TORAH STUDY

Greetings From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

How delightful it was to see so many members in person over the High Holy Days, and to know that others were able to participate online from the comfort of their homes! We are proud to enable our members and others to participate remotely so that all can feel safe and comfortable. The ruach (spirit) of the joy of being together in community was palpable. Even our police security detail commented on how lovely it was to be back, and how thoughtful our members were in thanking them for their presence.

It is an inescapable fact of life now for our community to be even more vigilant than before, as antisemitic comments and actions rise across the globe. Just this morning, as I write this, I received a notice that synagogues in several states were receiving threats via email.

While we are fortunate that Temple has not yet been on the receiving end of such threats, we have nonetheless increased our already-high level of vigilance.

• We continue to work closely with Bellevue Police Department, Seattle Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security and private consultants and contractors to ensure that our campuses are as safe as can be.

• All staff receive annual safety and security training on physical security, along with monthly cybersecurity trainings.

• All staff – in all departments – sign a “boundaries” policy to protect our children.

• We are grateful to the Department of Homeland Security for the two grants we have received and are working to implement – one to enhance security in Bellevue and one for Seattle.

Amidst a world that can seem hostile and unwelcoming, we work together to make Temple a place of refuge and welcome, where one feels the warm embrace of community. Thank you for supporting us in this endeavor, and for being part of the Temple family.

Warmest wishes and Happy Chanukah to you and those you love,

Letter from our Board President

Dear Friends,

A few weeks ago, as I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family, I had the opportunity to look back on the past few months and give thanks for the many blessings in my life. In the spirit of the holiday, I’d like to share a few of the things I’m thankful for with you, my Temple family:

I’m incredibly thankful that our community was able to come together and celebrate this past High Holy Day season. I’m thankful that so many of you were able to join us in-person for the first time in three years, and that we were able to welcome many more of you to Temple via virtual services. I’m thankful for all the community members who participated in our High Holy Day Blood Drive, and for those who donated food to help people in need at JFS Food Bank.

I’m thankful for our thoughtful rabbinic staff, who honor our traditions while always looking to the future. I’m thankful for our hard-working staff, who make sure every last detail is taken care of. I’m thankful for our security guards and for the Seattle and Bellevue Police Departments for keeping us safe and secure during a time of increased antisemitism.

I’m thankful to see our children thriving at JRM and BFRS. I’m thankful to see more young people joining the Tribe and more seniors making connections through Endless Opportunities. I’m thankful for the work our members are doing to engage voters, help the homeless, and protect the environment.

I’m thankful that Temple is always here for us, in good times and bad. And, most of all, I’m thankful for you – because you make it all possible.

Warm wishes,

Rabbi’s Corner: Rededication

Every year, the darkness sneaks up on me. It doesn’t seem to matter that I’ve lived in the Northwest for most of my life. Suddenly, as October enters, I notice that the sun has not yet risen when I wake up, and it sets hours before I go to sleep. As we move toward the end of the secular year, the darkness moves to surround us.

This season, like every season, reminds me of the power of Jewish ways of marking time. We will celebrate Chanukah, our Festival of Light, soon. On a literal level, Chanukah is about lighting up the darkness. Two rabbis famously debate in the Talmud, the ancient discussion of Jewish law, how we should light candles. One says we should light eight candles on the first night and decrease the number of candles each night. The other argues for the opposite position, lighting one candle the first night and increasing each night. He explains his position, saying we should increase in holiness (as represented by the candles) and not decrease. Not only is this the practice with which many of us are familiar, but I love the message behind it. It tells us that, through our actions, we have the power to bring light, to bring holiness, into the world.

On another level, the story of Chanukah is centered around the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. After its desecration by the hands of the Syrian Greeks, the Maccabees retake the Temple and

clean it up. This action of “rededicating” the Temple became so central that the holiday was named Chanukah, meaning “rededication.”

I like the idea of having a check-in a few months into the Jewish year. It’s an opportunity to ask ourselves if we’re beginning our year on the right path. Are we keeping the promises we made to ourselves and others? Chanukah presents the chance to rededicate ourselves to what matters in our lives. Here at Temple, our buildings feel a resurgence of life, and the opportunities to rededicate yourself to our community are abounding.

Together, we can light up the darkness.

Mazel tov to Charlie Alhadeff and Emerald City FC.

