Where They Know My Name
By Lisa D. Horowitz, Executive Director
Dear Friends,
As I write this, my last letter for Tidings as Executive Director, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the Temple De Hirsch Sinai community. I feel so fortunate to have served Temple for the past decade, and to have had the pleasure and blessing of getting to know so many of you.
Recently, someone asked me what I liked most about working at Temple and the answer came readily: the people that make up this sacred community. Rabbi Weiner and other rabbis, my colleagues on staff, the Board leaders with whom I’ve been privileged to have worked, and the members and guests we all serve. We frequently refer to Temple as a “family of families” and it’s an apt description.
There is power in a Jewish community – warmth and love and caring, and a deep sense of responsibility for
one another and for the world in which we live, coupled with the secure knowledge of belonging. As Jonathan Sacks, Emeritus Chief Rabbi of England, wrote in his book Celebrating Life:
“ Community is the human expression of Divine love. It is where I am valued simply for who I am, how I live and what I give to others. It is the place where they know my name.”
3 TEMPLE TIDINGS | SUMMER 2024
Lisa with Rabbi Daniel Weiner and Past President Don Loeb at Temple’s 2019 Annual Meeting .
Here at Temple, we definitely “know your name.” Our staff care deeply about the community we all serve, and get to know our members as individuals – valuing all, as Rabbi Sacks notes, for who they are, how they live and what they give to others.
Despite being one of the largest synagogues in the United States, with a long and august history, there is an intimacy and warmth to Temple that is unmistakable. There is also a palpable sense of being part of concentric circles of community: the Temple community, the Seattle Jewish community, and the world Jewish community, as well as the broader community of neighbors around us.
Throughout my time here at Temple, I have watched babies being named in the embrace of family and friends; watched little ones toddle off to Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool and then stride on to the Bridge Family Religion School; watched madrichim work with younger students as they prepare themselves for college – and the world! We know they will make lifelong friends here because we have watched their parents do it before them – so many firm friendships have been forged at our preschool and religion school. It’s surely no coincidence that Temple’s Board of Trustees is now led by a former preschool auction chair, nor that our capital campaign is led by devoted volunteers with fond memories of their own days at religion school in Seattle.
It’s also no coincidence that Temple has many new members and many leaders whose history at Temple began only a short time ago, for Temple has always striven to welcome the newcomer. New to town, looking for a new spiritual home, or looking for a place to gather in community at a trying time? Temple continues to welcome all who seek the community we offer.
That community is made up not only of individuals and families, but also of moments in time. The moment when a volunteer caller connects with a 96-year-old member who’s at home during COVID, just to check in. The moment the rabbi beckons the congregation to stand in solidarity with those who are in mourning. The moment the arc is opened at Kol Nidre. And the moments during which we gather in number to support our global community, whether in Pittsburgh, Israel or elsewhere.
Being a part of such a meaningful community is a gift to be cherished. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the Temple community. I look forward to being part of the community going forward – from a different perspective.
Warmest thanks,

Letter from Our Board President
By Alison Handlin
ALISON HANDLIN TDHS BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe that my first year as President is already coming to an end. It’s been such an honor and a pleasure to serve this community, and I’m deeply grateful for everyone’s support and guidance. We recently held a Board retreat on the Seattle Campus, which gave me an even greater appreciation for all the smart, caring, and dedicated people I work with.
I’m also incredibly proud of Temple’s ongoing role in the community. It’s a privilege to belong to a synagogue where we can hear from world-class speakers on issues like antisemitism and the war in Gaza. It’s also a privilege to celebrate Chanukah and Purim with families throughout our community; to gather around the Seder table with our neighbors at FAME; and to participate in projects like our HIAS Welcome Circle initiative. I’m in awe of all that Temple makes possible for our community, this year and every year.
As summer approaches, I’m looking forward to the year ahead and all the change it will bring. I’m excited to welcome new Board members and officers and to introduce our next Executive Director to the community. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Lisa Horowitz once again for her leadership these past ten years and for all she does to support our community. We’ll be honoring Lisa’s contributions in many ways at the end of June; look for information on a community celebration coming soon.
I’ve also been thrilled to see so many new members join Temple in the last year. If you’re new to the community, please feel free to reach out and introduce yourself – I’d love to meet you!
I look forward to seeing you at Temple soon and celebrating even more milestones with you.
Warmly,

