A Warm Welcome to High Holy Days at Temple
By Lisa D. Horowitz
Dear Friends, What a pleasure it is to come together for High Holy Days,
gathering in community after a long and lovely Seattle summer! We very much look forward to seeing you as together we celebrate ageold traditions infused with modern sensibilities, hear the lilting holiday melodies and the awe-inspiring call of the shofar. Whether it is your first High Holy Days at Temple, or you measure your Temple participation in decades, welcome back to your Temple.
As you enter our Seattle and Bellevue campuses for the High Holy Days this year, our staff, Board, and other volunteer greeters will be ready to welcome you. If you don’t know the greeter at the door, please introduce yourself; we are eager to get to know our newest members in person, and to see old friends. As always, our security team of guards and off-duty officers will be on-site to help ensure our safety. To assist with that task, please avoid bringing backpacks or large bags. Diaper bags are fine, of course; we love seeing our little ones! And please plan to arrive early to allow time to park; our services begin at the stated times.
Another way we will be welcoming everyone back this coming fall is with great programming for every age and stage of life. Elders will find a rich panoply of offerings through Endless Opportunities. Families with young children can engage with one another at Shabbat Shelanu and other programs. Our Tikkun Olam efforts continue to engage our community and inspire the broader region. And our Tribe events for young adults are constantly reimagined to best appeal to the shifting needs of this important demographic.
LISA D. HOROWITZ EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Additionally, we’d like to highlight a few new opportunities that our members can look forward to this fall:
■ Dr. Lisa Miller will speak to parents of every age child on The Awakened Brain. Please join us for this year’s Bernbaum Family Lecture on Sunday, October 15, at 10:00 AM in the Alhadeff Sanctuary.
■ Rabbi Laura Rumpf, our Rabbi-in-Residence for Spirituality and Social Justice, will offer workshops on the intersection of creativity and spirituality, drawing on her work with the cutting-edge Jewish Studio Project.
■ Our emerging Nefesh L’Nefesh support group for families experiencing cognitive and memory impairment will enable our community to be there for one another in the face of this growing challenge.
■ At Sukkot, we’ll be rolling out a new initiative for “small groups” of like-minded Temple members to build and strengthen connections. Interested in movies? Wine? Good books? Look for more information in the coming weeks.
I look forward to seeing you and extending a personal warm welcome to Temple!
Fondly,

LEADERSHIP
Letter from Our Board President
By Alison Handlin
ALISON HANDLIN TDHS BOARD PRESIDENT
• The capital project to transform our Seattle campus for future generations is underway. We’re delighted to share a few updates with you in this issue of Tidings (please see page 23).
• Development has been my greatest passion since joining the Board, and I look forward to continuing to be involved. I’m excited for Sarah Goldhammer to take on the role of Development Chair and provide a fresh perspective.
• The Board will also continue to focus on long-term financial stability to ensure that Temple will thrive well into the future.
I’d like to thank all our Board members for their leadership, as well as Temple’s talented and dedicated clergy and staff. And, last but not least, I’d like to thank you for helping us create such a warm and welcoming community at Temple.
I’m grateful to my predecessor, Aaron Alhadeff, for his guidance and support as I take on this role. Like Aaron, I believe that Temple should prioritize relationships over transactions. My top priority is ensuring that Temple is responsive to the needs of our diverse and growing community, and that members of all ages and stages of life feel deeply connected to Temple.
I’m excited to be working with new and returning Board members as we plan for Temple’s future. Here are just a few highlights:
Torah Study
Saturdays, 9:30-10:30 AM
In-person in Seattle or on Zoom
Begin your Shabbat morning with an hour-long interactive study of the week’s Torah’s portion and its implications on our lives. Everyone is welcome, and no prior experience is necessary.
I look forward to seeing you at Temple this fall; if we haven’t met, feel free to introduce yourself!
Warmly,

