Greetings from Our Executive Director

I am deeply honored and grateful to step into the role of Executive Director at Temple. The warm welcome I have received from the Board, staff, Temple members, and community partners has been truly heartwarming and inspiring. Your kindness and support have made this transition incredibly smooth and joyful.

As we embark on this new chapter together, I am filled with excitement about the year ahead. Not only will we get to watch the transformation of our historic Seattle campus into a beautifully welcoming new space, but we also have a wonderful array of programs and initiatives planned that I believe will enrich our community and strengthen our bonds. From spiritual services and educational opportunities to social events and community outreach, there is so much to look forward to.

I am committed to working closely with all of you to ensure our synagogue continues to be a place of worship, learning, and meaningful connection for generations to come. Your input and participation are invaluable, and I encourage you to share your ideas and feedback with me as we move forward together.

Please allow me to thank you in advance for your patience with me as I learn all of your names and match those names with faces. I’d also like to extend an especially big thank you to those of you who have anticipated my memory lapses and introduced

yourselves each time we’ve met! It may take me a while, but we’ll get there. And remember, if you see me wandering the halls looking lost (which has happened a few times), feel free to point me in the right direction—or just join me for a coffee!

Thank you once again for your warm welcome and for entrusting me with this important role. I look forward to a year of growth, joy, and shared accomplishments.

With gratitude and anticipation,

Letter from Our Board President

Fall at Temple is always a time of gathering, from the start of the High Holy Day season to the return of our Religion School students and our annual new member consecration at Simchat

Torah. This year was especially meaningful for me: we commemorated the one-year anniversary of October 7th, supported our partners at the Washington State Jewish Historical Society by hosting the Confronting Hate Together exhibit, and held our last High Holy Day services in Seattle before our campus renovation begins this winter. In times of joy and sorrow alike, our community is our greatest strength.

As winter approaches, there will be even more opportunities for us to come together as a Temple family. In the coming months, we’ll welcome several guest speakers, including Shalom Hartman Institute’s Tal Becker; we’ll celebrate Chanukah together in a multitude of ways; and we’ll strengthen our bonds with our friends at FAME Church over MLK Weekend.

Temple is serving more people with more programs than ever before, and that can be a challenge as our operating costs continue to increase. I am immensely grateful to the many Temple members who have already supported Temple with a gift to the Annual Campaign. If you have not yet made a gift and would like to learn more, you can find more information in this issue of Tidings on page 20.

Fall on the Board also begins the process of nominations. As I start to think about nearing the end of my presidency, I’m more committed than ever to ensuring that our leadership is strong as we look to the future. Our Board is well-represented by trustees who are part of multi-generational families, as well as trustees who are first-generation and planting roots here. The strength of our Board is a mirror of the strength of our congregation.

As always, it is an honor to serve such a strong and committed community. I look forward to seeing you this fall and winter!

Warmly,

Q: Which renowned civil rights activist did Temple host in 1961? (answer on page 13)

Rabbi’s Corner : Thriving in Limbo

I’m writing this column in the days after Yom Kippur, as the air chills considerably, the leaves turn multiple shades of orange, and the Presidential Election is a mere three weeks away. It is a time of transition and one fraught with fears and deep concern for the fate of our country. By the time you read this, I pray that we will know who will serve our nation in leadership over the next four years, and that there will be no violence and little drama accompanying the passage of the presidency.

But in the broader, seasonal sense, fall implicitly conveys a sense of change and uncertainty. Particularly for our agrarian ancestors, gathering in that final harvest and storing enough resources for the winter was literally a matter of life and death. And so, in classic, Jewish fashion, urgent and visceral human need was elevated with sanctity and greater purpose.

The Festival of Sukkot celebrates both the final harvest and the accompanying pilgrimage to the Temple for offerings and the historic moment in our sacred epic when our people had to put their faith in God to protect their most elemental needs. The temporary and transient sukkah is a symbol of both the fragility of existence and the hopes that God will provide. The holiday thus integrates both a sense of anxiety and possibility, helping to equip us with the inspiration and resilience to face and journey through life’s inevitable uncertainties.

