TRANSITION AND SUPPORT

The Henley College, with its two campuses, is often likened to a mini university. Life here is certainly different from school, but from the very beginning of your journey with us, we ensure you receive the support needed to stay healthy, feel safe, and achieve your potential.

We understand that the transition from school to college can feel like a big step for some students. From the moment you accept your place, we stay in regular contact, providing useful information and offering transition activities to help you prepare for your chosen programme of study.

In September, our induction programme is carefully designed to ensure every student feels settled and confident in the college environment. At Henley, you'll take greater responsibility for your learning, embracing a more mature approach, while still benefiting from high levels of guidance and support. We believe that students thrive in an open yet purposeful teaching and learning environment, which helps them achieve their best results. Should you need specialised support at any stage, the College has a dedicated team of skilled staff who can assist with a wide range of needs, including study support, career guidance, and help with higher education applications, such as for Oxbridge, Law, and Medicine, as well as arranging work experience and placements.

STUDENT SERVICES – LEARNING SUPPORT AT THE HENLEY COLLEGE

We have a dedicated team of staff who will work with you to identify and address individual learning needs and arrange appropriate support.

We ask that students tell us on the application form of any difficulties that they would like to highlight. If appropriate, a further questionnaire will be sent to you to gather more information, before an interview date is set.

Where possible, a member of the Student Services Team will conduct the interview and will discuss with you the support and reasonable adjustments that we can offer. Those students who have an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan) will be asked to provide us with a copy of the document prior to interview. If a place is offered, you will be invited in during a normal College day, to get an idea of the environment and the support available to you.

Students without an EHCP, but with SEN needs, are welcome to contact us if they would like to meet with the team, familiarise themselves with the site and buildings before the start of the term.

Those students with significant mental health difficulties, please contact either our Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead, or our Welfare Co-ordinator if you require a support plan to be put in place.

Learning Support – One–to–One

This would be a timetabled weekly slot to meet with a Learning Tutor. They will concentrate on time management, assignment and homework planning within your subject areas. You will also be able to discuss any barriers to learning you may have, and they will be your “voice”, liaising with teaching staff on your behalf.

Learning Support – Small Group Support

This would be a timetabled session, offered to some students who need additional support to write, proof read and structure assignments, essays or homework.

Welfare Support

We have a safeguarding team which is responsible for the welfare of the students at the College. We offer safe places and quiet rooms, 1:1 support, drop-in support and counselling. We offer the students the opportunity to have a trusted adult who they can go to if they are struggling.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

At The Henley College, our students join us at a decisive moment in their education. They have spent seven years in school and now step into an environment that will shape their future direction. The next two years are about more than courses and grades. They are about growth, challenge, and possibility. Everything we do is designed to help our students master their subjects, understand how they learn, and discover their voice.

Our teaching is rooted in quality. We place great emphasis on mastery, cognition, metacognition and oracy because these are the foundations that allow students to think with confidence, to question, to connect ideas and to communicate them clearly. It is not enough to learn; our students are encouraged to understand how they learn and to take ownership of that process. In doing so, they gain a deeper knowledge of their subjects and the independence to excel. We believe potential should never be limited. Alongside their courses, students have access to a rich programme of supercurricular and enrichment opportunities that broaden their horizons and raise their ambitions. From specialist societies to work placements and external competitions,

these experiences open doors and prepare students for university, apprenticeships, and careers. Our Aspire Programme supports gifted and talented students, while our Oxbridge Co-ordinator works closely with those aiming for places at the world’s most competitive universities.

The College is an inclusive community where every student is known and supported. We recognise that each individual arrives with different strengths and aspirations, and our role is to nurture both. The Personal and Professional Development Programme helps students build the skills and resilience they will need long after they leave us. We want every student to flourish as a scholar, as a professional, and as a person.

THE SKILLED STUDENT

Communication, Creativity, Care and Collaboration.

This is the heart of our vision for every young person who studies at Henley. We expect our students to be articulate and thoughtful, able to express themselves with clarity. We encourage creativity, whether in problem-solving, design, performance or innovation. We cultivate care for themselves and for others, ensuring that compassion and responsibility underpin their actions. And we develop collaboration, because working with and learning from others is essential in every walk of life.

In two years our students grow in knowledge, confidence and character. They leave us ready to take on the challenges of higher education, employment and the wider world. The Henley College experience is unlike any other because it is not only about what students achieve but about the people they become.

