PwC Mentoring session On 17th May, 2021, more than 40 students from Semple Memorial Secondary School had the great opportunity to meet two PwC mentors and listen to their sharing in a semi-online mentoring session. They talked about the career path of working in the accounting field and the workplace culture of the company. After listening to the mentors, students shared their thoughts and asked questions. A student told us that the most unforgettable part of the sharing was a picture of soup dumplings, which showed the dynamic work life of PwC employees, as they are able to travel around the world to exchange ideas and get to know different cultures.

We are grateful to have had such valuable time with the mentors. Even though students and mentors cannot meet face-to-face, we feel like we have met two new friends online. Once again, physical distance does not mean social disconnection!

Two PwC mentors give a career talk through online

UBS Pen Pal The Pen Pal Program, co-organized by UBS and Teach Unlimited Foundation has come to an end, and was celebrated at with the closing ceremony on 28th June. Despite being miles away from each other, the distance has not been a barrier for the 24 pen pal participants to build strong friendships.

Encourage students step out their comfort zone by communicate with foreigners

School were active in interacting with their pen pals. It was encouraging that they were willing to challenge themselves and actively socialize with Japanese students despite the potential language barrier. It is equally heartening to see them stepping out of their comfort zone throughout the entire workshop, such as conducting the full conversation with body languages and visual aids to express themselves. We really appreciate the attitude of the students especially the amount of preparation they have done and their commitment to the program. The seeds of friendship had certainly sowed with all these genuine interactions. .

Japanese students share theirs thoughts on culture differences

UBS X CHC Hobby Horse Throughout the entire session, students displayed their enthusiasm in learning about the working culture at UBS, overall industrial development, workplace communication skills, as well as interview tips. UBS volunteers also found the whole activity enjoyable and were surprised by students’ strong interest in getting themselves more familiar with UBS. UBS volunteers shared a lot about their experience, they also gave advice to students on how to better equip themselves in a professional workplace environment and at job interviews.

Participants reflected that the whole activity was fruitful. UBS volunteers are also looking forward to more similar activities in the future.

Fitzroy English Explorer 8 S3 and S4 students participated in two online sessions of English Explorer held by the Teach Unlimited Foundation and Fitzroy Philanthropic Fund (FPF). In the first session, the 5 volunteers from FPF shared about the cultures of other countries, such as Disneyland in America and the Taj Mahal in India. In return, students prepared presentations about cultures they liked and gave them in the second session. There was a ‘chatting time’ in each session where students asked volunteers questions they had prepared beforehand and discussed the things they talked about earlier. Most of the students were shy and uncomfortable speaking English before joining the activity. However, during the activity, students stepped out of their comfort zone, made the extra effort to prepare speeches and present their ideas in English in front of a crowd. It is indeed a big achievement for them.

How music connects our heart Mentee W was passive and sometimes needed further encouragement to speak in front of the class. After several one-on-one online sessions, he was willing to communicate with his PM in English and I discovered his interest in music.

Following this, I invited him and his friends to join my out-of-class sessions. Under a relaxing learning environment, he was more open to speaking English and gradually acted as a small leader to facilitate the sessions.

Board games and music activities were used as mediums to learn more English. In the music sessions, students were able to perform their talents with English songs: Student W & Student O used their primary school experience to lead the ensemble, and gave constructive feedback from time to time; Student M played an instrument for the first time; Student T learnt to control his volume in singing and listen to the others’ feedback. All students enjoyed the process and obtained a sense of achievement. They even expressed their desire to form a band in the future!

The essence of mentoring is a strong rapport, no matter what the mentoring style. My S.4 Mentee Y joined almost all the activities led by me, such as the English small group, board game activities and Dream Pursuing Project. Let’s guess: did he change a lot? Unfortunately, that did not occur,and he only came to a few Zoom sessions. It is a common situation in mentoring where the mentor wants to stimulate the mentee to change but the ‘click moment’ has not yet come. That is, until once when Mentee Y failed his maths test, getting 3 marks only. He brought his need to me and asked me for help. The story went on with spending time to study together and him proactively initiating a studying group, even on Zoom. The click moment only occurs when there is a strong-rapport mentoring relationship and a patient mentor. When it clicks, mentees will bring their needs to the mentor themselves.

Graduation Dinner To celebrate the development and achievement of the Year-2 Program Mentors (2019 - 2020 cohort), the Graduation Dinner 2021 was held on 30th July at the Hongkong Japanese Club. It was a precious opportunity to spend time together playing games, chit-chating and sending warm wishes to our graduating Program Mentors.

Program Mentors took this opportunity to share their learnings and feelings in their 2-year journey with directors, guests and team members. It was a pleasure to witness their persistence and growth, especially in light of the changing and challenging circumstances. They expressed gratitude to their team members and TUF for all the support and trust.

