Torah Study

Saturdays | 9:30 AM

In-person or on Zoom

Check weekly eTidings for in-person location

Begin your Shabbat morning with a thought-provoking discussion about the week’s Torah portion and its implications on our lives. For those looking to say the Mi Shebeirach (prayer for healing) and/or the Mourner’s Kaddish for a loved one, names will be read immediately following Torah Study. Everyone is welcome, and no prior experience is necessary.

Congregant-Led Text Study

First Tuesday of the Month | 7:00 PM On Zoom

Join congregant Larry Zommick as he leads a study group on the Book of Proverbs. The guiding belief of Proverbs is that human intellect and wisdom, founded on a fear of G-d and tutored in traditional teaching, is the prime virtue of character. We will read the Book of Proverbs, examine its lessons, and apply those lessons to our own lives. Participants are encouraged to find Jewish commentaries.

If you’re interested, please reach out to Rabbi Speizer for the Zoom link. kspeizer@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 693-3046, talk or text.

Celebrating Growth and Community

As I sit down to write this, I can hardly believe it’s already been four months since I joined this incredible community. Time flies when you’re having fun—or in our case, when you’re diving deep into the fascinating world of synagogue operations!

Our leadership team, made up of our dedicated program directors and managers, has been hard at work. We’ve been taking a magnifying glass to our internal processes, procedures, roles, and responsibilities. It’s like spring cleaning, but instead of dusting off shelves, we’re dusting off old habits and finding new ways to shine.

Speaking of spring, the season of renewal is almost upon us. Just as the flowers begin to bloom and the days grow longer, we’re embracing this time of growth and transformation. Our goal is simple: to better serve you, our cherished members, and the wider community.

We’ve been asking ourselves some important questions: How can we streamline our operations? What can we do to enhance our programs? How can we ensure that every member feels valued and heard? It’s been a journey of discovery and the enthusiasm and creativity of our team have been nothing short of inspiring.

One of the highlights of this process has been the collaborative spirit. We’ve had brainstorming sessions and lively debates. We’ve laughed, we’ve learned, and most importantly, we’ve listened—to each other and to you.

In line with this theme of renewal, we are all excited to begin the long-awaited, large-scale renovation of our Seattle campus beginning in February. This renovation is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating a

space that reflects our vibrant community and supports our mission. Just as spring brings new life, our renovated campus will bring new opportunities for connection, learning, and growth.

As we move forward, you can expect to see some exciting changes. We’re refining our programs to make them more engaging and accessible. We’re enhancing our communication channels to keep you better informed. And we’re committed to fostering a welcoming environment where everyone feels at home.

In the spirit of spring, I encourage you to embrace this season of renewal with us. Get involved, share your ideas, and let’s continue to grow together. After all, a synagogue is more than just a building—it’s a community, and each one of you plays a vital role in making it vibrant and strong.

Thank you for your support and trust. Here’s to new beginnings and a bright future!

Letter from Our Board President

2025 is off to an exciting start at Temple! Our Temple community is growing rapidly and so are the programs created to welcome and engage everyone. Please take the opportunity to read more about these in the articles by our talented clergy and staff.

As construction begins in Seattle and our capital project takes shape, I am incredibly grateful for the eternal support of staff, clergy, lay leadership and the capital campaign committee, who have helped bring this vision to life. You can read the latest updates on

the campaign in this issue of Tidings (page 24) and visit our new microsite to learn more about how you can get involved. We know this year will be different at Temple, and we feel very privileged to have a two-campus community to celebrate important moments and holidays together.

The board continues to partner with Paula as she settles into “all things Temple,” getting to know Temple’s operations, programs, members, and staff. I look forward to seeing you all at upcoming events, and at the Annual Meeting in May!

Warmly,

Rabbi’s Corner : Embracing Change

Change is both a challenge and an opportunity. It inspires us, forces us to grow, and is happening each and every day. Even as we acknowledge its inevitability, change often fills us with trepidation. Given that spring is (hopefully) right around the corner and we will soon be celebrating the stories of Purim and Passover, the emergence of springtime offers helpful insights into the nature of change and the choices it demands of us. Through these narratives and natural cycles, we can explore the feelings surrounding change, the need to embrace it, and the hidden opportunities that moments like this hold for transformation.