EMPOWERING THE SKILLED STUDENT

At The Henley College we take pride in preparing students not only for success today but also for the opportunities that lie ahead. The launch of Skills England in 2025 represents an important development in shaping the national skills agenda, ensuring that post-16 education is firmly aligned with the needs of employers and the future workforce.

In response, our programmes are carefully designed to combine academic excellence with vocational breadth. This balance provides students with both the intellectual foundation and the practical skills to progress with confidence. Many go on to university study, while others secure places on highly competitive degree apprenticeships that offer a direct pathway into professional careers.

For parents and schools this is a clear assurance that every student at The Henley College benefits from an education that is current, ambitious and responsive to the wider landscape, enabling them to achieve their full potential and flourish in the next stage of their journey.

Aspire students will also be encouraged to join the Student Ambassador and Leadership enrichments which will allow them to play a vital role in representing the student voice, shaping College policy, and will prepare them for running for Student Union in their second year.

A range of Aspire events and enrichments are available to all aspirational students at

the College, including:

● Specialist university talks and careers events

● Subject masterclasses

● Expert support with university applications through the Aspire and Oxbridge Co-Ordinators

● Support with national competitions such as essay, public speaking and STEM competitions

● Mastering skills workshops in communication, collaboration and creativity

Applicants who have a GCSE profile of Grade 8s and 9s can apply for a four A level pathway at The Henley College. However, it is worth bearing in mind that competitive universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), still expect offer-holders to achieve top grades (A/A*) in three A level subjects although a similar grade in a fourth A Level subject, particularly in a contrasting subject-area, can demonstrate commendable academic breadth. Another option for our Aspire eligible applicants, to support their three A Level subjects, is to gain an extra AS qualification in their first year (the EPQ). If you have any questions regarding a four A level pathway or the EPQ, please contact Eleanor Witcher, the Aspire Co-Ordinator: aspire@henleycol.ac.uk

“I teach A level English, deliver the Extended Project Qualification and co-ordinate the College’s Aspire programme. As a former Henley College student who went on to achieve a First Class degree, I am passionate about helping students access ambitious futures, no matter their background. I work with Aspire students to set their goals and collaborate with the wider Aspire team (Oxbridge Co-Ordinator, careers and PPD tutors) to help bring these ambitions to fruition. I enjoy working with colleagues, universities, and local and national partners to provide events, mentoring and guidance for our high-achieving students.”

Jack Seymour Student Profile

Jack achieved A*A*A*A* in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Computer Science.

“Henley College supported me in achieving A*s in all four of my subjects, and I am thrilled that this will enable me to now go on to study Computer Science at Cambridge University. Jon Lagden was very supportive and flexible in allowing me to sit Maths a year early, and I really appreciated Andrea’s preparation support for the admissions test, and Joanna’s support with my Personal Statement and application.”

Jack was part of our Aspire Programme, he will go to Cambridge University to study Computer Science.

Dr Joanna Atkinson Oxbridge Support

“For the past fifteen years, in my role as designated Oxbridge Co-ordinator, I’ve prepared students for application to Russell Group universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. I’ve developed a comprehensive programme offering information and support throughout the two years of students’ college courses including: monthly bulletins (advertising such outreach activities as subject masterclasses, college/ departmental open days, residential courses, competitions), and regular email contact with individual students and their parents. Specific support is provided during the actual application process, refining of the crucial Personal Statement, co-ordination of the subject-tutors’ reports into the main UCAS academic reference, preparation for the tests and written work which many subjects at Oxford and Cambridge now require before applicants are short-listed for interview, and focus on the interview itself. We’re very proud of our Oxbridge Programme and hope those new students interested in finding out more about what’s involved with making an Oxbridge application will take advantage of all we have to offer when they start their course at The Henley College!”

THE BEST WAY FOR YOU TO LEARN

Whether you already have a clear idea of your desired field or need guidance to find the right course, The Henley College is here to help you discover the programme that aligns with your learning style and career goals. We offer a diverse range of A Level, vocational, and T Level programmes across various subjects.

If you excel in a theoretical, exam-based environment and aim for degree-level study, A Levels might be the right choice for you. These rigorous courses are well-suited for students who thrive in academic settings.

For those who prefer a hands-on approach linked closely to industry practices, our vocational qualifications provide an excellent alternative. Level 3 vocational courses, including the Extended Diploma, are equivalent to three A Levels and offer a practical pathway to university or the workforce.

