he last year has been another record year at Lake Texoma! Many of our marinas, state parks, camping areas, and other lake businesses have seen an increase in traffic and record numbers over the last two years. It has been an interesting time to say the least! There were many first-time visitors to the area who were experiencing lake life and camping for the very first time. Many of those learned that they loved it and were return visitors this past year! Some even purchased boats and campers to continue their new-found interests and some even decided to make Lake Texoma home!

Check out the Listicles on each community page to locate the “Must See’s” and “Must Do’s” while you are in town. You should also visit their websites to see what upcoming events they have scheduled throughout the year. Several fun and exciting events that must be experienced while visiting, are the Magnolia Festival in Durant, the Sand Bass Festival in Madill, the Doc Holliday Festival in Denison, the Peanut Festival in Whitesboro, and the Frontier Days Festival in Pottsboro.
Texoma has so much to offer. From hiking, boating, and lodging, historical sites, the arts, wineries, breweries, and distilleries, to shopping in our local communities, there is a little something for everyone!
We are starting to see some new development on the Oklahoma side, which will be fantastic once it is completed! There is a new lodge and casino that are currently being built and several phases of additional development starting. We are excited about what we are seeing and for what is to come! The new developments should make Lake Texoma and the Texoma Region a destination! We hope to see you soon at Lake Texoma! A Lake for All Seasons!

Whitesboro is ideally situated to live, shop, play and relax. Located in west Grayson County at the crossroads of US Hwy 82 and US Hwy 377, the city is only an hour North of the Dallas-Ft Worth metroplex, and approximately 2 hours South of Oklahoma City.
Our small-town atmosphere is supported by family bonds, friendships and community involvement in everything from education and preservation to beautification, events and much more. Whitesboro has many quaint little shops ranging from antiques to boutiques, an old fashion soda fountain, restored old church and the Younger-Sullivan House among

others. Accommodations in and around Whitesboro include motels, cabins, campgrounds and RV parks. Our community also has equine facilities, ranches and a leading horse industry. Downtown Whitesboro has been home to the Annual Peanut Festival since 1965. The event is held the third Saturday in October each year. This festival draws crowds in excess of 10,000 during the one-day event. Free admission with food, crafts, displays, entertainment stages, a parade, carnival and fun for the entire family. Also, don’t forget the 4th of July weekend rodeo and the downtown Christmas events.

With Lake Texoma just 12 miles north on Hwy 377, Whitesboro is very close to the lake’s excellent striper fishing, sail and power boating, camping and swimming. Lake Ray Roberts, just 15 miles south on Hwy 377, offers additional opportunities for outdoor recreation and water sports. Visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet on a stroll on one of the hiking trails or the wildlife at Hagerman Wildlife Refuge on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma. The refuge is home to many species of migrating birds and waterfowl. The visitor center offers information and a gift shop. LAKETEXOMAONLINE.COM

Tishomingo is a dynamic
small town energized by the Chickasaw Nation and their ongoing commitment to the robust economy of their historic Capitol. You can visit the Chickasaw Capitol, Council House Museum, Bank Museum and White House of the Chickasaws in Johnston County. It is the current home of country music superstar, Blake Shelton. In 2017, he opened the first Ole Red, which is home to a restaurant, bar, performance stage and retail shop, and has since expanded to include an event venue, The Doghouse. Along Tishomingo’s Main Street you can find boutiques, restaurants, the glorious Spa 211, The Mulberry and Tishomingo Icehouse, and Pennington Inn. With over 15,000 acres of wildlife

habitat and home to the American bald eagle and white tail deer, you don’t want to miss the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge. Photographers, birders and lovers of wildlife will enjoy a scenic drive or trek. The Blue River is a popular destination for anglers near and far. The bi-annual trout derbies are not to be missed and don’t forget to punch your ticket by visiting this spot on the Oklahoma Fishing Trail. A creek runs through it – Pennington Creek that is – featuring clear water, beautiful falls and a fun swimming hole at the dam. World-renowned golf course designer, Perry Maxwell, placed his mark on Tishomingo back in the 1920s by designing the beautiful 9-hole Riverside Country Club, now known as the Tishomingo Golf Course.

