Texas Biomed Contributions
GIVING IS INFECTIOUS TOO!
P
ainting a scary scenario in his new book The Pandemic Century: One Hundred Years of Panic, Hysteria, and Hubris, author Mark Honigsbaum recaps the emergence of nine infectious diseases including Ebola, HIV, Zika and influenza. These are huge health threats and biomedical mysteries. The book paints an uncertain view of the future. However, what he didn’t account for are researchers like those at Texas Biomedical Research Institute – some of the best scientific minds in the country – mounting a battle to win the war against these pathogens. What do infections have to do with giving? I believe giving is infectious. One of my early mentors called the magic that happens when a contributor “gets it” as catching the “donor bug.” Positively, this “bug” moves from one participant to the next and can accumulate miraculous resources… technologies, facilities and experts at places like Texas Biomed.
Our founder, Tom Slick, Jr., knew about the power of philanthropy and its ability to be contagious. Giving created Texas Biomed. Giving has built our campus. Giving sustains us today. Giving is part of our history and our future. Now is the time to catch the “bug” as Texas Biomed implements a bold, 10-year plan to grow our resources to match the pathogenic challenges of the future and enemies like tuberculosis, MRSA, and pneumonia, to name just a few. Meeting the challenges of the future requires the contributions of each of us today. The generosity of our supporters powers our progress. Join the scientific revolution today. It’s infectious!
