Delhi residents buy water on black market
M
illions of people living in the Indian capital, Delhi, are having to buy water from private contractors because of shortages in supply. About 20% of Delhi’s population have no access to piped water and have to be supplied by water tankers. But the difference between demand and supply is more than 750 million litres a day. So people are turning to the illegal, so-called water mafia to stay hydrated. Sanjoy Majumder visited the streets where the water mafia rule, and saw them replenishing their supplies.
Water will be scarce in India by 2025, govt admits India is faced with the alarming prospect of becoming water scarce in 10 years’ time, or by 2025, the government has said citing a study by a consulting firm in the water sector. In his reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat yesterday said that consulting firm ‘Everything About Water’ (EA Water) has concluded that India’s demand for water is expected to exceed all current sources of supply and the country is set to become water scarce by the year 2025.

India ‘to overtake China’s population by 2022’ - UN A new UN study of global population trends predicts that India will overtake China to become the world’s most populous nation by 2022. The report also says that Nigeria will replace the US as the world’s third most populous country by around 2050. State funeral for former Indian president
T
ens of thousands of people have attended the funeral of former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the state funeral, which was held in Kalam’s native town of Rameshwaram. He served as India’s 11th president from 2002 to 2007 and was known as “Missile Man” after pioneering the country’s military missile programme. He died on Monday after collapsing as he delivered a scientific lecture. The funeral was
carried out with full military honours and attended by prominent political leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Thousands of people lined the roads to get a last glimpse of his body as it was taken from his ancestral home to a local mosque.