They all have unique hopes and aspirations. With the experiences gained throughout these 2 years and the blessings received, we believe they will continue to persevere and inspire, and TUF will always be here to support them whenever in need.

Orientation Camp This year, we are delighted and excited to be able to welcome our new Program Mentors to join our team in a face-to-face orientation. Although there are so many boundaries and challenges to overcome due to fluctuating changes of the COVID-19, every one of us is working conscientiously to make the O-camp fun, interesting, and inspiring. We selected a series of team-building activities, role-plays, and games, as well as a stimulating “TUF treasure hunt”, to briefly show a whole picture of our work and share our experiences with new colleagues. The design of the O-camp is like a shortened version of our mentoring progress at school. Thus, we look forward to seeing everyone in person and experiencing the “targeting”, “engaging”, “embedding”, and “sustaining” stages together with our next cohort buddies. Again, welcome every new Program Mentors to our TUF family and hope you will enjoy your two years journey here.

Jockey Club Teach Unlimited “Walk with Youth” Mentorship Programme Online Symposium 2021 Jockey Club Teach Unlimited “Walk with Youth” Mentorship Programme Online Symposium was successfully held on 14th July. This symposium mainly focuses on the theme of “Mentoring”. First, we had Mr Tony Wong (Teach Unlimited Foundation Chairperson) and Dr Brad Chan (Yew Chung College of Early childhood education Director - Student Development & Learning Resources) share their insight on mentoring and show us the data support of the students’ improvement.

In the second part, we invited school principals, teacher, alumni mentor, mentor and mentee to be our guests for the panel discussion. They shared a lot about their experiences and reflections on “Mentoring students in Hong Kong School setting”. As Virpal (alumni mentor) said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long time ago.” , we can be stronger with youth mentoring!

10th anniversary video To celebrate the 10th anniversary of TUF, we have produced 5 videos looking back on what we’ve done and how we’ve grown over the years. The videos contain interviews with 30 guests, including past and present supporters, donors, program mentors, partner schools, staff, mentees, and more. Throughout the videos, we used mandala colouring to symbolise the creativity and collaboration involved in our work, while the mandalas themselves represent the fruits of our collective efforts.

The symposium was interactive and the live stream played a big role in communication. Total 292 view on Facebook and 24 view on zoom. The audience gave us feedback and comments instantly which makes the whole event more vivid and lively!

Joyous Christmas Reunion for TUF

Mentorship Learning Community Mentorship Learning Community (MLC) is a Learning community for all Partner School teachers to share their idea of mentoring with different themes of mentoring and practice how to be a mentor in their teaching.

Last session of Mentorship Learning Community (MLC) was completed on 25 June. Due to Pandemic, most sessions were conducted on ZOOM yet on our last sessions were able to conduct in person with 14 members participated in HKSYC&IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College.

Teachers had discussion about future MLC planning and how to help students to achieve a better self. Most teachers expressed the difficulties of virtual mentoring and share experience with fellow MLC teachers, they also suggested to have an online sharing platform for all fellows to use.

We look forward to have more in person sessions in future MLC!

TUF Partner School Community Meeting The 12th Partner School Community Meeting was held on 23rd June and was well attended by 12 school principals and 5 TUF board members. TUF shared updates on key initiatives, new Partner Schools, and a synopsis of our school sustainability strategies. A panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges under the optimisation of four core subjects was held.

The discussion generated great insights on how releasing the lesson hours could allow more creativity and provide more space in mentoring and education support for students.

We also express our sincere gratitude to the retiring principals, Mr Tai Pak Shing (TWGHs Yau Tze Tin Memorial College) and Mr CHAN Chin Lee (HKSYC & IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College)for their dedicated support and leadership in integrating and sustaining TUF Mentoring at their schools.

Operation Desk It is with great excitement and admiration that we congratulate our Program Mentors (2019-21 Cohort) who will be moving on from TUF and into their next chapters. We are particularly proud of their resilience and persistence as they faced the strange challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the wake of COVID-19, Program Mentors faced unprecedented challenges, including the disruption of established instructional programs and routines, the rapid transition from face-to-face mentoring to remote interaction, the emotional toll of isolation due to social distancing efforts, and uncertainty about personal safety and health. If adversity makes people stronger, this cohort will surely move mountains.

I want to thank all the participants for attending the Jockey Club Teach Unlimited “Walk with Youth” Mentorship Programme Online Symposium 2021 on 14th July. We believe that our diverse and dynamic group of speakers and panelists provided in-depth insight, as well as the theory and practice of mentoring students in the New Normal.

Lastly, I am pleased to welcome Helen Ho to our team as new Marketing Executive. Helen will be responsible for developing and executing TUFs marketing plans – covering all elements of social media activities, online and offline marketing events.

Summer vacation is here, don’t forget to have lots of fun with and make sweet and beautiful memories. Have a good summer!
