienen es, dass ein Raum geschaffen wird, an dem wir uns mit ihnen auseinandersetzen können. Daher haben sich das HAU und Barbara Raes entschlossen, dem Projekt eine neue Form zu geben, in der es trotz allem durchgeführt werden kann. Und auch die neun Künstler:innen (Olympia Bukkakis, Dragana Bulut, Nuray Demir, Mmakgosi Kgabi, Ania Nowak, Falk Rößler,

Liz Rosenfeld, Colin Self, Joana Tischkau, Enis Turan), die bereits vor Längerem zur Teilnahme eingeladen worden waren, zeigten sich begeistert. Den gesamten Juni über beschäftigten sie sich mit der Frage von Trauer und Abschiedsritualen in der heutigen Zeit und wie an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Fürsorge und Ritual entsprechende Formen für die Zukunft entstehen können. Sie trafen Fachleute, die sich seit Langem mit diesen Themen beschäftigen, wie den Architekten Koen Van Synghel, die Heilpraktikerin Franziska Dieterich, die Bestatter:innen Uller und Lea Gscheidel sowie die Künstler:innen Claudia Hill, Jorge Leon und Melih Gençboyaci.

Als Ausgangspunkt der Reise diente das unbehagliche Gefühl angesichts der Tatsache, als Gruppe nicht tatsächlich zusammenkommen zu können. Jede:r Künstler:in war sich bewusst, dass sich gleichzeitig acht andere Künstler:innen – wie er:sie ebenfalls in Berlin – auf denselben Weg begaben. Doch erst am Ende des Projekts konnten sie einander durch die Videos der Rituale “sehen”.

Die Journalistin Elisabeth Nehring hat im Auftrag des HAU für dieses Buch Interviews mit den beteiligten Künstler:innen geführt. Die im Rahmen des Projekts entstandenen künstlerischen Rituale wurden von der Filmemacherin Liz Rosenfeld dokumentiert und sind weiterhin online auf HAU3000* zu sehen.

Why did you decide to realise “Unacknowledged Loss” as an online project?

When Annemie Vanackere and Ricardo Carmona from HAU Hebbel am Ufer proposed an online version of “Unacknowledged Loss” – since meeting in the flesh would clearly not be possible, owing to the pandemic – I felt some resistance. In the first edition, in 2017, the group was so important: the energy of togetherness, the deep conversations, inspiring lectures and workshops were the core of the project. We had intensely interesting cross-cultural talks about death and dying as well as about how, in different cultures and countries, different methods and tools come into play with regard to farewells and mourning.

I couldn’t really imagine that this kind of process would work in an online version.

But after thinking about it a couple of days, I proposed to use the pain of the group that cannot meet and the loss of the original concept as the pain and loss in the current project. Basically, I took this situation as a chance to reimagine the project, then adapted the curatorial programme to it.

How did you curate the programme for this edition?

The programme was (literally and virtually) about presence and absence. Every artist knew that other Berlin-based artists were simultaneously doing “Unacknowledged Loss”, but didn’t know who the others were. Only at the very end did they discover the group as a group (and still only virtually). So, the curation concept was to pay attention to individual work with little sparkles of energetic connection, but without having the artists meet.

Each day in the first week, for instance, I asked someone to prepare a picnic and bring it to HAU, where someone else from the group would pick it up and then eat it in a cemetery. The person who prepared the lunch had to make a phone call to the person who was at that very moment eating the lunch, and either speak a text or sing a song about their inability to meet, absence and presence, and the complexity of encounters in times of Corona. This was a healing way of joining the dots without literally meeting the other.

So, you tried to create a connection between people without letting them meet in reality?

Yes. I also wanted to connect one artist who was in the first edition of “Unacknowledged Loss” to all the artists in the second edition; in terms of energy, it felt right to bond these two groups. So, I asked Claudia Hill, who has a project called “Social Fabric”,

for which she designed a huge piece of cloth, a sheet with a hole to put your head in. This fabric has already travelled all over the world. She’s always sending it to someone she knows, somewhere on the planet, who lives with it for a certain time and, in the end, takes a picture of themself with the social fabric and then sends it on to the next person. It’s a project about weaving living beauty together. This crossdisciplinary project is not so much about the textile as about remembering that our connection is all we have, is all we are. Accordingly, the idea was to weave the group together by having each person in it wear this same piece of cloth at a certain moment during the project.

Were there also encounters in person?

Yes, all the artists had a one-on-one meeting with Franziska Dieterich, Uller Gscheidel and Liz Rosenfeld. With Franziska Dieterich, a trauma healer, it was more an individual workshop than a meeting. She met each of them individually, in the order they had replied to her email, in which she had asked what kinds of question they had regarding trauma healing. Each artist also had a private talk with Uller Gscheidel, a funeral director. He made a space in HAU with a coffin and a little shrine, where the artists could go talk with him about what they wanted to say goodbye to, and then burn it or leave it there, safe in the knowledge that Uller would take it with him and bury it somewhere in Berlin. The artists also met the video artist Liz Rosenfeld in person, who at the close of the project made video works out of the artists’ rituals.

She is the only person who saw all of the rituals, in the end: the sole witness – and a very special one.

How did the artists react to the given situation?

I wanted to be consistent about not seeing each other except online. But I also knew that the moment I felt there was resistance or when people told me: “Listen, we can’t deal with this concept anymore”, I would immediately change it, saying: “OK, we did it for as long as we could. We’ve learned that being able to see each other is hugely important”. But nobody ever said: “Enough!” This was the biggest surprise of all for me: the fact that even though it must have been difficult or complex for them, the artists showed great generosity in trying to do the project in the way I had conceived it for this online version.

What did you learn from this special edition of “Unacknowledged Loss”?

First of all, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of bringing attention back to the notion of care, as an antidote to nihilism, to not doing anything, to being sceptical or indifferent about our times. We are capable of caring – both for humans and for the earth. Discussing questions such as: Do you care? How do you care? Where do you learn to care? How can you care for something that is maybe consuming you? was the most important conversation with the artists. I also learned a lot about what it means to be with someone. For instance, if somebody is going through a difficult time, I can say: “I’ll be with you in my thoughts”. But that’s very different than actually being by their side.

How do you perceive this time of social restrictions in general?

What I learned already at the very beginning of the lockdown is that a crisis like this takes things away, but also gives a lot back to us. It’s a matter not only of lost futures, but of possible futures, too.

The restrictions in place in relation to the funeral business or farewell rituals, for instance, limit gatherings to a maximum of fifteen people, who are moreover not allowed to touch each other, which is very painful. But I also think that having only fifteen people attend a funeral may create a very beautiful sense of intimacy. So, people are perhaps making more beautiful funerals than ever, because they don’t have to deal with the complexity of a big group and the various sensibilities implicit in that.

Besides this, I feel this is an opportunity to rethink how we commemorate. A lot of those smaller funerals will be redone later, when people are allowed to gather again and want to commemorate in a bigger circle the person who died. As a result, there is now time and space to think about the right ceremony, and to work with elements that would be transformed by the time the ritual takes place: for instance, seeds planted now that would be in bloom at the ceremony.

To have time for this kind of approach and for preparing a ritual allows for a shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on being unable to make things better, for lack of time, we can now actively channel our thoughts into creating better farewell rituals.

What does unacknowledged loss mean in times of crisis?

On the one hand, there are a lot of losses that we cannot yet see, because they will be revealed through economics and politics only in the future, on different levels: people losing their job, relationships that didn’t last, and so on. But for me, probably the biggest unacknowledged loss is people’s mental health, their psychological well-

being. We will see the damage done on this level in the near future, but I think the magnitude of the problem is still very much under the radar.

On the other hand, I’m someone who always sees both sides of a story, and its paradoxes too. For example, for people who were on the brink of a burnout, this lockdown period is heaven sent, because everyone and everything is slowing down.

They no longer have to cope with feeling that the whole world is turning fast and they alone cannot keep up the pace. Instead, they now find themselves surrounded by people who, like it or not, are having to decelerate.

What functions do rituals have in times of crisis?

First of all, rituals can be empowering, but they are no replacement for financial stability or other basic requirements. Rituals can have a therapeutic effect, however. A ritual is not a therapy, but it has a certain impact, because it’s a way to create a safe zone for yourself, in which you can practice letting go of your pain or of anything else you want to say goodbye to.

This crisis is a lot about letting go – letting go of your desire to get back to normal, letting go of asking: “When will normality come back?” Because the answer is: “Never”. And if the answer is never, it means you have to say goodbye to certain things that you’re attached to. A ritual can help you say goodbye, can facilitate this farewell. But we shouldn’t overestimate its impact. It’s just one among the many things people can do in order to cope with these times of radical transformation.

Olympia Bukkakis

What initially drove you to join this project?

I think delving into the past and also loss have been big themes in my work and life in the last few years and so I really looked forward to being able to have some time to go into that. In drag, you have to come up with a three- to five-minute show every week; you can’t repeat the same work too often. In general, I prefer to create something that will be performed for an audience. I’m very committed to that idea. But I also really liked the idea of a format that wasn’t so strictly oriented to that.

This project is about death, but also about transformation and rituals. Which kind of collective or individual rituals are or have been important to you?

I was raised secular, because neither of my parents is religious. But I went to an Anglican school in Australia and my father comes from an Irish Catholic family. In Australia, the difference between Anglicans and Catholics is very much just a class difference. So, it’s like descendants of English settlers or Irish settlers. And the Irish were an underclass. That’s my experience of these two forms of ritual or religion: it is just very much tied up with class.

Why did your parents send you to a religious school?

Just because it was a private school. My dad got a new job and, all of a sudden, I could afford to go to the Anglican school. So, it was like a class thing. I was actually forced to participate in these rituals as a part of our working-class family’s “upward mobility”, as it’s called.

Did you feel a connection to the kind of rituals you experienced in school?

No, because I think all of my experience of rituals unfolded in institutions that were committed to denying my humanity because I’m queer. At the time, I didn’t know I was trans, but I did know I was queer. And it’s the same now, when I go to these places: I have too much dignity and too much self-respect to sit there and have someone tell me I’m going to hell.

But I really enjoyed the act of singing together or everyone saying the same words together, at my school. All of the things that I got from ritual were like that. The only thing I feel really good about are these ancient arbitrary rituals, that people layer

their own meaning on to. That’s where I’m interested in ritual: when you can make secular use of a ritual to make something new possible, a new social situation. I think of a ritual as a situation with scaffolding – a rigid framework that allows certain things to happen. I was interested in how to provide that scaffolding in a process that provokes participants to let go of melancholic attachments.

Is a drag performance in itself a ritual?

Definitely, a drag performance is a ritual. I think in traditional drag performance, there is an evoked spirit. You speak with the authority of someone else – like Donna Summer or Cher or something like that. There is an absent presence that the entire group uses to form a social bond in a moment of catharsis. So, yeah, I think there are a lot of similarities. And it’s no accident that people like us, who have been shut out of those places where rituals would usually be performed, then create our own ritualised spaces.

This project is called “Unacknowledged Loss”. Have you discovered unacknowledged losses in your life?

I’m in an intense period of acknowledging loss. I think what I’ve discovered was more a reframing of all losses as the loss of various futures. I framed it in a temporal sense.

Every loss is a lost opportunity for a future. So that’s how that came to me – as a new way of acknowledging loss, so that there is room to really visualise what that future could have been and to confront yourself with that loss. I was working with the idea that it might be possible to provoke some sort of libidinal detachment, so as to be free to think about what is actually still possible.

So that means every loss makes space for another future?

Yes. But trying to think about the future is an almost impossible task. There is this melancholic attachment to a future that is clearly no longer possible, like this liberal view of social change in which there is steady and slow and reasonable progress towards a time where everyone gets to be a person. This is gone. And I think people can only really realise that, if they start to acknowledge that that future is gone and the current moment requires something very different.

Someone said to me the other day: “Even if climate change had been solved four years ago and we all knew that the world would continue, and that we, our children

and our grandchildren wouldn’t experience wars over water, even if we knew all that was solved, this current moment would still be deeply stressful”.

The current moment you are talking about is often called a crisis. Do you agree?

I think it’s a real crisis. Definitely. But it’s interesting on what level. I had a relationship breakdown last year and that felt like a massive crisis that I went through alone. I couldn’t believe that this is just an everyday thing that everyone goes through. And when the Corona crisis came and everything started shutting down, I lost all my work in 48 hours and felt very insecure. But I also knew that everyone was going through this with me. And that did feel different and it was less frightening than it could have been. That was my immediate emotional reaction.

So, yes, it’s a crisis, but it’s a collective crisis, in a time and society that is increasingly atomised and individualist, which itself is an absurd fiction, because that doesn’t work for us as a species.

I also feel that it’s a historic moment, in which we are going towards an unknown future. There is a deep insecurity about what the future will bring and in which directions societies will develop. What could that crisis mean for the arts?

The Australian government is using the moment as an attempt to permanently defund the arts. We don’t have a minister for the arts anymore in Australia, and I worry about what will happen.

In the last ten years, we’ve seen austerity policies all around the world, where the most vulnerable have been forced to pay for a crisis created by the rich. And we who work in the arts will be asked to pay for it. We’ll be asked to justify why we should be allowed to do the work that we’re doing, although we are already overworked and underpaid. So, this is a real crisis in terms of what will happen with my life in the future.

In a crisis like this, there is no longer a border between the political and the private.

We see the rise of the far right and increasing street attacks in Berlin, in London, everywhere. I was recently attacked on the street by a stranger. People link this kind

of attack to various things, but I tie it to economic stress. It is like you make the lives of a large part of the population very difficult, economically, and deprive them of their ability to provide for or protect their families. You set up the idea of what a man should be and then you take away his ability to fulfil that ideal – and he’s going to be out on the streets, angry.

Of course, structural homophobia and transphobia is a problem in any case. But the neoliberal politics of austerity turn it into a potentially deadly problem for us. And I think in the current situation it is going to get worse. It’s going to become more unsafe for people like me.

And what kind of responses does that trigger?

I’ve realised through my work that masculine modes of resistance are very fragile.

Keeping it together and staying strong and stoic: it really just doesn’t work. So, I’m trying instead to embrace loss and vulnerability. It’s always surprising how much more you can take than you thought you could. Of course, it causes anxiety. But these are just the times we live in.

Under usual circumstances, this project would be a collective experience. But in this edition, everybody was on their own. Nevertheless, did you feel some kind of connection to the others?

I felt quite isolated. I come from a discipline in which almost everyone is a soloist, but at the same time I’m very interested in interdisciplinary collaboration. I always work with a set designer and a dramaturg.

Just the abstract idea – that other people I didn’t know were doing something kind of similar to me in this project – didn’t give me a sense of companionship. I actually felt as alone as I actually was in that situation.

Did you feel comfortable or uncomfortable with being alone within this framework, one which also required very specific work with yourself?

It was definitely a very intense process to go through alone, because we talked via Zoom about what will happen to our bodies when we die, but without seeing each other’s faces. I think when this happens in a group setting, the support of the group and the connection to other people is what allows you to move through the process.

It’s quite something to confront someone with their mortality and then zoom out.

Of course, Barbara Raes made herself available via Zoom. But when it comes to comfort, I think we do need the presence of another person.

One thing that I’ve really learned from this is that there is no substitute for the presence of another human being. This is also a nice thing to realise – to feel grateful for the presence of other people, especially as someone who experiences quite a lot of street harassment and to whom the outside feels very often like a dangerous place.

What were the good and maybe also difficult moments in this project?

I think there was a beautiful moment for me – to see a photo of the stomach of a person who had passed away: just this mottled skin. The corpse was ten days old, I think. And I thought that this could be mine, this could be my body. And then I thought about my physical health and my body being a body that will die. And rather than feeling fear of that, I felt sadness. I started to have a preemptive grieving process for my own death, without that being a frightening thing. This was a really nice moment for me. Because before I applied to do an MA in Solo/ Dance/Authorship at the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT), I did an internship there and then applied to train as a nurse, because I wanted to work in palliative care.

So, you have already been pretty close to the topic …

I just had this feeling that I am going to die, so, I want to be good at it. I thought I’m definitely going to have to go through this and I will have a more pleasant and dignified experience if I know something about it. And I thought the idea of accompanying someone who is leaving the world would be beautiful. But I couldn’t train as a nurse. They didn’t accept my application. So, I was like, okay, well: I’ll just apply to do the Master of Arts and become a performer, which is what I wanted to do. And then I got into making performance. I think this fed a similar impulse, for me. With the end of life always hovering on the horizon we have to come up with reasons to continue. I think drag performers are an example of people trying to find meaning in a meaningless world.

Can you describe what was essential to your personal ritual?

My ritual consisted of three parts. In the first, I gave the participant a cup of water and invited them to tell me about a future that they had lost, asking them questions in order to help them fully picture and confront it. Then I offered them three options

for the cup of water: drink it, pour it onto the ground, or empty it over their head.

Whatever they chose, I did the same with my own cup of water. Then I asked them to think about a future that was still possible, tell me three things about it, and then leave.

The most important elements for me in this were: the arbitrary restrictions or rules that invite us to layer our own meanings on to them; the act of mirroring, which is a major comfort in a grieving process; and the focus on fully imagining what we have lost, in order to accept it and eventually move on.

What was your initial interest in joining the project?

I saw this project as an opportunity to reflect on and understand my own relationship to grief. Coming from a working-class environment affected by wars, loss was constantly present, but at the same time the motto was: “Don’t mourn; just organise and survive”. So, in a way, grief was a luxury one could not afford. People were forced to silence grief, because there was no space or time for it.

When you grow up that way, it creates a very specific relationship to mourning. I’ve seen this project as an opportunity to reflect on how my past conditioned my personal relationship to grief. This also meant understanding that grief is not universally accessible, but basically conditioned and socially variable. So, I’m interested in two parallel layers: the interest derives from personal experience, but also reflects the bigger question about grief as a social condition and how grieving becomes a luxury instead of something everyone has an equal right to.

This project deals with rituals. Which rituals are or have been important in your life?

As I come from an atheistic background, I’ve never developed a real relationship to religious rituals or to the idea of the ritual itself. Although there were those everyday “rituals” that were not considered as such but which, with hindsight, I can see had a transgressing effect. So, I got interested in everyday rituals as coping mechanisms that one develops to deal with losses. And I discovered that an important one for me is cleaning. In a sense, it’s a transgenerational coping mechanism that I began practicing after observing my mother, and then made into a ritual of my own.

Together with storytelling, it became part of the ritual that I developed for this particular occasion.

Can you describe which actual process of cleaning you perceive as a ritual?

It is not so much about which actions I actually undertake, but more about the effect of taking action at all. It is that which plays into my perception of it as a ritual. For the most part, it’s a very pragmatic matter of cleaning up the environment. After every breakup, my toilet shines; after every disappointment, the floors are spotless and the windows are so clean, you can’t even tell any more that there’s glass in them. So, this is definitely a coping mechanism that helps me regain a sense of control, and deal with loss. This ritual is followed by stories of loss, through which I’m able also to reflect on cleaning as a form of labour, one that was a part of my family

history, too. So, in a way, I’m unpacking a multi-layered relationship to the act of cleaning.

I researched a Swedish pre-death cleaning ritual, which is a way of organising your earthly possessions before you die, so your family won’t have to go through the stress of it; and at the same time, it’s a way of revisiting a lifetime of memories accumulated with and tied up with these things. It’s an interesting approach: decluttering as a way of revisiting what has passed and what has been lost.

The project is called “Unacknowledged Loss”. Probably in every life there are a lot of unacknowledged losses. Have you discovered any in your life?

I think this unacknowledged loss theme has followed me from a very early age. In my childhood I basically lost everything I perceived as reality. My family had to relocate as refugees, due to the war. The country we had lived in until then was falling apart, at the time; money, too, lost all its value. It was a complete loss of our entire reality.

What do you recall of your situation as a child?

Looking back, I realise that for a long time you normalise everything, because that’s the only way to survive. You don’t have time to mourn. My parents didn’t. I didn’t. As a kid, I didn’t want to be difficult and add more stress to an already difficult situation.

If I reflect on it retrospectively, it’s only now that I even start talking about these things. I think for a long time I just shut them off.

Do you still feel affected by these memories?

Today, because I’m in the position of an immigrant, I experience loss in another way: I feel I’m losing a sense of belonging, because I am and always will be a foreigner here, but I feel the same way also when I go back to where I came from. So, it’s an existential sort of loss.

Another element is the ideology of free choice we live in. Many of us, particularly in the western world, are often presented with a variety of choices, to do this, that or the other. And with every choice we make, there is a sense of losing all those other opportunities. I think the world we are in fosters this FOMO (fear of missing out) feeling: Oh, am I losing out here?

This project has different layers: loss, death, farewell, transition. In my view, these are very different elements but of course belong together. Which one was especially important to you in this project?

I think I wanted to say goodbye to silence through a ritual that was full of storytelling about different losses, but also related to my coping mechanism, this process of cleaning. Another element was the presence of an audience, which is a central point in my performance practice, as the spectators usually co-produce the performance. The project gave me space to reflect on the loss of the audience as a (hopefully) temporary loss of a crucial aspect of my artistic practice.