It’s an honor and a pleasure to be serving this community as Board President.
Temple has been my family’s home for many years, and the responsibility of leading this congregation is one that I don’t take lightly.
LEADERSHIP
Rabbi’s Corner: Let’s Redo It Again
By Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner
DANIEL A. WEINER SENIOR RABBI
Residence Chava Mirel joins Rabbis Fine and Weisman, amplifying the familiar foundations of our service with a renewed effort to welcome and celebrate the multiple generations that desire worship accessible to all.
For the elementary school set, it’s called a “do-over.” For golfers, a “mulligan.” For the tech-savvy, a “reboot.” And for the wellness-besotted, a “refresh.” The literary-minded might push back on Fitzgerald’s caution about “...no second acts in American lives.” And the Torah’s Yovel/Jubilee offers the ultimate economic reset, cast in those iconic words that inspired civic leaders to engrave them on the Liberty Bell: “...proclaim liberty throughout the land to all the inhabitants thereof.”
Our upcoming High Holidays encourage our own spin on this timeless pursuit of second chances: Teshuvah, a “return” to a better path and repentance for the failings of the past year. But our embrace of this opportunity transcends mere repetition. It is a chance for a genuine re-envisioning toward a transformative renewal, building upon individual commitment to forge a communal and moral evolution.
And while all synagogues strive to provide the context and connection for this re-jew-venation, the coming crispness of fall also brings with it exciting and, in many ways, generational changes at Temple. As always, the High Holidays will blend timeless prayers and melodies with relevant and engaging modes of worship. Renowned singer Stephen Kalm and I will continue our decades-long partnership, augmented by Musical Director Douglas Cleveland and home-grown cantorial soloist Jacqueline Kamm. And our sublime Artist-in-
In these trying times of unprecedented challenge, our High Holiday messages will inform, inspire, and engage: From insights emerging from the 50th anniversary of Israel’s Yom Kippur War, to an exploration of what Jewish wisdom offers in the face of encroaching Artificial Intelligence; from the imperative of saying “no” as a way of preserving the integrity of identity, to ultimate questions of life’s purpose and promise. We hope our High Holiday experience will provide sustenance for the mind and spirit, as timeless tenets meet this dynamic moment in our culture.
And of course, the coming year will bring the ground-breaking remodel of our 16th Ave Complex. Ours is a congregational moment that is privileged to experience a revitalization of our facilities that will ensure that Temple remains vibrant, engaging, and relevant for our children, our grandchildren, and beyond. There will be many opportunities for everyone in our Temple family to participate in this transformative process. We hope you’ll join us as we secure Temple’s purpose and promise for the future.
The Book of Ecclesiastes offers a message of humility and hope, tempering the hubris of the current generation that imagines it knows more than any previous, instilling an awareness of the distinction between the shallow trends of the moment and the transcendent values that define our humanity. This balance is encompassed in the iconic phrase: “There is nothing new under the sun.” While seemingly deflating in its assessment, the commentator Rashi reminds us, “But one who engages in the study of Torah constantly finds new insights therein.”
Perhaps the greatest gift of Judaism to the broader

world—and Reform Judaism even more critically—is an appreciation of this balance and blend. As timeless principles complement revitalizing creativity, evolving sensibilities are founded upon rooted tradition, and the pillars of the past anchor the dreams of the future. From its founding to this very moment, Temple has reflected the best of this balance and blend. And the coming year will continue to brilliantly reflect this dynamic. We invite you to align your personal, yearly refresh with an
embrace of all the ways that Temple deepens your lives and broadens your horizons.
I wish all of you a true and enduring Shana Tova a good, healthy, and blessed New Year.

Three Lessons from My First Year at Temple
By Rabbi Brett C. Weisman
Looking back at this year, I am grateful for so many things. I am grateful for the opportunities to serve this congregation; I am grateful for the fulfillment of a dream of becoming a rabbi that began while studying for my bar mitzvah; I am grateful that Seattle has quickly become home for my family and me; and I am grateful for the amazing work Temple De Hirsch Sinai does to serve the Jewish community of Seattle – today, and for tomorrow.
I want to give three highlights from the past year and a lesson I have gleaned from each one.
Ringing in 5783 with Temple’s first in-person High Holy Day celebration since 2019 was such a remarkable moment. Families and friends joining together and looking to the future with hope was such a breath of fresh air. Having the option to observe services on Zoom is a true blessing, but there is nothing quite like being together as a community.
Purim was an absolute blast! Purim is by far my favorite holiday, and seeing everyone in their costumes playing games, eating tacos and laughing along with the spiel filled me with so much joy. Perhaps most importantly, I saw the work that goes into a successful
Purim celebration. I am so immensely grateful to Board member Sarah Goldhammer and Temple’s Membership & Engagement Director, Paula Cooper, for their tremendous leadership. I learned that when we work together, we can do amazing things.
Finally, working with the education team and getting involved with the Bridge Family Religion School gives me such hope for the future of Jewish life at Temple and here in Seattle. Sunday school is vibrant and full of Judaism. One particular highlight was taking high schoolers on an amazing trip to Spain. Not only was this an opportunity for teens to learn about the history of Spanish Jewry, but it was—more importantly—an opportunity for them to explore, expand their horizons with new experiences, and grow interpersonally.
I am so impressed with this community and the intentionality with which we operate. Year one was full of growth and learning; here’s to a future full of hope and joy!

