Surrey has 48 candidate for 1 Mayor and 8 Councillors Only one of every six candidates for Surrey city council will be elected on Oct. 20. Surrey First, which has led the municipality since 2008 (and has been been elected to every seat in the last two elections), was the last party to unveil its full slate of candidates — but a number of independent candidates came forward in the final week before the deadline, for a total of 48 candidates in all. That’s up from 35 in 2014 and 27 in 2011. Here’s a brief look at who has declared. The list will be updated if anyone removes their name from the ballot before the Sept. 21 deadline. Surrey First (eight council candidates and one mayoral candidate): Incumbent councillors Vera LeFranc and Mike Starchuk, with newcomers Linda Annis, Narima Dela Cruz, Trevor Halford, Paul Hillsdon, Upkar Tatlay and Raminder Thomas. Current councillor Tom Gill is the candidate for mayor. Surrey Integrity Now (five council candidates and one mayoral candidate): Incumbent councillors Dave Woods and Barbara Steele (who switched to Integrity Now this election), along with Avi Dhaliwal, John Gibeau and Rina Gill. Current councillor Bruce Hayne is the candidate for mayor. Safe Surrey Coalition (eight council candidates and one mayoral candidate): Doug Elford, Laurie Guerra, Jack Hundial, Mandeep Nagra, Brenda Locke, Allison Patton, Steven Pettigrew and Bableen Rana. Former mayor Doug McCallum is the candidate for mayor. Independent Surrey Voters Association (five council candidates): Saira Aujla, Bernie Sheppard, Nasima Nastoh, Asad Syed and Derek Zabel. South Asian gang associate shot dead in targeted hit A 19-year-old gang associate who posed a “significant risk� to the public has been shot dead outside a mall in Mission. Investigators say Varinderpal Singh Gill (pictured) was targeted and shot outside the Mission Junction Mall around 9pm on Wednesday. Officers with the RCMP Serious Crimes section said Integrated Homicide Investigation Team detectives have been called in. Gill was pronounced dead at the scene, which isn’t far from a movie theatre and a number of restaurants. “This was a

brazen shooting in a busy shopping complex,� said Cpl. Frank Jang with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. “There were people around ... really, it’s by the grace of God or whatever you want to call it that nobody else was hurt other than Mr. Gill.� Abbotsford police issued a public warning about Gill in August, saying he was believed to be involved with gang conflicts in the city as well as around the Lower Mainland. Former Delta man facing 7 charges related to teen prostitution A former Delta man now residing in Coquitlam is facing seven charges in relation to human trafficking and prostitution involving underage girls. Police reached out to the public on Friday with the belief their may be more alleged victims. Mohammed Begg,

35, is facing six counts of prostitution and human trafficking and one count of assault. The investigation into the alleged prostitution ring started in May 2017, Delta police said in a news release Continued on page 6

Sikh group plans to hold Khalistan referendum in Canadian cities A prominent pro-separatist Sikh organization says it plans to hold polls in several Canadian cities as part of a worldwide referendum for an independent Sikh nation called Khalistan in India‘s Punjab state. Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) says it is targeting Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver to join some 100 cities worldwide where Sikhs will be polled

in a non-binding referendum as part of a campaign dubbed “Referendum 2020.� The group, which has branches in New York, Toronto and London, says it’s seeking to use the planned November 2020 referendum to assess the appetite for an independent Khalistan, before presenting its case for a binding referendum to the United Nations.
