Greetings From Our Executive Director
By Lisa D. Horowitz
Dear Friends,
As I write this letter, Spring is about to burst forth, and with it some of my favorite times at Temple. We just celebrated Purim with a day of festivities on our Seattle Campus, full of raucous fun for all ages. Our Passover Seder has been combined with the “Freedom Seder” we host with our friends at FAME, for a Community Seder that will be meaningful in many ways. And our Clergy Institute will bring a noted thinker on antisemitism. Our Annual Meeting, Board Installation, Confirmation and Graduation, and – cutest of all – Jennifer Rosen Meade Preschool’s Graduation – all beckon us later in the Spring. It is a great time to be a Temple member!
As fun and fulfilling as these events all are, they are but the tip of the iceberg of what it means to be a Temple member.
Over the past months and years, I have had the honor of speaking with many Temple members and prospective members about why Temple is important to them. Everyone has their own Temple story, and some common themes emerge.
Here are just a few:
“Temple is my family.” We sometimes describe Temple as a “family of families,” and for many, it’s an apt description. Temple is here for our members in good times and in bad, when we need comfort and when we want to celebrate. Deep relationships develop, with our clergy and with other members. It’s so heartwarming to see a preschool parent, for example, who themselves attended JRM, and to see college students return to Temple for coffee with their rabbi during school breaks.
“I am proud of Temple’s history.” For nearly 125 years, Temple has been a presence in the Central District – where we have remained, long after many other religious institutions moved on. Temple’s commitment to social justice was a founding principle.
LISA D. HOROWITZ EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

When a local church withdrew its invitation to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to speak, Temple stepped up and hosted him. Temple was also the location of Jimi Hendrix’s first performance (really!) and Temple’s own Samuel Goldfarb was the author of “I Have a Little Dreidel.” How many other synagogues can boast of such a legacy?
“I am proud of the good work our rabbis and congregants do in the world.” Whether it’s advocating for immigrant rights or for peace in Israel, our clergy and congregants are at the forefront of making the world a better place. We offer monthly volunteer opportunities for congregants to make a difference (which you can read more about in Rabbi Fine’s Tikkun Olam update), and we’ve established interfaith partnerships with congregations like FAME to address issues facing our broader community.
I could list many more “why’s” to support and belong to Temple. What’s your “why”? I’d love to hear from you.
Wishing you a joyous Passover and a Springtime of renewal,

Letter from our Board President
By Aaron Alhadeff

AARON ALHADEFF TDHS BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
On March 23, our Board of Trustees took the momentous step of recommending a “scope and budget” for a congregational vote at the Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 24. This will be the first major capital project on our Seattle campus in 62 years!
The board is entrusted by you, our members, to steward Temple’s sacred mission. For that reason, we voted only after years of due diligence, and only after we were sure that this project – what we are calling the 16th Avenue Complex – would have the
most impact now and into the future. Because we want you to be fully informed before you cast your vote, we have planned Town Halls (in person and on Zoom) for later this month. I encourage you to attend to share your thoughts and questions. You can also reach out to me at aalhadeff@elttaes.com.
I look back with tremendous gratitude to the many generations who made it possible for each of us to find our home at Temple today: from our founders in 1899, to those who brought Temple De Hirsch and Temple Sinai together in 1970, to those who built our beautiful Bellevue campus, and so many more.
Whether your family has been Temple members for six generations, or you joined in the past year, I say, “Let’s do this, together!”
Warm wishes,

Wednesday, May 24, 2023

Rabbi’s Corner: A Year’s Time
By Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner

