Substance and Style
The Argyle is a stately mansion in Alamo Heights that stands as a symbol of a rich past and an inspirational purpose: to support, encourage and foster scientific discovery at Texas Biomed. The private club is the platform for a decades-old relationship between Texas Biomed and those who give their time and money to support the Institute. Each member of The Argyle helps fund the future of research with annual contributions to advance the studies conducted by Texas Biomed scientists. In 2018, The Argyle celebrated a second year with the status of Distinguished Club. This prestigious designation from BoardRoom magazine is a reflection of the excellent member experience which resulted in increased club membership and club usage. Roughly 4% of the 4,000 private clubs nationwide have an active waitlist and The Argyle is one of them. Lectures from scientists at Texas Biomed drew crowds during 2018, increasing the level of club engagement. During the Fireside Chats, audiences learned about many headline-making topics including “The Buzz About Zika: New Cautionary Research” and “100 Years Since the Spanish Flu Pandemic: Are We Safer?” Member contributors — the Coates Charitable Foundation and Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation — are funding some stylish upgrades to the 19th century building. The Argyle is focused on the future with the creation of a new addition — the Coates Tavern — which will become one of the most beautiful and desirable business casual bars in San Antonio and beyond. In an effort to improve the experience of club members, 2018 saw an investment from a generous donation from Ron and Karen Herrmann and their family that will improve access and provide new parking. With eyes trained on the future, The Argyle is expanding the club’s capacity by 15 percent and attracting a younger demographic. With substance and style, this warm and inviting venue is on track to provide excellent dining in unique surroundings for decades to come.