LEADERSHIP
Rabbi’s Corner: Turn And Face The Strange
By Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner
The soundtrack of this season of blooming renewal for me is David Bowie’s stuttering proclamation of inevitable flux: Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes. The process of change and the growth that results from it—even and especially from death and decay—testifies to the myriad ways in which our lives are inexorably intertwined with the foundations of the physical world around us.
Even so, while such life-affirming evolution breeds excitement and anticipation, there are feelings of uncertainty and anxiety that accompany even the most positive alterations in our lives. And while Bowie inspires us to “...Turn and face the strange,” at times the fears and trials to faith emerging from the ebbs and flows of existence can leave us feeling unmoored and disoriented.
Institutions and communities experience this dual nature of change as well, amplified by the individual experiences of its members and the collective angst that can accrue. And as with the advice often shared with young families—to plan for only one major life change per year—the cycles of life and circumstance often cram multiple changes into a single season.
Our once-in-a-generation capital campaign and remodel are certainly reflections of positive growth, though they are not without their challenges to our pangs of nostalgia for what was, despite our embrace of the need to provide for what will be. And the welldeserved retirement of our beloved Executive Director Lisa Horowitz, coupled with the transition of Rabbi Fine to the next stage of his rabbinic career, and the expansion and deepening of our musical team emerging from staff transitions, together can feel a bit overwhelming and leave us longing for the comfort of the familiar.
DANIEL A. WEINER SENIOR RABBI
Our tradition leans into the struggle and possibility of change through a spiritual and moral lens that provides even deeper meaning and greater agency for us. The theme of the High Holidays, teshuvah, rooted in a sense of “turning or return,” is structured to be an annual commemoration and staple of a productive, healthy life. We are encouraged to assess our faults, vow to change, and then improve our responses to similar situations that previously led us astray.
In essence, it is a return, not exactly to what we were, but rather a turning toward the best of what we can be. In this spirit, inevitable change becomes the necessary and welcomed engine for authentic living, requiring us to transcend our fears and anxieties as much as elevating us to behold unseen and exciting horizons.
And so, as we course through this time of significant change for Temple, amidst a tempest of tumult in a troubled world, these natural and needed transitions will continue to enable our community to be an anchoring foundation of tradition and connection, charting a stable pathway into an unclear but still vibrant future.

Meet Temple’s Advancement Team
Temple’s staff is always here to support our community as it grows and evolves. This past fall, our Development and Communications teams – which collaborated closely together – formally merged into an Advancement team. The team partners closely with Barb Maduell, Temple’s Senior Director Capital Campaign and Major Gifts, to support campaign communications, stewardship programs, and more.

HALLIE SANTO, Director of Advancement
I grew up in a secular Jewish household in New York and always wanted to learn more about Judaism. A cross-country move and a pandemic later, I found the answers I was looking for at Temple, and joined the staff in 2022. Previously, I worked as a writer and marketer in the games industry, where I discovered a passion for community-building. I’ve greatly enjoyed working with colleagues and lay leaders at Temple to help bring new ideas to fruition and create meaningful experiences for our congregation. My hobbies include reading, yoga, tabletop gaming, and following Kraken hockey.

EMMA SILVERSTEIN Development Manager
After graduating from Carleton College with a degree in Geology, I was introduced to development and fundraising while serving at an education nonprofit in the D.C. area. A few years ago, I made the cross-country move to join Temple, and am currently managing our migration to ShulCloud. I’m excited to bring our congregation an updated database that streamlines processes for congregants and staff alike. Outside the office, you can find me line dancing, playing the French Horn, hiking, and catching any soccer match I can.
TALYA KURLAND Marketing Manager
Since graduating from Western Washington University with a BA in Communication, I’ve gotten to combine my passion for engaging with others with my love of Judaism and Israel, and work in various roles in the Jewish space. I joined Temple in December 2020 and currently serve as Marketing Manager. It’s been a joy getting
Though my roots are in the Midwest, I moved to Seattle in 2018 after earning an M.A. in Arts Administration from Indiana University. I quickly fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and began my fundraising career at the University of Washington School of Music. I joined the Temple team in February 2023 and specialize in annual fundraising and donor stewardship. I love building relationships with our congregants and matching their philanthropic passions to programs at Temple. When I’m not working, I enjoy hiking or exploring farmers markets with my husband, perusing cookbooks at local bookstores, or attending the Seattle Symphony and the Opera.
ILANA ZARISKI Communications & Marketing Coordinator
I was born and raised in Washington and grew up attending Temple De Hirsch Sinai, so my work here is extra special to me. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Communications in 2023 and worked in sports and non-profit communications throughout my time in Arizona. After graduation, I moved back to Washington and joined Temple’s Advancement team in March 2024. I have a passion for social media marketing and enjoy interacting with the community and sharing all the wonderful programs that Temple provides.

