The recent Metro Manila Pride March (MMPM) 2019 tripled its attendees EDITORIAL in a whopping 77,000 number of protestors, filling Marikina Sports Center with vibrant rainbow flags, colorful decorations, and undying enthusiasm despite the rain. The event tackled its century-long advocacy for Gender Equality, Legal Rights and fight against LGBTQIA+ discrimination and prejudice. Love: Unbounded TAG-LAMIG Winmark Bombio College of Teacher Education

In light of the issue of SOGIE Bill and sexuality in the Philippines, not only lawmakEDITORIAL ers are having a debate, but also of different church denominations. There are multi-faceted stories and context which are contrasting --- and in the end, churches in the Philippines do not have a stand. Who knows the context? Linguist and theologian K. Renato Lings in his book, Love Lost in Translation: Homosexuality and the Bible, tackles about the fault in language translation of the Bible. Accuracy will not be an issue, but context does. One issue in which Christianity doesn’t have a stand is whether they will believe that only man and woman were created—Adam and Eve, or they will believe that love shouldn’t be exclusive. Lings stated that the name ‘Adam’ was only a product of mistranslation. The name Adam comes from the word ‘Adamah’ which means an earthling, genderless. As the story in the bible will continue, God took out a portion of his flesh while Adam is sleeping and make it the woman named ‘Eve’. Taking Lings’ view, sexuality and gender are only introduced into the moment that they become separate. The issue of gender inequality here in the Philippines rooted from the fundamentalist view of the script. There are three types of sex; not just two: male, female and intersex. Didn’t God also created the intersex? Did God allow the story of the inter-

sex to be untold? Another issue, being a member of the LGBTQIA+++EDITORIAL is a sin. Most of the churches, in their interpretation of Sodom and Gomorrah—which was burned into ashes— also blamed the people for being homosexuals. They stated that the reason why the city of Sodom and Gomorrah was punished by God was because of the people practicing homosexuality. In Genesis 19: 4-5, the man of Sodom and Gomorrah circled the house of Lot, so that they will have sex with his visitors. In early translation of the biblical text, the term “sex” was not introduced; rather the term used is “meet”. Biblical scholars justified that the reason of meeting Lot’s visitors was to ensure their city’s security; Lings stated that it was the people of Sodom and Gomorrah’ wrongdoings, not specifically, of their homosexuality. Does God value sexuality more than love? Isn’t God a God of justice? Who knows the context? No one. Biblical truths were set off far beyond human understanding. However, I only believe in one thing, love. Jesus Christ summarized the Ten Commandments : love; He also showed his love by laying down his life for humanity. Churches preaching the words of God should preach love, which is inclusive, unbounded. Stop interpreting the script to sustain own benefits, to justify own ideals. If that will happen, church, in its totality—breadth and depth of teachings up to the inclusivity of the people—will meet up in the point of concurrency, which is love.****

my knowledge. I manifest poor emotional control. Emotions often rule over me. When EDITORIAL things get too much and more personal without my friends knowing enough, I start to take them seriously and bottle them up until I cannot hold the emotion anymore that I burst into tears—one that is uncommon to typical men. Peppered up by bullying, other boys perceived me different for my weak physique and weird relationship with mostly girls. On a desperate attempt to prove that I am not gay, I conducted myself the way men feel make them a man. A CCTV footage was presented during the show and can be seen Limjuco forced the boy to sit outside the classroom as punishment for not bringing his report card, which Bañez must have seen a sign of humiliation and maltreatment. Tulfo then insisted that it was a form of child abuse which is against R.A No. 7610 or the Child Abuse Law. Bañez angrily wished the revocation of the teachers license as a public school teacher. After receiving a backlash with 287,00 dislikes on YouTube and tremendous amount of criticisms, Tulfo apologized to the netizens after he pushed in force the revocation of the license of a teacher who received complaint during his show. The education department also appealed for cooperation and coordination of its stakeholders to promote trust, respect and dignity to all learners, teachers and school administrations. Teachers are the second parents and schools are considered the second home. Teachers guide students to be respectful and knowledgeable, they put their time and efforts in educating the young ones with all their strength, put their lives at risk to pave way for a better future for all children. To make the story short, teachers must be recognized for their never-ending efforts in providing a well and safe environment for all. Indonesian President Joko Widodo commented towards the Filipino surfer named Roger Casugay, 25, after saving his opponent in surfing competition during the 30th South East Asian (SEA) games in San Juan La Union, Friday, December 6.

The question is... What if government leaders are all like him? What if they have this “malasakit sa kapwa” without thinking of what they can get from people?

Casugay helped the Indonesian competitor from falling from his board unmindful of the ongoing competition. He then publicly said that he doesn’t want to be called as hero for what he did. But rather he encouraged everyone to help if you have something to give.

