Summer Greetings!

Lives continue to be transformed at TCU and 1,957 students received their degrees this past May. A record-breaking 20,000 students applied to attend TCU, and we will welcome almost 2,000 students when they arrive in just a few short weeks.

Last spring was a time of celebration with several key annual donor recognition events taking place, including the Endowed Chairs and Professorships Dinner, the Chancellor’s Council Dinner and the Scholarship Dinner. These events allow us to show our appreciation for our supportive donors – YOU! Additionally, because of your support, I am proud to share that this year the Clark Society Endowed Scholarship is awarding seven scholarships of $7,000 each.

Save the date! “The Voice” is coming back to Clark Weekend for Season 2. November 2-3 will be a weekend you will not want to miss!

The value of your support Q: Can you describe the work that you did while you were at the reserve?

ST: My job was a number of things film and photorelated. Mainly it was documenting procedures when the team would tranquilize animals like cheetahs, elephants and rhinos to give them veterinary care.

A lot of what I filmed was for fundraising and raising awareness for the African Rhino Conservation Collaboration. When I got there, they put me to work right away. The job gave me lots of experience doing the kind of work I want to do outdoors. And, I had this awesome backdrop - South Africa - with lions, rhinos and cheetahs.

Since developing the Internship Scholarship Program in 2014, TCU has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships to students with low or unpaid internships. One of those students was Sam Tippetts, a senior double major in film, television and digital media and strategic communication from Boerne, Texas. He is extremely grateful for the opportunity to have interned with the Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa for nearly three months last summer.

In the interview that follows, he shares how the internship helped enhance his education.

Q: What did your internship involve, and how did it relate to your major?

ST: The Amakhala Game Reserve needed someone able to produce video, who was comfortable being outside and who could also take photographs of veterinary procedures on rhinos as well as wildlife footage. When I saw the job description, I jumped at the chance because it was right up my alley. In my career, I want to do outdoor production.

Q: What surprised you about the experience?

ST: I was filming a lot of confidential stuff, which is the opposite of what you expect when you think of fundraising and awareness. For instance, I made videos to show why Amakhala Game Reserve was a great place to house rhinos for rhino owners who were concerned about the animals’ safety. That video only went to a specific group because you can’t put out too much information about where these rhinos are or show how big their horns are, or people will want to poach them.

The value of this experience is so much more than I would have had at another job. It really was incredible. I can’t say thank you enough.

Q: If you could speak with the donors, what would you tell them?

ST: This experience was life-changing. My internship scholarship paid for my plane ticket. There is no way I could have gone without that assistance. I had another potential internship lined up where I could have earned money over the summer, but the value of this experience is so much more than I would have had at another job. It really was incredible. I can’t say thank you enough.

31st Annual Scholarship Dinner

The 31st Annual Scholarship Dinner was held April 18 in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena. After a performance by the TCU Drum Line, student scholar Brandon Kitchin shared how his TCU experience has changed his life.

“For me, these scholarships mean more than just financial support. They are validation that my hard work means something to somebody. It means people have trust and interest in someone they don’t even know - that’s so empowering.

Each year, the Scholarship Dinner provides the opportunity to honor the generous individuals who have the wisdom and foresight to invest in future generations of Horned Frogs and to hear the stories of the students who benefit. Scholarships awarded for the first time during the current academic year are celebrated as part of the evening’s program.

7 scholars receive $7,000 because of you The Clark Society Endowed Scholarship allows the Clark Society to award scholarships to outstanding seniors who are nominated by TCU faculty and staff based on demonstrated leadership, campus involvement and GPA. These highly competitive merit scholarships reward students for their excellence and engagement during their time at TCU and encourage them to stay connected to TCU after graduation. First awarded in 1999, the scholarship has now supported 75 students. Because of your generosity, this year the endowed fund is awarding seven scholarships of $7,000 each.

