BEST OF TEXOMA
Chef Robert Aranson of Sage Café has been working in the culinary field since he was 12 years old, serving iced tea at Big Al’s Smokehouse BBQ in North Dallas. He quickly became interested in food, especially the catering side of the business. When he graduated high school, he knew it was time to figure out what to do. His father was a lawyer and his sister was headed to law school, but knew there was no way he was going to become a lawyer. He tried a couple of entry culinary classes at El Centro and went in through the Chef Apprenticeship program there, working two years of that at the Infomart. He finished his schooling and graduated through an accelerated culinary program with Johnson and Wales, but credits most of his education to the places he’s worked in Dallas. When he was looking to open a restaurant in Dallas, Aranson found the prices too steep for an entrepreneur. A friend had told him about Kelly Square in Sherman. There was a restaurant for sale inside and he bought the space, moved and has now been calling Texoma home for 25 years. He has worked as food editor for Texoma Living, worked at Kelly Square, later opened up Culinary Creations (which has since closed), went back to Kelly Square, worked at Willowood Ranch, then opened Sage Café in downtown Sherman four years ago. Aranson doesn’t feel he specializes in a type of food (with

the exception of catering), but looking at his menu and kitchen, one can tell his specialty is high-quality food. Where most people would make sandwiches with precut meats and store-bought bacon, he takes it further. Chef Aranson makes his own bacon, bakes his own bread, and smokes his own salmon — everything is made from scratch, from the bottom up. He credits the ability to do his work seamlessly and not cut corners to his loyal and steadfast staff. Sage Café mainly focuses on lunch hour, but hopes to incorporate dinner and a bar in the future, depending on space, and looks to eventually be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
C H E F TJ L A R O S A Chef TJ La Rosa has carried a lifelong love of food. He grew up in an Italian family where his mom spent long afternoons in the kitchen preparing big, homemade meals that were a staple of his childhood. He was born in Boston then moved to California at age nine, and has been exposed to many different food cultures, shaping the way he likes to cook. His first restaurant job was at Alioto’s in Fisherman’s

C H E F TJ L A R O S A Wharf, San Francisco in 1989. Along the way, he has worked with a variety of people. Some taught him things that he knows he definitely doesn’t want to replicate, as well as some who become mentors, sharing with him their philosophy of good food, good service and how to treat people. After moving to Texas in 1998, he met his wife, Heather, who shares a love of good food as well. They used to throw elaborate dinner parties with all of their restaurant friends — he was in charge of execution, while Heather was in charge of planning (and never took it easy on him.) His hardest fight is learning how to roll with changes. He likes structure, knowing what he is walking into and being prepared. This does not come easy in the restaurant business, where you can spend so much time planning only to be thrown a curve ball at the last minute. Chef La Rosa works hard to try to stay up to speed with the food scene. It can be challenging to try and incorporate new trends into some of the classic dishes and techniques that are ingrained in him. Their restaurant, Fulbelli’s, is continental and he doesn’t feel like he has a specific specialty. He enjoys covering the gambit as far as the inspiration behind their dishes — some Italian, Cajun, East Coast, etc. It gives him room to play around with new things. The La Rosa’s love to travel and are always looking at what other chefs are cooking and how they are doing things. With that being said, if you go to their house on a Sunday night, TJ is most likely cooking a big steak.

Inside Try Incubator off Main St. in Denison is a small stall belonging to restaurant concept Francaise Brise, where Chef Tony Bradburn is producing big ideas. Coming from humble beginnings, Bradburn is the oldest of three siblings. Between the ages of nine and ten, he started experimenting in his parents’ kitchen every chance he got. He began his formal career journey at the age of 15, and is now in his 19th year in the industry. Bradburn specializes in French culinary techniques, an art form he loves. For a while he lacked confidence due to not attending a traditional culinary arts school, but quickly realized his lack of self-confidence was equivalent to accepting defeat. He changed his mindset and now believes he can inspire greatness in others and spread love through cuisine. Through his years in the industry, he has learned to be patient and gained a level of understanding with people. In return for becoming a more attentive and well-rounded individual, he has gained great people skills that allow him and his staff to treat every customer to exceptional service, great conversation and extraordinary food.

BEST PLACE TO
For the “Best Place to Grab a Beer,” it’s no surprise that these locations made the top three among voters for this year’s Best of Texoma. All three locations are known to be crowd pleasers, and with specials like these we can see why.
CITY LIMITS City Limits claims its most popular drink is its frozen
margaritas, but they are well-known for their house drink, the “Denny-Rita,” which is served in its very own mug. They also serve $2 mimosas during Sunday lunch. For beers, City Limits keeps Miller Lite and Shiner Bock on tap. Their popular foods are their hand-breaded chicken fried steak, burgers, hand-cut fries and homemade hot

sauce to go along with their chips and queso. They keep it simple and don’t sport any live entertainment other than their “very hardworking employees.”
CELLARMAN’S PUB & BREWERY Cellerman’s Pub and Brewery has been in Sherman for over 21 years. They are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and cite food as a large part of their business. They also boast their very own brewery that brews about 20 different beers and two sodas annually on site. They keep 16 of those beers on tap at a time and rotate seasonal and new brews throughout the year. They also have another set of 16 taps which feature other craft beers and customer favorites. They do not distribute their beers and have no plans to do so, keeping their