What he did was priceless that even a gold medal can’t reciprocate.

What if the country itself is the surfing board and leaders are like Casugay? What if they aim to ride together instead of pulling each other’s down? What if they are leaders with ears and eyes open to the needs of their countrymen? What if they help each other surfing the waves of challenges that the Philippines is facing? I guess we could be more proud of our nation. I guess Philippines can be more far than today. I guess there’s a brighter tomorrow for each and every one. I guess there’s more than a “kikyam” to meet the standards of the athletes.

Filipino citizens also posted pictures of the two surfers riding in Casugay’s board as they went back to the shore. They both seems happy as if they both won the competition. That picture was later shared by official SEA games Facebook account and were seen by many. But here’s a thing: What Casugay did is a small step to change? Yes. Aside from holding the said title, Carandang hauled special awards including Ms. Photogenic, Best in Production Number, Best in Uniform, and Popularity Award. In Question and Answer portion, Castillo was asked to interpret the photo flashed on screen and his answer as quoted: “Ang litrato po ay nagpapakita ng pagkakaisa despite po ng pagkakaiba-iba ng bawat tao sa buong mundo. Ito po ay marapat lamang na pairalin po hindi lamang po sa Pilipinas kung hindi sa buong mundo dahil sa pamamagitan po ng pagkakaisa o unity ay sama-sama po tayong uunlad hindi lamang sa buong Pilipinas pati ang buong mundo ay magkakaroon

ng peace, love, at kaunlaran.” (The picture shows unity despite diversity of nations in the world. This must prevail not only in the Philippines but in the whole world because by unity we grow and attain peace, love, and progress.) On her turn, Carandang answered in response to the photo of stressed man: “May iba’t iba tayong klase ng stress na nararanasan. PPTs

BY PRISCILLA MERCADO

A NEW TAKE ON

Whether you are a professional or a student, investing on your visual presentations is an important component in making a successful report. Making your presentation creative and unique might be one of your goals instead of relying on the pre-sets templates to wow your listeners and catch their attention. Thankfully, creating presentations nowadays has become easier with the aid of applications. The most common and accessible of these is Microsoft PowerPoint also known as Microsoft PPT. Developed by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin at Forethought, Inc., the program was released on April 1987 and was bought for $14 million by Microsoft three months after. Have a focus Before making anything, you need to have a focus on what you want to achieve. Limit the number of words and include only the important details related to your topic. This can be done by making a summary or outline of your report instead of copying all the information. Remember, the reason why you are making a PPT presentation is to provide a concise report.

The key on the design of your presentation depends on how you use these elements: line, shape, color, texture, mass and space. Putting these elements together appropriately can give a lot of impact on your presentation. Just be creative and think outside the box and the design of presentation will turn out well.

ANIMATION & TRANSITIONS

Now that you have a design, adding animation and transition is the final touch on your presentation. However, be careful on choosing what special affects you will apply. A friendly advice, don’t overdo it.

CONSISTENCY Plan the layout of your whole presentation. Limit the number of font styles and colors you will use. Being consistent on the font styles, design and animation adds formality and elegance on your presentation.

All these tips are just a guide to enhance your visuals. Have fun in showcasing your artistic side! ***

LSPU STUDENT HANDBOOK 2.0

Every institution, especially an educational institution, has its own mission, vision, and distinctive ways to bring total progression of the people who are entrusted to its custody and to those who swear to abide all its rules and regulations. Every school must come up a handy student handbook to watch the welfare of every student. In changing times, the school must undergo better policy enhancement to update students’ rights and limitations. Here are the new laws that must be included in the student handbook:

DRUG-FREE REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9165

AN ACT INSTITUTING THE COMPREHENSIVE DANGEROUS DRUGS ACT OF 2002, REPEALING REPUBLIC ACT NO. 6425, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE DANGEROUS DRUGS ACT OF 1972, AS AMENDED, PROVIDING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

The school is the second home of the children so it must be safe and free from any kinds of vices such as drugs.

SMOKE-FREE

EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 26

PROVIDING FOR THE ESTABLISHEMENT OF SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENTS IN PUBLIC AND ENCLOSED PLACESPOSES

Students deserve a smoke-free and clean environment. Smoking has dangerous effects to our bodies, most especially to second-hand smokers – those who breathe fumes from firsthand smokers.

FOOD SAFETY

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10611

AN ACT TO STRENGTHEN THE FOOD SAFETY REGULATORY SYSTEM IN THE COUNTRY TO PROTECT CONSUMER HEALTH AND FACILITATE MARKET ACCESS OF LOCAL FOODS AND FOOD PRODUCTS, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

Food safety is one of many concerns of every educational institution. Students should be safe through the school’s monitoring of the school cafeteria and near food stalls to evaluate food nutritional value and facility sanitary.