2018-2019 Clark Society Scholars Maddie Barnett is a senior biochemistry major from Richardson, Texas. She is co-president of the Chemistry Club, a charter member of Phi Mu fraternity and a member of the John V. Roach Honors College.

Lexee Leach is a senior musical theatre major from Colleyville, Texas. She is a member of Student Foundation and Gamma Phi Beta sorority and is a Frog Camp facilitator.

John Biebighauser is a senior neuroscience major and Spanish for health professions minor from Grapevine, Texas.

He is a member of Student Foundation and the TCU Horned Tones a cappella group and is the campus involvement chair for Sigma Nu fraternity.

Michelle Nguyen is a senior youth advocacy and educational studies major and comparative race and ethnic studies minor from Windsor, Connecticut. She is in the Chancellor’s Leadership Program, is the director of education for the Collaborative Greek Council and is a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

Rachel Farrow is a senior nursing major and nutrition minor from Rockwall, Texas.

She is a resident assistant, a member of the Harris Fellows and a tutor in anatomy and physiology.

Jada Taylor is a senior strategic communication major and business minor from Washington, D.C. Jada is a member of the Women’s Equestrian Team, president of the Student-Athlete Academic Association and a Wings of Hope volunteer.

April Tran is a senior biology major and chemistry and studio art minor from Houston, Texas. She is vice president of the Vietnamese Student Association, a student researcher in the Jeffries Environmental Toxicology Lab and a weekly volunteer at Asana Hospice.

35 Years and Counting Q: Tell us about founding the Clark Society Board.

Why did you decide to become a part of this organization?

RJ: In the early 1980s, I became very involved with TCU through the Houston Alumni Board and, soon after, the TCU Alumni Board.

I became a Clark Society member and was asked to be the chair of the first Clark Society Board. Our first task was to find like-minded people to join the Clark Society Board – people who had made their mark on TCU and who cared as much as we did about the University.

Rob Johnson is not slowing down; he is a former TCU Trustee, National Alumni Board member, Houston Chapter President and National Vice President of Athletics. He was a founding member and Chairman of the Clark Society Board and now serves on the Brite Divinity School Board of Trustees. Rob comes from a TCU family. When he was growing up, part of his family’s business was the food concession operation at Amon G. Carter Stadium, where he worked every game day. He grew up in the shadows of the Stadium, having attended Alice Carlson Elementary and Paschal High School at a time when TCU only had a couple hundred more students than his high school.

His passion for philanthropy, specifically to TCU, started in 1978 with his first gift. Since 1983, he has made gifts to TCU annually. We caught up with him to celebrate his 35th consecutive year of giving.

Q: What inspires you to give to TCU? RJ: TCU is a special place. The leadership over the years has been excellent, and the education that is on display through the students seems exceptional. It’s a wonderful environment that is located in a dynamic city -- Fort Worth -- where the two have formed a great partnership.

Q: Looking back at that time, how did you imagine TCU in the future?

RJ: Around the same time I got involved at TCU, Chancellor Bill Tucker came in, and he was exactly what the doctor ordered. Everything started to change for the good, and he made me want to be involved. We knew we needed to grow, and we needed to be able to compete with other schools, and part of that was starting the engineering school.

Since then, TCU has been in an upward spiral. TCU is on the lips of everyone who I talk to down here in Houston, and it used to not be that way.

Q: What motivates you to give year after year?

RJ: It’s truly amazing how far TCU has come: from a small sleepy college campus in the 60s in a nice quiet town with some past football successes, to a national brand with 10 times as many applicants as there are student slots. The campus has changed dramatically with new buildings for student housing, education, administration and athletics. It’s been quite a journey that was only accomplished by the leadership, the students and the generosity of alumni and philanthropic groups that realized what a special place TCU is and that being a part of that success is important to all involved. I’m now on the Board of Trustees at Brite, and I continue to give because I feel I’ve been blessed to be a part of TCU’s growth and success.