Beyond our prayers for the stability of our nation, there is much to celebrate within our Temple family in these coming months in between. Despite the ironic impression that many have that things settle down considerably after the High Holidays, we are ramping up with our usual array of programs, life cycles, community gatherings, and other opportunities to connect. A number of our new staff members have now experienced the holidays for the first time and are diving into the

frenetic pace of “normal” Temple life. And of course, our imminent Capital Remodel commencing in February will dramatically transform our Seattle facility to better serve our current Temple family into the next generation and beyond.

It is traditional to read the Book of Ecclesiastes/Sefer Quohelet during Sukkot. The rabbis were uncomfortable with its tone of Hellenistic skepticism and concession to life’s vagaries. But they understood that it embraced uncertainty as much as it offered solace to contend with it. After the author (traditionally King Solomon) lists all of the unique and regal experiences he lived through and dismisses the things we often associate with success as so much “vanity,” the final passage offers an inspiring coda. After affirming that it is good to find pleasure and happiness in God’s creation, we learn that the ultimate lens through which we should see our lives is that we should, “Be in awe of God and follow the commandments.”

On one level, that might seem an obvious and rote Jewish answer to everything. But on a deeper level, it reminds us to live by our core and most deeply held ideals as the prism through which we chart our course through life’s journey. If we do, then we can truly not only live in limbo but also thrive in limbo.

Our Evolving Team

We would like to introduce you to more new(er) hires! Here are some friendly faces you’ll be seeing around Temple this winter.

NAOMI SCHAPIRO

JRM TEACHER

Hi, my name is Naomi Schapiro and I am so excited to be working at JRM! I am from Bellingham, grew up at Congregation Beth Israel, and got a journalism degree from WWU. I have always loved working with kids, and after a year of working at a boutique PR firm, I decided to get my Master’s in Teaching. I have been substitute teaching in Bellingham since I graduated in January, and just recently moved to Bellevue this month. In my free time, I love exploring new coffee shops and restaurants (especially now that I live in a new city!), going for walks, and reading lots of books. Looking forward to getting to know all of the JRM families and getting to teach in a Jewish setting!

DANIEL FYFFE

Cemetery Caretaker

My name is Daniel, and I’m the new Cemetery Caretaker. I am excited about the opportunity to make the cemetery grounds shine. I started working in the funeral industry in 2023 at Cedar Lawns Memorial Park. I started working in 1992 and have worn many hats. My most notable careers have been in culinary arts and construction. I spent 15 years cooking in iconic restaurants such as the Metropolitan Grill and will always love to cook. For 12 years, I worked for Olympian precast, and you can find concrete that I mixed throughout the region. I earned a degree in Environmental Science from Western Washington University. I love native plants and hope to incorporate them into our landscaping at the cemetery. When I’m not working, I enjoy playing the bass guitar and reading novels or poetry. You can often find me in parks, public libraries, and around the ship canal.

Tikkun Olam Fund Grows Thanks to Rebecca Miller

Many thanks to Rebecca Miller for her incredible work raising money for Temple at Microsoft in October.

From Rebecca:

“Between my daughter starting kindergarten this year and the events of October 7th forever changing me, I recently joined TDHS. As a Microsoft employee, we have an incredible company match charity program for fulltime employees. Every October is Microsoft’s GIVE month, and this year, I organized my office’s month-long Bake Sale with the proceeds going to TDHS’ Tikkun Olam Fund. As of October 15, we’ve already raised over $1,500 (Microsoft matches 1:1 each dollar donated, which is an incredible benefit).”

Ringing in the Jewish New Year –and New School Year – at JRM

Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool got off to a great start in September! Teachers switched rooms and set up classrooms the week of August 12-16. Children moved up to their new rooms starting on August 19th and we welcomed back our part-time friends on September 3rd. Since then, our students have been adjusting to new routines, making friends with new students, and of course, learning!

The last few weeks’ curriculum has focused on Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year. There was apple stamping, apple, honey, and pomegranate tasting, shofar blowing, and apple volcanos (STEM). The Sand Cats decorated their own shofars and then made New Year’s cards for loved ones in the shape of pomegranates. We even got to see the Torah receive a fresh white mantle for the New Year during Tot Shabbat!

