We enjoyed an important victory over AFC Wimbledon here earlier in the week. We were ruthless in front of goal and if your finishing is that clinical, then it will always give you a chance in every match – that’s why managers are willing to pay so much money for forwards. Our passing moves and set-up play were also impressive and we were delighted with both the performance and the outcome.

When you’re in our position at this stage of the season, every fixture becomes a key one and the next game is always the most important. We’ve got a lot of portsmouthfc.co.uk

We’re looking forward to today’s test against Hull, although it is just one match and we know that nothing will be decided by 5pm this evening. But it is good to be able to affect the sides above you in the table and they are where they are for a reason. They’ll be looking to go straight back up into the Championship and are fully capable of doing that with the squad at their disposal. We’ll show them the respect they deserve, but fear nobody and have every reason to feel confident with the way we’re playing at the moment.

OUR LATEST SKY BET LEAGUE ONE FIXTURE TAKING PLACE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SEES HULL CITY VISITING FRATTON PARK THIS AFTERNOON was a great performance Iontagainst AFC Wimbledon here Tuesday evening. There was

some fantastic finishing on display and we were able to keep yet another clean sheet, so it pretty much summed up how we’ve been playing in the league lately. It was nice to see Harvey White come on in the second half to make his debut and he certainly looked very assured in his short time on the pitch. Looking at the way he was interacting with the other lads, he seems to have fitted into the squad quickly.

I’ve read about the club post-war league record for minutes without conceding that we could break today and it’s always positive to reach those milestones. But the only statistic I’m really concerned about at the moment is seeing ourselves sitting in the top two come the end of the season.

We’re on an amazing run of form, although everyone has to remember that we’re not even halfway through the campaign yet and there are sure to be plenty of twists and turns ahead. Saying that, when you’ve built up some momentum, it’s important to continue maximising your points total.

We’ll be looking to do that by beating a Hull side who I expect to be competing for automatic promotion, whatever the outcome this afternoon. We’ve got three huge matches over the next portsmouthfc.co.uk

I’m constantly being asked questions about when fans will be allowed back into grounds, whether the season could be suspended or what’s going to happen with the EFL Trophy final. The simple answer is that your guess is as good as mine!

t was only five weeks ago that Ileapfrog Pompey won 2-0 at Hull to their opponents to the

summit and claim the third tier’s Christmas number one.

And Kenny Jackett’s side could snatch top spot from the Tigers again if they are able to collect a maximum haul at Fratton Park this afternoon.

This time, however, there is a third party in play, with secondplaced Lincoln also required to drop points from their home clash with Northampton.

Today sees the start of a vital run of games for the Blues against fellow promotion hopefuls, with the Imps heading to the south coast on Tuesday evening, which precedes a trip to Charlton next weekend.

But Pompey can take confidence from seeing off Peterborough, Ipswich and Hull – and claiming four points from a couple of meetings with Fleetwood – in recent weeks.

If their New Year’s resolution was to get back on track, though, then it has certainly paid off during an unbeaten start to 2021.

Draws with Sunderland and Blackpool – the latter of which saw Hull play the closing stages with 10 men – were bookended by victories over Charlton and Accrington.

They beat Stanley 3-0 on home soil earlier in the week, courtesy of goals from Mallik Wilks, Gavin Whyte and, from the penalty spot, Magennis.

January has also seen them progress to the quarter-finals of the Papa John’s Trophy – although they did it the hard way.

They have enjoyed success at Gillingham (2-0), Northampton (2-0), Rochdale (3-0), Bristol Rovers (3-1), MK Dons (3-1) and Ipswich (3-0).

The last of those came towards the end of November, however, with the Tigers not winning any of their past three fixtures on the road.

You have to go back to March 2012 to find the last time the sides met at Fratton Park, with Chris Maguire and Joel Ward on target to ensure the hosts came out on top in a Championship contest.

HOMEGROWN HEROES FOOTBALL HISTORIAN LEIGH EDWARDS PROFILES FIVE PLAYERS WHO PROGRESSED THROUGH THE HULL RANKS ANDY DAVIDSON

Long-serving right-back Davidson holds Hull’s appearance record.

Turning professional at Boothferry Park in September 1949, ‘Jock’ made his debut in the club’s 2-0 defeat at Blackburn three years later and was an influential figure as they won third tier promotion in 1958/59. He became captain and missed just one match as the Tigers secured the Division Three title and took Chelsea to an FA Cup sixth round replay in 1965/66. Ever-present seven times, Davidson netted 19 goals in 579 appearances before joining the coaching staff, then was chief scout and had a mobile fish round.

He died in Beverley in April 2014.

CHRIS CHILTON Long-serving striker Chilton holds the Tigers’ all-time scoring record.