New Roles at Bridge Family Religion School
As we prepare for the new school year at BFRS, we have some exciting staff updates to share!
Mazel tov to Meredith Silverman, Jessie Stott, and Eian Snyder on their new roles. Learn more about them and what they’ll be doing at BFRS this year!
MEREDITH SILVERMAN | A ssistant Director of Education
Over the past four years at Temple, Meredith has proven to be a dynamic and engaging teacher. She’s the creative brain behind so many of BFRS’s special programs during the last two years (including the 3/4th Shabbaton, Gathering Sparks and our end-of-year picnic). We are so excited to welcome her in this role!
A Message from Meredith:
As a career educator, helping children find their “ah-ha” moments has been one of my greatest joys. When I became a parent to my two daughters, I realized how important sharing with them my Jewish community and culture became.
Working as the Assistant Director of Education for the Religious School, I have the unique opportunity and privilege to join these two passions: to help create “ah-ha” moments for the many children of the Bridge Family Religion School; helping each child grow in understanding their own Jewish identity, culture, and community.
Meredith will be running all aspects of the Sunday morning Bellevue program, helping to support our teachers, developing our curriculum, and continuing to plan amazing special programs.
You can reach Meredith at msilverman@tdhs-nw.org
JESSIE STOTT | Assistant Director, Hebrew and Teen Programming
Jessie has spent the past few years innovating our 5th and 6th grade Hebrew program while teaching at the same time. Jessie has such a passion for making sure our kids connect in a meaningful and positive way and we are so excited to have her in this role.
A Message from Jessie:
I am so excited to be transitioning into my next role as Assistant Director of Hebrew and Teen Programming. This year, I look forward to partnering with our teachers to continue expanding our programming and creating experiences for our students that are positive and supportive. I will also continue to coordinate most of our high school programming, including Madrichim, TDSY (Temple De Hirsch Sinai Youth) Tuesday, Confirmation, Senior Sessions and Graduation, and travel opportunities. Both roles focus on providing all students a space to be themselves, building and strengthening relationships, exploring new concepts, and discovering their personal Jewish identity.
You can reach Jessie at jstott@tdhs-nw.org

HIGH HOLY DAYS 5784
High Holy Day Preparation: An Invitation
By Rabbi Kate Speizer, Director of Adult Engagement & Endless Opportunities
We are encouraged to prepare individually before joining one another for communal prayer on Rosh Hashanah as we officially begin the High Holy Days. Let’s explore what these preparations could look like.
Jewish tradition teaches that the month of Elul – the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah – is a time for cheshbon ha’nefesh, checking in on our souls. We are invited to take responsibility for where we could have done better, to own the mistakes we’ve made, and do some spiritual “accounting.”
One might do this by setting aside a few minutes each day, or by planning an afternoon of reflection, to respond to big questions like…
• What am I proud of from this past year?
• What do I regret?
• From whom must I ask forgiveness?
• Whom must I forgive?
• What can I release from the past year?
• What do I want to embrace in the year to come?
Additional Elul rituals include:
• Blowing the shofar every morning (except on Shabbat) from Rosh Chodesh Elul, the first day of the month, until the day before Rosh Hashanah to “wake us up” to the approaching new year.
• Reciting Psalm 27 every day from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Hoshanah Rabbah on Sukkot (in the month of Tishrei). Chava Mirel has a beautiful setting for this you can find on our website.
• Reciting selichot (special penitential prayers) close to midnight either at the start of the week according to the Ashkenazi custom, or every morning of Elul according to Sephardi tradition.
• Visiting the graves of loved ones throughout the month to remember and honor those people in our past who inspire us to live more fully in the future. We are invited to do this as a community at the Kever Avot service on September 17th. (Learn more about Kever Avot on page 21.)
Elul Extravaganza
As we use Elul for our individual preparations, we are also invited to join as a Temple De Hirsch Sinai community on Friday, August 25th at the Seattle Campus for an Elul Extravaganza, which will be part of an expanded Kabbalat Shabbat celebration. Festivities begin at 5 PM with Shabbat Jr. (for Families with Young Children), followed by a heavy nosh for all ages at 5:30 PM.
At 6 PM, we can dive into one of many possibilities for High Holy Day preparation at a workshop. Options will include Family Friendly Arts & Crafts, Movies & Midrash for Teshuvah, Culinary Arts for the Season, Musical Meditation, and more. Shabbat services will begin at 7 PM and will be followed by an event for The Tribe, Temple’s 20s and 30s group.
L’Shanah tova u’metuka –may it be a sweet & good year!

