1987

THE HENLEY COLLEGE TIMELINE 1609 In parallel with the development of the free grammar school, the Dame Elizabeth Periam’s Charity School was founded, catering for 20 poor boys of the town undertaking an apprenticeship.

1604 A free grammar school was founded, in accordance with the wishes above by James I, for the “education, institution and instruction of children and youth in grammar and other good learning”.

1602 Augustus Knapp left £200 in his will with the express aim of founding a free grammar for “the instruction of youthful people” within two years of his death.

8

1778 The foundation of The United Charity School brought together the free grammar school and Dame Periam’s Charity School – operating as two distinct centres of teaching and instruction within the town.

1873 The School of Science and Art and Technical Instruction, known as ‘The Institute’ was founded in the town of Henley and was based in Hart Street.

1892 The Henley Grammar School was formed, bringing together Dame Elizabeth Periam’s School and the free grammar school.

The merger between King James’s College (based at the current Rotherfield site) and the South Oxfordshire Technical College (based at the Deanfield site) took place, giving birth to The Henley College as we know it today.

1976 Following the cessation of younger pupils being admitted from 1974, the transition from Henley Grammar School to Sixth Form College, known as King James’s College, was completed.

1959 The Institute moved to new premises on Gravel Hill – now known as Deanfield Campus – and was renamed the South Oxfordshire Technical College.

1928 The Henley Grammar School moved to Rotherfield Court, as a County High School and widened its admissions to include girls.

1994 The Henley College became incorporated as an independent body and out of direct control of the Local Authority by virtue of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.

2010 The Henley College became the first college in the UK to be granted a change in status from a further education college to a designated sixth form college.

2017 The Henley College came number 6 in the National Centre for Diversity’s Top 100 index, recognising the best organisations in relation to fairness, respect, equality, diversity, inclusion and engagement.

2020 The Cuthbert Suite was opened to provide a digital working space for students on the Deanfield Campus, and the Art department was completely refurbished to create a Creative Arts Hub on the Rotherfield Campus.

In September, induction is carefully planned to ensure each student has everything they need to settle happily into the college environment. I also monitor and track the individual progress of the students in my group and ensure that they have the support to enable them to maximise their potential. I encourage them to be independent and resilient but at the same time understand that each of the students has their own specific needs. I enjoy helping the students to succeed and become confident, independent young adults ready for the next stage of their lives.”

TUTORIAL SYSTEM The College has a system of tutorials to benefit every student. These structured sessions in both small and large groups are designed to help students prepare for the challenges ahead. This may range from support to navigating UCAS to community projects that will help students build their CVs. The tutors also work with our students to tackle issues as they arise and encourage them to discuss and debate the challenges that face them. This could be anything from applying for part-time work through to handling finances and dealing with difficult situations.

EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELD The College has been delighted to receive support from some eminent and high profile professionals. Professor Mary Beard highlighted the College's commitment to providing a wide and varied range of subjects: “It is increasingly rare for both Classics and Ancient History to be offered at A Level in the state sector. The Henley College is to be congratulated on offering such an unusually wide range of subjects. It is refreshing that, in a climate where the education system seems to be increasingly geared towards science and technology, Henley is determined to continue to promote the arts. The culture and art of the ancient world have inspired great works of art and literature, and fascinated generations of students.”

TV presenter and Naturalist Steve Backshall, who lives locally, has praised the College for offering Environmental Science. Steve said “Ecologists, biologists, conservationists and naturalists are now vital in the corridors of power. Behind every businessperson and politician, is an environmental scientist showing them the way, or fighting them tooth and nail. Many of the people I respect the most are environmental scientists; not afraid to recognise and take on the problems of our planet. Quit being part of the problem, be a part of the solution. If I had my time again, I'd study Environmental Science.” The College is delighted that Natalie Haynes has become Patron of our Classics and Ancient History department. Find out more about our Classics and Ancient History A levels on page 34.

Natalie Haynes Patron

Natalie Haynes, classicist, writer and broadcaster has shown her support for The Henley College by becoming patron of their Classics and Ancient History department. Natalie, who makes regular appearances on TV and Radio 4, in particular on her own comedy show, Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, and who has just published her new novel, A Thousand Ships, said: “When the college asked me if I would stand up for their Classics, and become their patron, I was delighted. I think it is great that Henley, a state-funded sixth form college, offers A Levels in both Classics and Ancient History. It’s not easy in the state-sector these days and these subjects are often the first to go.” Natalie Haynes visited The Henley College in July 2019 and gave an enthralling and entertaining talk about the Trojan War focusing on Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, intercut with references to a myriad of other classical texts, peppered with modern cultural comparisons.