Charlie’s soccer team, Emerald City Football Club, traveled from Seattle to Spain to compete in the Donosti Cup. The players, coaches and parents enjoyed a two-week adventure visiting multiple cities and towns where the team trained, explored sites, ate incredible food and created lifelong memories. The tournament, which was held in San Sabastian, brought together 700 teams from around the world. The competition was fierce, but the team made it to the quarterfinals, eventually losing in penalty kicks. There were so many highlights from this trip: visiting Camp Nue, canyoning in Ainsa, attending the opening ceremonies in San Sebastian, competing against kids from several different countries and most importantly, the time they had together.

Happy Anniversaries!

Mazel tov to Laurel Abrams and Denise Weinstein, who celebrated their 30th and 20th respective anniversaries at Temple this year. As longtime Temple congregants and members of the JRM Leadership Team, Denise and Laurel have helped create a warm and nurturing environment for future generations. Get to know these remarkable members of our Temple family!

LAUREL ABRAMS

I grew up at Temple and attended Sunday school from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I went to WSU and received my teaching certificate for Preschool–3rd grade and K-8.

In 1992, I opened the first Pre-K class at JRM, when the school was in its second year. I’ve worn many hats over the years at JRM and am currently the lead teacher in the Leopards class (Pre-K). In addition to classroom responsibilities, I’m part of the JRM Leadership team and keep track of licensing details. Temple is my home away from home, and I cherish the friendships I’ve made here over the years.

In my spare time, my priority is spending time with my two children, my two sons-in-law, and my five grandchildren. My hobbies include mahjong, crafts, and knitting, and I enjoy going to Seahawks, Sounders, Mariners and Cougars games.

DENISE WEINSTEIN

Hi! My name is Denise Weinstein, a.k.a. “Nini,” or “Mama Owl.” I’ve been at JRM for over 20 years and am currently the Lead in the Owl (infant) room. I’m also on the Leadership Board and oversee the infant and toddler rooms.

I grew up in Washington, and my family joined Temple when I was three years old. I’ve worn many hats here at Temple: I’ve worked as a Teaching Assistant in Religion School, taught Pre-K and Kindergarten, and served as Youth Group Director and Hadracha Advisor.

I was very involved in Temple Camp, where I re-met my now-husband (of almost 30 years), Neil Weinstein. He may be familiar to many as the “music guy” teaching music in Religion School or singing during services. We have two adult children whom we are very proud of, Madeline and Noah – both of whom went to JRM and continued through the programs here at Temple.

Temple has been my family’s second home for many years. If you happen to walk by the Owl Room on the first floor at JRM, please check out the plaque honoring my parents, Shirley and Edmond Goldstein, z”l, who donated the funds to open this special room. People ask me almost daily why I am still taking care of up to eight babies. The answer is simple: I’m living out my parents’ legacy, doing what I do best.

Join us at JRM this Winter!

Chanukah is coming up soon, and the season of joy and light has already begun at our preschool! JRM is a community for the entire family, welcoming parents, grandparents, and Temple community friends. The JRM Leadership team and staff are overwhelmingly excited to bring back some favorite preschool programs, and create new traditions of our own.

Tot Shabbat with Guests is BACK!

First Friday of the Month, Bellevue Campus

Join us on the FIRST FRIDAY of every month for Tot Shabbat with JRM! Open to all Families with Young Children, this is the perfect way to end the week and welcome Shabbat! Stop by for our Bagels and Coffee Schmooze at 9:00 AM, followed by Tot Shabbat at 9:30 AM.

Shabbat Jr.

Families now have TWO opportunities to join us for Shabbat Jr. each month! Celebrate with us on the second Friday of the month on Zoom, and on the third Friday of the month at the Bellevue Campus. Visit Temple’s website for more information on both virtual and in-person Shabbat Jr.

With a little paint, the JRM Hedgehogs create their very own wee Halloween pumpkins.
With a little help from baking soda and vinegar, the JRM Leopards help create a Halloween pumpkin that erupts.

Tiyulim: The Adventure Begins!

This year, Temple launched its first field trip-based program called Tiyulim (adventures), funded in part by the SAMIS Foundation. This program is for our 7th and 8th graders and is designed to create authentic experiences for students to practice looking at the world through their Jewish lens. The program is coordinated by Jessie Stott and Eian Snyder, our two teachers, Sivan Komatsu and Aleez Leff, and our two Madrichim, Chloe and Ben.

