Development Report

Greetings to all. I am proud to present to you the newly minted, first annual Texas Biomedical Research Institute’s Development Report hot off the press. This report will showcase some of the exciting developments that our gracious and giving donors are supporting and introduce some individuals you may or may not be familiar with. This report will also offer a summary of the incredibly successful Global Health Symposium, held this past April and included participants from across the globe, both virtually and in person.
I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you. If you are reading this, then you are part of something special. Texas Biomedical Research Institute could not do the groundbreaking research that produces the treatments for infectious diseases without your support. The global impact of that support cannot be overstated. From funding the research, to enabling the Institute to seek out and hire the best possible scientists and faculty, to helping us realize our plan for cutting-edge facilities construction during this first phase of our overarching, 10-year strategic plan, you — our donors and our community — have embraced our mission and our vision and have leaned in to support our goals. We absolutely could not do it without you. With your continued support the future before us is bright. New treatments and new technologies await in that future because of your support.
Because of our dedication to community education and your support of the Institution’s educational programs, there is a student in our greater San Antonio community who will have been exposed to our educational outreach and who will, I am positive,
become an impactful future member of the team here at Texas Biomed — all because of your support and your substantial giving.
Of course, I would be remiss not to say thank you to our amazing faculty, our incredible stable of research scientists, and the multitude of behind-the-scenes team members. Without all these people working side by side in concert in our cutting edge facilities, we as an organization would not be able to consistently produce the kind of results we do.
To close, I can say confidently that as incredible as our past has been, this year especially, and with the continued support from individual and corporate donors, and with the continued dedication and hard work from the Texas Biomed Forum and the Founder’s Council, the future looks to be even more exciting.
Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you and enjoy this report.
Larry Schlesinger, MD President and CEOWith your continued support the future before us is bright. New treatments and new technologies await in that future because of your support.

Our Global Health Symposium with the theme, “Leadership. Innovation. Community.” was an incredible, undeniable success. The two-day event kicked off in late April with the goal of forwarding new thinking approaches to society, infectious diseases, and sustainable global development. The symposium was designed to increase dialogue and information sharing that would highlight new developments and foster increased collaboration and communication across the spectrum of global communities addressing infectious diseases. The sessions included a diverse global audience with hundreds of in-person attendees and thousands looking in virtually. Opening remarks by Larry Schlesinger, President and CEO of Texas Biomed on day one was followed by a keynote address by Judy Monroe, President and CEO of the CDC Foundation. Day two received its keynote address from Tony Frank, Chancellor, Colorado State University. The Symposium included multiple concurrent sessions with discussions focused on the three cross-cutting themes of Leadership, Innovation, and Community. These themes were carried on the four tracks of Policy, Global Health, Science and Society.
Sessions included discussions on science and public health education with a STEM focus, gender impacts, how
Texas Biomed and the City of San Antonio celebrated strong leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic at the Global Health Symposium. Sir Richard Branson was featured at the closing ceremony.
global health institutions can address gaps and address priorities long-term, philanthropy in the pandemic era, and more. Speakers included a diverse roster of local and international individuals that included the Hon. Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Rishi Manchanda, President and CEO, HealthBegins; Sameh El-Saharty, Lead Health Policy Specialist, the World Bank; and Lilies Njanga, Africa Director, Malaria No More, United Kingdom, just to name a few of the incredible slate of speakers. A highlight of the second day was the conversation between special virtual speaker Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group and our very own Dr. Schlesinger. Perhaps the session that most inspired was the Youth Perspectives: How will Covid-19 Shape the Next Generation, with student speakers from several local high schools discussing their ideas and feelings on the topic.
