Pompey moved to within a point of the League One summit following a comfortable victory over struggling AFC Wimbledon on the wet and windy south coast.

The game took a while to get into gear, although Sam Walker had to dive down to deal with a bending strike from Andy Cannon.

And the opener arrived courtesy of a fine passing move, as Michael Jacobs swept the ball across to Callum Johnson, who delivered a cross from the right.

That was met by a glancing Ryan Williams header that might have been heading for the net, but John Marquis arrived at the back post to make sure.

Williams did have a goal soon after, though, collecting a pass from Marquis, taking a couple of touches and curling home a fine left-footed shot from the edge of the box.

The contest appeared to be all over by the interval, as Sean Raggett converted Jacobs’ freekick with a firm header late in the first half.

Wimbledon never looked like finding a route back into the contest after the restart, while Ellis Harrison twice went close at the other end.

But it was fellow substitute Ben Close who wrapped things up in the closing stages, being teed-up by Ronan Curtis to drill the ball into the bottom corner.