Our first program was focused on communitybuilding and learning about the Maccabiah games in Israel. A local teen athlete who competed in the games was a featured speaker. Our students traveled to the JCC to participate in our own Maccabiah games. We began with a Jeopardy-style game to learn more about Israel and the history of Maccabiah. Then we took part in our own version of the opening ceremony. After three rounds of games, earning points for each win, we had our closing ceremony and announced our medals.

Our second trip was focused on the Jewish value of Shomrei Adamah (guardians of the Earth) and our connection to the land. Rabbi Laura Rumpf guided this trip as the Tiyulim participants traveled to Nurturing Roots Farms, a community farming program focused on healthy food choices in Beacon Hill. Volunteers showed us the farm and how to harvest its produce; we learned how to compost, and how to clear out old vegetation and make room for the new. We learned about sustainable farming and how, even in the middle of a huge city, you can grow enough to support a

whole community. We worked together to make change and become guardians of the Earth.

In November, our Tiyulim-ers learned about Jewish artists in comic books and pop culture with a visit to MoPop. Led by Rabbi Shawna and Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik from California, we began with an intro looking at well-known midrashim and how they were translated into the medium of comic books. We explored MoPop for inspiration for our own comic books. After lunch, students were able to begin creating their own comic book strip with guidance from Rabbi Shawna and Isaac. Our students then shared their comics with each other and journaled about their day.

We have ten more trips planned for next semester for our students. At the end of the year, each of our students will pick their favorite trip and present to their peers why it was meaningful and what they gained from their experience. We can’t wait for our students to continue down this path of discovery.

Providing Community Connections for our Teens

Temple plays a key role in supporting our middle and high schoolers to find connection to their peers, find meaning in Judaism, and find support during difficult times. Getting back to eating together and celebrating together has been invigorating and a reminder of how much these foundational pieces of our programming contribute to creating important connections.

Our teen and youth programming started off with our first 678 Event of the year: a trip to a Mariners game. Though the Mariners lost, our middle schoolers had a great time together.

Our second-ever Freshman Reconnect run by Jessie Stott and our TDSY (Temple De Hirsch Sinai Youth) Interns gave our freshmen the opportunity to get to know each other and meet Rabbi Weisman.

So far this year, our TDSY Interns (leadership) have planned a kickoff carnival in September, a Challah-ween program in October, a program

in partnership with NFTY-NW called TDSGiving in November, and our annual Shul In (sleepover) called Tri Temple in December in partnership with Temple B’nai Torah (BTY) and Temple Beth Am (BATY). We were so excited to connect with these two temples and their teens as we have for many, many years.

To close out the calendar year, our 678-ers will join together for a movie night in December. We have loved watching our teens and tweens build strong Jewish connections throughout the semester.

Our educational programming for teens is robust and focused on creating connections and opportunities for our students to see the world through a Jewish lens. Through our TDSY Tuesday high school program, 10th Grade Confirmation program, Senior Sessions/Graduation, and trips for 8th-12th graders around the world (LA, DC, and Spain) we are so excited for all the experiences to come for our teens.

In September, we hosted our 2nd annual Freshman Reconnect, led by our TDSY Interns, Jessie Stott, and Rabbi Brett Weisman.

ADULT HEBREW

Basic Hebrew skills go a long way toward understanding the deeper significance of our blessings, prayers, and biblical texts. Using the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) curriculum for adult Hebrew learning, the goal is for students to gain and strengthen decoding and comprehension skills in this series of four workbooks. Emphasis is on Classical Hebrew, the language of biblical and liturgical texts. Whether you’re ready to learn an Aleph from a Bet OR you’ve moved into translating Torah, please contact Rabbi Speizer to share how Temple can support you on the next step in your Hebrew learning journey.

Please reach out to Temple’s Adult Engagement Director, Rabbi Kate Speizer, (206) 693-3046 OR kspeizer@tdhs-nw.org, with questions and any ideas you have for adult Jewish learning this winter and beyond. Rededicating Ourselves to Tikkun Olam

One of the ways in which we can bring light into the world during a dark time is to help others. Many small acts can illuminate the darkness. We can use this time of year to rededicate ourselves to Tikkun Olam, the repairing of our world. In that spirit, we are emphasizing opportunities for hands-on volunteering.

In the Fall, we provided for the future by joining in an effort to plant 300 trees, shrubs, and plants at Angle Lake Park. We look forward to continuing our stewardship efforts throughout the year, with programs for Tu Bishvat, Earth Day, and more.