His love for TCU runs deep Landon Hendrickson is a new Junior Clark alumnus with big plans! The recipient of a Fulbright Award, he is delaying entry into medical school for a year to head to Poland, where he will teach English. At TCU, Landon majored in biology while also serving in many leadership positions, including Student Foundation and Frog Camp. This past year, he put his leadership skills to work in response to Hurricane Harvey, working with other TCU students to coordinate a transformative project for high school students in a low-income area of Houston impacted by the storm.

For his outstanding contributions, he received TCU’s Distinguished Student Award. He truly made a difference in the TCU Community and beyond.

Q: Why do you choose to support TCU? LH: I was always taught that if I'd look at where I spend my money, time and energy, I could quickly figure out what I love. After four years at TCU, there’s no question that my love for the University runs deep.

Many of the incredible experiences I had on campus were a result of students a few years ahead of me making a conscious decision to start an organization, spark a new idea or even donate money to TCU. So when I think of supporting TCU, I get excited! It’s my chance to be “that student” a few years ahead of someone else. More than anything, I love knowing that TCU students, employees and alumni share an enthusiasm and passion unique to our school. It’s sure to stick around for years to come!

Q: Looking back at when you first started your TCU journey, where did you think it was going to lead?

LH: I was so nervous, excited and intimidated by college that I had no clue what to expect. In high school, I had a teacher who tried to scare my peers and me by telling us we were “big fish in a small pond” in our high school, but once we went to college, we’d be “small fish in a big pond.” It’s one of those comments that's seared into my memory. As a result, I vowed to be a student who was so passionate about TCU, I’d make a difference in one way or another. I couldn’t have ever dreamed I’d be standing here four years later with so many awesome experiences.

Q: What are you most excited about that is happening at TCU? LH: I’m most excited about all the construction in Worth Hills! Watching it transform from a somewhat run-down area to a place that’s got a lot going on (new intramural fields, incredible new residence halls, the Greek Village and the King Family Commons) has been a ton of fun. I’ve only been an alumnus for a few months, and I’m already jealous of the students who get to take advantage of it all!

Q: Where was the spot to hang out when you were a senior (last year)?

LH: I was all about finding good deals on food. I had a group of friends I’d meet for half-price pizookies at BJ’s every Tuesday, and it was certainly a highlight of my week! I had another friend group that would meet at The Pub on University Drive each week for $5 brews. Our picture is hanging on the wall there now, and we’re pretty proud of it (even though there are thousands of others)!

Endowed Chairs and Professorships

The Endowed Chairs and Professorships Dinner is held each year to celebrate one of the most revered traditions of higher education: endowed faculty positions and the generous and visionary donors who created them. Endowed faculty positions are among the most prestigious and enduring investments a donor can make, helping us prepare our Horned Frogs to take the lead on becoming a force for the greater good.

This year’s dinner was held February 20 and featured a panel discussion on Vision in Action: Lead On. The following newly-established positions as well as the donors to those positions were honored: the Andrews Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in the John V. Roach Honors College, founded by Dr. and Mrs. Paul E. Andrews,Jr.; the Andrews Chair of Mathematics & Science Education, founded by Dr. and Mrs. Paul E. Andrews Jr. and the inaugural holder, Dr. Molly H. Weinburgh; the Don L. Smith, MD, Endowed Chair of Pre-Health Professions founded by Dr. Philip C. Bechtel; and, the Paula R. and Rondald C. Parker Endowed Professorship in Nursing founded by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald C. Parker. The evening also introduced Dr. Mary J. Waller as the new M.J. Neeley Professor in Management, established by Dr. M.J. Neeley; Dr. Darren J. N. Middleton as the new John F. Weatherly Professor in Religion, established by the Weatherly Family; and, Dr. Michelle M. Bauml as the A.J. and Edna Pickett Endowment for the Clotilda Winter Professor of Education Chair, established by the estate of Clotilda Winter.

Prior to the dinner, the students of the Andrews Institute of Mathematics & Science Education provided interactive science and math stations where guests had the opportunity to learn and enjoy.