FREE TUITION

MENTAL HEALTH REPUBLIC ACT NO. 11036

AN ACT ESTABLISHING A NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH POLICY FOR THE PURPOSE OF ENHANCING THE DELIVERY OF INTEGRATED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, PROMOTING AND PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS UTILIZING PSYCHIATRIC, NEUROLOGIC AND PSYCHOSOCIAL HEALTH SERVICES, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

Students need to know that they can get the help they need. In their college life, they will encounter multiple anxieties and stress circulating in the academe, even with their peers, and family. With this implemented, students are encouraged to go to Guidance Offices and that seeking help is a brave thing to do despite empty pockets.

ANTI-PERVERSION REPUBLIC ACT No. 10931

AN ACT PROMOTING UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO QUALITY TERTIARY EDUCATION BY PROVIDING FOR FREE TUITION AND OTHER SCHOOL FEES IN STATE UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES, LOCAL UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES AND STATE-RUN TECHNICAL-VOCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, ESTABLISHING THE TERTIARY EDUCATION SUBSIDY AND STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM, STRENGTHENING THE UNIFIED STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SYSTEM FOR TERTIARY EDUCATION, AND APPROPRIATING FUND THEREFOR

Students must know that they are entitled of universal access to quality tertiary education which is subsidized freely thru government funding. Education is a right that everyone has the right to learn. Young Focus Organization quotes, “Make sure a child gets an education.”

REPUBLIC ACT NO 9995

AN ACT DEFINING AND PENALIZING THE CRIME OF PHOTO AND VIDEO VOYEURISM, PRESCRIBING PENALTIES THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

Acquiring vulgar and inappropriate materials such as pornography is punishable by law, thus this provision will explain further consequences if students do not follow. A learning environment must sustain a right conduct that is free of perversion. These materials have no place at all in the walls of academic development.

The student handbook might be that book that every kid would not want to read. It is just filled with words but no pictures, right? But the thing is, it is where all the students’ rights are written and all the rules and regulations that one must conform to. Students need to recognize that all that are written in the handy dandy student book will protect them from unnecessary things that will hinder their personal and professional development.

MYSTERY OF ALASKA A TV SERIES REVIEW

BY KIRBY DINGLASAN

UNRAVELLING THE

This 2019 eight-episode series adaptation of the first novel of John Green published on 2005, produced by Triple Hill, Production Fake, Empire Production, and Paramount Television and in release by Hulu is a teen drama story was inspired from the author’s high school experience. The story portrays Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), a teenage boy infatuated with people’s last words. “I go to seek a great perhaps” is his favorite quote attributed to the French poet Francois Rabelais. This lets him uncover more of life’s possibilities by deciding to leave his normal life in Florida and enroll at the Culver Creek Preparatory High School, a boarding school in Alabama. There he met his roommate Chip Martin (Denny Love) who is a nerd connoisseur in planning—like a soldier—of revengeful pranks around the school, mutated to be called “The Colonel”. The Colonel introduced Pudge to his friends, Takumi Hikohito (Jay Lee) and Alaska Young (Kristine Froseth). Since their first meet-up, gorgeous but emotionally unstable Alaska became special to Pudge. With her collected books, Alaska is dreaming to build a book shop that she will later call My Life’s Library. The better Pudge understands her story and attitude, the stronger it

22

strums the chord in his heart falling for Alaska. When Alaska spent time with Pudge one night, she received a phone call that made her hysterical. She immediately asked Pudge and Colonel for help to leave the school. The men distracted Mr. Starnes while Alaska drove away. Unfortunately without them knowing, Alaska drove toward her death in a car crash. Pudge and Colonel blame themselves for the tragedy. Devastated, they search reason for her sudden departure. They found out that Jake, Alaska’s ex-boyfriend, made the phone call reminding her that it was their anniversary and that that was the same day her mother died. It became clear to Pudge and Colonel that Alaska remembered her mother and was about to visit her grave. Directors of the television series were successful in clarifying the story by using before-after technique. Archaic background music, minimal integration of technology, attires, and personal talks were some evident features that made it effective in depicting the 2005-vibe setting. Further showcased were the diverse characters fittingly represented by the chosen artists quintessential to giving justice to the myriad personalities. Beyond doubt were the powerful dialogues that gave much dramatic impact to its entirety. Remarkable plot twists of unpredictable events sparked interest and excitement for more episodes ahead. “Looking for Alaska” is a meaningful young adult fiction showing the varying perspectives on living the teenage life. It is worthy of watching because of relatable dances, pranks, bonding, sex, alcohol and smoking. It shows the actual lives of teens—the openness, freedom, curiosity and independence. This story of Alaska strikes realization that what we possess bring impacts, and as a teen they are aggressive in decision-making; being wise in action and choice is the key to standing out among the rest. *** Image courtesy of Google

A BOOK REVIEW

BY CECILIA JHADZIAH DIVA

THE BRIGHTEST PLACE

It is in unusual places that we meet unusual people – this is exactly how Jennifer Niven brought to life her first young adult novel which tackles about mental health illness and its powerful effects on the person suffering from it.

