Letter from Our Board President

Temple family,

I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer. Our TDHS organizational calendar runs from July through June, and as we begin a new year and I begin serving as Board President, I wanted to share a few words of introduction for those that I don’t know yet and a few comments about our top priorities for the coming year.

I moved to Seattle from Boston in 2004 with my wife Donna, our now adult children, Henry and Madeline, and our golden retriever, Lucy. For baseball fans, we left Massachusetts on the day that Nomar Garciaparra was traded to Los Angeles, and I was responsible for moving my born-and-raised-in-Boston family away just months before the 86-year curse was lifted. Each Yom Kippur, I feel the need to add, “And for the sin which I committed before thee for moving my family just before the Red Sox won.” I hope they will forgive me one day soon. Of course, in the spirit of Talmudic debate, I could argue that our leaving enabled the curse to be broken.

Commuting to Seattle for work before we moved, I was given two tasks – find soccer teams and find a temple. We came to TDHS on one of our first weekends in Seattle, and when Rabbi Weiner prompted us to meet someone new in the 360-degree circle around us and wish them a “Shabbat Shalom,” we met a family that to this day remains among our family’s closest friends. Instantly, TDHS became an important part of making Seattle home.

Henry and Madee had their B’nai Mitzvah at Temple – Madee in a blizzard in 2008 where Rabbi

Weiner made it clear that nothing would prevent him from getting to Seattle to officiate. He even loaned her his guitar mid-service when she broke a string. Donna also had an adult Bat Mitzvah at TDHS, fulfilling a longtime dream and experiencing the blessing of studying for it with Rabbi Weiner’s late father, Martin.

Temple has been an important part of creating community and celebrating joy for our family. Over twenty-plus years in Seattle, TDHS has also been there for us in more difficult times of both personal loss and the growing challenges faced by the Jewish community globally. When approached about joining the Temple board, it was an easy “yes” – I am happy for the privilege to serve TDHS and to do my part to help ensure that Temple can provide the same anchor for our community for years to come that it has for our family.

It has been a pleasure to serve with Don Loeb, Aaron Alhadeff, and most recently, Alison Handlin as our President. They’ve set an amazing example and a high bar that I hope to meet. Serving on the board, with such an incredible clergy team led by Rabbi Weiner, is an honor and a privilege. Temple is also blessed with a very capable administrative team that ensures

we deliver the right experiences for everyone in our community. With the Seattle campus renovation in full swing, this is an incredibly exciting time at Temple.

For the last several years, I have served as Board Treasurer. As a result, I have a strong focus on ensuring that we protect the financial sustainability of Temple. Our members have been and continue to be incredibly generous. We will prioritize continuing to deliver great experiences on both sides of the lake while we finish construction, and we’ll look forward to celebrating the reopening of a revitalized Seattle campus next summer. We will also explore continuing to improve the facilities in Bellevue for our worship and preschool programs.

Of course now, with Paula Markovitz’s departure, searching for and hiring an outstanding new Executive Director for TDHS is at the top of our list.

Our board has been grounded by the strategic vision that Rabbi Weiner laid out ten years ago. We can all look forward to renewing that strategic guide for the next decades of TDHS, and for doing everything that we can to ensure that Temple is a strong home for our community in future generations just as it has been for us and those before us.

I hope that everyone continues to have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to meeting those that I haven’t met yet in the coming months. Please feel free to reach out at any time at mikeehrenberg@msn.com

Friday, September 26 | 6:30 PM | Seattle Convention Center - Summit Building

Start your year with Refresh:5786 with The Tribe—a vibrant, fun, and meaningful gathering for 20s and 30s to reflect, reconnect, and reset. Explore big questions, set renewed intentions, and enjoy time with friends while making new connections.

A Time for Reflection

Generations of poets and lyricists agree: it is the rain that allows us to truly appreciate the sun. When I first visited Seattle to interview—all the way back in January—it was cold and cloudy. I heard there were mountains, but I couldn’t see them! Since I arrived this summer, though, the mountain has been out! As you Seattleites know, it’s an impressive and inspiring contrast.