15

BUSINESS AND EMPLOYER LINKS As part of your course, you will have the opportunity to work with specialists in your subject area through the College’s extensive links with employers. You will see how the subjects you take can lead to careers in the world of work, either through the College’s work placements programme, visits to employers or by attending talks. Each subject area has links with employers, both local and further afield. The college is celebrating new partnerships with global technology companies Cisco and Softcat, specialising in IT networks, applications and cyber-security. Other notable examples are Volvo, BMW (Engineering) and Leander and Henley Rowing Clubs, the Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club, Reading Rockets Basketball and Henley FC for Sport. Other partnerships include hospitals and medical care facilities, the armed forces and emergency services, theatres and media companies, as well as local newspapers and publishing companies, where students taking humanities subjects have the opportunity to find out how stories produced for public consumption are written up, edited and published.

16

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS At Henley we understand the importance of developing and nurturing employability skills in our students to prepare them for their future careers. Research shows that in addition to formal qualifications, employers actively seek a specific range of skills in potential employees that will help them to succeed in their chosen field. This includes teamwork, problem solving, leadership, organisation, communication and presentation skills, as well as motivation, resilience, initiative and enterprise.

Rhiannon

Student Profile Rhiannon secured a highly sought-after degree apprenticeship with Cisco. “In July I will start on a degree apprenticeship with Cisco, studying a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions as well as gaining other professional qualifications. Whilst at The Henley College I thoroughly enjoyed all my courses. My teachers were all incredibly supportive during my two years at the college and I know that I will keep in contact with them in the future. Before I even started at The Henley College I had wanted to achieve an apprenticeship with Cisco after having a tour of their Feltham office in year 10, doing work experience there in year 11 and then again in year 13, so I am extremely proud of myself for achieving my goal. The application process itself was very enjoyable too, so I recommend to other people thinking of what to do next year to apply for an apprenticeship. Even if you do not get the apprenticeship the experience is invaluable.” Rhiannon came to The Henley College from UTC Reading and studied A levels in Economics, Politics and English Language and Literature, as well as an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS Industry placements are a valuable opportunity to put your learning into practice and develop technical skills relevant to your vocational course. They will enable you to finish your programme of study with the skills, knowledge and expertise that employers are seeking. At Henley, we have relationships with a broad range of employers and we’ll help you in finding the right placement. We then visit our students in the workplace to support and monitor their progress. When looking for a placement, the main thing is to keep an open mind. You might have your heart set on working for a particular company, but it’s equally important to land the right role that will offer the best experience. We have a dedicated Industrial Placement Coordinator who is available to give advice and guidance to students following this route.

THEHENLEYCOLLEGE

@HENLEYCOL

Industrial Placement Coordinator

T LEVELS In September 2022 we will be offering a brand new qualification, T Levels. T Levels are high-quality technical courses, designed with employers, to give young people the skills that industries need, and for them to thrive in the workplace. They are two-year courses, equivalent to 3 A Levels, that can be studied following GCSEs. T Levels focus on vocational skills providing technical knowledge and practical skills specific to a learner’s chosen industry or occupation. 80% of the course is study time in college, gaining industry specific skills and knowledge. 20% is on industrial placement, putting into practice the knowledge and technical skills learnt in the classroom. On completion, students receive a nationally recognised qualification and will be prepared for their future progression routes, that include skilled employment, higher level apprenticeships or higher education.

THEHENLEYCOLLEGE

June Hogan

THEHENLEYCOLLEGE

June Hogan is the college’s Industrial Placement Coordinator, responsible for setting up a programme of work placements for students and then monitoring their progress. June spends time meeting with students, supporting them through the placement process, and helping them to develop employability skills while they are working for their employer. Her commitment to the placement scheme has resulted in an incredibly high retention rate for students with more than three quarters remaining on the scheme. June’s hard work and dedication was recently recognised with a nomination for a Sixth Form College Association (SFCA) Award for Enrichment and Employability. June was nominated for the award by her colleagues for her tremendous commitment to the development of the Industrial Placement programme for students. June said: “I am so passionate about the work that I do in developing employer relationships with organisations such as Cisco and Softcat. I am incredibly grateful for the nomination and look forward to seeing the impact these initiatives have on our students’ employability and their careers beyond The Henley College”.

The best thing about studying at The Henley College was the close relationship I had with my teachers, who were always helping me push myself and stay focused on my goals. Their passion for their subjects has always inspired me to be a better student. They always supported me, even when I asked a thousand questions, and would teach lessons in a way that always kept me interested and inquisitive.” Molly came to The Henley College from The Embrook School in Wokingham.