So much of our tradition and history is based on the need to adapt to rapid change. For Esther, the news of Haman’s evil plot shatters her new normal as Queen of Persia and she is forced to adapt. She cannot remain indifferent to the plight of her people and she must respond to the call of change and rise to the moment! For the Passover story, something as simple and seemingly mundane as not having time to let the bread rise demonstrates the value of being willing and able to adapt to a rapidly changing reality—a value that has served the Jewish people over the course of 3000 years!

Arguably the two greatest moments in Jewish history, that became catalysts for change and innovation, were the destruction of the first and second temples. While these were moments of great turmoil and pain, they became the moments that solidified Jewish peoplehood in ways our ancestors could only imagine. We are here and Jewish today, in large part, because of their ingenuity.

In all of these examples, we see that change is not merely an external event but a deeply internal process. It forces us to confront who we are, what we value, and how we wish to move forward. And in moments of change, we, as our ancestors did, often face three choices. The first is to resist change entirely, by clinging to what was and refusing to adapt, pretending change is not happening and hoping it will resolve itself. The

second is to give up entirely, throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. The third—and most constructive—is to reimagine Judaism not as it is, but as it can be.

This year is a year of great change, yes, but so was last year and the years before that. The question isn’t if there will be change, but rather, how we will change. Imagine if our ancestors had just stayed in Egypt, if Esther had simply done nothing, or God forbid if the Babylonian and Roman exiles were simply just the end of Judaism…

Rabbi Norman Hirsh, a member of our great Temple, contributed his prose “Becoming” to our prayerbook Mishkan T’filah, highlighting the importance of opportunity and change. He wrote: “Once or twice in a lifetime a man or woman may choose a radical leaving, having heard ‘Lech l’cha – Go forth.’ God disturbs us toward our destiny by hard events and by freedom’s now urgent voice which explodes and confirms who we are. We don’t like leaving, but God loves becoming.”

As we struggle to embrace the discomfort of change’s inevitability, may we find the moments of growth and renewal to be sources of pride, joy, and opportunity—and may we face these moments with courage and a shared sense of purpose, knowing that together, as a sacred community, there is no challenge we cannot overcome.

Meet the Temple Team

Say “hello” and get to know more members of our team who play a key role in making Temple go round!

Shalom, my name is Merav and I’ve been the Operations Director since June 2024. I was born and raised in Haifa, Israel. I am married to Allon and have four children: Tomer, Yarden, Yael, and Elad. Since moving to the USA, I have worked in various positions within the Jewish community. I love working with a team of passionate and creative people who have a mission to make the world a better place and follow the Jewish principles of caring for each other and the greater community.

I’m Elisa and I’m excited to join the team as a Senior Accountant. I grew up in a town near Venice, Italy, and began my accounting career in Germany. After moving to the U.S. in 2012, I earned my Accounting degree from the University of Arizona. I love the beauty and outdoor activities of the Pacific Northwest. Recently, I returned from a hiking adventure in the northern Italian/Swiss Alps, where I reconnected with family. My experience in multilingual environments has helped me adapt to diverse settings, and I look forward to contributing to this wonderful community filled with individuals with varied backgrounds.

Q: Which famous Seattle-born musician played their first gig in Temple De Hirsch Sinai’s basement on February 20, 1959?

(answer on page 19)

Honorable Menschions

Mazel tov to Temple member Ilana Cone Kennedy on being appointed as the new CEO of the Holocaust Center for Humanity. According to the Holocaust Center of Humanity, Ilana has been a dedicated member of the team since 2003 and has proven herself to be an outstanding leader, educator, and advocate. The CEO search process involved reaching out to a wide-range of candidates and careful consideration of their qualifications. After in-depth interviews, it was clear that Ilana’s passion, years of experience, and vision for the future made her the perfect fit. Congratulations on the well-earned position, Ilana!

Yasher koach to Randy Turner on their participation in the RAC Teen Justice Fellowship. In the fellowship, teens learned community organizing skills, how to combat mental health stigma, how to share their story and have relational conversations with others, and how mental health impacts other issues they care about. In Randy’s words: “The RAC Fellowship was a great resource in teaching me how to organize community events, from big to little. It was a very informative experience and it felt nice being able to discuss important issues in a comfortable Jewish space.”