Signing professional terms with the club in July 1960, he made his debut at Colchester a month later and quickly impressed with portsmouthfc.co.uk

his aerial strength. He was leading marksman as Hull secured the Division Three crown and reached the last eight of the FA Cup in 1965/66, also starring in their 1970/71 cup run. Netting 222 goals in 477 outings, Chilton moved to Coventry for £92,000 in the summer of 1971, but injury soon ended his playing career. He later coached back at Boothferry Park, then was a painter and decorator, settling in Thorngumbald.

BRIAN MARWOOD Fast, tricky winger Marwood was leading marksman in Hull’s 1982/83 Division Four promotion success. Turning professional in February 1978, he was also top scorer as the Tigers reached the Associate Members’ Cup final in 1984, hitting 51 goals in 158 league games before being sold to Sheffield Wednesday for £115,000 in August 1984.

Marwood was an FA Cup semifinalist in 1985/86 and joined Arsenal in March 1988, featuring prominently in as they became champions of England in 1988/89.

Later appearing for Sheffield United, Swindon and Barnet, he had a spell as PFA chairman and has since worked in the media.

PETER SKIPPER Central defender Skipper was an ever-present for the Tigers in three successive seasons. Born locally, he turned professional in September 1978 and made his debut in a 5-3 defeat at Swansea six months later. He left for Darlington in the summer of 1980, but returned a couple of years later. Starring as Hull rose from fourth tier to second between 1982 and 1985, Skipper was also 11

an Associate Members’ Cup finalist in 1984 and netted 19 goals in 288 league matches overall before joining Oldham in October 1988.

He later turned out for Walsall, Wrexham, Wigan (twice) and Stafford Rangers, then had various jobs and died in April 2019.

DEAN WINDASS

Striker Windass struck Hull’s winner in the 2007/08 Championship play-off final. A former Tigers trainee, he had a spell with North Ferriby before returning to the club in October 1991. He was leading marksman three times, moving on to Aberdeen in December 1995, then Oxford in the summer of 1998. Signing for Bradford less than a year later, Windass helped them reach the top-flight and later appeared for Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, then had a second stint with the Bantams, where he was top scorer on five occasions. Returning to the KCOM Stadium in January 2007, he netted 77 goals in 236 league games overall before signing for Darlington in 2009. @Pompey

Pompey moved to within a point of the League One summit following a comfortable victory over struggling AFC Wimbledon on the wet and windy south coast.

The game took a while to get into gear, although Sam Walker had to dive down to deal with a bending strike from Andy Cannon.

And the opener arrived courtesy of a fine passing move, as Michael Jacobs swept the ball across to Callum Johnson, who delivered a cross from the right.

That was met by a glancing Ryan Williams header that might have been heading for the net, but John Marquis arrived at the back post to make sure.

Williams did have a goal soon after, though, collecting a pass from Marquis, taking a couple of touches and curling home a fine left-footed shot from the edge of the box.

The contest appeared to be all over by the interval, as Sean Raggett converted Jacobs’ freekick with a firm header late in the first half.

Wimbledon never looked like finding a route back into the contest after the restart, while Ellis Harrison twice went close at the other end.

But it was fellow substitute Ben Close who wrapped things up in the closing stages, being teed-up by Ronan Curtis to drill the ball into the bottom corner.

et’s face it, if football were L like most other industries, then it would have been

temporarily shut down after two or three teams from League One called off their games following positive Covid-19 tests. The fact that these clubs then had to justify the postponements is, quite frankly, a disgrace and suggested that these affected sides had ulterior motives. It appears that common sense and empathy is at an all-time low at a time when these qualities are needed most.

Take Pompey as a prime example.

They went top of the league following a splendid victory at today’s opponents Hull on a Friday evening just before Christmas. By the time the weekend was over, Jack Whatmough and a couple of other players has all tested positive for this terrible virus.

Naturally – and correctly – our next couple of league fixtures against Swindon and Bristol Rovers were both suspended. You then have to justify and explain why this has happened. When seven games fall by the wayside on one single day late in 2020, surely it is obvious. Perhaps the EFL could be a bit clearer on the issues, as a depleted AFC Wimbledon went ahead with their match against Lincoln, while others were called off at short notice.

It would be good to have more consistency in proceedings, rather than have clubs fearing reprisals if they are unable to play.

Particularly now that the whole country is in another lockdown, we should be taking people at face value, rather than demanding documentation and accusing

At the time when League One fixtures were getting postponed left, right and centre, there did not seem to be many cancellations in the fourth tier, despite coronavirus cases rising all over the country. Were these sides perhaps fearful of being deducted points or suffering other punishments and deciding to play on, despite any risk to health?

When the Manchester City squad were affected, suddenly games being suspended warranted column inches and airtime in the national media. Little did I realise that the pandemic is apparently just as elitist as the football world.