Furthermore, it was important for me to understand how my biographical context had shaped my relationship to grief and how this became a pattern I continued to live with. In a way, the silenced grief found its voice in the stories of this ritual. This project helped me to reflect on that in a personal way, and via the personal I tried to go deeper into the more general question of how our experience of grief is socially conditioned. I connected this particular relationship to mourning shaped by the past to our current mourning, as a society, of our lost opportunities to gather in theatres and experience the collective spirit of the ritual itself.

Under usual circumstances, the group would have played a big role in this project as a temporary community. How did you perceive the absence of the group?

I hear from colleagues that the collective was a really important part of the first edition of the project. So, I did wonder how it would work without it.

As I understand it, Barbara Raes took our particular situation as a starting point, and thereby opened up the space for us to mourn exactly that. Not knowing who the other people were, but knowing they were going through a similar process – well, this knowledge created an interesting mood. For me, it was important to know that there was a presence in this absence.

I think that Barbara’s guidance and the infrastructural support from HAU was also important, especially considering the circumstances and particularity of the topic.

I felt very well taken care of.

I remember Barbara saying at the beginning that this is a project situated somewhere between art and care; and that it’s not a therapy, but it is therapeutic. At first, I understood that more on a cognitive level, but as I went further into the experience of the first week, it was something else completely, to grasp what she meant through embodiment and experience.

Which encounters have been crucial for you?

I remember my meeting with funeral undertaker Uller Gscheidel very well. We didn’t know each other, but because of the context and his profession and the topic of the project, he was the first person who’s not my therapist to whom I actually spoke in such detail about the death of my father. It is interesting how this project directly digs deep into the personal.

There were some endeavours to connect the group – through the transfer of the poncho and the preparation/receipt of a homemade lunch. How did these work for you?

For me, absence and presence were not immediate topics, but they became very important. Absence, presence and also trust had to be negotiated in a certain way because all of this was in the gestures proposed, for example, in the idea of a picnic.

It’s an interesting situation to eat food prepared by a person you don’t know; but you know that a degree of care has been put into that gesture. Having a phone call while you are eating food as a kind of gift from an unknown person – this was a really moving experience for me.

What other good or difficult moments were there?

I remember the moment when I recognised my tendency to hold onto things. For example, we were asked to bring along an object we wanted to say goodbye to. At the very moment I was supposed to leave behind this symbol of attachment I had brought along for the occasion, I realised I felt fear. This made me reflect on my tendency to hold onto things.

Another thing that particularly struck me is the process of negotiating: How can such a personal process be translated into a ritual? Or: How will I be able to bring it into shared spaces, especially under the particular conditions we are in now?

These particular conditions you mention are often referred to as a crisis. Are you experiencing this period as a crisis?

Looking at it on the larger scale, I think that we theatre-makers will all have to negotiate these new conditions. Figuring out how to deal with them is definitely going to be a long-term process – not only for artists, but also for institutions.

From my point of view, the biggest burden at the moment is the insecurity clouding our future. It feels like a turning point for society.

At the beginning, when all this started, I was very optimistic, thinking, okay, this could be an opportunity for rotten capitalistic structures to systematically crash so then something else can happen in the world. But now I see, more and more, how the system actually also benefits from or exploits the current crisis. And this makes me less optimistic, in general terms.

In which way is your own artistic work affected by the crisis?

There is the general amplification effect, in that the precarity of the already precarious work of a freelance choreographer grows worse. And besides that, my practice is very much affected by the loss of the collective spirit inherent to the theatre as a social gathering. In my artistic practice, I look at the theatre/performance space not solely as a space of representation, but as a space of social gathering where social phenomena are made manifest. In this space, the audience plays a crucial role as a co-producer of the performative experiences. All the regulations imposed on us by the Corona crisis change to a huge extent the actual audience experience and thus limit the possibility of audience engagement; and so we have lost that precious element of social contagion rooted in physical proximity.

Was hat dich an diesem Projekt interessiert?

Im Vorfeld wurde uns gar nicht viel erzählt, es gab ja eine strenge Geheimhaltung.

Aber in der allgemeinen Beschreibung des Projekts habe ich Parallelen zu meiner eigenen künstlerischen Praxis gesehen, weil ich mich auch mit Ritualen, kulturellen Praktiken und immateriellem Erbe beschäftige.

Nicht zu wissen, auf welchen Prozess du dich einlässt – wie hast du das empfunden?

Ich fand es gut, vorher nicht zu wissen, welche Künstler:innen noch beteiligt sind, weil ich die Namen sonst auf jeden Fall recherchiert hätte. Natürlich hätte mich interessiert, wer noch dabei ist, aber auf diese Weise musste ich die Kontrolle abgeben und mich auf etwas Ungewisses einlassen. Das fand ich spannend.

Dieses Projekt hat viele Ebenen: Abschied, Verlust, Loslassen. Und natürlich ist es auch ein Projekt über Rituale. Gibt es individuelle oder kollektive Rituale, die für dein Leben wichtig sind oder waren?

Ich gehöre nicht zu den Personen, die ihre morgendliche Zigarette auf dem Balkon als Ritual bezeichnen würden. Für mich sind Rituale kollektiv und haben immer etwas mit Gemeinschaft zu tun. Beerdigungsrituale habe ich in meiner Kindheit aufgrund der Migrationsgeschichte meiner Familie nicht im Realraum erleben können. Ich bin im Sauerland aufgewachsen, in meiner Kindheit wurden die Verstorbenen in die Türkei überführt und dort beerdigt. Dokumentiert wurden die Beerdigungen durch Videobriefe. Das ist eine Praxis, die es seit den Siebzigerjahren in Deutschland gibt.

Das Sterben meines Großvaters habe ich auf diese Weise filmisch erleben können.

Gibt es Rituale, an denen du ganz direkt teilgenommen hast?

In meiner Kindheit war ich auf vielen Henna-Nächten und Hochzeiten. Das war schön, aber auch sehr melancholisch. Die Frauen weinen anfangs, später tanzen und feiern sie. Das heißt, erst wird der Abschied begangen und dann ein neuer Lebensabschnitt gefeiert. Die Freude kommt nach der Melancholie. Diese Traditionen haben sich geändert und transformiert. Jetzt nehme ich nicht mehr an so vielen Hochzeitsfeiern teil.

Ein weiteres Ritual, das ich mag, sind die Goldbeschenkungen – eine islamische Praxis, die auch in einigen christlichen Kontexten begangen wird und in der die Bräute

zur Hochzeit Gold bekommen. In Deutschland wird diese Praxis oft missinterpretiert, nämlich als “Brautpreis”. Das Gold geht aber ausschließlich in den Besitz der Frau über, damit sie finanziell unabhängig bleiben kann. Das ist eine sehr alte Praxis, um die Autonomie der Frau zu sichern, die ich, historisch betrachtet, relativ feministisch finde.

Das Projekt heißt “Unacknowledged Loss” – was ist dein bisher nicht anerkannter oder unbewusster Verlust?

Sprache hat immer eine ziemlich große Rolle in meinem Leben gespielt. Meine Eltern sprechen miteinander das pontische Griechisch, Romeyka. Mit uns Kindern haben sie aber immer Türkisch gesprochen, weil sie uns den Anschluss an die türkischsprachige Community in Deutschland ermöglichen wollten. Das hatte sehr wahrscheinlich auch mit Assimilationspolitiken aus der Türkei zu tun. Das pontische Griechisch war so etwas wie eine Geheimsprache zwischen meinen Eltern und auch wichtig für die Kommunikation mit dem Teil der Familie, der nicht in Deutschland lebte. Innerhalb unserer Familie in der Diaspora ist diese Sprache inzwischen fast verschwunden; für meine Generation war das wie eine passive Erstsprache, die an uns nicht weitergegeben wurde.

Erlebst du das als Verlust?

Ja, denn das pontische Griechisch wird weltweit nur noch von ca. 5000 Menschen gesprochen und von der UNESCO als eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Sprache eingestuft. Dadurch bleibt mir der Zugang zu einem Teil meiner Familiengeschichte(n) und auch anderer Geschichte(n) verschlossen. Das empfinde ich als Verlust.

Ist diese Verlusterfahrung eingegangen in das Projekt?

Nein, nicht direkt. Viel eher ging es für mich um das Gefühl und die Praxis der kollektiven Melancholie, die für mich immer von Verlust(erfahrungen) ausgeht.

Melancholie als Grundgefühl passt ja zu den Themen, die in diesem Projekt ins Zentrum gestellt werden: Tod, Abschied, Übergang. Was war davon wichtig für dich?

Verschiedene Emotionen. Trauern ist ja total vielschichtig. In unserer Gesellschaft ist nicht so viel Raum für verschiedenste Trauerrituale gegeben. Viel eher gibt es aus meiner Perspektive ein Dogma der Happiness, das heißt, immer glücklich zu sein, nach Glück zu streben oder zumindest keine Spaßbremse zu sein.

Erlebst das auch in der künstlerischen Arbeit?

Nein, ich glaube, da gibt es eine größere Offenheit. Aus meiner Sicht wird vor allem außerhalb der Bühne häufig ein Dualismus reproduziert, in dem es nur Platz für Glück oder Trauer gibt. Doch es ist viel fluider.

In den bisherigen Ausgaben war “Unacknowledged Loss” ein Projekt, in dem der Einzelne mit seiner Erfahrung stark in der Gruppe aufgehoben war. In diesem Jahr war alles anders, ihr wart sehr auf euch gestellt. Wie hat sich das für dich angefühlt?

Für den Abschluss fand ich es toll, dass es kein analoges Publikum gab. Das war für mich wie Glück im Unglück. Aber für den ersten Teil hätte ich mir mehr Austausch gewünscht. Dadurch, dass wir bei den Zoom-Treffen die Kameras aus hatten, blieb der Raum so unsichtbar. Mir war nicht klar, in welchen Raum ich da überhaupt spreche. Wir haben uns auch nicht viel ausgetauscht. Der Tonfall war sehr höflich und wohlwollend, aber Austausch hat nicht wirklich stattgefunden.

Das stelle ich mir schwierig vor.

Das war total schwierig – und schade. Ich dachte, dass dieses Format irgendwann aufgelöst wird. Aber es blieb so, da war Barbara Raes sehr konsequent. Als konzeptuelle Entscheidung kann ich das verstehen, doch der Austausch hat mir gefehlt, weil es dadurch sehr individualistisch wurde. Das Kollektiv war abwesend oder zumindest unsichtbar.

Es gab Momente, mit denen versucht wurde, eine Verbindung zwischen den Teilnehmer:innen herzustellen. Ein Poncho wurde weitergereicht und jede:r sollte für eine andere, unbekannte Person aus dem Projekt einen Lunch zubereiten und hat wiederum ein Lunchpaket erhalten. Wie ging es dir damit?

Ich war ja die erste Lunchpaket-Geberin. Das fand ich ganz schön, vor allem, weil vorher nicht klar war, dass das Picknick auf einem Friedhof stattfinden wird. Ich habe ein riesiges Lunchpaket zurückerhalten, das für den ganzen Tag gereicht hat. Ich mochte diese fürsorgliche Geste, aber es war trotzdem schwierig, denn man weiß ja nicht, was die unbekannte Person mag. Wenn ich Gäste empfange, frage ich immer vorher, welche Nahrungsmittel die Leute mögen. Hier gab es dazu überhaupt keine Möglichkeiten. Es wurde nur gesagt vegetarisch, aber auch da kann man vieles falsch machen. Es ist eine tolle Geste, kann aber irgendwie auch danebengehen. Ich weiß gar nicht, ob die Person, mit dem Lunchpaket zufrieden war.

Gibt es ein Bedürfnis, sich noch mal darüber auszutauschen – nicht nur über den Lunch, sondern über das ganze Projekt?

Das fände ich total toll. Während des Lockdowns ist mir noch einmal klar geworden, dass viele digitale Formate, wie zum Beispiel die Kacheln im Screen suggerieren, dass alle gleich sind. Aber das sind wir nicht. Es ist nicht klar, in welchem Raum man spricht. Oder wer mich anruft während des Picknicks. Es ist irgendwie eine sehr spekulative Fürsorge.

Das geänderte Format war ja den Kontaktbeschränkungen während der Corona-Pandemie geschuldet. Noch sind wir mittendrin und diese Zeit wird oft als Krise beschrieben. Wie erlebst du das?

Ich habe die ersten drei Wochen während der Corona-Pandemie einfach funktioniert und mich zusammengerissen. Diese Phase bedeutete für mich Durchhalten. Homeschooling, Homeoffice, Homecooking – für meinen Geschmack war das zu viel Fokus auf das Zuhause, obwohl ich in einer WG lebe und dadurch nicht vereinsamt bin. Das war schon ein Privileg. Aber irgendwann hat mir der Realraum gefehlt, Begegnungen, Umarmungen und diese vielen kleinen Rituale. Die fehlenden sozialen, physischen Kontakte ließen sich durch Gespräche über Video und Telefonate nicht mehr kompensieren. Wie wahrscheinlich alle anderen Menschen auch, hoffe ich, dass keine zweite Welle kommt. Aber als Krise habe ich das nicht erlebt. Für mich hat sich herauskristallisiert: Ich mag Versammlungsräume!

Viele Künstler:innen haben den ersten Lockdown als existenzielle Bedrohung erlebt. Wie ist es dir ergangen?

Ich habe durchgehend künstlerisch gearbeitet. Ich musste leider sogar Projekte aus Zeitgründen absagen. Für viele Kolleg:innen aber ist diese Zeit natürlich schrecklich, vor allem wenn alle Gastspielmöglichkeiten wegfallen. Es ist noch einmal klar geworden, dass du in der freischaffenden Szene einfach immer hundertprozentiges Risiko eingehst und viele Institutionen ihre Verantwortung auf die Künstler:innen abwälzen oder von ihnen auf einmal eine schnelle Anpassung erwarten, zum Beispiel die Arbeit mit innovativen digitalen Formaten. Doch es lässt sich nicht alles in den digitalen Raum übersetzen und überführen. Und vor allem bedeutet das, dass die Mehrarbeit nicht bezahlt wird. Umso toller war es, dass das HAU dieses Projekt trotz aller Schwierigkeiten umgesetzt und nicht zuletzt den Künstler:innen auch Honorare gezahlt hat!

In Bezug auf das “Unacknowledged Loss”-Projekt hast du gute und schwierige Momente geschildert. Was ist dir noch in Erinnerung geblieben, oder was ist wichtig gewesen an dem Input, den ihr bekommen habt?

Die beiden Vorträge der Bestatterin Lea Gscheidel und das persönliche Treffen mit ihrem Vater Uller Gscheidel, der ebenfalls Bestatter ist, sind mir in Erinnerung geblieben. Lea und Uller haben mich über mögliche Bestattungsrituale und das deutsche Bestattungsrecht aufgeklärt. Das Bestattungswesen in Deutschland ist heteronormativ und klassistisch, zudem verunmöglicht die staatliche Rechtsordnung religiösen Minderheiten eine Bestattung nach ihrem Ritus. Das Bestattungsrecht muss dringend demokratisiert werden.

Was hat dich an diesem Projekt interessiert?

Die Anfrage kam, als ich mich entschieden hatte, nicht mehr auf der Bühne zu stehen.

Das war ein Punkt, an dem ich dachte, mit dem Performen ist es vorbei. Meine Seele ist müde, ich mache nicht nur eine künstlerische Pause, sondern komplett Schluss damit. Jedes Angebot habe ich mit den Worten abgelehnt, ich sei keine Künstlerin mehr. Aber die Mail von Annemie und Ricardo klang anders – nicht nach Ego, nicht nach einem Format, bei dem du repräsentieren musst und danach alleine nach Hause gehst und dich ausgelaugt fühlst. Sie löste stattdessen den Gedanken aus: Ok, ich brauche etwas, um mich zu heilen und an der Erinnerung an meine Zeit als Künstlerin zu arbeiten. Ich ahnte intuitiv, dass dieses Projekt für mich ein Abschied von der Welt der Performance werden könnte. Oder besser: ein Übergang in einen neuen Zugang zur Performance.

“Unacknowledged Loss” berührt viele Schichten und Themen – und es ist ein Projekt über Rituale. Gibt es Rituale, die für dein Leben wichtig sind oder waren?

Früher waren mir christliche Rituale wichtig. Meine Mama hat mich immer in die Kirche mitgenommen und dort habe ich Orgel gespielt. Ich habe viel geprobt und war jeden Sonntag die Erste in der Kirche, um schon an der Orgel zu sitzen, wenn alle kamen. Das war ein wichtiges Ritual. Ein anderes war der Joint auf dem Weg in die Kirche. (lacht) Heute würde ich mich eher als spirituell statt religiös bezeichnen. Wenn ich morgens aufwache, mache ich zum Beispiel immer zwei gegenüberliegende Fenster auf, damit frische Luft durch die ganze Wohnung ziehen kann. Bevor ich Musik anmache oder aufs Handy schaue, setze ich mich mit einem Kaffee vor das geöffnete Fenster – ganz in Ruhe und nur mit mir. Das erlebe ich als Alltagsritual. Aber ich habe mich während des Projekts auch gefragt, ob zu der Form des Rituals nicht mehrere Menschen gehören und es eigentlich ein größerer Akt sein müsste.

Beim Orgelspielen oder beim Gang in die Kirche – gab es da religiöse oder spirituelle Empfindungen?

Nein, daran kann ich mich nicht erinnern. Zu dieser Zeit wurden Homosexuelle in Botswana kriminalisiert. Bis zum Juni letzten Jahres war Homosexualität dort eine Straftat und die Kirche ist bis heute homophob. Ich wusste schon als afrikanische Jugendliche mit konservativem Background, dass die Prinzipien der Kirche nicht zu

mir passen. Als 16-jähriges Mädchen fühlte ich keine Zugehörigkeit. Es war eher so: Ok, ich bin hier, weil ich ein Dach über dem Kopf und etwas zu essen habe. Aber wenn ihr mich nicht als den queeren Menschen akzeptiert, der ich bin, gehöre ich nicht wirklich zu euch.

Gibt es in der künstlerischen Arbeit rituelle Abläufe?

Für mich sind die Warm-ups Rituale – oder wenn vor der Aufführung alle zusammenkommen. Und dann habe ich noch ein ganz persönliches Ritual: In allen Theatern, in denen ich bisher performt habe – egal, ob in Deutschland, New York City, Südafrika oder Botswana –, gehe ich vor der Aufführung durch jede Zuschauerreihe. Dabei singe ich einen Song, den ich in meinem ersten Studienjahr gelernt habe. “You are a rock against the wind – calling forth all our grandmothers bones” heißt es darin. Ich habe das Gefühl, als würde ich die Geister meiner Vorfahren beschwören, die mich auf der Bühne beschützen.

Gibt es in deinem Leben Verluste, die lange unbemerkt blieben?

Ich denke, dass wir jeden Tag Dinge verlieren, ohne uns dessen bewusst zu sein, weil wir uns zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf das konzentrieren, was wir gewinnen. Als ich nach Berlin zog, war es keine große Sache, dass ich in Johannesburg bis zu einem gewissen Grad den Status einer Einheimischen verlor, denn je länger ich von dort wegbleibe, desto mehr verliere ich das Gefühl, dorthin zu gehören.

Mit jedem Tag, der vergeht, verliere ich ein Stück meiner Jugend – und auch das bleibt im Grunde unbemerkt, da ich mit dem Leben beschäftigt bin. Aber dann sehe ich eines Tages auf einem Foto das deutliche Altern oder ich stelle mich im Arbeitskontext vor und werde auf einmal als “erfahrene Künstlerin” gesehen und nicht mehr als “junge Künstlerin mit Potenzial”.

Es gibt verschiedene Themen, die in diesem Projekt ins Zentrum gestellt werden: Tod, Abschied, Übergang. Was war davon wichtig für dich?

Mein Ritual war ein Abschied. Jede Transformation ist ein kleiner oder großer Abschied. Ich habe zum Beispiel in der Zeit der Residenz ganz viel in meiner Wohnung verändert, um das letzte Jahr und einige Dinge aus meinem Leben zu verabschieden. Dafür habe ich alle Wände alleine gestrichen. Transformation und Abschied waren für mich mit diesem Akt der Arbeit, den ich als “ritual of labor” bezeichnen

würde, verbunden. Du nimmst dir die Zeit, du bist konzentriert. Das Streichen hat etwas Meditatives, das man mit großer Konsequenz durchführen kann.

In den vorigen Ausgaben war “Unacknowledged Loss” ein Projekt, das stark mit dem Erleben in der Gruppe zusammenhing. In diesem Jahr konntet ihr euch bedingt durch die Corona-Kontaktbeschränkungen nicht kennenlernen und nicht treffen. Wie war das für dich?

In der ersten Woche fand ich es noch romantisch und aufregend, zum Beispiel als ich ein Picknick für jemand Fremdes vorbereitet habe. Etwas zu essen für jemanden zuzubereiten, den du nicht kennst, aber es trotzdem mit Liebe zu machen – das fand ich sehr beruhigend und zugleich super aufregend. Die zweite Woche war dagegen schwer für mich. Da haben wir viel über unseren eigenen Tod gesprochen und was passieren wird, nachdem wir gestorben sind. Dafür haben wir ein sehr detailliertes, 13-seitiges Dokument mit Fragen bekommen. Darin sollten wir zum Beispiel beantworten, wer wofür verantwortlich sein soll nach unserem Tod. Die Einladung, über das Ende nachzudenken, hat für mich Fragen der Zugehörigkeit aufgeworfen und war – gerade in einer Zeit der Isolation – emotional sehr anstrengend, weil es so viele schwere Gefühle rund um Trauer und Verlust zutage gefördert hat.