brewpub special. They do sell 32 oz and 64 oz growlers to-go for those that want to take their beer home. Their most popular products is their #1 selling beer the Loco Lima, a Mexican style cerveza brewed with New Mexico Hatch chiles that are aged in tequila with fresh lime. ESR (“Extra Special Red”) is their next most popular beer, brewed with their own wood oven toasted malt. Cellar Dweller is another favorite, an oak-aged English old ale. Can’t decide? They do offer flights, which are 5 oz samplers of any of their brews. Cellerman’s has specials for every day of the week. Monday is Brewery Night, where all their brew pints are $3, Tuesday is Pint Night (all pints are $4.50), Wednesday is Bottle Night ($1 off all 12 oz bottles, $2 off all larger bottles), Thursday is $3 mixed well drinks, Friday is $4 frosé and select long necks, Saturday $4 frozen margaritas and Sunday is $2 mimosas and all-day Happy Hour.
Old Iron Post on the Square regularly has live music scheduled and special entertainment tied to events like Mardi Gras and St. Patricks Day parades and festivals in coordination with downtown events. They are avid beer fans and keep 30 beers on tap, with around 20 saved for fan favorites that remain available year-round and the other 10 being seasonal or “just visiting” beers, so there’s always something new to try. They keep lots of variety on hand, from Bud Light, Lone Star and Coors Light to craft beers such as Deep Ellum IPA, Temptress, 903 Sasquatch and even an apple and pear cider. Old Iron Post always has several lo-
cal 903 beers on tap and have done so since 903 first opened, as they are often requested If you have trouble deciding, they also offer beer flights that let customers sample four different beers. As well as carrying over 100 beers, Old Iron Post is also a full service bar with a wide selection of liquors, wines and cocktails. With the yearly craft beer festival happening on the Square, they take comments and requests from the festival for consideration on what to keep in stock.
BEST OF TEXOMA.COM
Old Iron Post Happy Hour is Friday through Sunday from 3 - 6 p.m. with $3 domestic pints, $3 well drinks, $3 margaritas and $4.50 wine. Every Wednesday is Margarita Wednesday, with $2 margaritas, frozen or on the rocks and in flavors such as strawberry, mango, peach and wildberry. They will soon be introducing Thirsty Thursday with wine specials and Hometown Friday featuring local favorites like 903 and Iron Root. Every Sunday they serve brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with $2 mimosas.

They feel the secret to their success is their dedicated employees. They have had the same head cook they started with 35 years ago. Most of their kitchen staff and wait staff have been with them for 15 years or more. BEST OF TEXOMA
“Our family-owned business is blessed to have some of the best employees around,” adds Skiles. La Mesa looks forward to updating their menu and adding some items to their menu to attract new customers. They work hard to continue their consistency and to keep serving the Texoma area. Celebrating Best of Texoma means hanging signs and letting everyone know how much they appreciate Texoma’s business.

In June 1994, Kathleen’s Kitchen opened and gave the Texoma area some of the best lunches they’ve ever seen. Giant salads, award-winning soups, desserts and more fill bellies on the daily, yet their sandwiches game is stacked when it comes to being Best of Texoma’s “Best Sandwiches.” Kathleen’s Kitchen prides itself on continuous, consistent products BEST OF TEXOMA
FOR BEST OF TEXOMA and service. “With that kind of commitment and goal, hard work comes with it and it all begins with me at the top,” says Kathleen Tuggle, owner of Kathleen’s Kitchen. Since the day the kitchen opened, she has been making their own bread and has several people who help her bake the bread. The process is a strict, laborious two-day routine that never
varies on who does what and has been that way for 26 years. “Starters are fed and sit overnight and I make bread early (in the) morning and it’s left to rise,” says Tuggle. “Then in late morning we pan it, and later in the day it’s baked. Check around — we are probably one of few to none anywhere in Texas that makes bread this way in a regular bakery.” Kathleen’s plans to continue making fabulous sandwiches with great homemade bread and delicious fillings. They use the best meats that can be bought, along with making all of their own sandwich salads from scratch. Their two most popular are their chicken salad and smoked turkey salad. When asked how they celebrate winning, Tuggle says, “We celebrate by knowing that hard work produces a wonderful reward of knowing it was a job well done, with an appreciation for our wonderful customers by voting for us year after year.”

WATCH SPORTS BY SHANNON ORR
•
FOR BEST OF TEXOMA
Editor’s note: Buffalo Wild Wings declined an interview.
Old Iron Post likes to offer choices, and when it comes to being one of the top three “Best Places to Watch Sports in Texoma,” that’s what they do. They have eight televisions in their establishment and one on their openair patio, allowing for game parties or solo watching. Usually they have many different sports being broadcast simultaneously, but on special occasions such as the Super Bowl or Cowboys games, they will tune almost all of their TVs to that event, creating a large game day party environment. During Cowboys games they offer $1 Coors Original and Keystone beers as well as their beer flights. Popular eats among sports enthusiast are their bone-in wings, bacon-wrapped wings, quesadillas, cheesesteak sandwiches and burgers. Old Iron Post finds DirectTV carries a variety of sports, giving customers 34
City Limits claims its most popular drink is its frozen margaritas, but they are well-known for their house drink, the Denny-Rita, which is served in its very own mug. They also serve $2 mimosas during Sunday lunch. For beers, City Limits keeps Miller Lite and Shiner Bock on tap. Their popular foods are their hand-breaded chicken fried steak, burgers, hand-cut fries and homemade hot sauce to go along with their chips and queso. They keep it simple and don’t sport any live entertainment other than their “very hardworking employees.” They have several TVs and always have the most popular sports on for the day. If a customer requests a certain game and they have access to it, they will almost always put it on for them.

many options for what to watch and a broad perspective in the sports world. College and professional sports, big games, tournaments and single events are all part of the line-up. As much as possible, they will honor customer preferences because they know everyone wants to see their team as often as possible. They love hosting Rangers baseball games on the patio, especially for those who can’t make it to opening day. Cowboys games, the Super Bowl, other big NFL games and college games draw crowds from both

sides, including families and groups of friends who want to watch together. Their TVs are always on. Old Iron Post staff also has their own favorite teams and enjoy the atmosphere created when people are enjoying a game. Staff tries to fulfill a customer’s preference for games being broadcast if they are able. Offering great drinks, good food, and possibly a friendly argument with your server or bartender if you’re pulling for the wrong team, they like sports and invite you to come watch with them.