We also harnessed our construction skills to build a tiny home to house those on the street, partnering with Sound Foundations NW. This one home will

house around three people each year, for 20 years, providing shelter for 60 people in its lifetime.

This year will bring more opportunities to build homes, and care for the Earth; to give blood and feed those in need; to engage in political action and to come together with our friends at FAME (First African Methodist Episcopal Church). Take a look at the Tikkun Olam blog on our website and sign up for the monthly Tikkun Olam newsletter to hear about every opportunity.

Temple staff built a tiny home in a day at Sound Foundations NW. Temple volunteers planting trees at Angle Lake Park in October.

Celebrating the Generosity of our Community

At a time when so many parts of our lives cost more, the financial generosity of Temple’s members and friends is heartwarming. Whether through your annual membership contribution, a listing in the Memorial Book, a tribute in honor of an occasion, or a gift to the Annual Campaign, your gift of tzedakah enables Temple to engage in the holy work of our community. Thank you.

This year we’ve tried (with success!) three new approaches to Temple’s primary fundraiser, the Annual Campaign – Because We’re Family, which runs through December 31, 2022.

First, you may contribute to a fund that aligns most with your personal values: the High Holy Days Fund (for greatest needs, including increased security), the Endless Opportunities Fund, the Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund, or the Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Fund. Contributions already are making a difference across Temple life.

Second, we’ve encouraged members who have company matching programs to designate Temple. We are grateful for their support.

And finally, we’ve been educating more members about the many ways to support Temple that may have significant tax advantages, including the following.*

Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

DAFs are the fastest-growing giving method and a tax-efficient way to manage charitable donations. Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. If you are a DAF holder at Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or BNY Mellon, you can easily make a designation through the

DAFDirect window on the Ways to Give page of Temple’s website.

Appreciated Securities

You can transfer appreciated stock directly to Temple through your broker and avoid paying capital gains tax. Temple’s brokerage information is on the Ways to Give page of the website.

Qualified Charitable Distribution from an Individual Retirement Account

If you are 70 ½ years of age or older, you may give by rolling over up to $100,000 from an IRA, and pay no income tax on the amount that has been transferred.

These are just the nuts and bolts. It’s your generosity that writes our Temple stories: of the young adult attending a 4th Shabbat, the new Kindergartner high-fiving their madrich on a Sunday morning, the young family helping to restore Angle Lake Park, and the group of seniors on a field trip.

Questions? I’d love to answer them!

With gratitude, Barb

Your Legacy Gift to Temple is a Promise to Future Generations

How have your Jewish values been shaped by Temple?

Which of your Temple memories bring you comfort, or joy?

What aspects of Temple life do you cherish most—learning, community, worship, caring for those in need, or social justice?

Whatever you care about most, when you make a legacy gift, you confirm your place in the fabric of Temple’s 123-year-old history and ensure that our vibrant congregation will serve the community for generations to come.

If you have already included a legacy gift to Temple in your estate plans, please share your intent with Lisa Horowitz, Executive Director so we can recognize your investment in Temple’s future. There is no need to tell us the amount of your gift. Legacy donors will be recognized if they wish in the Spring 2023 print edition of Tidings.

Supporting Temple Members

“Thank you for holding this service in person this year,” said a Temple member whose family attended the Kever Avot service at Hills of Eternity on October 2.

Others who attended voiced their appreciation for this service:

“We feel supported and a part of a community here.”

“My mother died out of town, but I came here to light a candle in her memory.”

“My family members died years ago, but I feel I have honored them with this service.”

Members of Sacred Journeys came together to put on this spiritually meaningful service, led by Rabbi Weiner. The service includes each person lighting a yahrzeit candle in honor of someone they have lost.

In addition to this service, Sacred Journeys continues to reach out to Temple members who lose a loved one. We make a condolence call after the family death and follow up by mailing a note to the family.

We also make a call and send the family a yahrzeit candle for the first anniversary of the loss.

Pre-Covid, we had also delivered chicken soup to the family, but we had to pause that part of our program during Covid. We are working to get back to soup delivery and are looking for volunteers who are willing to deliver soup! If you have some time and want to join us supporting our Temple community, please contact Jennifer Phillips, jphillips@tdhs-nw.org.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

Support our Temple community by delivering chicken soup. Contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org for more infomation.