Was haben diese Fragen in dir ausgelöst?

Ich habe gedacht: “Oh Gott, ich habe in Berlin zwar einen Freundeskreis, aber keine Blutsverwandten und wohne alleine.” Dann ging ein ganzes Kopfkino an Fragen los: Soll ich eine:n meiner Freund:innen als Verantwortliche:n nach meinem Tod einsetzen? Was soll er oder sie machen, wenn mir wirklich etwas passiert? Meine ganzen Sachen auf die Straße schmeißen? Was wird sein, wenn ich im Schlaf sterbe? Oder wenn ich unter der Dusche einen Herzanfall bekomme? Niemand hat einen zweiten Schlüssel zu meiner Wohnung.

All diese Gedanken haben mich erschreckt. Und diese Gefühle alleine zu durchleben und dabei immer nur am Computer mit jemandem zu sprechen war schwer. Barbara hat versucht, uns zu unterstützen, aber wir haben die ganze Zeit über Zoom miteinander gesprochen. Diese Art des Kontakts hat keine Tiefe, keine Körperlichkeit, bleibt kalt und flach. Ich kann sehr offen und gesprächig sein, aber auch sehr reserviert, wenn ich den anderen nicht richtig spüre. Solche Gespräche am Computer erlebe ich als sehr unpersönlich.

Wie bist du mit dieser Leerstelle umgegangen?

Ich habe mich in dieser Zeit manchmal an meine Freund:innen gewandt und ihnen erzählt, woran ich gerade arbeite. Vonseiten der Community und der Freund:innen gab es ganz viel Unterstützung.

Diese ganzen Emotionen haben mich an das letzte Jahr erinnert, an das Gefühl, ich drehe mich zu viel um mich selbst und möchte deswegen aufhören zu performen.

Wenn es einen Austausch mit der Gruppe gibt, bleibt man nicht so alleine mit dem, was man fühlt. Es gibt nicht nur deine Stimme, sondern du kannst alle Gedanken und Gefühle mit anderen abgleichen.

Auch als Gruppe habt ihr euch im Zoom getroffen, allerdings ohne euch zu sehen. Wie war das für dich?

Ich kannte zwei von neun Leuten, das hat geholfen. Die Gespräche waren interessant, wie ein Kopfkino oder ein Radiospiel – man kann sich einfach auf das Thema konzentrieren und muss sich nicht ablenken lassen von den Gesichtern der anderen.

Von daher war es eine sehr konzentrierte Stunde und auch sehr bequem, weil man es sich richtig gemütlich machen konnte auf seiner Couch. Trotzdem war es auch hart. Wir sind es gewohnt, bei Gesprächen mit Menschen in einem Raum zu sein, und kennen die Choreografie der Gesprächsführung. Aber im Zoom fehlt diese gewohnte Gruppendynamik.

Eine andere Sache war das Gefühl, dass für mich alles viel zu schnell ging. Ich wollte mir manchmal Notizen machen, aber die Informationen kamen viel zu rasch hintereinander. Wir sprachen über Rituale, aber ich hatte mitunter das Gefühl, es geht darum, eine Leistung zu erbringen. Ich konnte mir gar keine Zeit lassen, einfach nur zuzuhören und die Informationen erst einmal zu verarbeiten, bevor es weitergeht.

Das Format des diesjährigen “Unacknowledged Loss”-Projekts war der aktuellen Situation mitsamt allen coronabedingten Restriktionen geschuldet. Es fällt in eine Zeit, die oft als Krise beschrieben wird – erlebst du es auch so?

Ich hatte das Glück, dass die Arbeit an “Unacknowledged Loss” gerade in diese Zeit fiel. Als wir während des ersten Lockdowns alle zu Hause bleiben mussten, bin ich nicht in den Krisenmodus verfallen, weil ich wusste, es gibt dieses Projekt im nächsten Monat. Derzeit fühle ich mich als eine von wenigen Privilegierten – anders als viele andere Kolleg:innen, die ihre Arbeit vollständig verloren haben. Das betrifft nicht

nur Künstler:innen, sondern auch Menschen aus anderen Arbeitsfeldern und diejenigen, die von Vollzeit auf Teilzeit wechseln mussten.

Mein Bruder ist Pilot und kann gerade nicht arbeiten, weil er normalerweise Tourist:innen auf Safaris herumfliegt. Sein Gehalt wurde auf 50% reduziert, aber seit Monaten gibt es überhaupt keine Arbeit für ihn. Er hat seine Wohnung aufgeben müssen und lebt nach sieben Jahren Selbstständigkeit jetzt wieder bei unserer Mutter.

Das heißt, ich erlebe die Krise eher durch die Familie, bin aber selbst das erste Mal in meinem Leben an einem Punkt, an dem ich sagen kann: Ich bin privilegiert. Das ist richtig komisch für mich.

Welche Folgen der aktuellen Situation beobachtest du in deiner Umgebung?

Für den Kulturbereich im Allgemeinen ist es eine große Krise – vor allem außerhalb Deutschlands. Ich kenne überall viele Künstler:innen, die sich fragen, wie lange sie noch warten müssen, bin sie wieder arbeiten können. Hier in Berlin hat die Soforthilfe ganz viele Leute gerettet und das hat viel Ruhe gebracht. Aber wenn ich mit meinen Künstlerfreund:innen in Botswana oder Südafrika spreche, merke ich, wie schwer sie es haben, weil es dort überhaupt keine finanzielle Unterstützung gibt.

Jede:r von euch hat am Schluss ein eigenes Ritual realisiert – was war zentral für dein persönliches Ritual?

Im Mittelpunkt meines Rituals stand die Erinnerung und Aktivierung des Gesprächs als Vehikel für Heilung. Ich habe mein ehemaliges Schlafzimmer in ein Wohnzimmer verwandelt, um dessen Energie und Funktion neu zu definieren. Damit wollte ich Verantwortung für mein Handeln übernehmen, das zu Verlusten in diesem Raum geführt hatte. Ich wollte wieder erwachen und das Leben in diesen eingeschlafenen Raum einladen. Daher die Namensgebung des Rituals: “a-Wake-ning – The Living Room”.

What was it that initially drove you to join this project?

I got an email from HAU while I was working in Warsaw on a super interesting but very hectic project with a lot of challenging work. They explained they were inviting me to take part in a three-week residency, during which I’d be one of a group of Berlin-based artists working individually on their personal mourning rituals. All of it sounded so different from our usual mode of work, which is production based, that I felt: “Wow, this is really a different angle”. I understood that it was still a theatrical approach and still a production. People were going to judge the end result. But giving time to things like mourning and grief sounded very interesting. I think our entire mode of working in freelance artistic production is geared towards not dealing with these things, because they slow you down and you are supposed to keep going. So, that’s what appealed to me.

This project is about loss, letting go and farewell, but also about rituals. I assume that you have some experience of religious rituals which once were or still are meaningful to you.

I grew up in what I consider a very restrictive religion, strongly Catholic, and went to church till I was fifteen. In the Catholic Church, the Holy Mass is of course highly ritualistic and involves elements of transformation. When I was a child, I really took it for granted, because I was meant to go to church, although I didn’t want to. I completely erased that part of my growing up.

When Barbara Raes explained the project, it struck me. I thought: “Oh, my God. I don’t even know what a ritual looks like”. Which is, of course, not true, because I have a series of rituals in my daily life in order to release tension, or get my anxiety under control a bit, or just enjoy myself. Tiny little rituals for making life more liveable, be it cooking, having sex, doing a Feldenkrais Method class, lighting a candle – really cheesy things.

So, there was never any deeper relation to the rituals of the Catholic Church you were part of every Sunday? Or did you recall moments of feeling the appeal or comfort of such rituals?

The institution of the Catholic Church in Poland is so strong, so misogynistic and homophobic that you can’t accept it. It’s just unbearable. It’s really fascist. But when I was a child, and especially around Christmas and Easter, I had at moments a tenderness for Catholic rituals and how they relate to times of celebration, food and

transformation. Church architecture impressed me, too. A Catholic church is a really intense space, especially if in the Gothic or Baroque style – with all the sensual impressions, the dead men, all these things that are cruel and erotic in a way. So now, when I smell frankincense, it does take me back to those ambivalent memories of being forced to attend church and give obedience to something I didn’t quite comprehend.

Over the years I’ve come to understand the violence of religion. And it’s very hard now to separate this critical view I have from the actual spirituality.

This project is called “Unacknowledged Loss”. Have you experienced unacknowledged losses in life?

I realised it during my first Skype with Barbara. I told her about my current living situation, my current anxieties that have to do with me being in Berlin for nine years already, moving houses too often, and always in the fragile position of never having the actual formal legal contract for a place, because of money and precarity. I told Barbara that in the last three places I lived, it was my flatmates who had the tenancy agreement for the flat. If ever they felt like having their partner move in, or offering the flat to a family member, or for whatever other reason, they were in a position to ask me to move out. The last person I lived with, a dear friend of mine, would joke with me about my Berlin flat trauma. They promised they would never kick me out – and yet they did. After talking to Barbara and seeing Franziska, I realised I’m still hurt by these past situations.

How do you deal with these feelings?

I realise there is a lot of fear, because economically I’m not in a position to keep up with how Berlin is changing and with this horrendous cost increase on the real estate market. Fear is very paralysing. I had to tell myself: “Maybe in some years I won’t be able to live here” – but then where will I go? I cannot go back to Poland, because I don’t want to live there.

Talking to Barbara helped me to cope with the shame I felt subconsciously for being this “unstable” person in her mid-thirties. She suggested that moving to the next flat – my first one with a contract of my own – could be my ritual. So, I understood then that a ritual can be literally anything that is a form of relief and transition for me.

This is also a project about transition. Do you feel you’re in a transitional phase?

I’m in a phase of extreme transition, because eventually I found an apartment with a legal contract, which is changing my situation a lot. After seeing Franziska, I realised I had strong physical reactions such as anxiety, internal chaos, even insomnia these last few weeks, because of dealing with this process of change and letting go of my fear of homelessness.

Under usual circumstances, this project would be a collective experience. But in this edition, everybody was on their own. How did you feel about this?

Of course, I cannot compare it with how it should have been. But I did really want to be in this group project, where we were collectively invested in the subject and experience of grief. Because of the pandemic it turned out differently: instead of meeting as a group we stayed home, and met for a couple of hours each day on Zoom. Still, it was very important for me to stop and immerse myself in the process.

How did you feel about being part of a group you didn’t know?

I didn’t mind, because I knew that the moment would come when I would learn who the other people were. Either we would meet and know each other from the start, or we would stay online and be unable to see or touch each other – in either case this anonymity was fine. It didn’t bother me. I accepted from the start that we were not going to meet.

Plus, there were a couple of situations in which we did get to meet people, like Franziska Dieterich and Uller Gescheidel. Uller helped me very much just by confirming that it’s not egoistic to deal with this fear of homelessness.

It’s interesting that we sometimes feel much better when someone else gives us permission to grieve. I wonder whether we very often don’t allow ourselves to be really sad, because we feel we have to live up to the ideal of coping with whatever life throws at us. Why don’t we allow ourselves to carry sadness and also to embrace it?

I think what you’re saying is crucial, because I, for example, haven’t ever given myself the right to have a hard time. I think it can be terrifying to mourn, and transformation

is rarely a pleasant experience. Shedding skin and changing is just a very challenging process. From the meetings with Franziska and Uller, I learned in this project: I have a right to take the time to cry.

You describe your current personal situation as a time of transformation. On a collective level, it’s very often called a crisis. Does it feel like a crisis to you?

I feel the pandemic is very much in progress. I don’t think it’s over. I feel like it’s good that we’re optimistic, especially in a city like Berlin. It’s quite likely that there’s going to be more waves and lockdowns. But people don’t talk about it. People seem to be enjoying themselves and planning their premieres. I wonder if we’re optimistic or if we’re in denial. When I receive invitations to work on a project, I try not to get too attached to the idea that it is really going to happen, that this income is really going to come.

I think it would be great to take this particular pandemic as an opportunity to radically change how things work on this planet. Because for too long, things have been working – functioning! – only by erasing collective experiences of grief, community care and patience. Private money and power are too important. So, on a general level, I worry.

Within the “Unacknowledged Loss” project there were also other moments of connection, like delivering a poncho, preparing a lunch-box for another person, or receiving a homemade lunch and eating it in a cemetery. Did these elements give you a sense of connection?

Yes. Especially the eating part was important. Preparing food for someone I don’t know is very interesting and a great source of pleasure. Taking care, so that it’s a nicely served lunch. Trying to imagine a person’s tastes in food when you don’t know them. So of course, it’s pure intuition.

When I picked up my lunch I was told to go to the cemetery and eat it there. And then the person who made the lunch called me. It was a male voice and it sang me a song. And I must say, to have someone speak to you on the telephone while you are eating something they made for you is a very intimate experience, really. It was somewhere between tender and intimate, strangely intimate. So, that was a good moment.

What were the other good or maybe heavy moments in this project? Have any stuck in mind?

Maybe one of the strongest moments of the whole project for me was receiving the “After I Die” workbook. Barbara sent us this document in which there was a series of very specific questions about our own funeral in all its aspects. Questions like: Would you like to be buried or cremated? What kind of celebration do you want?

Who should take care of it?

These questions shook me up. I had many different thoughts at the same time. No, maybe I don’t want to return to Poland to be buried. If my mother dies before me, I won’t have to be buried in Krakow; she would never know, so it couldn’t hurt her.

Which means I could be buried here. But who am I going to make responsible for the funeral? What does it mean to ask someone about it today?

I was thinking about these things intensely and then I appointed two of my friends to take care of it. I texted them, asking if they could do this for me. I explained everything, also that I would pay for the funeral. It was a confrontational experience.

What were the most important aspects of your ritual?

I think the two most important aspects were the walk and the destruction. I and two friends whom I had chosen to be my healers walked together from the botanical garden in the north of Berlin – a place I really like, quite close to where I lived actually, at the time of the ritual – southwards through the city, to HAU3 [the project venue].

I love to walk for the sake of walking, I do it to centre myself, and to think. But I rarely walk such a long distance in the city. And about the act of destruction… it ended up being quite soft, in my case. It was also interrupted by HAU’s neighbours, who couldn’t stand the noise of the axe and baseball bat hitting old wooden and plastic objects. I sometimes think that to let go of something I need a good push. I have to give myself permission to hit out and cut loose.

Was hat dich an diesem Projekt interessiert?

Tatsächlich verfolgt mich das Thema Tod schon lange, beruflich wie privat. Im Studium habe ich gleich im ersten Semester ein Hörspiel über den Tod gemacht, später dann ein großes Projekt über Musik bei Bestattungen. Welche Musik wird bei Bestattungen verschiedener Konfessionen gespielt? Wie gehen die jeweiligen Bestatter:innen damit um? Das waren Fragen, die mich damals interessiert haben.

Das heißt, du bist als Künstler irgendwie auch ein Experte in Sachen Tod? Das war nicht so geplant. Aber es gibt darüber hinaus in meinem persönlichen Leben traumatische Erfahrungen mit dem Tod von nahen Angehörigen und Selbstmorden von Wegbegleitern in sehr jungen Jahren. Je älter man wird, desto mehr hat man mit dem Tod zu tun. Man merkt, wenn er einmal ins Leben getreten ist, geht er nicht mehr weg. Er bleibt und man muss sich mit ihm anfreunden.

Es hat mich schon immer fasziniert, dass im Tod auch eine Form des Friedens und der Ruhe liegt, die mir manchmal guttut. Die Kunstform Theater hat sehr viel mit Verlust und Tod zu tun. Es klingt vielleicht banal, aber jede Produktion bedeutet auch einen kleinen Tod, wenn sie endet. Immer wieder knüpfen sich neue Verbindungen und lösen sich wieder. Immer wieder muss man von vorne anfangen. Das ist einerseits das große Privileg dieser Kunstform, produziert aber eben auch immer wieder kleine Tode, die man nie so wirklich verarbeitet. Man macht weiter, doch eigentlich kriegt man das nie so richtig emotional aufgefangen.

Haben deine eigenen nicht anerkannten Verluste mit diesen kleinen Toden zu tun?

Man kriegt oft selber gar nicht mit, was einem verloren gegangen ist. Ich habe viel nachgedacht über dieses tolle Buch von Roger Willemsen “Der Knacks”, in dem er beschreibt, dass sein Leben irgendwann unbemerkt anders geworden ist. Er nennt es Haarrisse in den Beziehungen oder im Selbstbezug. Ermüdungsbrüche, Dinge, die sich langsam verschieben. Irgendwann stellt man fest: Ich bin nicht mehr derselbe, aber ich weiß nicht, wann es passiert ist.

In meinem Leben gibt es viele Erfahrungen von rabiaten und sehr kurzfristigen Abbrüchen und Umbrüchen. Ich habe einerseits das Gefühl, eine Kompetenz entwickelt zu haben, ziemlich schnell weitermachen zu können, und andererseits irgendwann gemerkt, dass dabei etwas auf der Strecke bleibt, dass man sich mit den Folgen dieser Abbrüche eigentlich nicht genügend hat auseinandersetzen können. Dieses

Gefühl produziert in mir eine Form von Pathologie, eine Unfähigkeit, vergessen zu können. Mich suchen manche Erinnerungen sehr stark heim. Es verschwindet nichts, sondern es ist wie ein großer Sack, den man immer voller packt und mit dem man dann weiterzieht. In bestimmten Momenten im Leben kommen diese Dinge dann wieder hoch und drängen sich auf.

Manchmal lebt man Trauer nicht richtig aus, weil man mitgetragen wird von der Dynamik des Lebens. Das kann eine sehr ambivalente Erfahrung sein.

Ja, und ich glaube, dass Kunst ein Versuch ist, dem zu begegnen, indem man besondere Momente der Auseinandersetzung intensiviert und feiert. Das Tragische daran ist nur, dass man dabei noch mehr Vergänglichkeiten produziert.

Trauer und Verluste sind starke Erfahrungen der Einsamkeit. Es gibt an dem Umgang mit Verlust einen Anteil, der untilgbar allein stattfindet. In dieser Einsamkeit beginnt man, sich Rückzugsräume zu suchen, zum Beispiel in der Kunst, im Schreiben, im Musikmachen. Und irgendwann trifft man dabei auf andere Leute in ihrer Zurückgezogenheit. Die neuen Verbindungen, die sich dann knüpfen, haben ein Fundament in dieser Einsamkeit.

Gibt es individuelle oder gemeinschaftliche Rituale, die für dein Leben wichtig sind oder waren?

In meiner Kindheit und Jugend habe ich eher selbst gemachte Familienrituale erlebt, so etwas wie regelmäßige Ausflüge in die Sauna, Feste mit Nachbar:innen, Serien, die man als Familie zusammen geschaut hat, usw. Viele Rituale, die sich in meiner Eltern- und Großelterngeneration in der DDR herausgebildet hatten, gingen nach der Wendezeit verloren. Entsprechend blieb man stark auf sich verwiesen und war gezwungen, sich selbst Rituale zu erfinden oder eben ohne sie auszukommen. Ich hatte das Glück, zu der Generation zu gehören, die von den neuen Möglichkeiten nach der Wiedervereinigung profitieren konnte: Abbrüche zu schaffen, Ortswechsel vorzunehmen, die Welt als mögliches Betätigungsfeld zu sehen – das waren für mich in erster Linie Chancen. Dieser große Raum an Möglichkeiten, den ich nicht missen möchte, produziert aber zugleich eine gewisse Ortlosigkeit und Fragmentierung der eigenen Persönlichkeit. Und damit auch die Abkoppelung von gemeinschaftsstiftenden Momenten, die Rituale mit sich bringen.

Gibt es aktuell in deinem Leben Rituale, die eine Bedeutung haben?

Als ich vor drei Jahren einen Zusammenbruch hatte, habe ich gemerkt, wie wichtig das Herausbilden von guten Gewohnheiten und Ritualen ist – gerade, wenn man älter wird und die Kräfte schwinden. Da guckt man in jüngeren Jahren noch verächtlicher drauf und hält es für unnötig. Es wird dann aber zu einem Teil der Arbeit an sich selbst, sich zum Beispiel Routinen fürs Schlafen, für die Pflege von Freundschaften und Beziehungen, für den eigenen Körper zu schaffen, und diese – so protestantisch es klingt – immer weiter einzuüben bzw. leider auch immer wieder daran zu scheitern.

Das Projekt hat viele Schichten: Tod, Abschied, Übergang. Gibt es ein Element, an das du besonders angedockt hast?

Der Fokus der Lectures lag auf dem Todesthema. Daher habe ich mich in den InputPhasen stärker mit dem Tod beschäftigt. Für mein Ritual waren dann eher die kleinen Abschiede im Leben wichtig: das Ende von Freundschaften oder Arbeitsbeziehungen, das Zerbrechen von Partnerschaften. Es ging mir darum, wie diese Abbrüche mich weiter beschäftigen und mitunter immer wieder einholen.

Als ihr für dieses Projekt angefragt wurdet, war klar, dass die Gruppe ein ganz wesentlicher Teil sein wird. Jetzt ist es ganz anders gekommen. Wie ging es dir damit?