BOWLING ALLEY + FAMILY ACTIVITY SCHULMAN’S Schulman’s Movie Bowl & Grille is best known for their all-in-one family fun atmosphere, giving people of every age a place to spend quality time with their loved ones. They faced almost complete facility shutdown, surviving with business only from their restaurant, Billy’s Grille and Bar, when COVID-19 hit. Their biggest takeaway from 2020 is that with a hard working team and a supportive community committed to helping small businesses succeed, they can persevere through any hardship. According to Schulman’s, “being a Best of Texoma finalist means a great deal to us as new members of this community. They also host trivia and other games every week and live music monthly. They welcome everyone, from families and friends to church groups and corporate groups. With so many group activities at HeyDay, COVID-19 was not in the plan. Their top priority is the health and safety of their guests, team members, and the people of Texoma. Initially, the biggest challenge they faced was making the decision to temporarily close their doors. They have now implemented policies throughout their facility in accordance with state, local and CDC regulations, and additional precautions for the well-being of every guest who comes through their doors including enhanced cleaning

Casinos have suffered a great loss in 2020. With the need to social distance as well as the strain on public health, casinos and hotels have had a hard time keeping patrons at their locations. At the beginning of September, it was announced that MGM casinos would be laying off 18,000 people, and Kansas casinos lost more than $20 million in 2020. Area casinos remained closed for two months this year. The MegaStar Casino in Kingston, Oklahoma is one of the newest Chicka-

From its inception in 2003, WinStar has evolved to boast resort-style features including two 18-hole championship golf courses, a 3,500-seat Global Event Center, 65,000-square-foot convention center and the nearly 1,400room hotel. Choctaw Nation has two other casino resorts in Oklahoma and has casino-only operations in McAlester, Oklahom, Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Idabel, Oklahoma, and Stringtown, Oklahoma. “We recently added more food venues, expanded the pool and the retail areas,” Choctaw Nation Public Relations Manager Kristina Humenesky said in 2019. “We’re expanding again in Durant. We will be breaking ground this spring to add another tower, pools, and the retail shops.”

OUTDOOR CONCERT SERIES HOT SUMMER NIGHTS Sherman Tourism and Main Street is best known for Hot Summer Nights, Lights on the Lake, Arts Fest, and the Sherman Christmas Parade. They seem themselves as essential an “industry” as any, because people need positive diversions now more than ever. It is their department’s job in the City of Sherman to provide just that. Michelle Adams, Sherman’s Tourism and Events Specialist, has found that planning events for the city during COVID-19 has been trying. “Events planning in the midst of a pandemic is difficult and full of uncertainty, but bringing light to peoples’ lives in dark days makes it all worth it,” Adams said. “To be nominated for Best of Texoma is exciting. Sherman Tourism and Main Street loves being able to bring the 39th Annual Arts Fest to the community in the chaos that is 2020 and we
love that people enjoy the sweet, family-friendly festival.” Trying to find ways to bring the community joy through events while keeping people safe has been a challenge. With a divided community, the pressure of people wanting to resume normal living and activities, while also understanding that many people feel strongly about staying in, hasn’t been a cakewalk. However, Sherman Tourism and Main Street have found it rewarding to see how much people are enjoying being able to get out again, even with modifications such as wearing face masks and social distancing. “Experience our beautiful, historic downtown while supporting small businesses. Enjoy our parks and entertainment districts, stay in our hotels, and get a taste of the local life in this sweet community of Sherman,” Adams added.

adjusting programs to fit within the scope of current operational guidelines. For example, creating unique programs and activities that minimized large crowds and promoted social distancing. Their parks feature space for residents to enjoy outdoor physical activity, as well as sports and games in order to promote the overall health and wellness of the community. “Denison Parks and Recreation provides the community with safe, attractive facilities and parks, and enriching programming,” said Andrew Means, Recreation Program Manager with the City of Denison Parks and Recreation. “It is an honor to have our city and regional parks considered the ‘Best of Texoma.’ Our parks are a representation of the passions, interest and partnerships within our community.”

The Sherman Jazz Museum works for the preservation of and education about the great American musical art form of jazz. Located in one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, they’ve had to work hard to fight the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including bringing in out-of-town visitors who might be from hot spots. Bill Collins, founder and owner of the Sherman Jazz Museum, feels the museum will become more important than ever because of the devastation to musical artists who cannot work during this time, many of whom may be forced to work in other fields. CBD PRODUCTS BY FUTURE BROWN The world of CBD has gained traction in the Texoma region, with establishments like Texoma CBD American Shaman, Nourish Med Spa and Wellness Center, and CBD American Shaman of Denison pushing their way to the forefront as sellers of cannabis oil. Though marijuana has been decriminalized in many areas around the state, cannabis that contains more than .3 percent Delta-9 THC is still illegal and cannot be sold. The CBD sold in area stores, smoke shops and other retailers is made from industrial hemp and contains little or no THC, the active drug found in marijuana. According to HealthLine, the oil is used to treat many health ailments including relieving pain related to multiple sclerosis and arthritis. It can help reduce anxiety and depression, alleviate cancer-related symptoms, reduce acne and help with heart-related issues. “We are essential to the health and wellness of our community,” CBD Texoma American Shaman owner Julie Jones said. “We chose Texoma because we wanted to be able to make a difference where it was needed. During the hardest times for everyone we were able to be there for them.” Jones went on to say that not all CBD products are created equal and that consumers should be looking 70

for the strongest and most bio-available products on the market. By visiting area CBD retailers, consumers can learn more about the products. For treatment of medical issues, see a doctor. Like other businesses, Jones has also had to deal with the effects of declining business due to social distancing requirements this year. “When adversity happens— and it will absolutely happen, as we’ve all seen this year— it’s important to think, ‘What is this teaching me?’ instead of ‘Why is this happening to me?’” Carter said. “When you do that, it takes you from a passive, helpless state to a growth mindset, and your response then comes from a place of strength instead of weakness.” While Nourish Med Spa sells CBD oil, the most popular services at the establishment include lip filler, anti-wrinkle treatments, weight loss and facials. Clients love the results, as well as the friendly, supportive vibe at the office. “Having a good relationship with the people who come through our door is our biggest measure of success, so it’s thrilling being voted into the Best of Texoma finals because it’s a solid indication we’ve made a genuine and positive connection with our clients and community,” said Jason Carter of Nourish Med Spa.

