The day started with the first All School Mass of the year, which was concelebrated by BK’s Chaplain Father Don Fraser and Father Rob Cook, ’89, Father Jerry Funke, and Father Camilo Garcia. Following the Mass of the Holy Spirit, students and guests were invited to the James R. Wilson Gymnasium for a birthday party! We were honored to have Boise Mayor Dave Bieter, ’78, declare September 3, Bishop Kelly Day in Boise, and to have retired BK President and Principal Dave Lachiondo, ’65, cut the birthday cake alongside current BK Student Body President Abhi Madan. White was

the first girl to wear pants at BK, she sewed them herself the night she heard the news! Today the uniform vs. dress code debate still goes on. Some things never change BK!

47. The Dedication of Nick Ysursa Field: Nick Ysursa was a BK graduate from the Class of 1970 who was killed in 1987 when BK dedicated the football field in Nick’s honor in 1989. Nick played quarterback for Coach Chuck Forrestal the last year Forrestal was at BK. The team went undefeated that season. “Nick was a class person. As good an athlete, and as good a student as he was, he was interested in everybody and had no great airs about himself,” Forrestal remembers. “He had my respect as a player and student, and as a young man growing up.” 46. Dave Skinner, ’71, and Ben Ysursa, ’67, Radio Broadcasts: For 25 years this dynamic duo has been the voice of Bishop Kelly over the airwaves. No one could be more dedicated to Bishop Kelly sports! Both Dave and Ben are parents of Alumknights, and Dave has been a teacher and coach at BK for more than 20 years. 45. 104 State Championships over 50 Years: BK has a lot of hardware in the trophy cases around campus and state banners hanging in the Carley Center. 43. The BK Kitchen Crew: For 50 years a group of dedicated people (many of them BK moms) has served hot, nutritious lunches to an army of hungry teenagers at BK. Alice Cronin spent many years in the BK kitchen, and was a second mom to a lot of students who needed a reminder to eat their veggies and drink their milk. Alice was so loved that the cafeteria is named in her honor! 42. The Carley Athletic Center: Built in 2000 thanks to generous gifts from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation, and the Carley Family, our beautiful athletic facility gives Bishop Kelly the needed space to accommodate our growing athletic programs, and to provide strength and conditioning classes that help keep our athletes safer when they compete. We know that facilities don’t necessarily make great athletes, but it’s worth noting that more than half the state championships won by the Knights were won after the Carley Center’s opening. 41. The 2013 State Playoff Football Game Against Kuna: On a crisp night in November of 2013 Bishop Kelly took the field against rivals Kuna High School. But when Kuna’s

That presented another

game. In just three seasons Fr. Wemhoff ’s team brought home a state championship, and the bragging rights that go with it. “He loved to give Father Wilson a hard time about it,” remembers Alan Day, ’77. Until then, Father Wilson’s Golf Team had the only state championship trophy in the case. But BK tennis was just getting started. Over the next seven years the Tennis Team would bring home five more state championships, including multiple titles for Alan and his brothers Bryan, ’72, and Michael, ’74. To date, tennis is the winningest athletic program in BK’s history, with 16 state championships to its credit. The Day brothers came by their love of tennis naturally. Their mother, Terry Day was a founding member of the Boise Racquet and Swim Club, and instrumental in starting the tennis program at BK. Along with other tennis playing families like the Hawleys, the Baxters, the Crooks, and the Hoenes, Terry Day believed that Bishop Kelly already had students with the talent to field

problem. As the mother of three boys, Terry grew concerned that BK’s practice location near 23rd Street was too close to Gil’s K9 bar. Terry thought the temptation to stop for a cold one might prove too great for some of the teen players, and so she began pressuring her husband Pat to donate money to build tennis courts at BK. Over the years, Pat offered the donation several times, but for various reasons the courts were put on hold. Then in the early 1990s the apartment complex next door to Bishop Kelly offered to build tennis courts that the school and residents could share. Although it was wonderful to finally have practice space at BK, the courts (which are located behind the football stadium) were not ideal. With only four tennis courts to practice on, it wasn’t possible to accommodate both varsity and junior varsity tennis programs. A minimum of six courts were necessary to host home matches, and for spectators, the experience was frustrating at best. “It’s pretty abysmal when the winningest athletic program in the history of the school doesn’t even have a facility that can accommodate a home match,” said BK President Rich Raimondi. “Add to that the fact that those courts were more than 20 years old and needed significant updating and repair. The time was right to invest in tennis.”