At a time when football requires strong leaders and a sense of compassion, we should be asking for our governing bodies to come up with stronger answers and not throw it back to the clubs to deal with.

23 1971 A last-gasp leveller from Mike Trebilcock (above) earned the Blues a 1-1 draw against Arsenal in an FA Cup fourth round contest that was watched by 36,659 at Fratton Park.

1990 Frank Burrows replaced John Gregory to begin his second spell as Pompey boss, having guided the club to Division Four promotion in his previous stint.

can remember it well. At Iyoungsters 5.30pm on Friday, us had already long since

embarked on a boozy session that involved visiting several social clubs in New Lane, Havant.

Industry was booming at the time and the road in question housed a line of big factories, all with drinking establishments for their workforce. If one knew the right people, you could be signed in as a guest.

The attraction was the heavily subsidised beer prices and the fact that as private clubs, they could bypass antiquated licensing laws that prevented pubs from opening their doors until 6pm.

Back then, I couldn’t have imagined that Pompey would one day be involved in a televised top-ofthe-table clash at Hull – inside an empty stadium – at around the time we would be entering the Rapid Data Social Club.

Indeed, it was unthinkable – both live lower division football on the television and the fact it was kicking-off on a Friday when most workers would have barely clocked off. The result of the game last month meant that the Blues reached the League One summit by the time we would have arrived in Havant Town Centre.

You see, everything used to have its time and place. Friday night – and part of the following morning – was an exclusive drinking slot for young men, while Saturday afternoons were reserved for the football.

There was something else about those days. I was able to drink into the early hours and still be brighteyed enough to catch the 5am train out of Havant to somewhere up north, with everyone uniformly kicking-off at the same time.

Admittedly, I was only in my early 30s when the combination of a regular Friday night session followed by an early morning departure for Hull came about.

This contest took place at the quaint and atmospheric Boothferry Park in an era just before many clubs left for grander abodes that they often struggled to fill.

So, as I watched the latest contest unfold before Christmas, the most striking element was the empty modern stadium – another victim of this terrible virus.

It brought back memories of that earlier trip, when I arrived at the station just before midday 19

and boarded a bus to the ground, disembarking when I spotted floodlights around 10 minutes later.

Finding an appropriately located pub – albeit rather empty for a matchday – I entered, congratulating myself on both my impeccable timing and sense of direction.

It was around 45 minutes before kick-off that my concerns started to rise about the lack of human presence in an age when lockdown was the landlord shutting the doors and you continuing to drink.

After making a discreet enquiry, it became apparent that for the past couple of hours I had been sat outside Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby Club, from where a hastily arranged taxi ride saw me journey to the correct destination with no time to spare.

Still, these were carefree days, soon to be rudely interrupted by the ageing process, mass closures of factories, the advent of the Premier League and a deadly pandemic.

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. COMING UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT IN THIS ISSUE IS A PERENNIAL FAVOURITE – CRITICISM OF THE REFEREE, WITH SOME CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN POMPEY AND THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE IN THE LATE 1960s Good job VAR has sorted out that issue, eh?

Very droll. Like the poor, criticism of referees has always been with us and on October 11 1969, when Bristol City came to Fratton Park in the old second division, poor old BH Daniels (pictured) of Brentwood found himself on the receiving end.

Difficult game was it?

Bookings? Sendings off?

Controversy?

That’s the funny thing. When we dredged the report from the Evening News of the game from the archive, it was all so innocuous. Nothing much happened in a tame 0-0 draw in front of a crowd of 14,900.

However, on the following Tuesday, the club received a letter from league secretary Alan Hardaker asking for the reasons for the ‘low marking’ of Mr Daniels’ performance. He’d been given one out of 10.

Cripes! I thought you got at least four, provided you were wearing the right kit and everything!

‘One’ does seem a tad harsh for sure. A couple of days later, the club’s general manager George Smith – who would have been in charge of the team that day – replied and we have the carbon copy in the archive.

[of the game]’ which ‘left a lot to be desired’ and ‘failed’ in terms of ‘confidence and efficiency, personality etc’. Smith concluded that it was only the ‘correct attitude’ of the players which ‘saved the situation’.

That ‘etc’ sounds like it’s doing some heavy lifting...

Quite. Tall and thin, Brian, to give him his name, was a regular official of Pompey games from the late 1960s until the 1980s.

‘A married man, with two sons’, according to his pen picture, he also had hobbies of ‘ballroom dancing’ and ‘coarse fishing’ and took an interest in ‘local junior football and organises charity games’. Sounds like an all-round good guy. Given the absence of any other evidence, we’re going to put Smith’s tetchiness down to the fact Pompey had started the season with three Fratton defeats in five games and this goalless draw was their second at home on the trot.