Texas Biomed thanks each and every one of the incredible speakers and all of the attendees for making this a successful symposium. A special thank you goes out to the too numerous to name people behind the scenes, without whom we could not have presented this wonderful symposium. We look forward to conducting our next Global Health Symposium in 2023.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Hon. Henry Cisneros were guest speakers. Corinna and JB Richter Carla and John BrozovichThis past June our Capital Campaign Committee Chair, Richard Kardys, longtime manager for Frost Wealth Advisors, passed the torch to Bobby Cavender, President of the Cavender Auto Group. We cannot thank Richard enough for his dedication, vision, and hard work in accomplishing all he did for the Institute during his tenure. We look forward to his continuing support as a Trustee. We also know that Bobby will be just as dedicated and hardworking while infusing Texas Biomed with the passion he brings to the organization. We look forward to the innovative ideas he has for maintaining excellence as the new Committee Chair while fostering existing relationships and developing new ones going forward. As we remember the past and look to the future, thank you both so very much.
Texas Biomed honored the transition leadership of the Board’s Capital Campaign Committee with Richard Kardys handing over the duties to Bobby Cavender.
I am pleased to be passing the baton as chair of the Capital Campaign Committee to Bobby Cavender, who has also been an early supporter of the Global Center for Bioscience and a staunch advocate for Texas Biomed. The time is right for Bobby’s energy and enthusiasm. His passion for Texas Biomed shines bright.
— Richard Kardys, TrusteeWe want to take this opportunity to remember a dear friend of the Texas Biomed family, Mrs. Judy Renick. Judy passed in November of 2020, but the impact of her life still resounds within the halls of the Institute. Judy made it a life-long goal to be involved in the community and her philanthropic bent cast a wide net over San Antonio. Upon her passing Texas Biomed received a generous bequest from Judy, one that continues to impact the institution nearly two years after her death. We continue to be grateful for her generosity.
Planned giving can have a transformational impact at the Institute. We ask that you encourage others to plan for the future in such a way so they, too, can continue to support the vital lifesaving research conducted at Texas Biomed. For more information on planned giving please see txbiomed.pglegacy.org/ or call contact (210) 258-9183.
As a nonprofit organization, the lifesaving research performed at Texas Biomed would simply not be possible without the generous gifts from donors over the years. From giving that established our endowment, to providing funding for new state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, we are so very appreciative of our donors.
— Bruce Edwards, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, Chief Financial Officer

Boasting well over 250 members, the Texas Biomedical Forum, a women’s group dedicated to the fiduciary support of Texas Biomedical Research Institute at large, is one of the most influential arms of the Institute’s enterprise. Amelita Mauzé is one of those women. A member since returning to her hometown in 2008, she could be considered a legacy member as her great uncle was the legendary Tom Slick. Aside from the relationships built over the common goal of raising support for the Institute, Mrs. Mauzé champions the fact that the Forum, under the Texas Biomed umbrella, is a local institution funding the research dedicated to eradicating infectious disease across the globe. Over the past 20 years, the Forum has contributed over $4 million towards Pilot Research Grants, which have enabled Texas Biomed researchers to apply for over $80 million in outside funding, amounting to a 20-fold return on investment.
Mrs. Mauzé’s philosophy of philanthropic giving is one of enthusiasm. “Philanthropy was defined to me as gifts of time, talent, and treasures. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to give all three to an organization that is dear to my heart and continue to be amazed with the fruits [Texas Biomed] brings from our efforts.” She knows the generosity that abounds in San Antonio and actively encourages involvement in causes close to the heart at an early age. Of course, The Forum and Texas Biomed are first on her list. She lauds the Forum’s effective recruiting of women in the community, their fundraising efforts, and the dynamic leadership of the organization for sustaining a standard of excellence over 50 years. Under her leadership, The Forum has gone above and beyond their annual giving to philanthropically support the Global Center for Bioscience by naming the “Forum Fountain,” a prominent fountain at the front of the building that will celebrate the Forum’s legacy of support for many year to come. Mrs. Mauzé looks eagerly toward the future and what it holds for the mission of the Institute.
WAS DEFINED TO ME AS GIFTS OF TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURES.