A Celebration of Rosh Hashanah Around the World for Families with Children
By Stacey Frishman Delcau, Director of Education
On the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah, our JRM and BFRS staff invite all families with children to join us at Aubrey Davis Park on Mercer Island for a morning of activities, celebrations, and song. The theme of the morning will focus on how Jewish communities around the world celebrate Rosh Hashanah in similar and different ways.
The past few years since COVID have shifted the way our congregants celebrate the High Holidays. We are finding that more families want to have an experience together in community with other families rather than our previous drop-off children’s programming. Building on the success of our end-of-year picnic for BFRS and JRM families, our entire education staff is working to craft a program that engages families together with their children while building and strengthening our greater Temple community.
Travel around the world with us as we celebrate the “birthday of the world” through song, a special Tashlich ceremony, a story walk, crafts, and an interactive Torah story. Activities will be targeted to ages 2-10, but we welcome all children who are a part of our Temple community.
Sunday, September 17th, 10:00-11:30 AM
Aubrey Davis Park | Mercer Island
Registration will be available in mid-August - check eTidings or the JRM and BFRS newsletters for a link.

High Holy Day Social Action
By Rabbi Avi B. Fine
Our central work during the High Holy Days is the process of teshuvah, of repentance. It is incumbent on us to reflect on our actions in the past year, assess where we missed the mark and where we succeeded, and redirect ourselves in the coming year. This, too, is the case when it comes to our pursuit of Tikkun Olam.
The pursuit of justice extends from interpersonal interactions to where we spend and donate our money to our support of structures that affect everyone. I invite you to reflect on where you succeeded and where you could improve in your acts of justice. How do you want to be different in the new year? What can you commit to?
Here are some specific questions to ask yourself or discuss as a family, as well as some timely volunteer opportunities:
• Where did I/we donate money this year? What percentage of my income did I donate?
• How did I/we improve life for others this year?
• Do the places I spend money or the institutions that hold my money reflect my values?
• What structures and systems benefit me, and which ones disadvantage me?
• What are some of the greatest challenges facing our community/country/the world? What is my role in being a part of the solution?
• What justice issue do I want to learn more about?
• If you have children, what do you want to teach them about Tikkun Olam this year?
• What Tikkun Olam am I committing myself to do in the year 5784?
Jewish Family Service (JFS) Food Drive and Sort
As in previous years, we are participating in the JFS Food Drive. You will be able to pick up a bag at Rosh Hashanah services, fill it with non-perishable food items, and drop it off at either campus on Yom Kippur. Sunday, October 15th will be a communal food sorting event at JFS.
Yom Kippur Hunger Reflection
The organization MAZON: a Jewish Response to Hunger invites us to use our fast on Yom Kippur to reflect on hunger in America and all those who do not have enough nutritious food to eat. Whether or not you refrain from food, one possibility is to donate the money you would normally spend on food to MAZON or a local food bank.
You can support our social justice work via a donation to the Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund during this year’s Annual Campaign. Learn more about the campaign on page 22.

Kever Avot Service: A tradition for you to remember loved ones
By Laurie Warshal Cohen
One of the services Temple offers for the upcoming holiday season is Kever Avot.
Sacred Journeys has supported members of our community who want to participate in this tradition with our Kever Avot service.
Sunday, September 17th , 2-4 PM
In-person and streaming
Butterworth / Arthur A. Wright Chapel
520 W. Raye St., Seattle, WA 98119
What is Kever Avot?
Kever Avot refers to the Jewish custom of visiting the gravesides of parents or close relatives to honor their memory. Jewish communities and our Temple have long practiced this tradition of honoring our loved ones between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
As we all look forward to the Jewish holidays, we often think of loved ones we have lost. They celebrated with us and brought meaning to our lives. This service allows us a space and time to remember them.
Who will attend this service?
No matter when your loved ones died, or where they are buried, we hope you will attend this service and light a candle in memory of your loved ones. If you attend virtually, have a candle nearby to light during the service.
What kind of service is it?
This is a casual, yet very meaningful service, led by Rabbi Weiner. It is a time to reflect on love, loss and moving forward into a new Jewish year.
Sacred Journeys welcomes you.
Sacred Journeys provides light refreshments before the service to welcome you as a part of our Temple family. After the service, if you have loved ones buried in the cemetery, you can visit their gravesites and leave a stone, provided at the cemetery by Sacred Journeys.
More info: Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw.org
Sacred Journeys always welcomes volunteers. Contact Jennifer Phillips if you are interested in learning how you can be a part of this group.