A lot of local businesses get to shine during Small Business Saturdays. During these shopping holidays, downtown businesses often partner with the city or Downtown Sherman Now for sales and promotions. The idea is that patrons can make sure they are spending their money at locals that are sure to invest that money back into the community. With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, downtown businesses are gearing up for more customers. In 2019, Glitzy Girlz Boutique employee Holley Murphy said they had good foot traffic the day after Christmas, with a lot of customers cashing in their “Glitzy Girl Bucks” they can get from shopping from December to the end of the year. “Historically it is not just us, but any retail store between November and December is huge,” Murphy said. “We are lucky in that we have a pretty steady traffic flow year round. We do a good job keeping cute items in stock that are affordable for every-

one. We change real well with the seasons.” Murphy said sweaters were a popular item during the winter season and their upstairs section devoted to plus size clothing was a big hit. “We are busy with holiday shopping but also our regular customers who shop a lot,” she said. “We don’t have a huge amount of returns. Usually, if anything, it is something someone has to exchange the size on, but they want the same item. We haven’t had a lot of people who are displeased with (their purchase). We want everyone to know we’re here to help. When they leave we want them to feel good about themselves.” But clothing retail is not the only popular type of buying downtown. Knight Furnitur has had a presence in Sherman since 1912. “We not only want to sell in the community, but it’s important for us to give back to it as well,” Knight Furniture Vice President Joey Gunn said in 2019. “It’s pretty awesome that you’ll see our logo or our team members
at the Little League games or at the Chamber of Commerce or at the other events in the community. All of that shows that our commitment is deeper than just selling furniture. We hope that is what people are thinking when they nominate us, and for certain, it encourages us to keep doing it.” After the home renovations are complete, locals can also shop for a Texas favorite downtown. Naif Risk, of Risk Boot in Sherman, knows a thing or two about the importance of a detail in a boot. “We do a lot of cowboy boots. They’ve been popular in Texas forever,” Risk said. “The repair part of it is the dying art.” In Sherman, Risk Shoes has been in service in the same downtown location for 96 years and has seen three generations of the same family operate the business. “We have been doing this for so long we all know how each product works and fits,” he said. ”We base a lot of our business on providing that excellent customer service.”

BEST DOWNTOWN BUSINESS IN

Denison Main Street turned 30 in 2019. That does not mean that the area has only been promoting its downtown businesses for 30 years, it means that it officially became a part of the Texas Main Street Association 30 years ago. With the help of local business owners, Main Street in Denison has become a tourist destination for area residents and guests. From local boutiques like Salty Lime Boutique, to food stores like Pop Around the Corner and coffee shops like CJ’s Coffee Cafe, downtown Denison has a little something for everyone. CJ’s owner Nancy Gentry said what keeps her customers coming back could be credited to the freshness of their coffee. While many coffee shops purchase their coffee beans already roasted, CJ’s has a roasterie in-house that it uses to roast the beans after they’ve been shipped. “We don’t buy them roasted already, we buy them and they come straight in from Costa Rica, Guatemala… and we roast our own coffees,” Gentry said in 2018. “It makes it fresh. If you’ve ever had anything fresh it’s always better, and coffee is no different.” Gentry said while many shops focus on sugars, syrups, 76

DENISON whipped creams and drizzles, CJ’s has a more “geeky” approach to its coffee. “We do (have the sugar and drizzles) for people, but we are more along the traditional lines of kind of an ‘Austin-vibe’ coffee shop, where you’re going to come in and get the real deal, not just ‘fast-food coffee,’” Gentry said. Emily Roberts from Pop Around the Corner in Denison, said each day been a great day for her business. “We’ve had tons of customers coming in; we’re glad everyone came in today,” Roberts said in 2019. “Downtown Denison is made up of so many different businesses, customers have been really excited. Its been a lot of fun. We’ve seen tons of people walking up and down the street, showing what they bought at other stores and getting in the Christmas spirit and supporting local shops.” But Roberts did say that one of the busiest days for the popcorn specialty shop is Small Business Saturday, which takes place over the same holiday break as Black Friday. “Families are able to shop together,” Roberts said. “It’s very beneficial to have it following Black Friday. It is absolutely important. We wouldn’t survive without our customers— we’re very fortunate to have a business in Denison.”

They have been located in a rehabbed mid-century gas station in Denison since 2013. “I’m a small town girl and this area is a perfect fit for the lifestyle and culture I have been accustomed to my entire life,” Garrett said. “I like to think I bring a bit of my West Coast vibe to this region and infuse it with my love for the South.”

Robin Garrett, owner of Oopsy Daisy, is a lifelong lover of great shopping, eclectic design, gardening, writing and most of all, good vibes. When the opportunity arose to relocate and expand her store to a year-round indoor/outdoor oasis and create a website, blog and email membership, she jumped at the thought of creating a space that encapsulated all of the above. “I feel honored to be in the running for this award. From what I understand it is prestigious to be included, but my daily customers sharing their experiences here and seeing their joy is what brings me the most