SPOTLIGHT ON STAFF
Introducing Our New Sacred Journeys Leadership
By Rachel Stoner and Stephanie Carmel
In 2013, several of our members had the idea to start a group to support our congregants after they lose a loved one. Anyone who has experienced this kind of loss knows that small gestures of kindness are very welcomed at these times. From this idea, Sacred Journeys was born.
We are writing this article during International Women’s Month and want to take the opportunity to recognize and thank the smart, resourceful and caring women who made this happen: Laurie Warshal Cohen, Toby Donner, Linda Brandeis, Charlene Polyansky and Jerilyn Anderson. This year, the team has decided to pass the Sacred Journeys leadership torch and we have gladly accepted it. We wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves.
STEPHANIE CARMEL
My family and I joined TDHS 21 years ago, when our kids were three and five. We have loved being a part of the community. I served on Temple’s Board for 10 years, where I chaired the Religion School Committee and then the Cemetery Committee.
After I went to my first Kever Avot service to honor the memory of my dad, I became interested in supporting the Sacred Journeys Committee. I was so moved by the kindness, comfort, and support that Sacred Journeys offered to everyone. I am honored to be a part of a committee that connects with our congregants during such an important time in their lives.
RACHEL STONER
Like Stephanie, our family joined TDHS when my kids were toddlers. The TDHS community welcomed us with open arms. Early on, I volunteered to facilitate potluck desserts after Religion School and make hamantaschen, among other volunteer opportunities. Eventually, TDHS got me out of the kitchen, and I accepted a position on the Board, where I’ve served three terms. I currently serve on the Executive Board as the Secretary, as well as Chair of the Governance committee.
My interest in Sacred Journeys peaked after I first attended a Kever Avot service with my mother. I was so moved by the sense of community and comfort we all felt while commemorating and lighting candles for our loved ones who passed. I have lost both my father and stepfather, and I knew I wanted to be part of Sacred Journeys to comfort, listen and lift up those in our community experiencing loss.
If you or anyone you know could use the support of this group, please let us know. If you are interested in volunteering, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org, and she’ll put us in touch. We look forward to continuing the meaningful traditions created by Sacred Journeys.

