Welcome Home to Temple!

Dear Friends,

As I write these words, it is still the early days of summer – “June-uary” in Seattle – and when you read them, it will be the waning days of summer, nearly time to turn our attention to the changing season and our upcoming New Year.

Even though the return to Temple in the fall seems far off, we have already begun planning to welcome you back for the High Holy Days. Whether you have been attending services in person at Luther Burbank Park, or online; participating in Endless Opportunities lectures or field trips; working to restore a forest with our social justice team; or dropping your little one off at Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool – whether you are a lifelong member or recently joined – we will be waiting for you in September to welcome you to your Temple home.

When you get here, we look forward to introducing you to Rabbi Brett Weisman, who is joining Temple as Assistant Rabbi, and to Rabbi Laura Rumpf, who will be working with us parttime in adult education and Bridge Family Religion School. We also look forward to introducing or re-introducing you to our hard-working staff, some of whom joined us during COVID and others shortly before. We are all looking forward to being together in person!

As you enter our Seattle and Bellevue Campuses for the High Holy Days this year, our greeters will be ready to welcome you. If you don’t know the greeter at the door, please introduce yourself; we are eager to get to know our newest members in person, and to see old friends. (We will be sending more High Holy Day information out shortly.)

Another way we will be welcoming everyone back is with great programming for every age and stage of life. Parents of every age child will want to join us for the inaugural Bernbaum Family Lecture with esteemed child psychologist Dr. Wendy Mogel, on Sunday, October 9 at 10:30 AM in the Alhadeff Sanctuary. Elders will find a rich panoply of offerings through Endless Opportunities. And we all have a role to play in social justice efforts overseen by Rabbi Avi Fine and others.

To ensure that our doors feel welcoming to every member of our diverse Temple family, the Tzedek (Justice) League surveyed our membership earlier this year. Our leadership will hear their report later this summer, so that we can refine our welcome to all.

I look forward to seeing you and welcoming you home to Temple!

Fondly,

Letter from our Board President

Dear Friends,

As the High Holy Days draw near and we prepare to gather for services, I’ve been reflecting on how grateful I am to be a Temple member. While many religious communities are seeing a drop in membership, our community is growing and thriving. I’m excited to welcome Rabbi Brett Weisman to our congregation, and to continue working with Rabbi Laura Rumpf this fall.

Of course, the start of our new year comes at an uncertain time. The ongoing pandemic and economic pressure continue to pose challenges for us, both as individuals and as a community. As we grapple with the violence of war, mass shootings, and assaults on human rights, it’s easy to feel frustrated, hopeless, and isolated.

But as I look around, I see a congregation that is energized, resilient, and supportive – always looking out for one another and eager to lend a hand. In the past few months alone, Temple members have aided Ukrainian refugees, rallied in support of reproductive rights, and marched against gun violence with our partners in the faith community. No matter what challenges we may face, you have shown your dedication to serving our community and making our world a better and safer place.

Human connection is undeniably powerful, and it’s the very thing that has kept Temple going strong for 123 years. We’re excited to announce our fall programming today and to provide more opportunities for you to meet and get to know other Temple members. In addition to our annual High Holy Day events, we’ll be kicking off our new Bernbaum Family Lecture series on October 9, featuring Dr. Wendy Mogel. And, of course, before the summer ends, we hope you’ll take advantage of the warm weather and join us for Shabbat in the Park!

Whether you’re attending services with your family, volunteering with Shomrei Adamah, or Zooming in for one of our education programs, we hope you find connection and camaraderie at Temple this fall. While we’re still learning to balance in-person, remote, and hybrid experiences, our staff and members have remained flexible, creative, and open to new ideas. We’re committed to listening to your feedback and ensuring we provide memorable and valuable experiences for you and your loved ones.

Thank you for being a Temple member, and for everything you do for this community. It’s an honor to serve you as President.

Warm wishes for the new year,

The Pain and Pleasure of Return

My father (z”l) loved the movie American Graffiti. Though filmed in Petaluma, California as a stand in for the Modesto of director George Lucas’ youth, my father resonated with the same period in his life, albeit located a bit further South in San Francisco. In particular, the famous Mel’s Drive-In on South Van Ness St., featured prominently in the film, was the exact eatery where a teenage Marty Weiner surveyed the social scene over a burger, fries, and malted served on skates.

The compelling feeling that spurred his emotional connection to the film was nostalgia. Originating from the Greek for “return” and “pain,” contemporary studies glean a far more complex and positive experience of this feeling than its etymology would suggest. While often thought of as a wistful pining for an irretrievable past, research has shown that engaging in nostalgia can make us less lonely, less bored, bring us closer to our spouses, and even warm us on cold days. Nostalgia can invest life with more meaning and direction. And paradoxically, a trip down memory lane can even excite us for the future.

As with Proust’s madeleine, Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” (featured prominently in the film soundtrack) seemed to trigger a cascade of images and emotions for my Dad. It was an era of transition and growth for him, a time in which his choice of life mate and life path fell into place. I’m sure that reflecting upon that key period evoked a sense of pride—both in memories of an era of potential and possibility, and in all that he had attained over the years.