On our Jewish calendar, we also find ourselves in a time filled with both rain and sun—a time of constructive contrast. This year, the secular month of August spans parts of two Hebrew months: Av and Elul. The month of Av is most widely recognized for Tisha B’Av (the ninth of Av), known as the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. It is traditionally observed as a fast day in commemoration of the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. But Tisha B’Av also carries with it a long and painful history, with many other tragic events in Jewish life associated with that date.

When we reflect on the Ninth of Av, it can feel like when it rains, it pours. And yet, less than a week later, the sun comes out again! Tu B’Av (the fifteenth of Av) is our Jewish holiday celebrating love, and it arrives just in time to lift us from our sorrow. Tu B’Av offers a moment to embrace Jewish joy and connection—and it’s a great excuse to buy someone flowers!

In some years, the cycle of these holidays serves as a powerful reminder of life’s natural ups and downs. This year, the starkness of that contrast feels especially familiar. As a Jewish community—both at home and abroad—we have felt the pendulum swing between great joy and immense pain at an uncomfortable pace. It can be hard to find even a moment to steady ourselves.

Thankfully, the calendar also offers us space to pause, reflect, and move forward. Elul marks the final month before we begin again with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a month set aside for the practice of Cheshbon Nefesh—deep personal reflection that prepares us for Teshuvah, the High Holidays, and the renewal that comes with starting the cycle of the year once more. For me, this summer—a season of contrasts and reflection—feels energizing as I prepare to live within the rhythms of Jewish life with you at Temple. I know the clouds and rain will return eventually, but I’m not worried. No matter what the world or the weather brings, I know there are thousands of suns shining under our two roofs. I can’t wait to see you shine. It will be my honor to add to your warmth and brightness.

Meet Our Latest Hires

We’re thrilled to welcome three new team members to Temple, each bringing unique skills and fresh perspectives to help our community grow.

I am the new Cemetery Caretaker for Hills of Eternity Cemetery and have been in the cemetery and funeral industry for nearly 29 years. I hope my experience is reflected in the ongoing beautification of the cemetery. Outside of work, I enjoy playing soccer, fishing, traveling—especially spending a week in Cabo San Lucas every fall—and spending time with my large family. I take pride in seeing my work make a positive difference in the community and look forward to continuing my efforts here.

Zelle is a community builder at heart, passionate about creating spaces where people feel seen, connected, and inspired. Born and raised in Seattle, Zelle attended several local Jewish schools before studying at Hebrew University of Jerusalem and then Brandeis University. Over the years, Zelle has worked in film, education, real estate and technology management consulting. One of her most impactful volunteer endeavors was her years at Crisis Connections. Zelle lives in northeast Seattle with her spouse, Omri Nimni, and toddler, Estelle. Zelle is thrilled to support the important work TDHS does for its members and the broader community. She is also excited to meet you! Zelle invites anyone interested to schedule a coffee date—your favorite beverage is on her. Feel free to email her at zrettman@tdhs-nw.org or call/text (206) 492-5260.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Rabbi Jeff was active in Rockdale Temple and URJ Goldman Union Camp. After a gap year with Shnat Netzer, he earned a film degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. He recently completed rabbinical studies at HUC in Los Angeles, receiving academic prizes in Hebrew, rabbinic literature, and writing. Jeff values the intellectual and spiritual growth he experienced there and is excited to join and grow with our Temple community. Outside of work, he enjoys time with his wife Meg and dog Mani (Manischewitz), playing guitar and Nintendo, exploring food, and studying Jewish texts for fun.

