Spring

Welcome to , and the April issue of Lubbock Magazine Lubbock Magazine has been Lubbock’s LOCAL Magazine for more than a decade, but over the past few years we have all been through challenging times and changes. However, one thing that has remained consistent is Lubbock Magazine. Also consistent is our community’s LOVE for Texas Tech Sports and the pride of Country Livin! Today’s issue blazes a new trial for Lubbock Magazine. Like most businesses, we needed to listen to our readers and clients. As your new publisher, I want to say thank you for your opinions and support. Lubbock Magazine is now powered by Localiq, our local digital marketing solutions brand. While there will certainly be collaborations with The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Lubbock Magazine will focus its efforts on our local community, our events and our local businesses. One of the more exciting changes for Lubbock Magazine is its increased distribution. This increase includes complimentary delivery by mail to additional homes in the area. Those homes can expect to receive a copy monthly moving forward. These are exciting times not just for the magazine, but for the community. We have so much to be proud of, like the brand-new Buddy Holly Centre, and the continued success of Texas Tech University. We look forward to sharing the stories that highlight our great city in editions to come. This issue will be focused on Home and Family, which includes featuring one of the top homes for sale in the city, that is also a working vineyard, as well as highlighting the new UMC Health Children’s Emergency Center. It is our goal to create the best lifestyle magazine for Lubbock, one where our readers can read about local events, community involvement, philanthropy, local business profiles and new businesses opening their doors to our great community. Whether you have been a reader of Lubbock Magazine for more than a decade, or this is the first time, we appreciate your support and we look forward to being your resource for lifestyle and community in our growing Lubbock community. Have a story idea, or want to provide us feedback? I would love to hear from you. Email me at Efow@localiq.com.

“I think it’s the most beautiful property in Lubbock and I’ve seen a bunch,” Property Real Estate Agent Libby Draughton said. Step inside to refill your glass at the winebar and take in the kitchen, which includes a large island, double oven and butler’s pantry. The high-vaulted beam ceilings viewed throughout the home were locally handcrafted by artisans. “The tenants built the house,” Draughton said. “There is state-ofthe-art technology on the property and it has specially designed netting to keep the birds out.” Listed for approximately $1.83 million, the Lubbock residence provides a cinema experience when stepping into the basement to enjoy movies or the next big sports game. The owner’s bedroom suite in the four-bed, three-bath, three-car garage, 4,684 square-foot estate provides stunning views of the vineyard that has won multiple gold medal titles at international wine competitions. are contracted to William-Chris Vineyards, McPherson Cellars and Lost Draw Cellars. Varieties include Mourvèdre, Tempranillo, Tannat, Picpoul, Marsanne and Zinfandel. The seller is willing to assist with the continued success of this vineyard on a lease-back or custom management agreement if the buyer wishes. “What that means is the new owners could basically live there and have the current owner continue to farm the vineyard and they don’t have to lift a finger but would share the profits,” Draughton said. The vineyard name can additionally be changed to the new owner’s name. “The new owner can name it after their child or someone special in their life,” Draughton said. “That’s kind of cool. How many people can say they have a wine named after their family?” When owning a vineyard, expect crews that have worked the vineyard for a decade to visit from the beginning of March through the end of September for three to

Irrigation water is plentiful. Many individuals are drawn to living in wine vineyards because of their deep passion to entertain or be outdoors. Lubbock has been named one of the top places in categories like raising a family, work-life balance, job and growth potential and starting a business. The home is located in the parameters of the No. 1 school district in the city, Frenship Independent School District. SETTING THE SCENE FOR HEALING UMC CHILDREN’S EMERGENCY CENTER CREATES INNOVATIVE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE FOR TOP-TIER CARE by Cara Clark

T

houghts of hospitals and emergency rooms connote visions of sterile surroundings and traumatic circumstances, but the UMC Children’s Emergency Center in Lubbock has reimagined that anxiety-provoking image. When it opened in April 2021, the new facility brought a cutting-edge concept to children’s care at the only Children’s Miracle Network affiliated hospital in the city. “We realized in our ER we needed a separate entrance and separate feel that would make it more comfortable for children,” says Dr. Brian Payne, chief medical officer of UMC Children’s Hospital. “We have separate providers and separate nurses specializing in children’s care. We wanted to streamline the care for children and create a more comforting setting.” Payne initially performed his pediatrics training at UMC before moving away to work in Children’s Emergency for a time. When he returned to UMC five years ago, he proposed an improvement to the already stellar quality of care for children. Payne recommended creating a separate space for kids in crisis situations three years ago, and after due consideration by key players construction kicked off two years ago. “When I came back to work