DANIEL A. WEINER SENIOR RABBI
I’ve always found meaning in a paraphrase from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus: “No one ever steps in the same river twice. For it’s not the same river and they are not the same person.” Beyond its hoary wisdom on the inevitability of change, this axiom offers intimate and personal insight on the nature of memory and grief. For as the intensity and shock of initial loss gives way to a broader, subtler, but no less potent perspective, grief grows into gratitude, and the void of absence fills with an abundance of grace.
As I approached Jewish tradition’s yahrzeit (literally a “year’s time”), the first anniversary of my father’s passing, my thoughts turned to the sum of his life as much as the essence of my own. The structure of the Jewish mourning periods—the first week, first thirty days, and first year—is a remarkable testament to the intuitive appreciation of the ancient sages for the power of catharsis. The need to set aside time to process grief, grasped millennia before the insights of modern psychology, has empowered both a healthy embrace of loss and Judaism’s strong encouragement to move into the future integrating the death of loved ones into our being and becoming.
The spiritual space carved out by that lengthy mourning process is even more critical now than it was thousands of years ago. The myriad tasks required to reconcile modern estates vastly complicates the aftermath of loss beyond the more immediate needs of funeral and burial. My father’s lengthy illness, abated by treatment nearly two decades earlier, came rushing back, as he metaphorically fell off the cliff of wellness as literally as he fainted to the floor one evening. He was my mother’s sole caretaker for her struggle with cognitive impairment, and so those final weeks were a blur of balancing his final days with the totality of her need.
When death finally came, our family launched into a litany of duties: arranging for the burial, scheduling the funeral, and finding a place for our mother to get the care she needed and deserved. Just as the shock of that surreal week began to wane, we were thrust into the churn of financial and legal processes, so vital to insure my mother’s uninterrupted wellbeing. It was only after weeks or months of addressing worldly tasks that thoughts of my own spiritual care came into focus.
Therein lies a great and painful irony. As a rabbi, I counsel others to take time to grieve and not to pour themselves into workaday matters as a distraction from embracing life’s inevitable pain. And yet, as one who was now directly experiencing the loss of a parent who was himself a rabbi, practical pressures trumped emotional needs in ways that only became apparent through personal experience.
And so, with the distance and latitude of a year’s time, as the mundane and monetary settles

into patterned regularity, I can more fully embrace the power of this milestone. With the blessed filtering of selective memory, the sharp edges of those last weeks of my father’s life recede. Loving images and lasting lessons come more clearly into focus: The soft and warm embrace of his voice; his selfless commitment to mentor younger colleagues; and the ways in which he made every encounter feel as if you were at its core. But with the honing of his life into a kind of greatest hits of recollection comes a recognition of the ways in which I am now forever changed.
Certainly, there is that well known existential gut check, when you realize that you have now ascended to become the senior generation, with all its intimations of mortality and ultimate responsibility. But there is also a sense of a deeper, more elemental transformation, as my father’s life melds into mine in the mystical mélange of what one generation bequeaths to the next. The echo of his soul—like the ever-present whistling that
accompanied his walking--resounds in me through the halls of the ages, as I take up the mantle of all who came before, doing my best to pass along a patrimony that is more shared than possessed.
As I step once again into the river of life at this first yearly commemoration of my father’s death, the world and I are different. The waters that flow through it are never the same, and yet the form and current remain. Forever coursing forward, shaped by banks forged long ago, inexorably carrying us from place to place, moment to moment, towards eternity.
Rabbi Daniel A. Weiner with his father, Rabbi Martin S. Weiner (z”l).
Celebrating Leadership in Our Community and Beyond

Kol Ha Kavod to Our Courageous Temple Teens

Mazel Tov on a Purim Festival to Remember
Many thanks to Sarah Quint Goldhammer for her leadership and support of Temple’s 5783 Purim Spiel & Festival. Along with Paula Cooper and Rabbi Brett Weisman, Sarah headed our Purim planning committee, where she worked diligently behind the scenes to craft our Purim experience. Thank you, Sarah, for helping us create such a fun and festive community event!

Meet Temple’s Facilities Team
Every Spring, Temple members gather to rejoice during the holidays, mark important milestones, and hear from celebrated guest speakers. All these programs (and more) are made possible by our dedicated Facilities Team, who work across both of our locations to deliver meaningful and memorable experiences for our community. We asked three members of the team to tell us a bit about themselves and their roles at Temple – if you see them on campus, feel free to say hi!

CORNELL FERRELL | Program & Events Manager
I help plan and coordinate services and events at both Temple locations. Whether it’s a weekly Shabbat service, a B’nai Mitzvah reception, or the High Holy Days, I oversee the execution of all types of celebrations.
I like traveling, hanging out with friends and family, and cooking on my BBQ grill. My favorite things about working at Temple have to be the wonderful people in the congregation, as well as my knowledgeable, hard-working colleagues – I wouldn’t be able to do my job without them.