Kol hakavod to Sarah Quint (pictured with Director of Education Stacey Delcau) for her persistent volunteering and leadership at Temple. Most recently, she greatly helped with our Chanukah Celebration, and she is currently working with our staff to get ready for Purim coming up in March.

Todah rabah to Dingfelder’s Delicatessen for showing up for and feeding the Temple community during the power outage caused by November’s windstorm. We appreciate your constant support. Thank you!

Fresh Voices: Insights from Our New Members

In the vibrant tapestry of our Temple community, both new and longtime members play crucial roles in fostering a spirit of unity, growth, and continuity. New members bring fresh perspectives, ideas, and energy, invigorating traditions with their unique backgrounds and experiences. Meanwhile, longtime members serve as the backbone of the community, sharing wisdom, history, and a deeprooted sense of belonging. Together, they create a dynamic environment where traditions are honored, and innovation is embraced, ensuring that Temple remains a welcoming and nurturing space for all. In previous Temple Tidings’, we’ve heard from longtime members about what keeps them coming back year after year. In this issue, we asked four new member families about their experiences so far. This is what they said…

Who or what has made you feel embraced in the Temple community since joining?

It’s so sweet to see our children get excited to see their older cousins, Noe and Silas, at Sunday School. Shoutout to those two for being awesome big cousins and Madrichim. In Talia’s words, “I love them a lot and love getting to spend time with them.”

-Audrey Soroka and Ben Nakamura

What have you loved most about joining our Temple community?

The thing I have most loved about joining TDHS has been the community. Last year I went to High Holiday services on my own, but everyone around me welcomed me into their circles and reminded me that I am now a part of this amazing TDHS family!

-Claire Fite

Tell us about a memorable moment for you [and your family] since joining Temple.

My most memorable experiences since returning to the TDHS community as a young adult member have been during my time as a Bridge Family Religion School teacher. I have gotten to talk to my students about important topics in Judaism and have fun at the same time. Sunday school was an integral part of my Temple experience growing up, and it has been such a joy to return as an adult. Shout out to the BFRS Bellevue crew!!

-Valerie Kearns

What have you loved most about joining our Temple community?

We’ve lived in Seattle for a long time, but this was the year our son Elliot got excited about getting in touch with his heritage. And now our family life is enriched by more of what it means to be Jewish and to feel part of a larger community. Whether it’s weekly school and services, holidays, or special events in Seattle and Bellevue, Temple De Hirsch Sinai is always offering something new, fun, and meaningful to our lives.

- Ian Todd and his son Elliot

JRM Teachers Participate in New Professional Development Program

Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool is pleased to share that we have six teachers participating in an exciting new program, ElevatEd. Four are involved as Educators, and two as Mentors.

One Educator from each of our classrooms (except the Owls) is enrolled in ElevatEd. We are delighted that our teachers have the chance to have professional development and mentorship opportunities as part of this program! We are looking forward to growing and learning and for our JRM students to directly benefit from this experience.

This past December, the Seattle cohort had a holiday party and learned about different ways of bringing Chanukah into the classroom, including through music, learning, books, and art.

We recently made jello! The Leopards are enjoying learning new cooking skills, which are concepts for lifelong use.

About ElevatEd: This initiative is a collaborative effort between the JCC Association of North America, the Jewish Federations of North America, and the Union for Reform Judaism. Together, we are committed to elevating you and your community because your school plays a vital role in nurturing the infinite potential of children, their families, and the Jewish community. Through this investment, and with your partnership, we will significantly expand the capacity and reach of this powerful educational experience to create the environment for children and families to root deeply and grow into a strong, connected, diverse Jewish ecosystem.