Ich war froh, dass das HAU entschieden hat, das Projekt trotz der Situation durchzuführen. Durch die Corona-Pandemie wird das Thema noch einmal anders elementar – nicht nur, weil Menschen an dieser Krankheit sterben, sondern weil es womöglich auch um den Verlust einer Lebenswelt geht, an die wir uns gewöhnt haben, von der aber ohnehin klar ist, dass wir sie ändern müssen, weil wir nicht mehr so weiterleben können wie in den letzten Jahrzehnten. Die kuratorische Setzung, dass sich die Künstler:innen nicht begegnen und kennenlernen sollten, fand ich erst einmal interessant, weil das Projekt damit die derzeitige gesellschaftliche Situation radikalisiert.

In der Praxis habe ich das dann allerdings als weniger fruchtbar erfahren, als ich gehofft hatte. Die These, dass jede:r Einzelne aus der Gruppe mit dem Schmerz konfrontiert werden soll, einander nicht begegnen zu können, hat für mich nicht so gut funktioniert. Da ich die anderen gar nicht kannte, konnte ich auch nicht anfangen, sie zu vermissen. Ich glaube, es hätte erst mal eine andere Art der Verbindung hergestellt werden müssen, damit sich dieses Vermissen der Gemeinschaft überhaupt einstellen kann.

Es gab Versuche, Verbindungen zwischen den Teilnehmer:innen zu schaffen – ein Poncho wurde weitergegeben und jede:r sollte für eine andere Person aus dem Projekt ein Picknick vorbereiten und hat wiederum ein Lunchpaket erhalten. Wie hast du das erlebt?

Das Picknick fand ich sehr schön – als Idee, für jemanden Sorge zu tragen, den ich nicht kenne, dem ich aber aus der Entfernung Wohlwollen entgegenbringe, und dieses Wohlwollen auch von jemand anderem zu empfangen. Die Idee mit dem Poncho ist abstrakter. Interessant fand ich dabei die Erfahrung der Schwere. Dieses relativ schwere Kleidungsstück, das auf einem lag, hatte fast eine körperliche Dimension, als würde man umarmt werden oder jemand auf einem liegen.

Aber ich würde nicht sagen, dass mich die Erfahrung des Ponchotragens dieser konkreten Gruppe nähergebracht hat. Ich bräuchte dann ein paar mehr Spuren und Anknüpfungspunkte. Da fühlte ich mich ein bisschen in die Pflicht genommen, eine Imaginationsleistung zu erbringen, die von mir nicht emotional gedeckt werden konnte, weil es dafür keinen Erfahrungsraum gab.

Die Ausgestaltung dieser “Unacknowledged Loss”-Ausgabe war eine Art Experiment. Wie hast du die Kommunikation untereinander erlebt?

In den letzten Monaten konnten wir ja vielfach die Erfahrung sammeln, dass eine bestimmte Art der Auseinandersetzung im digitalen Raum schwerer zu führen ist.

Wenn wir uns dann zusätzlich auch nicht sehen, hemmt das noch mehr die Bereitschaft zu intervenieren, Diskussionsthemen anzustoßen, Gesagtes infrage zu stellen oder dem beizupflichten. Es wird dann ein relativ trauriger Akt, in dem einzelne Äußerungen ins Leere hinein gesendet werden. Das war teilweise eine ernüchternde Erfahrung.

Während des Projekts habe ich auch ein sehr starkes auf mich selbst Zurückgeworfensein empfunden. Und das, was dieses Projekt in seiner Ursprungsform sicherlich sein sollte, nämlich einen gemeinschaftlichen Umgang mit Verlust und Ritual zu suchen und zu finden, hat sich radikal ins Gegenteil verkehrt. Aber darin hat es auch eine Wahrheit zutage gefördert, nämlich, dass Verlust und Umbruch etwas sind, das man zu einem gewissen Grad immer alleine durchleben muss. Das hat mich dann – sozusagen zwangsweise – daran interessiert.

Das trifft ja auch auf die gegenwärtige Situation zu, in der viele Menschen Erfahrungen von Einsamkeit und Isolation machen. Unsere Zeit wird vielfach als Krise bezeichnet. Empfindest du das auch so?

Als Krise unter Krisen würde ich sagen oder als Krise inmitten vieler Krisen. Mein Empfinden ist, dass es in den letzten Jahren eine steigende Bereitschaft zur Antizipation von Katastrophen gegeben hat und häufig gesagt wurde: Jetzt muss mal etwas passieren! Irgendwann muss es mal knallen! Das ist zumindest für uns hier in Westeuropa lange ausgeblieben, und jetzt ist mal wirklich was passiert. Bei manchen Menschen in meinem Umfeld habe ich so etwas wie eine Erleichterung gespürt, dass es von diesen ganzen Katastrophenreden endlich Spuren gibt.

Jetzt müssen sich alle fragen: Wenn wir diese imperiale, ausbeuterische Lebensweise nicht weiterführen wollen oder irgendwann nicht mehr weiterführen können – wie wollen wir denn dann leben? Wie viel Verzicht wollen, können oder müssen wir üben? Wie viel Mitspracherecht werden wir in der Zuweisung dessen haben, was uns dann noch erlaubt ist? Das sind Fragen, die jetzt durch den akuten Fall aufs Tablett kommen. Und die werden bleiben, da bin ich mir ganz sicher. Insofern ist es ein Üben des Ernstfalls. Ein Auftakt.

Jede:r von euch hat am Schluss ein eigenes Ritual realisiert – was war zentral für dein persönliches Ritual?

Mich hat einerseits interessiert, etwas für die digitale Sphäre zu entwickeln, das keine abgefilmte Performance ist, sondern die performativen Strukturen des Internets selbst nutzt. So kam es zu dieser erst mal sehr einfachen Zusammenführung der Formate Text und Musik, die aber hoffentlich eine Frage an die Nutzenden stellt: Wie soll ich diese beiden Ebenen miteinander kombinieren? Wie rezipiere ich sie mitbzw. gegeneinander?

Und inhaltlich ging es mir andererseits darum, diese endlose einsame Arbeit des Erinnerns, der Qual der Wiederkehr des Verlusts in eine eigene künstlerische Praxis des Schreibens und Komponierens zu überführen. Vielleicht, um sich zumindest temporär von den eigenen Gespenstern zu befreien. Mit der Veröffentlichung ist dann mein Ritual beendet und es geht als mögliches Ritual an die Menschen da draußen über – oder eben an niemanden.

What was your interest in joining the project?

HAU’s initiative, which was to support a process-focused research project about loss, beyond the central narrative of mortality, riveted my interest. And since the project started just a few months into the pandemic, the topic of grief evidently had been rising to the surface of our collective experience. For most of my life I’d seen death and dying not as endings but as transformations, so I was interested also in how hope, levity and non-dualistic beliefs might play a part in our examination of how the ways we think about the rigidity of “endings” and “time” can be incorporated into this experience of discovery.

Besides death and dying, transformation, too, is important in this project. Can you relate to the idea of transformation?

Yes, I think I relate to the idea of transformation mainly through the idea of being “forever in transition”, the fact that there are not always physically real boundaries to beginnings and endings. I often think of circumstances as portals – as an entrance to a different world, to another universe, another way of being, seeing and thinking.

Often, we are given access to a portal or we create a portal; but then, those portals are usually gone shortly thereafter, or sometimes can be opened through a similar process of arranging the elements. Sometimes you also have to acknowledge that some of those portals will never exist again: they are temporary. I think that was my initial interest in thinking about what an unacknowledged loss could be; about these significant portals that had offered me great transformative experiences.

This is also a project about rituals. Do you have rituals or ritualistic practices in your life, which are or have been important to you?

Yes! The morning ritual is something that continues to evolve for me, over time.

Whether it’s about my home, my mind, my body, my wellness or the presence and existence of that which is around me, my rituals tend to be about relationships.

Sometimes my rituals have to do with work and labour, setting intentions for the day, or about socializing and integrating new behaviours or desires into my life.

When it comes to performance and music, the rituals often come back to relationships of reverence, connecting with deceased friends and ancestors to ask for guidance and to have a better understanding of what would be best for myself and others around me, in the circumstances of whatever kind of performance or art-making I am presently engaged in.

Another point of interest for me is the social rituals of gatherings and how they differ from solitary rituals. What are the reasons for, and the circumstances of, assembly?

Why, where and when do we assemble? How are we given permission? I’m interested in these kinds of question.

Do you remember rituals from your past, from your childhood?

The one that comes most clearly to mind is gathering in the evening to watch TV and have dinner – which is a very American working-class experience. I have three sisters; we are quite a big family and used to go to church every Sunday. When I was seven or eight, something bad happened at the church. Our new pastor had come in and found an older member of the community, who had fallen and been injured.

Instead of rushing to help this person, the new pastor pressed charges about them being injured in the church. As a result, our little church community fell apart. We all stopped going to church. This was a really strange experience, a kind of juncture in terms of the family’s ritualistic practices.

My parents are still religious but they never really found another church community that was such an anchor. I’m not religious anymore, but one thing from my childhood that carried over as a personal and collective ritual is group singing. Around that time, I had started performing in musicals and the church ritual transformed into the ritual of rehearsal and making performance.

Until now, the “Unacknowledged Loss” project was strongly linked to a collective experience. The sense of being part of a group can be very supportive and was an important part of the first edition. Due to the circumstances, it was very different this time. How did you feel throughout the process?

I’m friends with Liz Rosenfeld and Olympia Bukkakis and we learned by chance at the start that we were all part of the project. So, it was nice to be in dialogue about loss and grief with two people I already knew – I honestly don’t know if I could have stayed in the programme without the dialogue, without being able to process grief in real time and communicate with each other about our processes. The conversations with Liz helped me to focus on seeing this project as something for myself and for my specific experience, to zoom in on my subjectivity, which hadn’t been my central focal point these last few years.

In general, it was challenging for me to do a lot of these assignments on my own, especially as an artist whose being in the world is so much related to other people.

I understand Barbara Raes’ interest in keeping us apart (partially for safety), but I very much identify as a responder; to venture into the “Unacknowledged Loss” terrain as a solitary pursuit was not the easiest thing for me. I was super grateful to be able to crack the shell of anonymity, for this helped shape my participation and experience.

Is there any kind of regret that the concept didn’t allow for more encounters?

No, I’m one of these people who thinks that whatever happens is exactly what is supposed to happen. At some point I arrived at a good sense of personal agency, in determining what the experience was going to be about for myself; but then I also surrendered to the precariousness of our circumstances at this time. I used this opportunity to meditate creatively on the aesthetics of precarity, the cognition of precarity and attempted to learn how to be flexible and sit comfortably within the expansive unknown.

Delivering a poncho or preparing and receiving a homemade lunch and eating it at a cemetery were planned as moments of connection. Did you experience them as such?

I think I struggled to connect with some of these prompts, because in fact every waking moment and the immensity of what was unfolding in real time with the pandemic was a reminder about loss, for me, so I had to make space for levity, lightness and ease within these initiatives. The poncho was very comfortable, so I took a nap in it. The picnic in the graveyard was an impressive meal and I felt super grateful to have had such a nice luxury salmon and champagne moment amongst the dead. I kept giggling about the strangeness of my presence and activity in that circumstance.

As a person who already had enough grief on the table, in these times, I think I really struggled with the earnestness and the sombre way of talking about more loss or unacknowledged losses. Everything in the world was so dire and serious; mourning and mortality were on my mind every day, so my instinct was just to move into levity.

Which is to say, you had a hard time before, but you didn’t take these experiences into the project?

I think that as a person who often integrates reverence and mourning into my art

and music practice, the question did arise for me about what was absent. Missing from this conversation was the loss of celebration, of playfulness, of lightness and levity amidst a global public health crisis, a failing government administration, and a growing disparity between private and public resources. Where within the space of pain and suffering can there be joy and peace, if at all?

Did you find anything out about your unacknowledged losses?

I think “Unacknowledged Loss” gave me a deeper understanding of how much anger I have toward all the systems of power that quickly erase temporary autonomous queer spaces, while at the same time reminding me how very important it is to appreciate these initiatives while they fleetingly exist. I think I also realised, after the fact, how much I want to fight for and encourage others to create temporary spaces for assembly and for building new models of “home” and spaces of belonging. Trying to entangle that rage, joy and reverence in active energy will be the real post-ritual task for me.

This period of time is often called a crisis. Do you experience it as such?

It is for certain a crisis, in terms of death and dying, and the social, economic and political peril and despair. But I also believe that with crisis comes great learning and discovery. Times of crisis are often our greatest teachers; in the most challenging moments we can learn the most. So, I believe that as much as it is a crisis, it’s also a gift and an opportunity to transform how we think, how we are, how we treat other people and life on earth, how we relate to our own mortality. For me, crisis is an opportunity to grow and learn and change.

I have a lot of conversations with friends about the anxiety of things getting back to normal, about how people would perhaps not grow, learn and change from this experience, nor become more empathic, considerate of, and compassionate towards, others on this planet. This makes me more frightened than the Coronavirus itself. I also believe that if we don’t learn the lessons this time, something else will happen to teach us what we need to learn.

Coming back to the project, I would also like to know what still resonates or remains as good or difficult moments?

I think what resonates most for me, after the fact, is the spaciousness of having been invited into a project that wasn’t so anchored to its outcome, and how rare it is, especially when working with themes of grief, mourning and loss, to find there is a restful space in which to nurture these inquiries, beyond any measurement of their effectiveness or quantifications of success. I’m also super grateful to have had conversations with Liz and Olympia that made this process and project feel lighter, easier and more human. But I struggled with the coldness, the earnestness and the sombreness. Not once in the process did I hear laughter and that was hard, for me.

Most of the lectures and all of the group talks happened via Zoom. It’s hard to imagine a vivid, sensitive exchange under these circumstances, with people you don’t know.

You are right. If there had been an opportunity for us to have another form of dialogue, things would have been so different. I think it would have resulted in a much more integrated and evolutionary relationship to thinking about grief and loss; and, too, in much more space for processing.

How would that other dialogue have looked?

It’s hard to criticise this process, because I know how much love and care went into its making; but what I would have loved is to see an invitation from Barbara up front, at the get-go, for her to bring us all together and discuss the interests and incentives of “Unacknowledged Loss”, inviting the artists assembled for this project to collectively design our actions and assignments. It would have been great to ask at the start what our individual and collective desires and interests around loss are. Could our goals and interests have designed and diversified this project’s initiatory perspective?

I am curious about how we can learn and integrate compassion and empathy into our daily lives by creating new systems for naming and facing our grievances together. Within the stillness of the isolation induced by this pandemic, I think there is a remarkable opportunity to understand our collective struggle on a deeper level, by developing relationships between people. But perhaps that’s a matter for another programme called Unacknowledged Assemblies!

What are the most important aspects of your ritual?

It was important for me to do something that felt healing and nurturing at this time of chaos, asking my deceased friends for help in determining what would come in the years ahead. It was important for me to go from being in my domestic home space and to establish a connection to the home in relation to the spaces that had been lost. It was important for me to end my ritual in the social space of the water, to create an offering and to receive something in return.

Was hat dich an diesem Projekt interessiert?

Ich glaube, das war die Tatsache, dass hier Themen verhandelt werden, mit denen ich mich eigentlich in meiner Praxis nicht so sehr beschäftige oder womit ich mich bisher nicht auseinandergesetzt habe. Die Fragen nach Verlust, Trauer, Abschiednehmen – das sind in erster Linie persönliche Fragen, die ich gerne in einem größeren Kontext begreifen würde.

Das Projekt heißt “Unacknowledged Loss”. Was sind für dich unbemerkte Verluste?

Mit Uller Gscheidel, dem Bestatter, habe ich über Beziehungen, aber auch sehr klassische Verluste wie den Tod gesprochen. Uller hat etwas sehr Spannendes gesagt, nämlich, dass man durch eine Trennung nicht nur die andere Person verliert, sondern sich auch von der Person verabschieden muss, die man selbst zusammen mit dem anderen Menschen war. Das kann natürlich auch passieren, wenn eine Person stirbt.

Man kann sich dann nicht mehr in Relation zu diesem Menschen verstehen und muss sich von der Person, die man selbst war, oder dem Verständnis von sich selbst verabschieden. Ich glaube, das ist etwas, was man zu selten anerkennt.

Ihr solltet einen Fragebogen ausfüllen für die eigene Beerdigung – wie war das für dich?

Das war schwierig, weil man denkt, das ist jetzt eigentlich der falsche Zeitpunkt oder man würde den Tod damit beschwören oder näher an sich ranlassen. Das ist natürlich Quatsch. Ich glaube, ich würde das gerne noch einmal “in Wirklichkeit” machen, das heißt, mich mit Familienangehörigen und Freund:innen hinsetzen und sagen, okay, jetzt beantworten wir diese Fragen zusammen. Und vielleicht muss ich das sogar in zwei Jahren wieder neu machen. Denn diese Überlegungen muss man eigentlich ständig aktualisieren.

In “Unacknowledged Loss” geht es auch um Rituale. Gibt es in deinem Leben individuelle oder kollektive Rituale, die für dich wichtig sind oder waren?

Mein Zwillingsbruder und ich sind sehr spirituell aufgewachsen. Meine Mutter war zeitweise praktizierende Buddhistin und hatte auch ein starkes Interesse am Hinduismus. Als Kinder sind wir mit ihr viel durch Deutschland gereist und haben buddhisti-

sche Camps besucht. Wir waren auch für zwei Monate in Indien und haben dort in Ashrams gelebt und meine Mutter hat dort gearbeitet. Das war ein anderer kultureller Kontext, in dem spirituelle Praktiken Teil des Alltags sind. Meine Mutter hat viele dieser Praktiken übernommen und für sich adaptiert. Sie hat uns in diesem Sinne auch hinduistisch-spirituell taufen lassen, uns Mantren vorgesungen und mit uns meditiert.

Die Spiritualität und die Religiosität meiner Mutter sind dabei aber sehr kreativ und situationsabhängig. Zum Beispiel, wenn wichtige Events bevorstehen, wie etwa ein Vorstellungsgespräch, dann macht meine Mutter immer Knoten, die uns Glück bringen sollen. Manche dieser Rituale habe ich vielleicht unbewusst übernommen. Ich könnte jetzt aber nicht genau benennen, welche das sind, bzw. äußert sich das nicht in der gleichen rituellen Praxis wie bei ihr.

Gibt es Rituale, die für dein gegenwärtiges Leben wichtig sind?

Ich glaube, unser gemeinsames familiäres Leben hat ganz viele rituelle Aspekte, aber die würden mein Bruder und ich nicht so benennen. Wir haben zum Beispiel eine sehr gute Streitkultur miteinander, also nicht nur wir beide, sondern auch mit unserer Mutter. Wir können unglaublich laut und leidenschaftlich miteinander streiten und sind dabei manchmal auch sehr wütend aufeinander, aber wir alle wissen, dass es danach diesen Moment der Ruhe gibt, in dem wir uns wieder versöhnen, und dass keiner von uns am nächsten Tag nachtragend ist.

Wie hast du die Reflexion auf die Bedeutung ritueller Praktiken in diesem Projekt erlebt?

Barbara Raes hat für sich eine sehr spezifische Definition gefunden und sie teilweise mit ethnografischen Ergebnissen und einer Grafik unterfüttert. Dazu gehörte auch die Vorstellung, dass eine rituelle Praktik mit dem Label der Produktivität oder als erfolgreich bezeichnet wird, wenn sie auf eine bestimmte Art abläuft. Das heißt, da wird eine vermeintlich universelle Geste oder Praktik vorausgesetzt, die dann statistisch abgebildet werden kann. Das habe ich hinterfragt. Aus meiner Sicht ist dieser weiße, westliche Blick auf andere kulturelle Praktiken schwierig, weil damit spezifische Praktiken und Rituale verallgemeinert werden, um einem universellen Anspruch gerecht zu werden. Darüber werden häufig die Partikularität und der Kontext dieser Praktik ausgeblendet. Wie stehen die Praktizierenden selbst zu diesem Ritual? Welche grafische oder anderweitig visuelle Abbildung würden die Praktizierenden für ihr Ritual nutzen? Hinzu kommt, dass es in der weißen westlichen Welt ja auch ein Begehren nach nicht-weißen “exotischen” und spirituellen Praktiken und Produkten

gibt. Dieses Begehren sollte erst einmal benannt werden, bevor man sich seiner Begriffe bedient.

Was wäre aus deiner Sicht ein angemessenerer Umgang mit dem Ritualbegriff?

Ich würde die Idee des Rituals eher in einer undefinierten Schwebe behalten. Und ich würde einer rituellen Praktik diesen westlichen Produktivitätsgedanken, dass etwas glücken oder nicht glücken kann, dass es Effizienz im Ergebnis geben muss, gar nicht zuschreiben. Ich glaube, für mich wäre im Rahmen des Projekts Vielfältigkeit wichtig gewesen. Zum Beispiel, indem gesagt wird, wir haben hier eine Definition, die sehr spezifisch geprägt ist. Aber wir sind neun Leute und wie wäre es, wenn wir alle unsere Definitionen teilen und darüber ein neues Verständnis produzieren können, was ein Ritual alles sein kann?

Bist du mit Barbara Raes und den anderen Teilnehmer:innen darüber in den Dialog gekommen?

Ich habe das angesprochen, doch es gab keine sehr ausgiebige Diskussion darüber.