VINCENT GREENE | Facilities Lead, Bellevue
My name is Vincent, and I grew up in Tacoma, WA. I currently reside in Puyallup with my girlfriend, dog and cat. I enjoy painting, cooking, playing video games, and generally being outside in nice weather.
At Temple, I’m the friendly and familiar face that helps with setting up and breaking down events, running the soundboard for services, and working on general upkeep. I also assist congregants and staff with whatever they need. What I like most about Temple is that I’m surrounded by a diverse group of people who come from different experiences than I do, and so I’m constantly learning. I also like to be helpful and to aid in making a small difference in this community.

DEMETRIUS WASHINGTON | Facilities Lead, Seattle
I’m Temple’s everyman. If it needs fixing, building, or moving, I’ll be there. I’m always there to help, regardless of the shape or size of the problem. You can always reach out to me for anything.
I primarily grew up in Washington. I love sci-fi, nature documentaries, history, gaming, karaoke, fencing, and cooking.
Spring with Tikkun Olam: A Time of Growth
By Rabbi Avi B. Fine
Flowers are not the only things that are growing this Spring. Our Springtime is alive with possibilities to engage in Tikkun Olam.
Passover arrives in the middle of a time of birth and regrowth. As in the past few years, we will be joining with FAME (First African Methodist Episcopal Church) for a Community Passover Seder. As our relationship deepens, we are excited to share in this opportunity to celebrate together and build common bonds between our two communities. We are hard at work crafting an experience that will provide the chance to meet new people and to see our tradition in a new light.
Two other new growths bear highlighting. On Saturday, April 29th, we will return to Angle Lake Park to commemorate Earth Day and steward the growth of native plants. For over a year, we have been getting our hands dirty at Angle Lake, and each time we go, we see the fruits of our labor.
On Saturday, May 6th, in the afternoon, we will have another opportunity to build a tiny home through Sound Foundations NW. No matter your skill level, you will be inspired that in one day you can build a home for a person.
There is so much we can do to grow and build our world around us. The Spring is a great time to join us.

In honor of Tu Bishvat, Temple volunteers visited Angle Lake Park on February 5 to continue our forest stewardship.
Celebrating Purim at JRM
By Leah Levy, Director of JRM Preschool

Purim is all about spreading joy! For the first time in three years, we welcomed over 50 parents, grandparents, and friends to line the hallways for the JRM Purim Parade. Led by our Leopards (Pre-K) Class and Rabbi Weiner, classes paraded through the halls and offices, singing and dancing their way into the Sanctuary for a special Purim Tot Shabbat.
The days leading up to Purim were filled with music, laughter, and learning. Favorite moments included hamentashen baking, mask painting, grogger making, scavenger hunts, Purim puppet
story time, hamentashen filling taste tests, tiedying superhero capes, and a special Shushan Street visit from Grover (Rabbi Fine) and Cookie Monster (Rabbi Weisman). Purim week had spirit day themes, mishloach manot for classmates and teachers, and the Chai Five Club pizza party – a celebration for JRM reaching 100% family participation in the Annual Campaign.

Temple’s Partnership with Tri-Cities Flourishes!
By Jennifer Lee, Tri-Cities Coordinator/Teacher
One bright spot of the pandemic was that TDHS expanded its support of Jewish education and community across the state to the Tri-Cities. Tri-Cities Temple members are in our third year of being part of TDHS; the first year we had our seven students enrolled in online Hebrew and Sunday School, and in the fall of 2021, we transitioned to having in-person Sunday School in the Tri-Cities while continuing mid-week Hebrew online. In this time, we have celebrated two b’nai mitzvah in Bellevue in 2022, with two more coming in 2023. We had seven virtual Rabbi visits, two Israeli pen pal sessions, one in-person Purim celebration in Seattle, and countless Eastern Washington weather updates during Hebrew class.
Our group is comprised of two 4th graders, one 5th grader, three 7th graders, and one 8th grader, and we meet at the campus of a local Montessori school through a wonderful collaboration. Jenn leads the core curriculum instruction, while Naomi leads our cultural connection activities, and both of us bring our previous Jewish education experience to our TriCities satellite campus. We also regularly add to our Sunday School experience through monthly potluck Shabbats where we stream Friday or Saturday services, as well as tuning into various speakers that Temple hosts online.
We love being part of the Temple community and hope that we will see many of you in person once the Pass decides to stop snowing so much. Also, if you know of any families in the area, we would love to connect with them, too!