Temple’s 5784 Annual Campaign –Because We’re Family
By Emma Silverstein, Development Manager
Throughout the year, Temple’s members and friends support worship, education, and programs with generous donations. Whether through your annual membership contribution, a listing in the Memorial Book, a tribute in honor of an occasion, or a gift to the Annual Campaign, your generosity enables Temple to engage in the holy work of our community. Thank you.
In keeping with the tradition of giving tzedakah during the High Holy Days, we ask that you please consider making a gift to Temple’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Annual Campaign – Because We’re Family, which launches on Rosh Hashanah and runs through December 31, 2023. We provide a variety of options for contributing, making it easier than ever to support Temple.
You may choose to contribute to a fund that aligns most with your personal values: the High Holy Days Fund (for greatest needs, including security), the Endless Opportunities Fund, the Siegal Tikkun Olam Fund, or the Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool Fund. Watch your email or mailbox for more information about each fund’s individual impact.
Do you work for a company that has a matching program? If so, they may match your gift, leveraging the impact of your generosity. Ask your HR team for more information.
As you consider your support, in addition to giving online or by mail, we offer members many ways to support Temple that may have tax advantages*, including:
Donor Advised Funds (DAF)
DAFs are the fastest-growing giving method and a tax-efficient way to manage charitable donations.
Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. If you are a DAF holder at Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or BNY Mellon, you can easily make a designation through the DAFDirect window on the Ways to Give page of Temple’s website.
Appreciated Securities
Contribute a gift of stock. Brokerage information is on our website, or you may call me directly for details.
Qualified Charitable Distribution from an Individual Retirement Account
If you are 70 ½ years of age or older, you may make gifts by rolling over up to $100,000 from an IRA and pay no income tax on the amount that has been transferred. Please consult your tax advisor to learn more about this tax-advantaged giving option.
Questions? I’d love to answer them!
With gratitude,
Emma Silverstein Development Manager esilverstein@tdhs-nw.org

Capital Campaign Update –What a Difference a Summer Makes!
By Barb Maduell, Senior Development Director
Since our congregation voted in May to move forward with our 16th Avenue capital campaign, our clergy, staff, and lay leadership have been busy with the next phase of our Seattle campus transformation. Stay tuned for the launch of our special campaign page on the Temple website – where you’ll find regular updates – before the High Holy Days. Until then, here are some headlines!
Planning for the first major remodel of our Seattle campus in 62 years is well underway. Led by Board member Steve Schwartz, our project facilities committee is working with our architectural firm, Mithun, to create revitalized outdoor and indoor spaces that will be welcoming, warm, flexible, beautiful, and of course, safe and secure. The permitting process with the City of Seattle is an important next step and will determine the final project schedule. We hope to begin construction in the Spring of 2024 and open our new doors about a year later.
The campaign’s lay leadership and group of other volunteers is growing! If you’d like to be involved – on a committee or just for an hour – we promise to find a
way for you to plug in that speaks to your interests and strengths.
Of course, our revitalized spaces will be made possible by… our Temple community! Led by campaign co-chairs Aaron Alhadeff and Laurie Minsk, we grow closer to our campaign goal every day by meeting personally with congregants to share plans, answer questions, learn what matters most, and invite stretch gifts or pledges (over up to five years) that are personally meaningful. The generosity is truly inspiring. Because we’re blessed to have a large Temple family, it will take time to connect with everyone over the coming several months. If you’re ready to make a gift, learn how you can volunteer, or ask any questions, we’d love to speak with you! Please contact Barb Maduell, Senior Director of Development, at bmaduell@tdhs-nw.org or (425) 891-9392.

Donors to the capital campaign will be listed beginning in the November edition of Tidings, and in subsequent editions throughout the campaign. Donors may choose to be anonymous at the time they contribute.

As we prepare for the upcoming High Holy Days, we are also planning for the 5784 Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is a dignified way of paying tribute to our dear ones who have passed away. This book is unrelated to the yahrzeit plaques, which are used for Kaddish during the year. In the Memorial Book, Temple members record for posterity the names of family and friends they wish to remember. This year’s Memorial Book will be online and available in print by request. As always, it will be available in print during in-person High Holy Days services.