THE BEST WAY FOR YOU TO LEARN You may already know the area of study you wish to pursue, but we can help you find the course that meets your individual learning needs and will allow you to flourish. At The Henley College we offer a wide range of A Level and vocational programmes across many different subjects. At school, you will have developed a good idea of the kind of learning that suits you best. Some students thrive in a highly academic environment with an emphasis on theory and largely exam-based assessment; others do much better in a more practical environment where the learning is more closely linked to industry and assessment is based more on project work.

Applied A levels are growing in popularity nationally and are now being offered by a number of exam boards. They offer a different assessment model to conventional A Levels as they are a balance of both coursework and exams. Exams boards give them various different names, such as Extended Certificates, but it is simplest to think them as applied versions of A Levels. These courses are structured like diplomas but are the same size as a single A Level and work within an A Level programme. They are usually studied in combination with A Levels but you can study three Applied A Levels as a full programme on its own.

If you are expecting to do well in your GCSE examinations and know that you want to progress to degree level study at 18, then A Levels may suit you. If you prefer to learn through practical project work, you may want to consider a vocational qualification at Level 3. A full Extended Diploma, taken over two years, is the equivalent of 3 A Levels. These qualifications can provide an alternative route to university.

APPLIED A LEVELS

Alongside either A Level or vocational programmes, you can choose to undertake the Extended Project, a distinctive and highly regarded qualification involving detailed research on a topic of your choice. It develops a range of transferable skills including planning, analysis and evaluation.

These qualifications have all been developed in conjunction with universities and provide a platform for progress into higher education. This includes Russell Group universities but some of these, such as Bristol for example, stipulate that they should be accompanied by at least one conventional A Level.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE A LEVELS

VOCATIONAL COURSES

SUBJECT COMBINATIONS

A Levels are academic two year courses with a high level of theoretical content. They are usually assessed by examinations at the end of the course – either written, or possibly a supervised practical exam, for example in Art. A Levels have a renowned international reputation and are still the primary route for most traditional university applicants.

Vocational courses generally involve fewer, if any, exams, however there may be an element of external assessment. They focus on coursework, and give a balance of practical work and theory. Level 1 and Level 2 courses take one year and you can usually progress from these on to the next level. At Level 3 they are equivalent to AS and A Levels and prepare you for a range of options. Many of our vocational students go on to prestigious universities, while others enter the world of work and then do further study for degree or higher level apprenticeships.

Students select the A Levels they study for a variety of different reasons: they enjoy the subjects, have taken an interest in an area, or feel they ‘ought’ to do a particular subject to keep their options open. It is also, however, worth thinking about how these subjects will help you progress when you leave College. With this in mind, it is a good idea to consider having at least two subjects that go together. This will help you study because the subjects will support each other and they will also help you to progress to university, apprenticeships or into employment.

HUMANITIES If you are curious about the world around you and how humans have made their mark on it, you may find yourself drawn to Humanities. Although the associated subjects are diverse and reflect the differing interests of our students, they actually have a lot in common. They all look at various aspects of our world and people’s roles within it. As well as being fascinating and rewarding to study, Humanities subjects are a fantastic way to prepare yourself for university and beyond, as you will learn transferable skills and acquire a knowledge and outlook on the world that will help you in any chosen career path. Humanities will teach you to think clearly and rigorously and you will gain the ability to write lucidly and present ideas rationally. These skills are essential in professions such as law, advertising, politics and journalism.

The information technology sector, accountancy, the sciences and management consultancies, are all enthusiastic about people who have studied Humanities because they know how to think coherently and excel in verbal and writing skills tests and logical reasoning. There are many possible career paths for those with an Art qualification. Creative skills are in great demand with some of the biggest professional opportunities available here in the Thames Valley. Students can progress to fashion design, fine art, graphics, fashion marketing, costume design, textiles and textile design. Many continue to study Art Foundation and we have a good record of students being offered places at Central Saint Martins. Our students have also gone on to work in many diverse and exciting areas including teaching, architecture, interior design, accessory design, costume interpretation and commercial art.

Sam

Student Profile

PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is an ideal subject for students wishing to pursue a path to media, the arts and Photographic related areas. It is also a good supplementary course giving breadth to your offer. If you are either new to photography, or wanting to improve your creative and technical skillset, you may want to consider this subject option. You will have the opportunity to learn both traditional and contemporary techniques, acquiring the industry skills required for a future career in this field. The photography department boasts a fully equipped darkroom and two photo studios that enables students to develop many transferable skills that can be applied in various career progressions. Past students have progressed to academic or vocational degrees including photography, photo journalism, fine art, fashion photography, the film industry and forensic science as well as more academic subjects such as Psychology and English when matched with other relevant subjects.