HIAS Welcome Circle Update
By Rabbi Avi B. Fine
We wanted to share an update on Marling, a newly arrived refugee, who we are supporting in her transition to the area.
Marling arrived in our community on March 7th and is originally from Nicaragua. She is adjusting amazingly well to life here. After living in temporary housing for her first month, she has since moved into her own studio apartment and started working at a Mercer Island based business. Your donations allowed us to help her set up her small space with everything she needs, and to cover her first month’s rent. She is determined to make money and live frugally so she can support her son in her home country and eventually bring him here to live with her. She has connected with a Spanishspeaking Catholic church and learned to navigate around the area on public transportation.
Unsurprisingly, not everything has been smooth in her transition. Marling initially fled to Costa Rica for her safety. She left her six-year-old son with her parents because she had no idea where her journey would take her and how safe she would be. While in Costa Rica, she began the process of seeking asylum in the U.S. and found work as a caregiver for an elderly woman. When Marling found out she was coming to the U.S., her luggage was stolen by her employer, who did not want her to leave. She arrived with only a backpack and its contents. Thanks to your generous donations, she has
been able to supplement her wardrobe since arriving here.
Upon arrival, though Marling was legally allowed to work, she did not have a social security number, and that proved to be a barrier to finding employment. Her social security card did not arrive in a timely manner, necessitating a trip to the social security administration, where you must already have an SSN to make an appointment. She still has not received her SS card, and her bank has been threatening to shut down her account. Through it all, Marling has maintained a positive attitude and showed immense resilience.
This work is spearheaded by our amazing Welcome Circle at Temple, comprised of Betsy Cohen, Holly Levin, Mario Goertzel, Cindy Weiner, and Amber Berman-Ortiz. They are giving so much of themselves and their time to ensure Marling has a place to live, a stable job, and the tools to build a life here. This work is only possible thanks to many generous donations from our community to support Marling’s housing and necessities.
We are still accepting donations to support Marling, and she is looking for people with whom to practice speaking English. Additionally, if you have a small nightstand or a small but comfy chair, we would love to have it. If you have any questions or would like to support Marling’s journey, please email us at TDHSWelcomeCircle@gmail.com.
SATURDAY, MAY 4, 10 AM-12 PM.
The Temple De Hirsch Sinai community is returning to Angle Lake Park for forest restoration. We’ll be celebrating Earth Day and continuing our important efforts of maintaining the nature trail. TDHS Trips for Teens: Learning About the World Through A Jewish Lens
By Jessie Stott & Stacey Delcau
Experiential education is one of the main ways to create positive memories with our TDHS community and make Judaism come alive in a relevant and impactful way. Our students learn how to see the world around us through a Jewish lens from our surrounding community all the way to Europe. Over the past few years, we have grown our programs to offer experiential trips to students in 7th –12th grade.
Travel begins for our 7th graders with our extended Sunday program, Tiyulim (“trips/adventures”). Our students are given 12 opportunities to travel to local locations like MoPop, Seattle Mikvah, the Burke Museum, the Seattle Aquarium, mosques/churches, and the Seattle Jewish Film Festival -- all with the intention to show our students what Judaism and Jewish values
can look like outside of the home and synagogue. They explore topics like lifecycles, environmentalism, Israel, religion and science, and many others.
Each year, our 8th graders travel to Los Angeles, CA for MLK weekend. This year, 26 students attended the trip with Rabbi Brett Weisman, Jessie Stott, Eian Snyder, and Talia Starr. We spent Friday with a kosher food scavenger hunt through the Jewish neighborhood of Pico Robertson, tasting delicious treats and seeing

how locals prepare for Shabbat. We also learned from members at Beit Teshuvah (a Jewish recovery house), and to end our evening, we attended the MLK Shabbat service at Sinai Temple. On Saturday, we began the day with morning services at Venice Beach, then headed to Universal Studios for the rest of the day. We concluded our trip on Sunday morning by attending the MLK service at First AME Church.
Our 9th & 10th graders join together to take advantage of two travel opportunities in alternating years: the L’taken social justice seminar in Washington, DC, and a trip to Arizona focused on immigration justice. This year, Stacey Delcau, Jessie Stott and Rabbi Fine chaperoned our trip to Arizona. For this trip, we partnered with Tzedek America to learn about immigration by hearing from speakers from all
different sides of the issue, volunteering for a variety of organizations, and taking a walk along the Arizona/ Mexico border.
Meanwhile, our 11th & 12th graders travel to Europe and New York in alternating years. This year, our students traveled to New York with Rabbi Weisman and Jessie Stott. They explored Ellis Island, the Lower East Side, Borough Park, and the 9/11 Memorial; and they celebrated Shabbat at B’nai Jeshurun and Central Synagogue. And in addition to all the yummy food, they couldn’t miss checking out Wicked on Broadway!
Our trips around the world are always a highlight of our school year, and we have already started planning for next year!

Temple has simply been the most welcoming Jewish community we’ve ever known
Daniel Stiepleman and Jessica Hawley
Shortly after we moved to the Seattle area, our kids started asking to join a temple -- which was weird, because we had never belonged to one before. But we were coming from New York’s Upper West Side, and instinctively they seemed to sense that something was missing in their new milieu, and that they’d find it in a synagogue. We tried to convince them to eat more bagels instead. When that didn’t work, we joined TDHS.
Temple has simply been the most welcoming Jewish community we’ve ever known, with celebrations, holiday services and weekly t’fillah that satiate a deeper hunger than any of us knew we had. We’re so grateful our kids pushed us through the door.
Still haven’t found a decent bagel, though.