Teen Trips: Building Jewish Identity and Connection
By Stacey Frishman Delcau & Jessie Stott
Temple offers all students from 8th-12th grade the opportunity to build community and experience the wider world from a Jewish perspective. Traveling with our Temple community builds bonds between our students and staff unlike any other experience, and this is a highlight of our high school offerings.

8th Grade
This year, 25 of our 8th graders traveled to Los Angeles over MLK weekend. They experienced Shabbat services at Sinai Temple, a food scavenger hunt of the Jewish neighborhood of Pico-Robertson, Shabbat morning services on the beach, a day at Disneyland, and MLK services at the First AME Church of Los Angeles. It was a weekend filled with creating new bonds and solidifying friendships between our students.
9th/10th Grades
Our 9th/10th graders traveled to Washington, D.C. in February to participate in the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s L’taken Social Justice Seminar for high schoolers. Over 350 participants from around the country were part of this four-day trip. Our participants visited the US Holocaust Museum, the Museum of African American History, the Museum of Natural History, and many of the National Mall Monuments. Throughout the weekend, students learned about major issues in our country and how Reform Jewish values should empower us to act to create change. The final day of the conference, our students visited Capitol Hill to lobby our Washington State senators and congresspeople to support bills that help to make our country a better place. Our students lobbied on the subjects of women’s reproductive rights and antisemitism.
Participant Speech delivered at Senator Maria Cantwell’s office:
“Antisemitism has become a prominent problem in the Jewish community, as it is on the rise due to the harmful ideologies of the growing white nationalist movement... These attacks have shown that places of worship like synagogues are no longer safe from antisemitic extremists, and in order to protect people from more tragedy, we believe you should co-sponsor the Pray Safe Act.”
“Hillel, a Jewish scholar, states that our Jewish values can be summarized by the line: ‘What is hateful to you, do not do to another.’ Many of us here today have experienced instances of antisemitism. These encounters have often left us with feelings of insecurity, anger and fear... As Jews, our values dictate that we have an obligation to stand up against antisemitism.”
“The Pray Safe Act, Senate Bill 2123 in the 117th Congress, would direct the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and other federal agencies to establish a federal clearinghouse through which faithbased organizations and houses of worship can access information on the best safety and security practices, federal grant programs, and training opportunities. This bill will help ensure that religious communities have the training and financial resources to improve security and keep worshippers safe. We thank the Senator for voting for the Pray Safe Act, Senate Bill 2123 in the 117th Congress and urge them to cosponsor the bill when it is reintroduced in the 118th Congress.”
Excerpted from a speech written by Sydney L., Shira D., and Maddie J., delivered in both Senate and House offices.

11th/12th Grades:
Ten adventurous 11th and 12th graders joined Rabbi Brett Weisman and Jessie Stott on a nine-day trip to Spain. This group toured Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Madrid, and Toledo, learning about Jewish history in Spain and the expulsion of Jews in the 15th century. They tried new foods, walked dozens of miles, explored centuries-old cities, and learned some Spanish along the way. This trip was an opportunity not only for our students to get to know a new country and its people, culture, and history, but to get to know each other and learn new things about themselves. This group came back from the trip with stronger bonds, a deeper understanding of the importance of Jewish history, and a reinforced confidence in their Jewish identity.

B’NAI MITZVAH
Staying Connected with Our Temple Family
By Laurie Warshal Cohen
A member of our congregation recently told Sacred Journeys volunteer Ann Singer: “Receiving a candle to light on my father’s first yahrzeit was so personal and meaningful to me. Thank you to Sacred Journeys for keeping me in mind for a whole year, and thank you for your call.”
For Ann and other Sacred Journeys volunteers, this is why we reach out to Temple members. We want our Temple family to feel supported at times of loss.
Sometimes, at the time of death, family members are just trying to “get through” this difficult time. When the year’s anniversary comes by, they often feel lost and disconnected from the Jewish traditions around a yahrzeit.
We light a yahrzeit candle the night before the date of death. The names of our relatives are listed in the Temple Tidings, and we read them each year on Shabbat on the anniversary of their death (during Friday night and Saturday morning services). If you would like to have a loved one’s name read, you may enroll in Temple’s Perpetual Yahrzeit program, or call Temple by the Wednesday before Shabbat.
Thanks to Charlene Polyansky and our team of Sacred Journeys volunteers, Temple members receive handwritten notes, phone calls, and a yahrzeit candle to light on the first anniversary of the death of a loved one.
This past year (February 2022-February 2023), Sacred Journeys sent out 68 candles and made calls to let the family know a candle was coming. Some of our members were able to attend services and hear their loved one’s name read, while many others streamed the service from home.
It’s been so hard to get together these past few years, but Sacred Journeys has brought comfort to Temple members dealing with grief. If you are interested in learning more about the support we offer our congregants, we would love to have you join us.
Contact Jennifer Phillips at jphillips@tdhs-nw. org for more information about volunteering, and to learn more about Temple’s Perpetual Yahrzeit program.

