Lilly Singh excited about her late-night debut Lilly Singh describes this stage of her life as “the calm before the storm.” The Toronto-raised YouTube sensation known

as “Superwoman” says she’s in the process of hiring a team for her trailblazing and highly anticipated late-night talk show that’s set to start in September on NBC and Global. Announced in March, “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” replaces Carson Daly’s slot, making the Indian-Canadian actresscomedian-writer the first woman of colour to host a daily late-night show on a major broadcast network. “I am meeting with showrunners, directors, writers, head writers to try to build a team that not only is super talented but is representative of the world and also people I enjoy being with, because I’m going to spend a lot of time with them,” Singh, 30, said Monday in an interview. “So I’m in that point of the process, which is really exciting -- but

South Asian taxi driver facing deportation to India for sexual assault of passenger In his bid to remain in Canada, Gurpreet Singh Gill lamented the impact of his crime on many collateral victims. His wife — who faces the loss of her home. His daughter — who may have to leave private school and dance lessons. His son — born 10 days before Gill sexually assaulted a passenger in his taxi cab in 2012. But there’s one victim the 42-year-old didn’t mention in his plea for compassion from a Canadian Federal Court judge: the young woman who said

Gill’s actions changed her life forever. “I am already filled with regret from my actions and conviction. I have brought shame to my family, and I understand that there are consequences for my conduct,” Gill wrote in an affidavit sworn to bolster his case to avoid deportation.

Air pollution in India kills more than one hundred thousand children under the age of five every year Air pollution kills more than one lakh children under the age of five in India every year, and it is responsible for 12.5% of all deaths in the country, the Centre for Science and Environment said in a report published on Tuesday on the eve of World Environment Day. On an average, 8.5 out of every 10,000 children die because of bad air before they turn five, but the figure for girls is even higher, at 9.6 per 10,000. The think tank reported a 22% increase in India’s greenhouse gas emissions between 2010 and 2014. It added that the government’s

schemes to fight air pollution have not been successful yet, which is also acknowledged by the environment ministry, PTI reported. In April, Bostonheadquartered Health Effects Institute released a study that said air pollution killed 1.2 million people in India in 2017. According to review papers published by Forum of International Respiratory Societies in February, air pollution can potentially affect every organ and cell

ISI planning to revive militancy in Punjab To revive Sikh militancy in Punjab, Pakistan has worked out a “deeply classified plan”, say Intelligence agencies in a report submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Officials in the North Block are now trying to ascertain their number as well as location. Sources in the MHA, citing the report, claimed that Khalistan activists residing in Canada had been assigned the task of reviving militancy in Punjab under “Project Harvesting Canada”. Some had been asked to target retired police officers and Army veterans to incite violence in the state, they said. Noting that the MHA had been taking such Intelligence reports “very seriously”, the sources said it was a fact that Pakistan’s ISI had been helping Khalistan activists in their designs to foment unrest in North India. They

said the MHA had directed the agencies to ascertain the number of Khalistan activists the Inter-Services Intelligence had roped in and the “specific location of their networks”. It is also reported the InterServices Intelligence has been circulating “several fake documents” related to India’s armed forces. The Inter-Services Intelligence is reportedly seeking the help of separatist group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) to create dissent. “The Inter-Services Intelligence is hatching a plot with the SFJ to instigate Sikh youth against India. It was earlier associated with Hafiz Saeed’s Jamaat-ud-Dawa for training,” the sources added. Codename ‘Project Harvesting Canada’ According to Intelligence Continued on page 6