Das Format der Zoom-Gespräche hat es aus meiner Sicht nicht wirklich zugelassen, dass man sich in der Gruppe gut mit solchen Fragen auseinandersetzen kann. Das ist für mich aber auch okay. Ich habe trotzdem etwas davon mitgenommen und finde die Fragestellung interessant.

In den vorigen Ausgaben war “Unacknowledged Loss” ein Projekt, das stark mit dem Erleben der Gruppe zusammenhing. In diesem Jahr war bedingt durch die Corona-Kontaktbeschränkungen alles anders. Hast du die Präsenz der anderen Künstler:innen vermisst? Oder hast du dich den anderen trotzdem verbunden gefühlt?

Ich habe nicht verstanden, warum wir künstlich anonymisiert wurden. Wenn wir im Zoom verbunden waren, haben immer nur wenige Leute gesprochen; es gab keine regen Diskussionen. Ich glaube, das liegt auch daran, dass man es nicht gewöhnt ist, so ins Leere, Unbekannte zu sprechen und sich in einer solchen Situation zu öffnen.

Das war eine Hürde, an der wir stehen geblieben sind.

Wie ich es verstanden habe, war es Teil des Konzepts, die Anonymität zuzuspitzen. Gleichzeitig gab es Versuche, Verbindungen zwischen den Teilnehmer:innen zu schaffen: die Weitergabe eines Ponchos und die Zubereitung eines Picknicks für eine andere Person. Wie hast du darauf reagiert?

Das Picknick war für mich eine der besten Erfahrungen. Sich Zeit zu nehmen, für jemand Unbekanntes etwas zu essen vorzubereiten – in dieser Handlung wird für mich die Menschlichkeit der anderen Person und mein Zugang zu ihr total klar. Dass ich mir Gedanken mache, was dieser Person guttun würde, ohne irgendein Vorurteil – das ist eine Aufgabe, in der Fürsorge und Solidarität als alltägliche Praxis ganz deutlich werden. Umgekehrt wusste ich, als ich mit dem Lunch alleine auf dem Friedhof saß, dass man aneinander denkt und sich gedanklich umeinander kümmert – ohne sich zu begegnen. Beides waren für mich sehr schöne Erfahrungen.

Die Weitergabe des Ponchos wiederum hat für mich gar nicht funktioniert. Ich habe die Idee mit dem Kleidungsstück auch fast ein bisschen übergriffig wahrgenommen, vielleicht weil Kleidung etwas sehr Persönliches ist. Aber auch weil dieses Objekt für mich ein gutes Beispiel der bereits beschriebenen Exotisierung nicht-weißer kultureller Objekte war. Warum handelt es sich um einen Poncho und keinen Pullover? Ich hatte für mich entschieden, dass ich den Poncho nicht tragen möchte, deswegen konnte ich gar nichts weiter damit anstellen, außer dass er in meiner Wohnung präsent war.

Das Format des diesjährigen “Unacknowledged Loss”-Projekts war der aktuellen Situation mitsamt allen coronabedingten Restriktionen geschuldet. Es fällt in eine Zeit, die oft als Krise beschrieben wird. Würdest du das, was wir gerade erleben, als Krise bezeichnen?

Ich denke, es gibt keine krisenfreien Zeiten. Ich würde eher davon reden, dass ständig Krisenherde kochen. Und der eine kocht gerade besonders heiß für bestimmte Gruppierungen, zu denen ich mich auch zählen würde. Vielleicht ist es sogar eher so, dass bestimmte Gruppen, die jetzt besonders betroffen sind, eine Art Krisenresistenz haben oder ein Leben in ständiger Krise gewohnt sind. Für mich ist finanzielle Unsicherheit schon immer Teil meines Lebens gewesen.

Inwieweit hat diese Krise deine künstlerische Arbeit betroffen?

Ohne Corona-Krise hätte ich 2020 total gut dagestanden. Mein ganzes Jahr war schon mit Terminen, Gastspielen und Jobangeboten durchgeplant. Das ist zum ersten Mal so

gewesen und die ganzen Absagen sind eher ein Rückschritt zum Normalzustand.

Natürlich ist es insgesamt schwieriger geworden. Auf längerfristige Sicht finde ich die Situation total unsicher. Wir machen jetzt neue Gastspieltermine aus, aber niemand weiß, ob im Herbst irgendetwas stattfinden wird. Das ist noch mal eine andere Art der Ungewissheit. Gleichzeitig weiß ich, wenn es schlimm kommt, müsste ich halt wieder in die Lohnarbeit gehen: Einzelhandel, Putzen, Unterrichten, Kinderbetreuung, Kellnern. Ich habe schon sehr viel gemacht.

Welche guten oder schweren Momente gab es noch während des “Unacknowledged Loss”-Projekts?

Das Treffen mit Liz Rosenfeld war ein sehr schöner Moment. Sie hat das Projekt dokumentiert und künstlerisch begleitet und mir erschien es sinnvoll, dass es eine Person gibt, die durch die vielen Konversationen ein Wissen weiterträgt, wie eine Art Container. Das hat den Austausch total bereichert.

Jede:r von euch hat am Schluss ein eigenes Ritual realisiert – was war zentral für dein persönliches Ritual?

Ich glaube mir war wichtig, das Ritual als alltägliche Praxis zu inszenieren. Ich habe meinen Zwillingsbruder auf eine Fahrradtour eingeladen. Wir haben uns ein Tandem gemietet und sind damit an für unsere Biografie bedeutende Orte gefahren. Das Haus in Schöneberg, in dem meine Mutter gelebt hat, als sie mit uns schwanger war, die ehemalige Wohnung und das Grab unserer Großeltern in Spandau sowie der Ort, an dem sie unseren Vater kennengelernt hat. Insgesamt sind wir fast siebzig Kilometer gefahren und waren den ganzen Tag unterwegs. So viel gemeinsame Zeit, in der es kein produktives Ziel außer der zurückzulegenden Strecke gab, haben wir schon lange nicht mehr miteinander verbracht. Das Tandemfahren war für mich als synchronisierende körperliche Praxis interessant. Wir haben uns dabei auch optisch synchronisiert und trugen die gleichen Outfits, so dass auch Passant:innen und Außenstehende uns als kuriose zusammengehörige Einheit wahrgenommen haben. Ich denke, dass das Rituelle sich erst im Nachhinein herstellt. Wir haben unseren gemeinsamen Kindheitserinnerungen eine weitere, vielleicht etwas “konstruierte” hinzugefügt, deren Bedeutung und vielleicht auch Wirkung sich erst über die Zeit herausstellen wird. Wie verändert diese Erfahrung unser Verhältnis zueinander, unser Verständnis von Individualität oder auch einfach nur unsere Einstellung zum Fahrradfahren?

Was hat dich an dem Projekt interessiert?

Eigentlich ist dieses Projekt eher zu mir gekommen als ich zu ihm. Das HAU Hebbel am Ufer hat mich dazu eingeladen, weil ich mich mit Dingen wie Verlust, Flüchtigkeit und Tod in den letzten Jahren viel beschäftigt habe.

Gab es dafür einen besonderen Grund?

Das Interesse hat biografische Wurzeln, da ich mit Mitte zwanzig zwei prägende Erfahrungen hatte, die mich dem Tod nähergebracht haben. Und natürlich ist es ein Thema, das uns alle früher oder später betrifft – in den meisten Fällen sehr unberechenbar und plötzlich. In unserer westlichen Gesellschaft und dieser beschleunigten Zeit fehlt der Raum, sich mit dem Tod zu beschäftigen. Den Tod in die künstlerische Arbeit zu integrieren bedeutet, den Raum dafür zu öffnen.

Was waren das für Erfahrungen mit dem Tod? Ich wurde von einer homophoben Person krankenhausreif geschlagen – am Kottbusser Tor in einer Samstagnacht im Sommer. Es war brechend voll, aber keiner hat mir geholfen. Die Person war sehr brutal und hat verbalisiert, sie wolle mich töten. Diese Gewalt hat mich in einer Phase getroffen, in der ich sehr instabil und schwach war.

Am nächsten Tag bin ich von einem Freund, den ich um Hilfe gebeten hatte, im Stich gelassen worden. Die Gewalt und das menschliche Drumherum haben mich sehr enttäuscht. Zwei Tage darauf habe ich einen Selbstmordversuch unternommen und bin im Krankenhaus gelandet.

Das klingt nach starken schmerzhaften Erfahrungen. Haben sie dein Leben in ein Davor und Danach geteilt?

Es war auf jeden Fall ein sehr großer Bruch, der vieles in mir verändert hat. Dennoch sehe ich mein Leben als ein Kontinuum. Mein Vertrauen wurde stark angeknackst, ist aber nicht vollständig verloren gegangen. Im Rückblick bin ich dankbar für meine Erfahrungen mit dem Tod; dadurch wurde ich gezwungen, mich mit diesem Thema auseinanderzusetzen. Das hat mich sehr bereichert und vieles an meiner Lebenseinstellung geändert und geprägt.

Gibt es in deinem Leben auch nicht anerkannte Verluste, die du erst mit der Zeit entdeckt hast?

Ich tue mich schwer, etwas als nicht anerkannten Verlust zu definieren und in meinem Leben zu identifizieren. Für mich bedeutet der Tod keinen Stillstand, kein Ende. Ich glaube, dass das Universum und wir Menschen aus Energien bestehen. Gerade fließt die Energie durch meinen Körper; irgendwann geht sie raus und dann ist mein Körper tot und leblos. Aber die Energie bleibt im Universum. Energien transformieren sich, doch sie verschwinden nie, sondern bleiben immer im Gleichgewicht.

Ich stelle mir vor, wie viele andere Tierspezies vor uns gelebt haben, und dass wir nur ein Augenzwinkern in der Timeline der Geschichte sind. Wir sterben, um Platz für andere Lebewesen machen. Das ist ein schöner Gedanke für mich. Deswegen tue ich mich sehr schwer mit dem Begriff Verlust.

Gibt es in deinem Leben individuelle oder kollektive Rituale, die dir wichtig waren oder sind?

Meine Eltern haben sich sehr bemüht, meine Schwester und mich zweisprachig zu erziehen und uns beide – die deutsche und türkische – Kultur nahezubringen. Das heißt, an Weihnachten haben wir zu viert immer etwas Schönes gegessen, dann gab es Bescherung. Dieses Weihnachtsritual haben wir nicht aus religiösen, sondern kulturellen Gründen begangen. Genauso haben wir die Tradition des muslimischen Zuckerfestes gefeiert. Dazu gehören auch Besuche bei den Großeltern. Dabei werden die Hände der Älteren geküsst; die Jüngeren kriegen Geld. Mein Opa war an diesen muslimischen Festtagen mit uns in der Stadt und wir haben neue Schuhe bekommen.

Heute unterscheide ich zwischen einmaligen Ritualen und solchen, für die Wiederholungen wichtig sind. Ich mache mich nicht gerne abhängig, deswegen habe ich keine wiederholenden Rituale für mich aufgebaut. Den Gedanken, dass ich immer etwas Bestimmtes tun würde, wenn dieses oder jenes passiert, empfinde ich als Zwang bzw.

Abhängigkeit. Und das lehne ich ab.

Interessant, was du mit Ritualen verbindest ...

Bei einmaligen Ritualen ist es anders. Wenn ich zum Beispiel in eine neue Wohnung ziehe, in der ich mich länger aufhalten werde, setze ich mich auf den Boden, stelle mich dem Raum vor und sage innerlich: Danke, dass ich hier sein darf für die nächsten sechs Wochen.

Ich habe versucht, ein kollektives Ritual zu entwickeln. Während meiner letzten Beziehung war ich oft beruflich unterwegs und habe gemerkt, dass mein Partner und ich während dieser Zeit ganz unterschiedliche Erfahrungen machen und in völlig anderen Realitäten leben. Wieder zueinander zu kommen ist dann manchmal sehr schwer. Wir haben versucht, diese Wiedersehensschwierigkeiten über ein Ritual zu lösen und die ersten zwei Stunden der Begegnung ganz still miteinander zu verbringen – so dass der Körper und die Energien ankommen können und wir erst dann anfangen, miteinander zu sprechen. Dieses Ritual hat sich bei uns nicht etabliert. Aber ich denke grundsätzlich, dass Rituale hilfreich sein können, um eine gemeinsame Ebene der Begegnung zu schaffen.

In der vorigen Ausgabe war “Unacknowledged Loss” ein Projekt, in dem die Gruppe eine große Rolle spielte. Dieses Mal war coronabedingt alles anders – wie hast du die Arbeit erlebt?

Einerseits war die Zeit sehr besonders, sehr eigenartig und einsam. Andererseits dachte ich, Verlust ist eine sehr persönliche und subjektive Erfahrung. Jeder Mensch geht alleine durch seine Trauer. Von daher hat es für mich auch Sinn gemacht, damit alleine zu sein. Aber der Austausch hat mir schon gefehlt. Und die Gespräche über Zoom waren absolut nicht befriedigend.

Durch die Anonymität der digitalen Begegnungen wurde das Gefühl der Einsamkeit auf die Spitze getrieben. Ihr hattet aber auch reale Begegnungen – was ist dir davon in Erinnerung geblieben?

Innerhalb dieser vier Wochen gab es nur mit Franziska Dieterich, Uller Gscheidel und Liz Rosenfeld reale Begegnungen. Das Treffen mit Franziska fand ich sehr anregend.

Es war spannend zu erfahren, wie Trauma chemisch, biologisch und anatomisch funktioniert.

Franziska hat mit mir eine Übung zu meinen persönlichen Grenzen gemacht, wobei sie langsam auf mich zu lief und ich Stopp sagen sollte, wenn sich irgendwas in mir energetisch verschiebt. Ich habe sehr früh Stopp gesagt, als sie noch mitten im Raum war. Das war total komisch für mich, weil ich aus dem Arbeitskontext diese Grenzen gar nicht kenne. Als Tänzer:innen rollen wir übereinander, kommen uns sehr nah – da gibt es keine Grenzen bzw. wir übergehen sie einfach, weil die Arbeit es von einem verlangt. In einem persönlichen Kontext meine Grenzen so früh und so deutlich zu spüren, war neu und interessant für mich.

Es zeigt vielleicht auch, wie sehr man sich als professionelle Person von der privaten Person unterscheidet. Es gab Versuche, euch als Gruppe jenseits von direkter Begegnung zu verbinden: Ein Poncho wurde weitergegeben und jede:r sollte für eine andere Person aus dem Projekt ein Picknick vorbereiten und hat wiederum ein Lunchpaket erhalten. Wie hast du das erlebt?

Das Picknick war eine stärkere Erfahrung als die Weitergabe des Ponchos. Die Idee des Picknicks – Care-Giving, Care-Taking – empfand ich als sehr präsent. Beide Rollen – etwas zu geben und etwas zu bekommen – waren sehr schön. Als ich das Picknick für die fremde Person vorbereitete, habe ich allerdings festgestellt, dass ich so etwas für mich selbst noch niemals gemacht habe. Ich dachte, jetzt stehe ich eine Stunde früher auf und kaufe diese Sachen ein – warum habe ich das nie für mich gemacht?

Das könntest du dir ja auch selber mal geben, ein bisschen Self-Care.

Als Objekt fand ich den Poncho sehr schön, aber ich habe mich durch ihn nicht mit den anderen verbunden gefühlt.

Dieses Projekt findet in einer sehr besonderen Zeit statt, die in den letzten Monaten häufig als Krise beschrieben wurde. Stimmst du dem zu?

Ich würde es nicht als Krise bezeichnen. Krise ist für mich negativ konnotiert. Ich würde sagen: Es ist auf jeden Fall ein Bruch mit bisher gewohnten Strukturen, mit einem vertrauten Ablauf. Ein Ausnahmezustand.

Wie ergeht es dir mit diesem Ausnahmezustand?

Sehr wechselhaft. Ich hatte eine schwierige Woche, aber im Großen und Ganzen geht es mir sehr gut und ich bin sehr dankbar. Nicht dass Menschen sterben, aber dass alles etwas entschleunigt wurde oder sogar zum Stillstand gekommen ist. Ich habe festgestellt, dass ich sehr viele Sachen bedaure. Ich hatte vorher einen sehr rastlosen Alltag und nie freie Tage, musste immer von A nach B, von Projekt zu Projekt. Ich hab mich kurz vor dem Burn-out gefühlt und es ist gut, jetzt diese fremdbestimmte Auszeit zu haben, denn ich selbst konnte diese Bremse nicht ziehen.

Bewirkt diese Pause eine Veränderung in dir?

Ja, ich merke, dass ich mehr Zeit mit Leuten verbringen möchte, die mir nahe sind, und mehr Qualitätszeit erleben möchte.

Was mir zusetzt, ist der Begriff systemunrelevant für so viele Arbeitsfelder, auch für die Kunst. Das finde ich sehr unsensibel. Schwierig war auch das Gefühl, von meinem Arbeitgeber im Stich gelassen zu werden. Als Gastkünstler habe ich in bestimmten Institutionen wegen des Ausfalls der Performance – anders als meine Kolleg:innen mit Festanstellung im selben Ensemble – kein Gehalt bekommen. Dadurch ist mir deutlich geworden, dass freischaffende Künstler:innen immer die schlechtesten Karten haben – gerade in der Tanzkunst. Dafür kam aber zu meiner positiven Überraschung seitens des Staats sehr schnell die Hilfe für Freischaffende.

Dennoch bleibt das Gefühl der nicht ausreichenden Wertschätzung für die Kunst und Kultur auch in dieser Zeit bestehen, so wie bereits vor Ausbruch der Pandemie. Während volle Flugzeuge abheben und an einem Black-Friday-Verkaufswochenende die Geschäfte mit Menschenmassen überquellen, müssen Theater mit ihren abgebauten Tribünen, ihren mit großem Abstand arrangierten Sitzplätzen und sorgfältig erarbeiten Hygienekonzepten geschlossen bleiben – das ist mir ein Rätsel. Hinzu kommt die harsche Kritikkultur in der freien Szene; dass bestimmte Leute sich selbst ermächtigen, Stücke ständig zu bewerten. Kunst sollte wertfrei sein, doch in einem kapitalistischen System hat so etwas keinen Platz. Das wird gerade sehr deutlich. An diesen Fragen hatte ich ein bisschen zu kauen. Aber das ist auch gut.

Was bedeuten diese Erfahrungen für dich als Künstler?

Mir ist aufgefallen, dass ich meine Arbeit mit sehr viel Leidenschaft, Schmerz und Schweiß mache, aber mein Körper in den letzten Jahren dadurch richtig kaputtgegangen ist. Ich habe mich gefragt: Ist es das eigentlich wert? Was ist mir wichtig?

Will ich wirklich pausenlos arbeiten? Die Arbeit als meine tragende Säule, an die ich mich so vertrauensvoll über die letzten Jahre gelehnt habe, ist im März sehr plötzlich umgefallen. Diese Fragen und die Situation haben ein paar Werte in mir verschoben.

Jede:r von euch hat am Schluss von “Unacknowledged Loss” ein eigenes Ritual realisiert – was war zentral für dein persönliches Ritual?

“Extinct” ist mein Trauer-/Abschiedsritual für alle Rohstoffe und all unsere Mitwesen der Erde, die im vergangenen Jahr dem menschlichen Handeln zum Opfer gefallen sind. Zwar ist die Klimakrise in den Vordergrund der Politik und in das Bewusstsein der Gesellschaft gerückt. Die Demonstrationen sind ein Aufruf zum Handeln. Und die Dringlichkeit erfordert den Blick stets vorwärts. Jedoch gibt es keine Zeit bzw. keine Gelegenheit, um um die bereits ausgerotteten Rohstoffe und Lebewesen zu trauern.

ist kein natürlicher Werdegang, sondern unserem menschlichen Handeln auf dieser Erde geschuldet. Mir ist es persönlich wichtig gewesen, diesen beschämenden Verlust wertzuschätzen und von all diesen Rohstoffen und Lebewesen einen respektvollen Abschied zu nehmen.

What was your role in the project?

I am not sure there’s a precise job description! I was invited by HAU Hebbel am Ufer to make an experimental portrait of each artist participating in “Unacknowledged Loss”, based on the final outcome of their research during the project, which people were calling a ritual. But I also took part in the online lectures and created a ritual of my own.

How did you start to work with the artists?

It was very clear from the beginning that I didn’t want merely to document the rituals, didn’t want to just show up, walk in and film. I needed first to gain the artists’ trust, so I met each of them at the start, one by one, kind of blind-date style. I texted them in the morning without telling them who I was, and asked them to meet me at a spot which was meaningful to them, or which they had memories of. Sometimes, it was a very specific spot, like, by a certain rock in a particular park. In other cases, I went by people’s homes.

With all of them I had wonderful, very emotional discussions. I really appreciated how much they trusted me. So, I ended up on a journey with these artists. That was one of the most incredible parts of the project for me.

How did you work on the videos?

I really enjoyed the intensity of the shoots. I was trying to be with them as much as I could. At the same time, I was reflecting on my own role: Who am I? Who am I as the witness? How can I really be here with these people? It was really important for me to be as present as possible. It wasn’t about me making a film. It was about experiencing their ritual.

In general, I’m very much interested in the question of how people feel seen. I really think a lot about this, particularly when I make my own performance work, when I’m moving or dancing on stage, with this sense of being a body being seen, and of how it’s being seen; and about how, in many cases, you can feel the most unseen of all while you are performing. I approached each artist and their ritual as if I were making a cinematic portrait of them, and of this particular moment they were in.

