1. THE ATMOSPHERE, WEATHER AND CLIMATE ATMOSPHERE - It’s a layer of gases that surrounds the Earth - It’s about 1,000 kilometres thick - It’s made up of oxigen, nitrogen and other gases (argon, ozone and carbon dioxide) - It’s made life possible on Earth: ●

1. living things need its gases to breathe

2. it regulates the Earth’s temprature

3. it’s a barrier against ultraviolet radiation

●

4. it’s protects the Earth from meteorites

1. THE ATMOSPHERE, WEATHER AND CLIMATE • Atmosphere is divided into 5 layers: • 1. Troposphere: where meteorological phenomena take place.

• 2. Stratosphere: where is the ozone layer (that absorbs ultraviolet rays and therefore protects us from harmful radiation).

• 3. Mesosphere: is the coldest part of the atmosphere.

• 4. Thermosphere: polar auroras (or northern lights) occurs in it.

• 5. Exosphere: - Artificial satellites orbit in it.

1. THE ATMOSPHERE, WEATHER AND CLIMATE WEATHER AND CLIMATE - Meteorological phenomena: - occur in the atmosphere - give rise (dan lugar a ) to the weather and climate.

- WEATHER: refers to the meteorological conditions in a place at a specific time. ●

Meteorology: the scientific study of the weather.

- CLIMATE: is the usual state of the atmosphere over a long period of time. ●

Climatology: is the scientific study of climate.

- As a result of the Earth’ rotational tilt, there are different climate zones: ●

Polar zones: near both poles

Temperate zones: in both hemispheres

●

Tropical zones: near the equator