Gayle Carrol
We joined Temple when our oldest child was about to start kindergarten (he’s about to turn 50). I was fortunate to find a community within the community to be part of. Because I got involved with Religion School when my children were young, it felt like there was a friendly face or someone I knew whenever I came to Temple. Coming to Temple is like attending a happy family event.
Gloria Milner
I joined Temple De Hirsch Sinai as my son and grandchildren belong and I moved here a year and a half ago from NYC. It has been a welcoming place with Shabbat services, High Holidays and Sisterhood. I am participating with the kids in Religion School activities and love the whole experience.
Andrew Rosenthal
When we moved to Seattle this summer, finding the right synagogue was a top priority. Jennifer and I were drawn to TDHS because of the programming for young families, championed by the clergy, delivered by the staff, and enlivened by the vibrant madrichim. And an added bonus has been the substantial intellectual and Israelfocused guest lectures. We’ve felt warmly, personally welcomed, while enjoying all the benefits of the large TDHS community.
Georges Krinker
I am a Temple member because it feels more important than ever to belong to a community that offers support and care during these challenging times to be a Jew.

Maximize Your Gift to Temple
By Emma Silverstein, Development Manager
Do you want to double the impact of your donation to Temple? You can through your employer’s matching program! Many local companies offer to match their employees’ charitable donations, which means your gift to Temple will go twice as far.
Gifts to the following funds at Temple are match-eligible:
Endless Opportunities Fund: Engages thousands of seniors throughout our greater community for lifelong learning and social gatherings.
Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Fund: Offers young families starting their Jewish journeys access to the highest-quality early child education and childcare in the region.
Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund: Supports new opportunities to repair the world, addressing urgent issues including food insecurity, the environment, homelessness, and poverty.
We have received matching donations from employees working at a number of different corporations including Microsoft, Costco, Apple, and T-Mobile! If you aren’t sure if your company has a matching program, contact your HR representative.
If you are interested in matching your gift to Temple or would like more information about our matchable funds, please email Emma Silverstein, Development Manager, at esilverstein@tdhs-nw.org or by phone at (206) 492-5260.
We’re looking for sponsors for 2024-25!
Sponsorship is a great way to support Temple programs, from weekly Shabbat onegs to annual events like our Chanukah and Purim festivities.
Looking for the right opportunity for you or your business?
Please contact Emma Silverstein, Development Manager, at esilverstein@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 492-5260.

Capital Campaign Update
By Aaron Alhadeff and Laurie Minsk, Campaign Co-chairs
Our Seattle campus has been a hub of activity in recent months, perhaps more than ever in Temple’s history. From Shabbat services welcoming newcomers of all ages to our Purim celebration filled with the smiles of 450 people, we continue to bring together the greater Jewish and interfaith communities for speakers, dialogue, and support. This reinforces for us the importance of reinvesting in Seattle. It’s wonderful to imagine the not-too-distant future when our new spaces match our welcoming values.
We are excited to share the progress we have made since our last update in the February Tidings! As of April 8, we have raised more than $16.4 million toward the $18 million scope and goal approved by the congregation almost a year ago. In this issue, we are honored to recognize those donors who have made gifts or pledges in the early phase of the campaign.
We are also on time and on budget with our original plans and intend to begin construction in the first quarter of 2025. At the same time, after much research by our consultants, we have learned of additional work needed now to avoid disruption in the future. This expanded scope would include repairs to the sanctuary dome interior and exterior, AV upgrades, and security upgrades, including adding an entry vestibule at the
16th Ave entrance. Factoring in project, financing and fundraising costs, our campaign goal would increase to approximately $22.5M. At its March meeting, the Board endorsed the possibility of expanding the scope, should we have a clear path to achieving a higher campaign goal. We are now exploring this along with our ongoing campaign fundraising and will keep you informed. Any vote required by our by-laws will be brought to the congregation.
Asking people to invest in the initial phase of the campaign has involved meaningful conversations between our staff, campaign volunteers, and members. As our fundraising continues, volunteers are excited to reach out to everyone in our Temple community in the coming year. If you have questions, are ready to make a gift, or want to join our growing group of volunteers, please tell us, and we would love to meet!

Outreach to Members at Times of Loss, Bereavement, and Mourning
Sacred Journeys volunteers reach out to the Temple community:
• With a condolence call when there is a death in the family.
• With a follow-up call a few months after the family death.
At the time of the first anniversary of the death:
• Send a yahrzeit candle in the mail, send a personal note, and make a phone call to family members.
We sponsor Kever Avot, the annual Cemetery Memorial Service.
Please let us know if you would like to join us as a volunteer: contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org or (206) 693-3047.
Sacred Journeys is supported by the William and Edith Warshal Fund for Sacred Journeys, and by donations from Temple members.