here, I asked how we can do a more pediatric specific approach for all care,” Payne says. “We wanted to finalize the separation of adult services and children’s services. Since we’ve opened (the Children’s ER), we’ve seen more patients per month than we’ve seen over the previous five years combined.” Payne anticipates the vibrant, beautifully decorated facility, which served approximately 15,000 children in the first year, will grow exponentially in coming years. With the breezy weather conditions in Lubbock, pinwheels and clouds are key decorative elements in the see

colorful spaces designed with children of all ages in mind. Varying shades of sky blue and lime green are punctuated with yellow, red and blue balloons and multi-colored pinwheels. Cumulous clouds roll across walls and ceilings with whimsical cloud animals – a playful duckling here and a cheeky dachshund puppy there – adding cheery elements. “From the entrance to the ER to the time patients are in a room to the time they are receiving care, the environment is engaging, comfortable and not anxiety provoking,” Payne explains. “We have pediatric nurses who know how to give IVs to children. The doctors know how to work with families, and it makes the care more seamless. We have more than 30 different types of providers who care for kids at our hospital, and the ER highlights that. We have burn specialists and endocrinologists who work with children — all of these doctors can come interact with them in this environment that’s less scary.” The facility also draws from robust community support. “We are very blessed to be part of the Children’s Miracle Network,” Payne says. “A lot of

our community gives to CMN hospitals through local businesses like Wal-Mart, Costco, Panda Express. When people give, it helps our hospital get equipment specialized for children. The new ER boasts kid-specific medical equipment from sedation tools sized for children to intubation systems with cameras designed to place tubes. They even have specially designated tools that help remove foreign bodies from child-sized ears.

“This equipment allows us to provide very specialized to care to kids immediately,” Payne says. “We don’t have to send them out. We have a Level 1 trauma center and provide these services for children in a very unique and beautiful setting.” As the primary teaching hospital for Texas Tech, UMC Children’s offers the most advanced see

care and receives transfers from other hospitals in Lubbock that might not be equipped for those needs. The hospital’s reach is regional extending care to children from communities in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. It is the region’s only burn center – the next one is more than four hours away in Dallas or Phoenix. The Children’s Emergency Center has invested in a unique NICU vehicle to accommodate the special needs of children from neo-natal age and up. It has partnered with a helicopter NICU transport group since 1989, but when weather conditions prevent air travel, ground travel may be the only option to provide life-saving care. The colorfully wrapped ambulance represents an investment of more than $400,000 and is armed with the equipment specifically needed in the treatment of newborns. “In Lubbock, we have snow, high winds, rains – the elements can cause delay from care,” Payne says. “The ambulance allows us to pick up when the helicopter can’t fly and guarantee we can reach kids who are most sick and need us the most.” Payne says few people realize 60 percent of children in the area are born at UMC, which has the largest Level 4 NICU in the state. “Our ambulance has to be large enough to accommodate twins – sometimes we need to bring back two babies,” Payne says. “We have ventilators for babies and incubators that are temperature-controlled. Some babies are so small, they fit in the palm of your hand. If the temperature drops even for a just a minute during transport, it can have a negative effect. The Isolet allows us to keep that temperature control so babies have the support they need.” Payne, who grew up in the Fort Worth area, and wife Tawnya, have five children of their own ranging in age from 3 to 17 – a crew who appear with their cousins in a promotional video for the new ER. When his now 5-year-old son had complications after being born, his life was saved in the hospital’s NICU – a testament to the quality of care in the facility and Payne’s trust in the care provided. He says as a physician, he’s always found it deeply rewarding to work with children, who exhibit remarkable resilience. “There are aspects of pediatrics that inspire me,” he says. “These kids will have traumatic things that happen – a health care incident or injury – and suddenly, they will be happy and amazing again. They come to the ER so that we can get them feeling better, and they will be running and playing and happy again. This center is a hidden jewel in the community, and I’m really ecstatic to share that we have invested so much see

into children’s care.” Aaron Davis, chief experience officer of UMC Children’s Hospital, says the children’s hospital is also undergoing a renovation through a capital expansion slated for completion in 2023. “We’re trying to grow the footprint and accessibility of the children’s hospital,” Davis says. “We are in the process of finalizing a freestanding dedicated tower for children that will include labor and delivery, the NICU and children’s care in the East Tower of the hospital. We want to move units and rebrand everything as a kid and teenager friendly environment.” The single destination site for families will continue the colorful theme of clouds and pinwheels to create an upbeat ambiance. Interactive art pieces and nursery rhymes will be interspersed through the spaces. The hospital will host community events from water safety programs in June to back-to-school programs later in the summer and a Trunkor-Treat experience in the fall. “We want it to be warm and comforting as a place of hope,” Davis says. “We want people to realize we are a part of the community, and they can trust our experts from the beginning stages of life.”