AMELITA MAUZÉ, 2021 FORUM PRESIDENT
Aaron Asel, current president, and decade long member of the Founder’s Council, believes in the undeniable impact Texas Biomed’s research has had on the global health community. He champions the role that the Founder’s Council has played in assisting that impact. Mr. Asel lauds the unique opportunity to support a local organization that has such a major global impact; an organization that gives its donors unprecedented behind the scenes access into the scientific process and the solutions it is creating. As president, he has overseen the creation of the Legacy Club that encourages philanthropic giving to support the new Global Center for Bioscience. He believes in maintaining and creating further synergistic momentum that encourages the next generation of young philanthropists to become involved not only in Texas Biomed’s incredible legacy, but to become involved in the San Antonio community and beyond. He wholeheartedly believes the opportunity that the Founder’s Council creates is an easy sell to the young leadership in San Antonio:
“…who doesn’t want to learn about cutting edge scientific research, meet scientists at the top of their game, all while being surrounded by the brightest young professionals in town?”
Mr. Asel believes that what sets Texas Biomed apart is the enormous number of lives it impacts through research. He cites the single cell research that could potentially help in reducing the 600,000 plus malaria deaths across the globe, specifically in the juvenile population (age five and below).
The future is bright, and Mr. Asel looks forward to carrying the torch of support for a tradition of scientific excellence and shining that torchlight on Texas Biomed’s scientists and their research; illuminating the possibilities generated from the results of that research.
MR. ASEL LOOKS FORWARD TO CARRYING THE TORCH OF SUPPORT FOR A TRADITION OF SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE AND SHINING THAT TORCHLIGHT ON TEXAS BIOMED’S SCIENTISTS AND THEIR RESEARCH.
After retiring from Procter and Gamble in 2018, Al Rajwani and his wife Nimet began looking for philanthropic endeavors and focused in on Texas Biomed. By fall of 2019 he was a Trustee. The driving force behind his passion for supporting Texas Biomed was influenced by his years of living and working in East Africa, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The loss of family members and firsthand witness to the devastating toll infectious disease levies on the population weighed heavily in his decision to support Texas Biomed’s mission. Over the several years of Mr. Rajwani’s association with the Institute, he has seen its global impact and believes Texas Biomed will be key in combating the next pandemic. He points specifically to the continuing work fighting HIV, Ebola, Hepatitis C and more.
Mr. Rajwani enthusiastically encourages the younger generation to pursue philanthropic endeavors. He believes they should “…meticulously research the institutions [they] are considering support[ing],” and should, “Study [the institution’s] mission/purpose carefully as well as their leadership and most importantly their track record” to ensure they are as informed as possible in how the support they might give will be utilized for “maximum societal impact.” For Mr. Rajwani, Texas Biomed is “Best in Class.” His belief in the results the scientists of Texas Biomed have produced has led him and his family to commit to support the Institute long into the foreseeable future.
OVER THE SEVERAL YEARS OF MR. RAJWANI’S ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE, HE HAS SEEN ITS GLOBAL IMPACT AND BELIEVES THE INSTITUTE WILL BE KEY IN COMBATING THE NEXT PANDEMIC.
When Richard Kardys and his wife Jessie were invited to become Golden Circle members under the Texas Biomedical Research Institute umbrella, they began developing a deeper understanding of the incredible research being conducted. By attending different forums where the Texas Biomed research scientists presented their studies, findings, and cures, Mr. Kardys could see first-hand the life- and world-changing effects of the work being conducted
“I believe,” says Mr. Kardys, “that… helping prevent or cure these diseases can be one of the greatest ways to help humanity.”
Mr. Kardys, expounding on the idea of philanthropy, believes that being a good steward of the gifts one has accumulated means being able to leave the world a better place by giving of those gifts. He points to the incredible legacy of Texas Biomedical Research Institute’s founder, Tom Slick. “[Slick] was a very generous San Antonio philanthropist who understood the need to give back and make the world a better place. His generosity and long-term vision were great examples for all San Antonians.” Mr. Kardys’ advice to young people is to make a habit of giving. He also says, “as you give there will be unexpected blessings, fulfillment and peace that come back to you.” Mr. Kardys can think of no better way to give back than to support Texas Biomed and further believes that the Institute will have the greatest likelihood of improving the lives of our families, our community, and our world.
AS YOU GIVE THERE WILL BE UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS, FULFILLMENT AND PEACE THAT COME BACK TO YOU.
— RICHARD KARDYS, TRUSTEE