Families with Young Children at Temple

We LOVE seeing families with young children come together to celebrate, learn, and create lasting Jewish traditions. Whether we’re singing familiar songs at Friday Night Lights together, sharing the joy of holidays with Chai Lights boxes, or meeting new friends at Babies B’yachad, our programs are all about connection—between parents, kids, and our broader Temple community.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to offer even more opportunities to engage and grow together:

• FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: A kid-friendly dinner, usually with crafts and a few fun surprises, followed by a musical, familyfriendly service. Upcoming dates: April 4 (Bellevue), May 2 (Seattle), June 6 (Bellevue)

• CHAI LIGHTS - A SPARK OF PASSOVER AT HOME: Take-home learning boxes curated just for Temple toddlers and their grown-ups. Available for purchase in late March!

• SHALOM SPROUTS SUNDAYS: Pre-K/toddler class that meets monthly on Sundays during BFRS.

1. We have 320 students across K-12th grade.

2. We have 18 Confirmands meeting monthly to discuss big Jewish questions like “Why be Jewish?” and “For whom are we responsible?”

3. We have 72 madrichim across Sunday and Hebrew School programming who assist our teachers and students in the classroom and learn valuable leadership skills.

5. This past November we held a blood drive at the Bellevue campus: 17 units of blood were donated and 6 of the donors were first-time donors!

6. In November, 36 of our 3rd and 4th graders traveled to Camp Waskowitz in North Bend to celebrate Shabbat together for their annual Shabbaton/retreat. They played outside in the rain, had a chance to create Shabbat art, learn about the importance of rest, and build community.

7. In the fall, our 678 (middle school) retreat traveled to a beautiful new location, Camp Seymour in Port Orchard, Washington. It was a great success with 24 participants and 5 staff members, including teen leaders.

8. On December 15th, both campuses joyfully celebrated 72 students new to our religious school during our annual Consecration ceremonies. Each student was invited to the bimah, where they received a heartfelt blessing from the Rabbis, a special certificate, and a gift to commemorate the start of their Torah learning journey.

9. Our teen leaders (TDSY Interns) planned an amazing retreat/Shabbaton in December where 40 other teens joined in on the fun!

12. Our 8th graders raised tzedakah funds for the LA Fire Department by making and selling keychains when their trip to LA was canceled in January.

Shabbat and holiday celebrations were a big focus of our fall semester in BFRS. Our 3rd graders learned about the story of creation from the Torah and then assembled Shabbat boxes to take home to support their home celebrations of Shabbat. They gathered together with our rabbis to celebrate the ending of Shabbat with a Havdalah service.

13. Our 7th graders participated in our Tiyulim Program (journeys/experiences program) funded by the SAMIS Foundation. During the first semester, they visited the Seattle Mikvah, MoPOP, Ballard P-Patch (a community gardening program), and the Green Lake Community Center, and learned about Israel in order to embody our Jewish values in the community.

Outreach to Members at Times of Loss, Bereavement, and Mourning

Sacred Journeys volunteers reach out to the Temple community:

• With a condolence call when there is a death in the family. With a follow-up call a few months after the family death.

At the time of the first anniversary of the death:

• Send a yahrzeit candle in the mail, send a personal note, and make a phone call to family members.

We sponsor Kever Avot, the annual Cemetery Memorial Service.

Please let us know if you would like to join us as a volunteer: contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 693-3047.

Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys, and by donations from Temple members.

Temple wants to help find homes for Jewish ritual objects so they can be lovingly used. We have a small lending library of Judaica available to members.

Reach out to Rabbi Speizer, at kspeizer@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 693-3046 to talk/text, if you’re interested in putting something to use OR if you have something collecting dust that you’d like to pass on to someone who will use it.

Meet the Sacred Journeys Volunteers

Hello from Sacred Journeys! Our volunteers continue to be committed to connecting with our congregants at important moments in their lives. One way we connect is by reaching out to offer our condolences when there is a death in the family and by marking their yahrzeit. Our committee continues to grow and we would like to spotlight two of our members: Corrine Stroum and Ilana Cone Kennedy.

CORRINE STROUM

I joined Temple through the Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool in 2017 when I had my first daughter. With my second daughter now in kindergarten, we have a lot of lifecycle events still ahead of us: bat mitzvahs, for example.

I joined SJ out of reverence for the Jewish emphasis on lifecycle. Our rituals around grief and mourning can bring structure and comfort after a loss. I’m here to support the Temple community during these transitions.

Corrine Stroum with her husband Zach, and daughters Miriam (7) and Esther (5).