Many people don’t think about replacing their windshield until, well, they need to replace their windshield. However, that doesn’t mean that LGS Windows, Budget Glass, Inc., and Denison Glass don’t stay busy year-round. The top three nominees for Best of Texoma have taken on new considerations as well as done more to make known the changes they’ve made for their customers’ safety. One of the top challenges LGS has dealt with during 2020 was keeping a full schedule and trying to keep their employees working full time. One of the top changes made at Budget Glass dealt with the measures taken to make sure the public knew the company was doing as

much as it could to practice proper sanitation methods. For both companies, these changes have been to ensure customers feel safe about technicians being in their cars and homes. “Broken glass has to be replaced for many reasons, such as security and safety,” said LGS owner Jarrod Merchant. “We replaced numerous pieces of glass for banks, schools and homes that couldn’t operate with glass broken in their doors or high traffic areas without risk of injuring a consumer or the threat of leaving the hole unsecured after hours for many businesses.” Customer service also includes doing these things in a timely manner. “We are an essential industry beBEST OF TEXOMA.COM
cause we make sure that vehicles can safely be on the road,” said Lisa Dickerson of Budget Glass. “We are a family owned business. We grew up in Texoma, raised our family here and have been a part of the community— that quality and consistency will carry you through. You have to be able to adapt and keep going. We truly care about our customers and their satisfaction. We have been in business over 30 years and will be here to stand behind our work.” It is an honor to know the community trusts the company because customer service is their main priority, Merchant said. “That our customers trust us to take care of them (is an honor),” Dickerson said. 87

Muddbones in Bonham is known as one of the best burger locations in the state. After making its television debut on The Texas Bucket List, the burger joint put the small town in Fannin County on the map for people who knew little about the area’s offerings. But Muddbones is not the only business in Fannin County worthy of notoriety. Popular businesses Past and Present Furniture and The Mustard Seed Children’s Boutique have been working to show just what community spirit means to the Fannin County area. Past and Present has been putting out furniture deals since 2003. “At Past & Present Furniture Company, our custom-

From one room to a whole house we can help you bring it all together.” They sell Sealy, Simmons, Ashley, Bassett, Lazboy, Rustic and other brands you might find in a “big city store.” The Mustard Seed Children’s Boutique is a destination for individuals looking to purchase infant clothing as well as children’s apparal. Recently, the store began offering children’s photography on its premises. Information about sales, unique items and community finds can be found on the store’s website.

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, one of the most overlooked necessities is the car wash. As an all-in-onestop maintenance solution, the car wash used to be an amenity that was more prevalent. Now, individuals could opt to clean their vehicles themselves, take them to a professional or pay for a hybrid service where a machine does the washing and the owner or driver does the drying and detailing. Some of the most popular establishments in Texoma include The Wash Factory, Whistle Stop and Lone Star Foods location #50. Each of these facilities aid in the cleanliness and safety of countless personal, fleet and public safety vehicles. To work within COVID guidelines they have enhanced cleaning and sanitation processes, minimizing unnecessary customer contact and ensuring the safety of employees and customers alike. “We are happy to play our part in keeping our Texoma communities safe and clean, while maintaining our focus on excellent wash quality and customer service,” said Wash Factory marketing manager Justin Clary. Here are three things to know about washing your vehicle: Do not use household cleaners. It may seem like a quick job to grab dishwashing liquid or hand soap to get dirt and grime out, but not all chemicals are made the same or serve the same purpose. “These aren’t formulated for use on a car’s paint and may strip off the protective wax,” a report from ConsumerReports.com said. Fight the urge to clean after that Sunday evening drive. Consumer Reports also advises people to not attempt to clean their vehicles when the vehicle is still warm. This means individuals should either clean their car in the morning before it gets too warm or during the evening. Heat can cause water and soap to dry quicker, making the wash not as clean as it could be. Do not wipe in circles. This can create small scratches on the vehicle. Instead, use lengthwise motions. “And don’t continue using a sponge that’s dropped on the ground without thoroughly rinsing it out,” Consumer reports said. “The sponge can pick up dirt particles that can scratch the paint.”

Bailey Nixon, salesperson with Texoma Hyundai, feels the lesson for 2020 is this: “Don’t take life for granted.” After COVID-19 hit, Texoma Hyundai faced a huge financial downward spiral as they watched their business traffic drop almost 65 percent. Nixon has been selling cars for two years and said to be in the top three of the Best of Texoma feels like a blessing. “We provide safe and dependable transportation solutions. vidual. I want to make my customers feel at home. If they have any questions, concerns or need anything, I’m here to help.” She says Texoma Hyundai is best known for their transparency and service before, during, and after the sale. They have the number one service department in the nation out of 800 Hyundai stores. Jonah Peters, salesperson with Bob Utter Ford, echoes the voices of many others, as COVID-19 slowed the car business to a standstill due to limited foot traffic. Peters said Bob Utter Ford is an essential business because people need transportation— from medical professionals and first responders who need to get to their facilities, to everyday people needing to get to the grocery store or pharmacy— especially in a situation like COVID-19.
In this area, vehicles are how they do that. Peters is honored to be nominated for the third year in a row. He said the support from the community speaks volumes to him and is deeply appreciated. “Texoma is a great community of diverse people who come together in times of need,” Peters said. “I love that about my community.” To him, Bob Utter Ford feels like a family owned, customer service business with a “we’ve known each other for years” type of atmosphere. “We are a family up here and I feel that translates to our clients,” Peters said. “I love people, especially helping people, not just in business but in life. I feel community is one of the most important things in life and I’m happy I’m a part of this one.”

DAYCARE
KIDDIE KAMPUS
Kiddie Kampus Childcare Center has been the undefeated “Best Childcare Center” in Texoma since Best of Texoma started. Barbara Lance, a homemaker with two children, and her husband, Gary Lance, an officer for the Denison Police Department, opened Kiddie Kampus in 1974. Being undefeated motivates them to try harder at maintaining being the best. They are very proud and thankful for the recognition. The licensed childcare centers have two locations and each has a capacity of 119 children. They help with children in ages ranging from infant and toddler to pre-K and school age children. They also participate in subsidized childcare programs. “We will continue to provide a safe, nurturing learning environment for the families of our community,” says Holly Harbin, director of Kiddie Kampus 2 in Denison.