24

FEATure

On their school bell tower, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch meet. Both had the same intentions on that same day. Jump. However, it was unclear who saves whom which then leads to embark in a journey of teenage love, but much more than that, finding your own brightest place. Violet used to be the popular girl until an accident took away her sister’s life and started feeling the burden of guilt as if she was the one responsible for her sibling’s death (though no one is actually blaming her). Nine months after, still unstable and all depressed, she met Finch, who had undiagnosed bipolar syndrome and together, they embarked on a journey as they “wander” Indiana as part of a school project. In the moment of both struggling with themselves and the people around them, both found solace in each other’s company – it may be the momentary companionship of one another or the peace that it brought them when they “wander” across Indiana, we may never know. Consequently though, as Violet slowly begins to heal, Finch’s wound grew bigger and deeper. One notable thing that can be commended in this book is the raw and honest portrayal of mental illness in both of the characters – one that is rather consciously known by the character itself and one that bottled and bottling up. As there are a lot of young adult books with themes such as the complexity of mental illnesses, it is hard to find one that would show the times of “lowest” of “low”. All the Bright Places’ almost unguarded and life-like characters successfully showed the ups and downs of mental illness – the in-betweens of thriving and surviving. Just like any other person, both Violet and Finch had to go to their own brightest places – a choice that they both chose personally where no one can blame them. Image courtesy of google.com

GO UP: THE EMERGENCE

From nobody to somebody, from dreamer to believer. Trained, dressed, and with the looks of a Korean idol, the first ever all-Filipino boy group which is a product of a Korean entertainment company, ShowBT Entertainment, SB19 is a real show-stopper in the Filipino pop music industry. The five-member boy group consists of Sejun (John Paulo Nase) the group’s leader, Josh (Josh Cullen Santos) lead rapper and dancer, Stell (Stellevestr Ajero) main vocalist and lead dancer, Ken (Felip Jhon Susob) main dancer and vocalist, and Justin (Justin De Dios) visual and vocalist. SB19 surely looks like your usual fan-crazed K-pop group not to mention their musical style which very much resembles Korean culture but the boys made it clear from the very start that they want to create a new genre of Philippine Pop Music (P-pop) and not be a carbon copy of a K-pop group. Sejun proudly talked about their group name -- SB means sound break while 19 symbolized youthful generation and at the same time, it also represents the combination of the country codes of the Philippines and Korea. On October 26, 2018, SB19 successfully debuted their song “Tilaluha” and they made their huge comeback on July 2019 with their

single “Go Up which made them bloom and gain number of fans not just in the Philippines but from other countries as well. Because of the massive support they received, the group appeared on many local TV shows, guesting, and mall shows. However, before the spotlight shined on them, they walked on a rocky road. Each one of them gave up on something to pursue their dreams. Justin and Ken were students but choose to stop, Josh and Stell were an established dance group but they quit, and Sejun was working as a data analysis but decided to take a different path. These five young men took a risk for their dreams. They left Philippines and flee to Korea for the unclear future bringing with them their goal, talent, patience and dedication. As the Korean wave or hallu is warmly welcomed here in the Philippines, K-pop become one of the most popular music genre in the country but SB19 broke borders as they introduced themselves. Filipinos and other foreign people were moved with the group’s new music and started wondering who they are. SB19 is now making their own name and continues to introduce P-pop around the globe. She said that many people are requesting her to create a tutorial video of the “Dalagang Pilipina” challenge and Mimiyuuuh granted this request. She made a comedic video on how to do the challenge. She related the poses she make to awkward situations like “nung nakalunok ka ng tubig tapos tumingin si crush” and these descriptions brought hilarity to the viewers. Image courtesy of google.com

Iconic Voice

Not only that Mimi’s comedic personality made her become known and remembered, her unique voice also portrayed a lot on what she is now. The multiple vivid ornamentations of notes in her voice (kulot ng boses) was her one in a kind asset that she is known for. A humorous comment stated in one of Mimiyuuuh’s vlogs that if Regine Velasquez was “Asia’s Song Bird”, then Mimi is the “Asia’s Song Goat” because only Mimiyuuuh can add that much of “kulot” in a song or sentence. She also created covers of songs like “Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw”, “Amatz”, “Mabagal” and her newest one “All I Want For Christmas Is You” that all gained popularity.