Speaking of Tot Shabbat, each Friday, we gather as a community to sing songs, light candles, and experience ritual practice. The children are learning songs and they all have their favorites. Once a month, we welcome guests, and I know that is super special for the children who have family join us. We recently had a “goodbye” Shabbat for our teachers Laura and Robin, who have both left JRM for volunteer opportunities abroad. Rabbi Weiner opened the Torah cabinet and said the Traveler’s Prayer for them – it was very special.

The start of school always brings new staff and this fall was no exception! We have welcomed the following teachers in the last couple of weeks: Shalyska, Naomi, Jacob, and Madison, and we still need to hire one or two more. With new staff comes the need for team-building and learning best practices, so we will focus our next couple of monthly staff meetings on these things. Overall, it has been a busy fall at JRM Preschool!

BFRS Kicks-off The Year With Maccabiah Games

The Bridge Family Religion School year kicked off on Sunday, September 22nd with Maccabiah (color war) Games! With so many new and returning families, we believe it is essential to help both our kids and parents feel connected and a part of our larger BFRS and TDHS community, and we love kicking the year off with fun family programming!

In cooperation with Camp Kalsman, our students and parents were split into red, green, blue, and purple teams to compete in community building games such as four-way capture the flag, one-armed paper chain competitions, freeze dance, meet your teacher match game, and many more fun activities. Madrichim (high school teaching assistants) led the activities while teachers were grade-level captains.

“My son was feeling a little nervous to start Sunday School and after the games all he could talk about was meeting his teacher, and how fun Temple is!”

We ended the morning with a Maccabathon where everyone participated in a team relay race and the GREEN TEAM wound up as the winner! And the highlight for many was when our four team captains got “pied” in the face with whipped cream.

First-year BFRS teacher Tracy Mayclin (2nd gradeSeattle) shared: “There was so much energy from the students, families, teachers, and madrichim! Meeting outside of the classroom with games to play gave us a chance to build community and create excitement for the school year.”

Erin Haber, parent of an incoming kindergartner, shared: “We loved getting to participate in the Maccabiah games! My son was feeling a little nervous to start Sunday School and after the games all he could talk about was meeting his teacher, and how fun Temple is!”

With a great beginning to our programming year, we look forward to all that is to come!

Welcome Corps Update on Marling, our Resettled HIAS Newcomer

Now in the US for over six months, Marling is flourishing. Her initial job proved to be unreliable in terms of hours, so she accepted a position in our very own JRM Preschool kitchen, in charge of meals and snacks for the children, in addition to other supportive tasks. JRM’s director, Jessie Cunningham, reports on how Marling is doing:

“The kitchen has never been cleaner or more organized than it is now. She is learning our routines and getting to know teachers and children. We are mastering ways of communicating together. She is friendly and dependable. She has started experimenting with baking snacks for the kids using a protein-rich baking mix.”

Marling’s perspective is similarly sunny. She loves how kind everyone is, loves the children, and appreciates having the ability to take initiative in the kitchen as she gets more confident. It’s a win-win for everyone and we are lucky to have her.

Right now, Marling is focused on efforts to reunify with her eight-year-old son, who is currently with her parents in Nicaragua. The process is proving uniquely complex, but the Welcome Circle is pursuing all possible avenues to try to help.

New Sponsorship in the Works

If you attended Friday night services on November 17, 2023, you met 28-year-old Bushra Naeemi, an Afghan refugee, who spoke about her experience fleeing the Taliban and stressed the importance of

helping legal refugees get settled in a community. Bushra is currently working for Jewish Family and Community Services in Tampa, Florida, helping Afghan refugees adjust to life in the United States. She is a sweet and impressive young woman, and an asset to her new country.

As the Welcome Corps program now allows applicants to identify specific refugees to sponsor, our committee was so charmed by Bushra that we decided to try to sponsor the remainder of her family to come to the US. They are currently trapped in Pakistan. Under the terms of the Welcome Corps, if and when the family is approved, they will initially come to Seattle, so we thought it would be helpful to give the congregation a brief introduction to Bushra and her family.

