LAKETEXOMAONLINE.COM

Welcome to this year’s guide!

T

he Lake Texoma Association is a nonprofit organization with a history spanning over 66 years. The mission of the LTA is to preserve, protect and promote Lake Texoma and the Lake Texoma region. We are membership based and hold several fundraising events each year to help us keep our efforts moving forward. The LTA engages with stakeholders from all over the Texoma region, including our members and the US Army Corps of Engineers, who manage Lake Texoma, with local chambers and with federal and state legislators in Oklahoma and Texas. The LTA also works with wildlife and environmental agencies on issues affecting Lake Texoma, when necessary. We know this past year has been

a trying year for many, but with the challenges a new sense of interest and adventure was apparent. There has been an increase in visitors all around the lake region and it was exciting to see! Marinas, state parks, and camping areas were of interest to our visitors looking to get outdoors for some fresh air and sun. For some, there were a lot of firsts. Many went camping for the first time or bought their first boat. Our camping areas were busy and full and on any given weekend boats covered the lake. While there are still some unknowns about 2021, we hope everyone will continue with their newfound sense of adventure and come back to visit Lake Texoma, or even consider making it home! When visiting, please check out our wonderful communities surrounding Lake Texoma and see what they have to offer. There is a little something for everyone.

ishomingo is a dynamic small town energized by the Chickasaw Nation and their ongoing commitment to the robust economy of their historic Capitol. You can visit the Chickasaw Capitol, Council House Museum, Bank Museum and White House of the Chickasaws in Johnston County. It’s the current home of country music superstar, Blake Shelton. In 2017, he opened the first Ole Red, which is home to a restaurant, bar, music venue and retail shop, and has since expanded to include event venue, The Doghouse. You might catch him out at the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, with over 15,000 acres of wildlife habitat and home to the American bald eagle and white tail deer. The Blue River is also a popular destination for anglers near and far. The bi-annual trout derbies are a great time. Tishomingo is also a college town, with Murray State Col-

With a growing student enrollment and ever-expanding educational programs, along with a vibrant campus and building expansions, it certainly is one of the most beautiful college campuses in Oklahoma and is home to the 2013 College World Series baseball team. A creek runs through it-- Pennington Creek that is-- featuring clear water, beautiful falls and a fun swimming hole at the dam. World-renowned golf course designer, Perry Maxwell, placed his mark on Tishomingo back in the mid 1920’s by designing the beautiful 9-hole Riverside Country Club, now known as the Tishomingo Golf and Recreation Club. I ’d forgotten how much I loved camping at the lake as a little girl.

Fishing the day away. It all felt so carefree. As an adult, I love getting the whole family together and making similar memories with my own kids. At Lake Murray State Park, we rented padd leboats, or “water bikes,” as my daughter adorably calls them. Lake Texoma State Park was full of surprises. We all caught so many fish, we ran out of bait! After the rest of us set up camp, we lay on our backs and stared up at the sky, searching for funny shapes in the fluffy clouds. I think that’s my favorite part of being a mom — reconnecting with that child like sense of wonder. Southern Oklahoma brings it out in me every time.

There you can view hundreds of original oil and watercolor paintings as well as pottery, sculptures and mixed media. In October, visit the annual Madill Art Show at the Marshall County Expo Center. L

ake Texoma offers opportunities to escape the tedium of daily life and become one with nature in a way that might not be accessible to those living in the big city. However, seeing and enjoying the great outdoors doesn’t

have to come at the expense of modern convenience and luxury. The lake’s numerous and varied lodging and camping options offer opportunities for outdoorsy types of all levels, including those looking for glamping spots around the lake. The phenomenon of glamping has gained traction in recent years as a way to rough it without really roughing it. The term itself is a portmanteau of the terms “glamorous” and “camping.” Often, glamping tents and cabins offer many modern luxuries including beds, tables and other furnishings. Here are some of the lake’s glamping opportunities:

iGlamp is unique among the lake’s glamping options, as their amenities are not limited to a single camping area. Instead, the service allows customers to choose their own spot across Texoma and iGlamp will set up rented and furnished tents for you. The service charges a nightly rate of $129 for a 16-foot-diameter tent with a queen-sized or two-twin size beds with linens and other furnishings provided and prepared. Each tent comes furnished with pillows, rugs, tables and other necessities for camping and relaxing in luxury. For those who prefer to not cook during their outdoor excursion, the service also offers grocery shopping and meal preparation, breakfast and other packages at an additional fee. Tents are designed for two glampers, however a roll-away bed can be included for an additional fee. One to two week notice is required for reservations. For more information, visit glampingtexoma.com or call (903) 624-7275.