Collab Times

Mimiyuuuh’s videos were always trending so fellow YouTubers would often contact Mimi for a collab video and some of them were also known and famous content creators. She collaborated with Claro the Third who gave her a new vlogging camera as a gift for her success and foreign YouTuber Jamie Zhu known for his hilarious videos. Mimi also collaborated with celebrity vloggers like the Gold Squad (Kadenang Ginto main casts), Alex Gonzaga and Love Marie Escudero or Heart Evangelista which was Mimi’s most classy collab which was the “Mimiyuuuh as Heart Evangelista for a Day” video but what subscribers really want Mimi to create a lot of videos with Benny De Guzman Cua or Benedict Cua.

Love Team

When Mimiyuuuh and Benedict Cua first collaborated on April 12th, their first video together already seemed like they’ve known each other for a long time. Viewers already noticed that these two has some sort of chemistry because they were able to become natural and comfortable with each other on their first video even though their relationship was not that long and thus the new couple ship MimiDict was born. They’re videos such as the “24 Hour Magjowa Challenge” and “One Night Stand” are always full

of fun and laughs. From unintended puns, romantic moves, pick-up lines and sexual humor, Mimiyuuuh and Benidict’s videos never failed to cheer us up and made us laugh our breaths away. This just shows that the bond between the two is genuine and they are a good match as friends, collab buddies or some might say, even as a couple.

Life Goals

With her fame, Mimi can already vlogging as her career for she already had her breakthrough in this business but she is still undecided on this matter. Currently she is now the breadwinner of her family and sustains their everyday needs. She intends to keep helping her parents as well as pursue her passion in fashion. Mimiyuuuh has a great sense of style in outfits. She also intends to popularize her own clothing brand “Fangs” . “a contemporary street style brand that empowers women through unconventional and ragged clothing” and does her own designs. Vlogging was not really Mimiyuuh’s passion but she is hoping for more years of being a content creator.

Awards and Titles

Since she started as vlogger last March and continues to upload her videos, Mimiyuuuh already got her Gold Play Button from YouTube for reaching 1 million subscribers last October and now currently has around 1.57 million subscribers that is impressive because in a span of eight months, Mimiyuuuh already has this influence over the social media. She already received her first title as a vlogger which is the “Trending of the Year Award” at the 2019 E! POP Gala that which recognized this year’s most influential vloggers, bloggers, celebrities, and content creators. Now, do you have a great idea and knowledge about our local j3j3 gh0rL? Mimiyuuuh is certainly an interesting person and one of the most known and trending vloggers this year. It’s not too late to start binge-watching her videos and be ready for a day full of cackles when watching them. Always have water to drink beside as she really loves water. s rit+mo N+ awitiN+ Sa Ritmo ng Awiting Makabayan

“Bayan ko Ibon man may layang lumipad/ Kulungin mo at umiiyak! Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag/Ang ‘di magnasang makaalpas?

“I thought this could be an effective medium to channel my personal thoughts creatively on sustaining the primacy of freedom and dignity in the country” [Sa tingin ko, ito ay maaaring maging isang epektibong daluyan upang maipamahagi nang malikhain ang aking personal na kaisipan upang mapanatili ang pangunahing kalayaan at dangal sa bansa.], saad ni Castillo.

FEDERALISM: DOUBLE EDGED

Issues of federalism are circulating in our country and as usual multi-faceted stories and features are proliferating in the mass media – specifically social media. Many are expressing their opinion, yes it is not bad but, if their opinion regarding this issue is not based on facts, it can be dangerous. In pursuit to a Charter Change, the state and the people should have a proper knowledge about federalism. Embracing a federal form of government is like using a double-edged sword in the battlefield—the first edge pointed into the development, while the other pointed into diversity. It seems like a sacred weapon, that if not used correctly, may destroy the user itself. Experts are still debating about which form of government will best suit our country – whether it is the one which promotes unity beyond diversity or the one that Image courtesy of google.com is promoting a central government.

34

feature

Advantages Immediate Initiative Federalism encourages local initiatives and strengthens these initiatives in their pursuit of their local goals. The states are individually independent in solving their problems, thus they are able to make comprehensive decisions specifically designed to their own states.

Power Management Federalism disperses power and allows power redistribution. It also increases political participants. The increase in political participants will result to a variety of talents and an improvement to workforce.

Anti-Red Tape Federalism cuts the red tape. Imagine a land faraway from Manila wherein all of the schools, police, engineers, hospitals and fire department were controlled by someone in Manila, the action will be so delayed and people will be confused.

Disadvantages Divisive Culture

Welcoming the separation of states, federalism seeks extreme divide between the people—economically, socially and even spiritually. Federalism allows the benefits provided by the government to spread uniquely as regions entertain its own needs.