Celebrating a Pillar of JRM: Morah Laurel’s Beautiful Farewell

This school year marks a truly special milestone for one of JRM’s most cherished and inspiring educators, Morah Laurel Abrams. After 33 remarkable years of dedication, love, and leadership, Morah Laurel will be retiring on August 8th. While our hearts are full of joy for her next chapter, we also feel a deep ache in saying goodbye to someone who has been such a vital part of our community.

Morah Laurel has worn many hats over the years— teacher, licensing coordinator, program specialist, and director—and in each role, she has brought wisdom, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to early childhood education. Her deep well of knowledge has been an incredible gift to all of us, and personally, I’ve been so grateful for her guidance and support during my first year as JRM Director. Having the chance to learn

from Laurel (and Leah) has been instrumental in helping me find my footing.

To honor her legacy, we gathered on June 14th for a beautiful Havdalah service filled with love, laughter, and memories. Families and staff—past and present— came together to celebrate a teacher who has touched the lives of generations. In fact, Morah Laurel has even taught the children of her former students—a full-circle moment that speaks volumes about her lasting impact. We were also honored to be joined by Kermit Rosen, for whose daughter the school is named.

The service, led by Rabbi Weiner, was filled with heartfelt tributes from former students, some of Morah Laurel’s favorite songs, and touching words from current students, Rabbi Weiner, and former JRM Director Leah Levy. One of the most moving moments was the blessing under JRM’s giant tallit, with Laurel surrounded by current and former students, while teachers—past and present—held the tallit above them. It was a powerful and emotional tribute to a life devoted to nurturing young minds.

After the service, we continued the celebration in the social hall with food, stories, and laughter. The evening before, Morah Laurel was honored with the Lisa Horowitz Staff Award at our annual Installation Shabbat—a fitting recognition of her decades of service and love for JRM.

As she steps into retirement, Morah Laurel looks forward to traveling, spending more time with her family, and perhaps continuing to mentor teachers and support the JRM Director. While we will miss her dearly, we are so grateful for everything she has given to our school and our hearts. Her legacy will continue to shine brightly in the halls of JRM for years to come.

We love you, Morah Laurel. Thank you for everything!

BFRS’s Maccabiah Magic Returns

Relationships. Community. Connections. Belonging. These are words we hear over and over from new and current families in our program. With families from as far south as Olympia, as far east as North Bend, as far north as Mukilteo, and as far west as Bainbridge Island, our program draws students from a wide geographic region. We even have a satellite campus in the Tri-Cities! This makes it all the more important to infuse our program with communitybuilding opportunities. Helping families and students create connections is at the forefront of our work with teachers and madrichim (high school teaching assistants).

One of our favorite ways to create community and build relationships is through programming that is both meaningful and fun. Last September, our Bridge Family Religion School opened the year with a communitybuilding Maccabiah (color war) competition. This September, we are excited to bring back Maccabiah— with a twist.

To launch our new programming year, we’ll channel the themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur into exciting, age-appropriate challenges and activities. Missed the mark this past year? Earn points for your team by literally aiming for a giant human-sized target on the ground! Climb, run, and leap through the 10 Days of Teshuvah Obstacle Course, symbolizing our journey toward reflection and renewal.

For our youngest learners, the focus shifts from competition to collaboration with a Mitzvah Gathering Scavenger Hunt and a chance to create and perform original songs about the year ahead.

We can’t wait to welcome all of our families back this fall for a day of meaning, movement, and memories!

Kever Avot Service: Remembering Our Loved Ones

One of the services Temple offers for the upcoming holiday season is Kever Avot.

It is a traditional service where you can remember loved ones who have passed. Sacred Journeys at Temple has supported and helped plan the service for members of our community who want to participate in this tradition. This year, the Kever Avot service will be held:

Sunday, September 28, 2:00–3:00 PM

In-person and streaming Butterworth / Arthur A. Wright Chapel 520 W. Raye St., Seattle, WA 98119

What is Kever Avot?

Kever Avot is a meaningful Jewish tradition of visiting the graves of parents and close relatives to honor their memory. It is especially observed during the Days of Awe, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For generations, Jewish communities—including our own Temple—have gathered during this sacred time to remember and reflect.

