Two years after the pandemic, Batangas State University – Pablo Borbon Campus hosted the 6th Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges – Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC – CAF) with the theme “Advancing Culture and the Arts as Strategic Resource for National Development,” Nov 15.

Dr. Levy Arago Jr., the chairperson of STRASUC and the President of the Western Philippines University (WPU) talked about his observation on the delegates and said, “Sa CALABARZON at MIMAROPA, hindi mahalaga ang kompetisyon. Pero ang mahalaga, kung paano nagkaisa ang mga tao.”

Included in the opening of this year’s STRASUC is the exhibit of different municipalities in Batangas and their main products.

This year’s STRASUC-CAF had less categories compared to the previous STRASUC due to the pandemic.

LSPU’s Manalo wins PASUC ticket for Vocal Solo Jade Manalo secured the first gold medal for Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) in the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges – Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC – CAF) Vocal Solo category, Nov. 15.

With her soothing voice, the first-year Tourism Management student silenced the whole gymnasium during her performance, with her own rendition of “Ililigtas Ka Nya” originally sung by Gary Valenciano.

Davidson A. Arena and King Vincent E. Rollan of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) harmonized their way to the gold medal for Vocal Duet with their rendition of the OPM "Sana Maulit Muli" during the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC - CAF), Nov. 15.

The smooth blending and compatible voice tones of Arena and Rollan gave justice to their song choice, "Sana Maulit Muli", by Gary Valenciano.

Arena and Rollan earned SLSU its first gold medal for this year's STRASUC. On the other hand, Madeline B. Ocampo and Zdenalie J. Pagatpatan from University of the Philippines placed second; meanwhile, Ricca Mae G. Geneta and Omega D. Gobrin of Occidental Mindoro State College placed third.

The duo from SLSU will compete their next battle at the upcoming Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) – Culture and the Arts Festival. ***

MSC’s Adrias captures

first place in Photography

Rose Ann Adrias of Marinduque State College (MSC) won the first place in the Visual Arts – Photography category in the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges – Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC-CAF), held in November 15 at Batangas State University – Pablo Borbon Campus Library.

Themed “Advancing Culture and the Arts as Strategic

Resource for National Development,” the MSC representative angled her lens beneath the feet of an old woman who was about to step on a bamboo.

“Ang symbolism po ng steps at gawi rin po ay yung development po ng ating [culture and arts] sa nation,” she said.

Adrias also shared her struggles with her coach as they thought of the theme, which was broad. 03

“Actually, sa prep, throughout sa prep, hindi sa kampante pero tiwala na ako kay Jade. Manalo, matalo, gagawin niya ang best niya. Kaya hindi rin ako masyado nahirapan sa technicalities and preparation,” coach Danelle Fajot shares about their preparation for the vocal solo.

Manalo secured the first ticket to the Philippines Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) for LSPU, while Pamila Ampong from Mindoro State University took home the second place, and Jaira Mae Caniedo of Romblon State University snatched the third place.

Manalo will represent the Southern Tagalog (Region IV) in the upcoming PASUC. ***

Lajara, Barroga show their wit in the press briefing

Two days before the coronation night, candidates of Festival King and Queen faced the media partners of the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges - Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC-CAF), Nov. 15.

Ms. Mary Rose Rivero asked the candidates of the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU), Floriane Jerick Lajara and Byran Jay Barroga, how they see themselves inspiring the youth of today as a queen and king.

“Actually, that's why we are here as a beauty queen. We are here to empower others.

By our nature, it is what we are advocating for,” Lajara answered.

She also said that the culture of psychology has the power to advocate for the people and society, which she pursues as a BS Psychology student.

Meanwhile, Barroga answered that his way of inspiring the youth is through the pageant, as pageants can speak for the voiceless.

“And I think I can influence other people through sharing our stories, our differences here. I believe that we

are individually beautiful and individually capable doing such things just as we are doing today,” he added.

The coronation night of the search for the festival king and queen will be on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium of the Batangas State University – Pablo Borbon Campus. ***

Meanwhile, Jerome Lingon, coach of Adrias expressed his confidence in her taking a good spot on the competition.

“Ako’y kumpiyansa rito kay Ms. Ann—passionate naman yung bata pagdating sa photography, mayro’n na siyang background; mayro’n na siyang knowledge, saka yung skills niya sa photography, alam kong madadala siya [nito] sa tugatog ng tagumpay na gusto niyang marating,” he added.

MSC now has two golds from Photography and Kundiman competitions.***

Experiencing the Culture of Batangas

The province of Batangas—revered as the “land of beauty and bravery”—is not only known for its many scenic spots, its distinct Tagalog accent, and its strong barako coffee, but also for its rich cultural heritage and the Batanguenos’ passion for it.

In celebration of the 6th Culture and the Arts Festival (CAF) of the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC), delegates and school officials from the 12 participating SUCs assembled once more for a week-long face-to-face competition after more than two years of event hiatus.

In line with this, host campus Batangas State University (BSU) shared a taste of its culture through an exhibit of delicacies and souvenirs unique to the respective towns of the province. This STRASUC Exhibit was set up at the Higher Education Building lobby of Pablo Borbon Campus as organized by the Lipa City Cooperatives Office, together with the university.

Among the exhibited goods were the best products and souvenirs from the different municipalities of Batangas, namely: traditionally weaved local clothes from Ibaan; pasalubongs products made by the Aeta community from Balayan; coffee products, turmeric and tea, and pasalubong goods from Lipa; coco syrup, coco vinegar, and coco sugar from San Juan; and shirts and unique souvenirs from Calatagan,

Naabot ni Jastin Leyhl M. Llasos ng Marinduque State College (MSC) ang pinakamataas na pwesto sa kategoryang Kundiman sa Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges - Culture and the Arts Festival (STRASUC-CAF) na ginanap sa President’s Office ng Batangas State University Pablo Borbon Campus (BSUPBC), Nov. 15.

Nakuha ng binata ang simpatya ng inampalan gamit ang awiting “Pakiusap” ni Francisco Santiago.

“Ang prayer ko lang talaga ay mag-perform nang maayos, saka yung will ni Lord,” wika ng binata.

Ayon naman kay Dr. Asuncion, disiplina sa sarili at sa pagkanta ng kundiman ang matagal na pinaghusayan ng nangangarap maka-awit

“S’yempre medyo rigid ang trainings, no chocolates, no cold water, matutulog nang maaga, proper breathing exercise, then yung discipline sa pagkanta ng kundiman,” ani Asuncion.

Ayon naman kay Emmanuel Canazares, isa rin sa coach at accompanist ni Llosas, unity at mastery ang naging susi nila upang mana-

lo. “Sa kanya ang pagkanta, [akin] ang pagtugtog because only if from the mastery of technical side, we can interpret it better. Doon namin ilalapat yung dynamics, drama, hina at hagod (ng boses, saka namin sya ilalapat if na-master na iyon namin,” sambit ni Canazares.

Like a melodious songbird, Adovas sang “Ang Maya”

by Jose Estrella in perfect falsetto and vibrato.

“Isang malaking bunot po ng tinik [sa dibdib,]” she said when asked what she felt after

she was declared as one of the winners. “After ng kanta ko, nag-set na po ako ng place na inaanticipate ko—[it’s between] 3rd or 4th [place] base sa mga [nadinig] ko sa mga contestants” she revealed.

Moreover, the kundiman bronze medalist plans to practice more her connection with her accompanist for an more effective expression of kundiman songs.

Judges reminded everyone that a key to seize the kundiman competition is to search for a song that blends with your voice.