State Rivalry

According to Kami.com.ph, Philippines is a diverse nation composed of unique groups and ethnic tribes of Filipinos. Whereas, federalism encourages a healthy competition between Filipinos; however due to indifference of autonomous regions, it may further introduce hostile rivalry, since most authentic cultures and beliefs overlap. Federalism promotes states to focus on their own. The idea of letting the states independently govern their community is a risk if not observed carefully by the government. Looking on the battlefield and digging deeper to the war between ourselves, viewing and understanding the features of federalism will subdue weaknesses and definitely raise and enhance the strengths.

TUNNEL OF LOVE PEACE & JOY

Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year and for Filipinos this special day is a way for family gatherings and reunion of hearts, bringing light and warmth to cold Amihan nights. As the ‘ber’ months enter the calendar; most of the Filipino home, buildings, and spaces are starting to be filled with decorations, lights and sounds. It is also a sign that Christmas is coming as Jose Mari Chan’s classic tune of “Christmas in our Hearts”, Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” and as well as the other Filipino & foreign songs dominates every speakers of various establishments. Moreover, different cities and municipalities are also doing their own contribution as they have an annual “Pa-ilaw ni Mayor” in their own plazas and landmarks.

36

FEATure

But, did you know that this joyous festivity can also be seen and feel in schools and universities? Yes, you’ve heard it right. Various campus and universities are holding their own celebration of “Pasko”. And while they do their annual “pa-ilaw”, the Laguna State Polytechnic University- San Pablo City Campus also joins and launches its 1st ever version of Tunnel of Lights and Christmas Tree Lighting. Bright multi-colored LED lights, various Christmas décorations, a Belen and bunches of well-loved Christmas songs give way to façade of LSPU-San Pablo City as it ushers the holiday season with a theme of “PEACE. LOVE. JOY.” Some of the decors that you can see as you go are following: Giant Christmas Tree- It is an approximately 10foot high decorated synthetic tree that is covered with various Christmas balls, glittery snowflakes and accented with golden angels. Christmas Belen- Beside the front gate, you will see a hand-painted version of Belen lighted with various LED sparkles. PEACE.LOVE.JOY- The banners say it all, this wooden standee is comprised of red LED lights alongside with the mixed winter and Filipino colors on the background. Tunnel Of Lights-The highlight of the installation, this approximately 7-8 meters tunnel is filled with various colors of Christmas lights that illuminate the entrance of the university. The light installation becomes an instant attraction as many locals come and post for a picture and uploaded it on Facebook garnering an instant “boom!”. Most of them are from nearby barangays and while others come from the neighboring town. But always remember that no matter how colorful and festive our celebration would be, how simple or extravagant the décor we have. Let us not forget that Christmas is not just a major commercial enterprise but, a free expression of love to our self, friends, and family and most especially to the star and real reason of it- Jesus Christ. After all it is CHRIST-mas, happy holiday folks!****

TRIBES OF THE PHILIPPINES

BY

MEET THE INDIGENOUS

While much cultural changes that had occurred and had been adapted after the Philippines had been colonized by different countries, different indigenous tribes of our country still have their traditions and customs intact considering the fact that they were not affected by American or Spanish colonization since they mostly reside near the mountain areas of the country. However, they are still one of the most marginalized people and least privileged. Because of these factors as well, the usual Mang Juan is not at all familiar with his own indigenous tribe in his own land much more the difference and unique characteristics of each tribe. IGOROT The Igorots are probably the most well-know indigenous tribe in the Philippines. They are composed of more different tribes in the northern part of the country which includes Bontoc, Ibaloi, Isneg, Kalinga, Kankanaey and Tinguian groups. The Igorot tribe is popular as rice-cultivators as an assortment of the group called Ifugaos were known and recognized for creating the famous Banaue Rice Terraces. Other northern indigenous tribes also includes the Isnag from Apayao and Gaddang, and the Ilongots who reside within the Sierra Madre and the Caraballo Mountains. The Ilongots are known for their intense aggressiveness and cultural conservatism. LUMAD In the southern part of the country, a non-Muslim indigenous group known as Lumad can be found. They are the largest indigenous group in the Philippines. The term Lumad is a Cebuano term which translates to variations such as ‘native’ or ‘indigenous’ and ‘born of the earth’. Like the Igorots, the Lumads are comprised of about tribes namely – Blaan, Bukidnon, Higaonon, Mamanwa, Mandaya, Monobo, Mansaka, Sangir, Subanen, Tagabawa, Tagakaulo, Tasaday, and T’boli. The Lumads are generally known for their tribal music produced by the musical instruments that they have created themselves.

BADJAO Badjaos are known as the ‘sea tribes’. It is said that the Badjao children would learn how to swim first before they learn how to walk. They are originally from the islands of Sulu in Mindanao though some of them already moved to different parts of the country. Due to a continuous conflict in the Mindanao area, Badjaos are forced to migrate to neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. The Badjaos’ main source of living are being divers, fishermen and navigators.