ILANA CONE KENNEDY

As a member of TDHS since 2007, I’ve seen and experienced firsthand the meaningful work of Sacred Journeys. My friend and colleague Laurie Warshal Cohen invited me to volunteer with Sacred Journeys and it was at this time that I really saw the impact of the work. Losing a loved one is so terribly difficult and I’m honored to be a part of doing even something little to help.

Ilana Cone Kennedy with her family – Erez (18), Lilah (16), and husband Jon –from their recent visit to the Grand Canyon in December.

If you are interested in volunteering with Sacred Journeys, please reach out to Jennifer Phillips, at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org, who will connect you to us, Rachel Stoner and Stephanie Carmel, Committee Co-chairs!

New Caraco Family Innovation Fund Creates New Opportunities at Temple

Temple is much more than just a community: it’s a sacred partnership. From our rabbinic leaders to our passionate and dedicated members, we all play an important role in supporting our congregation.

In that spirit, we’re pleased to announce a new initiative that will shape Temple’s programming for generations to come. In partnership with Rabbi Weiner, the Caraco family has established the new Caraco Family Innovation Fund, which will support innovative programs and other opportunities at Temple that respond to the dynamic nature of the contemporary American Jewish community. As an endowed fund, the gift ensures that future generations will benefit in perpetuity.

We are deeply grateful to Harry Caraco for his leadership, foresight, and generosity. He shared these words about the new endeavor:

I joined Temple when my grandparents and parents joined, 63 years ago. I was a teenager then, and ever since Temple has been like family. It’s who I am - and connects me to my heritage, my community, and what I believe spiritually. Now my kids and grandkids are involved, and Temple is their home, too.

I have been very fortunate to have been involved in Temple for decades, and now it’s my time to give back. I hope the Caraco Family Innovation Fund will give me and my family the opportunity to partner with Rabbi Weiner and future rabbis to fund special events, speakers, or other projects, whatever is needed for future generations that Temple couldn’t otherwise afford.”

The Caraco Family Innovation Fund will provide the resources necessary for our community to respond to the dynamic changes and growth in the Seattle Jewish community—one in which innovation and entrepreneurship are foundational.

Honoring Our Community: A Memorable Shabbat Service Kicks Off

Temple’s Historic Year 2025

What a historic year 2025 will be for Temple! Thank you to the more than 200 members of all ages who attended our celebratory Shabbat service in the Alhadeff Sanctuary on January 10. It was wonderful to hear tunes from decades ago, to read memories members wrote for our time capsule, and to greet old and new friends at the oneg.

Here are a few headlines about what you can expect in the months ahead:

• As of January 27, we have raised over $21 million from our generous community. While the campaign has never been a secret, we look forward to officially launching our “public phase” by Spring. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, visit our dedicated website for more information at renewcampaign-tdhs.org. We will share regular updates there.

• Throughout the year, you will have opportunities to share a message or memory to be included in the time capsule that will be shared with future generations.

• Our construction project continues to be on budget and on time. By the time you read this letter, demolition may already be underway.

• While the 16th Avenue side of the Seattle campus will be closed for the renovation, we will take full

advantage of the Religion School Building, both for Bridge Family Religion School and also worship services, which we expect to hold approximately twice monthly in the Annex. At the same time, for Seattle “regulars,” this is a great opportunity to worship at our Bellevue campus.

• Planning is underway to hold the High Holy Days in Bellevue and also off-site in Seattle. The location will be announced well in advance.

As always, please reach out to us for any information, to ask your questions, or to find a way to get involved.

With gratitude,

Aaron Alhadeff, Campaign Co-Chair aalhadeff@elttaes.com

Laurie Minsk, Campaign Co-Chair lminsk@msn.com

Don Loeb, Honorary Campaign Chair

Capital Campaign Honor Roll as of Jan 27, 2025

Temple acknowledges and thanks the following members and community friends whose commitments to the capital campaign have brought our vision to renew the Seattle campus closer to a reality. An alphabetical list will continue to be published in future editions of Tidings. Toward the completion of the campaign, donors will be listed by giving level, unless they prefer otherwise.

Temple is profoundly grateful to The Loeb Family for their visionary investment in Temple’s future.
