VOCATIONAL COURSES
SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
A Levels are academic two year courses with a high level of theoretical content. They are usually assessed by examinations at the end of the course – either written, or possibly a supervised practical exam, for example in Art. A Levels have a renowned international reputation and are still the primary route for most traditional university applicants.
Vocational courses generally involve fewer, if any, exams, however there may be an element of external assessment. They focus on coursework, and give a balance of practical work and theory. Level 1 and Level 2 courses take one year and you can usually progress from these on to the next level. At Level 3 they are equivalent to AS and A Levels and prepare you for a range of options. Many of our vocational students go on to prestigious universities, while others enter the world of work and then do further study for degree or higher level apprenticeships.
Students select the A Levels they study for a variety of different reasons: they enjoy the subjects, have taken an interest in an area, or feel they ‘ought’ to do a particular subject to keep their options open. It is also, however, worth thinking about how these subjects will help you progress when you leave College. With this in mind, it is a good idea to consider having at least two subjects that go together. This will help you study because the subjects will support each other and they will also help you to progress to university, apprenticeships or into employment.
Amin
Student Profile Amin achieved A*, A, A in Religious Studies, Ancient History and Maths A Levels and is now studying Theology, Religion & Philosophy of Religion at Cambridge University. “The Henley College was the only place in the whole country that I could do the subjects that I love. I [also] felt very much encouraged by the admissions process and inspired by the College’s lovely old buildings. The College had great belief in me and trusted me to do well.” Amin is originally from Iran and joined The Henley College in 2019.

Isobel studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services and achieved triple star distinction (equivalent to 3 A*s at A Level) “I chose to study Public Services as it’s very closely linked to what I want to do for a future career. My course teachers were extremely approachable and supportive throughout the two years. My best memory from my time at the College was the Call of the Wild trip in Wales. It was challenging and pushed me out of my comfort zone.” Isobel joined us from Langtree School and is going to study Professional Policing at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Student Profile Amber is studying A Level Business, Law and Politics as well as 2 Applied A Levels in Criminology and Psychology. “Compared to other colleges and sixth forms I found that The Henley College had the greatest range of courses which has allowed me to pursue all my different interests, ensuring an easier decision for my future career. My mind was made up when I visited the College on an open evening, due to how welcoming and supportive all the teachers were.” Amber joined us from Burnham Grammar School, and is now studying Law at Warwick University.