At Temple last November, Bushra spoke of the first time she met American soldiers handing out candy on the streets of Kabul. She was around six years old at the time and had recently hit an age where she was suddenly required to dress differently and act differently than boys, after years of playing outside freely with her younger brother. The sudden restrictions greatly upset her, and when she met the American soldiers, she remembers understanding, even at that young age, that there was hope that things could change for her. Sure enough, as the years passed, Bushra was able to graduate college and get a job, and she felt that every year, things were getting incrementally better. Until they weren’t, as we all know.

When Kabul fell, all American University students got an email from the school instructing them to destroy every piece of evidence that they had attended the university, which the Taliban described as a place “where wolves were trained in sheepskin clothes” against Islam. Bushra got very lucky and was able

to leave Afghanistan relatively quickly, initially to a refugee camp in Poland, then eventually to America, where she lived for six months with a former Temple member and her husband in DC, before getting a job as a data analyst with Pfizer in Tampa, Florida. As mentioned previously, she now works with Jewish Family and Community Services of Greater Tampa. Bushra loves America and all things American. She has learned how to drive, bought herself a car, and has finally felt free to learn to love cooking, after spending all her life in Afghanistan refusing to learn to cook so that she wouldn’t be sought after as a bride before she was ready.

Bushra has other siblings who have escaped to the US or Canada, but eight members of her family were not able to escape as easily. As the Taliban increased the pressure on them, they fled to the only country they could enter, which was Pakistan. Life for Afghan refugees in Pakistan is not easy. The government does not allow Afghans to work, nor is there any form of welfare to help them eat, resulting in a pretty dire existence. The family is in a small apartment that has been raided by the police, who steal anything of value that they can find, and threaten to deport the family back to Afghanistan.

A brief introduction to these family members:

Bushra’s father and mother not only ensured that all their children, whether male or female, received a college education, but also paid for at least one of their daughters-in-law to get a university degree. For around 20 years prior to the fall of Kabul, Mr. Naeemi was working for a de-mining NGO that worked on removing mines planted by the Taliban. The organization was largely funded by the UN and the US State Department, which made him a target when the Taliban took over.

Bushra’s sister, Masooma, is a civil engineer who was working for the City of Kabul prior to the Taliban takeover and has four children, ages four to 11. As an educated, employed woman, she received threats from the Taliban with respect to herself and her daughters.

Bushra’s younger brother, Sameer, who had recently graduated from American University at the time Kabul fell, is a target by virtue of that association.

Note: All members of a Welcome Corps sponsor group have to be US citizens or green card holders. The two family members in the US, Bushra and her oldest brother, are unable to sponsor them because they do not yet have green cards (the process takes years). That brother was an employee at the US Embassy when Kabul fell and now works in the accounting department at Amazon in Northern Virginia.

The Naeemi family are strongly pro-Western and believe in civil society and the rule of law. They are educated and will make productive American citizens, just like Bushra and her brother are in the process of becoming, and we are hopeful that they will get approved soon to come here. We will keep you updated as things progress.

Support Temple’s 5785 Annual Campaign –Because We’re Family

Temple has big plans for the coming year. As we continue to navigate the conflict in Israel and the implications of rising antisemitism, we are committed to providing a safe space, both physically and spiritually, for our community to come together. With the significant growth we’ve experienced in both membership and school enrollments this fall, we look forward to expanding our programs – providing more social opportunities for young adults and families, hosting more distinguished speakers, and fostering a stronger, more vibrant community through our Connections @ Temple program.

Your support of our Annual Campaign is crucial during this period of transformation, as it enables us to offer free programming to all and allows more members to join our congregation regardless of means. If you have already donated to our 5785 Annual Campaign, thank you.

We encourage you to choose to support a fund that speaks to your personal values:

THE HIGH HOLY DAYS FUND provides Temple with maximum flexibility, engages caring clergy and staff to provide innovative, in-person, and virtual worship and education for all ages, and helps pay for the costs of technology and enhanced security during a period of growing antisemitism. The fund also makes it possible to continue the tradition of welcoming everyone, regardless of their circumstances.