Chancellor’s Council Dinner The investment of alumni and friends like those in the Chancellor’s Council propels the University, provides enduring support for critical goals and helps TCU sustain a unique advantage as we vie with peer institutions for outstanding students, faculty and programs. Chancellor’s Council is the Clark Society annual giving level that is achieved by members who give $10,000 or more in a single fiscal year to TCU. This year we celebrated donors who reached a new Clark Society Lifetime Giving Recognition Level and honored four donors who reached the philanthropic milestone of $25 million with TCU’s first Visionary Lifetime Giving Awards - the Amon G. Carter Foundation, T.J. Brown & C.A. Lupton Foundation, Jane & John Justin Foundation and Mr. and Mrs. Trevor D. Rees-Jones.

Nearly 300 guests attended the annual Chancellor’s Council Dinner March 21, co-chaired by Terry and Debbie Debo. The event featured the TCU College of Fine Arts School of Music. Ms. Bridget Cappel and Ms. Bronwyn White performed an excerpt from “The Falling and the Rising” a joint production of TCU and The Soldiers Chorus of the US Army Field Band and received a standing ovation.

Honoring family and friends Vision In Action : Lead On TCU is a powerful academic community that prepares global leaders with excellence, perspective and integrity to become a force for the greater good.

Vision in Action: Lead On is the third phase of TCU’s transformative strategic planning process that boldly guides the University into the future.

Last fall, the development phase of VIA: Lead On began. TCU hosted open forums to gain a better understanding of the campus environment, along with the perceptions and needs of our campus community.

More than 230 faculty, staff and students set to work on recommendations for achieving each of the four goals set forth by the Board of Trustees: strengthen the academic profile and reputation, strengthen the endowment, strengthen the TCU experience and campus culture, and strengthen the workforce.

The recommendation papers from each of the four Vision in Action: Lead On working committees are now complete, and the steering committee that will guide the University into the next phase of its strategic planning process is now in place.

The appointment of this steering committee marks a crucial milestone in our planning process, as these are the individuals who will assess recommendations outlined in the committee papers and prioritize them based on practical implementation and budgetary requirements, with a goal of Board approval next April.

Young Alumni TX Whiskey Night Fort Worth Young Alumni and Junior Clark Society members got a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Firestone & Robertson Distillery at Whiskey Ranch.

It was a great night to sip whiskey, mingle with TCU alumni and friends, and tour the “Still House,” where you could see the production and process of making whiskey. Junior Clark Society members received a commemorative whiskey ice cube tray as a thank you for their loyal support to TCU. Gratitude for decades of women It is extraordinary when students have the foresight to think about not only their current peers, but also those who will come after them.

This vision characterizes the women of the TCU Panhellenic Council, the coordinating body of the 13 National Panhellenic Conference sororities on campus. Sororities strive to make TCU’s campus stronger through leadership, sisterhood, scholarship and service. Panhellenic is the largest organization of students on TCU’s campus, with women in sororities making up just over 33 percent of the undergraduate female population.

“Every sorority that makes up our organization understands the importance of scholarships,” said TCU Panhellenic President Ellen Andrews. “Many of us could not be here without them. When you see a woman wearing sorority letters, they mean something -- she is college educated. At TCU, it is the Panhellenic Council’s mission to help her become the best version of herself she can be.”

Savings from decades of women’s Panhellenic dues have come together to turn a dream into reality: reducing the financial barrier of attending TCU for sorority women. The 2017 executive council put the scholarship into motion, and the 2018 executive council will have the honor of awarding the first scholarship recipients. Any Greek woman who is in good standing with her chapter is eligible for this scholarship, which will be awarded based on financial need.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the decades of women whose dues made this dream a reality. They were great stewards of the Panhellenic budget, and their generosity will live in perpetuity through this endowed scholarship. Prior to this year, we were not giving out any scholarships, and when the women were presented with this idea, there was zero hesitation to make this happen.