THE CLERGY INSTITUTE: FOR INTERFAITH LEARNING
Keynote: Antisemitism Today: Building Understanding and Allyship with AntiDefamation League CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt.
The Annual Clergy Institute: For Interfaith Learning is made possible through the generous support of The Alfred and Tillie Shemanski Trust, the Family of Mila and Henry Eisenhardt, and Seattle University. It is an opportunity each Spring for interfaith study and discourse on our Seattle Campus. Jonathan Greenblatt, our 2023 Scholar, is brought to us by ADL Pacific Northwest.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT LUNCH & LEARN
As we celebrate Israel’s 75th anniversary and affirm the realization of this miraculous project of the Jewish people, we are also troubled by the recent turn in Israel’s political landscape that threatens the liberal democratic values that are integral to our success and acceptance in the modern world. Join Rabbi Weiner for a learning session to explore these concepts on Wednesday, April 26th at 12 PM, at Temple’s Bellevue Campus or on Zoom. Registration available on our website.

ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES
Endless Opportunities is a community-wide partnership between Temple De Hirsch Sinai, Congregation Beth Shalom, Congregation Kol Ami, Jewish Family Service, Kline Galland, Temple Beth Am and Temple B’nai Torah, staffed by Rabbi Kate Speizer. EO gathers 3-4 times each month. Events are designed by older adults and are both educational and social. Programming is open to all, often in a hybrid setting, and we look forward to more outings in the months to come!
COMING SOON
Stay tuned for more opportunities in the Summer and Fall, including High Holy Day preparation, our annual Bernbaum Family Lecture, and more!
Questions, ideas, requests?
Please reach out to Temple’s Adult Engagement Director, Rabbi Kate Speizer, (206) 693-3046 or kspeizer@tdhs-nw.org.

What an Impact You Make!
By Barb Maduell, Senior Development Director
You’ve heard that Temple relies on the generosity of our members and friends to sustain our community and continue our legacy of welcoming all who want to worship, learn, and grow with us. But what does that really mean? From “A to Z,” the support of donors touches every aspect of Temple life. Here are some examples of the impact your contributions are making this year. Thank you!
Awe-inspiring B’nai Mitzvah leading the congregation
Blood Drive donations saving lives
Celebrating Shabbat with our clergy and musicians
Dancing together on Simchat Torah
Expressing our stewardship of the earth at Angle Lake Park
FAME Choir inspiring us at MLK Jr. Shabbat
Graggers booing Haman on Shushan Street
High Holy Days sermons inspiring us for the coming year
Introduction to Judaism students sharing their personal journeys
JRM families making lifelong friends at Parents Nights Out
Kids in the Tri-Cities learning online with their Temple teacher
Latkes, latkes, and more latkes at the Chanukah party

Music and merriment at The Tribe Refresh event
New members of all ages and stages welcomed into the community
Outstanding BFRS teachers engaging their students
Posing big questions at TDSY Tuesdays
Quietly reflecting on the year past and year ahead on Yom Kippur
Rabbis supporting our members through times of joy and sorrow
Security guards who know us well, providing peace of mind
Trips around town and to LA, DC, and Spain for our youth to see the world through a Jewish lens
Unbounded dedication of our staff, lay leaders, and volunteers
Volunteers building a tiny home with Sound Foundations NW
Wonderful friendships fostered through Sisterhood
X-ploring Jewish text at Weekly Torah Study
Yahrzeits observed in memory of our loved ones
Zillions of smiles happening at Shabbat Junior
These examples capture just a fraction of the spiritual journeys, lifelong learning, and meaningmaking you help make possible — for you and your families, other members, and for all those who walk through our doors. Thank you!
If you have any questions or feedback about Temple’s development program, I’d love to connect.
With Gratitude, Barb Maduell