In addition, T Levels are a valuable option for those looking to combine classroom learning with industry experience. These two-year technical courses are designed in collaboration with employers to equip you with industryspecific skills and knowledge, preparing you for skilled employment or further education.

Disclaimer:

Alongside your studies, you can also choose to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This highly regarded qualification involves in-depth research on a topic of your choice and helps develop transferable skills such as planning, analysis, and evaluation.

EPQ (EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION)

Alongside your studies, you an also choose to undertake an EPQ. This is a standalone qualification that allows students to explore a topic of their choice in-depth. It is typically taken alongside A levels or other Level 3 qualifications and is equivalent to half an A level in terms of UCAS points. The EPQ encourages independent research, critical thinking, and project management skills, making it a valuable addition to a student's academic profile and is highly regarded by universities.

As the Department for Education (DofE) continues to review the Level 3 programmes available in 2026, our courses may be updated to reflect the latest guidelines. We are dedicated to offering the best opportunities for our students, so please check our website regularly for the most up-to-date course information and availability.

APPLIED 'A LEVELS'

Applied A Levels are gaining national popularity and are now offered by various exam boards under names like Extended Certificates. They provide a different assessment model compared to traditional A Levels, balancing both coursework and exams. Structurally similar to diplomas but equivalent to a single A Level, these courses integrate into an A Level programme or can be pursued as a standalone full programme alongside other A Levels. Developed in collaboration with universities, Applied A Levels offer a strong foundation for progression into higher education, including Russell Group institutions. However, some universities may require these qualifications to be paired with at least two traditional A Levels.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE

A LEVELS

A Levels are rigorous two-year academic courses with a strong focus on theoretical content. Typically assessed through examinations at the end of the course – either written or, in some cases, practical exams such as those in Art – A Levels are widely recognised for their academic excellence. They hold a prestigious international reputation and remain the primary pathway for students aiming to pursue traditional university degrees.

VOCATIONAL COURSES

Vocational courses typically involve fewer exams, with some potentially featuring external assessments. Instead, they focus on coursework, blending practical experience with theoretical knowledge. Level 1 and Level 2 courses are completed in one year, and progression to the next level is generally available. Level 3 vocational courses are equivalent to AS and A Levels, offering a range of pathways for further education or career opportunities. Many students who complete vocational courses advance to prestigious universities, while others enter the workforce and pursue further study through degree programmes or higher-level apprenticeships.

Working together with friends and classmates on different challenges really helped me grow and brought us all closer as a group.”

Madina joined us from Windsor Girls’ School and is now off to Cardiff Metropolitan University to study Criminology.

SUBJECT COMBINATIONS

Students choose their A Levels for various reasons: they may have a passion for the subjects, a particular interest in a field, or a belief that certain subjects will keep their options open. However, it’s also important to consider how these subjects will support your future goals. With this in mind, selecting at least two subjects that complement each other can be highly beneficial. Such a combination not only makes your studies more cohesive but also enhances your prospects for university, apprenticeships, or employment by providing a strong, interconnected foundation.

Oliver Short Student Profile

Oliver Short achieved A*A*BB at A Level in Maths, Environmental Science, Physics, Computer science and received a 2025 Education Award.

“My teachers allowed me to express my creativity in the way that I wanted, while developing my skills and techniques.”
“In English Literature there aren’t particularly right or wrong answers, as long as you justify your views adequately. This means that you can really bring in your own ideas throughout the course.”

LANGUAGES

By immersing yourself in the richness of language, culture, and communication, you may not even realise you’re developing key skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. These skills can take you a long way. Communication is at the heart of modern life, and understanding the nuances of language is a key that can unlock doors in life, business, travel, or any career path.

Our students enjoy challenging reading and engaging in discussions and debates about ideas expressed in language, whether written or spoken. Our teachers are passionate about their subjects and are committed to helping you enjoy your experience here and succeed.

A Level courses in English Language are quite different from GCSEs. You will actively engage with everyday language and understand how it works. You’ll explore why people speak differently, how men and women use language, and how to use language effectively to communicate.

In A Level English Literature, you’ll look beyond the characters and plot of books to think

critically about how the author made their choices, as well as the social context of the work. Studying Shakespeare, for example, can involve examining Tudor politics and lifestyles as much as the Bard himself.

Students of French, German, or Spanish will be taught by native speakers and have opportunities to travel and participate in exchanges. The foreign language skills you gain will be in demand by future employers and will also prepare you for further study of these subjects at university level. A recent study showed that employees who use a foreign language in their work earn, on average, eight per cent more than their colleagues.