What did it say?

Smith felt Mr Daniels was ‘prone to do too much whistling’ although, to be fair, that’s an occupational hazard for referees.

He also came in for criticism about his ‘interpretations of the laws The Pompey History Society is a charitable organisation looking to preserve and conserve the club’s archive.

COMMUNITY PULLS TOGETHER AGAIN hen the latest national lockdown was W announced earlier this month, it was very much a feeling of ‘here we go again’ for Pompey in

the Community (PitC). During the first one, local businesses and individuals came together under the HIVE umbrella to provide hot food and care packages to thousands of people across the city. It has been no different this time around, although with even more volunteers offering both time and resources.

Jeanette Warren, landlady of The Lady Hamilton pub, has been cooking up 100 meals a day, along with PitC’s community chef Gavin Randall. They have been using ingredients purchased with the help of Barclays Community Aid Fund of £100,000, which was awarded to the charity last year.

The programme, which forms part of Barclay’s wider Covid-19 Community Aid Packages, focuses on supporting UK charity partners who are meeting the immediate needs of people in the communities, including low income families, those facing financial hardship, isolated elderly people and key workers.

Clare Martin, PitC’s director of community projects, said: “This funding has really supported us in providing the city with such a vital and impactful service during the pandemic. Our provision is continually developing in direct response to the needs of the city and an ever evolving situation.

“It’s been a real privilege to be able to support so

many people and thanks to Barclays and our other local partners, we look forward to continuing to do so.”

Once the meals are cooked, they are being distributed by staff and volunteers from Richmond Motor Group and PitC. The former have been providing cars and drivers to help support the project and in doing so, have been able to give Jeanette and the team more time to spend preparing the meals, ensuring that more people are able to benefit from the scheme. They also use electric vehicles to help keep the campaign as green as possible, helping the environment as well as the community.

Michael Nobes, managing director of Richmond Motor Group, said: “This is a great local project that really demonstrates how the people of Portsmouth can pull together to support their local community.

As a local business, we are delighted to be able to help this initiative and deliver support to those who need it most – and be involved in giving back to our community.”

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND he season is whistling past.

T Perhaps it feels like it is moving faster than usual because we are not allowed to go and watch it. It will be February in nine days’ time and this being the case, I’m slightly alarmed that so far, I have filled in only three seasons’ games in my attempt to remember one from each of my years as a Pompey fan, of which this is the 40th.

For those not paying attention earlier in the campaign, I’ve named matches against Orient (May 1983), Brighton (March 1984) and Tottenham (December 1985) as special ones from their respective seasons. So without further ado, here are some other memories from different 80s favourites.

My aim is to recall games other than the really obvious ones and for 1981/82, my first season as a fan, I'm going for a 2-0 win at home to Chester, played on May 1.

It was not a particularly stunning fixture – the result mattered not to a team heading for a mid-table finish. And fans certainly wouldn’t still be talking about it pre-match in The Shepherd’s Crook today, even if the Crook was open and fans were allowed into such establishments.

For the record, Pompey eased past the men from Sealand Road – who I imagine were playing in a faded all-yellow kit, as most away teams did in that era – thanks to goals by Billy Rafferty and, from the spot, Bobby Doyle.

Well after a 0-0 draw with Doncaster a fortnight earlier that must have held some appeal to this young fan, my defences broke down as easily as Chester’s were about to and along I went. And I never went back to the mindset of not wanting to go every game I could.

The significance for me was that it was the first time I’d attended two successive home games. Having been press-ganged into joining my dad and sister at Fratton fixtures from the start of the season, I’d shown a certain level of resistance, saying I’d only go once a month – ie,

What about cherished occasions from my early days? My 1984/85 highlight would have to be the Easter Monday trip to Fulham, when an Alan Ball team inspired by the magic feet of Neil Webb and Kevin Dillon carved up the Cottagers for a 3-1 win. I can still recall now the feeling, as we queued in the sunshine at the Tube station afterwards with Pompey chants and songs filling the air, we were on our way to Division One. We weren’t, as it turned out.

The 1986/87 season is a funny one – for a promotion run, there were precious few standout games.

But I’ll pick out a midweek 3-1 home victory over our big rivals for the prize, Derby. It was three days after our first defeat – at Leeds – which had sparked nerves among fans that we were about to hit a poor late-autumn run of form, like the one that had derailed us a year earlier.

For the 1987/88 Division One campaign, I’m going not for the win at The Dell, but our first away success of the campaign – a 1-0 triumph at Norwich thanks to a Barry Horne goal. The atmosphere at Carrow Road that day was intense – the home fans spent the whole time chanting ‘Chase out, Chase out’ in protest at their chairman and I remember it being a very nervy 90 minutes when we were convinced we wouldn’t hang on, but we did.