MANGYAN Mindoro serves as a home to the indigenous tribe known as Mangyan. Like the Lumads, they also have a big population with eight different Mangyan goups in the country. In contrast with the headhunting tribes of the North and warrior tribes of the South, Mangyans are generally peaceful in nature. Up to this day, a large percentage of the tribe still practice animistic religious beliefs while some have already embraced Christianity.

AETA OR NEGRITO The Aetas or Negritos are one of the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines and are now scattered in the mountainous areas of the country. They are characterized by their dark to dark brown skin. They are also known for their skills in weaving and plaiting and are experts in herbal medicine. Today, most Aetas stay in their ancestral lands as they preserve their culture and traditions. However, they still experience discrimination and even land-grabbing from different sectors of the country.

These are only some of the many indigenous groups in the country. With almost more than 7,000 islands, there surely is a flourishing of different cultures and practices particularly from the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines. And while they continue to preserve and protect what is essentially and rightfully theirs, our is the mission to learn and respect. Image courtesy of google.com

GREEN TECHNOLOGY

Green technology is the solution to ensures the sustainable coexistence of technological advancement with the environment. It is an application of three pro-environment industries which are environmental science, green chemistry and environmental engineering. This field incorporates dynamic ways of generating energy, applying greener alternatives, and designing efficient products to prevent further warming of the earth due to polution and climate change. Here’s a rundown of the top green technology inventions of the year, which highly promotes quality convenience in sustainable living: AIR-INK MIT Media Lab devised a method to turn air pollution into ink. The carbon soot from a car’s exhaust will be collected through the specialized canister which filters the by product, after which the retrieved materials will be processed in the facility to be converted into a high-quality black ink that art enthusiast will love. If further researches will be done, oilbased paints, fabric paints, outdoor paints, and more will be released.

HOME BIOGAS 2.0 HomeBiogas 2.0 is a device that enables us to acquire renewable energy through the conversion of food waste and animal manure into cooking gas. Moreover, this appliance also creates quality liquid fertilizer. The technology uses decomposing ingredients for you to proudly utilize for cooking gas and to nourish your plants and food garden using organic fertilizer. This machine shows that living in a sustainable environment possible.

SEABIN Another challenging task we need to solve is water pollution. Floating trash and debris on bodies of water causes threats like flood and irregularities to the marine life. Don’t worry because “Seabin Project for Cleaner Ocean” is here. This campaign created a device called Seabin where it can collect up to 1.5 kgs of floating debris per day including microplastics up to 2 mm small. If this continues for one year, half tons of debris will be collected but if we just raise our disciple and awareness of waste management, there will be a time that no device will be needed to achieve pollution free environment. AQUAPONICS We are all aware of traditional soil-based gardening right? How about hydroponics which is a method of growing plants without soil by using mineral solutions in a water solvent? But this two have their own handicaps. In the traditional way of planting, pesticides, weeds, pests, fertilizer and man-power is present. On the other hand, hydroponics is expensive and relies on man-made nutrients that composed of chemicals and this method needs intensive care. Aquaponics found a way to combine these two without using harmful chemicals and excess labor. It grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. This system does not rely on synthetic nutrients and pesticides because it depends on fish waste as a fertilizer while the plants do the filtering of water at the same time. This mutual benefit between fish and plant help us save time and money in our crops. SOLAR PAINT Solar panels are indeed costly in the market, good thing Solar Paint was invented! Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology were able to manufacture and developed an innovative solar paint which can generate hydrogen from sunlight and moist air. It is a combination of titanium oxide and synthetic molybdenum-sulfide, a chemical that acts like silica gel that you commonly see when you buy your shoes. Whereas, thru this material, hydrogen produced by splitting hydrogen and oxygen of water can use in fuel cells or even to power a vehicle . According to lead researcher Dr. Torben Daeneke, converting brick wall into energy-harvesting and fuel production real estate and the ever-increasing list of innovative technologies that are helping move humankind away from fossil fuels and propel it towards a future of clean and renewable sources of energy will happen. Green technology is a tool that is badly needed today. Climate is changing and it’s not getting any better. We better use sustainable technology to prevent the further destruction of our land and seas. With the advancement of the said field, we must continue to engineer more systems to help Mother Nature from dying. Image courtesy of google.com

OUTBREAK

PORKY

Too early for fasting, last quarter of this year has the Filipinos resorted to eating chicken or fish instead of pork lest they were to be infected by the disease that killed over 62, 000 pigs since the outbreak as according to the Oct. 24 African Swine Fever bulletin of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