What drove you to join the project?

I am currently dealing in my own work with the topic of hospice, through queer projections and embodiment, so of course this topic really spoke to me. It was exciting for me to know that the group of artists in this project wouldn’t have to make a public presentation of their work, particularly given that all of them are performers.

When Barbara Raes explained her concept about unacknowledged loss to me, I thought: “Wow, here at last is a project which deals with loss without focusing on death”. However, it turned out during the first week that the focus on death was very much present, and not just because of the state of the world; no, every lecture or talk was very much about death and dying and the end of life, rather than on what unacknowledged loss could be, above and beyond the death of a living being.

What is an unacknowledged loss for you?

I think unacknowledged losses happen constantly in everyday life. We go through unacknowledged losses regularly, like, maybe even hourly, and we don’t necessarily recognise them as such. Which is to say, that everything we say or do has already happened, is already said and gone in a second. In my view, that touches on the idea of an unacknowledged loss. Another big question for me is: What’s the experience of unacknowledged loss within an artistic process? How productive can it be?

Do you have rituals which are or have been meaningful to you?

I have a hard time with the word ritual, actually, because I think that ritual is a very misused framework, particularly in the public realm. I am quite turned off by the overt use of ritual imagery in contemporary western art, as often there is a lack of acknowledgment in the appropriation of ritual histories by artists who are trying to create some kind of representational form of magic in their work. Ritual is important inasmuch as it’s a means to create a space for yourself in which to process your experience, your sense of self. A space where you can pursue self-reflection and conscious intentions. I think everyone has rituals that are personally important to them, whether they call them rituals or not. I certainly do.

Can you remember ritualistic practices from your past, from your childhood?

I grew up in a very liberal Jewish family, and we used to sit down to have Shabbat dinner every Friday night. We lit the candles and included many ritual elements, but none of it had anything to do with God. It just had to do with the fact that my family

used the Shabbat as a pretext, since Friday was actually the only day of the week my parents, my grandparents, my sister and I could find the time to sit down together.

It was also a time of deep political discussion and debate. There were certainly other regular events when I was growing up that I would loosely refer to as rituals, but they were not specifically spiritual. For example, in the summer, every Saturday at 10am, from age ten to thirteen, I would ride my bike to the local cruising area near my grandmother’s home, buy a Snickers bar on my way, and hide behind the trees to watch men having sex. That was certainly an extremely important coming-of-age “ritual” for me.

So actually, with your family, it was a sort of cultural and communicative occasion with ritualistic elements?

Absolutely. I also think it was more an acknowledgment of a past and a future than of religion or God. My grandparents are Holocaust survivors. On every Jewish holiday we acknowledged a split in the family: half of us, my father and my grandfather, went to the synagogue, the other half, my mother and my grandmother, were extremely against instrumentalised religion. I’ve always seen my Jewish identity primarily in regard to culture, politics and history, especially in regard to anti-nationalist politics.

On these Friday nights – did you talk about the past and what your grandparents had experienced?

Oh, that is so complicated. These talks were more like arguments about Israel. They were all very anti-Zionist. My mother’s first language was German, but it was very clear that they did not want us to learn German, which is why I have such a block with the German language. Within the family it was really like a language of secrets.

And the past, too, was one big secret. My grandparents didn’t want to talk about it, but they wanted us to know what they had been through. There was really this sense of: “Never forget!” Nobody was explicit about what had happened to them. But we knew!

So, the past stayed in a kind of acknowledged-unacknowledged realm?

Yes, I suppose so. With some passive-aggressive moments of “You kids will never understand what we went through – and we refuse to tell you about it”.

To return to your relationship to rituals today…

I found my own sort of ritual space through queerness and building my own discourse, vernacular and community. It was important to make space for those people and bodies who feel unseen and/or on the outside of their identification or physicality. That’s definitely where rituals started to bloom in my independent life, once away from my blood-family history.

You integrated your own ritual into the “Unacknowledged Loss” project by tattooing little symbols on your body.

I have a very long relationship with tattoos and I incorporate tattooing into my artistic practice a lot. For me, it is a way to archive experiences and I could also think of it as a ritual. So, I asked each of the artists to create a very small, simple symbol that could represent the work they had done. I had the symbols tattooed over the root chakra, which is where you hold feelings of loss. I was so appreciative of how much each of these artists opened up and trusted me that I wanted to create a ritual that would honour the intimate relationship between us.

This edition of “Unacknowledged Loss” was realised in a time which is generally referred to as a crisis. Does it feel like a crisis to you?

It certainly does, on both micro and macro levels. I find this time not so much shocking as extremely devastating. What I do find shocking about it is that people seem to think this will be ending soon. In my opinion, the “It’s been forever! Why isn’t this over yet?” comment is exactly the root of why we are in this moment, globally. The white western perspective never expected that its own world could be so affected by a global pandemic, while the white western perspective was itself already a crisis of neoliberalism. But this is nothing new. I don’t think it’s easy to sum up this moment as one singular “crisis”. It’s a crisis that has been on the horizon for a long time, a crisis built on the back of many previous or long-standing crises. So yes, I feel it, absolutely.

How does this crisis affect your personal life?

I still feel extremely privileged to be experiencing this moment within the system I grew up in. We have health care. We have a government that, with all its flaws, is nonetheless responding in a way that many wealthy governments with resources are not. On a personal level, I suppose, I don’t feel it’s a crisis. I feel it’s more of a duty to live through this time providing as much respect and care as I can to my friends, family and community, especially given the resources that I am blessed to continue to have access to. As we have heard and long since know, in many iterations, for most people the crisis didn’t start with the pandemic, and it won’t end with it.

What is the outcome of the “Unacknowledged Loss” process for you personally?

I’m definitely going through a transformation. I’m not saying that I won’t ever again make something for a theatre or an art institution, but certainly I’ve a desire to shift the system from within, as a worker, and I’m hearing from other artists about their desire to do the same. I would be so happy to be regularly in this position, in projects like this, so as to be able to hold space or make space or create space for other people to think their way through their own process. I really enjoyed that so much more than I do the pressure of making my own work in this linear scheme of “institution > show > audience”. So, the whole experience made me think a lot about how I want to progress artistically.

Dr. Elisabeth Nehring conducted interviews with the artists participating in “Unacknowledged Loss II”, on behalf of HAU Hebbel am Ufer. Underway since 1999 as a freelance journalist, editor and dance critic for radio stations as well as print media, including specialist journals, she mainly reports live, or produces and presents features, on political and cultural issues, not least cultural policy, with a focus inter alia on dance and performance festivals worldwide (but particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East), while working also as a dance dramaturg.

Die dreiwöchige Recherchephase dieser zweiten Ausgabe von “Unacknowledged Loss” wurde pandemiekonform gestaltet – auf Gruppenerlebnisse mussten die Künstler:innen also verzichten. Dennoch gab es Momente des Austauschs: gegenseitig vorbereitete Picknicks, die Übergabe eines “Ponchos” (gestaltet von der Künstlerin Claudia Hill) von einer Person zur nächsten, das Errichten eines gemeinsamen Schreins, Spaziergänge auf einem Friedhof. Die Fotografin Dorothea Tuch hat außer den Ritualen auch diese Recherchen begleitet und die Porträts der Künstler:innen gemacht, die in diesem Buch zu sehen sind.

Die Eroberung der Handlungsfähigkeit

Die zweite Ausgabe von “Unacknowledged Loss” fand im Mai 2020 unter besonderen Voraussetzungen statt, zu Beginn der Corona-Pandemie und mitten im ersten Lockdown. Welche Auswirkungen hatte das auf das Projekt? Annemie Vanackere, Intendantin & Geschäftsführerin des HAU Hebbel am Ufer, und Kurator Ricardo Carmona im Gespräch über kollektive Verlusterfahrungen, neue Gemeinschaftsgefühle und was wir von Projekten dieser Art lernen können.

AV: Ende Oktober 2019 hatten wir die finanziellen Mittel zusammen und konnten entscheiden, die zweite Ausgabe von “Unacknowledged Loss” im Juni 2020 durchzuführen. Dafür wollten wir erneut Künstler:innen unterschiedlicher Sparten in einer Residenz zusammenbringen, um gemeinsam zu Trauer und Verlust zu recherchieren und zu arbeiten. Es sollte eine Gruppe von Menschen sein, die Lust haben, sich aufeinander einzulassen, und sich aus einem Gemeinschaftsgefühl heraus gegenseitig inspirieren und stärken. Dann kam die Corona-Pandemie und uns wurde schlagartig klar: Das wird so nicht gehen. Wir haben viele Gespräche mit der Kuratorin und Initiatorin von “Unacknowledged Loss” Barbara Raes geführt und sie war zunächst sehr skeptisch in Bezug auf die Durchführbarkeit des Projekts.

RC: Im April gab es noch einen Moment, da dachten wir, wir könnten das doch noch machen wie geplant, aber dann wurde schnell klar, dass das unmöglich sein würde.

Wir mussten uns etwas einfallen lassen, wenn wir das Projekt noch retten wollten.

AV: Das war auch für die beteiligten Künstler:innen wichtig, einige haben uns explizit gebeten, das Projekt nicht aufzugeben, natürlich auch aus existenziellen Gründen, aber nicht nur. Nach den zahlreichen Verschiebungen, Absagen, aber auch gelungenen Transformationen von Projekten in den digitalen Raum haben wir zusammen mit Barbara Raes festgestellt, dass wir gerade bei diesem Residenzprojekt neu denken sollten. Es geht um Trauer und Verlust und genau das war es ja, was wir gefühlt haben angesichts der Tatsache, dass wir uns jetzt eben nicht treffen, nicht zusammenkommen konnten. So wurde diese Leerstelle dann zum Herz des Projekts.

RC: Es war auch sehr wichtig für das Team des HAU, “Unacknowledged Loss II” trotz allem nicht aufzugeben. So konnten wir hier weitermachen, mussten nicht in den völligen Stillstand verfallen, und es konnte eine Energie aufrechterhalten bleiben, die die beteiligten Kolleg:innen ein Stück weit auch getragen hat. Endlich ein Projekt mit realen Menschen, mit einer positiven Grundausrichtung! Kein Happening, sondern die Möglichkeit, ganz konstruktiv etwas zu entwickeln, sich so auch wieder eine Handlungsfähigkeit zu erobern, die in der Hochphase der Corona-Pandemie manchmal völlig abhandengekommen zu sein schien. Diese Ausgabe wurde natürlich durch ein anderes Grundgefühl bestimmt als die erste. Das Teilen einer kollektiven Erfahrung hat gefehlt.

Paradoxerweise wurden die Rituale aber sogar intimer dadurch, dass die Künstler:innen sich so stark auf sich selbst konzentriert und in sich hineingehört haben. Das ist auch in den Videos deutlich spürbar.

AV: Wir haben mit Liz Rosenfeld eine Filmemacherin in das Projekt einbezogen, die die Rituale dokumentiert hat, das war eine Neuerung im Vergleich zur ersten Ausgabe. Liz hatte eine besondere Rolle, nämlich das Privileg, als Einzige alle Rituale persönlich

begleiten zu dürfen. Wir konnten teilhaben an dem, was sie erlebt hat. Ich habe mir am Veröffentlichungsabend am 6. Juli 2020 dann alle Filme hintereinander angeschaut und fand das sehr bewegend – auch aufgrund der Trauer darüber, dass wir nicht persönlich anwesend sein konnten, wie noch 2017 während der ersten Ausgabe. Da war das Fehlen der körperlichen Nähe, des Zusammenkommens, für mich akut spürbar.

RC: Die Künstler:innen sind sich ja vorher gar nicht begegnet. Sie sollten eigentlich nach und nach eine Gruppe bilden, aber der Austausch fand dann nur über ihre Stimmen statt oder über reisende Objekte und vielleicht am meisten über das Wissen, dass sie sich alle in der gleichen Situation befinden. Erst am Ende haben sie sich während eines Video-Meetings zum Abschluss des Projekts zum ersten Mal in der Gruppe gesehen. Es wurde dann auch Teil des Konzepts, diesen Verlust und die Trauer darüber zu integrieren.

AV: Die Intimität und Geschlossenheit hat angeschlossen an die “Silent Conversation” der ersten Ausgabe. Das wollte Barbara Raes ursprünglich gern wieder aufgreifen, ein starkes Format zum Auftakt des Projekts. Alle Künstler:innen sind sich erstmals in der Gruppe begegnet und statt sich mit Worten über ihre Biografien und Arbeiten vorzustellen und auszutauschen, haben sie nur still beieinander gesessen, sich angeschaut, beobachtet und still kommuniziert. Das war eine besondere Erfahrung, die diesmal so nicht wiederholt werden konnte, weil das online nicht funktionieren würde.

RC: Die soziale Unterstützung während der Residenz, das für einander Dasein, die anderen auffangen, der Austausch über grundlegende Fragestellungen – all das ist einfach weggefallen. Das hat aber auch verdeutlicht, wie wichtig es für uns Menschen ist, uns direkt miteinander auszutauschen. Und trotzdem hatte “Unacknowledged Loss II” für alle Beteiligten gerade unter diesen besonderen Umständen eine große Bedeutung.

Ich glaube, wir brauchen diese Art von Projekten jetzt mehr denn je. Rituale können uns in krisenhaften Zeiten helfen und Kunst kann dabei eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

Die Verbindung von Kunst und Ritualen explizit herzustellen, bietet noch mal eine heilsame Perspektive auf unsere künstlerische Praxis.

AV: Wir lernen daraus auch, dass das Thema Verlust eben nicht individuell ist, sondern eine gesellschaftliche und politische Ebene hat. Barbara Raes’ Punkt ist genau das: Es gibt wenig Raum für Trauer und Verlust in unseren kapitalistischen Gesellschaften, das wird einfach weggedrängt, weil es nicht produktiv ist. Dann stellen wir plötzlich schmerzhaft fest, dass “es nicht mehr geht”, dass diese Verdrängung uns nicht guttut.

Und dass neue Kräfte und Räume entfaltet werden können, die uns wieder lebendig machen, wenn die Verletzungen und Verluste, die wir erlebt haben, ausgesprochen werden.

RC: Es gab sehr persönliche Rituale, zum Beispiel das von Mmakgosi Kgabi, und dann sozio-politisch angelegte, wie das von Enis Turan.

AV: Ja, oder das von Olympia Bukkakis, die über die Verluste der Zukunft geforscht hat.

Das hat mich inspiriert, weil darüber zu reflektieren so wichtig ist für eine gesellschaftliche Entwicklung: Manchmal muss man sich von Gelerntem verabschieden und es durch Neues ersetzen, um weiterzukommen. Und auf der institutionellen Ebene zeigt uns die Erfahrung mit “Unacknowledged Loss”, dass es wichtig bleibt, Zeit und Raum zu schaffen, damit Künstler:innen sich derart vertiefen können und nicht in erster Linie ergebnisorientiert arbeiten, sondern forschen und sich entwickeln können.

RC: Dieses Feedback bekommen wir auch von den Künstler:innen. Der Einfluss, den das Projekt auf sie hatte, war jetzt sogar teilweise intensiver. Noch Monate später kamen Künstler:innen auf uns zu, um uns zu sagen, wie viel diese Arbeit in ihnen bewegt hat.

Bei manchen hat sich die Wirkung erst mit einem zeitlichen Abstand zum Projekt entfaltet – sicher auch eine Folge des fehlenden Austauschs mit den anderen Künstler:innen.

AV: Was wir alle jetzt notgedrungen lernen, ist das Bilden neuer Gemeinschaften. Wie können wir uns nahe sein, auch angesichts des Verlustes, den die gerade erforderliche körperliche Distanz bedeutet? Und was ist eben nicht ersetzbar?

RC: Ja, die Gruppendynamik hat diesmal gefehlt, da ist eine ganze Ebene verloren gegangen. Auch die Interaktion mit dem “Live”-Publikum. Das war unser Verlust. Das wünschen wir uns für die nächste Ausgabe sehr zurück!

Liz Rosenfeld and An*dre Neely reflect upon the project “Unacknowledged Loss II” and the topics it addresses.

In June 2020, as post-lockdown Berlin was starting to discover the potential of a newly restricted social landscape, I had the opportunity to engage in an experience with nine artists: Ania Nowak, Colin Self, Dragana Bulut, Enis Turan, Falk Rößler, Joana Tischkau, Mmakgosi Kgabi, Nuray Demir and Olympia Bukkakis, who were participating in the “Unacknowledged Loss” residency initiated by Barbara Raes / Beyond the Spoken and hosted by HAU Hebbel am Ufer. As the theatres were closed to audiences, I was invited to create a five-minute experimental video of each artist, a portrait with the intention of glimpsing into their process. During this month-long residency, I met the artists and got to know their practice and how they were relating to this experience of being socially isolated for several months, and together, we discussed what we considered to be the unacknowledged losses in our lives.

In Berlin, during the lockdown period, we were lucky enough to be allowed to go out on walks with one other person. I went for a walk every week with Andre, our conversations unfolding like an exquisite corpse, always picking up where we left off. We met in the Platz between our homes. Andre brought me homemade peanut butter. I brought them hash cookies. We would talk about relationships to loss, to an unknown, and to our intergenerational experience. We would talk about age, love and how we recognise queer kin. How we are kin. How there is too much language and yet not enough. How queer histories will continue to resonate during a period where it seems unavoidable to mourn a future we are not supposed to know.

Here, we share some impressions. Discursive. Experimental. Emotional. Incomplete and always in motion. Inspired by the artists I had the privilege to spend time with in June. Inspired by their work and their beautiful urgent insights. Inspired by questions that state the obvious. Inspired by the potential between people who take the time to make each other feel seen. Inspired by our walks. Our coping mechanisms.

Inspired by our care. How to intervene in the automatic turn to notions of death when processing notions of loss.

Cutting our Loss(es) A slight brush against a stranger’s arm. The moment one pulls out of a hole. The hollow impression of a hole that is left full. An active mourning that has not yet manifested. The dominant decides the submissive has had enough. The submissive consents. T-shirt weather in the middle of December. Longing as an entity occupying the space between bodies. When the story stops. Feeling seen. Performing constantly. When the term “greenhouse effect” was first used in 1901. When an animal comes out of another animal. When the plenum disperses. When community is only

about feeling important and not actually about community. When familiar love becomes a stranger. When a moment of rocking turns into a moment of shaking. In 1896, the first quantitative prediction of global warming due to a hypothetical doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide was made. Cleaning your house. Playing the piano in front of the sunset. Boundaries opening up portals rather than closing down potential. A constant shifting state of an unknown. Rooted simultaneously in the individual and the collective. Opaque histories. Bodies. Politics and desires that continue to be under attack, deeply exhausted from explaining, at war, fucked, loved, invisible, privately adored, shamefully desired, overworked from ticking boxes and tirelessly resisting. When unconditional love means showing up. The vibrator as a tool to cure female hysteria. Sharing a meal with no end and no beginning. When reparations are systemically racist and assist as a political crutch to help countries refuse their deep colonialist histories. Only you can know your own broken heart.

Saying what you feel. Riding your bike across the city. The wind on the back of your hand as you are being driven into dusk. A sharp axe in the hand of a passionate artist. Hacking your own narrative. The effort it takes to stay effortlessly still. Everything that is ambiguous and atonal. Collapsing. When you are doing well at work.

An empty darkroom with all the lights on. When the heat of summer suddenly transitions into the coolness of autumn. When experiencing cold feels like the first time.

A hiss inward. Sinking teeth and nails and bones into longing. Chasms and craters and folds and deserts. When vowels and nouns and adjectives become abstract.

When panting turns into silence. When the air is unusually quiet and shy. The language and memories of worlds some claim never have been realised or thought about before right now. The realities of people who have always lived in these worlds. The majority that can’t bear the transparency. A majority who never had to consider edging a state of apocalypse. Industrialisation. The invention of the dildo.

A new tattoo. When the things we have been discussing hypothetically are right in front of us. When relevance is irrelevant. When one stops referring to a “we” and an “us”.

Mourning a Future I’ve had my palm read two times, about ten years apart. Each time, the reader told me different things, and I realised it is because the lines in our hands change with age. They shift with experience. The lines redirect and get older, more used, more known. They slowly burn into our palms like perfect embers that will only go out when you put them out yourself.

“The beginning of a new era”, “a threshold humanity must cross”, a loss, a hole, an apocalypse.

This year is marked by the big change-energy of the edging of a Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto threesome. Despite the neoliberal attempts to trivialise and individuate astrological information through sun-sign-based life-predictions, love-compatibilities and smartphone horoscope apps, astrology positions us within a collective organism, drawing a map of losses, of energies, potentials and existing tensions, exposing strategies favourable to turning desired fictions into realities.

The year 2020 has been long talked and written about among astrologers as a warning about the personal, political and societal foundations that the planets would come to shake up, shifts that will continue to unfold over the next thirty years. Most planets this year have been transiting through Capricorn, often known as the Patriarch, who rules systems of governance and of economy that demand structure, like its ruling planet Saturn. On January 12th this year, a day after the first registered Covid-19-related death in China, as the world awoke to hear about an outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, Saturn and Pluto were conjunct in Capricorn. This hadn’t happened since 1518, the year the Portuguese authorised the first direct slave trade from Africa to the Americas. Saturn-Pluto conjunctions happen roughly every thirty years in a different sign, and they underline moments of incredible significance: the start of World War I and World War II, the cultural revolution of the 60s (when they joined in Libra, the sign of relationships), or the previous instance in the 80s during the economic recession.