Chumich learned about the school while watching one of her favorite shows, Project Runway. She researched FIDM and learned that it was one of the top five fashion design schools in the world. From there, she applied to be part of a week-long summer program where she participated in the kinds of classes and workshops that students enrolled at FIDM take. both in terms of infrastructure, staff, and the ability to support students who have financial need? • How will Bishop Kelly develop in our students the skills and competencies needed for success in the 21st century – critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication? • What can Bishop Kelly do to strengthen key programs; such as performing and visual arts, athletics, and STEM? Given BK’s enrollment growth of more than 20% over the last four years, BK Vision 2020 prepares BK to grow to a student population of 1,000. me to read when I was a small child. After Golden Books and comic books, my first real book was that wonderful adventure book which Hemmingway called the source of all modern literature. Living in Berkeley, Calif., from when I was nine until I was 18, I was surrounded by literally millions of books. In those days, there were several dozen book stores in that university town. (Most are gone now.) I lived in those book stores. I had a paper route, delivering The Oakland Tribune. Most of my profits went to buying books. Later, I would sell them and buy some more. I have done this for over 60 years. To quote the 16th Century priest-philosopher Erasmus, “Whenever I get a little money, I buy books. If there is any left, I buy food and clothing.” Collecting books has been correctly, if not somewhat critically, called a “gentle madness.” Once one is infected with the virus of bibliomania, there is no known cure. By bequeathing my books to Bishop Kelly High School, I ensure

fantasies. I am an avid reader and having books near me brings me comfort. I fall asleep nearly every night reading a book. Although there aren’t as many book stores as there used to be, the Internet has helped readers immeasurably. More books are sold – and read – today than at any time in history. More portals to the past are being opened and more pathways to the future are being discovered. From the Babylonians, to the ancient Greeks, libraries have preserved the wisdom of Civilization. In theory, these repositories of books can save us from making the same historical mistakes over and over again. If only enough people will read the books therein. Not for nothing does the word “Bible” mean book.

The Bishop Kelly Foundation Thirteen prominent Boiseans, seven Catholics and six non-Catholics, were invited to dinner at Hillcrest Country Club, hosted by W. Larry Mills, to discuss the state of affairs at Bishop Kelly. After listening to Father Wilson’s vision, Sam Kaufman, a respected local attorney, summarized the situation when he said, “It seems to me that we have two needs here – one immediate and one long range. We must address the immediate needs of the school to make sure it does not close, and we have to find a way to ensure its long term security.” This was exactly what Father had in mind, and the other thirteen people assembled there enthusiastically agreed. Thus, the Bishop Kelly Foundation was born. From “History of Bishop Kelly High School & the Bishop Kelly Foundation by Father James R. Wilson,” describing a 1975 meeting between Father Wilson and the founders of the Bishop Kelly Foundation.

BK Families Benefit from Estate Planning Services By: Mike Russell, ’82, Director of Development Estate planning isn’t a subject that most people are enthusiastic about discussing. Planning for the end of your life can be emotional, uncomfortable, and even

overwhelming. But those conversations are critical if you wish to develop an estate plan that is in line with your values and wishes. Eighteen months ago Bishop Kelly began offering a program that allows our community to take advantage of Values-

Based Estate Planning through Thompson and Associates. This is a gift that we offer to members of our community at no cost. The goal of the program is to help Alumni and Friends of Bishop Kelly thoughtfully create, or update, an estate plan that maximizes their assets and ensures that their values,

Associates consultant, he helped her warm up to the idea. Allan is easy to talk to and the environment is relaxed. He gave us the structure to have critical conversations without it being stressful.” Tim and Mary Beth met with Allan three times over the course of several months. “After the first meeting it almost seemed too simple. And then we did the homework ... We would complete our assignments individually, and then share and discuss our results. We realized that we weren’t always on the same page about how we wanted to distribute our assets. But ultimately we were able to build a plan that we were both comfortable with. Our estate plan is now a true reflection of what is important to us – our family, and the non-profit organizations that we want to support.”