“I have a lot of good memories of the fantastic tutors I had whilst at Henley, which really made it a great experience for me, also the workshops and trips organised for our Textiles class. I always looked forward to our lessons where we would often learn something entirely new. Some skills I have expanded and with others it was a chance to do something completely different - like screen painting or batik. I have since graduated from UAL Wimbledon with a First Class Honours degree in Costume Interpretation. I am now working as a freelancer with a company that makes costumes for various theatre, film and TV shows like Doctor Who and Joseph and the Technicoloured Dreamcoat.” Sam studied A Levels in Geology, Textiles, History and Geography at The Henley College.

LANGUAGES Immersing yourself in the richness of language, culture and communication, you may not even be aware you’re actually developing key skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing. In A Level English Literature, you’ll search beyond the characters and plot of books and think critically about how the author made their choices, as well as the social context of the work. Studying Shakespeare can be as much about Tudor politics and lifestyles as it is about the Bard himself.

These skills can take you a long way. Communication is at the heart of modern life, and to understand the nuances of language is a key that can unlock doors in life, business, travel or on any career path. Our students enjoy challenging reading and like to discuss and debate ideas expressed in language, whether written or spoken. Our teachers are passionate about what they teach and want you to enjoy your experience here and to succeed.

Students of French, German or Spanish will be taught by native speakers and have the chance to travel and may participate in exchanges. The foreign language skills you gain will be in demand by future employers, as well as equip you for future study of the subjects at university level.

A Level courses in English Language are nothing like GCSEs. You will actively engage with everyday language and understand how it works. You’ll find out why people speak differently, how men and women use language, and how to use language to be a great communicator.

Did you know... ●

German has had a 100% pass rate since 2003. The Henley College will be one of the few sixth forms offering A Level German and students coming here can study any combination of the three MFL subjects on offer.

Olivia

Student Profile Olivia studied Biology, French and Psychology A Levels and achieved 3 As. “I loved the independence of being a student at the College and the friendly and calm atmosphere. The teachers were a really important reason as to why I enjoyed my courses. They were really supportive and very passionate about their subjects. It was easy to talk to them and ask for help whenever I needed it. With French A Level, there were many opportunities to go on college trips, for example we attended a seminar in Oxford by the director of the French film we were studying. The college has definitely supported me with my studies.” Olivia joined us from Gillotts School, Henley, and is taking a gap year before going on to study Biology at university.

GLOBAL OUTLOOK As well as participating in Enrichment at College, each year Henley students enhance their studies with a wide range of educational trips and visits. These opportunities vary from subject to subject, but most offer the chance to travel nationally or internationally to specially chosen destinations that will add a new, global dimension to their learning. These trips enable students to be challenged and inspired, taste different cultures and develop themselves both academically and personally. These hugely significant and unforgettable experiences also benefit students in their future plans as they apply to university or employment as they will be able to demonstrate their wider knowledge and understanding of the world. Before 2020, our students visited exciting international destinations such as New York, Washington, Paris, Berlin, Iceland, and Sicily. There are also many trips within the UK, such as Brecon Beacons, Christchurch, Studland, Warner Bros. Harry Potter tour and London, to name a few. We very much hope that these opportunities will be available to our students again very soon, once the current safety restrictions allow.

Steph

Student Profile Steph is studying Business Extended Diploma Level 3. Steph has had a profound and wide-reaching impact on the college community. As the college EDI (Equality Diversity Inclusion) officer, Steph has strived to make The Henley College an environment where every student regardless of gender, race or religion feels that they are important and that their voices are heard on all levels. Steph has also been an integral part of the EDI events that we hold for our student body. Steph is always looking for new and innovative ways in which to involve a wider number of students and to open up conversation amongst young people raising awareness of issues including, but certainly not limited to, mental health problems, different faiths, students with disabilities, and LGBT+ issues. Steph has worked tirelessly with the college Student Services team and tutors to implement changes that the student body has requested. Most recently Steph was selected from thousands of applicants to partake in Stonewall’s Youth Summit to discuss with 100 like-minded students how they could best tackle LGBT+ inequality amongst young people. In July 2020, Steph’s work was recognised when she received the Education Award for Personal Achievement and one of the first ever Principal’s Awards for outstanding contribution to the college community.

There are numerous public bus routes which also connect Henley to local towns and villages and a railway station, just a short walk from the College. There are regular trains connecting Henley to Reading, Maidenhead, Slough, London and other major routes via Twyford.

If you decide to drive to the College, an offsite car park provides limited car parking for students. A permit is required for this site and available at a very low cost. Students are generally discouraged from driving to College for practical and safety reasons. Unless a student has a disability or access issue, there is strictly no parking available on the College sites and the Rotherfield site should not be accessed by car.