As the High Holy Days approach, our hearts often turn to those we’ve lost—those who once celebrated holidays, shared milestones, and brought depth and joy to our lives. This service offers a gentle and sacred space to honor their memory and carry their presence with us into the New Year.

Who is welcome to attend?

Everyone! Whether your loved one passed recently or many years ago, and regardless of where they are buried, we invite you to join us. During the service, you’ll have the opportunity to light a candle in their memory. If you’re joining virtually, we encourage you to have a candle nearby to participate in this moment from home.

What is the service like?

Led by Rabbi Weiner, this is a heartfelt and informal gathering—a time to pause, reflect, and honor the people who helped shape our lives. Through prayer, memory, and community, we look toward the new Jewish year with intention and hope.

Sacred Journeys welcomes you.

Before the service, Sacred Journeys invites you to enjoy coffee and refreshments—a warm way to connect with others in our Temple family. Afterward, if your loved ones are buried in the cemetery, you are welcome to visit their graves. Stones for placing on headstones will be available at the site.

For more information, please contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org. If you’d like to get involved, Sacred Journeys is always looking for volunteers—reach out to Jennifer to learn more about how you can take part.

Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys.

A Legacy of Leadership

Behind every synagogue, there is a dedicated group of lay leaders who work to create the type of Temple community that our congregants can be proud of. The ties that bind us to Temple are strong and run throughout every member of TDHS, and one of the many families that showcase a legacy of sustained involvement spanning generations is the Piha/Galante family.

Born in 1930, Raymond Galante (95) grew up as a member of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth, a local Sephardic Orthodox synagogue. After marrying his wife

Jeannette, who moved to Seattle from Los Angeles, the young couple sought the “modernity” and “relaxed” atmosphere of a Reform community like Temple De Hirsch Sinai. When Raymond was on a leadership track with the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, he noticed the strong ties between the Federation and many members of Temple De Hirsch Sinai. Citing Samuel Stroum (z’’l), of the Stroum Jewish Community Center and former Temple President, as a mentor to him, Raymond went on to join the Temple board and became Board President in 1977.

The family’s connection to their Sephardic heritage has remained a point of pride and a source of motivation throughout their leadership. As a young University of Washington student, Raymond was barred from joining the Jewish fraternities because he was Sephardic. This exclusion from the broader Jewish community served as an important motivator for Raymond to work on expanding the local Jewish community to include the excluded. Raymond was the first Sephardic Board President of a major Reform congregation in the Seattle area. When Stanley became Board President in 2003, they became the first (and only) Sephardic father-in-law and son-in-law duo to both hold that role at TDHS.

Joining Temple once he married Raymond and Jeannette’s daughter, Valerie, Stanley Piha (73) was also a member of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth. Influenced by Raymond and Jeannette, Stanley and his wife became actively involved with the Federation. Both served as board members, and Stanley was a member of the executive committee prior to his leadership at TDHS. Following in his father-in-law’s footsteps, Stanley joined the Temple board and, 12 years later, became Temple President from 2003 to 2005. Reflecting on how things have changed since his presidency, Stanley shared:

“ In prior years, children would

follow their parents to a house of worship. Today, we see parents are following their children to this congregation.”

Jessica Piha (43), daughter of Stanley and Valerie, is a current member of our Temple board and grew up at TDHS in a way that was quite different from her father and grandfather. She graduated from the Bridge Family Religion School and was an active member of TDSY throughout her young adult life. Jessica had always known she wanted to be involved and take on a

leadership role at Temple, which she did when she was asked to join the board in 2023. Jessica’s mother, Valerie, and uncle, Charlie Galante, have also been past board members at TDHS.