FOR BEST OF TEXOMA
(903) 771-0129
Jack Kristian, owner of Platinum Events Company, says his business is best known for providing a premier service in the private events and wedding industry, as well as for their professionalism, customer service and knowledge of the industry. Kristian has been a DJ since he was 13 years old. He started in England, providing mobile DJ services for events such as birthday and anniversary parties. When he turned 18 he began DJing in nightclubs, mostly within the house music scene. He moved to Texoma in 2015 and entered the wedding industry in 2017. Kristian said he loves what he does, and that being a wedding DJ is what he does best. “Being a wedding DJ is a lot different from being a bar or nightclub DJ. It’s personal. When I DJ a clients wedding, it doesn’t matter that it’s my third wedding of the week; what matters is that their wedding is the only one they’ll ever have, so I better make it count,” Kristian said. “I think we have
108
a wonderful reputation within Texoma because every event that I perform at, I make it my goal to make it as personal and as memorable as possible for my clients.” Being a DJ in the wedding and private events industry, Kristian said he definitely took a hit with COVID-19 and social gathering restrictions. He was not able to perform at any events for three months, right when they were entering wedding season. “My biggest takeaway from 2020 is to never take anything for granted. In 2019, I DJ’d almost 70 weddings. 2020 was supposed to be a record year, but like many other businesses, (the year) had other plans for us all and it’s going to take us a while to get back to where we were,” Kristian said. However, he wasn’t one to turn off the music and adapted ingeniously by providing “Quaranstream parties” for the community, online DJ sets on Facebook where anybody could join in, request their favorite songs and have an hour of fun from the safety
BEST OF TEXOMA
of their own homes. The events had amazing feedback, with Kristian feeling like it “really cheered some people up during the pandemic.” “Another one of my takeaways is simple: don’t get comfortable and always be ready to adapt for what life throws your way,” Kristian said. “We adapted by providing ‘Quaranstream’ parties rather than complaining about how unfair that it was that I couldn’t DJ weddings. We have also started to provide virtual/live stream ceremony services for our clients’ guests that are from out of town and can’t travel to the wedding to allow them to still watch the wedding ceremony.” “Living in Texoma is like having an area full of family that supports and helps each other grow. Texoma is a super special place because of the community of people that live here,” Kristian said. “Being a Best of Texoma finalist is really special to me. Since moving to Texoma, it’s been a personal and business goal of mine to win a Best of Texoma award.”

and refrigeration are working properly to keep them, their loved ones and their pets comfortable and safe in their homes or businesses.” An essential business during COVID-19, they are following safety rules, including wearing masks and gloves, sanitizing the office and their trucks, following social distancing orders and taking temperatures to keep everyone safe. As individuals were asked to stay at home, sometimes remaining in their homes for weeks if they were quar-

We are very grateful to those who have voted for us and appreciate the time it took from their busy schedules to think about our business and us,” Reynolds said. “We thank God for each and every customer, friend or employee who has become a part of our lives.”

Carol Kelley, owner of Sugar Plum Stitching in Sherman, says her company’s goal is to provide a great job with a fair price that is completed in a timely manner. During COVID-19, Kelley has fought to keep her business up and running as well as made sure customers felt safe bringing items by her workshop to be embroidered. “I love Sherman. I love my job of embroidery and meeting new people,” Kelley said. “Most of all, my customers are my good friends. It’s a great honor to be nominated.” Laurel Hamrick of Germaine Designs Embroidery has been in business since 1993, offering embroidery services with fair pricing, above standard quality and great customer

impression with a personalized gift. During “Stay Home, Stay Safe” orders, the unreliable and unpredictable income was their hardest challenge. Events were being cancelled, with snowball effects as the months passed, but the government’s Paycheck Protection Program and grant monies helped them get through those slow months. Their biggest takeaway from 2020 is knowing the community supports one another during these trying times. “The most exciting feeling of being a finalist is knowing your customers and the general public recognize your business as having outstanding services and that we’re at the top of their minds when nominating us for Best of Texoma,” Hamrick said.

BEST PET GROOMER BY SHANNON ORR
Big Dog Little Dog is the reigning champion in the “Best Dog Groomer” category for Best of Texoma. The business was originally started in 2000 by John Lamb. After four years of working for Lamb, employee Britney Strickland bought the business when he retired in July 2014. Pregnant with her first child, Strickland learned her baby was diagnosed with Down syndrome. After her daughter was born, she and her husband, Brian, decided it would be best to raise 116
her together and he joined Strickland at the shop, learning to groom and getting to know the customers. Brian always had a kind heart towards dogs, but ended up loving being able to work alongside his wife and the dogs. Since 2017, they have ran Big Dog Little Dog together. “We absolutely love what we do and take much pride in our business,” says Strickland. “(We) have been fortunate to have a wonderful staff now that love animals and care for them like we

do.” The Strickland’s believe that what gives their business a “paws up” above the rest is their relationship with their clients and customers. They are genuinely passionate about the work they do and the love and time they spend with the dogs. The amazing team they work with have made Big Dog Little Dog a family. “Winning Best of Texoma means so much to us. It really makes us feel good to know all our hard work and care we put into others pets
BEST OF TEXOMA
is appropriated,” says Strickland. “When the results come out, we all celebrate by going to the (Best of Texoma) gala. We always have so much fun and are always the last ones partying and dancing the night away.” Big Dog Little Dog is growing fast, and are currently in the middle of purchasing a larger facility to be able to take in more dogs and offer boarding and doggie day care. With what started as something so small, they are very excited for what’s to come.