This year’s astrology unlocks energies that have not inhabited the skies in centuries, that excavate, expose and attempt to dismantle the deep roots of an unfair system of rules, social divisions and justice. If the Pluto in Scorpio generation has come to highlight and destabilise deep-rooted views of hetero-patriarchal sexuality and binary gender-coding; if the Pluto in the Sagittarius era has come to explode the travel industry and ways to communicate, connect and learn internationally; then, Pluto in Capricorn (until 2024) comes directly against the stiff, dated, violent systems of governance themselves. Pluto, in Capricorn, has spent the year in conjunction with Jupiter (the last peak coming in November 12th). In the past, this conjunction was active during the Plague of Athens around 400 BC, the Black Death in the 14th century, the Russian Plague of 1771 and the 1918 flu pandemic; it was also peaking in Libra during the HIV outbreak in 1981.

Olympia said, “I think I am mourning a future”. Enis was concerned with the temporality of grieving. Joana posed questions around disconnection to death. Colin and I sat in Görlitzer Park discussing caretaking and political burnout. Mmakgosi invited me in for tea and we engaged about maintaining the balance between showing up for yourself and the people in your life. Nuray and I agreed that the loss of language continues to be woven through the fabric of our lives. Ania reflected on the notion of granting oneself permission in order to experience loss. “How can we make lost

histories visible? What is a historical loss?” Falk asked. Dragana left me thinking about the privilege and luxury of time and space to consider what unacknowledged losses are, and in the most beautiful way, how grief is simply not a remarkable experience.

Grief is what is felt in the immediate moment of loss. A reaction to loss. Mourning is what comes after grief. A state of mourning could last seconds or decades. It could last lifetimes. Mourning is often referred to as a collective experience, whereas grief is articulated as an individual state.

Loss could be like a prescribed burn. An intentional fire set to regenerate a forest.

Ash to nourish future growth. Indentation as foundation. A pillar. A new seed. A rebuilding of community. Future fires. A transparent layer facilitating an acknowledgment of what is not yet lost, what can still be seen, and feel seen. Controlled burning can stimulate germination and reveal the minerals in layers of soil. Some pinecones only open up and spread seeds when exposed to fire. Artists don’t just ignite prescribed burns; artists are controlled fires. Artists navigate an ambiguous state of hyper-relevancy and irrelevancy. Extreme visibility and invisibility. Artists labour under an unacknowledged system of class created by a system of hierarchies. The audience. The technicians. The administration. The office. The curator. The programmer. The assistant director. The director. The board of trustees. The donors. When the museum must become a hospice, and the artist serves as a doula, who will take care of whom? Who will clear the empty stage? How will the walls get painted? Who will prepare the house? And why are these questions only futures presented in the form of questions, rather than prompts towards a slow, sustainable, prescribed burn?

Planets are beyond human, beyond linear predictions. The fall toward technodystopia is as close as the one toward humanitarian revolution. The next three months are horny for strengthening collective structures and actions, a shedding of past individual dreams and ambitions as irrelevant, a profound use of the transformative energies the skies are bringing, to conjure into plausible reality the political fictions hypothetically dreamed of for decades. As cycles shift in the skies, terrestrial cycles must also shift from a managerial annihilation of bodies toward another kind of somatic fiction; before the same fictions triumph again and imprint their destruction into this new cycle of lived reality, before the dream of a metamorphic revolution becomes simply formless, failing, again, to fully take shape.

Astrology as a guide, a tool, a soothsayer, but not an answer. Wondering when to choose the right moment. When we act too slowly. When we intervene too quickly.

The haste to fix. The urgency to fight. The need to be heard. To write. The pressure to make. To be seen. To be heard. To be useful. When usefulness becomes problematic. When caring unintentionally becomes a rock in the wheel. When loving is so painful, it stops motion. How to responsibly take up space. Edging the burn out. Not wasting time. The appropriate time to call. But then, missing that appropriate time because you waited too long. Too long to express your love. Too long to exercise your outrage. Too long to measure safety and risk. Will there ever be a right moment?

KADDISH / FADO MENOR Dreaming back thru life, Your time – and mine accelerating toward Apocalypse, the final moment – the flower burning in the Day – and what comes after “Kaddish” by Allen Ginsberg

Apocalypse is one of the main concepts our language has destroyed. Apocalypse as a shift, a major change, a chapter turned over; apocalypse not innately as destruction, as ending, as finale.

“I think every generation feels they are on the brink of some kind of apocalypse”, my father said to me. But what I think he never expected to experience in his lifetime was his own loss of faith in democracy. No doubt, this is a highly privileged position to have for three quarters of one’s life. However, for my dad, a now retired lawyer who balanced his professional life between polar opposites – such as anti-deathpenalty politics, prison reform and running a legal organisation for the underserved in New York City while also representing oil companies (for example) – the idea that democracy could be a mirage is a kind of apocalypse.

Typically, I speak to my father and stepmother once a month. A simple check-in, which almost always leads to me stoking the fire regarding politics, queer stuff or whatever it is I am reading that moment. Like me, my Dad can’t walk away from a good argument. As I said to a previous partner the first time I introduced him to my family, “Don’t be alarmed. We are Jews. It sounds like we are screaming, but we are just talking”.

After thirteen years of living in Berlin, I finally felt the epigenetic roots of my German-Jewish history creep in. I emphasise finally here, because I always wondered when this would happen. I spent a good part of the last decade arguing with my

father about my decision to move to Berlin. “You can’t be serious about making a life for yourself in Germany”, my Dad often said. During the early lockdown period, I lay in my bedroom and stared at the painting of my Great Oma, Fanny. The portrait of her that hangs over my bed was one of the only objects sewn into the lining of the vehicle that my family used to flee Berlin, and my Oma, who made me sit in front of this portrait of her mother at Shabbat dinner every Friday night, left it to me when she died. Apparently, I look exactly like her, and as I spent many afternoons gazing into the eyes of my Great Grandmother, for the first time in my life I wondered if she found the unknown as unbearable as I did. For Fanny, I can only imagine, the unknown manifested in questions regarding where the family would end up, if they would make it out of Germany safely, and eventually, whether they would find a way to be together again. For me, the unknown has become an open-ended portal. A portal in the form of a car wash, relentlessly sprayed and scrubbed with my family’s past, present and future. Ancestral feelings coupled with a notion of privilege, however false this notion may be, that I feel safer in the country that exterminated my ancestors, a country my father tried to stop me from moving to, while my parents, my sister and my friends back in my home country of the United States continue to face an unprecedented political unknown.

To compare my Oma’s history to mine right now is of course impossible. Comparing histories is a dangerous game. I’m obviously in a more secure place than she was in 1933. I am not on the run. I can openly be Jewish. Be a queer. Be a genderless body to the community I stand with. And unlike so many in the global reality of this moment, upon first sight, for now, I can still pass. I am White. I can be read as cisgendered female. And I know that I can use these positions to gain access if I want to. Many European friends have asked me how the United States could be exploding into riots during such an intense pandemic: “Aren’t people under strict lockdown?” they asked. I explained there is no choice. They die one way or the other, so they die fighting.

I came to Berlin to give myself a second mourning after the death of my mother. To mourn in the city that her mother left and spent her life mourning over, but would never talk about. It was the only way I could feel close to her after she died. And it was the only way I could be in control of my own mourning. I often say that I came to Berlin in search of a Jewish diaspora I never had, but rather found a queer diaspora. But now I ask myself how my queer diaspora and my Jewish diaspora are of the same, and how can this be useful?

In “Kaddish”, Allen Ginsberg writes a mourning ritual about his mother Naomi in the form of a poem. Inspired by the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer recited while in a state

of mourning, Ginsberg makes sense of his relationship with his mother, a Holocaust survivor, as well as his queerness and her decline towards death. My mother was also named Naomi. Over the lockdown period, I began to write my own Kaddish, a ritual for myself, my mother, and the queerness she refused to acknowledge in me: Strange now to think of you, fourteen years gone, fourteen years later, gone without your version of corsets and eyes. Girdles and Mitsouko.

Once a day, while I walk on the cool March pavements of Berlin, I make daily voice recordings of love letters between famous artists to send to my friends, embarrassed by my broken heart, incensed by an impending unknown.

I’ve been up all night discussing this foreign feeling tethered to concepts of ‘home country’.

I have only gone back to blood-family ties. To the ones who are left.

Your husband. My Father. A lawyer who wanted to be a rabbi. He refuses to say “Next year in Jerusalem” at the end of every Seder, as though a collective hope by a family of Jews will end decades of violence.

Your Daughter. My Sister. She gardens each day with soul and grace. She waits for doctors. She waits for answers.

I felt relief when you died. Loss echoes as I recall your laugh, and singes the ends of my ego. My broken German with an accent of Yiddish. Naomi, speaking your mother tongue, like a song. German was a language of violence. A book of secrets you locked away from your children. A lexicon of symbols and codes that you only spoke with your parents, the only Germans I knew for half my life.

My mother always refers to the moment I left home at fifteen as the moment she lost me. When I was a child, my mother visited an astrologer and tarot reader and was told she had to accept that I needed to be far away in order to go into the depths of myself, that there were things she wouldn’t be able to teach me, that I would find them through other kin I’d make across life. She speaks of that as knowing my loss, and speaks of my loss with joy and with pride and a tinge of melancholy.

The same mix of emotions that characterises fado (meaning “destiny” or “faith” in Latin), known as a Portuguese traditional music genre, but whose roots are thought to come from Indigenous populations in Brazil and West Africa – rhythms, melodies and chants practiced by Muslim communities now stolen and erased from history through Christian-colonial invasion.

Over the past nine or so years, since disclosing my queerness (or, if I have to call it that, “coming out”), conversations with my Dad have fractured the threshold of

male-socialised familiarity into a vulnerability we hadn’t shared before. He called me a few months after I had moved to London to apologise for his silence and prolonged processing, telling me he had been angry, he struggled to understand why – after all he worked to give me and my brother more chances, after us having been born much lighter than he was, almost passing – I had to choose hardship for myself.

I cannot begin to imagine the loss, and the apocalypses, that someone born in 1959 Mozambique, under Portuguese dictatorship as colonial rule, has experienced. Someone who between five and fifteen years of age lived in a military dispute over land, the same land he was taught as nation, same nation he was presented as his. Someone who was forced to renounce their nationality and assets to escape conflict and decimation, someone who upon arriving in Europe has had his dream shattered by sedimented impressions of race that reboot the same apocalyptical cycle our systems have been nurturing for centuries, the same he tried to escape from. Seeing Portugal descend, from afar and over the past eight years, into mass-touristification and rampant neo-fascism under the international disguise of a “socialist” government, I can only begin to imagine from afar, fifty years later, the floods in Mozambique destroying the homes of our family there, hear of the jihadi invasions close to his hometown, all whilst the pandemic kept spreading.

It feels impossible to begin to understand my dad’s and my history of displacement and migration as part of the same timeline of events, events that surpass both our human existences. Impossible to derive from the privilege that having been born in Europe, even if Southern, lays on my every move. At the same time, in different shades and different eras of the same linear temporality, we’re two Brown bodies navigating a system that violently enforces itself as White. I moved away from Portugal in 2012, when the financial crisis peaked and Northern Europe managed to avoid a big part of its recession by tearing down the Southern and Mediterranean economies of its Union, I had “no future”. Dad and I are two genealogically connected bodies who saw a future at loss, and in loss. We have a whole different framework for our existence, our own sets of privileges and oppressions, but we have much in common. We both moved based on false promises, we both worked seventy hours a week or more under illegal contracts, we both were harassed and attacked in the street, we both resorted to sex work at times, we both went days with no food, we both deal with the undermining of our abilities and responsibility and skills, and we both exist in code-switching and retracted anger, forever chasing a failed sense of safety.

I speak to my parents nearly every week, sometimes twice in a week.We have a very close, open and honest relationship. I was born into a long line of police officers: both parents, two grandparents, uncles, aunts and some cousins. I, however,

see the police as the states way of weaponising people’s need for a stable income, pitting poor people against each other to distract from the real underpinnings of violence.

When I spoke with my mother over the past few months, as I made peanut butter and my mother tried to pass the time in isolation for twenty-something days battling Coronavirus, we spoke about the Black Lives Matter movement, about abolition, about defunding the police and the restructuring of security and policing budgets, both military and civil forces, nationally and EU-wide. We spoke of the rapid rise of fascist populism, united under political parties heavily supported by these state authorities. As protests have unfolded and racist voices grow stronger and stronger in the force and the country at large, I watched my mother’s core foundation get crushed, the image of her work fractured as she slid into a major depression over her thirty-six years of naive complacency. I don’t think my White mother deserves pity.

Her awakening is nothing short of late. But what I know is that my mother should’ve been a social worker, a trauma counsellor, a caretaker; the fact she had to put on a blue uniform to somewhat do that work is profound economic mismanagement.

Fado menor is the subgenre of fado reserved for songs about longing, mourning, death, solitude and resignation. It’s the only fado I ever really enjoyed, that I would go to see live in small bars across Lisbon when I felt the waves of grief, that I sometimes listen to now when I lie in the melancholy of complicated family histories, of acquired losses, of privileged geographies and the inescapable hole of distance.

They tell me they’re happy I’m in Berlin, that I’d probably get much better care here were I to become sick, should my asthma or my bronchitis make me one of the more severe cases. It’s a bittersweet safety, when hospitals back home cannot afford to function properly due to cuts brought up ten years ago to pay a debt, and interest rates, in large part to restore the German economy.

In 2017, when I gathered 40 members of my queer community and brought them over for a collective wedding ceremony in my parent’s home in rural Portugal, my mother sobbed that she got to know another family of mine and thanked them for filling up the holes in me that her own experience didn’t stretch enough to cover. Is the act of living just an accumulation of experiences and sensations toward filling all the holes we’re born into, or born with? The feeling of loss as a reminder that some holes aren’t meant to be filled, or that all holes have always been full, but full of a complicated matter we don’t recognise as whole?

No End. No Middle. No Beginning.

The excitement of not knowing where somebody is gonna touch you next. The anxiety of not knowing when somebody is gonna touch you next – if somebody is gonna touch you next. The post-coital exhale, a cumshot in vapor form. In 1944, Harvard Mark I, the first success in automated computation research, is built with investment from the U.S military force. Breathy whispering in someone’s ears. Knowing desire before knowing displacement. Biting. Natural landscapes pre-Windows XP default wallpaper. Body hair interlaced between skins that aren’t in contact. Hook-ups who never sent a location pin. Not being fictionalised. Not existing in reality. Two rings of anal muscle squeezing spit out of my tongue. Being washed-out, wiped-out, whited-out. Thirty-three degrees and not needing to book for the pool. It’s 2020 and White people do reading lists against racism as a form of activism. Shared nail-polish. Consent as a shifting practice of interpersonal care and not as a stiff, threatening, state mandate. Dipping my licked spoon in my friend’s ramen broth. Having my butt-cheeks spread open by hands that aren’t mine. Knowing pleasure before knowing worry. Being a tombstone made of flesh and bones and fat and cum but managing. Wanting to fuck and actually fucking. When parks had more grass and trees than broken bottles and condom wrappers. When the reliable cruising spots still existed. Not mourning a whole ecosystem. Not knowing one’s history. The indentations in memory accelerating doubts over whether you have ever been touched at all. Drifting into loving. Can a human tongue stretch long enough to reach the inner ring of a sphincter? Reaching it anyway. Protests that feel like protesting. Sending letters in envelopes closed with saliva. Knowing orgasm before knowing doom. Seeing my grandma not over Zoom. In 1989, the World Wide Web was invented. Seeing a star shine before it goes extinct. Eating tomatoes that grew on an apartment balcony. Lying in loneliness as something extraordinary. Smiling to the cashier in the supermarket. Learning to smile with my eyes. The disquiet of many voices speaking at the same time but not knowing what they’re saying. The fact that language became even more essential and inescapable. The depressing reliance of “The

world’s biggest bookshop”. Being dominated before being desolated. Not knowing what to do with oneself and others, what to do with oneself amongst others. Fugitivity from cyclicality. Renewed language for the same hatred. Wanting to be patient with good intentions. Cleaning your hands in your sheets like a teenager after jerking off. The same narrative for a different time of the same political intentions. Doing your laundry. Hoping is not a good tactic. Saying “we need to stick together”. Hypocritical desire lies at the root of queerness. A feeling. Not an idea. Not a philosophy.

Not a theory. It is not concrete, or easily defined. There is not a clear definition or obvious conclusion. And like emotional time and space, it is not quantifiable.

Liebe:r (Künstler:in), ich freue mich schon sehr darauf, diese Woche dein Ritual zu filmen und ein wunderbares experimentelles Porträt unserer gemeinsamen Zeit zu gestalten.

Hier und jetzt möchte ich dir gern meinen letzten Teil dieser Residency schildern.

Am 29. Juni werde ich mein eigenes “Abschluss”-Ritual filmen, mit dem ich dich ehren und dir einen Raum geben will. Ich bitte dich, vor oder nach deinem eigenen Ritual – wie es dir lieber ist – ein Symbol/Siegel/kleines Bild in der Größe eines 2-Euro-Stückes zu gestalten, das ich mir am Montag tätowieren lassen werde.

Dein Entwurf kann ganz einfach und klar sein, eine Zahl, ein Buchstabe, ein Wort oder etwas Abstraktes. Was auch immer du willst.

Mein Körper, so denke ich, trägt unzählige Menschen in sich. Er ist ein Archiv der Erfahrungen, Gefühle, Augenblicke. Ein Archiv der Verluste und Erinnerungen, der Liebe und des Verlangens. Nach der wunderbaren Erfahrung, mit dir den vergangenen Monat geteilt zu haben, möchte ich mit meinem Ritual die Zeit der “Unacklowledged Loss”-Residency bewahren.

Du sollst dir auf gar keinen Fall wegen des Symbols den Kopf zerbrechen. Stell es dir als ein Zeichen vor, das ich für dich tragen werde und das für diese Zeit steht.

Ich möchte nicht mit dir über das Tattoo diskutieren.

Du sollst es mir einfach nur zuschicken. Die gemeinsame Zeit mit dir war eine großartige Erfahrung, und ich freue mich außerordentlich darauf, in den kommenden Wochen dein filmisches Porträt zu gestalten. x Liz

Ein Ritual (in Drag), das mit Spiegelungen, willkürlichen Einschränkungen, Intimität und eingestandenermaßen fiktionalen Realitäten unsere melancholische Anhänglichkeit an unmögliche Zukünfte lockert und unsere Sehnsüchte auf das vor uns Liegende umlenkt.

A ritual (in drag) using mirroring, arbitrary restriction, intimacy, and acknowledged fictional realities to loosen our melancholic attachments to impossible futures and provoke a redirection of our desires to that which still lies before us.

Dragana Bulut “The Ritual for Silenced Grief” Das Video von Liz Rosenfeld ist die Spur eines Abschnitts aus “The Ritual for Silenced Grief”, das ich im Rahmen von Barbara Raes’ Projekt “Unacknowledged Loss” entwickelt habe. Dieses Ritual gibt mir die Gelegenheit, über mein eigenes Verhältnis zur Trauer, aber auch über deren gesellschaftlich unterschiedliches Wesen nachzudenken. Nicht trauern, überleben und organisieren!, so lautete das Motto in dem kriegsgebeutelten Arbeitermilieu, in dem ich aufgewachsen bin. Trauer war ein Luxus, den man sich nicht leisten konnte. Was für Alltagsrituale habe ich mir geschaffen in einer Kultur, in der Trauer verdrängt werden musste? Was für Bewältigungsmechanismen nutzen die weniger Privilegierten?

Mein Ritual wurde für mich zu einem Ort, an dem ich das Schweigen hinter mir lassen konnte. Während ich putze, erzähle ich Geschichten: ein personalisiertes Ritual, das ich entwickelt habe, um meine Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart zu verbinden, in der ich den Verlust betrauere, im Theater mit anderen zusammenzukommen und das kollektive Wesen eines Rituals zu erfahren.

This video made by Liz Rosenfeld is a trace of one part of “The Ritual for Silenced Grief” that I developed during the project “Unacknowledged Loss” by Barbara Raes. “The Ritual for Silenced Grief” became an opportunity to reflect on my own relation to grief as well as its socially variable nature. “Don’t mourn; just organise and survive!” was the motto in the war-torn, working-class environment I grew up in, where grief was a luxury one could not afford. What were the everyday rituals I created to cope with loss in a culture forced to silence grief? What are the coping mechanisms of the less privileged?

This ritual became a space to say goodbye to silence by sharing stories while cleaning: a personalised ritual that I developed to connect my past to the present in which I mourn the loss of being able to gather in the theatre and experience the collective spirit of the ritual itself.