A common thread among Raymond, Stanley, and Jessica’s motivations for leadership has been the desire to contribute to the longevity of our local Jewish community. Jessica strives to ensure that younger generations are proud of their Jewish heritage and have safe spaces where they can explore and grow their community. She wants to foster the type of congregation where younger generations are encouraged to become Jewish advocates and leaders, saying:

“ If I can help in any way to do that, then I’ll do it, and that’s

what I’ve committed part of my life to.”

Jessica embodies the hard work and dedication that Raymond and Stanley fought so hard to instill in younger generations.

Each family has left a lasting legacy at TDHS. In addition to establishing the Galante Student Scholarship Fund, the Galante Family honors each young adult on the occasion of their B’nai Mitzvah with a certificate for a complimentary membership to ARZA, the Reform Movement’s representative within Israeli national institutions. The Piha Young Leadership Award is presented each spring to recognize a young adult lay leader who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in service to the congregation.

Raymond, Stanley, and Jessica don’t think twice about helping their community and putting in the work to ensure its longevity. The passion for finding a place for every individual who comes through these Temple doors goes back generations for the Piha/Galante family—and it is one that will hopefully inspire many more to come.

A Temple for Today and Tomorrow

“ As the dreamers of the past did for us, your gift will help meet the needs of our current members and also fulfill a sacred promise: that Temple will continue to be a spiritual anchor of Seattle’s Jewish community.”
Daniel A. Weiner, Senior Rabbi

Our current building was a legacy of love from those members who had the vision to build it–for us–more than 60 years ago. Following in their footsteps, we have launched a campaign to renew our campus and create welcoming, flexible, safe, and secure spaces that inspire new ways to worship, learn, and gather.

We Are the Link Between Generations

Thank you to the hundreds of donors who have already stepped forward with personally meaningful gifts and pledges to bring this vision to life. As of July 7, our very generous Temple family has donated more than $23.1 million toward our stretch goal of $24 million! Every gift, of every size, is crucial to the success of this historic campaign. Thanks to our matching pool donors, your impact will be doubled – dollar for dollar – up to $50,000 per gift.

There Are Many Ways to Support the Campaign

• Make a one-time gift.

• Pledge over time (up to five years, depending on the size of your gift) to contribute at a level not otherwise possible.

• If you are over age 70½, give directly from your IRA and receive tax benefits in return.*

• Give appreciated, marketable securities and you may avoid, or limit, capital gains tax.*

• Recommend a gift from a donor-advised fund.

• Leverage corporate matching from your employer to double or even triple your impact.**

• Spread the word by sharing the campaign with friends and family!

Our Vision is Coming to Life!

We hope you’ve been watching the dramatic changes taking place in our Seattle campus, with photo updates shared in e-Tidings and on our campaign microsite.

Here are just some highlights of what you will hear about in the coming months:

• Completion of the plaza and exterior landscaping

• Installation of the security vestibule

• Construction of the new foyer ceiling and foyer wall

• Installation of finishes in the Alhadeff Sanctuary, including seating, carpet, dome fabric, and lighting

• Completion of the new restrooms

• Re-paving of the 16th Avenue parking lot

• New carpet and paint in the Chapel

Capital Campaign Honor Roll

as of July 8, 2025

Temple acknowledges and expresses gratitude to the hundreds of members and community friends whose commitments to the capital campaign have made our vision to renew the Seattle campus a reality. Beginning in the November 2025 issue of Tidings, donors will be listed by giving levels (consistent with Temple’s values, no dollar amounts will be listed), unless they prefer otherwise.

Temple is profoundly grateful to The Loeb Family for their visionary investment in Temple’s future.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE & BERNBAUM FAMILY LECTURE

Rabbi Jeff Salkin

“God is so invited to my bat mitzvah.” Or, bar mitzvah — or however you want to write it, or say it. Almost every American Jewish child goes through this ritual experience. It doesn’t mean what it used to mean. Rabbi Salkin has some new ways of understanding it, based on his bestselling book — Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah — and decades of thinking about this core issue in Jewish life.
