EARTH STAKES

● Earth stakes must be installed in moist ground.

● Must be at least 15m away from domestic earth installations.

● Higher powered energisers and longer fences need a better earth connection. As a rule of thumb ensure you have 1m of earth rod for each joule of energy – so if you have a 2 joule energiser you will need 2 x 2m earth stakes.

● Multiple earth stakes must be placed at least 3m apart and connected with insulated leadout cable.

● You must have less than 300v on the earth stake for it to be effective.

Without a good earth system your animals will only receive a mild shock, or no shock at all. For an electric fence to work the electric current must find its way back to the energiser which can only happen when something touches the fence. This enables the current to flow to the earth and back to the earth stake of the energiser. You can test the effectiveness of your earth with a voltmeter (find this on page 48) – put the live terminal onto the earth stake and the negative prod into the ground – if you get a reading of more than 300v then your earth system is inadequate. You will need either a longer earth stake and/or additional stakes. When adding earth stakes there must be at least a 3m gap between each stake.

The fence lengths shown are maximum recommended assuming favourable conditions with little or no vegetation. This figure allows for multiple strands provided there are regular interconnecting lines between them. To allow for variations in fence conditions we advise that you select a condutor that is suitable for twice the length of your intended fence.

Electric Fence Specification

ELECTRIC FENCE SPECIFICATIONS

There is no definitive rule as to the number of wires needed on an electric fence, nor the height and spacing they can be set at as each site can be unique and animals do vary in size and temperament. Often, a single electrified wire is enough to contain a docile animal.

If an animal does pass through an electric fence it is usually because either a) it did not touch any electrified wire or b) there was insufficient power on the fence to deter it.

In the first instance you would need to increase the number of wires on the fence, and in the second you would need to check the quality of the earthing, the power of the energizer and the type of conductor you are using.

When erecting a fence for your animals consider where the animal is least insulated, or where current is most likely to be able to penetrate their fur and set lines accordingly.

Some examples of possible configurations of fencing for various animals are illustrated below.

How does it work?

An electric fence only becomes a circuit when there is contact between the fence and the ground at the same time, ie; when an animal touches it. The energiser sends an electrical pulse to the fence which is carried along the tape, rope or wire.

If an animal touches the fence it is acting as a switch allowing the pulse to travel through it to the ground and back to the energiser via the earth rod, thus completing the circuit and giving the animal a mild corrective shock.

Is the voltage on the fence line ....

More than 2500v? Less than 2500v?

Your fence is wo rk ing ok. However if your voltage reading is lower than usual proceed to nex t step.

Your ear th stake should h ave some charge but not more 500v. Either your ear th stake is not in the ground properly, or the soil is too dr y/rocky/sandy. Add additional ear th stakes at a minimum of 2m intervals and connec t using galvanised wire or leadout cable. Continue to add more ear th stakes until the vo ltage on the ear th stake falls below 500v. H as this so rted the problem?