Nuray Demir “Kollektive Melancholie”

“hüzün” setzt sich der Positivierung aller Lebensbereiche entgegen. “hüzün” bezeichnet nicht die Melancholie eines Individuums, sondern die Kollektive Melancholie. Die meyhane (traditionelles türkisches Restaurant) war für viele Jahrhunderte der primäre Ort der Zerstreuung und die Kollektive Melancholie ein gern gesehener Gast. Nuray Demir lädt neun Personen auf eine meyhaneInsel im HAU3 ein. Melancholische Musik füllt den Raum, es fließt reichlich Rakı und für Mezze-Genuss ist gesorgt. Ein schmerzlicher Abend voller Schönheit. “hüzun” works against the instilment of positive thinking in all areas of life. “hüzun” does not refer to the melancholy of an individual, but instead to collective melancholy. For many centuries, the meyhanes (traditional Turkish restaurants) served as the primary location for pastimes and collective melancholy was a welcome guest.

Nuray Demir invites nine people to visit a meyhane island in HAU3. Melancholy music will fill the room, rakı will flow like water and an ample amount of meze to enjoy will be assured. A painful evening full of beauty.

Darf ich ehrlich sein? Ich habe Angst. Doch egal, so funktioniert die Trauer, und ich werde mir nicht länger gestatten, zu schlafen. Zwischen einst und jetzt zu schwanken. Mich tot zu stellen. Viel zu lange habe ich geglaubt, nur mir wäre das passiert, nur ich hätte jemals einen Verlust erlitten und mich schlecht benommen. Ich lade Sie ein zur Erweckung meines Raumes des Schlafes zu einem Raum des Lebens, einem Living Room. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Sie mit mir meine Trauer und meine Freude teilen, um Kaputtgegangenes – meines wie Ihres – in dem Transformationsritual einer Totenwache wiederherzustellen. Lassen Sie uns gemeinsam im Austausch von Geschichten, Musik und Fürsorge dem Leben seine Grausamkeit austreiben.

Can I be honest? I am scared. Be that as it may, this is how grief operates, and I will not allow myself to be asleep anymore. To float in between then and now. To play dead. For the longest time I thought I was the only one it had ever happened to, the only one to have ever lost and behaved badly. Ania Nowak “DOM”

Das Ritual besteht aus einem Spaziergang, einem Akt der Zerstörung und einer Arie. Mich begleiten werden drei Heiler:innen, die ich für diese Gelegenheit ausgesucht habe. Wir werden vom Botanischen Volkspark Blankenfelde-Pankow im Berliner Norden südwärts zum HAU3 in Kreuzberg gehen und dabei jeweils einen Holzscheit tragen. Kurz vor Sonnenaufgang werde ich meinen Scheit sowie einige alte Möbelstücke des HAU mit einer Axt kaputt schlagen.

Anschließend werde ich in einer Endlosschleife “Addio!” aus “La Traviata” lauschen. “Dom” bedeutet auf Polnisch “Zuhause” und steht auf Deutsch für eine Kathedrale, auf Englisch für den dominanten Part einer Beziehung. Ich gehe, zerstöre und lausche, um Wurzeln zu schlagen und den Schmerz der Vertreibung zu vergessen. Es ist eine Disziplinierungsmaßnahme, um eine Heimat ertragen zu lernen. Gegen Angst und Heimatlosigkeit.

This ritual consists of a walk, an act of destruction and a song. I am accompanied by three healers I chose for the occasion. We walk from the Botanical Garden Blankenfelde-Pankow in the north of Berlin southwards to HAU3 in Kreuzberg, each of us carrying a slice of wood. I destroy mine with an axe along with old furniture belonging to HAU theatre, just before sunset. Then I listen to Addio! from “La Traviata” sung to me over and over again. “Dom” means “home”, in Polish, “cathedral”, in German, and “a person who exercises dominance”, in English. I walk, destroy and listen to build roots and let go of the pain of eviction. It is a discipline for sustaining a home. Against fear and homelessness.

Enis Turan “Extinct”

Während im Jahr 2019 auf der Erde 750 Milliarden Tonnen Eis schmolzen, 13 Millionen Hektar Land von Buschbränden vernichtet wurden, 400 Millionen Hektar Land erodierten und 28 Millionen Hektar Wald abgeholzt wurden, … … werden auf der Bühne in drei Stunden 75 Eiswürfel schmelzen und 130 Kerzen niederbrennen. Ein Elfbillionstel des erodierten Erdbodens wird zur Pflanzerde für einen Baum aus 280 Holzstäben. Ein Abschiedsritual für all die Rohstoffe und all unsere Mitwesen, die im vergangenen Jahr dem menschlichen Handeln zum Opfer gefallen sind.

Whilst on Earth, in 2019, 750 billion tons of ice melted, 13 million hectares of land burned in bushfires, 400 million hectares of land degraded and 28 million hectares of forest got cut down ... ... On stage within 3 hours, 75 ice cubes melt away, 130 candles burn down. 1:11 trillion hectares of degraded earth becomes the new soil for a tree that is built from 280 wooden sticks. A farewell ritual for all the resources and our cohabitants we lost on earth within the past year, due to human activity.

Biografien

Als Königin des Himmels und der Erde, Kaiserin der Verzweiflung und Architektin Eures ewigen Leidens begann Olympia Bukkakis während ihres Bachelorstudiums der Sozialtheorie an der Universität Melbourne, Australien, mit Performances und belebte mit ihrer Partyreihe Pandora’s Box die örtliche alternative Dragszene. Ihre Zusammenarbeit mit der queeren australischen Theatergruppe Sisters Grimm führte zu Projekten wie “Summertime in the Garden of Eden”. Seit ihrem Umzug nach Berlin 2012 hat sie verschiedene queere Performanceabende wie “Get Fucked”, “Fancy” und “Apocalypse Tonight” organisiert, kuratiert und moderiert und rief 2015 Queens Against Borders ins Leben, eine Solidaritäts-Performancereihe für Trans- und Queergeflüchtete. Seit einigen Jahren tritt sie außerdem in Stücken der zeitgenössischen Tanz- und Performanceszene auf, darunter “Between Sirens” und “Human Resources” von Jeremy Wade. Im Jahr 2019 schloss sie mit der Inszenierung “Tales From a State of Shemergency” den Masterstudiengang Solo/ Dance/Authorship am Hochschulübergreifenden Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT) ab. Gemeinsam mit Isabel Gatzke verfasste sie das performative Manifest “Work on Progress”, das im Rahmen des Festivals “The Future is Not Enough” im HAU Hebbel am Ufer präsentiert wurde. Neben ihrer Performance- und Moderationstätigkeit gibt Olympia auch Workshops und schreibt. Ihr Text “Gender Euphoria: Trans and Nonbinary Identites in Drag” erschien in dem Sammelband “Contemporary Drag Practices and

Performers: Drag in a Changing Scene” bei Bloomsbury. Zudem veröffentlichte das HKW im vergangenen Jahr ihre Polemik “A Case for the Abolition of Men”. Mit ihrer Arbeit bewegt sie sich im Spannungsfeld und an den Schnittpunkten von queerem Nachtleben und zeitgenössischer Tanz- und Performanceszene, die ihr Schaffen prägen.

Dragana Buluts Arbeit umfasst Choreografie und Performance. In ihrem choreografischen Schaffen begreift sie das Theater als Ort der sozialen Zusammenkunft und hinterfragt die unterschiedlichen Strukturen von Ästhetik, Ökonomie und Gefühlen und deren wechselseitige Verbindungen. Indem sie sich etablierte Formate aneignet, erschafft sie Performances, denen die Spannung zwischen dem Immateriellen und dem Materiellen, dem Dinglichen und dem Affekt zugrunde liegt, und erkundet den Raum zwischen Realität und Fiktion. Diese sozialen Choreografien machen die verschiedenen, oftmals übersehenen Prozesse der gesellschaftlichen Choreografierung unseres Verhaltens sichtbar. Bulut machte an der UDK Berlin ihren Masterabschluss in Solo/Dance/Authorship und entwickelt seit 2005 eigene choreografische Arbeiten, die in verschiedenen Institutionen gezeigt wurden, darunter dem HAU Hebbel am Ufer, dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt, dem Tanzquartier Wien, dem PACT Zollverein Essen und dem Museum Folkwang Essen. Aktuell beschäftigt sie sich im Medium der sozialen Choreografie mit der Kommodifizierung von Emotionen.

Nuray Demir ist Künstlerin und Kuratorin im Bereich der visuellen, darstellenden und performativen Künste. Ihre Praxis ist von einem forschenden und radikal transdisziplinären Ansatz gekennzeichnet. Für ihre Projekte arbeitet sie kollaborativ mit Personen aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen, mit denen sie temporäre Ensembles bildet. Sie beschäftigt sich in ihren Arbeiten insbesondere mit Debatten und Begriffen der feministischen und postkolonialen Theorie. Nuray Demirs Arbeit ist dabei von einem kritischen Blick auf soziale Ausschlüsse und komplexe hierarchische Verhältnisse gekennzeichnet; mit ihrem Werk entwirft sie künstlerische Irritationen und Gegenpositionen und formuliert damit einen Vorstellungs- und Ermächtigungsraum für soziale Gleichstellung. Sie realisierte Projekte an diversen Institutionen, wie etwa dem HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin, dem HKW und den Wiener Festwochen. Seit 2019 ist sie im künstlerischen Leitungsteam von District * Schule ohne Zentrum.

Zudem trägt sie ihre Ansätze in die Lehre, etwa an der Universität der Künste Berlin und der Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin.

Mmakgosi Kgabi – (s)he/t(he)y alias Ouma ist Gründungsmitglied der Motherbox Organisation für Co-Operation in the Arts und die Grandmother Soul der multiplen Ausbildung. Im Wintersemester 2019 machte sie ihren Master in Solo/ Dance/Authorship am HZT der Berliner Universität der Künste (UDK) und der Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch (HfS) in Zusammenarbeit mit Tanz-

RaumBerlin, einem Netzwerk der professionellen Tanzszene. Ihr Forschungsvorhaben beschäftigte sich mit der Sprache als Choreografie/Tanz, wobei der Mund als Tänzer:in die Möglichkeit einer Annäherung an den “Tanz” eröffnet, während dieser sich seinerseits der “Sprache” annähert. Kgabis vielfältiges Schaffen umfasst die Arbeit als Autorin, Dramaturgin und Sprechkünstlerin, zudem hat sie ein ausgeprägtes Interesse am Schauspiel für die Kamera. Sie ist ausgebildete Schauspielerin, Performancecoach und Theater- und Improvisationsdarstellerin.

Ihre Ausbildung machte sie bei Causing a Scene (Johannesburg), Performance of a Lifetime (POAL-NYC) und Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA). Sie studierte an der Rhodes University Theater mit den Schwerpunkten Choreografie, Tanzrepertoire und Schauspiel sowie sechs Semester Wirtschaftswissenschaften und sammelte in Südafrika und anderen Ländern Erfahrungen als Filmund Bühnenschauspielerin. Außerdem hat sie ein besonderes Talent für die Organisation, Logistik und Durchführung von Projekten und Events und ist gegenwärtig im Produktionsbüro des HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin tätig.

Ania Nowak beschäftigt sich in ihrer erweiterten choreografischen Praxis mit Verletzlichkeit und Begehren als Ansätzen für eine Neuerfindung der Möglichkeiten von Körper und Sprache. Ihr Schaffen umfasst Formate wie Live- und Videoperformances, performative Ausstellungen und Texte. Ihr besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der politischen

Dimension des physischen Körpers und seiner immateriellen Aspekte – Affekte, Emotionen und Intuition –, um neue verkörperte Praktiken der Fürsorge und der Gemeinschaft zu ersinnen. Letzteres interessiert sie insbesondere in Hinblick auf die instabile transnationale Natur unseres Lebens und Arbeitens in der heutigen westlichen Welt, mit den Erfahrungen von Sexualität, Krankheit und Trauer, aber auch der Ethik des Genusses in einer Zeit drängender klimatischer und politischer Probleme. Nowaks Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Institutionen gezeigt, darunter das HAU Hebbel am Ufer und die Sophiensaele in Berlin, das Nowy Teatr und das Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warschau, das BWA Wrocław, das CAC Vilnius, das M HKA Antwerp und das ICK Amsterdam. Residencies führen sie 2021 an das Ankara Queer Art in der Türkei und das Q21 MuseumsQuartier in Wien. Nowak lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Barbara Raes war von 2000 bis 2014 künstlerische Leiterin der Kunstzentren Vooruit (Gent) und BUDA (Kortrijk), bevor sie im Zuge einer Neuorientierung 2014 an einem Residency-Programm des FoAM (Brüssel) teilnahm. In diesem Rahmen machte sie in Totnes (GB) eine Ausbildung zur Ritualmeisterin und ist seither als Vermittlerin zwischen den Feldern von Kunst, Fürsorge, Ritual und Momenten des Abschieds tätig. Von 2015 bis 2018 arbeitete Barbara an einem interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekt zur Entwicklung neuer mentaler und physischer Räume für Rituale des Abschieds

an der School of Arts Ghent. Darüber hinaus gründete Barbara Raes die Organisation Beyond the Spoken, einen Arbeitsraum zum Umgang mit “Unacknowledged Loss”. Im Rahmen von Beyond the Spoken gestaltet sie Rituale zur Unterstützung von Menschen, die in ihrem Leben größere oder kleinere Einschnitte erleben (etwa Abtreibungen, Trennungen, Operationen, Jobwechsel, Kinderlosigkeit usw.). Barbara gibt ihre Praxis der Verknüpfung von Kunst, Fürsorge und Ritualen an den Universitäten Gent und Utrecht weiter. Sie hat mehrere Festivals rund um die Themen Tod, Trauer, Abschied und Rituale kuratiert, etwa “Amen & Beyond” (Vooruit, Gent) und “Unacknowledged Loss” (HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Kaaitheater, Dublin Theater Festival, de Singel). Für das Festival “Theater aan Zee” entwickelte sie “Zon dag kind”, ein Trauerritual für Kinder, das bis heute in Belgien große Bedeutung hat.

Liz Rosenfeld (USA/DE) lebt und arbeitet als Künstlerin in Berlin und beschäftigt sich mit Film/Video, Performance und experimentellen Schreibtechniken.

Liz erkundet die Nachhaltigkeit von emotionaler und politischer Ökologie und greift dabei verschiedene Herangehensweisen und die Geschichte von Vergangenheit und Zukunft im Zusammenhang mit Arten der Queerung der Erinnerung auf. In ihrer Arbeit geht sie vom Körper als nicht-binärem kollaborativen Material aus und befasst sich insbesondere mit dem Potenzial des physischen Überflusses und Exzesses, um Fragen nach Verantwortung und dem Privileg,

Raum zu besetzen, zu beantworten.

Ausgehend vom Persönlichen liegen ihrem Schaffen Fragen nach der Verankerung queerer Ontologien in politisch und persönlich unterschiedlichen Formen verlogenen Begehrens zugrunde.

Liz ist Teil des internationalen Filmkollektivs nowMomentnow, und ihre Filme werden von Video Data Bank und LUX Moving Image vertrieben.

Falk Rößler wurde 1983 in Frankfurt (Oder) geboren. Er absolvierte zunächst ein Studium der Europäischen Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Potsdam und studierte anschließend Angewandte Theaterwissenschaften an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Mit der Gruppe Die Resilentes erarbeitete er zwischen 2010 und 2012 mehrere ortsbezogene Produktionen in Barcelona und Gießen. 2011 gründete er zusammen mit Nele Stuhler und Stephan Dorn die Gruppe FUX. Arbeiten des Kollektivs werden im deutschsprachigen Raum u.a. am HAU Hebbel am Ufer, den Münchner Kammerspielen, dem Schauspielhaus Wien, dem Mousonturm Frankfurt, dem Theater Oberhausen, der Gessnerallee Zürich gezeigt. FUX wurden 2014, 2016 und 2019 in der Kritikerumfrage der Zeitschrift “Theater heute” als beste Nachwuchskünstler:innen nominiert und erhielten 2016 den ersten Ponto-Performance-Preis der Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung.

Ihre Produktion “Was ihr wollt: Der Film” wurde zu den Autorentheatertagen am Deutschen Theater Berlin 2020 eingeladen. Ihr partizipativer Theaterfilm “From Horror Till Oberhausen” war beim DRA-

MA|TIK|ER|INNEN|FESTIVAL Graz 2021 zu Gast. Falk Rößler arbeitet darüber hinaus als Musiker, Performer, Theater- und Hörspielregisseur und ist als Publizist tätig – u.a. mit dem Theater-Podcast “Klima der Angst”, den er gemeinsam mit Janis El-Bira führt.

Colin Self lebt als Künstler, Komponist und Choreograf in New York und Berlin.

Self entwickelt Musik und Performances, die Binaritäten ins Schwanken bringen und mit den Grenzen der Wahrnehmung spielen. In der Arbeit mit diversen Gemeinschaften nutzt Self Stimmen, Körper und Computer als Interface zu biologischer und technologischer Software.

Self ist Dozent am Berliner Clive Davis Institute der New York University. Arbeiten von Self wurden u.a. in der Niederländischen Nationaloper, dem HAU Hebbel am Ufer, dem New Museum, The Kitchen NYC und dem Issue Project Room sowie bei zahlreichen Festivals gezeigt. Self erhielt ein Stipendium der Rhizome Commission und ist Queer Art Mentorship Fellow. Außerdem war Self 2016 Eyebeam Resident und 2018 Resident Fellow von Etopia for FUGA in Saragossa, Spanien.

Darüber hinaus ist Self Mitbegründer des New Yorker Queer-Kollektivs Chez Deep und von The Radical Diva Grant. Self machte seinen Master of Fine Arts am Bard College. Self verbindet eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit Holly Herndon, und seit 2015 geht Self mit ihrem Ensemble auf Tour. Self betreibt den internationalen, nicht zweckgebundenen Vokalworkshop XOIR, der sich mit alternativen Formen des gemeinsamen Singens be-

fasst, und veröffentlicht eigene Musik auf dem Plattenlabel RVNG Intl.

Joana Tischkau ist freischaffende Choreografin und Performerin. In ihren Arbeiten versucht sie, die Absurdität und Willkür diverser Unterdrückungsmechanismen aufzuzeigen, und bedient sich dabei an postkolonialen Theorien, feministischen Diskursen und popkulturellen Phänomenen. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Frankfurt am Main und Berlin. Ihre Inszenierung “Playblack” wurde 2019 Im Rahmen von “Alles ist Material. 20 Jahre ‘Postdramatisches Theater’” am HAU gezeigt.

2020 folgte das “Deutsche Museum für Schwarze Unterhaltung und Black Music”, ein Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsformat mit Anta Helena Recke, Elisabeth Hampe und Frieder Blume.

Geboren und aufgewachsen in der Türkei, lebt und arbeitet Enis Turan zurzeit freischaffend als Tänzer und Choreograf.

Er studierte zeitgenössischen Tanz an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln und der Universität der Künste Island und absolvierte 2015 die Lehrerausbildung für pole fitness (L1) unter der Leitung von Marlo Fisken. Sein künstlerisches Interesse im Tanz liegt an der Schnittstelle konzeptioneller Arbeiten mit hohem physischen/performativen Einsatz wie auch an der Schnittstelle der Tanzkunst mit anderen Kunstformen. Bei der Ausarbeitung liegt sein Fokus stark auf Widersprüchen und deren Verschmelzung. Unmittelbar vor “Unacknowledged Loss II” war seine letzte Arbeit “Club27”, die von Tod, Vergänglich-

keit und Verewigung handelt, auf der Bühne im HAU Hebbel am Ufer zu sehen.

Als “besonders talentiert” wurde er 2014 während seines Tanzstudiums mit einem Stipendium von Lancôme ausgezeichnet und erhielt im Sommer 2017 das danceWEB-Stipendium im Rahmen des ImPuls Tanz Festivals in Wien. Neben seinen eigenen choreografischen Arbeiten tanzte er bisher u.a. für Josep Caballero Garcia, Sebastian Matthias, Erna Ómarsdóttir, Dewey Dell, Alfredo Zinola, Marie-Lena Kaiser und TachoTinta.

Welche Rolle spielen Trauer- und Abschiedsrituale in unserer Zeit und wie können wir Räume schaffen, in denen sich Kunst, Fürsorge und Rituale begegnen? Die Kuratorin Barbara Raes hat 2020 bereits zum zweiten Mal auf Einladung des internationalen Produktionshauses HAU Hebbel am Ufer mit Berliner Künstler:innen zu diesen Fragen recherchiert. In dem Versuch, einen unbefangenen Zugang zu diesen Themen zu schaffen und damit ein gesellschaftliches Tabu zu brechen, sind neun sehr persönliche Arbeiten rund ums Abschiednehmen entstanden, die dieses Buch dokumentiert – mit Beiträgen von den Künstler:innen Olympia Bukkakis, Dragana Bulut, Nuray Demir, Mmakgosi Kgabi, Ania Nowak, Falk Rößler, Liz Rosenfeld, Colin Self, Joana Tischkau und Enis Turan.

How do rituals of mourning and letting go play a role in our world today, and can they mingle and fuse with the arts and issues of care, if we create the right spaces? At the invitation of the international production house HAU Hebbel am Ufer, curator Barbara Raes has explored these questions in collaboration with Berlin-based artists for the second time. The endeavour to forge an uninhibited approach to grief and so break a social taboo provoked nine highly personal pieces of work on the broader ramifications of (unacknowledged) loss, which this book now documents – with contributions by artists Olympia Bukkakis, Dragana Bulut, Nuray Demir, Mmakgosi Kgabi, Ania Nowak, Barbara Raes, Falk Rößler, Liz Rosenfeld, Colin Self, Joana Tischkau and Enis Turan.