BY FUTURE BROWN “In my 25 years of owning a dance studio I have never experienced anything like I did this year,” Fierce Motions in Dance studio owner Donna Kramer-Almon said of 2020. “We are a studio dedicated to children.” In the past six months, Kramer not been able to see her little dancers each week as she has in the past. Nor has she been able to help them perfect their moves or help them grow into well-rounded individuals through the discipline needed for dance. Still, in being a top three winner for Best of Texoma 2020, Kramer-Almon said her role in the community means so much. “The parents support and trust me with their children. We become a family,” she said. “It’s more than dance. It’s

helping children grow into wonderful humans.” Along the same road is Kristina’s Studio of Dance. Operating in the area for many years, Kristina’s is a repeat Best of Texoma winner and a community volunteer who often helps with the annual Stockings for Seniors event that produces gift-filled stockings to be presented to individuals at area nursing homes during Christmas. “I just felt like it’s needed and people need to give back and be happy and make somebody else happy this time of the year,” Beeler said in 2018, about her involvement in the community. “I can’t make a difference in the whole world, but I can make a real difference here.” As for Beeler’s award winning troupe, her dancers are repeat winners at national competitions, including eight National Talent Nationals
Competition. Her dancers often go on to win scholarships to continue their growth as dancers. Dance Xplosion has participated in Denison’s annual Christmas parade for the past 12 years, so these young dancers are also no stranger to community service and using their dance skills to make a mark on the community. “This is our big fall performance,” Quate said in 2016, adding that 75 students were involved in the parade. “We like to use this to participate with the community, show off our talents and perform.” Quate and her students start preparing for the parade in October, so 2020 changes could continue to affect how area dancers embark on future seasons of performance, skill-based entertainment and art.

A new event venue in Sherman had barely opened its doors when it was forced to close them again due to social gathering restrictions put in place earlier this year. Still, The Garden is pushing forward and has been rescheduling its April and May events to give people the opportunity to celebrate milestones. “We are a very affordable venue inside the city limits,” owner Allen Martin said. “I don’t know of anything else like our property.” The outdoor garden was the former location of a plant nursery and is located at 810 Frisco Road. Couples can choose to have weddings on the grounds and individuals can host parties and other celebratory events on the small property nestled behind Texoma Parkway. “Heritage Gardens is a beautiful, landscaped, full-serviced wedding and reception facility (that) provides big city elegance at a fraction of the cost,” according to The Knot website’s description of the property, located at 205 W. 3rd St. in Bonham. The ballroom, garden, loft and park can fit up to 250,

but can also be the ideal spot for a small dinner or tea party. Two of the largest event venues in the region, the Hilton Garden Inn in Denison and Heritage Gardens in Bonham, have both worked hard to keep their names relevant in a world where gathering in large groups is still restricted. For those looking to plan ahead for 2021 events or who are taking into consideration the added space need to social distance in 2020, the Hilton Garden Inn is still open. “The technologies of the hotel business are changing,” Manager Regina Rhodes said in 2019. “We are still in the amenities business, but how things are done has changed. We’ve gone to these huge TVs and now people use their cellphones rather than the phone they have in their room. The internet is very important and you have to have Wi-Fi. Many years ago, if you wanted to connect to the outside world, it was plug-in or dial-in, and you had to pay for it. That is usually not the case anymore.”

“2020 has been a challenge to say the least. Shortly into the year we were hit with the pandemic, which is still affecting our community,” he said. “Through this pandemic my biggest takeaway has been how our community has come together in support of our first responders.” Several procedures have changed for the force because of the need to social distance and limit contact with people as much as possible. ing strong, positive relations with the community. Eppler said it has been important to be an example in showing others that we can all adapt to rapidly changing situations and circumstances. “Being a law enforcement officer is a special calling and is much more than just policing,” he said. “We oftentimes interact with people at the lowest point in their lives, so we need to also be prepared and equipped for helping meet their spiritual needs along with other needs.” Gudgel said his work is more than

While protecting the public has always been important in the communities that make up Texoma, 2020 has brought new challenges to those who serve and protect the region. For well-known Denison officers, as well as new Police Chief Mike Gudgel, 2020 has been a year of firsts. Gudgel said officer wellness and safety have been top priorities, and while he was humbled to be nominated for Best Law Enforcement Officer for 2020, he said what makes Denison special is the community he serves.

a job to him. “We provide public safety to the City of Denison. Denison is a special city,” he said. “It has a hometown feel with a rich history. My family is from the Texoma region so getting closer to family while still pursuing my passion for police work has been a blessing.” Texoma nominated three officers with Denison PD for Best of Texoma honors, showing that the region thinks highly of the organization. “The Denison Police Department is know for serving the City of Denison with honor and integrity,” this year’s third top three winner Officer Crystal Arrington said. “I have lived in the Texoma area my entire life, and am
proud to call it my home. Growing up, I watched my stepfather dedicate his life to serving this community as a member of the Denison Fire Department, up until his retirement in 2018. He was and always will be a hero in my eyes as well as in the eyes of many others. I remember hearing stories of all the wonderful things he did to help people he didn’t even know and I was always so proud of him. I knew when I made the decision to start my career in law enforcement I wanted nothing more than to follow in his footsteps and serve the same wonderful community he did.” As the pandemic continues and ongoing changes continue to affect the community, all three officers are BEST OF TEXOMA.COM
ready for the challenge of maintaining public safety, helping set a positive example of community service and being representatives of the region. “I know I am not the only one who will say that 2020 has been one of the most challenging years they’ve had to face,” Arrington said. “My biggest takeaway would be to maintain a positive outlook, no matter how challenging it is. My days have always ended up better when I wake up with a positive attitude and maintained that throughout the day, no matter what challenges I had faced. Not only does being positive benefit you, but also everyone else around you.” 127

Texoma has many nonprofits where people can donate their hard-earned money. During an average year, organizations like 903 Mindful, the Sherman Service League and Women Rock have been able to host their annual events as a means to raise money for their various causes. This year, however, each organization has had to be innovative in their attempts to reach the public for donations as well as to let the public know they have not stopped their mission of helping others. “As the virus took hold across the country it put many out of work,” said Christopher Creed of 903 Mindful. “Our foundation relies mainly on donations that people couldn’t afford anymore. More and more, the costs began coming from our personal accounts.” 903 Mindful is known for feeding

and housing homeless members of the community, but they aren’t the only local group that helps the community with needed services. Women Rock has had to cancel fundraisers and events, resulting in a loss of income for the organization that helps with mammogram screenings and other diagnostic test for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. “Our services are essential due to the disparity of healthcare, the level of poverty in Texoma and the number of minorities and people without insurance in our community. (Loss of income) equals decreased access to healthcare services for many,” said LuAnn Daniel of Women Rock. Due to COVID-19, the organization has had to adapt. Daniel said they are looking at a major budget deficit and are working on ways to decrease the
fallout from money lost this year. “We want them to know we are here for them,” Daniel said of the continued mission of the organization, best known for its annual Bras for a Cause fundraiser held each October. “If we don’t have the resources they need, we will try to find them. We will leave no stone unturned in the fight against breast cancer.” The year hasn’t been all bad, though. “We were blessed to have a local gentleman come forward and donate a property that we now use as a homeless camp,” said Creed of 903 Mindful. “We are essential because everyone needs somewhere to feel safe (and needs) a place to call home.”