Paradise on Lake Texoma Paradise on Lake Texoma offers a number of lodging options for those who want to keep the glamping style but ditch the tent. Paradise’s mixture of cabanas and kasitas offer a combination of style and simplicity for those looking for the lake experience without roughing it. Six water-front kasitas start at $99 per kasita, per night and can fit up to four people, including small families. Each kasita comes furnished with a

Folks who live around Lake Texoma and the surrounding area, or who travel there for a little space and recreation, find plenty of trails of varying skill levels from which to choose. For instance, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge has five hiking trails that run from

about .75 of a mile to a little more than 5.7 miles. Hagerman is a resource for migrating birds and is therefore a great place to bird watch while hiking. Then there’s Cross Timbers Trail, which offers a 14 mile long hiking experience with views of Lake Texoma. Beginning at Juniper Point and traveling west along Texoma’s southern shoreline through Cedar Bayou Marina, around Paw Paw Creek and Rock Creek, the trail offers hilly terrain through the trees. The vegetation along this trail isn’t sparse, so long pants are a must to keep from discovering a new plant allergy. The Platter Flats Lakeside Trail offers 40 miles of terrain that starts at the Platter Flats

LAKETEXOMAONLINE.COM

Campground and ends at the Lakeside Campground. This trail isn’t just for those who want to use their own feet to get around, as it’s perfectly accessible for horses. Big Mineral Equestrian Trail is also perfect for long horse rides. It’s comprised of two main trails: Walnut Creek Loop and Brushy Creek. The Walnut Creek Loop covers 10 miles and Brushy Creek covers 13 miles. To make it easier to enjoy the trails by horseback, gates along the trail can be opened without riders having to get off their horses. If those rides stretch past sunset, riders and hikers alike can camp at the Platter Flats Campground. Though all this talk of hiking and riding might make you want to hit the trail on the spur of the moment, professionals advise a little planning first. It’s always best to check maps of local trails first, and be sure to pick one within the physical abilities of everyone going along on the adventure. Whether hiking or riding, it’s also a good idea to put some careful planning into the items you’ll need and pack accordingly. One of the key things to bring along is plenty of fresh water for everyone on the trip, and that includes any pets that might be joining in on the fun. Sunscreen is another essential, and it’s always a good idea to bring along what will be needed to take any refuse that may produced back out of the woods when the trip is done.

Fishing Report BY BILL CAREY STRIPER EXPRESS GUIDE SERVICE

Ask any Texoma fisherman. One thing they’ll all agree on is that Lake Texoma is a natural phenomenon. This wonderful lake offers world-class striped bass fishing year around. Yep, year ‘round fishing. The striped bass is a voracious feeder; a schooling fish that roams the lake ambushing the food forage. You can experience exceptional fishing day in and day out and month in and month out all year long. There are times the fishing can be so good, you have to be here to believe it! Let’s travel through a year of fishing. Pull up a chair, get your favorite drink, and see why all four seasons offer some exciting action. Here we go.

WINTER The winter months are trophy months. The stripers bite year ‘round and fatten up in the cold months. In January and February, we trophy hunt. The larger stripers are rogue fish; they’re like a big buck deer: they don’t run with the crowds. We run routes and fish structure with a big RoadRunner jig and tip it with a 9-inch white worm trailer. Hence, big baits = big fish. When we say structure, we target main lake points, mouths of creeks, ditches and humps. There may be up to five big fish holding on structure and they ambush baits. Fish up to 20 pounds can be captured in the winter.

SPRING March is the beginning of spring fishing on Lake Texoma and will last till the end of May. The lake starts warming up and

38

fish begin to gather in schools. Spring may be the most popular of all four seasons. Fishermen have cabin fever and are ready to get outdoors and catch some fish.March, April and May are the primetime spring months. As the lake warms the fishing heats up. Multiple hookups are common. A “hookup” is when an angler yells “I got one!” and it dominoes down the boat and everyone onboard has a hungry, sassy striper on the line. Late April is the beginning of the top-water action. This is

[COURTESY PHOTO/STRIPER EXPRESS]

the most exciting fishing of all! We cast big, 6-inch plugs on the shallow banks and the stripers explode on your offering. The bait moves in the shallow water and the fish follow. Your plug simulates a crippled bait on the surface; anytime your plug is in the water, you’re in the strike zone. We cast the shallow banks at first light in the early morning. Topwater fishing will last for an hour or longer depending on cloud cover. After the top-water action is over, we switch to jigs and/or slabs. A slab is a lead spoon you fish vertically. We locate the schools with our electronics. The stripers are grouped up and roaming the lake in search of shad, the main food forage of stripers.

SUMMER The summer season begins in June on Lake Texoma, when the stripers have finished spawning, and will last until the first of September.. They come back from up rivers and are entering the main lake. Hundreds of thousands of hungry fish

begin running all over the lake and group up in large schools. It starts with slab fishing. We drop the slabs over the side of the boat, let it fall to the bottom and reel up fast. The fish can range from 1 pounders to double digits; 10 pound plus stripers are common. About mid-June, the fish start surfacing. This is the traditional top-water sight fishing. We cast the 6-inch top-water plugs on the feeding fish. You can see the fish busting shad from long distances. What’s happening is the schools of fish find huge bait balls, then scare the bait to the water’s surface and explode on the shad. This will last for a couple of hours, then they sound (the fish will stay grouped up and keep feeding). We drop slabs and “rip” them up. The striper strikes so hard they can take the rod out of your hands!