Tishomingo is also a college town, with Murray State College in its city limits. With a growing student population and ever-expanding programs, along with a vibrant campus and building expansions, it certainly is one of the most beautiful college campuses in Oklahoma. arshall County, Oklahoma is known to be the smallest county in Oklahoma. What visitors quickly realize is that it is the smallest county with the biggest heart. Marshall County residents are avid supporters of the county and welcome you to visit any time of year to explore our lake and surrounding towns. Southern Oklahoma on Overton Street in Madill. Since 1975 the Marshall County Historical Society has been filling the museum with history, artifacts and heirlooms. Many of which have been donated by countless Marshall County families. Some of these families also contribute to the Ruby Adkins Art Gallery located in downtown Madill where the Madill Art Club meets monthly. There, you can view hundreds of original oil & watercolor paintings as well as pottery, sculptures and mixed media. In October, visit the annual Madill Art Show located at the Marshall County Expo Center. You will not be disappointed. held on the town square in Madill and takes place the first full week of June. The festival attracts over 40,000 people who travel from across the United States and locally to take part the in carnival, arts and craft fair and food fair. Other events held during the week include a car show, terrapin races, King Sandie Fun Run, King Sandie Fishing Tournament, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, Corn hole tournament, baby crawling contests, and a talent show competition. Free concerts are also featured nightly that include gospel singing, local bands and well-known Nashville recording artists.

The striper is a schooling fish. They group up in big herds. That means you may catch one and then everyone onboard hooks up. The first-person yells “Fish On” and its dominoes down the boat. We call it a fire drill. This happens because the stripers are curious creatures and aggressive feeders. In the Spring the striper come from spawning grounds upriver and will group up in large schools. Thousands of hungry fish are chasing bait and are on a feeding frenzy. In the Summer months, early in the morning they will surface. The fish will corral the bait and will swim to the water’s surface. Once they reach the water’s surface the bait can run but cannot hide. The stripers attack and splash the water with a vengeance. You can see this splashing from a long distance. We pay attention to which direction the school of fish is moving. This is stealth fishing. Slowly motor your boat towards the action. Careful not to spook the bait. We position the boat in front of the school, and they come towards you. We cast large top water plugs that swim like a crippled bait. The plug pops and rattles and the stripers strike. Then the fight is on! Most times this is relatively close to your boat. Hold on, keep a tight line and reel fast. If your catch is stripping the line, you can stop reeling. Be ready to reel as soon as the fish allows. After an hour or so of top water action slows and the fish sound. They stay grouped up and change techniques. We start slabbing. A slab is a lead spoon. We drop and let it fall to the bottom. Sometimes the fish will strike on the fall of the slab. Keep your thumb near the reels spool. Be prepared to thumb the spool and turn the handle to engage the reel. Then on the retrieve the striper will strike hard and almost set the hook themselves. Stripers are excellent table fare. A white flakey mild meat that can be prepared an assorted number of ways. The crappie is the walleye of the South. Both considered a delicacy, I will put the striper right between them as a tasty, superb, and wonderful meal.

When is the last time you caught a fish? For many it’s been too long. Let me introduce you to a lake that you go catching. That’s right not fishing, I mean catching. Lake Texoma fishing is a fisherman’s dream come true! Known as the striped bass capital of the world. Why is it the Striper Capital of the World? Texoma has the best documented natural spawn of striped bass of any lake in the country. This 89,000-acre lake attracts over a million fisherman every year. Our great lake offers most of the Sothern species of game fish. All are popular but the striped bass is what most people opt for. I have fished from Central America up through Mexico and all-over North America. I have yet to find a body of water whether fresh or saltwater that has a higher angler success rate than the great Lake Texoma. These stripers a saltwater transplant are possibly the strongest fighting fish in freshwater. Most times these fish are easy to catch for novices to the seasoned fisher person. Even the smaller fish will surprise you how hard they pull and will fight you to the finish.
People often ask us; can we catch them ourselves? Sure, you can! You can catch these fighting line sides several ways. We advise the newbies that trolling is a great way to locate and catch fish. Live bait bottom fishing is a popular method of catching. We at Striper Express uses artificial lures. That is why people call us. There is not a learning curve. Most days the fish are easily caught. One customer said, “Stripers fight like a bass on steroids!” With Striper Express you are in the game from start to finish, you are casting, setting the hook, and fighting the fish to the finish. We call it the sporting way. All three ways are great ways to catch these excellent game fish. There are lots of local pro fishing guides on the lake. Chartering a guide is a sure path to success. And if you’re here for more than one day and have a boat, hire the guide the first day and they can show you all the tricks to catching. Most of our charters are a drive in “daycation.” Texoma is conveniently located on the Texas/Oklahoma border. Only 90 minutes from Dallas Fort Worth and only two and a half hours from Oklahoma City. You can surf the internet or call the many Chambers of Commerce around the lake for more information. In my opinion this magazine is the best and covers all the bases.