Just as diverse as the region is, so are the industries that call Texoma home. With more than 3,500 employees and more than 100 volunteers, Texoma Medical Center is one of the largest employers in the region. The company is a repeat Best of Texoma first place winner in many categories and top three winner for many as well. “In the face of adversity, we are stronger together,” Marketing Director Amber Sweeney said. “I saw our entire team at TMC come together and step up to the challenges presented by COVID-19, while continuing to provide exceptional care to our patients. The courage, perseverance, and compassion they have shown during this time has been inspiring.” The hospital opened its doors in 1965 as Memorial Hospital. Since then, it has grown into one of the biggest healthcare system providers for the region. “We are extremely grateful for the support the community has shown TMC,” Sweeney said. “The donations, words of encouragement, and community displays of thanks have gone a long way to boost employee morale and it let our staff know just how much they were thought of.” Over in Durant, OmniCare365, a customer service organiza-

tion that specializes in providing inbound, outbound, and sales services for its clients, is drawing workers from both sides of the Red River. According to the company’s website, “OmniCare365 delivers a variety of services to its clients, with a core specialty in driving next level customer experiences. From traditional customer services to reaching your valuable customer/member base for required information, OmniCare365 manages these experiences with the highest level of professionalism and skills to drive the desired results.” They also pride themselves on being a leader in their use of technology to further client services. “OmniCare365 is a key user of the Artificial Intelligence platform which allows us to get the most from our people, replicate the behavior of top performers, and leverage the data to drive innovative thinking and ideas for our clients,” the company’s website says. With locations in Gainesville and Sherman, Knight Furniture has been serving the area for more than 100 years. “We not only want to sell in the community, but it’s important for us to give back to it as well,” Knight Furniture Vice President Joey Gunn said in 2019. “It’s pretty awesome that you’ll see our logo or our team members at the Little League games or at the Chamber of Commerce or at other events in the community. All of that shows that our commitment is a lot deeper than just selling furniture. We hope that’s what people are thinking when they nominate us, and for certain, it encourages us to keep doing it.”

The housing market in 2019 was booming with growth. Both Sherman and Denison, the two largest cities in the region, had nearly 200 new residential housing permits issued during the 12-month period. As 2020 began, the housing market continued on a steady incline. Even with the pandemic, local home builders are not seeing a decline in the need for building services. Banks Construction, JLS Construction and Earnhart Built are three of the most popular home builders in the area. Established in 1999 by Jason Bassermann, Homes by JLS is one of the builders responsible for construction in Magnolia Village, located behind the Sherman Town Center. “When you decide to build your new home, you deserve to find a homebuilder that wants to make your dream a reality,” the company’s website says. “Focusing on architectural integrity, mutual trust and outstanding craftsmanship, we are committed to providing an honest, straightforward and enjoyable home building experience.” More than just custom homes, Earnhart Built has even

There is nowhere else I’d rather be a Realtor, and get to meet new people every day,” Martin said. “Real estate is ever changing and to throw a pandemic in the mix was challenging. Fear of the unknown tried to take over, but learning to adjust and keep on moving was key.” As 2020 continues, real estate forecasts have said markets won’t be slowing down soon, showing where people want to spend their money during this time period. “Who knew this year would be so unpredictable?” Hitchcock said. “I have taken this year as a reset button to find a better balance with work and my health. I work with an amazing team of agents that motivate me each and every day to be better. I strive to bridge the gaps in communication within our industry so that our clients receive top notch service. I believe we are extremely fortunate to work in such an amazing area that has great industry, resources and Lake Texoma in our backyard.”

REAL ESTATE AGENT Recent reports show the real estate market has been doing well despite the challenges associated with 2020. Still, local real estate agents say they are missing interacting with their customers. Lisa Hitchcock of Easy Life Realty said that 2020 has been about keeping positive and up-to-date on day to day changes that not only affect the government but the region as well. “We are fortunate that real estate was deemed essential in Texas,” she said. “Our office quickly implemented virtual open houses. We did Facebook Live and pulled off eight open houses in two hours and had over 1,000 views. We are still learning and finding new ways to stay safe and still get our listings in front of our community. Shan-

non Gladen started Texoma Curbside and has been a shining example of seeing a need and filling it. Without her, our local restaurants would not have fared so well.” Hitchcock, along with Gladen, were both nominated for Best of Texoma 2020. Gladen’s fast thinking in starting Texoma Curbside is just one thing local real estate agents have had to do to keep themselves relevant in a world dealing with challenge after challenge. “It is hard for a consumer to see the details or ‘feel’ the home by video,” she said. “It is an honor to me because it means that the general public feels like I am a good fit for this award and that means I am doing my job well.” For Realtor Evan Martin of RE/MAX Signature Properties, who was also

nominated for a top three Best of Texoma award, the uncertainty of not knowing if someone would want to get out to look at homes available on the market was not enough to stop working hard. “I will never get tired of the feeling I get when I have first-time home buyers and the excitement they have through the whole process,” Martin said. “Everyone that knows me knows I work hard and am dedicated to each and every client. I expect the best for clients and won’t stop until they are completely satisfied. It’s important to me to give back to the community that gives back to me. I am so proud to be part of Texoma.” The safety that comes with having a place to live is essential, Martin said. “I know this area well. This is home.