THE JENNIFER ROSEN MEADE PRESCHOOL FUND offers young families starting their Jewish journeys access to the highest-quality early childhood education and childcare in the region.

Thank you to this year’s matchmakers:

The Alhadeff Family

The Bridge Family

The Loeb Family

Laurie Minsk and Jerry Dunietz

Donna Richman and Mike Ehrenberg

Karen and Gary Schwartz

If you are part of our valued Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool community, we invite you to participate in our Chai Five Campaign, a special fundraising campaign for JRM families to donate to preschool programs throughout the month of November.

If you work for one of the many local employers who match donations, you can double the impact of your gift if you choose the Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Fund. Ask your HR team for more information.

For more information or questions about the Annual Campaign, please reach out to me directly at (206) 492-5260 or esilverstein@tdhs-nw.org.

Help us close out the 5785 Annual Campaign with a gift on December 3rd – Tzedakah Tuesday!

Capital Campaign Update

It’s already been a busy fall as our community prepares to bring Temple’s Seattle campus vision to life in 2025! Here are some headlines:

We are excited for construction to start and anticipate getting approval from the City of Seattle to begin work in February. Construction will last approximately a year, during which time Temple’s administrative offices and the school building will remain open. We will miss one High Holy Days season and we will announce an alternate location for High Holy Days services in 2025.

We are on track to raise $20 million by the end of this calendar year, toward the stretch goal of $22.5 million approved by the congregation last June.

We are finalizing a short-term bridge loan that will allow us to move forward while we continue to fundraise and to repay the loan with pledges and gifts as they are paid over time.

After sharing information about the new plaza in the August Tidings, we are excited to share in this issue some images of our foyer and Alhadeff Sanctuary transformation. We can’t wait for Temple to welcome members and the greater community into beautiful, flexible, and inclusive new spaces that will serve generations to come.

With gratitude,

Aaron Alhadeff, Campaign Co-Chair aalhadeff@elttaes.com

Laurie Minsk, Campaign Co-Chair lminsk@msn.com

Don Loeb, Honorary Campaign Chair

For more information or to make a gift, please contact:

Barb Maduell, Senior Director of Capital Campaign and Major Gifts bmaduell@tdhs-nw.org

The Foyer

An inviting place to gather, not just to pass through

What’s new:

• Main entrance security vestibule with protective glass doors

• Sanctuary portal to demarcate entry into our sacred space

• Comfortable, easily moveable couches, tables, and chairs

• Modern men’s, women’s, and all-gender restrooms

• New catering kitchen and ample storage behind the foyer

• Audiovisual upgrades to enhance educational and social programs

All images shown are conceptual renderings. Final design and finishes may vary.

The Alhadeff Sanctuary

Redefining majesty to serve new ways of worship

What’s new:

• Repairs and acoustic improvements to our iconic dome

• Flattened floor with comfortable, flexible seating in the front, and new fixed seating in the back

• Moveable panels dividing the front half of the sanctuary from the back half, and custom lighting armature, both to create a sense of scale for smaller gatherings

• AV upgrades to enhance in-person and virtual experiences

• Accessibility lift to the Bimah

Capital Campaign Honor Roll

as of Oct 16, 2024

Temple acknowledges and thanks the following members and community friends whose early commitments to the capital campaign have brought our vision to renew the Seattle campus closer to a reality. An alphabetical list will continue to be published in future editions of Tidings. Toward the completion of the campaign, donors will be listed by giving level, unless they prefer otherwise.

Temple is profoundly grateful to The Loeb Family for their visionary investment in Temple’s future.

Outreach to Members at Times of Loss, Bereavement, and Mourning

Sacred Journeys volunteers reach out to the Temple community:

• With a condolence call when there is a death in the family.

• With a follow-up call a few months after the family death.

At the time of the first anniversary of the death:

• Send a yahrzeit candle in the mail, send a personal note, and make a phone call to family members.

We sponsor Kever Avot, the annual Cemetery Memorial Service.

Please let us know if you would like to join us as a volunteer: contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 693-3047.

Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys, and by donations from Temple members.