FALL Fall fishing on Texoma is as popular as the spring season and will continue until mid-November. The lake is cooling down from the heat of summer and the fish are

LAKETEXOMAONLINE.COM

loving it. The fish move up on the flats in September, coming from the deep water and chasing shad in shallower depths. September is a great month for numbers of fish.We cast jigs and bump the slabs on the bottom. Then in October we cast the shallow banks with top-water plugs like in May. We have a new fish finder in October, as thousands of seagulls migrate to the lake for the season. The birds locate fish when the stripers push the shad to the surface. The water cools and we follow the birds; the stripers are schooling under the birds. Again, you can slab the fish vertically or cast jigs for great action and multiple hookups. The same patterns continue through December, our second favorite fishing month on Texoma. Decembers aren’t as cold as they used to be, and it’s typically fall-like temperatures. There must be a zillion seagulls on the lake locating fish for you. There you have it! A year of fishing the seasons on Lake Texoma. The best fishing lake in the whole wide world!

ost of us would agree that 2020 has been a challenging year for our society. In such times of stress, the importance of taking care of our health and well-being, both for ourselves and in our communities, cannot be overstated. Fortunately, living in close proximity to Lake Texoma offers a variety of opportunities to improve our well-being. The health benefits of outdoor activities have been confirmed by science, as a recent study by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that a variety of diseases were less prevalent among people living in close proximity to green spaces. Just spending time outdoors improves our perception of our own well-being and health status, and one local city is striving to enhance the well-being of the entire community through a unique public-private collaboration. Durant is one of two Oklahoma cities working to facilitate community well-being improvement through participation in Blue Zones Project, an innovative approach to elevating health and well-being through enhancements to the built environment. Blue Zones Project is designed to make healthy choices easier to make in our daily lives. The initiative is based on research conducted by National Geographic explorer Dan Buettner into the common traits shared by the world’s healthiest, longest-lived people, residing in communities Buettner refers to as “Blue Zones.” Those common healthy lifestyle habits, known as

the Power 9 Principles, are being applied by residents of more than 50 Blue Zones Project communities across North America, including Durant. Regular physical activity is an effective way to relieve stress and improve well-being, and moving naturally is one of the Blue Zones Power 9 Principles. The health benefits afforded by our proximity to Lake Texoma cannot be overstated, as the multitude of surrounding parks provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy a variety of forms of recreation that encourage natural movement, such as walking, swimming, jogging and hiking one of the several trails in the vicinity. Another of the Power 9 Principles encourages taking time to down shift. Stress may be an unavoidable part of life, but Blue Zones centenarians have built stress-relieving rituals into their daily routines. Spending time outdoors can work wonders in managing stress, and sailing,

fishing and swimming are particularly effective stress-reduction activities offered around Lake Texoma, as well as aquatic activities like jet skiing and tubing. National Wildlife Refuges adjacent to Lake Texoma offer other opportunities for down-shifting. These public lands and waters are set aside to conserve America’s wild animals and plants and provide essential homes for thousands of species, many of which are unique to our region. Lake Texoma is fortunate to enjoy close proximity to both Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge. Both options include extensive nature trails perfect for hiking and observing birds, native plants and other wildlife. Social connectedness is often one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of our well-being, but relationships are a key component of well-being as well as improving quality and quantity of life,

and putting family members and loved ones first is another of the Blue Zones Power 9 Principles. The scenic environs we enjoy in the Lake Texoma region allow for a variety of opportunities to engage in physical activity outside while also spending quality time with loved ones. A bike ride on your own can be a great workout, but bicycling with friends or family also incorporates a positive social element to your workout routine and often makes exercise more enjoyable. Other activities found at Lake Texoma that support social connectedness include camping, horseback riding, golfing, and building a sandcastle on the lakeshore. Regardless of what you decide to do, be sure to take advantage of the natural beauty we are fortunate enough to enjoy in this region, and explore the many ways to improve your well-being while spending time at Lake Texoma.

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS

The Denison Dam is 75! Construction on the Denison Dam was started in 1939 and completed in 1944, with the primary purpose of the Dam being flood control. The Dam is also used in other capacities other than flood control such as water supply, hydroelectric power production, river regulation, navigation and recre-

ation. The Denison Dam project has allowed two federally managed wildlife refuge areas, 47 recreational use areas, two state parks, and 80,000 acres of public hunting land that are all accessible to the public. Renovations of the Dam powerhouse have been ongoing over the last

two years and will soon be completed. A dedication ceremony set to be held at the Dam by the US Army Corps of Engineers has tentatively been scheduled for April of 2021. A kiosk detailing history of the Dam will be located below the Dam area with a display of one of the original turbines that has been removed from

the powerhouse during the renovation process. This area will be a tourist stop at Lake Texoma! With the Dam being a major landmark at Texoma and soon having a visitor’s site and kiosk, the LTA decided to pay tribute to the history of Lake Texoma by having the Denison Dam and the Roosevelt Bridge grace the cover of our 2021 Guide to Lake Texoma. Both are major and well-known landmarks at Lake Texoma and we felt it only right to highlight these masterpieces of their time. The building of both structures and the lake took place during WWII. National Park Service managed the lake from 1946-1949 until management of the lake was turned over to the US Army Corps of Engineers.