For so many of us, the High Holidays are a time of similar spiritual nostalgia, as we reflect on the year that was toward refining our lives for the year ahead. But often this reminiscence is more expansive, as we delve deeply into thoughts of holidays past, surrounded by the warmth of family and tradition, engendering gratitude for the people and events that marked our lives. Often a song, a favorite dish, or a unique holiday tradition unlock a flood

of feelings: The stirring sounds of Kol Nidre—when we sat near beloved grandparents on Yom Kippur Eve; our favorite seat in the sanctuary—where we worshipped beside a beloved spouse; or the tanginess of Bubbe’s brisket—a recipe passed down through the generations. In this potent mélange of emotions, melancholy mixes with thankfulness, infusing the present with purpose, and inspiring the future with promise.

After more than two years of limited connections with our Temple family, the upcoming High Holidays are truly a “teshuvah/return.” But the pain of what’s been lost can be supplanted by the joy of what lies ahead, if we can look to the past beyond lament, forging it into a foundation for the future. Reminders of prayerful melodies, preference for special seats in our sanctuary, and even a hankering for Bubbe’s appeal to the carnivore within can transform lingering longings into compelling expectations.

As a wry but wise (or wise-cracking) sage counseled: Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. Most things aren’t, as the equally amusing quip reminds us that the only thing that is constant is change. In the coming year, let us resolve to put the pain of the past behind us, empowering it to transform our perspective, as we build upon the blessings of what was, cherish the gifts of what is, and welcome the possibilities of what’s to come.

I wish you and yours a shana tova u’metukah a good, sweet, and inspiring year for you, for your families, and for our troubled but trying world.

Creating a Better World

In this edition of Honorable Menschions, we’re recognizing two Temple members in the activist space who are working to create a safer and more just world.

Jessica Piha-Grafstein

Jessica Piha-Grafstein sits on the National Board of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA). She has been a member of the JDCA’s New Leadership Board since March 2021, and serves on the Communications Committee. Her work includes canvassing and organizing phone drives in support of candidates.

“I’m very fortunate to get the opportunity to advocate for my Jewish values. With the recent rise of anti-Semitism, attacks on the rights of women, minority and LBGTQ+

people, and democracy itself, it is more important than ever that the Jewish community elect leaders who share our values.”

When asked what gives her hope for the future and what keeps her motivated in her work, Jessica said: “The young people of this country. They want a kinder and more equitable world. [M]any in government positions are completely out of touch with what the majority of Americans want. Young people will help us turn the tide, no doubt.”

Meredith Goldstein

Meredith Goldstein is the Immediate Past President for the Alliance for Gun Responsibility. She joined the board in 2014 and has served as President, Vice President, and Chairperson of External Affairs. She currently serves on the Executive and External Affairs committees, where she is responsible for community outreach, engaging with legislators, and providing guidance to staff.

“After the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2013, I realized that gun violence wasn’t going away, and it felt maddening that nobody was doing anything about it. I decided, like so many people around the country (including many Temple members), to get involved and help change the status quo. I’m incredibly proud of the work of the Alliance staff and volunteers.

Since 2013, we’ve passed more than 40 community safety laws and three ballot initiatives. We’ve helped elect gun-responsibility majorities in the House and Senate in Olympia and established the Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention. Also, we have broadened our focus to better reflect how people in Black and Brown communities are disproportionately impacted by gun violence and continue to work to center these voices in our advocacy (with much more work to be done).

When we started this work, gun safety bills often couldn’t even get a committee hearing in Olympia. Now, because so many people have gotten involved in this movement and demanded change, life-saving bills are being passed every session.”

Celebrating Then and Now: High School Class of 2022 and JRM Preschool Class of 2009

Former JRM preschoolers reunited on Sunday, May 22. A special thank you to Amy Friedman and Raquel Koz for coming up with this sweet event and organizing everything for the celebration. We hope parents of future grads and JRM Alums will continue the tradition!

From Amy and Raquel: “Currently Seniors, the former JRM Preschool Class of 2009, got together to celebrate their upcoming high school graduation.

We celebrated their future colleges and shared preschool memories with Morah Laurel. Current JRM Preschool students created personal cards for the graduates and Rabbi Weiner stopped by to share his well wishes to the Class of 2022. JENNIFER ROSEN MEADE

Tiyulim: Adventures with TDHS A NEW 7th and 8th Grade Program

We are very excited to bring this new and experimental program to you funded in part by the SAMIS foundation. Tiyulim is a plural Hebrew word often used to describe a journey, hike or trip.

We recognize that 7th and 8th graders have a lot on their plates between school, B’nai Mitzvah studies, and their activities. As they are transitioning to a new stage of their spiritual and moral development, we want to recognize this transition by providing flexible and interestbased immersive experiences. These field trips are designed to create a bridge between TDHS and the larger world, giving our 7th/8th graders a chance to interact with their community from a Jewish lens.

