Oasis Kadakaamán

Las palabras sobran para describir el asombro que genera vislumbrar desde las alturas el manto acuífero repleto de vida. Contrasta con el color marrón de las montañas que conducen a esta vista. Aquí convergen más de 10 arroyos y es hogar para aves migratorias y endémicas, entre otras criaturas. El oasis es potencial atractivo de estudio y educación ambiental por su importancia vital para la comunidad.

Words cannot convey the wonder experienced upon viewing this aquatic carpet of life from above. It contrasts against the brown of the mountains that lead to this perspective. Here, more than ten streams come together and are home to various animals, including migratory and native birds. In addition to being of vital importance to the community, the oasis has the potential to be a center for environmental research and teaching.

Una herencia de los misioneros jesuitas a los cochimíes catequizados fue la enseñanza de la practica agrícola, quienes para 1728 ya se hallaban trabajando el cultivo del trigo, maíz, aceitunas, higos y caña de azúcar. En 1905 el viajero Arthur W. North escribió que en el oasis contó más de cincuenta mil palmas datileras. El maestro Jesús Castro Agúndez escribió “San Ignacio es un verdadero oasis con su producción datilera muy considerable, con viñedos, olivares e higueras”.

A noteworthy legacy left by the Jesuit missionaries was the instruction of agricultural methods to the catechized Cochimíes. By 1728, the Cochimíes were already producing wheat, corn, olives, figs, and sugar cane. In 1905, the explorer Arthur W. North wrote that he reported counting more than fifty thousand date palms in the oasis. The teacher and politician Jesús Castro Agúndez wrote, "San Ignacio is a true oasis with its very considerable production of date palms, vineyards, olive groves, and fig trees".