African swine fever, spread by the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) virus of Asfarviridae, is a fatally contagious viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever in domestic pigs and endemic wild boars. It only affects pigs and not people, so it is not a public health threat or food safety concern. As to the European Food Safety Authority, the disease is typically spread through bites of infectious ticks, contact with contaminated animals and objects, and ingestion of virus-contained animal meat. World Organization for Animal Health furthered that its symptoms include high fever, diarrhea, and redness of the ears, abdomen, and legs. The disease is fatal for pigs; it, however, is not transmittable to humans. Neither are there vaccines nor cures. The deadly pig virus is also responsible for consequent economic and production loss. Reports account that P200 billion are earned from the local hog industry, but the sudden outbreak aggravated the P1 billion loss or about $20 million per month since the Department of Agriculture asserted the first ASF case on July 25. Allayed was the swine fever scare perhaps for no more cases anew this closing month of December. While it is now the season of holidays and lechon cannot be any clearer safe to serve in this time’s Filipino Christmas, may it come to our mind that the ASF outbreak remains to be halt and that it already killed nearly 30,000 pigs in our neighbour Indonesia. ***

ABOUT MINDANAO

QUAKES

BY FELIPE DIMACULANGAN, II

SHAKY THOUGHTS

From Oct. 16–31, not less than magnitude 6 earthquakes jolted Cotabato City and other parts of Mindanao, leaving 23 people dead, more than 500 injured, and 185,000 homeless. As if this series of quakes was not enough, another 6.9 temblor hit Davao del Sur on Dec. 15 with over 700 aftershocks recorded on Dec. 17 and a day after reports account nine dead, at least 111 injured, some missing and believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings, and thousands rendered homeless in dire need of food, water, shelter, and medical assistance.

Local residents now ever grip in prayer despite the repeated attempts to shaken their faith. They fear such eventful calamity is a wake-up call making it crystal clear that the world takes its retaliatory toil against human negligence. In theistic discussion, could this be a sign that the Last Days are already counted and that we are nearing the end? What bothers laymen and scientists alike is the possibility that an earthquake as strong as magnitude 6 could be produced again and again at the same region in a short time period. In theory, aftershocks that follow the main shock should be of lower magnitudes. This is explained by the Gutenberg-Richter Law that the magnitude is related to the number of earthquake occurrences. On record, it was a magnitude 6.3 that struck on Oct. 16 followed by a 6.1 and a 6.6 on Oct. 29 and then a 6.5 on Oct. 31. Can someone enlighten this seemingly bizarre case? Perhaps the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) can shed light into this matter. To explain the recent incidences, scientists use the principles of Coulumb stress transfer (CST) theory. Working on this principle, when magnitude 6.3 rocked North Cotabato on Oct.16, it triggered nearby fault lines to release accumulated stress over time generating another quake in the same range of 6 that rattled almost the same place on Oct. 29 and 31. It also appears to be the similar reason for the fifth earthquake above magnitude 6—the latest 6.9 in Padada, Davao del Sur, still in Mindanao. Mercy just may it be considered that there were no afterward tsunami threats or warnings. Cotabato region traces the M’lang Fault, Makilala-Malungon Fault, North Columbio Fault, and South Columbio Fault. Studies showed that western extension of Mindanao Fault and Cotabato Trench further make the place vulnerable to quakes. Too, crumbled homes and buildings and fractured structures were notable. It is deeply marked in our minds that earthquakes are unpredictable and no one can force it to stop from happening. The Republic cannot just spend lavish sum of money to reconstruct infrastructure doomed by typhoons and earthquakes and whatever natural disasters there may come. Build the toughest possible foundations so it is not only the money but the millions of lives they can save. Now the question looms in: Are we ready for the Big One? ***

SELF PORTRAIT My body is a portrait full of scars, loathsome and unwanted little marks; the keepsake of the lost battles. It is a canvas of unadulterated hues that bleeding out through the corner It makes you look way stronger than before. But for me? It isn’t. Unlike explosions, it is as small as undying sparks. It is like a lonely world closing you within its four walls. The scars of yesterday stops me from watching the dawn of tomorrow I am longing for my lost body without anything at all Bring me back to my first draft ---the blank canvas. -ventura

BACKSPACE He slept at 12am

And so she went, Typing slowly.

Leaving her on the call She hears his snores echoing through her phone

“I love you.”

Hits the “end call” button Masquerading again with casual words “You slept. Goodnight.” She texted. Sent.

But wait. What’s the risk, she ponders, Would everything still be the same the next morning? Tonight, he didn’t care, anyway Backspace. Backspace. Backspace.

The blank space blinked and blinked As if it was saying, “What now? I’ve been waiting,”

STABBED I am not writer. I don’t have metaphors in my head My words aren’t running through my veins and spreading on a blank sheet of paper. I am not a writer But, I dream to be one But, I am afraid to write all the poetries inside me for it makes me forgot to breathe. I am scared of my own words to stab me and blood flows from the stories I make. I fear about the metaphors sentence me to death.