Participants in Tiyulim will choose from 14 experiences that are designed for students to engage with people and places in our community in ways that connect Judaism to subjects that already hold their interest. Each Sunday will be experiential, community building, and will include more in-depth, longer interactive and memorable experiences. The goal is to support our students to see the world through a Jewish lens.

A few examples of topics will include Science & Judaism with a trip to the Allen Brain Institute, Comic Book Art & the Jews with a trip to MoPop, Photography and the Jewish Lens with a trip to the Holocaust Center, Jews in Film and participation in the Seattle Jewish Film Festival, Jews in Sports and a trip to the JCC for Maccabiah games, and Global Jewish Traditions with a pre-Passover Sephardic cooking class.

We are looking for TDHS members to connect us to important community organizations and would love your help! Please contact me at sdelcau@tdhs-nw.org.

ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES

A community-wide program tailored for older Jewish adults with enriching programs held three times a month on a range of topics. A warm and welcoming space for lifelong learning, socializing, and connection with longtime friends while making new ones.

Meet Rabbi Brett Weisman

This summer, Temple welcomes the newest member of our clergy, Rabbi Brett Weisman. We sat down with Rabbi Weisman to learn a bit more about him and his journey to the rabbinate.

BRETT WEISMAN | Assistant Rabbi

Brett Weisman knew he wanted to be a rabbi from a young age. He grew up in a large, vibrant Reform Jewish community in Cleveland, Ohio, and Judaism played a formative role in his life. He recalled memories of summer camp, holidays spent with family and friends, and the sense of connection he felt while studying for his bar mitzvah.

Rabbi Weisman’s Installation will take place in early November. Look for more details this fall!

“My [bar mitzvah] tutor was so positive and really helped me to connect to the Torah as a source of heritage and ancient wisdom,” Weisman said.

Not long after his bar mitzvah, like many teens in the mid-2000’s, he created an AOL Instant Messenger account. The username he chose: RabbiWeisman.

Weisman’s journey to the rabbinate continuted at The Ohio State University, where he earned a B.A. in Comparative Religions. From there, he went on to attend Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles, where he earned an M.A. in Hebrew Letters, and M.A. in Jewish Education, and his Rabbinic Ordination.

“I like to say that my time in rabbinical school was selfish in the best way,” he said. “I learned so much, was able to dive deep into history, the texts, Jewish thought…and really make the most of the opportunities for learning. But the time I spent earning a Masters in Jewish Education was for the Jewish people. [It] required me to ask myself: What role can I play to encourage Jews to find their own voice in this conversation?”

We’re thrilled to welcome Rabbi Weisman, his wife Molly, and their son Daniel as they add their voices to our Temple community. Rabbi Weisman looks forward to getting to know you and supporting you on your Jewish journey.

Tikkun Olam Update

including getting out the vote and helping local people in need.

We are also looking for more people to be involved in our work. Whether you already have an area of justice you are interested in, or you are looking for ways to get involved, we would love to have you join us!

By the time you read this, you will have recently been asked to renew your annual membership contribution and soon will hear more about the Annual Campaign. What do your gifts really pay for?

While it’s true that “dues” and other gifts pay for the day-to-day operations at Temple, that’s only one way to describe it! The other way is to view your contributions through the lens of other members who your financial commitment helps to welcome and serve:

• The newly married couple who moved last year from Chicago

• The baby and her family starting their Jewish journey at JRM

• The 99-year-old Temple member receiving a Rosh Hashanah call

• The teen madrich connecting with a BFRS student after class is over

• The grandparent meeting new friends after relocating to be near family

Whenever you give to Temple, you enter a sacred partnership between everyone in our Temple community: our clergy, staff, other members, and you. In turn, Temple promises to honor your generosity by:

• Respecting that people give what they can, and that every gift matters.

• Acknowledging and recognizing your gifts in a way that is timely and convenient.

• Honoring your specific interests - whether you want to support Temple overall, or a specific program that is personally meaningful to you.

• Making it simple for you to leverage your giving - for example, whether through a Donor-Advised Fund, or a corporate matching program.

• Being transparent about how your contributions are spent.

As we enter the High Holy Days season, please remember what your annual contributions to support “operations” truly do: they make it possible for all of us to gather for services, be inspired by our clergy, greet or meet new friends, remember our loved ones, and turn the page on a new year.

I look forward to saying hello in person!

Don’t miss the opportunity to pay tribute to your dear ones who have passed away.

Please see page 28 for more information

Thank You

5783 Memorial Book

As we prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days, we are also planning for the 5783 Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is a dignified way of paying tribute to our dear ones who have passed away. This book is unrelated to the yahrzeit plaques, which are used for Kaddish during the year. In the Memorial Book, Temple members record for posterity the names of family and friends they wish to remember. This year’s Memorial Book will be online and available in print by request. As always, it will be available in print during in-person High Holy Days services.
